Sinn Féín Councillor Antóin Watters has welcomed the inclusion of the Narrow Water Bridge in the “New Decade New Approach” document released last Thursday as part of the restoration of the institutions in the North of Ireland. The Omeath councillor believes that the project will finally come to fruition within the next year or two. The proposed bridge, stretching from Warrenpoint in County Down to Omeath in County Louth, was due to open in 2015 but has encountered many problems. After several delays and a significant funding shortfall, the project was scrapped in 2013. Cllr Watters who has been

instrumental in ensuring the project was kept to the fore in Louth insisted that the project is shovel ready and work can begin as soon as funding is secured. “Over my term on Louth County Council I have worked to ensure the Narrow Water Bridge project has been kept on the agenda and remains a shovel ready project. Back in 2018 when the planning permission was scheduled to lapse I had to keep pressure on both Louth County Council and also Newry, Mourne and Down Council to ensure this did not happen and that the necessary works were carried out. richly deserved giving the amount of work he put into his project. “Congratulations to Solomon for achieving 3rd place in his category

(Junior individual in Technology). He thoroughly deserved his award as it is recognition of the hundreds of hours he has spent selflearning and programming both his mobile app and smart cane prototype. A great body of work for someone who is still only in second year,” remarked Shane. Meanwhile the overall winner of the Young Scientist competition were 16 year old duo Cormac Harris and Alan O’Sullivan from Colaiste Choilm in Cork for a project entitled ““A statistical investigation into the prevalence of gender stereotyping in 5-7 year olds & the development of an initiative to combat gender bias”.

tourism in North Louth and this project will be very good for the whole region both north and south. It’s a project that has been talked about for years and there have been many hiccups along the way but I believe now that the right people are in place to push it forward and I’m hopeful that work can begin on the Narrow Bridge within the next year or two. It also emerged at that time that “Louth County Council had already spent €2 million on the project so I was very sure I wasn’t going to let them write that

off. It was vital that I kept the pressure on.” Cllr Watters is hopeful that “should this new deal be accepted we can finally see Narrow Water Bridge completed. It is imperative that this is done to further boost the tourist industry in the North Louth area.” “I will continue to work with our Sinn Féin team to deliver this project and I am hopeful that after three years the new Assembly will be a more fair and equal power sharing Executive and we can see projects like this come to fruition,” he added.

There was success for Grammar student Solomon Doyle at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition as he was awarded third place in his category. Solomon, who is in second year, returned to the RDS having also represented the school last year and left a good impression on the judges who commended him for his work. His project is to help the visually impaired navigate their surroundings in a new innovative way. He developed a mobile app that links to Google maps and speaks directions and corrects the user if you move off a programmed route. In addition to this he used

Vinny Perth wins Airtricty/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Personality of the Year By Paul Byrne

Dundalk manager Vinny Perth has been named as the Airtricty/ Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Personality of the Year for 2019. The popular Dubliner enjoyed a near flawless debut season in charge of Dundalk with the FAI Cup final loss to Shamrock Rovers the only disappointment of an excellent campaign. Vinny took over the hot seat at Dundalk last year from his predecessor Stephen Kenny who left to take up a role with the Irish U21 side. Perth had huge boots to fill following Kenny’s magnificent trophy laden six year stint at the club but he took the challenge on without fear and came within a penalty shootout of securing an historic first treble for the club. Perth, who served as Stephen Kenny’s assistant manager during those six successful years won the league

at a canter with closest rivals Shamrock Rovers eleven points behind come the end of the season. There was also a successful EA Sports Cup run which culminated in a penalty shootout victory against Derry City in the Brandywell.

Unfortunately for Vinny the season ended last week on somewhat of a sour note as his side lost a penalty shootout to rivals Shamrock Rovers in the FAI Cup final in the Aviva stadium. Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers was also

celebrating at the awards ceremony as he won the Goalkeeper of the Year award. Rogers began the season with a few supporters questioning if the 38-year old still had what it took to compete at this level. And when Aaron Carey was signed by Vinny Perth

it looked as though the Meathman would have a battle on his hands to retain his place in the team. However, Rogers answered all critics in emphatic style as he enjoyed an excellent campaign which eventually led to him signing a new contract with the club.

Clann Naofa to host Leinster boxing Clann Naofa Boxing Club have received a major honour after being selected to host the Leinster Boxing Championships from categories boy and girl 1,2 and 3 on March 14. It is a great privilege and honour to be selected for the third time to host the Leinster Championships. Head Coach James O’Neill who is also an Irish coach commented that this honour is a major event for Muirhevnamor. “We have amazing facilities within our community and a lot of community volunteers that hosting this event will showcase. “I am extremely proud of all the hard work that is carried out by numerous volunteers in many various projects that ultimately all works towards keeping our young, vulnerable generation off the streets and away from the alternative lifestyles such as drug and alcohol abuse and many other anti social behaviours. “Within our community Clann Naofa boxing club provides our children and ado-

lescents with a safe environment to grow and prosper, boxing is only one element we consider our wee club to be a family where children and young peoples emotional well-being is paramount.,” explained James. “Many of the children who have came through our doors over the past 21 years went on to achieve great success in their own personal lives and are still affiliated with our club and continue to now send their own children. “It gives the coaches of the club a great sense of pride to know that you made a difference to many young peoples lives and if the club had not existed many of our

success stories may not have the same happy ending. With regards to boxing, Clann Naofa is a small club with a handful of dedicated coaches who give up their own time; with that said we have achieved great success within the boxing ranks; to date we have achieved over 130 Irish titles, over 140 Leinster titles four European medallists (Shauna O’Callaghan, Evelyn Igaro, Dearbhla Tinnelly and Nasia) and two who have reached world championship status (Shauna O’Callahan and Evelyn Igaro). We have also recenlty celebrated Evelyn Igaro becoming Irish Elite Champion at only 18 years of age,” added James.

Funding for leisure centre improvements is welcomed CLLR Erin McGreehan congratulated Louth County Council on receiving funding for Disability access improvements on Dundalk Leisure Centre Councillor Erin McGreehan has welcomed the announcement that Louth County Council will receive €300,000 for the refurbishment and upgrade of swimming pool wet changing village with major emphasis on disability access. Total cost of the project is projected to be €492,000. “It is great news for all in our community, equity of access to

services and facilities for all our citizens is one of my major concerns. “I fundamentally believe that society, by being ill-equipped to suit differing abilities, creates disability and only when our communities have equitable access will we have a fairer and more inclusive society”. Cllr McGreehan congratulated the work of the council officials in successfully applying for this grant funding which will make a real positive impact on people’s quality of life”.

The battle to claim one of the five seats on offer in the Louth constituency looks set to commence after Taoiseach Leo Varadkar confirmed that the General Election will take place on Saturday February 8. Initially the Taoiseach had indicated that his preference would be to have an election this coming summer but speaking on RTE Radio on Sunday he stated that ‘circumstances had changed’ following the successfully negotiated Brexit deal late last year. It was confirmed on Tuesday that the election will go ahead on February 8 when Fine Gael will be hoping to claim an historic third successive election victory following success for Enda Kenny in 2011 and 2015. Locally there are ten candidates confirmed so far for what is sure to be a keenly contested election. The confirmed runners so far are Deputy Fergus O’Dowd (FG), Cllr John McGahon (FG), Deputy

Mark Dearey

Declan Breathnach (FF), Cllr James Byrne (FF), Deputy Imelda Munster (SF), Cllr RuairÍ Ó’Mhurchú (SF), Sen. Ged Nash (Lab), Mark Dearey (Greens), Eamonn Sweeney (Renua), Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick (IND). Traditionally Louth has been a strong two-seater constituency for Fianna Fail but

in recent elections that has changed with Fine Gael returning two candidates (Peter Fitzpatrick and Fergus O’Dowd) for the past two elections. Sinn Fein enjoyed their best result locally last time out with both Imelda Munster and Gerry Adams claiming seats. The fifth and final seat went to Fianna Fail’s Declan

Breathnach as he celebrated his first general election success. There is guaranteed to be at least one new face this time around following Gerry Adams’ announcement that he would not be contesting the forthcoming election. Sinn Fein are pinning their hopes on Louth County Councillor Ruairí Ó’Mhurchú to retain that seat as he begins his debut campaign alongside Drogheda’s Imelda Munster. Peter Fitzpatrick will be looking to make it three election successes on the trot but this time he must do so as an independent following his decision to leave Fine Gael in 2018. Fine Gael’s John McGahon will be hoping to emulate his uncle Brendan who served as a TD locally from 1982 to 2002. The most recent addition to the candidates list was that of the Green Party’s Mark Dearey who has decided to return to public life following his decision not to contest the local elections last May.

Noel has profitable day at Dundalk Golf Club

Club Treasurer Noel Reid (15) had a profitable day on Sunday when he won the first singles competition of 2020 by one shot from Austin Carroll (12) and Pat Daly (21). Having started with a three-point par at the opening hole and a two point bogey at the next, Reid then produced a four point birdie at the third to get to nine points after three holes. The next three holes yielded a steady two points apiece and were then followed by threepoint pars at the seventh and eighth before a two-point bogey on the par three ninth meant he turned for home having covered the front nine in an impressive 23pts. A second birdie of the round at the par five 10th only yielded three points because it was one of two holes where he didn’t have a shot but it brought him to 26pts with four holes to go. He suffered a setback at the index two 11th where he failed to score but bounced back immediately by parring the 12th for three points and, after a two-point bogey at the 13th, he finished with a par on the 18th for another three points and final total of 34pts which was enough for him to take the overall victory. Carroll’s 33pts earned him the Category 1 prize while Daly took Category 3. Edmund Sheridan (14), who shot 32pts, claimed the Category 2 prize while Conall Mullins (19) was the Juvenile Prize winner after shooting 32pts.

Munster calls for support to stop pension age increase to 67 years Sinn Féin TD Imelda Munster has urged all parties to support Sinn Féin’s bill to stop planned pension age increases, which will be debated in the Dáil in the coming weeks. Deputy Munster said: “Fine Gael plan to increase the pension age to 67 years in January 2021, with a further increase to 68 years planned for 2028. This would mean that today’s workers, particularly those approaching retirement, may not access their State Pension at 66 years, as is their current entitlement.

“These increases will see Ireland have one of the highest pension ages in the world – well above the majority of our EU counterparts. “At the moment, people who have worked hard all their lives who are obliged by contract to retire at 65 years are forced on to a jobseekers payment for one year before they can receive their State Pension at 66 years. From next year, retirees will be forced on to a jobseekers payment for two years. “This is an injustice to workers who have worked hard and paid

their taxes, in some cases for a lifetime. “Sinn Féin have consistently called on the Government to suspend these pension age

increases. They were agreed behind closed doors without any debate or vote and therefore, they should not go ahead. “Our bill calling on the Government to establish a Pension Age Task Force will look at pension age and make recommendations based on evidence rather than cost cutting. This Bill will be debated in the Dáil in the coming weeks. “Nobody due to retire should be forced on to a jobseekers payment. I hope that all parties will support this Sinn Féin Bill.”

Amy hoping to make Olympic dream a reality in Bulgaria By Paul Byrne

Dundalk boxer Amy Broadhurst’s dreams of representing Ireland at this summer’s Olympics in Tokyo can take a step closer to reality next week. The Muirhevnamor southpaw has been picked in a 20-strong male and female Ireland squad, for next week’s Strandja Multi-Nations event in Bulgaria. Amy will fight in the 60kg category which also features Kellie Harrington who is her main rival for that coveted Olympic spot. Harrington who won gold in the lightweight division at the Boxing World Championships last year is currently favourite to board the plane to Tokyo this summer but that could all change if Amy can better her performance in Bulgaria. The draw for the multi-nations event in Bulgaria takes place later this week and according to Amy she is really looking forward to the event. “This is a huge event

Amy Broadhurst

for myself as I have a chance to really put my hand up for Olympic qualification. Myself and Kellie are fighting in the same 60kg division and we will meet each other at some stage if we both keep winning our fights. There is only one spot on the Irish team at 60kg for the Olympics so at this stage it’s basically either

myself or Kellie. If I do face her next week and beat her I will have put myself in a great position to get that spot for Tokyo. “I’ve been training very hard for these championships and I feel fit and ready to go.” explained Amy. With so much at stake Amy and Kellie’s rivalry has seen the duo

exchange some less than friendly words towards each other over the last twelve months as both ladies stake their claim for that elusive Olympic spot. However, Amy insists that there is no animosity between them currently and there will be no tension when the two meet next week. “No, everything at the moment is fine between us. We’ve spoken and sorted everything out and I don’t think there’s going to be any issues. We are just two people who are chasing the same dream and we both understand that. I really hope we meet each other next week as I feel we need to fight each other to see who is the best currently at 60kg. If we don’t meet and do the same next week then I feel we will have to maybe box behind closed doors to decide who is going to Tokyo. For now though I am completely focused on the job in hand next week and look forward to representing my country in Bulgaria,” stated Amy.

WuXi Biologics pleased with tremendous Recruitment

An estimated 2000 people turned out to the two WuXi Biologics open days which the company held in Dundalk on Saturday, December 28 and in Drogheda on Saturday January 4. The open days were held to give people in the local community the opportunity to hear firsthand about the range of job opportunities which the establishment of the WuXi Biologics facility in Mullagharlin on the outskirts of Dundalk will present. When it becomes operational in 2021, the WuXi Biologics facility in Dundalk, which will employ 400 people, will be home to the largest ‘Factory of the Future’ contract manufacturing single-use biologics production facility in the world. A second WuXi project, a WuXi Vaccines facility, which was announced in

WuXi for the first time during the two highly successful Recruitment Open Days.

Illustration of the WuXi Vaccines facility

November 2019 will employ an additional 200 people when it becomes operational in 2024. This new project announced last November will manufacture a vaccine for the global market and is among the first of its kind in the industry. The combined projects on the WuXi Campus, supported by IDA Ireland, will create several hundred new jobs. The two new facilities will provide exciting career opportu-

nities for talent to work in a world leading and innovative BioPharma company. As it begins its 2020 recruitment programme, WuXi is looking for people with various skills from different backgrounds, both scientific and nonscientific. At the Dundalk and Drogheda Recruitment Open Days members of the WuXi Biologics start-up team were on hand in numbers to meet and speak with attendees about jobs

which will be available in Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Supply-Chain and other business functions. Sharon Conlon, HR & Recruitment Lead for the WuXi Biologics facility in Dundalk said the WuXi team was delighted to hear at first hand the level of interest which the two WuXi projects have generated nationally and along the M1 Corridor, and they expect that a good number of near term hires will have met

“We anticipate that a number of the hires for the WuXi Campus will come from the within the general M1 geography and that many future employees will be attracted not just by the exciting jobs and career opportunities which WuXi will provide, but also by the ease of commute and corresponding life-style attractions. Ireland has become a hot-spot for talent in Biologics with many global firms operating well-established biologics medicine production facilities around the country. The WuXi Campus will look to attract talent to Dundalk not just from the Pharma and BioPharma sectors but also from other highly regulated manufacturing industries,” she stated.

Louth TD and Fianna Fáíl Spokesperson on Cross border co-operation Declan Breathnach raised the issue of the Narrow Water Bridge with Minister for Transport Shane Ross in the Dáíl. The Narrow Water Bridge was first proposed in 2008. Three years later, Leo Varadkar as the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport said “the Department is not in a position to proceed any further with the Narrow Water Bridge project, and beyond 2011 no further funding will be made available for it.” The Special European Union Programmes Body (SEUPB) had pledged million €17.4 million euro towards the Narrow Water project. However, it withdrew

this offer in 2013 because additional funding of €6m from the Department of Transport had not been provided. Planning permission on the Northern Ireland side of the project was due to lapse in October 2017 but Louth County Council, the project’s applicant, sent workers to the site to conduct works to preserve permissions. Louth County Council confirmed to Deputy Breathnach that the planning permission for the project in the North was retained and that planning permission in the Republic will not expire. The council confirmed they have spent over €2.2 million on the project to date and said what was needed to progress the project was “a substantial fund-

Ireland and from Newry, Mourne and Down Council.” This project was to be put on the agenda of the North-South Ministerial Council but this has not met since the collapse of Northern Ireland Executive in January 2017. “Boris Johnson and other politicians are talking about building a bridge between the North of Ireland and Scotland. This Larne to Stranraer bridge would be 20 miles long and cost billions. It’s madness to think of this when the bridge from Omeath in Louth to Narrow Water in Down would be 660 metres long and was to cost only €6 million to the state,” he concluded.
