With restrictions easing and Louth’s 14 day incidence rate for COVID-19 continuing to fall (down to 119.5 per 100,000 population compared to national average of 131.9) there have been signs of hope this week after the sacrifices made by many over the past number of months. However, according to local TD Ruairí O’Murchú people need to ‘keep their eye on the prize of winning the war against COVID-19’ while guarding against complacency.

This weeks easing of restrictions have seen some construction workers get back to work, the return of schoolchildren and an increase of the travel limit to 20k from the previous 5k. However, while those restrictions are welcome many more businesses and services are stil in limbo with not much immediate hope for the hospitality sector in particular over the next month or two.

“With all primary and second level students back to school on Monday, the Sinn Féin TD said that Louth people ‘need to continue what they’re doing – social distancing and minimising contacts’.

“He said: ‘Louth has shown how, with perseverance and a lot of sacrifice over the last few months, that the incident rate can be reduced dramatically. We need to keep our eyes on the prize of winning the war against Covid-19.

‘We are getting there, but people need to remain vigilant, particularly now that the schools are

returning, there is a slight easing of restrictions. People are allowed to travel within their county and 20kms from their home’.

But, he added, the government needs to ‘move quicker and be clearer’ about changes to mandatory hotel quarantine.

“There are a number of questions that need dealt with including what happens to fully vaccinated people who are coming in, what constitutes essential travel and how Erasmus students and others will be facilitated. This has to be done taking into public health expertise.

“We are coming late to mandatory hotel quarantine as a policy

and had we done this earlier there would have been greater benefits and we would be in a better place.

“The whole point is that it reduces the numbers travelling into Ireland, but the government needs to be better at dealing with the inevitable anomalies that happen, through engagement with public health experts’.

“Above all the health service needs to ensure that there is the capacity and the personnel to ramp up vaccinations as more doses flood into State in the coming weeks.

About 929,000 doses are expected into the State this month, with 1.25 million in May and 1.75 million in June,” stated Deputy O’Murchú.

However, the government’s vaccine rollout plan receiving a setback on Monday after a decision was made to no longer give the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine to people under 60 on safety grounds.

The decision was made by the National Immunisation Advisory Committee who said it was made due to the very rare risk condition of unusual blood clots in people who received the jab.

As many as 15000 people who were due to receive the AZ vaccine yesterday had their appointments cancelled with the government forced into changing their rollout plans after NIAC’s decision.

Dundalk record worst start to a season since 1998/99

However, speaking on the LOI Arena podcast Dundalk FC club captain Brian Gartland quashed those rumours stating that the meeting was arranged to regroup and let the players know what is expected of them.

Takeaway pints back on the menu

TAKEAWAY pints are back on the menu following the easing of level 5 restrictions, according to Louth Vintners Federation PRO Michael Finnegan.

Michael of Camelot Bar and Off Licence said outdoor pints were never officially banned under Covid-19 restrictions.

“It was never illegal but Taoiseach Micheál Martin called for them to stop being sold at the beginning of the current lockdown,” said Michael.

“With the restrictions eased and people able to travel around their county it is likely to become more popular.”

Greg Gormley of Russells Saloon said he didn’t know of any Dundalk bars doing takeaway pints.

“Uncle Tom’s and the Clermont in Blackrock are doing food and drinks,” he said.

“The Lumper’s in Ravensdale is doing takeaway drinks, and PJ O’Hares in Carlingford is doing food and drinks.”

Greg added: “It’s nice to see some pubs are open and doing a trade and it’s nice that members of the public are able to get their pints.

“It’s good to see it. It’s a wee bit of normality.

As far as pints of Guinness are concerned, pints are far better than cans. A can is no substitute for a draft.

Virtual memory cafés to continue post-pandemic The Alzheimer memory Cafés were set up to provide a warm and welcoming space for people with dementia, their family and friends, social and health care professionals to meet, exchange ideas and learnings.

The Café is based on an international model which began in Holland and pre pandemic it usually opened monthly providing light refreshments and a mix of ed-

ucation and support. Often a guest speaker is invited each month to talk to the people in attendance about a topic of interest relating to dementia but most of all the café provided a warm supportive environment for people to chat and enjoy a social occasion in a supportive environment.

When restrictions were put in place due to the global pandemic it obviously wasn’t feasible to continue

with the memory café and so organisers had to think on their feet and move the operation online. And so the virtual memory café was born. According to Helen Barron who is one of the organisers of the Louth/Monaghan virtual Alzheimers café the initiative has been received very favourably since launching last year.

“We know that social interaction with other people is a vital component

When we get back to normal after the pandemic we will go back to meeting up in person as we know a lot of people love to get out of the house and meet up in person. We are also aware that some people are simply not very tech savvy and maybe

struggle to join us online and would rather meet in person. However, we do intend to continue with the virtual memory café also and run that in conjunction with the physical café meet up’s,” explained Helen.

The virtual memory café takes place on the second Tuesday of each month.

Ulster Bank should gift its building back to Dundalk—McGahon The Ulster Bank building on Clanbrasill Street should be gifted back to Dundalk following the banks decision to close it’s branch according to Senator John McGahon.

Speaking on his proposal, Senator McGahon said “In light of Ulster Banks proposal to start winding down their operation in Dundalk, I think the bank should make one final gesture to the town that has served it so well and they should give the building back to Dundalk.

The people of Dundalk have been very loyal to Ulster Bank over the years and I

believe it’s time for the Bank to acknowledge that and give something back to the town as it decides to reduce and remove its operation from Dundalk.

There is huge untapped potential for such a historic building right in the middle of our town square, it could practically be anything. It could be a working hub that will accommodate more people who will be working remotely into the future, there are limitless opportunities.

My reasoning behind this proposal is my genuine fear that this building could become vacant for a considera-

ble period like Dunnes Stores in Park Street.

It was left idle for over a decade and only now are discussions starting about its future.

I would be very fearful that if Ulster Bank didn’t make a serious commitment about their own premises, it could follow the same path.

I have written to the Jane Howard, Ulster Bank’s Chief Executive Officer and asked her what the banks future intentions are about the building and would they consider providing the local community with the opportunity of using it concluded Senator McGahon.

Councillor Kelly welcomes long-awaited road re-surfacing on the Ecco Road Local Councillor Seán Kelly has welcomed Louth County Council’s road resurfacing programme for 2021 which has included a section of the Ecco Road in Dundalk. The planned works include road resurfacing and

drainage works from the Clan Na Gael clubrooms to the car park at Dunnes Stores Ard Easmuinn and also includes a section of Ashling Park.

These works which will be completed later this year and will be done so at a cost of €439k.

Kelly commented ‘this is an issue I have raising since elected, this road is in a deplorable state – the damage over time to cars, the noise and the flooding issues when there is heavy rain have been a problem for local residents for many

years. It is great to see that works have finally been announced and I will continue to push the Council to complete the rest of the road up to the junction with the Carrick Road next year. It’s great to see progress and investment in this area.’ Cllr Sean Kelly.

High-risk teachers heading back to ‘choc-a-block’ classrooms High-risk teachers heading back to ‘choc-a-block’ classrooms, says ASTI President Teachers in the high-risk category who are suffering from cancer, heart failure and other illnesses must

be facilitated to work from home until they are safely vaccinated, ASTI President Ann Piggott told more than 450 delegates and observers at the ASTI Annual Convention last week.

The ASTI President said

these teachers, and teachers in the 60 to 64-year category, have been told to return to “choc-a-block” classrooms from April 12th.

“The latest promised ease of restrictions will allow only two people who are

vaccinated to meet indoors, but in undersized classrooms, the parallel universe continues: 33 can meet without vaccinations.”

Ann Piggott said teachers have experienced a decade of increased workload

which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. She added that school principals in particular have had a difficult year, “which will see many principals cutting short their career span short due to exhaustion and overload”

On the issue of new teachers, she said unequal pay and precarious contracts represent “a meagre starting point to attract young teachers into the profession”.

“Previously new teachers, who really wanted to teach,

used to find second jobs in shops, bars and restaurants.

Now their only reliable way to earn a steady income in the early years of teaching no longer exists,” said the ASTI President.

The government needs to engage with private operators to ensure that ‘decent rural broadband’ is delivered as quickly as possible, Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú has told the Dáil.

The Dundalk TD was speaking during a motion on Project 2040, which included statements on the government’s recently launched plan for rural Ireland.

He also raised the issue under promised legislation and pushed Tanáiste Leo Varadkar on the issue The Sinn Féin deputy, who is his party’s spokesperson on broadband, said during the motion that on ‘some level’ there was ‘no alternative to the National Broadband Plan but it ‘needs to be accelerated’.

He said: ‘We have heard much commentary from the Tánaiste and from the Minister,

Deputy Eamon Ryan, as to their conversations with National Broadband Ireland, NBI. ‘I spoke to representatives of NBI myself and they brought up particular issues in respect of planning permission and dealing with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, TII, and local authorities. I am told these issues are being dealt with, which is necessary for this acceleration. This needs to happen. We also need to get timelines.

‘Even in the bestcase scenario, however, we are talking about a seven-year project becoming a five-year project.

‘We need the Government to engage with private operators and to look at alternatives so that we can deliver decent rural broadband, whether by satellite or other means, as an interim solution before the full roll-out.

‘I request that the Government do all it can and engage with these private operators in this regard. Sinn Féin will be bringing forward proposals in this area in the very near future because it is so important.

‘We are talking about remote working but that will not be possible until people have the facilities to do so in their homes or in remote hubs.’.

In response Minister Hildegarde Naughton said: ‘I have received confirmation that discussions are ongoing with NBI regarding other operators trying to fill in the gap.

‘The Department is aware of the issues and we are working with local authorities to try to unlock any challenges and do whatever we can to accelerate the roll-out.”

Leo Varadkar about his engagement with NBI with a view to engaging with private operators as well as interim solutions for areas that are going to be waiting years for broadband.

In response, the Tanáiste said: As regards the national broadband plan, this is a €3 billion investment in rural Ireland. It is the biggest investment in rural Ireland ever.

‘It is now well under way. I have met NBI. We are exploring the possibility of accelerating the plan. It can only be done so fast. It will be approximately 100,000 homes, farms and businesses every year.

‘If it can be done faster, it will, but it can only be done so fast.

My meeting with NBI went quite well and we explored the kind of things that might be done to speed up the process’.

Buzzards are our regular patients especially as we have a high population here in Co Louth but we also deal with Kestrels, Sparrowhawks, Peregrine Falcons to name but a few. “Our birds

come to us for many reasons, they might have been attacked, poisoned or found weak maybe from collisions so each case requires its own separate assessment and treatment plan.

“Some might need a week to recuperate while others might need time for feathers to regrow which takes that bit longer or a medication course to be completed.” The statement continues: “There has been an increase in public awareness for our Wildlife which while this

is encouraging it also means that our resources have to be stretched.

“We decided we needed to increase our holding capacity and have designed a new enclosure to help us out.

“This will offer space for soft release where we can place our birds to build their strength to fly high once again.”

“It is quite clear to see that the benefits that were supposed to be delivered by the Good Friday Agreement were not received. Politics succeeded 23 years ago when through dialogue the Good Friday Agreement was reached.

“However, do we now see the consequences of failed politics? Not listening to their communities, not helping their communities, blaming each other’s communities for each other’s problems and not moving forward in the best interests of all the children.

“The most shocking part of the rioting over the past week is the fact that they are children.

As a mother it is heartbreaking to see young people so full of anger that they are brought to this point.

“Could the violent actions of these children really be caused by concerns of a flag, identity or the protocol? Yes, some Unionists and Loyalists are aggrieved by the Protocol, however don’t tell me a 12-year-old child is really concerned with unfettered trade with the UK. “Let’s look after these children. Let’s raise them up and let’s listen to them. Let’s reassure them that whatever tradition they come from they have a safe place to express that in this country.

It is a lesson for all of us.

“By ignoring the marginalised or those who feel marginalised, we give rise to discontent. This clear discon-

tent is the result of generations of ingrained mistrust and generations of political leaders blaming the other side for the problems.

It is led to the rise of these extreme actions.

“It is so incredibly sad to see children being applauded by adults on the streets. Putting bus drivers lives at risk, putting their own lives at risk and their futures in jeopardy. Maybe the reason they are putting their futures in jeopardy is because they see no future?

“So what can we do

to make sure that these young people feel like they have a future? We can start reassuring and listening. Creating futures and creating opportunities, creating trust. This country has failed to do this for these young people.

“In these areas, there are very low levels of educational attainment and high unemployment. This is a failure of the political situation in the North where you have political leaders constantly in a tit for tat war against each other. Trying to score

points from the horrible past and forgetting what matters and who matters; the future generations, not the dead generations.

“Of course, respect the past and remember it, honour it. But we must accept the things we cannot change and have the courage to change the things we can - we have the ability to change the future.

“Our children and their futures are at risk. We need to be very clear about what is going on here. To say this is all about the

Peter Fitzpatrick voices concerns over vaccine roll out programme Dundalk Leader 14th April 2021

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has raised major concerns in the Dáil with regards to the vaccine roll out programme.

In particular he is worried how far ahead Northern Ireland have raced ahead of the republic with regards to the vaccine roll out programme and he has concerns of what lies ahead should retail be open up north and closed south of the border.

“I again wish to raise the issue of the Covid-19 vaccination programme. I do so because, like so many colleagues in this House, I have been inundated with calls from constituents who are deeply concerned about the roll-out programme.

As things stand, the North will, in effect, be leaving lockdown at some stage in June, just like other parts of the UK. I have very real concerns that the North has raced ahead of us in the fight against Covid.

I stated from the start that we should have taken an all-island

Peter Fitzpatrick, TD. approach to this pandemic. If the North continues at its current pace and reopens fully in June, we in the South will face some very difficult times. One can imagine the chaos if all re-

tail is fully reopened in Newry while we in Dundalk remain in lockdown. This will cause a lot of businesses along the Border to close. Those business owners have sacrificed a great deal in fighting the coronavirus and they must be fully supported.

We simply cannot allow a situation whereby one part of the island is open and another part is, in effect, closed.

“The North will be fully open before the end of June. What plans has the Government in place to ensure the South can keep up with the North in terms of the reopening of society? Can the Tánaiste confirm that teachers, SNAs and members of the Garda are no longer deemed to be priority groups for receiving vaccination? Can he also confirm that changes to the vaccination roll-out programme are the result of new advice and, if so, why has the advice changed and what was the basis for this change in approach?

In response An Tanáiste Leo Varadkar insisted that Ireland are catching up on the north with one million doses expected to be administered in for each of the next three months.

“We will catch up and we are catching up. As I mentioned earlier, we are now much more confident about supplies, and supplies are firming up. More than 1.1 million doses have already arrived in the country.

Once they get here, most are in people’s arms within three days and almost all within seven days.

Over 800,000 vaccines have been given already and 112,000 arrived last night alone. We expect to have up to 1 million doses given by 7 April and to be giving an average of 1 million doses per month in April, May and June. We anticipate that the vast majority of adults, or certainly a clear majority of adults, will have had their first dose or both doses by the end of May, and more than 80% of adults

will have been offered their first dose by the end of June.

“I think it is the case that Britain and Northern Ireland are going to open up faster than here, largely as a consequence of the fact that the vaccine roll-out is happening faster there. However, the difference is going to be a couple of weeks. If one goes to Northern Ireland or England now, one is not going to find restaurants or non-essential retail open. None of those services are open there yet. They are a few weeks ahead of us but not as much as people may think. The Deputy should bear in mind that we are far ahead of other EU countries and most of the world in terms of our vaccine roll-out.

There are 200 countries in the world, 27 in the EU and we are in the top tier when it comes to all of these things.

“In regard to vaccine priority, nobody doubts the essential work and the quality of work that is done by teachers, retail

workers, SNAs, carers and the ten or 20 professions I could mention whom we all respect and whose work has been essential during this pandemic. The reason we have gone to an agebased cohort is that it is the fastest way of doing it. It is also the fairest way of doing it because people in their 50s and 60s are at much higher risk of getting very sick or dying from this virus than people in their 30s and 40s, regardless of their profession. It is based on scientific advice. If the Deputy wants to make a submission to NIAC, if he is sincere about this, he should do so. He should set down which people he thinks should be prioritised, in which order, and then present the evidence that they are more at risk than people in their 50s and 60s,” concluded Varadkar.

In response to An Tánaiste, Deputy Fitzpatrick concluded by saying “I did not make a promise to gardaí and teachers. The Tánaiste made that promise.”

Anglers are custodians of our natural fisheries resource and this leaflet is a short guide for anglers on how they can

minimise the impact their fishing trip can have on the environment. The guide is also a useful checklist for anyone enjoying the outdoors with the Principles being key reminders of how to reduce the effects we have on the natural world. Art About Town: ‘Motion Marks’ €500m shortfall in new car sales

Artist Órlaith Cullinane creates captivating flags depicting a dancer’s movement to be displayed around Dundalk town.

Motion Marks is a new collaborative visual arts project from An Táin Arts Centre’s Off-Site programme between visual artist Órlaith Cullinane and An Táin Arts Centre’s former Dancer in Residence 2020, Fiona Keenan– O’Brien. Órlaith has been drawing dancer Fiona in movement and these images have been painted onto large flags and will fly at Dundalk town centre locations.

The work deals with restrictions, limitations, and boundaries physical and mental - and our movements, freedoms and adaptations within them.

There will also be an accompanying audio track specially composed by Zoë Conway, An Táin Arts Centre’s Trad Musician in Residence, that can be accessed online at each flag. A poster at each location will contain a QR code that you can scan with your

LOUTH Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) is presenting ‘We Sing for the Future’ which showcases composers from Ireland and other parts of the world from April 14-18.

The composers are from a range of traditions and perspectives, united only by their music’s immediacy and urgency.

According to LCMS Founder Eamonn Quinn, the series is very varied so there’s something for everyone.

“The festival is usually held in June but we moved it to April as we are trying to do things before lockdown ends,” he said.

Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2021

Senator John McGahon welcomed the announcement of support for heritage projects in Louth under this year’s Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS).

“This funding will not only support the custodians of these protected and historic structures to maintain their properties, but it will also provide encouragement to heritage and local construction trades who will facilitate these works” Senator McGahon said.

The announcement today will enable custodians and

owners to start planning for the months ahead with all work to be carried out in full compliance with Government/HSE guidance on COVID-19.

The BHIS is one of two built heritage funding schemes run by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in association with the 31 Local Authorities. Through grants of up to €15,000, the BHIS assists owners of heritage structures – including those on the local authorities’ Record of Protected Structures and those in Architectural Con-

servation Areas – to meet their obligations to care for their properties. The scheme is not limited to private dwellings and provides assistance to a wide range of other important heritage structures.

“It is great to see this support and particularly the range of projects that are included.

Such funding helps to safeguard our building heritage and ultimately leads to providing further employment for skills crafted and tradespeople and heritage contractors”. Senator McGahon concluded.

Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General has commented: With dealers still able to operate on a click and deliver basis, new car sales are only marginally back on last year. However, this does not tell the real story. The first quarter of each year is the key selling period for the Irish Motor Industry, and new car sales in Q1 when compared to the same period in pre-COVID 2019 are down 25%, or nearly 16,000 cars. This represents lost revenue to the sector in excess of €500 million and lost taxation to the Exchequer of €170 million. With the lockdown now extended into April, the Industry will struggle to make up this lost business. In this context and in light of dealers’ ability to transact in a low risk outdoor environment, it is vital that we

do re-open at the start of May to allow dealers sell both new and used cars, and to protect local employment. On a more positive note, it is encouraging to see the increases in the sale of Electric Cars and PHEVs despite the restricted trading environment.

New car registrations for March were up 54.3% (9,270) when compared to March 2020 (6,006) but down 44.45% (16,687) on March 2019.

Registrations year to date are down 3.23% (48,188) on 2020 (49,794) and down 24.85% on the same period in 2019 (64,126).

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) today released their official new vehicle statistics. To present a more accu-

rate picture of the new vehicle registrations, it is important to compare registrations totals with the same period in 2019 (pre-COVID) when businesses were fully operational.

Light Commercials vehicles (LCV) are up 110.2% (3,008) compared to March last year (1,431) and down 1.1% (3,042) for the same month in 2019.

Year to date new LCVs are up 22.41% (11,346) on last year (9,269) and up just 2.63% (11,055) on 2019.

HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) registrations are up 11.54% (319) in comparison to March 2020 (286) and 19.03% (268) March 2019. Year to date HGV's are down 2.9% (882) on 2020 (908) and down 0.23% on 2019 (884).

Used car imports for March (5,842) have seen an increase of 25.61% on 2020 (4,651) and a decrease of 34.87% (8,970) on March 2019. Year to date imports are up 5.46% (18,420) on 2020 (17,466) and down 31.35% (26,832) on 2019.

For the month of March 1,046 new electric vehicles were registered compared to 369 in March 2020. So far this year 2,831 new electric cars have been registered in comparison to 1,650 on the same period 2020. Electric Vehicle and Plug-in Hybrids and Hybrids continue to increase their market share, with their combined market share now over 11%. Diesel now accounts for 36.58%, Petrol 32.68%, Hybrid 17.04%, Electric 5.87% and Plug-in Electric Hybrid 5.51%.
