A group of parent and support organisations who go under the banner of the Louth Respite Working group are demanding the provision of appropriate respite services in Louth for adults with disabilities. Many families are fast approaching breaking point as they deal with the challenges of family members with disabilities who have passed the age of 18. Currently there are no respite services available for those over 18 and families are calling for funds to be made available to cater for this urgent need. During a meeting in Ardee last week members of Autism Support Louth, SNAP, and ABACAS all clearly outlined to the local public representatives of the desperate need for respite

services they face on a daily basis. Respite does not exist after 18 years of age and only option is residential places which can cost €300k per person instead of providing respite which is economically more viable than residential. There are no psychological or psychiatric services available in Louth for people with Intellectual Disability. The meeting was held in advance of Tuesday’s Budget in the hope that provisions would be made to meet the needs of families. According to David Lally who is a member of the Louth Respite Working Group there are three main groups in desperate need of respite, older adults with a disability living at home with older parents, young adults with challenging behaviour See Page 7
