Dundalk is set to benefit from a new initiative which aims to attract multi-national companies to the region.

Foreign direct investment will be targeted as part of a new cross border initiative which highlights the enormous advantages of the M1 corridor. The M1 East Coast Corridor connects Ireland’s two largest cities, Dublin and Belfast, with the two largest towns, Dundalk and Drogheda at its centre.

The Minister for

Planning, Housing and Local Government Eoghan Murphy TD launched the M1 Corridor Project in Bellingham Castle, on Monday morning amid much fanfare. The Project is a business-led initiative driven by local business groups, led by Dundalk Chamber, Drogheda & District Chamber, and The Mill Enterprise Hub and Oriel Hub Enterprise Centre.

Louth nurses back to work after strike called off

Louth nurses have returned to work after a proposed three day strike was suspended on Monday evening following an intervention by the Labour Court.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation announced that the three day strike would not be going ahead following progress at their latest meeting with government officials.

In a statement, the union said: “The INMO’s elected Executive Council have just received the recommendation by the Labour Court. Speaking at the launch, Paddy Malone of Dundalk Chamber said; ‘’the M1 Corridor Project has been carefully developed by local business groups on both sides of the border for over ten years and will bring new investment and jobs into the Drogheda-Dundalk-Newry region. Our critical objective is to highlight the huge advantages of the region in comparison to Dublin or Belfast as a location for investment. The North East region has been comparably neglected and has relied on indigenous business for development.

“For countless years, there has been far too much emphasis placed on Dublin and this has backfired in terms of spiralling housing, commercial property and wage costs for firms moving to Ireland.

The M1 corridor is close to Dublin but also highly cost competitive and will be of critical strategic importance to the all-island economy in the decades ahead,” he explained.

Finishes touches being put to St Patrick’s Day event Plans for events in Dundalk town centre for St Patrick’s Day are continuing with the new committee set up to organise this year’s event getting ready to announce the programme later this week.

Conor Keelan, said he is pleased with the progress that is being made, despite the time constraints.

He said: ‘Despite the short lead-in time, there has been a lot of work done by the committee so far and those involved are committed to ensuring that there is a good programme of events for families to enjoy on the day, from 2pm to 5pm in and around the Market Square.

‘We are putting the finishing touches to the event programme and we hope to formally announce what’s happening later this week so that everyone knows what to expect for March 17 in Dundalk’.

The St. Vincent’s debating and public speaking team are set to bring their rhetorical prowess to the stage yet again with their forthcoming performance in the Leinster final of the Knights of St Columbanus public speaking competition. The culmination of several months hard work, the girls clinched their place at the event in Dublin after a rousing speech on the abolition of the death penalty. Under the guidance of their teacher Victoria O’Hagan, Leah O’Shaughnessy, Gillian Fearon and Doireann Minford hope that their powerful message calling for the execution of justice, not people, will see them bring home the gold!

Indeed this is the second time this year that St. Vincent’s have reached such lofty heights, with Emma Connolly being selected from hundreds

Adding to an impressive haul of awards that over the years have included several national titles in the European Commission Soap Box competition, the Action Aid public speaking competition and three natoinal Debating Science awards, this year St. Vincent’s have also seen Queensley Odidi take home the Soroptimist perpetual trophy for excellence in communication and public speaking. On the forthcoming final in which the students demonstrate how they have found a language for their faith, Victoria added ‘The girls have worked tirelessly in their preparation on this complex and emotive topic and I want to wish them the very best of luck in the final.’

Local athletes excel in Special Olympics bowling event Dundalk Special Olympics Club would like to congratulate two of our Athletes who participated in Special Olympics Bowling Event in the Kbowl in Naas last Tuesday the 29th of January 2019.

On Saturday the 6th April 2019 there will be a National Celebration at the "Our Lady of Knock Shrine", Knock, Co.Mayo to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the death of St. John Baptist de La Salle, his life and his Mission.

This is a once in a life time opportunity for the Lasallian community to join together in celebration. It is the first time an event like this has taken place in Ireland and will coinside similar events taking place all round the world this year.

A Relic of St. La Salle will be available for veneration in the Basilica, displays from each Lasallian School will be exhibited, choirs, singers and musicians from schools around the country will perform and mass will be celebrated followed by a Remembrance ceremony.

Tomi Reichental, holocaust survivor talks to DkIT students

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) welcomed Holocaust Survivor, Tomi Reichental to campus this week to meet with students and staff and discuss his experience in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during World War 2. The visit was organised by the School of Informatics & Creative Arts and included students form the BA (Hons) in Film and Television Production who are exploring how Holocaust memory is mediated over time and are analysing the mechanisms at play between film, collective memory and historical representation.

Tomi is one of three survivors of the Holocaust residing in Ireland and is renowned for his talks about his wartime experiences. He has spoken extensively about atrocities committed during the Holocaust including his book ‘I Was a Boy in Belsen ‘and three documentaries; Close To Evil, ‘Til the Tenth Generation and “Condemned to Re-

member”. Tomi is currently in the process of writing his second book.

During his lecture, Tomi spoke about why he feels it is important to speak to young people on the atrocities that he survived.

“I see the world today and I can draw similarities to the events of the 30’s and 40’s. There I see the struggles that refugees are going through today and it is comparable to that of what happened when the Jewish people tried to seek refuge in foreign countries

during the Holocaust.

We must remember to never become the bystander”.Organiser and lecturer in the Department of Creative Arts, Media and Music, Dr. Ingrid Lewis noted, “It was an honour to welcome Tomi to our campus today and there was huge interest from students and staff across the college with more than 200 students and staff in attendance. The Holocaust is considered as an educational imperative that encourages young people to

explore the complexities of the past and to construct meaning from this watershed event. Tomi definitely captivated our students today and I am certain that his words will resonate with them for years to come.”

Third year Film and TV production student Martin Brady was in the audience and shared his thoughts on his experience. He added, “When I shook Tomi’s hand afterwards I really had no words, no way of conveying how much his experience had touched me. We are among the last generations that will be able to talk to a holocaust survivor so it meant a lot to have this privilege. What struck me most was Tomi’s insistence that we do not see the Holocaust simply as a tragic event. It can also be a powerful educational tool to ensure that such an event never happens again.”

Amy becomes golden girl champion

Dundalk’s Golden Girl Amy Broadhurst enjoyed more success last weekend when she tasted success at a major boxing tournament in Sweden.

Amy took the gold medal home at the Golden Girl tournament in Boras, Sweden following an outstanding victory over the two times Russian elite champion and former European Elite gold medallist Aleksandra Ordina.

The competition is considered one of the most prestigious in world boxing for amateur fighters and features all of the European and world medallists from recent tournaments. Amy who was fighting under the banner of Islington Boxing Club, which is where she trains when not in Dundalk, took on home

favourite Linda Larsson in her semi-final winning on a deserved 4-1 split decision scoreline In the final she took on the vastly experienced 31-year old two-time Russian elite

champion and former European Gold medallist Aleksander Ordina.

The 21-year old Dundalk southpaw put in a dominant performance to win every round to become the Swedish

Golden Girl champion for 2019 in the 64kg division.

Amy who recently won her 16th national title in the National Stadium has made a name for herself as one of the brightest young talents in the country and will now have her sights focused on the upcoming European Boxing Championships which are being held in Russia next month. After her latest success Amy was understandably delighted with the level of her performance.

“Golden Girl Champion for 2019! Wow! Today I got in with the European Elite champion and won a unanimous decision,” stated Amy. “I couldn’t be any happier as today was a big test for me. Today I proved that I am up there with the best and I’m ready for whatever comes my way this year,”

Cllr Yore welcomes Minister Moran to town

Councillor Maeve Yore welcomed Independent Alliance Colleague Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran to Louth last week where he met concerned residents who are worried about flooding in their communities.

Following on from Minister Moran’s visit in July where he announced €70million euro to CFRAM Programmes in Dundalk, Blackrock South, Carlingford, Greenore, Ardee and Baltray he came to get an update and check progress from a county wide steering committee who have met three times since August 2018. Whilst in Dundalk he also announced €92k funding under the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme - €76,500 for Salterstown Annagassan and €16,200 for Seabank Castlebellingham. Councillor Yore accompanied the Minister to these areas and he also met concerned residents at Shore Road and Mounthamilton Ardee Rd Dundalk.

Yore asked Minister Moran to consider extending and including Greenways in the county while

Flood Relief Works were being undertaken. The Minister stated that the important thing is to have plans designed and ready as there are funding schemes available through different government departments and the Office of Public Works (OPW) will work with all - including local authorities - to ensure a cohesive approach.

While in Louth, Councillor Yore invited Minister Moran and OPW Officials to Faughart Graveyard where they were given a comprehensive and detailed history of the area. She said Faughart Graveyard has such huge historical and tourism potential and its important that ownership of this sacred site is established and heritage preserved. Again the Minister advised the OPW would help in any way they could and he will keep Councillor Yore informed of any progress.

The visit to Louth ended with Councillor Yore saying “Boxer Moran is my sort of politician - he gets things done and cares about people - thats what politics and politicians should be about and I look forward to working with Boxer to benefit all the people of Louth that I represent”

Transition year students in De La Salle doing enterprise have begun selling their goods and services to students inside school. Many of the newly formed mini companies have come up with innovative and brand new ideas that have never been sold inside the school before, such as the Rommel pod, which is designed to prevent the wires from your earphones getting tangled.

Jonah Phelan a member of the Rommel team said he was “delighted with the feedback we have gotten so far on the Rommel”. Another company which has seen early success is ‘Nonstop Clothing’ which sells customised hoodies for staff, TYs, 6th year graduates and any student interested in a customised hoodie. Conor Mackin from the

group said “We have been surprised at how well the mini companies in the school have been doing and we are very happy with how our hoodies are selling”. Another company doing very well from the school is ‘Clean Catch’ who sell personally customised Gaelic gloves with initials, your clubs crest and your own choice of colour As well as these companies there are many more unprecedented and exciting businesses making waves in the school.

Enterprise teachers in the school, Mr O’Connor and Mr McCardle have been delighted with the production and enthusiasm from students in their enterprise classes this year stating that this has been one of the most successful years for the enterprise program in the school, which runs exclusively for transition years.

Blackrock St Patrick’s Day Parade committee looking for support Blackrock Tourism & Development Group have been organising Blackrock St. Patrick’s Day Parade for the last few years which has been growing from strength to strength.

The event has become one of the most popular parades in the county and we have continued to work with Louth County Council and the Gardai to ensure that the event is enjoyable, safe and compliant with the regulations from local authorities. This requires a good deal of documentation, forward planning, stewarding and financial costs to cover Insurance, Equipment, Promotion and Materials.

Besides the financial costs, there is no parade without floats and Community involvement.

The parade is only as good as the quality of the participation and each year we have endeavored to make floats and assist groups where we usually have a theme and give prizes accordingly. We do not receive any grants for the parade

and we try to cover costs from collections on the day but in recent years the costs have increased significantly.

This year we are calling on the support of the local community to support this the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Blackrock.

Sunday saw another team competition as the Winter Series sponsored by Tiernans Centra Blackrock entered its second week.

This was a Champagne competition over 14 holes so two scores counted at each hole but each player had to play their second shot from the selected drive on par fours and fives.

Three single-figure handicapper, Conor McCaughey (6), David Murden (9) and Mickey Coburn (9) combined with Nigel Giff (21) to return the best score of the day, an impressive 77pts.

That was two points more than the 75pts recorded by the runnersup, a team made up of seasoned veterans George Rogers (19), Sean Ward (19) and Ollie English (13) along with Martin Crosby (9).

They took second place on countback thanks to their 49pts haul over the final nine holes.

The Captains' Drive In takes place on Sunday, February 24 at 1.30pm and will be followed by a 9 Hole Mixed Scotch Foursomes. Booking on BRS goes live on Thursday, February 14 at 11am.

Dinner afterwards will be provided by D'Lish with a two course meal including tea or coffee €20 while a three course meal with tea or coffee is €25. Local Girl Guide scoops prize in FIRST LEGO League A Louth girl was on an Irish Girl Guides team that scooped first place in the research category of the FIRST LEGO League Leinster finals, which took place recently in Dublin City University (DCU).

Clodagh Young (13) of Glyde Guides, Louth, spent several months working on the project, which explored how astronauts could grow vegetables in space. Her other team-mates, all members of the Irish Girl Guides, came from all around the country, which made working together challenging.

They met five times for full day workshops in DCU’s Lego Innovation Studio and, fittingly, chose the name ‘Sparrots’ as their team name (sparrots = carrots & space)!

As well as developing a research project based on identifying a human physical or social problem faced during longduration space exploration and proposing a solution, the girls also had to design, build and programme a robot to undertake various challenges on a themed playing field during the finals. They named their robot Pablo!

The FIRST LEGO League is an international competition involving children and young people from age 11 to 16 from 80 countries. The teams operate under a signature core set of values, which include teamwork, sharing of experience, discovery, the spirit of friendly Lego Team Sparrots on stage with cup. competition and co-operation.

News Marist celebrate Catholic Schools Week

Joe Lennon, Niall Quigley and Oisin Ryan from Colaiste Rís are looking for votes for their Junk Kouture creation ‘Panic! On the Dancefloor’. The trio have asked for people to register on the Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture website and once they have done this they can vote every day until Friday 15th February.

Junk Kouture is an all island competition for secondary school students which takes elements such as fashion, design, engineering and environmental sustainability and transforms them into a creative contest like no other.

Events to mark Catholic Schools Week 2019 were held across the country, with St Mary’s College joining in the celebrations under the theme of ‘Marist Connections: Celebrate Me’.

During the week events at the school saw students explore the living tradition of Faith Practice, while also considering the elements that make the school welcoming and think about how welcoming each one is to all.

They reflected on all generations young and old and their valuable contribution to St Mary’s College, and took time to think about what it means to serve others and to serve God. They also reconnected with their Marist Heritage and celebrate a Marist day

on Friday February 1.

Students and staff created a Marist connections chain which represented their common bond and linked together their hopes and dreams.

A Marist Jigsaw was created which contained the key words for the Catholic School Week journey.

A survey was carried out to establish the college diversity and it was discovered that the Marist contains 42 nationalities. A bunting flag display at the college entrance reflected this. A world map also showed these countries and the location of the Marist Missions.

The week also included a range of activities including a CSW Reflection

and prayer each morning, while after lunch each day they had grace after meals said in different languages.

In Religion classes the teachers used the CSW resources while on Thursday and Friday the Fifth Years had a talk on Marist Missions.

On Friday the school celebrated Marist Day and all staff were invited to wear blue to represent the Marist link to Our Lady. In class students learned about the Marist history and their school crest. There was a Marist student treasure hunt also. Two first year students Cliona O’Hare and Hannah Morton pictured won the treasure hunt. St. Brigid’s day crosses were Students enjoying ‘Catholic Schools Week’ in the Marist also made in some classes.

Louth allocated €7.5m for road improvements Louth has been allocated just over €7.5m in funding to help repair local and regional roads in the County.

The funding is part of a national €483m investment programme for roads throughout the country and will be used to fund important safety upgrades including damaged bridges and black spots which have seen multiple car crashes occur.

Projects in Louth include safety improvement works in Dundalk, Annagassan, Kilsaran, Bellurgan and Knockbridge. Cllr Antoin Watters expressed his delight in particular for the €35,000 worth of funding allocated to Bellurgan

which has seen a number of accidents in recent years. The upgrades will take place between the junction of Deer Park Road to the service station opposite Bellurgan Football Club.

“Great news that the Bellurgan Straight has received funding for additional traffic calming measures. I have been campaigning for this for some time following a high number of accidents in this area. I am disappointed that Grange Cross application was not successful but I will continue to work for additional safety measures at this dangerous junction,” stated Antoin.

allocated to improve the pedestrian route to commercial areas on the Avenue Road. €15,000 will go towards implementing safety measures in Knockbridge where vehicle speeds to the village crossroads are in excess of the speed limit of 50kph.

Meanwhile Kilsaran has been allocated €15,000 to introduce safety measures on long straight stretch of regional road through the village. Historically this has been a road which has seen drivers break the speed limit which has been a big problem especially given the fact that there is a national school on that stretch of road.

Fine Gael councillor John McGahon welcomed the funding stating that it is essential to maintain and improve our roads to help improve safety on our roads.

“I warmly welcome the additional funding support of €7.5 Million to assist Louth County Council in progressing repairs to regional and local roads.

“2019 will see a further significant increase in grant funding for regional and local roads, which I’m delighted to see.

“Recent extreme weather events have had a major impact on the regional and local road network and this funding will see essential

maintenance and improvements carried out.

“These events, combined with the extended period of reduced funding for road maintenance following the economic downturn, have left the road network much more vulnerable to damage.

“Fine Gael is determined to support the continued growth in our economy in the years to come by maintaining and renewing existing infrastructure.

“I know this funding will greatly assist in the repairs and ensure our road network in Louth is of the highest standard,” concluded John.

Breathnach seeks clarification from Minister on roaming charges FIANNA Fáil TD Declan Breathnach has stated that any return to roaming charges would be grossly unfair to this region. Breathnach has sought clarification from Minister Richard Bruton

to ensure that he will do all in his power to prevent the return of roaming charges post Brexit.

“Inadvertent roaming happens all the time in the border region and indeed just north of

where I live where the phone signal which is the strongest at any time is the one which your phone connects to.”

“I would not wish to see mobile phone bills increase unfairly after

Brexit for those living in the border area. This is just another example of the lack of consideration shown to those residing in the border region both north and south. The UK is currently a mem-

ber of the EU Digital Single Market, but post 29th March if Britain leaves with no deal, this membership will cease.

“Both Governments need to ensure that free roaming is maintained

on the island of Ireland and indeed between Ireland and the UK after Brexit.

“While I am aware that most of the large mobile service providers have stated that they

have no plans to introduce roaming fees, we need to have this set in stone so that people will not need to worry about accidental roaming. We need fairness for all.

Dundalk pupils enjoy children’s fitness initiative

De La Salle complete CPR training Students from De La Salle College certified in hands only CPR training sponsored by the Irish Heart Foundation. The training was carried out by school teacher and certified instructor, Shaun Cumiskey. Over 150 students have been trained so far this year and the school is aiming to have all trained by the end of the school year.

Fitness and healthy eating should start at a young age. That’s the message children at five Dundalk schools have been taught at a recent ‘Fit Squad’ interactive health and fitness session, delivered by Irish fitness expert, Tom Dalton.

Local participating schools were St. Mochta’s National School Louth Village; St. Malachy’s Girls School, Anne Street; Dun Dealgan National School, Jocelyn Street; Rampark National School and Kilsaran National School, Castlebellingham.

Organised by Dundalk-based banana importers Fyffes, over 600 pupils from second to sixth class took part in the active workout, which included talks and tips on healthy eating, all designed to improve children’s general fitness through engaging and fun-filled activities.

Peugeot brand delivers highest market share in over a decade

Registration figures released for the critical January new vehicle market, have seen the PEUGEOT brand deliver a combined passenger car and light commercial vehicle market share of 5.4% (+7.4% year-on-year), the highest share the lion-brand has recorded in any January in Ireland since 2005.

Following a strong sales performance in 2018, PEUGEOT now retains its Top Ten passenger car market share in January 2019, whilst moving up to fourth place in the light commercial van market (+28% year-on-year) to command almost 9% of van sales in Ireland. Des Cannon, Managing Director at Gowan Distributors Limited, PEUGEOT Importer in Ireland, said: "In a weakened market

(-13%), we have delivered the highest volume growth in Ireland, for cars and light commercial vehicles combined, to

reach our highest market share in over 10 years.
