A weekly car boot sale in Carlingford which donated all proceeds from the stands to the Maria Goretti Foundation has been forced to close following complaints by a local resident to Louth County Council. Kevin Woods, who organised the car boot sale from his back garden on Ghan Road in Carlingford, said he was disappointed but not surprised that somebody contacted Louth County Council to get him shut down. “We really regret

that due to the intolerance of neighbours, we have been instructed by Louth Council to cease our weekly car boot market. All the proceeds from the stands were used as fundraising for the support of The Maria Goretti Foundation for unwell, happy, children, supported through fundraising by most in the community on a voluntary basis. It’s regrettable that so few, themselves blessed with a lot fewer struggles, can impact on the absolute needs of others,” stated Kevin. Continued on Page 2

Bessie feels the love on 100th birthday

Bessie Connors celebrated her 100th birthday last Tuesday and received over 300 cards from people all around the town to mark the occasion. Full story on page 2.

From page 1 “I was informed this week by Louth County Council that I must cease hosting the car boot sales immediately due to a complaint from somebody local with regards to the amount of traffic in the area on Sundays when they take place. They have been taking place for the past six weeks and we generally get 18 or 19 stands who pay €15-€20 for a patch with all that money going to the Maria Goretti Foundation. “I was disappointed but not surprised when I was issued

the notice to stop hosting the car boot sales by Louth County Council. Unfortunately, we live in an age of intolerant people that have nothing to do but give out and complain over the most trivial of matters. I actually think these people have gotten worse since COVID began and that they are out there going for walks looking for things to get outraged by. I am not blaming Louth County Council at all for this as they are just enforcing the rules but it is very disappointing that somebody felt the need

to make an official complaint about us,” stated Kevin. A statement from Louth County Council confirmed that complaints had been received in late May relating to parking issues, littering and traffic obstructions. “Under Part VIII of the Planning and Development Act (as amended) the Council is obliged to follow up on substantive written complaints of breaches of the planning code. Louth County Council’s Planning Enforcement Section received a number of complaints

in April and May 2021 in relation to a Motorhome park operating on Ghan Road and its impact on residential amenity on residents in Oyster Bay Court. “Further complaints were received in late May in relation to a weekly car boot sale running on Sundays causing obstruction of traffic, parking issues and general littering of the Ghan road area. The Council has contacted the landowner and outlined to them the steps required to regularise the situKevin Woods. ation,” read the statement.

Bessie feels the love on 100th birthday By Paul Byrne

Bessie Connors was feeling the love this week as she celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family from her support bubble. With COVID restrictions preventing Bessie’s family from organising a big party to celebrate her momentous birthday they instead called on the people of Dundalk to send a card to Bessie with the hope of getting 100 cards for the popular Muirhevnamór lady. In the end Bessie received almost 300 cards which left her staggered

by the kindness on show from the people in her town. According to family member Louise McFarland the last year and a half has been tough on Bessie given the fact she has had to cocoon and the family wanted to make sure her 100th birthday didn’t pass without doing something special for her. “Bessie was born on 6th July 1921 and has lived all her life in Dundalk. She started off in O Hanlon Park, moving to Hyde Park, Greenacres, St Clements park, and Muirhevenamor. She is fiercely independent and still lives in her own home. She’s as cute as a button and you’ll not get much past her! She left school at 14 and went straight to work in Rawsons for 30 odd years then a few other shoe factories around Dundalk before retiring from Weyenbergs,” explained Louise McFarland. “Bessie is my partner Michael Harvey’s Auntie, but she reared him and therefore effectively his mother and Nan to our son Mac and Michael’s two son’s Gary and Darren Harvey. “I came up with the idea of ‘100 cards for Bessie’ - one for every year of her life. The reason behind this, was because the past year and a half has been exceptionally tough on everyone, but especially Bessie. She has been shielding alone and not been able to get out to her groups and see the people she usually would. But she’s made of stern stuff and not moaned once. I thought if I could get 100 cards sent it would let her know that al-

though people hadn’t been able to visit they certainly hadn’t forgotten about her. “We had not been able to get over from the UK and would usually visit several times a year. The idea proved to be a huge success, the community in Dundalk were brilliant, they all rallied round and cards came flying in from all over the world and still are. “When we left Ireland this week, we were a fraction off 300! People were so kind, they’d sent flowers, balloons, and gifts. There were hand-crafted cards from children it was just amazing. We really Bessie Connors, who is 100 years young. can’t thank everyone enough and of course to Colin Fee who allowed his garage The Maxol on the Castletown Road to be a drop off point. “Bessie was totally overwhelmed. I don’t think she could quite believe that all these people knew it was her birthday and wanted to wish her well. She was staggered by people’s kindness and it totally made her day. The day of her birthday was spent celebrating with her family and close friends who had been in her support bubble. It wasn’t quite the ‘party’ we had planned for such a monumental occasion but given the COVID restrictions, we made the best of it whilst adhering to all guidelines. There was also a special Mass at the Holy Family Church in Muirhevenamor, where they also presented her with a huge bouquet of flowers which topped off a great day for Bessie,” stated Louise.

Post office network needs Government intervention now Peter Fitzpatrick today again called on Government to intervene and support the post office network before it collapses. Peter Fitzpatrick along with Regional Group Members are awaiting a response from Minister Eamon Ryan on this urgent issue. The Minister had committed to report back to the Dáil within six months of their Private Member’s Motion on the post office network last October. Fitzpatrick is calling on the Government to step up to their commitments to deliver new business to prevent the collapse of the post office network. The Regional Group has continuously pointed out that An Post requires support in the roll out of new services, and the delivery of its strategic plan to ensure its financial viability. In the meantime, An Post needs immediate intervention

Peter Fitzpatrick, TD. until a long-term strategy is put in place to ensure its survival. The Post Office network is about to collapse, and branch closures are inevitable without immediate support from Government. They face a major challenge due to the significant reduction in payment rates amounting to an average fall of approximately 20%. The average losses of €19,181 are forecast per Post Office per annum which will impact all of-

fices small, large, urban, and rural. More than 500 of An Post’s 939 post offices nationwide are situated in locations without a mainstream bank presence. An Post is one of the last Government agents existing in our communities and the Government committed to a sustainable nationwide post office network as a key component of the economic and social infrastructure in both rural and urban areas. Peter Fitzpatrick believes there must be direct intervention by the Government to develop new State services for the post office network, in line with the previous commitment given to use the network as the offline option for all government services, and to pay a fee of €17 million for this service, as outlined in the Grant Thornton report. The Regional Group

highlight that the strategy adopted by this Government is to allow Post offices to close before intervening and to support only the most viable, thereby ignoring the fact that post offices are a necessity for those living in regional Ireland. There is a socio-economic benefit for our communities that cannot easily be measured. The community benefit of having this service available locally is about much more than the Post Office itself. Government needs to recognise and connect these factors. The challenges facing village and town economies, and their Post Offices, will need an innovative response from Government. Establishing alternative funding options to maintain a sustainable future for the post office network and for postmasters is now essential to prevent their collapse.

Christopher hoping to enhance college life for students THE new student union president of Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has said he is planning to take a “proactive approach” to help students feel engaged with college life. Christopher “Chacho” O’Neill told the Dundalk Leader he and his team have started their first full week back in office. “Obviously last year was a bit of a weird experience. I was Vice President and in my second term. Then we moved to an online college culture,” said Christopher. “It was a very different experience organising online events. As the guidelines start to ease, we hope it will be a different experience this year.” The Students’ Union is planning a re-orientation experience this year for the second years who missed out on campus life last year. “Last year’s first years were only allowed to be on campus four hours per week and that became less as restrictions got tougher,” he said. “We are planning a two-day event and have some things organised for outdoors because

Katie Ryan (SU Vice President of Welfare and Equality), Christopher (Chacho) O’Neill (SU President), Caitlin Connor (SU Vice President for Student Engagement) they never got that allcampus college experience.” Christopher said that he got a lot of phone calls last year from students who said they didn’t feel like they were in college. “We have to make sure that students feel engaged with college life and we have to make

up for lost time last year and give them the best possible experience this year,” he said. “We are elected representatives and we have to enhance the college experience as much as possible for the next academic year.” Christopher added: “The whole situation of TU status is lingering

for DkIT. If students and lecturers come together to help achieve TU status for DkIT, it will not only help the college, it will help the town too. “It’s definitely something I’d be passionate about and it’s something I’ll always fight for. I want to make sure that the student voice won’t be left behind.”

A new government plan which aims to get 75,000 long term unemployed people back into employment was launched in Dundalk on Monday. An Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys, Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris, and Minister of State with responsibility for Business and Employment Damien English all attended the launch which was held in the Advanced Manufacturing & Technology Training Centre of Excellence in Xerox Technology Park on the Dublin Road. . The Pathways to Work 2021-2025 strategy will also seek to reduce youth unemployment rate to 12.5% as well as providing 50,000 further education and training plac-

es. Government say they will also deliver 10,000 apprentices and ring-fence 1,000 places on community employment and Tús programmes. A training support grant worth €1,000 will also be provided to jobseekers to avail of short-term, accredited training programmes, such as a Safe Pass course. The strategy will aim to provide recruitment subsidies of between €7,500 and €10,000 for employers who take people off the live register. A new work experience placement scheme is also to be rolled out, which will see 10,000 jobseekers of all ages who have been unemployed for more than six months paid €306 per week as part of their placement. The scheme is a vol- An Taoiseach Micheál Martin. untary, opt-in scheme for those wishing to gain work experience by working 30 hours per week while receiving their social welfare payment. According to An Taoiseach the new plans main ambition is to exceed pre-COVID crisis employment levels. “Last month, Gov-

ernment launched our Economic Recovery Plan. This Plan charts Ireland’s long-term, jobs-led recovery with a focus on building back better. “The overall ambition of the Plan is to exceed pre-crisis employment levels by reaching 2.5 million people in work by 2024. Cru-

cially, though, these jobs will be more productive, more resilient and more secure,” he explained. “A critical step in delivering upon this ambition and overcoming the shock to our labour market is the implementation of our new national employment services strategy: Path-

Each participant will be asked to raise €100 (10 sponsors at €10). The walk will start in Carlingford Car Park by the seafront and end in the Foy Centre for refreshments, music and heartfelt gratitude. This stunning walk

will be kindly led by Clodagh McKevitt of Anam Tours who will regale everyone with tall and short tales of the surrounding landscape and folklore. It will go up the mountain via the Tain Way, veer left towards Barnavave and the Cross, down by the deserted village and back via a scenic route facing the Mourne Mountains. With some decent weather and Covid pending, this promises to be a day of feelgood fun. “We are hoping to see a very long snake

of people wearing our tee-shirts, scaling the Cooley mountains in support of this vital and much needed service”, said RCNE Manager, Grace McArdle. McGreehan welcomes funding for On-Street Charge Points for Electric Vehicles in Louth

Local Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed the announcement that the first approvals for funding under the SEAI’s on-street public charge point scheme for Local Authorities has been awarded. These are the first grants under this particular scheme to roll out public Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across counties and towns in Ireland. Louth Co Council have applied for funding for 20 charge points. Senator Erin McGreehan commented, “It’s great news that Louth County Council have applied and secured funding for 20 charge points for EV charge points. “There are an increasing number of people changing to electric vehicles and to have 20 extra charg-

O’Murchu calls on the government to support FASN

‘All levels of government’ will be called on to help with the funding crisis at the Family Addiction Support Network (FASN) says Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú who attended a meeting with the organisation last week. The meeting was organised via Zoom after the FASN said they may be forced to close the services after the HSE failed to give commitments on funding. Board members of FASN outlined the multiple contacts that they had with the HSE since the start of the year. Despite numerous engagements, there was not, by last Friday, no definitive commitment

Ruairí O Murchú, TD. from the health service in relation to funding. Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘I have been in touch with my Sinn Féin colleagues in Meath, Monaghan and Cavan, which are covered by organisation and we are

seeking Dáil time this week, along with being in touch with Minister Frank Feighan, to ensure that all levels of government are called on to help solve this funding crisis. ‘I have also been in

touch with the HSE who have told me they are looking at whether funding would be available due to increased costs or due to lack of fundraising because of Covid 19. ‘There is funding coming down the line for family addiction services, but there is as yet no detail on the criteria and timelines and this is something that needs to be looked at straight away ‘This crisis at FASN has shown the need, as I have stated before, for a ‘whole of government’ approach to tackling the scourge of drugs in this State, and failure by government to give it the importance it deserves’.

‘Silver surfers’ meet for first time

Smart Network Louth group finally meet in person at the Green Church on Monday. A GROUP of ‘silver surfers’ called Smart Network Louth met for the first time in 15 months outside the Green Church in Dundalk to participate in a guided tour of the grounds. According to group member Ken H. Ramsey, Smart Network Louth is supported by Louth Leader Partnership. “Louth Leader Partnership provides lots of different services for free, one being one-toone support re smartphones,

tablets and laptops, developing on to group sessions,” said Ken. “These sessions were held every week in their premises, this came to a halt in March of last year due to the pandemic so we proceeded to learn and do Zoom sessions and undertook different projects. “This was of great help to us all as we were housebound as most of us are senior citizens. We are very grateful to Louth Leader Partnership for all of

their assistance.” Smart Network Louth met for the first time in 15 months outside the Green Church on Monday, July 12 at 11am to participate in a guided tour of the Church grounds. “The Green Church being the oldest building in Dundalk still is use,” said Ken. “The tour was extremely successful. Trevor Patterson and Colin Llyod are members of the church who facilitated us on the tour.”

Warning issued to protect Finn the Carlingford dolphin

A charity organisation dedicated to the protection and conservation of dolphins has issued a number of guidelines and tips to ensure the safety of Finn the dolphin who has become a popular resident in Carlingford Lough over the past year or two. Marine Connection documents solitary dolphins (and whales) around the world, and have asked people who spot Finn to report their sightings to the organisation in order that they can keep track of him on their database (info@ marineconnection.org). They also warned all water users be they boat/ jet ski owners, winds surfers, kayakers, swimmers or divers to be vigilant and allow Finn space if they see him. “Finn is a solitary male bottlenose dolphin, a species usually found in large family/social groups known as pods, it is therefore a mystery to where this lone dolphin has come from. With

People on the water have been warned to look out for Finn the dolphin.

bottlenose dolphins usually living up to 50 years of age, Finn could remain in the area for many years, similar to Fungie, the Dingle solitary dolphin who lived in the bay for 37 years,” explained Marine Connections. “Watching a solitary dolphin in his natural habitat is a very special experience but just as we humans need our personal space, so does Finn the dolphin. Bottlenose are the most familiar of the dolphin species, which have a near-global distribution (except the polar re-

gions) with coastal populations entering into bays, estuaries and river mouths. As Finn currently lives in Irish waters, he is protected under the Wildlife Act (1976) and also under a no. of international directives and agreements which Ireland is signatory to. Finn’s presence will undoubtedly lead to an increase in marine craft and therefore naturally lead to an increase in the likelihood of an encounter with the dolphin, who is by nature a sociable animal. “Marine Connection is calling for all water

users (boat/jet ski owners, wind surfers, kayakers, swimmers and divers) in the Carlingford Lough area to be vigilant, and if they spot the dolphin, allow him his space. Disrupting his resting or feeding times can negatively impact Finn causing a “disruption of natural behavioural patterns” and as he would usually burn up to 33,000 calories a day - equivalent to 25 kilograms of fish - he needs time to do so. Please keep your distance, show him respect and be responsible,” concluded the statement.
