A Blackrock man who was accused of stabbing a 93-year-old neighbour was refused bail when he appeared at Dublin District Court on Monday.

James Reilly (30) of Gort Na Glaise in Blackrock, is charged with seriously assaulting the 93-year-old man at his home in Blackrock on August 10.

The defendant also faces charges in relation to handling a stolen pub. lic services card and an iPhone case on the same date.

The court was told by Gda Michael Rochford that at around 3pm on Saturday the pensioner

was in his garden in Blackrock when he was approached by a man whom he didn’t know.

Gda Rochford stated that after a brief exchange of words the pensioner was attacked, and it is alleged that the victim was stabbed three times in the abdomen and once in the hand.

The 93-year-old managed to get to the back door of the house where he and his wife prevented the accused man from gaining entry.

Accused man is remanded in custody A Blackrock man who was accused of stabbing a 93-year-old neighbour was refused bail when he appeared at Dublin District Court.

James Reilly (30) of Gort Na Glaise in Blackrock, is charged with seriously assaulting the 93-year-old man at his home in Blackrock on August 10.

Judge Kelly said there was no doubt this was a “very serious offence” and in refusing bail she re-

manded Mr Reilly in custody to appear before Cloverhill court on Friday.

Local TD, Declan Breathnach, who is a friend of the victim, expressed his shock at the incident and sent his best wishes to the family.

“My thoughts are with the victim of this crime in Blackrock, his wife and their great family and I hope he makes a speedy recovery. I look forward to meeting the family when he is fit for visitors,” he stated.

Dromiskin girl Aimee Woods has raised a magnificent total of €11000 for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Aimee is the daughter of Sean Woods a wellknown saloon driver and racing team owner and she has followed in her father’s footsteps by racing competively around Ireland for the last ten years. By day she is a social worker but she can often be found in Mondello Park each weekend taking part in her role as a racing instructor.

Aimee has seen at first hand the great work that the IMNDA do following her father getting diagnosed with the disease back in February and wanted to give back something to the organisation. With that in mind Aimee organ-

ised a ‘Fiestaval Race Meeting’ which also included a number of fundraisers across the weekend including an auction. According to the Dromiskin native the whole weekend was a huge success with much needed funds being raised for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

“The whole idea for the weekend was to raise awareness for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and I think we managed to do that. A lot of people don’t know too much about the disease until it comes knocking at your door and unfortunately it came to us in February when Dad was diag-

nosed. Since that diagnosis the IMNDA have been a brilliant help to our family and I just wanted to give something back to them.

“We organised all the fundraising elements around the weekend’s racing which was called Fiestaval. We had a team race featuring a car from the Fiesta Zetec

championship and a car from the slower Fiesta ST championships and the teams were made up of the two classes who raced together for the final race of the weekend with the win going to the team with the best combined result.

“Both myself and my dad actually came pretty close to winning

our races which would have been amazing. I was leading the whole way around until I got boxed in and pushed out with four laps to go which meant I fell back to seventh. Dad was also winning his race but was forced to retire with a puncture late on. He really enjoyed it though and we all had a great time,” stated Aimee.

“Late on we had the auction and I want to thank everybody in Dundalk for their generous donations which helped to raise €7000 alone. We also had a BBQ which my mother organised and she was helped by the generosity of people around town who donated food and spot prizes. We’re thrilled with how the weekend went and we sincerely want to thank everybody for making it such a big success,” added Aimee.

Adams meets Minister on insurance threat to Louth jobs Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams TD and Cllr Ruairí Ó Murchú met with the Minister of State Michael D’Arcy TD last week to discuss the current crisis facing many leisure-based companies whose insurance cover has been withdrawn.

Representatives of local Louth company Pelican Promotions, Mandy Fee and Shane McBride, also attended the meeting.

The Sinn Féin representatives put to the Minister their view that the Government should tell insurers that if they don’t act, the State will, and that the State must be ready to provide guarantees or other assistance to certain sectors help weather this storm.

They also suggested that the Government must look to other solutions to this type of market failure through a State company or a genuine EU wide insurance market.

Speaking after the meeting Gerry Adams said that the Sinn Féin representatives raised two specific issues with the minister.

“Firstly, we asked the minister what plans the Government has to protect jobs threatened by the decision of British insurers to withdraw from the Irish market.

Some estimates put the number of jobs at risk across the state as high as 4,500.

DkIT expands Education Partnerships with european Film School Network

The School of Informatics & Creative Arts at DkIT has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with leading European film education consortium, the Film School Network.

The MOU will see DkIT develop stronger links with education partners across Europe in the area of film and television production.

The Film School Network (FSN), is a networking project which aims to promote the exchange of ideas and practices surrounding Film Education between film schools all around the world.

The main purpose of the project is that of creating a wider, transnational knowledge around filmmaking, in order to better train the future members of the industry.

Both lecturers have extensive experience in the film industry and have a particular focus on practice-led teaching. The overall theme for the conference is “Film teaching and the future of Cinema: ethic, consciousness, audi-

ences and markets”.

DkIT will also screen two short films at the FSN Congress, ‘Sky’s the Limit’ and ‘Ghost Estate’. The films were produced by third year students at the Institute and been well received on the festival circuit to date.

Irish Cancer Society need volunteer drivers

The Irish Cancer Society has put an urgent call out for volunteers throughout Louth for its Volunteer Driver Service, in order to cope with increasing demand on the free transport service.

The Society has seen a nationwide increase of almost one third in the first few months of this year, with a massive increase of 200% in patient bookings in Louth.

Gail Flinter, Patient Travel and Financial Support Manager with the Irish Cancer Society said there has been a huge increase in patient referrals across the country, as well in the Louth area.

“To cope with this demand, it is essential that we recruit more volunteers to transport patients

to their chemotherapy appointments. We are particularly looking for volunteers who are willing to drive patients to their treatments in our partner Dublin hospitals.

“We have a fantastic network of volunteer drivers around the country who receive ongoing training and support. I would appeal to anyone in the Louth areas who has at least three flexible weekdays a month, to get in touch. You will become part of a remarkable team of volunteers, without whom this valuable service simply could not function,” stated Gail.

Council opens new public park

The official opening of the new park

The children of Dundalk are set to enjoy the benefits of a new park that was officially opened on Tuesday of last week.

Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Liam Reilly, along with the Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal Council, Cllr John McGahon officially opened the new public park adjacent to Colaiste Chu Chulainn. The new park has been named “Clarke’s Forest Park” as part of the lands on which the park and Colaiste Chu Chulainn are located were formerly owned by shoe fac-

tory and a forest was there for many years.

Cllr Liam Reilly said he was delighted to officially open this park which is designed and constructed to the highest standards.

“It will provide great leisure and fun activities for the young and the young at heart, while its central location is ideal and is so accessible from all parts of Dundalk,” he stated Chief Executive of Louth County Council, Joan Martin also welcomed the new facility.

lovely new park to the already wide range of outdoor parks and amenities available in Dundalk. The development of a park on this site has been an objective of councillors in Dundalk for many years so it’s a great day for the town.

The park measures 4000 sqm and was built in conjunction with Colaiste Chú Chulainn for Louth County Council. While

the park was provided as part of the construction contract for the adjoining school, with the co-operation of the Department of Education and Skills, it has been fully funded by Louth County Council.

The park features over 100m of linear walk between the entrance gates and contains a junior play area with soft surface, a fairy garden, outdoor gym equipment, park benches, raised apothecary planted beds, bulb planted area, hedges and shrubs which will mature over time under the care of the The official opening of the new park council’s parks department.

Long wait is over for Leaving Cert students Local students joined the thousands around the country in collecting their Leaving Certificate Results on Tuesday morning.

Following all the hard work over the last number of years and the stress of the exams, the students finally got to see the result of their efforts when the marks were revealed.

Once again it was a mix of joy and relief for most of those who gathered at the schools in the regions to collect their brown envelopes. As always there was some

disappointment and form others it was a case of waiting for the CAO offers to see find out what their next step is.

This year the wait for college offers has been shortened due to the High Court action taken by on student who successfully argued that the previous appeals process was unfair to students.

The High court found, that it was unfair to Rebecca Carter to miss out on a place in third level education because of the time taken to recheck her business paper which had been incor-

rectly tallied up.

The decision made last September, meant that Rebecca could secure her course and attend university as planned.

The changes implemented this year are a direct result of last year’s high court action, which will speed up the process and allow enough time for paper rechecks and corrections so that students don’t miss out on their third level places.

This year’s results were published one day earlier than previ-

ous years and the new process means that those who have applied for third-level courses through the CAO will receive offers tomorrow (Thursday), four days earlier than previousT t years.

The results of re-D checks will be sent top students in mid Sep-o tember, which is three weeks earlier than wasl P previously the case.

There was an increaseu of three percent of peo-b ple sitting the Leavingt Cert exam this year,w bringing the total to almost 59,000.

New boat for sub aqua club

A new Search & Recover boat was delivered Dundalk Sub Aqua Club at the weekend to which is a great addition to the club in supporting Search & Recovery operations nationwide.

This boat was funded partly by generous donations from the public through fundraising (mainly the annual bucket collection on 31st Dec), the Sports Capital Programme and DSAC club funds.

DSAC is an active diving club in existence since 2001 and are affiliated with the Irish Underwater Council (Comairle Fo Thuinn) and have a current membership of 48 divers. They have a vast wealth of experience and qualifications from trainee divers up to dive instructors.

The club als has an active Search and Recovery unit supporting S&R requirements across the island of

Ireland as well as divers who are qualified as Seasearch Observers.

Potential new members are invited to Try a dive in Aura in September each year, followed by a pool training program through the winter.

Outdated voter registration system should be moved online—Breathnach Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has called for online voter registration to be brought in to Counties Louth and Meath.

“To be added to the register, people must still complete the paper process and have their form stamped in a Garda station before returning it to their local authority.

It’s quite a drawn-out and outdated system. I know of people who wanted to register to vote in the recent Local & European Elections but didn’t have enough time to complete the process before the deadline.”

“The County Council is responsible for compiling the Register of Electors every year and I know Louth County Council officials

are currently completing their intensive door-to-door campaign.

However, it would be much more cost and time efficient if individuals could complete the entire process themselves without having to leave their home.”

“The four Dublin Local Authorities had a very successful pilot online registration scheme this year, which allowed people to register to vote or amend details on Voter.ie. There’s no reason why this can’t be rolled out across the whole country before the next General Election. We want to increase turnout and make it easier for people to register to vote, rather than the current time-consuming exercise.

New Frontiers supports local entrepreneurs

The official launch of Phase 2 of the New Frontiers Entrepreneur Development Programme took place recently at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT).

New Frontiers is Enterprise Ireland’s Entrepreneur Development Programme for early stage startups and is delivered at a local level by the Regional Development Centre, DkIT, Dundalk in conjunction with Invent at Dublin City University (DCU). Phase 2 brings together 11 ambitious start-ups from Louth, Cavan, Monaghan, Meath and North Dublin with a single vision - to grow and scale a business that will trade internationally.

Over the next six months the businesses, who operate in a wide

range of sectors, will receive intensive business training, financial support and mentorship from Enterprise Ireland as well as having full access to the research facilities and expert panels of both DkIT and DCU Invent.

The 11 start ups recruited had to undergo a rigorous selection process to secure their place on the programme. The volume of applications received demonstrates that entrepreneurship is still very much a career path for many in the North East.

Dundalk Tidy Towns have called on the help of Louth County Council following the discovery of a huge pile of rubbish which they described as a health hazard. Helen Byrne and Martin Holland from Dundalk Tidy Towns were doing their regular clean up around the town when they ventured over to the alleyway behind the Clan na Gael GAA club grounds which is a very popular walkway used by people as a shortcut to IceHouse Hill.

When the duo reached the alleyway they were shocked to find piles upon piles of rubbish including rotten food, dirty nappies, broken glass and empty beer cans. They tried to put some of the rubbish into bags but the stench and the sight of rats inside the fence saw them leave the scene and contact the council for help.

According to Helen, who is chairperson of Dundalk Tidy Towns, the site is a complete health hazard and she urged Louth County Council to put in some sort of long erm preventative measure to stop rub-

“We are not putting up these pictures to take a swipe at Louth County Council.

We actually work with them a lot of the time and they do some good work. But when we came across this mess we knew we needed help and we contacted the local authority to try and get something done about it. That alleyway is regularly used by people and it has become very dangerous.

The amount of broken glass, dirty nappies and rats was

unbelievable and if anybody was to fall there’s no knowing what they might catch,” stated Helen “We have no idea how long this has been building up but according to Louth County Council the area is cleaned on a weekly basis. If that is the case then something needs to be done as it beggars belief that this amount of rubbish could be dumped in such a short period. You’ve also got the railway line running behind it and it is not a good look for the town when

you have a train full of people looking down and seeing such a build up of filth in behind the fence. I have been told that they have secured funding to seal the area but unfortunately these things take plenty of time what with the red tape they have to go through before anything is done,” she added.

“We are asking the council for help to combat littering but we are also urging communities around the town to speak up and contact the local authority if they see dump-

We were contacted just last week by residents in Mill St who wanted a bit of help tidying their community and we immediately agreed to get out to them next week to do a bit of work around the place.

DkIT prioritises green future with major wind turbine refurbishment

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has announced the completion of the €125,000 restoration of its iconic wind turbine. The 850kW turbine has been in operation since October 2005 and powers approximately one third of the campus’ total electricity consumption.

Extensive refurbishments have taken place over recent months, including the replacement of the turbine’s gearbox.

The recent upgrade is expected to secure an additional 10 years of operation for the turbine, resulting in the continuation of significant energy savings and carbon emission reductions for the Institute.

The turbine currently gener-

ates approximately €130,000 in financial benefits to the college per annum.

Speaking today, DkIT President, Michael Mulvey, said, “We are delighted to invest in our campus’ green future with the renovation of our wind turbine. The iconic turbine is emblematic of the ‘living-learning campus’ ethos at DkIT. In addition to providing important green energy and cost-saving contributions to our Institute, the turbine plays a key role in research at the Centre for Renewable Energy at DkIT (CREDIT) and teaching activities in the School of Engineering.

With a hub height of 60m

and a rotor diameter of 52m, the turbine of this size and power was a “world first” for an educational campus at the time of it installation.

Now a recognisable landmark in the North Leinster South Ulster region, the turbine has had a broad regional impact with regular site visits from a large number of primary and secondary schools, industry and interest groups. It has also been adopted by Dundalk Town Council as part of the logo for Dundalk.

Over the past 13 years, the DkIT turbine has consistently delivered between 1.3 and 1.6 million units (kWh) of electricity on an annual basis depend-

ing on winds in a given year.

Approximately 80% of the annual electricity generated by the turbine is consumed directly by the Institute which avoids electricity purchases from the grid at retail electricity rates.

The remaining 20% is exported to the grid. Exports arise when Institute demand is low such as on windy nights and weekends.

The typical lifespan of a wind turbine like that at DkIT is 20 years. In light of the recent refurbishment, the Institute’s turbine is expected to exceed this. Considerations for its future development are under examination by management at The wind turbine at DkIT the Institute.

MAD Couture fashion show raises money for charity Last Thursday night MAD Couture fashion show was held at the Spirit Store to help raise funds for the Dundalk branch of Rainbow Ireland.

The MAD Youth Theatre members-committee came up with the idea to explore the idea of costume-making to fill in the summer months with activities.

Louth’s entrants to this year’s Pride of Place competition have been announced.

Louth has been a consistent presence in the competition and has had a huge degree of success in recent years. The Gary Kelly Cancer Support Centre won the Community Wellbeing Initiative category in 2018 and the Maria Goretti Foundation was the winner of the Community Reaching Out category in 2017.

Joan Martin, Chief Executive of Louth County Council was delighted to announce the three entrants to represent the county in the “Pride of Place 2019” All Ireland Competition. Louth Village has been entered into the Population 300 – 1,000 category.

Carlingford has been entered into the Community Tourism Initiative category, while the Drogheda and District Support 4

Older People will take part in the Community Wellbeing Initiative category.

Community spirit is very much alive in Louth Village, which has been revitalised in recent years and has seen the opening of the new playground and the Community Hub. The village, which also boasts the Credit Union, St. Mochta’s GAA club and the Church of the Immaculate Conception, has seen a significant increase in population due to opening of new facilities and the great work being undertaken by the local community.

During the month of July she took part in a fundraising drive

by Women’s Aid called ‘Walk in July’. The idea of the fundraiser was to raise awareness and much needed funds for Women’s Aid by walking 50 miles.

“I ran the 50 miles in solidarity with those who need help to walk away from domestic violence in Ireland. I raised €950 which was down to the incredible generosity of people.

I’d like to thank all those who donated to this amazing charity,” she stated.

According to a Women’s Aid spokesperson over 1,500 women took part in the event resulting in the charity receiving

Cllr McGreehan stated that raising this amount of money nationally is truly fantastic.

“There are vulnerable women and children all across this country and I hope that this money will go in some way to give

those who are living with domestic abuse the courage and support they need to walk away from violence,” she said.

The funds raised by the ‘Walk for Women’ will help the organisation keep their 24hr National Freephone Helpline open. Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has criticised the proposed closing times for resurfacing works that are due to take place on the M1 Motorway between Drogheda and Dundalk over a tenweek period.

Speaking on the proposed closure, Cllr.

McGahon revealed that Louth County Council has given notice of its intention to close the M1 motorway from Junction 10 (Drogheda North, Navan) to Junction 18 (Dundalk South, Ballymascanlon) at night time over a 10 week period from September 9 to November 16 to facilitate the Celtic Roads Group to carry out pavement works.

“The proposed times of closure are between 7.30pm and 6.30am.

Fianna Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has called on Irish Water to give more regular and informative updates to customers who contact them during disruptions.

“The Boil Water Notice for the Tallanstown Public Water Supply has been in place since July 30 and there is still no indication of when this will Declan Breathnach be lifted.

“Irish Water directed people to ring their customer care line and visit their website for updates. Unfortunately, I along with many constituents, have been left disappointed by these services. The information on the website has not changed since the notice was put in place. The Irish Water customer care phone line has been unable to give any indication as to when the work may be completed.

“People are being left in the dark with no end in sight to the disruption. Irish Water need to change their communication system, perhaps compiling a database of customers served by each supply, which can be given daily updates on work being carried out during disruptions,” he added.

Dundalk’s cyclists had a good weekend on the open racing front.

The best of the results was in Lurgan where Dromin man Declan Rafferty claimed an impressive second place.

Rafferty was part of a three-man escape that went early on the first of three laps. The trio worked well together and in the sprint he claimed second place.

Meanwhile in Co. Meath Gavin McDermott was fifth place in the A4 race at the Collins Christie Memorial.

The course is flat and

extremely fast and it came down to a bunch gallop. McDermott has honed his skills sprinting in the Bike Station League and did come close to the win.

The Bike Station Summer Cycling League is almost at its conclusion, with just two rounds to go. Due to a backlog, two of the remaining three rounds, will finish atop of Flagstaff Mountain, which is undeniably the hardest finish on the calendar.

Busy times continue for Dundalk’s elite golfers It’s a busy time for Dundalk Golf Club’s elite golfers as they continue to represent the club with distinction across the world.

Caolan Rafferty faces the biggest test of his amateur career this week when he tees it up among the world’s elite at the American Amateur Championship which is being played at the world famous Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

The 26-year-old will start his bid to qualify for the 64 player matchplay stage at 6.12pm (Irish time) on Monday on Pinehurst’s famed No.2 course which has hosted more single golf championships than any other course in America and will stage the US Open in 2024 having last staged it in 2014.

His second round on Tuesday will be at 12.57pm on Pinehurst No.4 and he will play both rounds in the company of Americans Pierceson Coody and Ryan Burnett.

Rafferty flew out to America last Thursday in the company of British Amateur Champion James Sugure from Mallow and Australian Amateur Champion Conor Purcell from Portmarnock and admits having his Irish team-mates with him this week will be a

big help.

“We’re sharing a house and hopefully all of us will be here until the final day,” said Rafferty.

Caolan, who has already won the West of Ireland Championship this year, played in Arizona last December and hopes that experience will help him.

“It probably wasn’t the best time of the year for me to go over but it was a good experience because it is different and I hope it will help me this week.”

Rafferty’s big goal this year is to make the Britain and Ireland team for the Walker Cup in Royal Liverpool next month and with the ten-man team set to be named next week he knows that a good performance in Pinehurst will be a big help to his chances.

“I’ve just got to keep doing what I have been doing and hopefully it will be good enough to get me a place. But you never know what could happen,” he said.

Rafferty’s involvement in the American Amateur meant he missed the Irish Close Championship in Ballybunion where his club-mate, and Barton Shield partner, Eoin Murphy flew the flag for Dundalk with some distinction.

Josh recorded his best ever performance at a senior championship by reaching the quarter-finals where he lost 3&1 to Dun Laoghaire’s Alan Fahy.

After shooting rounds of 75 and 71 to qualify in 19th place on +4, Murphy beat William Small (Tandragee), Kevin Stack (Dungarvan) and Colm Campbell (Warrenpoint) in the matchplay rounds to reach the last eight.

It was a good week too for Josh Mackin as the Ulster Boys Champions played for Ireland in the Boys Home Internationals in Wales where they came within a whisker of

dethroning champions England.

Murphy formed a superb foursomes partnership with Royal Dublin’s Max Faulkner and the pair won all three of their matches against Scotland, Wales and England while in the singles Mackin gained half-a-point against Scotland, won his match against Wales and was agonisingly beaten by one hole by England’s Max Hopkins as Ireland lost 8-7 to the English.

A haul of four-and-a-half points out of a possible six was an excellent return and caps what has been a fine year to date for the 18-year-old.

Brendan Lawlor continues to blaze a trail for disability golf and this week he will tee it up against male and female professionals at the ISPS Handa World Invitational at Galgorm Castle. This is a tournament where men and women will compete at the same venue at the same time with the professionals sharing equal prize money.

“I believe this will be the first time a disability golfer will compete on the same stage over the same course as the professionals in a Challenge Tour event,” said Lawlor who is a member of Dundalk’s Senior Panel.

More must be done to help families with back to school costs Louth TD Gerry Adams has called on the Government to do more to help parents who are facing mounting stress due to the financial burden of Back to School costs.

Teachta Adams said that a report published last week by the charity Barnardos found that parents are “stressed out, overburdened and fed up” with the high cost of sending children to school.

“The report paints a stark picture of parents not paying bills or cutting back on other areas in order to meet these costs.

“This is supported by a recent survey from the Irish League of

Sean Moriarty (22) was the winner of Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition at Dundalk Golf Club with an impressive score of 42pts which just edged out Eddie Rocks (9) by one point.

Two pars on the final two holes proved vital in taking Moriarty past the in-form Rocks who had compiled an excellent 41pts off a nine handicap.

In all, Moriarty picked up three points at eight holes as he parred the third, eighth, 10th, 13th, 17th and 18th and took full advantage of having

two shots at the fourth and 11th which he bogeyed. His only one pointers came at the par five index three seventh where he had an eight and the par five 12th where he had a double bogey seven.

Teenager Zak Alderdice warmed up for next week’s Irish Boys U16 Championship in Donabate by taking Category 1 with 39pts and also recorded the day’s best gross score of 34pts.
