Call to begin talk on drugs clinics By Paul Byrne

The solution to the ongoing issue of trying to tackle heroin use and associated problems in Dundalk could be found in a medically supervised injecting centre in town. Given the scale of the drug problem and the risks associated with needles being discarded in an unsafe manner, local councillor, Mark Dearey, believes the idea of a supervised injecting centre should be discussed. The Green Party councillor is aware that there would be a number of challenges to overcome, but feels that the discussion should be opened up. “There is a drug problem in this area and there have been a number of issues with regards needles being dis-

carded in an unsafe manner which is dangerous and an issue that needs to be looked at. When I was chairman of the Dundalk Drugs Action Group, Ana Liffey Drug Project introduced a needle exchange programme in Dundalk and we worked with them in terms of contacts with the using community and the local service providers. This programme has without doubt made a positive difference to the drug problems around the county. “We need to keep on trying to find ways to tackle the issue of heroin users around town and to get them out of the side alleys and try and help them.
