Gardaí are treating an incident in Muirhevnamór as attempted murder after a man was rushed to hospital from smoke inhalation over the weekend.

Dundalk Gardaí are investigating after a man suffered serious injuries following a house fire at Drive One Muirhevnamor.

The man in his 60s was upstairs in his house at around 10:50pm on Saturday evening when he heard a loud bang at the front door. When he went to investigate there was a large fire at his front door. He then ran upstairs and secured himself in an upstairs bedroom before calling the fire brigade for help.

Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and rescued the man who had collapsed on his landing. He was immediately brought to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

Amanda English claims rare black belt Dundalk Leader 13th December 2017

Castlebellingham martial arts expert Amanda English has become just the second female in the country to be awarded a black belt in the highly skilled discipline of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves or another against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground.

Amanda, a forensic scientist, began her BJJ journey ten years ago when she joined Kyuzo gym where she was coached by respected BJJ instructor Barry Oglesby. She quickly developed a passion for the sport and within a couple of years she was awarded her brown belt becoming one of the very few females in the country to do so.

Last month at a special ceremony in the gym Amanda was awarded her black belt by world renowned BJJ legend Robert Drysdale. According to Amanda she was a little taken aback when she was called up to receive the coveted belt.

“I had a feeling that a

couple of the lads in the gym would be receiving their black belts at the ceremony but I wasn’t sure if my name would be called. When Robert called me up I was a little bit shocked but obviously delighted when I heard my name.

“I’ve been doing this ten years now and I really love it. It’s a discipline where you are constantly learning and finding new ways of doing things more efficiently and it is great for both body and mind.

“It just ticks a lot of boxes for me. You also have the self defence aspect which is obviously important as well.

I teach young kids and adults now in the gym which is something I

also love doing,” stated Amanda.

According to Amanda’s coach Barry, Amanda can be considered a trailblazer for her achievements in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

“It takes around a decade to get a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt.

That’s with an average of three or four training sessions a week, plus trips to seminars, training camps abroad, tournaments, and of course the usual gaps in training with work, injury, family matters and so on.

“Add to that the fact that this is a male dominated sport and when Amanda started she was one of only a few women in the whole country

Gardaí described the incident as ‘a wreckless and cowardly act’ and urged anybody who knew anything in relation to the matter to come forward and speak.

Sinn Fein councillor Ruairí O Murchu linked the incident to criminal related activity in the area and called on those involved to desist from putting people’s lives in danger.

“We are dealing with

a scenario here where we have a criminal element in the area who have put a man’s life in danger by setting his house alight. I believe that Gardaí are now treating this incident as attempted murder and they are currently inspecting the scene of the crime where they are looking for evidence. The man was trapped in his house after an object was put through his front door which started a fire. He fled upstairs and suffered very bad smoke inhalation. I believe he is in a serious condition in hospital.

“I would call on any-

body involved in these criminal activities to desist and stop putting people’s lives at risk.

We have had help in this area from gardaí in recent years but we need more of it. I

would ask Gardaí as well as people in the community to come together and try and put a stop to these gangs who are terrorising the area,” stated Ruairi.

Councillor welcomes Greenway extension feasibility study Following Wednesday’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) meeting between Louth County Council (LCC) and Newry, Mourne and Down Council, it was agreed that LCC’s Chief Executive Joan Martin will initiate a feasibility study for the Greenway to be

extended from Carlingford to Greenore.

Sinn Féin Councillor Antóin Watters welcomed the news saying “this will link the Greenway up to the new ferry service.

The existing Greenway from Omeath to Carlingford has been a huge success and the benefits

for local tourism and the promotion of health and well-being is immense.

To date over 53,000 people have used the Greenway and this news is a welcome boost to increase foot fall and will hopefully boost numbers for the new ferry service.”

Good News for Savers and Borrowers at Recent Dundalk Credit Union AGM

he out-going Chairman of Dundalk Credit Union, Tom D’Arcy, told a packed and very successful AGM in the Town Hall on Tuesday 5th December 2017, that “Dundalk Credit Union had a very good year and has maintained its position and reputation as one of the strongest Credit Unions in

the Country. He said he was pleased to be proposing to the meeting to return almost €1.5m to members by way of dividend and loan interest rebate.”

While in his presentation to the AGM, Billy Doyle, CEO said that “Dundalk Credit Union is very much open for lending with 93% of all loan applica-

tions totalling €25m approved during the year. Dundalk Credit Union has ample funds available for lending and we are eager to lend. There is no waiting period for new members to borrow”.

Paddy Donnelly Elected As Chairman At a meeting of the Board of Directors which was held immediately after the AGM

concluded, Paddy Donnelly was elected as the new Chairman of Dundalk Credit Union. Jennette Hardy was elected as Vice-Chairman while Sean McDonald was reelected as Secretary. Speaking after his election Paddy Donnelly said: “It is a great honour and privilege to serve as Chairman of Dundalk Credit Union – an organisation that

has been at the heart of the community of Dundalk and the surrounding areas for so many years. Pupils from Colaiste Rís who welcomed Cian Hamill back to the school

Cian opens students’ eyes to STEM Transition Year students from Coláiste Rís Dundalk were delighted to welcome business volunteer, and past pupil, Cian Hamill back to their school to share his career experience in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) this term.

Ireland to deliver the Smart Futures workshop to three Transition Year classes. The workshop opens students’ eyes to the vast choice of exciting career paths and opportunities in the STEM sector and broadens the reach of the Science Foundation Ireland Smart Futures initiative Irene Lawless, teacher in Coláiste Rís, noted the impact that Cian’s programme had on her students: “Cian’s interactive presentation on Smart Futures led students to explore careers in the

technology industry and to look at possibilities for working with STEM in the future.

The pupils enjoyed Cian’s presentation and participated in a question and answer session at the end. Coláiste Rís would like to thank Cian for taking part in this Junior Achievement programme and for sharing his knowledge and experience with our transition year students.”

Cian reflected on his return to Coláise Rís to inspire the next generation: “I was delighted to get a chance to re-

turn to my old school to share my experiences with their transition year classes. The classes were extremely interactive with a wide variety of interesting questions. I shared many of my very positive experiences and hope that I have given at least some of them food for thought when it comes to a future career in the Tech industry in Ireland.”

Almost 1,500 students took part in the Smart Futures initiative through Junior Achievement Ireland in the last school year.

DkIT researchers take centre stage at European Parliament

Keith Thornbury from the Smooth Muscle Research Centre in Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT), was invited to attend an exhibition and reception in the European Parliament, along with Professor Lorraine Martin from Queen’s University of Belfast (QUB) and Professor John Lockhart from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS).

Banned from driving for two years

A man who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance as banned from the road for two years at Dundalk District Court.

John Kelly (26) of 10 Cuchulainn Tce, Castletown Road, Dundalk, faced charg-

es of no insurance, no licence and failing to produce documents after being stopped by Gardai at Marshes Upper on March 21 this year.

Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that her client was a carer for his uncle which

involves driving him to hospital.

He also had recently started work as a courier and asked to spare his licence.

Judge Coughlan imposed a €300 disqualification and a €300 fine.

St Vincent’s selected as pilot school for Leaving Certificate Computer Science St Vincent’s Secondary School has been selected as one of the 40 pilot schools nationally to be part of the phased introduction of Computer Science as a subject in Leaving Certificate.

Being part of the pilot means that Computer Science will be offered to Fifth Year students in St Vincent’s commencing September 2018.

The staff and students have been preparing for this significant development since 2015.

Coding was introduced on the timetable for all first and TY students in September 2015.

The St Vincent’s First Year Coding curriculum introduces students to the basics of cod-

ing with Scratch and Swift.

In Transition Year students develop these skills further by learning CSS, HTML, programming with BBC Microbits and completing mini physical computing projects such as programming a fan, a stepper or a compass using inventors kits.

Students also have the opportunity to code using iPads and Sphero and Lego Boost robots. In October, St Vincent’s were one of five schools selected from 500 applications

by Google to receive funding as part of EU Code Week.

As part of this initiative TY students led coding workshops for local primary schools and

a total of 467 local primary school students took part in these workshops.

The teachers involved in coding have engaged in continuous professional development over the last number of years and have attended many coding and computer science events with the Computer Education Society in Ireland and in NUI Maynooth.

They have also developed links with the Bridge 21 Programme in Trinity College.

Most recently, they attended an event in Apple Headquarters in Cork where they took part in robotics workshops, App development with Xcode and Swift.

Clem Walsh was the winner of Sunday’s Single Stableford competition when he shot 35pts to pip Club Captain Mickey Coburn by a point.

The five handicapper opened with two pars for two points each before another par at the third yielded three points while a birdie at the fourth was worth four points and brought him to 11pts. He picked up one more three point par at the seventh on his way to turning for home on 22pts.

Walsh kicked for home in style and over the final five holes he notched up three three point birdies at the 10th, 12th and 14th and a three point par at the 12th. His only blemish was a one point bogey at the par three 13th.

That left him on 35pts, a total nobody else managed to match with Coburn (8) taking second on countback from Michael McDermott (17) after shooting 22pts over his final nine holes. McDermott took the Category 3 prize with Jim Dwyer (9) and Derek Teather (13) winning the other categories. Caolan Rafferty returned the Best Gross of the day with a two under par 30pts for the 14 holes.

Creative students get a taste for business

Enterprising senior students from St Brigid’s School got a taste for business when they held a mini companies pop up shop last Thursday from 11am to 2pm selling their local hand-crafted creations in the Long Walk Shopping Centre.

There was a fantastic Christmas festive buzz in the centre and the students were nearly sold out by 2pm. The stu-

dents really enjoyed this piece of work by making their own hand-crafted creations in school and then going out to sell them to the public.

Walk Peer and St. Brigid’s school have continued to work together to help develop senior student’s Employability and Entrepreneurial skills and maximise their career prospects by getting into work or starting their own businesses.

In keeping with their continuing support for both International and Local Community based projects, the Rotary Club of Dundalk are again opening their Remembrance Tree on Earl Street from Friday December 15 through to Christmas Eve on Sunday December 24.

There is no charge or cost associated with creating and attaching remembrance ribbons but voluntary contributions are invited from members of the public with all funds raised going to locally based voluntary organisations and charities and designated International

humanitarian projects.

This year, ribbons will also be distributed at the LongWalk Shopping Centre on Saturday 16th. December and the Tree will remain open in Earl Street and manned by Rotarians and friends from 11am through to 5pm each day until Christmas Eve on Sunday December 24.

Remembrance ribbons will remain attached to the Tree over the Christmas period prior to their removal and incineration following a Thanksgiving Service to be arranged early in January.

The show opens in An Tain Arts Centre (Town Hall Dundalk) on Tuesday 9th of January 2018 until Sunday 14th at 8pm nightly with matinees on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th at 2.30pm.

Featuring an all singing, all dancing chorus of one hundred local children and young adults, whose spectacular routines and dazzling costumes are sure to enchant the young and the young at heart. Aurora lives a sheltered life cared for by her adoring Nanny Lola played by the legendary Nicky McCourt who celebrates 26 consecutive years as Dame. The Kingdom of Merryville is ruled by the hilarious but hapless King Anto played by Patrick Browne who makes his return to the stage this year, joined by the court jester James Brennan who takes on the role of the comical Tickles.

Of course every panto needs a romantic lead and our principal boy this year is played by Lucy Reidy who has come through the ranks of the society to take on the role of the dashing Prince Charming. To balance things out of course, no panto would be complete without some Baddies, the formidable duo of Laura McKinley and Alan Doherty are sure to evoke plenty of booing and hissing from the audience as evil Magnificent and her son the all singing, all dancing Rupert.

Adding that touch of magic and sparkle to our story is the delightful Fairy played by the very talented Karyn McCooey, while panto regulars Oliver Hanratty and Jason Kelly as the Palace Guards will keep order and ensure plenty of laughs along the way.

Friday last saw Cuchulainn Cycling Club hold its Christmas Awards Night in The Spirit Store. The night is a celebration of the club’s achievements over the past 12 months and gives special recognition to those working tirelessly behind the scenes.

Club Person of the Year is always one of the most hotly anticipated awards, and this year the club had two such outstanding members that it was jointly awarded to Jason Boyle and Liam Burns.

The Cuchulainn Spirit Award was presented to Veronica Leiva. Veronica’s work, as the women’s rep, has been crucial in growing the membership of

the club. In addition to her work on club rides, she also implemented a number of non cycling related activities that helped to grow the club’s social side.

Winners of the year’s leagues were recognised, with PJ Hynes taking the 9th Wave MTB League ahead of Colin McGeown and John Kane. Niamh McKiverigan was the first lady.

In The Bike Station Summer Cycling League Alan Bingham successfully defended his 2016 win, with Jamie O’Hare in second and John Loane in third.

Michael Treanor was the winner of race 2. The Paddy Neary Perpetual Memorial Trophy was presented, by Mrs Betty Neary, alongside Ray Fedigan of the

Leisure cyclists of the year awards were presented to Tony Richardson and Martin Yore for the men, while Roisin Richardson was the female leisure cyclist of 2017. Clodagh Malone was honored as the most improved female cyclist of the year, with Dale Copas taking the same award for the men. PJ Hynes & Alan Bingham were recognised as the off road & road racing cyclists of the year.

Finally on the night a special award was made to Philip Kerely, a long standing member of the club who has worked tirelessly over the years, in particular in helping to develop underage cycling.

DkIT host Christmas Concert

The students of the BA (Hons) Applied Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology will present their annual Christmas Concert in St Nicholas’ (Green Church) on Thursday December 14 at 7.30pm.

The DkIT Choir, DkIT Chamber Choir and guests promise to be in fine voice as they present an evening of familiar and less-well known festive pieces. The Christmas concert is always one of the highlights of the programme of public performances by Ceol Oirighialla. For music students, public performances such as the annual choral concert are a core element of their learning and they are delighted to share their music with the Dundalk Community in the wonderful setting of St Nicholas’ Church. They are

grateful to Trevor Patterson for allowing us to use this historic venue and encourage all to enjoy the exquisite surroundings and acoustics for the evening’s concert.

As part of the evening’s celebrations, the 2017 recipient of the Michael Van Dessel Choral Conducting Scholar Award Choon Mon Lee, a Year 4 student from Malaysia who is studying on BA (Hons) Applied Music will conduct one of the pieces.

The Michael Van Dessel Choral Conducting Scholar Award is named in recognition of the contribution made by Michael Van Dessel (1899–1974) to music in this region as teacher, choral conductor, performer, organist, pianist, cellist, accompanist and musical director. The music students

at DkIT seek to continue his legacy and are inspired by his life’s work.

The students will also be delighted to present a sum of money to St Patrick’s Soup Kitchen, raised by students on the BA (Hons) Applied Music programme and their collaborators on the recent Hear Our Voices: Space For Everyone project from RehabCare. Paudie Breen, MC of the recent concert of newly composed music at the MacAnna Theatre, DkIT, and a graduate of the Institute will be on hand as we continue our engagement with the community and support worthy causes in our town and region.

Good Deed Mass

St. Patrick’s Scout Group, 1st/2nd/5th Louth scouts will celebrate the Good Deed Mass in St. Nicholas’ Church at 6.30pm on Saturday December 16. Everyone is invited along to the mass and people are asked to bring a non-perishable food item along with them which they can leave at the back of the church, and which will then be taken to the altar during the offertory procession.

Group leader Allan Mathews invited any past member of the Group/Unit along to this Mass, and commented that there would be a glass of mulled wine available after mass in the Northend Bar for anyone who would like to attend afterwards.

Speed cameras supported by majority of motorists

Over 70% of motorists support the continued use of speed cameras in Ireland in order to minimise speeding and reduce fatalities, recent research from AA Ireland has found.

In response to an AA Car Insurance survey of over 6,000 motorists, 46.97% of those polled stated that they strongly support the widespread use of speed cameras as part of efforts to improve road safety.

Meanwhile, a further 31.24% described themselves as somewhat supportive of the use of speed cameras.

The survey also found that a majority of motorists believe speed cameras directly benefit road safety efforts. 74.68% of respondents agreed with the idea that speed cameras played a directly role in improving road safety, with 37.51% strongly agreeing with this message.

“For those of us working in the area of road safety it’s certainly great to see that a strongly majority of motorists remain supportive of the use

of speed cameras and efforts to reduce incidents on Irish roads,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “While there remains a degree of scepticism that the primary point of speed cameras is to generate revenue for the government of private companies involved this simply isn’t true.”

“The costs to government and companies involved in the deployment of speed cameras is significantly higher than the revenue generate from fines, so if it was designed to be a moneymaking system it’s a particularly bad one.

This technology exists to help improve road safety and it’s clear that a strong majority of motorists can see the benefits of using speed cameras.

Despite the support for speed cameras, the AA research also identified some concern on behalf of motorists over the underutilisation of these cameras in Ireland.

When presented with the prompt “I am personally aware

of at least one location where I would recommend that a speed camera be installed,” over a third (34.99%) of motorists stated that they

agreed completely. In additional a further quarter of those surveyed (24.57%) partially agreed with this message.
