A woman who was adopted as a baby 45 years ago in Dundalk has made a plea for her birth mother to get in touch with her.

Margaret Norton is seeking to find her birth mother who was from the Louth, or possibly Monaghan area.

Born in 1972 Margaret was then given to her adoptive parents in the car park of a hotel.

Growing up in North Dublin, Margaret came from a loving family and from an early age she knew she was adopted.

However, she had always been curious about who she was, who her parents were despite her wonderful upbringing. “I was very

much a wanted child but it’s a natural need to want to know who you are,” she said.

All Margaret’s parents would tell her was that she came with clothes and was delivered in the car park of a hotel possibly on the Dublin Road when she was three days old. Margaret is hoping that this information will register with her birth mother and she will get in contact.

The birth of her own children really made Margaret want to find her birth parents. “I can’t imagine life without my own children, you couldn’t imagine a life without your children,” said Margaret.

Frightening attack on three drivers

Three motorists were fortunate to survive without injury after they were the victims of random frightening attacks.

Gardai are appealing for information on the separate incidents that occurred within minutes of each other on Friday June 9.

The first incident happened between 5.30pm and 6pm at Rossmakea, Knockbridge, when a car was overtaken by a Northern registered silver VW Passat. An object was thrown from the car which broke the window of the injured party’s car.

At 6.40pm the same vehicle passed a car at Dungooley, Kilcurry, when one of the occupants began swinging an iron bar, breaking the windscreen. A minute later an occupant in the car struck the windscreen of another car but on this occasion didn’t succeed in breaking it.

Gardai are also investigating two burglaries in Ladywell Tce on Sunday June 11.

A man checked his shed between 6.30pm and

7.30pm to discover that his Flymo lawnmower had been taken.

On the same date a man in the next door house had been working in his shed until 7pm. He went into his house for a break and when he returned to the shed at 8pm he discovered that his petrol strimmer had been taken.

Meanwhile, a van was broken into on the Red Barns Rd overnight on June 9/10 and a number of tools were taken, including two drills, a nail gun, transformer and jigsaw.

Seven racing bikes were stolen from a van parked in the Carrickdale Hotel on Saturday night/Sunday

morning last.

The items stolen included a white Corratech racing bike, a black and orange KTM bike, a black and white Giant bike and a Claud Butler black and white racing bike.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested and charged in relation to the discovery of a cannabis grow house on Friday June 9.

As part of an intelligence with Fleetwood Interior Designer led investigation into the sale and supply of drugs in the Dundalk area, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, the Special Crime Task Force and local Drugs units carried out a number of searches.

During the course of these searches a cannabis grow house with discovered in Rassan, Hackballscross.

“Over the years I questioned my adoption. I got on well with my parents but they never gave much information,” she explained.

An appeal in 2013 resulted in Margaret receiving two anonymous letters claiming to be from Margaret’s birth mother. She is hoping that if these were genuine that her mother will get in touch again.

“This is a matter of the heart it’s an emotional need. I don’t feel my mother has done anything wrong. She did what she had to do out of necessity at the time.

I’ll never not wonder about who my mother is. I’ll never really put it down,” stated Margaret.

School athletes continue impressive form St Vincent’s athletes once again proved themselves to be top contenders at the Irish Life Health All Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships held at the Tullamore Harriers stadium on June 3.

In the junior girls 800m Neasa Reilly was on form in a quality line out and finished in third place. This adds to her All Ireland bronze cross country medal which Neasa won earlier this year, proving herself to be a top contender at both middle and long distance.

In the junior girls field events Aoibhín McMahon was once again in record breaking form, having for the second year in a row broken both the javelin and shot putt records at the Leinster finals. In the shot putt, she threw close to a personal best and finished in the silver medal position. In the javelin competition Aoibhín added another national record to her repertoire throwing 44.99m and finishing well ahead of the competition to take the gold medal. Aoibhín now holds both the minor shot putt

and junior javelin national records.

Kate O’Connor was on form and proved herself as a force to be reckoned with in the intermediate shot putt and javelin events. In the shot putt, Kate threw confidently and finished in the gold medal position.

Kate also added her name to the record books in the intermediate javelin competition having broken the Leinster record in qualification. She threw a distance of 45.65m smashing the previous long held record of 44.32m which was set in 1982.

St Vincent’s are well renowned for their expertise in the relay events and this year was no exception. In the junior girls 4x100m competition the seasoned team of Ellen Mc Bride, Sarah Morgan, Maria Smith and Sarah Clarke were top contenders in this highly competitive field having won this event at minor level in 2016 setting a new national record in the process. However, they were somewhat out of form this season having been narrowly defeated at

In the intermediate 4x100m relay competition the well experienced team of Patience Jumbo-Gula, Kate O’Connor, Kelly Breen and Gemma McCrave executed a flawless performance from start to finish taking the top honour in this event finishing in a time of 49.44s.

In the team rankings St Vincent’s were awarded second place in the junior category missing out on the top position by just one point. The intermediate girls team also achieved second position in the national rankings.

ISPCC seeking Childline volunteers The ISPCC is recruiting volunteers for its Childline service in Louth/Meath.

Childline calls, texts and online messages, from children all over Ireland are answered by a team of volunteers, who are trained to respond to children and to listen actively to what they have to say. Childline receives over 400,000 contacts from children through its phone, text and online services and is available 24-hours a day, for any child who needs to

talk.

Volunteering opportunities are available to anyone who is interested in listening to children, who is over 18 and is willing to undergo Childline’s training course and commit to a regular volunteering session.

The ISPCC has an upcoming information evenings for people who are interested in finding out more about becoming a volunteer on Monday June 19 at 6.30pm at the ISPCC’s office at Distillery House, Dyer

Street, Drogheda with the training course running on Saturdays starting from Saturday June 24.

This is an opportunity to come along and hear about the service, and what is involved in volunteering, from people who are already volunteers.

Mark McGeown proved himself to be the best in country as he set a new Irish sheep shearing record.

The Ravensdale man achieved his goal when he sheared a total of 514 sheep in eight hours on Sunday, which works out at an average 56.3 seconds per sheep.

Mark’s day began at 8pm and included just three breaks totaling two hours. As it drew nearer to 6pm, the cheers got louder and louder until the bell rang, calling time on this marathon event.

By then, the special marquee erected at the Louth Agricultural show to hold the shearing stage erupted in thunderous applause and jubilation.

Running a shebeen at back of his house A father of 15 who pleaded guilty to running a shebeen at his home was sentenced to four months in prison at Dundalk District Court.

Patrick Stokes of 43 Oakland Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, had admitted trading without a licence on February 6, 2016, at a previous sitting when a Probation Report was ordered.

The court heard that Gardai found a bar, lounge seats and chairs, a juke box, disco lights and raffle tickets when they searched the premises.

Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, pointed out that her client hadn’t attended Probation appointments as he had moved to Waterford. She added that the defendant was eager to comply

with the Probation Service.

The court heard that the 47-year-old father of 15, had 37 previous convictions. He is a builder by trade who had returned to live in Dundalk after a spell in Waterford.

Judge Coughlan imposed a four-month sentence and fixed recognisances for an appeal.

Close contests in local Snooker League The Dundalk Snooker League continued during the week with some great action.

In the first match it was the battle of the O’Hanlons with Stephen’s team taking on Brendan’s side. In the end it was Stephen’s team who came out on top 3-1 with thanks to some great play from Stephen McBride (pictured).

In match two the points were shared with a 2-2 draw played out between Alan Thompson’s team and Mickey Ralph’s side, a result that keeps Mickey’s team on top of the pile.

In the final match Paddy Hayes’ team beat Justin’s team 3-1 with each of the frames closely contested.

Innovative new show for theatre fans

Fans of theatre will get the chance to fully engage with a show during an innovative production at the Crowne Plaza on Friday June 16.

Catastrophe theatre presents an interactive form of theatre, featuring local actor, Paudie Breen, which includes an exciting piece of theatre and three course meal. The company is taking murder mystery on tour starting in Dundalk’s Crowne Plaze this Friday night June 16.

A Midsummer Night’s Murderconsists of an ensemble cast that includes Paudie, who is looking forward to the event. e “Last October, I was asked to do osome voice over work for midsumdmer murders and just by chance on ,the very same day an actor pulled out sof the production. I was offered the role and I grabbed it.” stated Paudie.

Paudie got bitten by the acting bug -back in 1997, when he first appeared ein a school production of Oliver duroing his school days at St. Josephs dNational school in Muirhevnamor.

Following on from that production Paudie joined Dundalk Musical Society, were he honed his stage craft.

A Midsummer Night’s Murder will see the talented actor assume his first professional role, which will take Paudie on tour to Tallaght and Sligo.

This is not a first for the actor, who has previously toured with Dundalk

“I got involved in dramatic acting or plays as opposed to musical theatre about five years ago with Dundalk Theatre Workshop under Pat Murphy and I’ve participated in the festival circuit with plays such as Winslow boy and Glen Ross Glen Garry by David Mamet,” stated Paudie.

The small ensemble cast requires a different type of rehearsal process than what Paudie would be more accustomed to.

“We didn’t have a huge number of rehearsals just a longer format which really suited this style of theatre. The play is interactive and allows the audience to try and figure out who the killer is, its great fun” stated Paudie.

Local students continue learning in USA Two Louth students studying in Dublin City University have been offered a place on the prestigious Bennett Hospitality Internship Programme in the United States. Niamh Devlin from Togher and Brian McCarthy, a native of Collon, flew out to Charleston, South Carolina on Friday June 9 to begin a summer internship with the Bennett Hospitality group.

The Bennett Hospitality internship programme is a collaborative initiative, initially devised by Mike Bennett, founder of Bennett Hospitality and Trustee of the DCU Educational Trust, in 2009. Mr Bennett, an entrepreneur who grew his business from a bicycle and

moped rental company in 1977 to an organisation running 16 hotels and eight restaurants today, created the programme to provide students with insights into the skills required to run a successful business.

Interns learn the ropes of the hotel industry by rotating through a variety of departments, including marketing and sales, finance and human resources. Participants also get to grips with the day-to-day essentials of running a hotel while working at the front desk and alongside the housekeeping and maintenance teams.

Speaking about the internship, Brian McCarthy, a final year Business Studies student

in DCU said, “This internship is a great opportunity to gain international business experience and to learn from an incredible entrepreneur like Mike Bennett.

I hope this experience will broaden my horizons, create some lifelong memories and be a starting point for a career in the hospitality industry.”

Also speaking about the internship, Business Studies student Niamh Devlin added, “I am looking forward to experiencing a new culture and living in a unique city like Charleston whilst also meeting new people and gaining valuable skills and experience for DCU students Niamh Devlin and Brian McCarthy from Louth selected for the Bennett Internship my future career.”

Cooley Mountain Trek in aid of Fighting Blindness Local fundraiser Eric Beggs is hoping that this year’s Cooley Mountain Trek can match last year’s success when he raised an impressive €7000 for the Fighting Blindness charity.

Eric has been involved with the ‘Fighting Blindness’ charity for over ten years now and has raised thousands of euro thanks to various charity events such as chapel gate collections, quizzes and sponsored

walks. The Cooley Mountain Trek is now in its fifth year and Eric is delighted to be able to raise some money for a charity which is close to his heart.

The Lisdoo Road man was diagnosed with a retinal degenerative condition called retinitis pigmentosa (RP) which unfortunately can’t be cured. Eric first started having difficulties with his sight in his early 20s and it has progressed to

the stage that now in his 60s he is completely blind. He has been a keen supporter of the charity ‘Fighting Blindness and is a huge admirer of the work they do around the country.

“They are doing marvellous work in fighting blindness and I am absolutely convinced that they will have a treatment and cure for blindness in the very near future.

They are making huge leaps forward all the time and

helping so many people who have difficulties with their sight”, explained Eric.

“Although it’s too late to help me I am determined to make sure that I can do as much as I can to ensure there is a cure for younger people who have sight difficulties which is why I organised the Cooley Mountain Trek.

I have to say that people in Dundalk have been wonderful since I began this fundraiser and I thank every one

of them who have supported me over the years. I’d like to thank all the sponsors and everybody who helped me out as well. The Lisdoo especially, have been a great help and have always accommodated me when needed”, he added.

This year’s Cooley Mountain Trek will take place on Sunday July 2 with the 10km walk starting at 11am (for more experienced walkers) and the 5km walk start-

ing at midday.

The route is a looped walk which begins at the Lumpers in Ravensdale. A free bus will leave Dundalk at the Lisdoo car park (Newry side) at 10:30 for the 11am walk and 11:30 for the 12pm walk.

Registration is €20 and includes refreshments and entertainment after the event.

New portable defibrillator for Bush school Louth Public Participation Network (PPN) continued its efforts to promote lifesaving skills in the community by making the presentation of a portable defibrillator to Bush Post Primary School.

Louth PPN launched a first aid training initiative for secondary schools throughout County Louth in 2016/2017. Recognising the value of lifesaving skills in the community, funding was secured to offer this training to 5th Year and Transition Year students. Over 420 pupils have taken part to date.

The course enables students to be prepared to act in an emergency or possibly life-threatening situation.

Knowing what to do before an ambulance arrives may be the difference

between life and death.

The learning acquired will be of benefit to the students at home, school, sports grounds, within the wider community as well as in their future workplace.

First aid training provides for safer practices, which in turn assists in reducing further injury to those affected by accident or sudden illness.

Being able to respond quickly and effectively in an emergency situation provides preparedness within our community, which is greatly needed.

Louth PPN is the first county to take this initiative and it plans to support all PPN Secretariats around the country to introduce it in schools, and isinvolved in actively seeking its inclusion on the national curriculum.

Dundalk Cricket Club recorded a dramatic victory in Dromiskin on Sunday as another fine bowling performance helped them win a lowscoring game.

With many games around Leinster postponed due to rain, Dundalk will be delighted that their game was played as they recovered from a disappointing batting display to beat Greystones and record their second win in-a-row in Division 10 of the Leinster leagues.

Dundalk could only muster 116 from their batting innings, both skipper Andrew Williams and Haroon Khan making 29.

Defending a small total, Dundalk knew they needed to strike early on and they did this brilliantly.

Four maidens in succession by the opening combination of Williams and Muhammad Zahid reduced Greystones to 3-2.

With those two and Waqas Khan bowling well Greystones limped to 37-5 with 20 overs gone.

The visitors were clearly hoping to bat through their overs and edge over the line and while Ashley Kempton was at the crease they were still the favourites.

However, he was eventually bowled by Muhammad after making 35, the highest score of the game and after that Dundalk pushed for victory.

Still Greystones battled but eventually after a final run out, they were dismissed for 96 and Dundalk won the game by 20 runs.

Captain Williams ended with four wickets, while Muhammad got three and Waqas two.

It was a great boost for Dundalk who after some early defeats now have real momentum at the halfway mark of their league campaign.

Michael Ward of Headford House, Ardee Rd, Dunleer, was given the warning by Judge John Coughlan after he pleaded guilty to a number of driving charges arising from incidents on October 11, 2015.

“I want people compensated

for this and I will give him one week. If you don’t pay it I will extend your sentences. You have a lot of friends, go and collect or you are going back to the cell”, warned the judge.

Mr Ward asked if he could “give a few quid every week”, but the judge rejected this given the time that had elapsed since the accident.

The 35-year-old defendant

pleaded guilty to eight hit and run charges along with four dangerous driving charges at Dublin Rd, Inner Relief Rd, Blackrock Rd and The Square, Blackrock.

Barrister, Ronan O’Carroll, explained that his client had already pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge arising from the same incident.

He had been given a four-

month sentence consecutive to a fine month sentence, and had served seven and a half months in total.

He admitted that he had no insurance and was driving while disqualified.

The damage was estimated at €500 and witness expenses at over €600, with Judge Coughlan stating that he wanted all the money paid.

John McGahon honoured to take over as Cathaoirleach

Fine Gael Councillor John McGahon has revealed that he is honoured to serve as the new chairperson of Dundalk Municipal committee following his recent election.

John will be the fourth chairperson of the committee taking over from Mark Dearey and the proud Dundalk man is delighted to hold this position and very much hopes to champion Dundalk.

“I love being a County Councillor and having the opportunity to represent my town of Dundalk as Chairperson is a real honour. On a professional level, becoming Chair provides me with a platform to champion Dundalk and I am looking forward to that.”

As the new chairperson for the committee John’s goal is to continue to build on work previously achieved last year and to ensure the area fairly represented.

“We have huge scope with reserved functions to increase the power and remit of the Mu-

nicipal District and we should continue to push the boundaries with this rather than let power being diluted any further.

“We have already seen those boundaries pushed in the last year with reserve functions enacted which allowed for the establishment of a sub committee on Britain’s exit from the EU for the Dundalk district and we must continue in the is vein,” explained John.

During the leadership contest the Fine Gael Councillor publicly supported Minister Leo Varadkar, and the young councillor believes he is the right man to lead the party.

“I suppose you could

place me in the new generation of Fine Gael Councillors who are coming through the party. I think Leo will be a fantastic Taoiseach and his straight-talking approach is certainly a strong attribute that he will bring to the role of Taoiseach.”

The result of last week’s general election in the UK will most certainly have an impact on Ireland and their negotiations for leaving the EU. The result of a hung parliament and the possible alliance of the Tories with the DUP has raised even more concern over the effects of Britain’s departure on Ireland. However, The councillor thinks that Tories have weakened their position which in turn could lead to a softer deal.

“Leo Varadkar touched on this earlier in the week when he said the DUP want to maintain the common travel area and want to maintain free trade between these islands and Britain and Europe. So, there’s an opportunity to soften their approach,” stated John.

Musical fundraiser for Cooley playground

Members of Cooley Kickhams GFC were delighted last year, when the club received funding from the CLAR for a grant of €99,900.

The funding will go towards a proposed community playground on the grounds of Cooley Kickhams GFC. The Cooley community has continued to raise funds to make this project happen by

holding a variety of fundraising events.

The latest event involves all the children of the area in a fantastic musical.

‘The Magic of the Musicals’ is a production featuring songs and dances from Disney shows such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, Annie, The Lion King and many more which will be performed by children.

The show will run for two nights on Thursday June 22 and

Friday June 23 in St. Mary’s Parochial Hall, Cooley.

Tickets can be purchased from Barry’s Shop, Dan’s Café and at the Cooley Complex. All the proceeds go towards the New Cooley community playground, the work to start the playground will be commencing very shortly.

The club invites anyone who loves musical theatre to come out and support the show in aid of a great cause.

A group is being formed for the large community now in Dundalk to organise such events to bring Lithuanians together. The event on June 24 will run from 11am to 5pm and at 8pm there will be a concert featuring former Eurovision singer, Donny Montell.

This will coincide with St Jonas’ Festival/Midsummer festival which is celebrated in Lithuania.

By Christopher Myles Kilsaran National School are celebrating another major success after claiming their third successive Fhéile Scoildrámíochta title. The Fifth Class pupils performed their own version of the legend of Labhraigh Loinsigh who was said to have horses ears, and would kill all of his barbers so they wouldn’t tell anybody. The pupils started a series of rehearsals before Christmas, and improved every step of the

way. In February, they were ready to take to the stage, and they headed of to the MacAnna Theatre at DKIT where an excellent performance saw them claim a place in the Leinster Finals in Mullingar.

It was all nerves backstage as the young actors got into their costumes and had their face paint done, and their proud principal led them onstage, where they got a massive applause and acted their hearts out.

An Táin Arts Centre will host the Dance Kids on June 22 and 23 as they unveil their latest show ‘Best Summer Ever’.

Dundalk golfers reach Leinster final Dundalk’s Junior Cup team are through to the Leinster Finals after coming through their area qualifier over the Bank Holiday weekend at Knightsbrook Golf Club where 15 clubs from North Leinster participated.

Dundalk’s panel consisted of Billy Cairns, Shane Hession, Conor McCaughey, Kyle Rafferty, Brian Renaghan, Ciaran Traynor and Clem Walshe and they showed tremendous battling qualities the two-day event.

Lady Captain Maeve Ahern’s Prize to the Men took place on Sunday with the gale force wind and the occasional torrential downpours making for testing conditions for the 180 players and the CSS of 73 reflected the difficulty.

With a Noon tee-off time, Gerry Campbell was one of those who experienced the worst of the weather but it proved to be no deterrent as the 27 handicapper claimed overall victory with a nett 65 after making good use of his shots.

Campbell won by four shots from Danny Gallagher who took second on count back from Pat Curran and JP Gilbourne.

Curran had the consolation of taking the Veteran’s Prize while Gilbourne won Cat-

Noel Reid (16) won Category 2 while Maeve’s husband Dermot (21) and brother-in-law Tim (27) finished first and second in Category 3 after both shot 71s.

Terry Conlon (6) with a 76 had the best gross while James Reilly (28) with a 69 won the Juvenile Prize.

Four handicapper Sean Laverty, with an excellent score of 41pts won Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford competition and his gross score of 37pts was good enough to also take the Gross Prize.

Visitor Patrick Toner, a 22 handicapper from Greenore, won the Bank Holiday Monday Open Singles Stableford competition with a score of 42pts with Laverty winning Category One on 40pts.

Saturday saw the second annual Stephen Melia Sevens competition in aid of the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association (IMNDA).

The competition was organised by the Louth County Board, John Mitchels GFC and St. Josephs GFC with matches taking place in the Darver Centre of Excellence and Cluskey Park, Dromiskin.

Over 20 teams entered, mainly from the home county and some from Meath and Cavan and the day proved to be a very competitive affair. The eight teams qualifying for the quarter finals were, Naomh Martin, Ramor United (Cavan), St. Marys Ardee, O’Connells, Roche Emmets, Wolfe Tones (Meath), Stabannon and St. Brides.

In the first two quarter finals Ramor United proved too strong for St. Marys and in a thriller after extra time the O’Connells edged

out near rivals Naomh Martin. The third quarter final saw Roche Emmets, last year’s finalists, come through in a very tight match after extra time against St. Brides. In the fourth match Wolfe Tones came through against Stabannon Parnells.

In the semi-finals Ramor United defeated O’Connells 3-7 to 0-5 and Wolfe Tones won out against a battling Roche Emmets by 4-8 to 2-5. In the final it was a very impressive Ramor United who claimed the title defeating Wolfe Tones by 2-10 to 0-2, with their star player Pauric O’Connell claiming the player of the tournament award.

The rest period before the final saw the U14s from Man O’War play St. Josephs featuring Stephen’s son Adam.

Good Morning Louth volunteers are making huge difference to community

They say that it’s the simple things in life that make all the difference, and that is certainly the case for one Dundalk-based community project that has helped transform lives over the past five years.

The concept of Good Morning Louth is no more complicated than making regular phone contact with elderly people who are living on their own, but it has made a dramatic impact on quality of their lives.

When it stated first in April 2012 there were less than ten volunteers and a handful of clients, but such is the demand for what is ostensibly a befriending service, that it has now upwards on 60 volunteers. Over 500 people have availed of the service.

The success of the project is underlined by the fact that it has now come under the umbrella of Alone making it part of a coordinated suite of services that are being made available to older people.

One of the cornerstones of the success of the project is the input of those who give up their time to make regular calls between 9am and 1pm. One of those providing a friendly voice is Martin Pearson who outlines what is involved.

“I have been doing this for about four years and it really is

a matter of befriending people and building up a relationship with them. The fact is that people are living longer and a lot are on their own. Loneliness can lead to greater issues such as mental health problems so it is important to help before this can become a problem.

“It is all about connecting people and while modern technology is great, you can’t replace human contact,” added Martin.

“Even for people who do have family around, they are not always available to call, while it is always nice to hear a new friendly voice. They might be inclined to say things to us that wouldn’t tell a family member, while they

could also be more inclined to follow our advice in some instances,” explained Martin.

While the service is designed as a friendly chat to help people feel more secure, it can also provide assistance in areas such as accessing grants for home improvements, security advice, smoke alarms etc.

Martin is happy to recommend anyone interested in giving two hours per week as a volunteer as he feels there is some much to be gained from it.

“I think we all get as much out of it as the clients. It is great to be part of something so worthwhile.

There is also a social aspect to meeting people here, while we

also have a couple of nights out every year among ourselves”, he added.

Anne Murpy, Co-ordinator of Good Morning Louth, explained that the response to the project has been brilliant over the past five years and encouraged anyone interested to contact the office at 9330103.

“It is very reassuring for people to be linked into an organisation that has their back and to know that somebody is there for them.

If we don’t have all the information they want at hand, we can get it, and with Alone behind us now we hope to extend the services,” explained Anne.

According to Brian Lambe of Alone, the support of a national organisation means that services will be more sustainable.

“Alone provides a suite of services of which Good Morning Louth is one part. By linking with clients we can conduct assessments and visit them to allow us to cater for all their needs”, he revealed.

Those services include help with the needs of clients in relation to areas such as health, housing, finance and social activities.

Upcoming events at Dundalk Library

Dundalk Branch Library welcomes local artist James Muckian with his first official exhibition titled “Scar Tissue – Signs and Reflections”. The exhibition runs from June 20 to 28 with a launch night on Thursday 22 at 6pm.

The library will launch the

summer reading challenge on June 24 at 11am with a performance by local singing group NCkids.

Louth County Libraries will run the Summer Stars Reading Programme for children in all library branches during the summer holidays from mid June to

the end of August. Each child who registers for Summer Stars at their local library joins in the fun of reading lots of exciting books during their summer holidays. They will receive their own Summer Stars Reading Card to record their progress along the way and a library re-

ward stamp will be added to their reading card at the library after each book read. Children will be encouraged to continue reading throughout the programme.

Gary Anderson to play exhibition in Dundalk

Local darts fans are in for a treat next month following the announcement that two-time world champions and current world number two Gary Anderson is travelling to Dundalk for an exhibition match.

Scottish darts legend Anderson will play in the Crowne Plaza on Sunday June 25 with all proceeds from the evening going to Cara Cancer Care Centre. The event is being organised

by Finbarr Kelly and Mary Justine Gray and

follows hot on the heels of last month’s successful event which saw Phil Taylor play an exhibition match in the Ramada Hotel on the Armagh Road.

Mary Justine Gray is hopeful that this latest fundraiser will prove just as successful as the Phil Taylor exhibition last month.

“We managed to raise a nice bit of money for the North Louth Hospice and Cara Cancer Care Centre last month and we have decided to bring Gary Anderson over this time around and donate

all profits made towards Cara Cancer Care Centre.

“Myself and Finbarr have both had family members who have passed away through cancer and we know that Cara are self-funded and do some amazing work.

“There are VIP meet and greet packages available for €35 which will give you a chance to meet Gary and will also include refreshments.

There are also general admission tickets available for €15. The format on the night will see Gary play a leg of darts

against 20 local darts players and we’re sure it will be a great night.

60% of motorists report 15% increase in insurance costs

Over 64% of motorists have seen their motor insurance premiums increase by at least 15% year on year, according to a recent poll carried out by AA Ireland.

30.48% of the over 3,000 respondents to a survey undertaken by AA Car Insurancestated that at the time of their last renewal their motor insurance premium had increased by between 15% and 30%, with a further 24.82% of those surveyed reporting a year-onyear increase of between 30% and 50%. Meanwhile, almost a tenth of respondents (9.16%) had seen their premiums rise by more than 50% year-on year.

“While it’s impossible to predict what the future holds for insurance prices, the AA has been highlighting the issue of rising premiums for a long time now and in November 2015 released a set a simple proposals to help tackle this issue. Thankfully at the start of this year Minister Eoghan Murphy and the Cost of Insurance Working Group released a report, which contained many of the AA’s original proposals such as the expanded use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition by Gardaí to identify uninsured drivers and reduce fraud, outlining

steps the government will take in response to the current situation,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated.

“However, what can’t be allowed to happen is that this report winds up collecting dust on a shelf somewhere with no follow up action. With proper legislation and action from government to tackle rising premiums we will wind up with a better insurance industry and, as a result, fairer prices for and treatment of the average motorist.”

While the majority of motorists have seen an increase in their premiums, the AA survey also found that a significant group of motorists have seen no rise in the cost of insurance. 8.33% of those polled stated that the cost of their insurance had stayed approximately the same year on year. Meanwhile, 5.54% of those surveyed had seen a reduction in their motor insur-

ance premiums of at least 5% “It’s interesting to see that, even in the wider context of rising premiums, quite a sizeable percentage of motorists have seen no increase or a reduction in their premiums.

As with any insurance policy, our advice is to always shop around to ensure that you are getting the best deal,” Faughnan added. “Instead of simply accepting a renewal quote from your current provider shop around to find the best option for you, or even call your current insurer and advise them of any circumstances since you originally purchased cover that may have changed which could lower your premium.”

According to the survey, drivers aged between 35 and 46 were the most likely to have seen an increase in their premium, with 87.69% of those within this age bracket reporting a year on year increase in their premium of at least 5%
