Demand for answers over council’s €300k

A number of councillors have questioned how the local authority is in a position to make up a shortfall of €300,000 following the Drogheda pay parking debacle, having previously insisted that there was no money available.

Last week Louth County Council Chief Executive Joan Martin released a statement indicating that she was suspending charging for parking in Drogheda pending the adoption of new Bye Laws having received legal advice on the issue.

Joan Martin went on to estimate that the council would lose approximately €300,000 in lost revenue over the three-month period where parking will be free in Drogheda.

However, she insisted that this shortfall would not affect the budget for 2018 and indicated that she had identified a number of sources to meet the sum involved.

Local primary school pupils brought their favourite book characters to life last Friday as both students and teachers celebrated ‘World Book Day’. World Book Day encourages children to enjoy new authors and books, and is celebrated in schools, libraries, homes, and bookstores all over the globe.

Final preparations for St Patrick’s Day celebrations The final preparations are being put in place for the local St Patrick’s Day celebrations with parades taking place in

Dundalk, Blackrock, Cooley Peninsula and Ardee.

groups are embracing the ‘Dream Big’ theme in planning their entries for the parade which sets off through Dundalk’s main thoroughfare at 1pm from the Castletown Road.

Meanwhile, the parade in Blackrock will commence at 1.30pm at Cocklehill. It will proceed along the main street and finish at Sandy Lane.

The first ever Cooley Peninsula parade will start from Bush at 1pm, while the Ardee parade will commence at 3pm.

The Dundalk parade is sponsored by Dundlak Credit Union and will feature a family fun zone and food market while the Ireland v England rugby game will be shown on a big screen.

“We want as many people as possible to celebrate the day in Dundalk Town Centre.

Of course we expect huge crowds for the parade as the children absolutely love the Family Fun Zone.

“We also knew there would be many people who wanted to see the

Grand Marshal, Zoe Conway, will take pride of place at the Parade with her children set to join her for the once in a lifetime experience.

The Dundalk woman has gone on to become an internationally recognised musician, performing on stages throughout the world.

As was the case last year, there will be two viewing stands along the route.

Along with the Grand Marshal/sponsors stand, there will once again be a second stand for representatives of various charities, voluntary and community groups.

Following the Parade the fun continues in the Town Centre.

Traders in Bridge St. have insisted they will keep on fighting to ensure that their street will not be forgotten when upgrade works begin in Clanbrassil St and St Nicholas Quarter later this year.

Joanne Lavelle chairperson of ‘Bridge Street Community Traders and Residents Regeneration Association’ was

speaking in the wake of comments from Louth County Council’s Frank Pentony who re-iterated the local authority’s stance that the money simply wasn’t available at the moment to include Bridge St. in the upgrade plans.

At the beginning of 2016 it was announced that Dundalk had received €2m which would go towards a regeneration project to rejuvenate an rea stretching from ‘Market Square to the big bridge’. The total cost of the project was projected to be in the region of €4m with Louth County Council matching the EU’s contribution of €2m.

The scheme originally took in the entirety of Clanbrassil Street, Church Street, Linenhall Street and Bridge Street and included re-paving, road improvements, pedestrian crossings, new lights, an extension of CCTV as well as free wi-fi. At the announcement of the ambitious plans director of serv-

ices Frank Pentony said the rejuvenation scheme would cover an area from Market Square to the big bridge (over the Castletown River) with the idea behind the project to establish a new identity for the key gateway into Dundalk Town Centre.

However, late last year at a county council meeting, councillors were informed that Bridge St would not be a part of the project due to a lack of funding. This represented a huge blow to traders in Bridge St. who believe that they have been neglected in recent years by Louth County Council. In response a new group was formed last week under the name of ‘Bridge Street Community Traders and Residents Regeneration Association’. Those comments were repeated last week

by Frank Pentony at the Dundalk Municipal monthly meeting but Joanne says traders in Bridge St. refused to be deterred.

The Transition Year students of St Louis Secondary School are taking to the stage this week with their production of Mary Poppins.

The show will take place in the school’s Chapel Hall from Wednesday March 14 to Friday March 16 at 7.30pm each night.

Mary Poppins is produced and directed by teachers Selena Reynolds and Marie Meehan, with set design by Aine McEnaney and special effects by Padraig Mulholland.

There are still some tickets available from the school office priced €10.

The NCBI is donating unused long canes to people in Ghana through a joint initiative with a Dundalk based aid development charity.

We are part of an eye screening team who do outreach into remote villages. We approached the Dundalk branch of the NCBI and Sean Doran and other staff rowed in behind us, recognising the huge need for this help in what is a developing country. We couldn’t have done this without the help of NCBI. It is wonderful generosity on behalf of the NCBI to gift us its unused aids for people with sight loss. De La Salle reach All-Ireland Debating final for first time

There was cause for celebration last week in the De La Salle as their Irish debating team reached the All Ireland Final’s which will take place on March 21.

Comórtas Díospóireachta Uí Chadhain is a debating competition for Gaelcholáistí and Gaeltacht post primary

schools and is open to schools all over the country.

This is the first time in the school’s history that they have reached the senior final and Irish teacher Cian O Naraigh praised the three young students for a brilliant display of debating while wishing them well in next week’s final.

“Emmet Byrne, John Marley and Daniel Ntmuese make up our Irish debating team and we are very proud of them for winning the regional

final and booking a lace in the All Ireland finals in the Lucan Spa Hotel.

“The main aim of Gael Linn’s schools’ debating competition is to promote the use of Irish in schools and among young people and to be fair to the lads they have embraced the challenge and produced an exceptionally high standard of debating through Irish.

“This is our first ever time reaching the senior debating All-Ireland finals but we did win the All-Ireland junior title

back in 2016 so we have a good recent history in this competition. Emmet and John were actually on that junior winning side so they will be hoping to make it a magnificent double by winning the senior title as well,” explained Cian.

“The topic of the debate in the regional final was “Mass Media in Ireland give us an accurate representation of what is happening in the world today” and we were debating in favour of that,” explained Cian.

Breathnach pays tribute to Pearse Lyons on his sad passing

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth and East Meath Declan Breathnach has paid tribute to Pearse Lyons on his untimely death in Kentucky.

“Pearse was a true entrepreneur who had real vision. After building a career in the brewing industry, he developed a specialised yeast-based technology and saw the potential in using this innovative product in plant and animal nutrition. His business Alltech went on to become an extremely successful Irish-US company, employing more than 5,000 staff, and having its European Headquarters in Dunboyne.

“More recently he developed the Pearse Lyons Distillery on Dublin’s James Street, now a major tourist attraction. “The seeds of that entrepreneurial spirit were sown in his teens.

While still studying at the Marist School in Dundalk, he had a part-

time job at the local Bingo Hall, which included clearing up at the end of each night.

“In those days, in true recycling style, you could return mineral bottles to the retailer for a small sum of money. He gathered up bottles left behind after the bingo and made a profit by returning them to the shop. However, he was clever enough to leave some of the bottles behind for the cleaners, thus sharing the spoils.

“Pearse always had a grá for Dundalk, and while I was Chairman of Louth County Council we welcomed a visiting delegation from Pikeville, Kentucky for St. Patrick’s Day, and from then on Dundalk has retained a link with Pikeville. “He was a truly innovative man and will be sorely missed. I send condolences to his wife Deirdre, daughter Aoife and son Mark. Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

Finian’s Rainbow at DkIT DkIT’s Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music will present an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Finian’s Rainbow on Thursday March 15 at 7pm in the MacAnna Theatre on campus.

Schools mark World Book Day

Local primary school pupils brought their favourite book characters to life last Friday as both students and teachers celebrated ‘World Book Day’.

From Lisa Simpson to The Cat in the Hat, characters and authors were brought to life in all classrooms and according to the St Nicholas’ Primary School principal Susan Reyburn the day was a great success.

“Everyone dressed as a character from their fa-

vourite book from junior infants to sixth class. We had a broad range of characters represented including princesses, Harry Potter, Pokemon characters, minions and many more.

The most popular authors on the day were JK Rowling and David Walliams.

Our teachers gave pupils time to read their favourite books and share them with friends. World Book Day is important to us as it allows us to spend more time reading books that interest us,” explained Susan.

got into the spirit of World Book Day with a lot going on in the classrooms to mark the occasion. School principal Patricia McKeever is a keen supporter of World Book Day stating that ‘a love of reading is one of life’s greatest gifts’.

“World Book Day is a real celebration in CBS. The younger children dress up as their favourite book characters and many classes make a trip to the book shop to claim their free World Book Day book using their book token.

“The older classes read

stories to the younger children and the teachers really focus on reading for pleasure, learning more about authors and encouraging pupils to write book reviews or do a ‘show and tell’ on a book they have read.

“This year we promoted the ‘share a story’ idea to get everyone reading for at least 10 minutes everyday as this has proven to make a big difference. The suspension of pay parking fines is estimated to cost €300,000 and councillors are eager to find out how this shortfall will be made up.

Where exactly that €300,000 will come from is the question on many councillors lips this week with many saying they are eager to find out more details from Joan Martin at the next Louth County Council meeting.

Sinn Fein counsellor Tomás Sharkey accused Louth County

Council of suffering from a ‘heavy trust deficit’ and questioned their assertion that the Dundalk bye-laws are legally sound.

“Nothing is water tight anymore,” insisted Tomás. “All and any Bye Law is open for challenge through proper channels. The recent initiative has put a lot of things in doubt. Parking bye laws and chargers have been in operation since 2002 in Drogheda. It appears the paperwork doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Our Council suffers from a heavy trust deficit.”

“The Chief Executive states that she has found the resources to offset a €300,000 shortfall. She has not shared the details. Either she intends to raise charges elsewhere, cut costs and services or has an

income source that was not in the 2018 Budget document. Either way, the budgetary process in Louth is a sham,” he concluded.

Tomás’s party colleague Antoin Watters was also eager to find out where the €300,000 will be sourced to make up this deficit.

Independent counsellor Maeve Yore echoed those sentiments asking how the €300,000 could be found so easily considering the constant message from Louth County Council that finances are tight.

“This will have a negative impact on services in our county and I personally cannot see where €300,000 is going to be ‘clawed back’ from - every budget workshop and meeting we have we are told how tight our finances are,” she stated.

Fianna Fail councillor Conor Keelan was also looking for clarification with regards to where these funds will come from.

“We have been told that the Executive had no more funds at their disposal. Accordingly, it is interesting to hear that the CE has now identified €300,000 she can cut which will not impact on services at Budget time. This is something I want clarification on,” stated Conor.

Fine Gael’s Maria Doyle also stated that she was eagerly looking forward to hearing from the Louth County Council Chief Executive at the monthly meeting on March 26 where she expected to get more clarity on this issue. Those sentiments were echoed by Sinn Fein

councillor Ruairi O’Murchu.

“Joan Martin stated absolutely clearly during the budget discussions that there was no room for manoeuvre as regards finances and this added to the council’s difficulties in having the budget ratified. It is very strange that €300,000 can now be found for the pay-parking situation in Drogheda,” he noted.

Joan Martin stated that she would provide answers at the next council meeting.

“I have been able to identify a number of sources to meet the sum involved and consequently hope to be able to avoid any cuts to the 2018 Budget. My proposals on how to deal with this particular matter will be detailed at the next meeting of Louth County Council.’

Doubts remain over distillery warehouse

John Teeling, chairman of the Great Northern Distillery, has expressed doubts regarding planning permission being granted to his proposed 111-acre warehouse facility in Kilcurry.

The Great Northern Distillery started producing whiskey in Dundalk in 2015 and immediately began looking for a site to build warehouses to mature the whiskey. The group eventually bought a site in Kilcurry on land behind St Brigid’s Church and lodged an application for the development of a whiskey warehouse facility consisting of thirteen maturation warehouses and ancillary building structures on a 111-acre site.

However, many local residents in Kilcurry expressed their concerns about the project and set up a group to fight against the proposed warehouses being built. Speaking to the Dundalk Leader last October John Gartland, a member of the ‘Kilcurry Concerned Residents Group’ expressed his reservations with regards to the GND’s plans.

“We are not against the Great Northern Distillery or industry and we think it’s great that they are providing employment in the town but we have to look after our community and we don’t think this is in the best interests of Kilcurry. We have meetings with the Great Northern Distillery and to their credit they have listened to our concerns and made modifications but ultimately we feel the whole project contravenes Louth County Council’s county plan and we can’t understand how this got

approved.

“At the meeting we will tell people who attend how to lodge an official appeal to the council and we are hoping we can stop these warehouses being built,” stated John.

The development eventually attracted 40 objections and late last year the planning application was put on hold as Louth County Council wrote to the Great Northern Distillery seeking further information on the group’s plans.

There were 23 requests for information in total given to the Great Northern Distillery and the group were given six months to respond. According to the GND’s managing director David Hynes those requests have now been answered and they are waiting on a decision from Louth County Council.

“The planning process in Ireland is quite rigorous and as part of that process Louth County Council sent us a Request for Further Information (RFI) in late November. We are working through the process and our responses to the RFI are being submitted currently. We feel that we have dealt with the concerns and questions raised and await the decision of the council,” stated David.

Speaking last week John Teeling, chairman of GND expressed his doubts as to whether the project would be given the go-ahead.

“It’s a lot like data centres,” he says.

“If there were a couple of hundred jobs it’d be easier, but a data centre and a whiskey warehouse don’t have many jobs.”

Fantastic reaction to release of Blackrock tourist guide

The Blackrock Tourism and Development Group have spoke of their delight at the reaction to their recently released tourism guide and walking map.

The map was launched last month with the aim to showcase all that Blackrock has to offer and entice tourists to come and visit what many consider to be one of the most beautiful villages in the country.

The Blackrock Tourism and Development Group was set up in 2016

by Blackrock natives Aine Corcoran, Conor Hughes, Jason McGee and Elaine Cosgrove who all own businesses in the village. The aim of the group is to highlight all that is beautiful in the village as well as promote and improve Blackrock as a tourist destination. According to Aine Corcoran the group was formed to try and increase recognition both nationally and internationally of Blackrock as a viable tourist destination.

“As a business owner in Blackrock I often get people coming into the shop from out of town who always remark on what a beautiful village Blackrock is. We do get a lot of people from outside the area visiting us but unfortunately there wasn’t anything available to tell them what they could do while in the village. Even within our own county, Blackrock is never really mentioned as a tourist destination so we felt we needed to change that,” explained Aine.

“With that in mind myself, Conor Hughes, Jason McGee and Elaine Cosgrove got together to form the Blackrock Tourism and Development Group. One of our first major projects was to develop and publish a tourist guide and walking map to act as a visitor’s guide to the village as well as detailing two walking routes for tourists while in the area.

“There are twelve points of interest on the map with a brief write up of each one. We have distributed these maps

in tourist offices all over the country and we believe our guide stands out among other tourist guides which can be slightly generic,” stated Aine.

The group will also look to expand on the village’s social events to attract visitors to the area. They have already organised a hugely successful film festival in the village and are currently hard at work putting the finishing touches to the forthcoming St Patrick’s Day Parade.

Gonnelly signs strike to go top despite O’Connor’s heroics Week 6 of the Dundalk snooker league was back in full swing after Storm Emma put paid to last week’s set of fixtures.

In the evenings opening encounter ‘Gonnelly Signs’ were pitted against ‘The Embassy’ with Mark Laverty (Gonnelly Signs) taking on the experienced Mickey Ralph (Embassy). The match saw Mark produce what could only be described as a solid display in a very well deserved victory over Ralph with Laverty’s constant small but effective breaks proving decisive as ‘Gonnelly Signs’ went 1-0 up.

In the second match of the evening Davey Moran representing ‘The Embassy’ tried his best to restore parity as he took on Stephen McBride from ‘Gonnelly Signs’. Moran raced into a 40point lead in what proved to be a high scoring encounter but the dogged McBride came from be-

hind to win the frame on the pink and move ‘Gonnelly Signs’ into a commanding 2-0 advantage.

The third frame looked to be going ‘Gonnelly Signs’ way as well with David J McArdle racing into a 55-0 lead over Dominic O’Connor.

However, a missed red to the middle gave Dominic a decent chance and he almost took full advantage as he made a fantastic 48 break before missing the last green. That missed green ensured David held a 55 to 48 advantage with five balls left on the table resulting in a tense finish to the frame.

The advantage swung back towards O’Connor when McArdle made a mistake and fouled the black while trying to play safe which meant the frame was all square with both players on 55 points.

Dominic was the first man to have a decent crack at the green

and he didn’t let his second chance pass him by as he cleared to the pink to pull ‘The Embassy’ back in the match.

The scoreboard had ‘Gonnelly Signs’ leading 2-1 going into the doubles with Aaron Callan and Mickey Kelly up against ‘The Embassy’ pairing of Mickey Ralph and Gerry Rogers to decide the result of the match.

A very tight frame saw Callan and Kelly secure victory with Callan potting a superb final pink to give Gonnelly signs the win on a scoreline of 3-1.

The second match of the evening saw ‘Cuskens Ltd’ face off against ‘Mallon Property’ for what turned out to be the only draw of the night.

The match opened up with Keith Morris of ‘Cuskens Ltd’ taking on Brendan O’Hanlon of ‘Mallon Property’ and it was fine

snooker by O’Hanlon that saw Mallon Property’ open up a 1-0 lead. Brendan’s brother Stephen was hoping to follow suit in the next as he took on Cusken’s Paddy Hayes.

However, Hayes played arguably his best snooker of the season to level proceedings at 1-1.

Tiernan Mallon restored ‘Mallon Property’s’ lead in the next beating James Coburn to make it 2.1 going into the doubles. Paddy Hayes and James Coburn took on ‘Mallon Property’s’ Patrick McArdle and Anthony Fee with Hayes and Coburn sealing the frame to leave the match ending all square at 2-2.

The final match of the evening saw ‘Natures Water’ take on ‘Charlie Chaplins’ and the consistent Alan Thompson was once again at his brilliant best for Natures Water as he opened up a 1-0 lead over ‘Charlie Chaplins’ by beating Glen

Justin McArdle who has played well all year restored parity for ‘Chaplins’ by beating Ken Byrne in a tense frame which was eventually decided on the black.

Joe McEneaney restored ‘Natures Water’ advantage by beating Maddy Hoey in fine style to ensure there was all to play for in the evening’s final doubles match.

Alan Thompson and Tomas Geroc from ‘Natures Water’ took on ‘Chaplin’s’ Patsy Muckian and Glen Duffy to determine whether ‘Nature’s Water’ would take all the points or if Chaplain’s could salvage a draw.

In a tight frame it was Thompson’s nerve that held together as he and his partner Geroc recorded the win to leave the final scoreline reading 3-1 to Natures Water.

This was the first of four regional finals in this year’s Irish Restaurant Awards to take place with the Knightsbrook Hotel in Trim the hosts for the popular event.

Over 550 people attended the Leinster Regional Final on Wednesday evening where the

The research team, based in Dundalk are looking to recruit 60 local people who are aged over 65 and who have been diagnosed with two or more of the following chronic conditions: diabetes, chronic obstructive

pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema or chronic bronchitis, heart failure or chronic heart disease (angina, hypertension, atherosclerosis, arrhythmia) to participate in the trial.

Up to five people in

the care network supporting the older person (e.g. family member, informal carer and healthcare professionals) can also participate in the trial.

Hearing aids for Arts Centre

An Táin Arts Centre took delivery last week of eight personal hearing aid devices that will make the events at the centre more accessible to people who are hard of hearing.

The devices were funded by Louth Leader Partnership and director of An Táin Arts Centre, Paul Hayes said it was great to welcome users from Deafhear Dundalk to the Centre to explain to them how these devices work.

“A small amplifying unit is plugged into our sound system, each user then gets one receiver which they tune into their hearing aid. We explored many options to make our numerous spaces more accessible to people who are hard of hearing including restoring the hearing loop system in the main theatre, but due to the size of the space we couldn’t reach every seat. I believe this new system is the best option for us and our audience.”

Sinn Féin TD for Louth and East Meath Gerry Adams has described the “significant increase in the number of adults who are homeless in Louth and the North East as a source of deep concern.

Teachta Adams was commenting on the January 2018 figures from the Department of Housing Planning and Local Government which were released this week.

“One year ago in January 2017, there were 121 adults accessing local authority emergency accommodation in the North East. Of those 117 were in Louth, one in Monaghan and three in Cavan.

“The figures for January 2018 show a dramatic increase. There are now 155 adults accessing

emergency accommodation. Of these, 147 are in Louth, five in Monaghan, and three in Cavan.

“There has also been a substantial increase in the number of dependents in homelessness in the North East. In January 2017, there were 16 families, six of whom were single parents and 24 dependents (children) in emergency accommodation.

One year later, the numbers have surged. There are now 52 families homeless, of whom 31 are single parents, and a total of 101 dependents (children).

“As we face into a severe weather situation, it is important that we look beyond the statistics and see the men and women and children, who are affected.

A year later those numbers have jumped to 5837 adults and 3,267 children. That means 9,104 people are homeless which is an increase of 30% since January 2017,” added Mr Adams.

“Action is needed, for example, to confront landlords issuing vacant possession notices to quit when selling their property.

A greater effort is required to purchase turnkey homes, not for sale on the open market, to get families out of emergency accommodation.

“Without a fundamental change in government housing policy, the upward trend of the housing crisis is likely to continue,” he concluded.

Bill McCarthy was the winner of Sunday’s Singles Stableford when he shot a superb score of 36pts to win the 14 hole competition on countback from Mark Browne (22).

On a day of red-hot scoring from many of the club’s seasoned campaigners, the 28 handicapper produced a round that included a four-point birdie two at the ninth, four three point pars and four three point bogeys.

Browne finished second with George Rogers (19) in third place on 35pts. The Category Prizes went to Jim Dwyer (9), Brian Ward (15) and Sean Ward (18) while Billy Cairns (6) returned the day’s best gross score of 27pts.

Sunday’s competition also marked the commencement of the Winter League. This will be played over the next four weeks with one score counting in week one, two on week two

CCPC Report on Personal Contract Plans welcomed by SIMI

Alan Nolan Director General of the Society of Irish Motor Industry commented "SIMI welcomes the release of Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) Personal Contract Plan (PCP) Report.

This is a very well researched and detailed piece of work which we will want to take some time to read through carefully. Many of our members would have contributed to this study, and the Report provides much needed consumer insight into what is an increasingly popular option in car financing. The Report confirms that Personal Contract Plans (PCPs) have worked well for both consumers and the Motor Industry and that overall, consumers experience of PCPs tended to be very positive. The Amárach research, contained in the Report, very clearly underlines that consumers understand the product; they felt that the salesperson had gone through the terms in a satisfactory detail and thought that they had been afforded the opportunity to get as much information as they

wanted. Most thought that any gaps in their knowledge could be put down to their lack of interest rather than any slight of hand by the seller.

SIMI supports the CCPC in this project and we will work with the CCPC in seeking to improve areas highlighted in the recommendations, such as working to help consumers to have an even deeper understanding of PCP finance, through ongoing public awareness initiatives to ensure that

consumers are sufficiently well informed to judge whether the product is suitable for their needs and understand any potential risks, even in cases where these may be very limited. Similarly the Industry would wish to support the CCPC in relation to the development and roll-out of the proposal for a process of affordability checks.

As highlighted in the Report, car dealers have a strong incentive to build trust with their customers and to ensure that guaranteed future values are realistic enough to ensure that the customer will be well placed to fund their next purchase.

Clearly it is in the interest of our Industry that the consumer experience of PCPs continues to be positive. ŠKODA AUTO ACHIEVES BEST FEBRUARY RESULT IN ITS HISTORY ŠKODA AUTO delivered 92,800 vehicles to customers worldwide in February, an increase of 14.3% compared to the same period of the previous year (February 2017: 81,200 vehicles), and the best February result in its 123-year history. The Czech carmaker posted particularly strong growth in China (+30.6%), Germany (+17.6%), Russia (+38.6%) and Turkey (+79.3%). In addition to the international bestseller OCTAVIA, the two SUV models KAROQ and KODIAQ also made significant contributions to the strong overall result. “ŠKODA AUTO’s growth continues with another record month. Demand for the ŠKODA KAROQ and KODIAQ continues to increase, making our young SUV range a key pillar of our success,” says Alain Favey, ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “Our new, attractive models will provide us with fresh growth impetus, setting the stage for a successful future.”

At the International Motor Show 2018 in Geneva, the car manufacturer from Mladá Boleslav is presenting the ŠKODA VISION X study, and the comprehensively revised ŠKODA FABIA also celebrates its world premiere. With the ŠKODA KODIAQ Laurin & Klement, the top model in the popular SUV series is presented to the public for the first time.

In Western Europe, ŠKODA AUTO achieved 38,300 deliveries in February, an increase of 10.2% over the same month of the previous year (February 2017: 34,800 vehicles). Deliveries in the strongest European single market, Germany, increased to 14,800 vehicles (February 2017: 12,600 vehicles; +17.6%). ŠKODA AUTO also achieved double-digit growth rates in Italy (2,600 vehicles; +18.6%), France (2,300 vehicles; +20.7%), Austria (2,300; +18.4%), the Netherlands (1,400 vehicles; +19.9%), Norway (700 vehicles; +30.2%) and Greece (200 vehicles; +43.3%).
