Fears are growing for the safety of a local man who was part of the crew of the Irish Coastguard helicopter that went missing off the Mayo coast in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Chief Pilot Mark Duffy is one of three men who are still missing following the crash, along with winchmen Paul Ormsby and Ciáran smith.

Mark joined the Irish Coast Guard service over fifteen years ago and has been living in Blackrock with his wife and two children for a number of years. Mark, a hugely popular member of the Irish Coast Guards, was well known in the community of Blackrock and often visited local schools to explain the role of the Irish Coast Guard service to pupils.

James Larkin, officer in charge of the Irish Coast Guard at Greenore described Mark as ‘an absolute gentleman’ and said the whole crew in Greenore were devastated with the news that Mark was still missing.

“We worked with Mark here in

Greenore many times and as recently as last weekend when he was on a rescue mission in Carlingford after a helicopter crashed. Nothing was ever a problem for him and he was an absolute gentleman. The whole team here in Greenore are absolutely devastated and we send on our condolences to Mark’s family and colleagues. We’re all praying that somehow there can be a happy ending to this story,” stated James.

Capt Dara Fitzpatrick was taken from the sea but pronounced dead on Tuesday afternoon, while a spokesperson stated that hopes were fading for the remaining three crew members.

In a strange twist of fate, the missing r116 helicopter was involved in the dramatic rescue operation following a helicopter crash in Carlingford on sunday afternoon. That crash saw a father and son brought to hospital after their helicopter crashed in a garden in an area close to the Cooley mountains known locally as south Commons.

Fortunately, his son Dustin is in much better condition and he was transported to Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda by road.

The Marron family were well known in Carlingford having run a pub called ‘The Abbey’ on Dundalk St in the 1980s. This is the second air traffic accident to occur for the Marron family with Donie’s brother Kevin tragically dying in the Beaujolais crash back in November 1984.

Kevin was a journalist with the Sunday World and was on a plane travelling to

France when it crashed near Eastbourne in England killing nine on board.

Local councillor Peter Savage said he saw the helicopter on Sunday evening and noted that it was flying high.

“I was in my garden at home on Sunday evening and I did notice the helicopter and thought it looked to be up very high,” explained Peter. “Obviously it got into some difficulty and I believe the helicopter crashed close to if not in Donie’s back garden up at his house. I hear the son is doing ok but Donnie is in a serious condition in Beaumont.

We’re all hoping he has a full recovery,” stated Peter.

It is not known as yet what exactly caused the crash but The Air

Operation Varlet targets appear at local district court

A numbEr of people arrested under the Garda’s Operation Varlet, targeting drug dealing in Dundalk, have appeared in court.

The operation involved local Gardai along with regional Support units and the Drugs and Organised Crime bureau and happened last year.

At Dundalk District Court last week, 21 people were charged with having drugs for sale or supply before Judge John Coughlan. All of them were remanded on continuing bail to appear again on may 10.

Pauraic a Business Studies student in DKIT was understandably delighted to have come out on top of the hard-fought election and promised that he will fight tooth and nail to improve life for students in the college when he takes up his role in July.

“I’m thrilled that the students of DKIT have put their faith in me for this position and I am determined to do everything in my power to improve things for them around the college.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for myself

and I will be working very hard throughout the next academic year to ensure I do the very best for students in DKIT. I suppose I first thought about going for president a couple of years ago when I saw my friend Aaron Lawless get elected. He’s done a great job and I decided that I would try and continue his good work now that his term is over.

“My main focus during my manifesto was with mental health. I truly believe that the college is in dire need of a part time counsellor and I have already started to work on this and I think that we may even have this in place before the end of this

academic year.

“Accomodation has also been a huge problem for and parking is another thing I will be looking at”, he explained.

“Finally, I plan on starting a bar training course in the college which will be a great asset to students who plan on getting a J1 for a summer in America.

I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead and can’t wait to get started,” concluded Pauraic.

After an exhaustive campaign both Pauraic and his vice president Aaron will focus on their studies before taking up their seats in the students union office in July.

BUSH Post Primary School will be represented at the final of Junk Kouture after their entry ‘Expresso Yourself’ won through from the semi-final.

The dress was created by Leah Condon and Lucy Murphy out of empty coffee bean bags, under the guidance of art teacher, Amanda McDonnell.

Junk Kouture is a national competition for second level students in Ireland and Northern Ireland which challenges teenagers to create high-end wearable fashion from everyday junk that would normally find its way into the bin.

Junk Kouture aims to inspire and ignite passion in these teenagers while at the same time subtly educating them about the importance of recycling and reusing waste for the good of the planet. In the last Bush reached final with ‘Espresso Yourself’ number of years.

CúChulainn Archery success THE Irish Archery Indoor National took place recently with local club, CúChulainn Archers enjoying much success at the National Indoor Arena in Blanchardstown.

Adam Bradley won Gold in the Youth Barebow category at just eight years.

Brandon Dollard took a hard earned Silver in the Youth Recurve, while he was joined in the silverware with Fia-

chra Judge in the Gents Master Compound.

Deirdre Rogers also took home a Gold Medal and two Irish Records in the Ladies Master Compound.

Both Fiachra and Deirdre also shot the following day in the Seniors. The Head to Head saw Eamonn Rogers win bronze.

st Vincent’s students raise funds for Crumlin hospital ST VInCenT’S students Béibhinn nicRuairí and emma Durnin turned a trip to the hairdressers into a hugely successful fundraising event where they managed to raise almost €1650.

The inventive pair benefitted two charities when they donated their long locks to the Rapunzel Foundation, while simultaneously raising money for Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin.

Béibhinn explained that a personal experience persuaded her to do something for the hospital. “my sister was receiving treatment in Crumlin children’s hospital, but due to lack of space

and facilities she, along with a number of other patients had to have surgery in Blackrock. I wanted to do something

to help raise much needed funds for the hospital.

We decided to look at donating our hair, while organising sponsorship

of the event”. emma added that the student body in St Vincent’s were incredibly generous. “We explained

to them what we were trying to achieve and they were delighted to donate to such a worthy cause”, she stated.

Driver is given chance to avoid prison

A mAn who was caught driving without insurance was given the opportunity to avoid a prison sentence after his case was adjourned for a Community Service Report.

Padraig Kieran of Dunbin, Knockbridge, was observed by Gardai in Cedarwood Park on April 3 last year. He got out of

the car at Beechmount Drive and threw the keys away.

There was no insurance or tax displayed, and he failed to produce documents.

The court heard that the defendant had five previous convictions and had been disqualified for 10 years in 2010 for a drink driving offence.

Solicitor, Frank mcDonnell, stated that his 42-year-old client, had a difficulty with drink and was almost killed in a serious traffic accident in recent years. He accepted that while this was a first conviction for no insurance, the disqualification compounded the offence.

journed the case to May 10 for a Community Service Report and recommended 100 hours in lieu of four months, but stated that the sentence would be suspended if he was unsuitable for Community Service on medical grounds. He also imposed a four-year driving ban.

Castletown Girls school have celebrated safer Internet Day with each class taking part in various workshops and activities to promote a safer internet for all users. these workshops tackled how to use the internet, how to act safely while on the in-

ternet and who to trust on the internet. Cyberbullying was discussed in the senior classes as the school feel this is an important and current issue. the children read the “Golden Rules” which include the “Granny Rule” - don’t share a photo on the internet

that you wouldn’t show your Granny. all classes participated in a safer Internet Day competition, some coloured beautiful pictures, others designed posters with witty slogans and the senior classes safely emailed photos they had taken.

Man is trying to turn his life around

A MAn who appeared at Dundalk District court on drugs charges asked for a chance to prove that he is making an effort to turn his life around.

Keith lynch of Drakestown, Smarmore, Ardee, was stopped by Gardai on April 8 and during a search they found cannabis in six plastic bags valued at €640. He admitted that the drugs were for sale or supply and said he sold them to three or four friends. the court heard that the 25-year-old had been given the benefit of the Probation Act for a similar offence in 2013.

Solicitor, Dermot Monahan, stated that his client was a father of a four-year-old who had recently returned to study at DkIt, while working part-time as a security man.

He had been the victim of a serious assault in 2014 which left him with a fractured eye socket and broken jaw. As a result he had taken painkilling and sleeping tablets which he became addicted to.

Mr Monahan stated that his client had made a foolish decision and while he had been addicted to cannabis, he was now completely off it. He added that Mr lynch’s partner warned that she would not stay with him if he didn’t get help.

He added that he was trying to deal with the root cause of his problem by attending counselling and asked the court to give him the chance to show that he was turning his life around. the defendant stated that if a urine sample was taken it would show that he was no longer taking drugs.

Judge Gerard Haughton noted that the offence took place almost a year ago but the defendant had not started counselling until February. He adjourned the case until May 17 for a Probation Report and ordered that a urine sample be provided.

Good news for guidance counsellors

Recently retired guidance counsellor Gerry Malone has welcomed the announcement of additional guidance counselling posts from next year.

Gerry who was a guidance counsellor in colasite Rís up until January is a member of the Institute of Guidance counsellors and has been openly critical of the government’s decision to cut up to 53% of the service in all schools since 2012. Speaking last year during a meeting in colaiste Rís to address the savage cuts, IGc president Betty Mclaughlin

outlined just how bad the situation had become and implored the government to reverse the cuts.

“Prior to Budget 2012, each school received an ‘ex-quota’ allocation of hours for the delivery of guidance counselling from the Department of education and Skills, calculated on the basis of 22 hours of guidance counselling for every 500 pupils”, she stated.

Speaking last week Michael Martin, leader of Fianna Fáil confirmed that Minister for education Richard Bruton will deliver on the budget commitment to restore ring-fenced

guidance counselling posts to schools from September 2017. this represents a huge victory for the campaigners who have been looking for a restoration of pre-2012 guidance counsellor numbers and according to Gerry Malone it represents a major victory for students all over the country.

“I and many other people were obviously delighted to hear confirmation that the cuts in our profession will be reversed,” stated Gerry. “Guidance counsellors play a key role in every school in the country and I personally thought it was a disgrace that Ruari Quinn

implied that the job could be done by any teacher. the role of a guidance counsellor is more than just helping a student choose a career path. As well as educational guidance they also give personal and social guidance and provide help and information with regards to any mental health issues a student may be having.

“We have fought long and hard to get our hours back and I’m delighted to say the battle is over and we have won. there were times I couldn’t see light at the end of the tunnel but thankfully sense has prevailed,” noted Gerry.

Students showcase businesses LOCAL Enterprise Office Louth hosted the County Finals of the Student Enterprise Awards on Tuesday March 7 with over 200 students taking park.

The competition is an exciting and rewarding experience for young people, creating a culture where students think more readily of becoming entrepreneurs and setting up their own business in the future.

Speaking at the event Peggy McGlynn, of Louth County Enterprise Board revealed that there was a wide range of ideas involved.

Transition Year students visit to Dublin Zoo

ST. MARY’S College TY (Transition Year) students paid a visit to Dublin zoo recently and it proved to be a day full of learning.

The main event of the day was the talk from one of the zookeepers, but before that, the students had an hour to themselves, giving them an opportunity to explore the ever-popular zoo.

The year group of 60 students had been split

As a result, Charlie McDonagh of 102 Mullaharlin Park, Dublin Road, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court where his case was adjourned for a Community Service Report.

The court heard that at 1.45pm on August 16 last year, Mr McDonagh was stopped at a checkpoint. His two children were wearing seatbelts but one, a six-year-old, did not have a

booster seat as required.

The defendant became aggressive and when he got out of the car he shouted at the Gardai: “I hope a stolen car knocks you off the road and kills you stone dead”.

He got into his car and drove off before returning a minute later. He was aggressive and began revving his car before being arrested.

The court heard that he had 37 previous offences including six for public order.

The defence solicitor stated that the

defendant was extremely embarrassed by what had happened and that he didn’t normally act like that. He apologised to the Gardai.

The solicitor added that Mr McDonagh, a father of eight and grandfather of one, had problems and mental health difficulties.

Judge Gerard Haughton noted that this offence occurred very shortly after a previous offence. He adjourned the case to May 17 for a Community Service Report and recommended 100 hours in lieu of three months.

Documentary on Aiken Barracks

FOR most locals living in and around Dundalk and the North-East region, the daily goings-on behind the walls of Aiken Barracks are a bit of a mystery.

Despite its rich and varied history – encompassing its buildings, its people, its events, its memorabilia and its artefacts - it remains an unexplored place to most.

However, all will be revealed in a new documentary on the barracks to be aired on LMFM on St Patrick’s Day. This one-hour radio documentary knocks down the walls of Aiken Barracks and offers listeners a chance to partake in a reconstructed oral history of the barracks, told by those who know it best.

It will be broadcast at Noon on St Patrick’s Day.

Driving to work while disqualified

A MAN who was seen by Gardai driving while disqualified was given a five-month prison sentence at Dundalk District Court.

Vladimir Prokepiev of 11 Chestnut Grove, Bay Estate, Dundalk, was told by Judge Gerard Haughton that the custodial sentence was being imposed because it appeared that a previous suspended sentence had no effect on him.

The judge stated that he was not prepared to suspend the sentence on this occasion, or impose a Community Service Order.

“He has shown disregard for the law and the court order. He had the benefit of a suspended sentence and it doesn’t appear to have had an effect”, stated the judge.

The court heard that on January 30 this year, Mr Prokopiev was observed driving at Upper Marshes by a Garda who knew he was disqualified. He was stopped and had no insurance or licence. He had ten previous convictions and had been given a six year ban.

Solicitor, Niall Breen, stated that the 48-year-old was originally from Russia and had been in Ireland for ten years. He had been driving the car to Dunleer where he works as a welder. He accepted that he had a bad record and was at risk of a custodial sentence.

Judge Haughton imposed a five-month sentence and 10-year driving ban but fixed recognisances for an appeal.

Debaters aiming for national gold ST VINCENT’S debating and public speaking team are set to bring their rhetorical prowess to a national stage yet again with their forthcoming performance in the national final of the Knights of St Columbanus public speaking ompetition.

The culmination of six months hard work, the girls clinched their place at the event in Maynooth after a rousing speech on the importance of building bridges, not walls.

Under the guidance of their teacher Victoria O’Hagan, Aoife McGeough, Ayumi Catibusic and Eimear Smyth hope that their powerful message will see them bring home the gold.

Louth tourism to benefit from Fleadh COUNTY Louth this weekend secured a massive boost for tourism, Irish traditional arts and business with the announcement that Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann will be hosted in Drogheda in August 2018.

The week-long event attracts approximately 400,000 visitors to the region and is es-

timated to be worth over €40 million to the economy of the region.

Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is the largest annual celebration of Irish music, language, song and dance throughout the world.

Judge had no choice but to disqualify

A MAN who admitted driving without insurance was told by Judge Gerard Haughton at Dundalk District Court that he had no choice but to impose a disqualification.

Colla Peadar MacMathuna of 55 St Macartans Villas, Carrickmacross, argued through his solicitor, Niall Breen, that he needed his licence to travel to Edenderry where he worked as a plasterer.

However, Judge Haughton stated that this did not constitute a special reason and as a result he was precluded by law from doing anything other than imposing the mandatory penalty.

The 35-year-old defendant was stopped by Gardai on July 9 last year.

Judge Haughton imposed a two-year ban and a €500 fine.

Spat after being asked to leave bus

A MAN who spat at a Bus Eireann employee after being refused permission to travel on a bus was sentenced to three months in prison at Dundalk District Court.

John Paul Kevitt, with an address at Simon Community, 63 Barrack St, Dundalk, boarded a bus at the Bus Eireann depot on July 22 last year at 10am.

An employee informed him that he was not allowed to travel following a previous incident.

While he was walking away he spat at the employee and used offensive language, while adding, “I hope you enjoy your phlegm”.

Solicitor, Dermot Monahan, stated that the 30-year-old defendant, who had 37 previous convictions, was a heroin addict since he was 17. He began taking the drug at a time when he had no knowledge of how dangerous it was.

He added that the defendant is fine when he is off heroin but at the time was under the influence. Mr Kevitt, who is currently serving a sentence, apologised and recongised that it was a disgusting act.

Judge Gerard Haughton stated that it was a nasty type of assault on a person who was carrying out public duty as he imposed the sentence.

Noel claims first win of the season THE 18th hole at Dundalk has, over the years, ruined many players’ chances of winning and last Sunday Noel Crowe could have been forgiven for thinking it had cost him overall victory in the Second Round of the Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock Winter League.

DkIT’s Short film Strawberry heads to America DunDAlk Institute of Technology course Bachelor of Arts in Video & Film Production short film Strawberry has been shown at The Capital Irish Film Festival in Washington D.C. The festivals ran from March 2 to 5 and according to one of the makers of the short film all involved in the production were delighted their work got picked for screening in America.

Eleanor Bell was part of the crew who completed the film last March and she spoke

of her delight when she heard the film had been picked for screening in Washington.

“We were delighted to hear that Strawberry had been selected to screen at the Capital Irish Film Festival in Washington, D.C. which took place last week. This festival is a part of the organization Solas nua that is dedicated to showing new Irish Arts. We are all so happy our film got a chance to be a part of this great Irish festival,” stated Eleanor.

It was a very enjoyable film to make and most of us to made that film are in our final year in college now in DkIT. For me personally the goal would be to be involved in the Irish film industry in some shape or form.

Filmmaking is a real passion for me and it would be great to make a career out of it,” she added.

The short film

‘Strawberry’ is about Stephen, a gormless man in his early 20s.

He reluctantly has to work at the family Strawberry stall, ruining his plans for the day. He carries out his shift, but not as he expects. Throughout the day Stephen is pestered by various characters, changing his day in a way he could have never imagined.

The film was filmed around various Dundalk locations such

as Shore Road and Oriel Centre Dundalk Gaol. The cast includes kieran Boland, David O’Boyle, Pat Deery, George Bracebridge and Patrick Fitzsimons. FOR the second year in a row Coláiste Rís will be represented in the National Finals of the Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion Competition.

Models Emma Duffy, Áine O’ Hagan, Uche Ibeh and James Mc Carron excelled themselves in the Eastern Regional Final held in the Helix Theatre, Dublin last week where the school’s exhibits won three out of the nine places on offer and now go forward to the National final to be held at the end of April. A total of 82 costumes were on show. The Junk Kouture competition calls for second level students to design and create wearable, fashionable outfits from rubbish that would otherwise be destined for the bin. The Transition Year students from Coláiste Rís themed their costumes on ideas such as Pandora’s Box, Wonka’s Wonder, Labels Are For Bottles and Can You See Me Now. They were assisted by teachers Mardeen Mc Caughey and Breege Marie Dorrian. The garments were modelled on the catwalk and judged on overall design, the use of recycled materials, the performance on the catwalk and an online vote which took place a couple of weeks ago. The local school’s achievement is remarkable as Coláiste Rís was the only school on the night to have 3

COST OF INSURANCE KEY MOTORIST ISSUE FOR 2017 FOLLOWING significant increases in the cost of motor insurance in recent years, almost 95% of motorists view rising premiums as a “very important” issue for the year ahead.

94.46% of over 7,000 respondents to an AA Motor Insurance survey viewed the issue of rising premiums as highly important for the year ahead, with a further 4.48% viewing the cost of motor insurance as ‘somewhat important.’ According to the latest Consumer Price Index from the CSO the cost of insurance has increased by 6.4% year on year, following on from an 8.9% year on year increase in December 2016.

“We have been lobbying on this all through last year and we did see some commitment from Government.” said Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs. “The Working Group & OIreachtas Committee reports are both good documents but they must be implemented.

Away from insurance, following a setback in terms of road deaths in 2016, road safety and the condition of Irish roads were also viewed as key issues which Irish motorists want tackled in the year ahead.

According to Garda statistics there were 188 deaths on Irish roads in 2016, while there have been three more deaths on our roads as of March 2 than there had been at this point last year. Following the increase in deaths, 92.78% of those surveyed described road safety as a “very important” issue for 2017. Meanwhile, a further 5.59% viewed the issue as ‘somewhat important’ with just 0.11% viewing road safety as ‘not at all important.’
