Garda Round Up The church in Brid-aChrin was broken into and ransacked between midnight and 8:45am on March 4.

The burglars gained entry to the sacristy which they ransacked but no cash was taken in the incident.

There was one robbery from the person case this week which occurred in the retail park in Dundalk on March 10. A small amount of cash and a mobile phone was taken from the injured party at approximately 1:30 in the afternoon.

There were two incidents of drugs in Dundalk this week with a man arrested on March 4 at approximately 3:50pm after he was found with a small amount of an illegal substance on his person. A small amount of an illegal substance was also found on the person

of a male just off the Avenue Road on March 9 at 8am.

A group of five teenage males kicked the door of a house in an estate in town causing damage to the lock. Gardaí are currently investigating the incident which occurred at around 10pm on March 8 and have asked witnesses to come forward.

Finally, Dundalk gardaí received a hoax call from a public phone box on March 7 at approximately 12:50pm saying that there was a bomb in the hospital. Armed support units were sent to both Louth County and Our Lady of Lourdes hospitals but they quickly determined the warning was a hoax.

Gardaí are currently reviewing CCTV footage as part of their investigation.

Dundalk Municipal Civic Awards There were fourteen worthy recipients at last week’s Dundalk Municipal District Civic Awards with Dundalk Young Ireland’s GAA Club and Jock McArdle amongst those recognised for their contributions to the local community.

The awards which took place in Louth County Hall are now in their third year and were designed to recognise all those people and groups who have made outstanding contributions to Dundalk and the North Louth area over the years.

The awards are given to re-

cipients in a wide range of backgrounds including sport, art, public service, charity and community groups. The full list of recipients who attended this year’s ceremony are listed below.

same girl was now living in New Zealand where she regularly visited a kindergarden in Auckland called Brownsbay.

During her visits to brownsbay the young girl would regale her fellow classmates with tales of Leprechauns telling them all about Kevin’s magical cavern and showing off the Leprechaun he had given to her.

Sarah Garrod, a teacher in the kindergarden was asked by the children in the nursery if they could send Kevin a letter asking for their own Leprechaun given the fact that New Zealand don’t have any. Below is the letter Kevin received from Sarah and the children in Browns Bay Kindergarden.

“Today from the other side of the world.

Kia Ora Kevin and greetings from New Zealand, We are a Kindergarten (childcare centre) based in Auckland New Zealand and have a lovely four-year-old Irish lass who comes to play with us each day. She has been to visit your Leprechaun Cavern and excitedly told us how you are a Leprechaun whisperer.

She has her own Leprechaun which she takes great care of and showed us your book which she read to some children.

Yesterday she asked if we could write you a letter to ask if you could send us a Leprechaun for our Kindergarten since we do not have any in New Zealand so we went to work at writing you a letter to send.

Now obviously as the post is snail speed

I have decided not to physically post you the letters and you can find them attached to the email.

We are not expecting you to send us a Leprechaun as they need to stay safe in Ireland but wondered if you might send a reply back to the children or something we can download to support this interest.

Hope the winter is being kind to you over there. Nga mihi (Kind regards) Sarah Garrod” According to Kevin he was delighted but not surprised to have received a request for a Leprechaun from the other side of the world.

The letter was lovely and I’m delighted that the humble Leprechaun has piqued interest all the way over in New Zealand. I responded to Sarah immediately and sent her and her

children five books from my self-published series which are full of information about the history, geography and geology of the Cooley mountains as witnessed by the Leprechauns. I hope the children enjoy the books and maybe some day they will visit us in Carlingford and see the Leprechauns for themselves. Since I’ve started doing the tours I’ve had interest from all over the place.

"We actually had a Russian TV crew come over and do a programme on us last year and off the back of that we had a Ukrainian family visit us a couple of weeks ago. My bond with the Leprechauns has enabled me to meet many people from many different places from all walks of life and long may that continue,” stated Kevin.

Exhibition in An Tain

Concerning the Other Exhibition will be hosted at An Táin Arts Centre until April 6.

Currently touring, the exhibition Concerning the Other, is a collaborative art project which brings together ten artists to create a hundred collaborative artworks.

The concept for this project is that in these days of uncertainty, mounting racism and intolerance, artists can take a lead in promoting diversity and showing concern for minorities and for refugees from areas of conflict.

Ten selected artists responded to and took account of each other’s work in a collaborative process which took place over ten weeks in 2017.

The collaborative nature of this project is particularly relevant in these turbulent times and it resulted in surprising and engaging artworks.

Driving With No Insurance Alician Clerkin (20) of 57 Bellingham Green, Castlebellingham, was fined €50 at Dundalk District Court after pleading guilty to a charge of no insurance.

The defendant was stopped by Gardai at Kilsaran on June 18 last year. Judge John Coughlan stated that he would not impose a disqualification.

Thought He Had Insurance A man who thought he had a valid insurance policy was disqualified from driving for two years at Dundalk District Court after being convicted on a no insurance charge.

Michael Muckian (28) of 42 Carrive Rd, Silverbridge, Co Armagh, was stopped

by Gardai at Drumbilla, Kilcurry, on August 5 last year.

Barrister Irene Sands stated that her client had paid for an insurance policy but because he was disqualified the policy was nullified.

Exhibition to honour renowned engineer Peter Rice opens An exhibition honouring the work of Irish born engineer Peter Rice opened in Dundalk County Museum last week. Heidi Rice, daughter of the award-winning engineer, officially launched the exhibition following a screening of An Engineer Imagines, a new documentary about her father and his work.

The new permanent exhibition consists primarily of models and drawings made by 3rd and 4th year architectural technology students at the Dublin School of Architecture, TU Dublin during a 3-week collaborative project entitled Lessons from Peter Rice in 2013. It is now open to the public and some beautiful images from the exhibition can be seen here.

Peter Rice (1935–92), who was born in Dundalk, is widely regarded as one of the world’s most distinguished structural engineers of the late twentieth century. He collaborated with many famous architectural practices on what have now become iconic works of architecture such as the Sydney Opera House, the Centre Pompidou, Lloyds of London and Kansai Airport.

Rice was held in high esteem by

his contemporaries in both the engineering and architectural professions and he demonstrated the best aspects of collaborative work. His innovations in materials and design greatly advanced the nature of modern architectureas he pushed the boundaries of materials and instability.

Jim Roche, Lecturer in the TU Dublin School of Architecture said: “What is remarkable about this exhibition is that most of the work was done by 3rd and 4th year architectural technology students who interpreted the creative working process of the engineer Peter Rice as part of a pedagogic project that analysed eleven buildings on which he had worked. This was completed over a 3-week period in 2013 after which the models and drawings were exhibited in the NCAD Thomas Street Gallery in Dublin. The quality of the students’ work was so impressive that we made strenuous efforts to preserve it and we subsequently opened a dialogue with Brian Walsh at the County Museum Dundalk which ultimately resulted in the models and drawings finding a permanent home.”

Dundalk Youth Centre is located in the heart of our town, looking after our young people. The vision of Dundalk Youth Centre is to create a supportive social space where young people in our community are welcomed and valued.

Dundalk Youth Centre has a full range of facilities dedicated to helping young people work, relax and play in a safe and supervised environment.

The Youth Centre has a vibrant and welcoming Youth Café, a wide range of creative workshops, training and leadership development courses, a long-established Peer Education Drugs Awareness Programme, and dedicated performance, mediation and art spaces.

Not confined to the four walls, a welltended and inviting garden is a much used and fun space when the Irish weather lets the sunshine through.

Dundalk Youth Centre also offers professional counselling, information support services and creative therapies that can help young people deal with such things as loss and addiction.

S.N.A.P. was initially set up after a group of parents enquired about organising swimming lessons for children with Special Needs back in June 2004. The H.S.E. funded two swimming programmes and they proved extremely popular and successful.

From this beginning, the parents recognised the need and strength of coming together regularly to explore new ideas and begin to fundraise to finance their ideas. S.N.A.P. is now a thriving, vibrant and proactive support group that has grown steadily over the last 15 years.

Activities have fun as their focus, Lego Club, Music Therapy, Speech & Drama, Multi Activity Summer Holiday Camps, Cinema Visits being just a sample of what S.N.A.P. offer. The

safe and secure, a place to express, just to be and find their voice.”

Cultural diversity at Grammar Dundalk Grammar School will hold their second Annual Celebration of Culture Day on Thursday March 14 from 11am until 3pm.

St Oliver’s 5K Registration is underway for the annual Friends of St Oliver’s 5K run and walk, supported by Dundalk Credit Union, which takes place on Saturday March 23.

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach has said that despite receiving assurances last month from the Minister that six additional staff had been approved to be deployed to the Monaghan and Castleblayney ambulance stations, the situation is no better, and staff are working in chaotic conditions.

“I raised the matter at the end of last month when I was made aware of a situation whereby

staff were unable to respond to calls due to a lack of staff and a lack of vehicles being available.

Stations affected include those in Drogheda, Ardee, Virginia, Monaghan, Castleblayney and Dundalk,” he stated.

“The situation is still no better despite the assurances given that extra staff had been approved. Yesterday five ambulances in the fleet serving the region were not operational, and two ambulances had to be

deployed from Dublin to service both Drogheda and Dundalk last night.

“This is a gravely serious situation and I will be calling on the Minister to immediately resolve this issue. It is unfair both to the staff trying to cope with a lack of resources and unfair to the public who need to feel assured that there is a speedy and efficient emergency ambulance service in the region,” added Deputy Breathnach.

Taoiseach views social housing project in Dundalk

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar visited Dundalk last week to check on the progress on Tuath’s social housing development.

The Darkness into Light event will take place on Saturday May 11.

This unique, early morning experience which begins in darkness at 4.15am will see thousands of people walk or run a 5km route while dawn is breaking. The early dawn represents hope and is symbolic of the work of Pieta House; bringing people from darkness back into the light.

In 2018, over 3,800 people took part in Dundalk raising over €102,000. DKIT will again host its very own

Darkness into Light for the third time in 2019. This will build on the huge success of our first two years. Speaking at the launch of registration website, Event Director for Dundalk, Seán Kelly, said “Darkness Into Light is a people’s event organised by local volunteer committees all over the country and it’s a fantastic opportunity to raise much needed funds for an issue that affects so many lives especially here in Dundalk and North Louth. While suicide is a devastating tragedy,

we must not forget that there is hope, there is help, and Pieta House will be there to provide both.”

Louth Tidy Towns Together, the network of Tidy Towns groups in County Louth, is asking all candidates in the forthcoming local and European elections not to erect posters within the core areas of 13 towns and villages in the county who have opted to participate in the initiative.

A significant number of towns, villages and municipal districts throughout Ireland, including Louth, have successfully implemented initiatives in recent years during elections and referenda to

maintain poster-free environments within their localities.

Thirteen Louth Tidy Towns Together member groups now wish to be part of this growing national movement and are requesting a voluntary commitment from all candidates, should they be planning a postering campaign, not to erect posters within the 50km/h speed limits of, nor at landscaped approaches to, their respective towns and villages.

They have already emailed all 29 current Louth County

councillors and the main political parties seeking this voluntary commitment.

Larry Magnier, chairperson of Louth Tidy Towns Together said this commitment would help enormously in supporting hard-working Tidy Towns volunteers in their efforts to present their areas in the most aesthetically pleasing and environmentally sustainable manner possible all year round. “Managing scarce resources is a key challenge for all of us, and everybody is aware of the increasing

emphasis on waste prevention and specifically the move away from single use plastics from which posters are made.

Furthermore the cost of any postering campaign needs to be considered in terms of value for money and effectiveness given the alternative social media and other communication options that are available nowadays, but this, of course, is a matter for each candidate to decide.

Call to support Daffodil Day Former RTE newsreader Aengus MacGrianna is urging businesses in Louth to support cancer patients and their families by getting behind the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day on Friday, March 22, to ensure as many patients as possible receive the help and support they need this year.

Community spirit on show in Lordship

By Paul Byrne A school in Lordship which had its polytunnel destroyed by vandals have praised the local community for coming together and getting the greenhouse fixed.

Three weeks ago during the mid-term break vandals entered Rampark N.S school and destroyed the school’s new polytunnel which was only put in at the beginning of the school year. Deputy Principal Julie Carolan arrived back at school following the midterm break to find the polytunnel had been completely damaged by vandals. A statement released by the school in the aftermath of the discovery revealed their shock and sadness that they had been targeted by vandals.

“It is with a heavy heart we share this post. We were deeply saddened to return to school after midterm to see the devastating destruction of our polytunnel. We are shocked & disappointed that someone would do this to our property.”

According to school principal Joan O’Hanlon the school were contacted almost immediately by people from all over the community with offers of help.

“We also had past pupils of the school come in to actually restore the tents back to working order and I have to say it was really heart-warming to see such strong community spirit in action. The covering of the new polytunnel is now complete and myself and everybody at the school are very grateful for all the help we received. We are raring to go now and the children can’t wait to start planting. I would like to thank my deputy principal Julie Carolan as well who did lots of work on this issue,” stated Joan.

Rita Treanor (47) of Apartment 6, Main St, Omeath, was fined €50 after pleading guilty to a no insurance charge at Dundalk District Court.

The defendant was stopped on the Ecco Road, Dundalk, on May 18 last year. Judge John Coughlan stated that he would not impose a disqualification.

MS Meeting

The MS Louth Branch are having their annual general meeting on Tuesday March 19 in the O’Connells clubrooms, Castlebellingham at 7.30pm.

Crashed after he had taken a few drinks A man who told Gardai that he had taken “a few drinks” and crashed his car escaped a conviction on a technicality at Dundalk District Court.

Dean McGuinness (30) of Beau Vista, Stoney Lane, Ardee, was found to be over the limit for driving after being stopped by Gardai at the Ardee Road on June 15, 2017.

However, the defence barrister argued that the investigating Garda did not state in his evidence that he had explained the reason for the arrest in ordinary language. He pointed out that this was an essential part of the case.

The Garda stated that it would be normal practice to explain the reason but the barrister argued that it was essential to make this clear in evidence. The Garda Inspector stated that the defendant was aware of why he was being arrested and had told Gardai that he had taken a few drinks.

However, Judge John Coughlan stated that in the circumstances he was dismissing the charge.

The court had heard that Gardai had seen Mr McGuinness driving erratically at The Crescent, Dundalk, and when they followed they saw the defendant pulling into a forecourt on the Ardee Road. There was damage to the front of the car and a puncture on the front right.

When the spoke to the driver he apologised and stated the he had taken a few drinks and hit a kerb.

DkIT claim education award for a second successive year

The MBS in Entrepreneurship & Marketing at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has been awarded an Education Award 2019 for Best International Collaboration Project. This is the second year that the programme has received this award and last year it was also awarded the prize for Best Academic Partnership.

The one-year full-time MBS programme has been recognised for its innovative international partnership between DkIT and Heilbronn University in Germany.

The ‘hands-on’ postgraduate programme has been designed to enhance learners’ understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation in practice.

In addition to its unique Irish-German collaborative teaching delivery, the MBS also includes an international strategy residential session, live industry-based student projects and student exchange opportunities.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) BA in Culinary Arts students were once again at the top of the pile this week at the Chef Ireland Culinary Championships at CATEX. As part of CATEX, the hospitality industry’s leading showcase, the students took part in a range of competitions held over three days, from February 26 to 28. These competitions offered the students a chance to showcase their crea-

tivity while competing against their peers from other colleges and also professional industry chefs, cooking in front of a live audience under the clock.

The culinary team of First Year students competed from early morning each day. Van Phuoc Le from Vietnam and Ryan Dowling from Shercock, Co. Cavan set the standard in the first competition of the week claiming Gold and Best in Class.

The Larder competition was the chef’s first cooking competition and was a fantastic result, competing against seasoned chefs from around the country.

From Navan, Co. Meath, Conor Farrell’s passion lies in the art of pastry and he showcased his skills expertly in being awarded silver and Best in Class in the Sacher Torte Competition and also won bronze in the soufflé competition, creating a

beautiful chocolate and orange soufflé.

Speaking about their success, BA in Culinary Arts Programme Director Alan McCabe commented: “We are all extremely proud of the students.

They invested a lot of time in preparing for the competitions and it’s great to see them do so well.

“They are a credit to their families and have bright futures ahead of them.”

St Patrick’s Day event this weekend The organisers of the St Patrick’s Day event in Dundalk on Sunday are urging people to come along to the Market Square to support the great local acts who are performing.

Chairperson of the new organising committee, Cllr. Conor Keelan said he wanted families to make the most of the afternoon, which will feature musicians, dancers, performers and a Pelican kids’ zone at the square.

Cllr. Keelan, who is on the committee with fellow Dundalk councillors Maeve Yore, Ruairí Ó Murchú and Anne Campbell, said: ‘The past few weeks have been hectic, but it has been an honour to work with all the people on the committee which was

set up at short notice.

‘We were determined that Dundalk would have a St Patrick’s Day event and while there is no parade, there is plenty to attract people into the Market Square for what promises to be a great, funfilled day with lots to keep everyone entertained’.

The committee, which also includes Elaine McGeough manager of the Long Walk Shopping Centre; former Dundalk councillor Kevin Meenan; Maria O’Toole from PayPal, Kayleigh Mulligan from the Louth Volunteer Centre and Shane McBride from Pelican, was set up at the end of January.

Cllr. Keelan said: ‘Everyone has worked really hard to ensure this event goes ahead. There has

been a great response from the acts who came forward to take part and from businesses who have come forward with sponsorship.

At a stage to be erected at the Courthouse Square, there will be performances by top Dundalk acts such as Long Time Coming, Krystal Ice, the McGee Dance School, Faoi Gasa and Orwells 84.

The Cuchulainn Celtic Strings, Kobra Khan and Dundalk Brass Band will entertain at a mini stage on Earl Street and there will be a Pelican Kids’ Zone at the Market Square. Access to the area is by wristbands, which can be purchased in advance at Stitchcraft, Earl Street. The cost is €6 or €20 for four.

Louth Sinn Féin Councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú has raised the issue of intimidation of families across Louth by drugs gangs at Tuesday evenings’ Joint Policing Committee meeting in Dundalk.

Councillor Ó Murchú said: “Over the past 12 months myself, Deputy Gerry Adams and other Sinn Féin councillors have received an increased number of reports of intimidation by drug dealers and their gangs.

“Drug dealers are no longer attributing debts only to those who accrue the debt but also to their family members.

“I am aware of one family in Louth who over the space of 6 months paid criminals a total of

€3,700 for debts their son allegedly owed.

“However the gang was not content and in November demanded another €6,500.

“The family refused and a few weeks later their house was attacked.

“Just this week I learned that a local man paid off a drug debt of €40,000 due to intimidation of his daughter.

“In a number of other cases family homes have been attacked with pipe bombs and petrol bombs, vehicles burned out and multiple threats of violence issued. “I commend the gardaí for their efforts in these cases and the increased level of importance

which they are placing on this issue which is resulting in greater numbers of arrests for drug related crimes.

“I welcome the establishment of Dundalk Drugs and Crime Unit which is now up and running with three extra staff along with another five person unit in Drogheda.

“However there are no doubt many more cases which I am unaware of and which remain unreported and I encourage victims to report this type of crime.

“I, along with Deputy Gerry Adams, will continue to lobby for additional funding to be provided to Louth Gardaí to combat this very real and dangerous threat,” he stated.

Nevin Maguire Leads Industry Seminar at DkIT. Management students at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) today hosted an industry seminar ‘Succeeding in Business – advice from industry experts’, with speakers including award-winning restauranteur and media personality Neven Maguire, and Madeline Riley, General Manager of The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel on Golden Lane in Dublin City Centre.

Part of their final year ‘event execution’ module, the seminar provided the setting for the students to deliver a successful event, in order to demonstrate proficiency in planning, organisational and promotional skills.

The industry speakers each gave a talk on their experiences throughout their careers, CV & interview tips and advice on how they balance their personal life with their hectic careers. Neven Maguire, shared his experience as one of Ireland’s most famous chefs and known for his incredible

Countdown to Croke Park begins for Louth’s most enterprising students The Local Enterprise Office Louth has confirmed that winning teenage entrepreneurs from Dundalk and Drogheda, will represent Ireland at National Final of Student Enterprise Programme Eleven teenage entrepreneurs from three local schools have won a place representing Louth at the Student Enterprise Programme National Finals in Croke Park on Friday, May 3.

Every September through Local Enterprise Office Louth, entrepreneurial secondary school students begin their business journey as they are encouraged to research, set-up and run their own real-world businesses.

The enterprise education initiative, funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local

authorities, is the most successful student enterprise programme of its kind in the country. An estimated 26,000 students from 490 schools around the country begin their entrepreneurial journey every year with the help of their teachers, student enterprise coordinators and Local Enterprise Office.

The students were all competing at the Louth Final on March 5, which was held at the Carrickdale Hotel. An estimated 1100 students from 17 schools took part in the annual programme locally.

In the Senior Category of the competition, Louth will be represented on May 3 by Alanna Tinnelly, Amy Ward, Ciara Sharkey, Fausta Razmaite and Sarah White from The Bin Bungee at Coláiste Rís, Dundalk.

No insurance guilty plea

A man who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance was banned from driving for four years at Dundalk District Court.

Conor Stokes (23) of 38 Slieve Foy Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was also given 240 hours Community Service in lieu of five months in prison.

Judge John Coughlan heard that the defendant was stopped by Gardai at 38 Slieve Foy Park on August 13, 2017.

The judge also took related matters into account.

Avoided driving ban

Alan Byrne (47) of 4 An Cearnog, Dundalk, was fined €50 at Dundalk District Court when he pleaded guilty to driving without insurance after being stopped by Gardai at Castletown Road on May 23 last year.

Castletown Belles are about to embark on their fourth season and are currently hard at work in pre-season ahead of the new campaign which begins later this month. The club is the only all ladies soccer team in Dundalk and they play their games in the Dublin Women’s Soccer League (DWSL).

This year the club is expanding and will introduce three new underage teams at under 7, under 9 and under 11 with all teams playing in the new Louth School Girls League which will begin shortly. According to committee mem-

“We’ve been on the go now a few seasons and we are looking forward to beginning a new campaign in the Dublin Women’s Soccer League. I feel we’ve been improving each

year and last year we did particularly well to finish in midtable given the fact we were short on numbers throughout the season. There were games where we travelled to Dublin for

games with only ten players and I feel we would have been in contention for promotion if we had a few more bodies in the squad.

“This year there are a few changes in the club

with the introduction of three underage groups which is something we haven’t had before. All our underage coaches are female and we have teams at U7, 9 and U11 level. We are inviting girls for all our underage groups as well as our senior team to come down to the Bainseach Field in Fatima to see what we’re about and maybe join our team.

We are about to undergo an intensive two-week pre-season programme.

We’re calling it ‘Belles of Steel’ and it is going to be a pretty intensive two weeks of training designed to get the girls ready for the new season. Janine Pepper and my dad Niall are going

to be running the senior team and we are hopeful that we can improve again this year,” stated Andrew.

“We feel it is important to offer girls a chance to play football and we are delighted that we are going to be a part of the Louth School Girls League at underage level this season. As I said we have teams at U7,9 and U 11 level so if you know anybody who would like to be part of a team contact us here at Castletown Belles and we will get you signed up,” added Andrew.

St Louis Secondary School attends the EU Parliament in Strasbourg St Louis Secondary School Dundalk recently represented Ireland at the Euroscola Event which is held in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The students won the trip by making a video of what they felt was important to them if they were elected as a Member of the European Parliament.

Euroscola is an annual event which offers students aged 16-18 an immersive experience in the debating Chamber of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, allowing them to learn about European integration by experiencing it first-hand.

Over 600 Students from the 28 EU Member States get the chance to become Members of the
