A Dundalk family have qualified to take part in the fourth season of hit RTE series ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’.

The Broadhurst family who live in Muirhevnamor travelled to Athlone last weekend where they competed against 55 families to try and qualify for ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’.

Dad Tony along with his two sons Paul and Stephen and daughter Amy easily came through the gruelling exercises to claim a place in the programme which will air in the Autumn.

The Broadhursts are well known both locally and nationally due to their boxing prowess with all three children coached by dad Tony.

According to Tony the whole family are delighted

15-year-old questioned over assault

By Paul Byrne Gardaí in Dundalk are investigating a serious assault that occurred on Crowe St last weekend on the 11th June.

An altercation occurred shortly before 2am between a number of males, one male was seriously injured and taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and later transferred to Beaumont Hospital where his condition is described as stable. The scene was preserved for a forensic examination which has since finished. A fifteen year old boy was arrested on suspicion of assault and taken to Dundalk Garda station where Continued on Page 2

Training for the programme begins at the end of June when the RTE cameras will come to Dundalk to interview the Broadhursts film them for the programme.

The Dundalk family will have to beat eleven other families from all over the country if they are to come out on top.

According to Tony he is looking forward to pushing himself to see how far he can go.

“I’ve been a boxing coach for many years now and my sole focus has been on improving other people and trying to make them the best they can be.

This programme will be a good chance to make me focus on myself for a chance and

give me something to aim for and push myself in a competitive environment.

Myself and my wife Sheila have always encouraged our children to embrace a healthy fit lifestyle and they’ve all been involved in various sports from a very young age.

The four of us are raring to go now and we will make sure we’ll give it everything we can and hopefully that will be good enough to come out on top,” stated Tony.

Music Books event Louth Contemporary Music Society presents Music Books in Dundalk on Friday June 17 and Saturday June 18.

Tain Players launch ‘Final Bow’ Award On Tuesday night last, the Táin Players, Dundalk, launched the Mary Cosgrove perpetual drama award, in memory of their great friend and drama colleague, Mary, who graced the stages of Dundalk Town Hall and numerous other venues over the years.

Present at the ceremony were representatives from almost all local amateur drama and musical groups, as well as local media.

The specially commissioned award is a piece of polished bronze

by Sandra Bell. The award will be present-

ed annually to a local group, or individual, who in the opinion of the three judge panel of Alvaro Lucchesi, Ann O’Hare and Paul Hayes, have made a unique contribution on the stage during 2017. (More details to follow).

Netwell to lead pioneering trials Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has this week announced that its multi-disciplinary research centre, NetwellCASALA will lead trials for a pioneering digital health technology project that will enable older people with multiple chronic diseases to self-manage their conditions and to be cared for in their own homes.

Currently, 50 million patients in Europe suffer from two or more chronic conditions (or multimorbidity) and in Ireland, there are approximately 16,000 people aged 65 and over with

more than one chronic illness.

The four main types of chronic diseases are cardiovascular disease (e.g. congestive heart failure), cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes.

The new ProACT system will allow older people who have two or more of these chronic illnesses and their network of informal and formal carers including GPs, pharmacists and hospital based doctors to input and access relevant information about the older person’s conditions in one central location. It is a unified

proactive approach to managing several chronic conditions in older people, which is centred on the older person staying at home instead of constantly having to attend medical appointments.

The trial aims to test the designed technological system with 60 patients in Louth.

Dr. Julie Doyle principle investigator for ProACT at NetwellCASALA said “ProACT is an incredibly exciting project to be part of as it has the potential to really revolutionise healthcare for older people with multiple chronic conditions”.

Music Books Festival 2016 Realt Na Mara National School’s Third Classes are participating this month in an exciting new music project entitled Children’s Chapter.

Children’s Chapter has been organised

by Music Generation Louth in collaboration with Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) as part of the upcoming Music Books Festival taking place in Dundalk on June 17 and 18, featuring a host of world-class musicians and composers.

The children have bee participating in Music Generation Louth’s Introducing Strings programme since September 2014 and have acquired a fantastic array of musical performance skills. Children’s Chap-

ter has been specially designed to introduce them to a new musical sound world and inspire them to compose.

Under the guidance of composer Deirdre McKay and Music Generation tutor Helen McArdle, the children are having great fun experimenting with sound and composing their own music.

They will also have to chance to meet and enjoy music making alongside the festival’s top class musicians Garth Knox viola and Agnes Vesterman cello who will visit the school for sessions on 17 June.

The project concludes at the Music Book’s lunchtime concert at St Nicholas’ Green Church, Dundalk at

1pm, Saturday 18 June when the children will join Garth and Agnes on stage to premiere their new musical chapter as a special encore.

Extend MIU at Louth

Fine Gael TD for Louth, Peter Fitzpatrick has said that the age restrictions need to be lifted at the Minor Injuries Unit at Louth County Hospital to allow children to be treated at the hospital.

“Currently there is an age restriction of 14 years in place at the Minor Injuries Unit at the Louth County Hospital. I’m appealing for this restriction to be lifted, to allow the services in place at the hospital to be made available to children.

“I recently raised this issue with the Minister for Health and the Health Service Executive. I have been informed that there is a working group currently reviewing the age attendances in the Minor Injuries Unit at Louth County Hospital. I have also been told that since it has been 10 years since children were last seen in the hospital, paediatric training needs to be put in place, before the age restriction can be lifted.

Friends of children hold golf classic

The Friends of Children Golf Classic takes place in Greenore golf club on Friday June 24.

The Friends of Children organization is in existence 17 years supporting children with life limiting illnesses. This includes the annual gala ball where very special children are guests of honour.

Talented pupils recreate events of 1916 The pupils of St. Peter`s NS delivered an exciting yet poignant rendering of “March to Glory” production at the St. Josephs GFC Centre on Thursday June 9. Prior to the commencement of the production a minutes silence was observed for recently deceased locals , especially Jackie Kinahan RIP who died that morning and who lived adjacent to the school.

In putting the production together directors Michelle Boyle and Pat Mulligan opted to pair Infants with a mixture older pupils and this move proved to be an inspiration. The different life styles of the “Toffs” and the “Urchins” in the first two scenes was quite vivid not only in the period costumes but in the recreational opportunities available to these diverse groupings at the time.

To the background sound of booming cannons, machine guns and rifles a battlefield

in the centre of Dublin was aptly portrayed as was a sombre Surrender scene when Pearse (T Brennan) called for a ceasefire. For many the tearful wedding ceremony of Grace Gifford (D Mellon) and Count Joseph Mary Plunkett (K Hodgers), and priest (C Meenan) will always be remembered not only for its poignancy but the haunting accompaniment from a single harp softly playing the tune of Grace.

Also on the night, Fr McEnroe introduced Pat Mulligans book “Daichead Bliain ag Fas” which coincided with the 40th anniversary of moving into the current school buildings. The book chronicles life in Dromiskin especially in the education sector and carries a wealth of detailed information accompanied by some rare

photography.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) stufdent, Elaine Hughes has this week been awarded Veterinary Nurse Student of the Year 2016 by the Irish Veterinary eNursing Association (IVNA). The IVNA Awards are presented r each year to three exceptional individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty for their patients and pet Elaine Hughes accepts her Veterinary Nurse Student of the Year award owners.

Elaine was nominated for the honour by a family in Swords in recognition of the ‘care, kindness and dedication’ she demonstrated while nursing their seriously ill golden retriever puppy, Marley back to health. During her student work placement at Lissenhall Veterinary Practice Swords, Elaine also displayed a high de-

gree of compassion and professionalism when caring for the same family’s terminally ill kitten, Kitty.

Elaine is a third year student in DkIT’s B.Sc in Veterinary Nursing, a NFQ level 7 course in veterinary nursing which is accredited by the Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI) and provides students with

diverse veterinary and scientific knowledge and skills which enables them to work as professional registered veterinary nurses (RVNs) both in Ireland and the rest of Europe. DkIT has a long history of success in producing award winning veterinary nursing graduates and Elaine is the fourth student in five years to win the award.

Commenting on the award, Doireann Dowling, Lecturer in Veterinary Nursing at DkIT said “We are thrilled that Elaine has been awarded Veterinary Nursing Student of the Year 2016 by the IVNA. Throughout her three years at DkIT, Elaine has shown an exceptionally high level of commitment to her learning”.

Darts league winners celebrate

The final round of darts has been thrown in the Dundalk and District Darts league, with 26 teams and over 200 players spread across four divisions and all but one of the four divisions have been decided with just the Third Division requiring a play off to decide the winner.

In the Premier Division it was newcomers Courtneys A that won with last year’s winners The Avenue Eagles coming second.

The first Division was won by The Lumpers who finished just two points ahead of The Fane in second place.

Division Two was one by Fergusons and Johnny Masons where runners up.

Division Three finished up with both The Barleycorn and The Stags Blue finishing level on points and level on sets won.

A play-off will now be required to determine who will be the winner. The play off will take place on June 30 in the Bodhran, the big gap is to allow players of both teams to attend the European championships in France.

Dearbhla O’Connor, 19, from Dromiskin was crowned the Blue Jean Country Queen in Athboy, Co. Meath at the end of a fun packed Festival weekend Dearbhla, a member of Fane Bridge Macra, beat off competition from 26 girls from all over Ireland and overseas to take the title. As a result she became the first girl from the Wee County to win the competition and received €1000 worth of prizes sponsored by Athboy Credit Union.

Soldier’ on Saturday afternoon.

Kicking off Friday night, when the Queens were interviewed on stage in front of an enthusiastic audience, the fun and craic flowed until Monday afternoon as live music was still playing throughout the town of Athboy, the home of the festival.

Speaking after her win, Dearbhla said it was an amazing feeling to have been crowned the Blue Jean Country Queen and is really looking forward to the year ahead and being part of the 30th anniversary celebrations next year.

Man allowed to keep his clean record

A MAN who paid €250 to the Maria Goretti Foundation was allowed to leave court with a clean record after pleading guilty to a public order charge.

Brian Ruddy of Castlehill, Carlingford, was arrested for his own safety on May 11 this year after Gardai found him highly intoxicated and unsteady on his feet at Market Square, Carlingford. Defence Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that aside from a drink driving conviction ten years ago, the defendant was of good character and had co-operated with Gardai on the night.

She added that the 38-year-old had been a carer for his father who has passed away, and his income came from his inheritance. She stated that on the night he caused no disturbance to anyone else and offered the money to the Maria Goretti Foundation.

Judge Conall Gibbons accepted the contribution to the charity and dismissed the case under the Probation Act.

Call to support Eric’s mountain trek Eric Beggs from Dundalk, along with the help of his local community is organising the Cooley Mountain Trek in aid of Irish charity Fighting Blindness.

This is the fourth year of the event which has grown in popularity since it began in 2013.

It is just one of the many activities that Eric has organised over the years to help find

treatments and cures for blindness through research.

Kevin Whelan, Chief Executive with Fighting Blindness said; “Eric has been a tireless campaigner and supporter of Fighting Blindness for many years – he has a fantastic talent for getting people in Co. Louth involved and we are very grateful for Eric’s efforts on our behalf”

The Cooley Mountain Trek will take place on Sunday, July 3 and includes a long walk (12km) for the more advanced walker and a short walk (6km) suitable for families. The 12km walk begins at 11am and the 6km walk at 12pm.

Buses will be available at 10.30am for the long walk participants and at 11.30 am for the short walk participants to

transport people from the Newry end of the Lisdoo car park to the event starting point at Lumper McArdles, Ravensdale.

Refreshments and entertainment will be provided after the event.

The Cooley Mountain Trek, kindly supported by Bar One Racing, EK Fuels (Dundalk), Anchor Tours, Moffet Engi-

neering, The Lisdoo Steak House, Fyffes and Park Racing Ardee. It promises to be a great day of entertainment for families and serious walkers alike.

RCNE presents Stars in Their Eyes

Rape Crisis North East (RCNE) are putting together the final preparations for what promises to be an amazing fundraising night when they present ‘Stars in Their Eyes”.

The eagerly awaited event, which will take place on the Ramada Hotel on Saturday June 18, is based on the popular 1990s television programme. This is an all singing, all dancing fun filled evening featuring local contestants who have generously volunteered to take to the stage and perform as their favourite act to raise funds for Rape Crisis North East.

All the participants will be out to impress judges, Mona Daly, Mark Dearey, Alvaro Luchessi and Brian Mohan. Pat O’Shaughnessy will act as MC on the night. St Mary’s College awards night in new school Principal Con McGinley welcomed all to the first prizegiving ceremony in the new St Mary’s College this week.

The successes of students in all aspect of College life were acknowledged and rewarded on the night.

This year the guest speaker was past pupil Sean Duffy Medieval History Professor at Trinity College, Dublin.

Among the award winners for their successes in sport this year was Sky Sports Mr Alan Craven presents the awar d for Best 2nd Year students to JuRepublic of Ireland dith Evborokhai and Joseph Oluw asanya.

Music Generation Louth Summer Celebration at An Táin

Music Generation Louth celebrated another successful year of music making with a spectacular evening concert at An Táin Theatre, Dundalk on Wednesday June 1.

Ninety-five children and young people took part in the event which showcased a selection of Music Generation’s current programme activity in the Dundalk area.

Acts included Dundalk Junior Brass Band and School Recorder Ensemble under the direction of Michael Gaskin, Songbirds singing

group led by Denise Hagan, Junior Strings directed by Jayne Graham, Louth Harp Ensemble directed

by Deirdre Ní Bhuachalla and a number of solo and chamber music performances on guitar, saxophone, flute and clarinet.

Established in 2011 as a new county-wide service to develop opportunities for children and young people to participate in music, Music Generation Louth now has an annual reach of 3,000 across a variety of programmes within schools and community settings.

Congratulations to Gearoid Garvey who competed for the very first time at a Karate Competition and who was successful in gaining a Bronze medal for Kumite (sparring) at the WKFI Ireland Karate League.
