A jury has found 29-year old Aaron Brady guilty of being involved in the robbery of Lordship Credit Union in 2013. The robbery led to the death of Garda Adrian Donohoe on 25th January 2013 and the jury of five men and seven women are currently deliberating on the charge of capital murder which Brady from New Road, Crossmaglen, Armagh has denied.

However, at 1.33pm the foreman of the jury announced they had reached a unanimous guilty verdict on count number two which related to the robbery at Lordship Credit Union.

Following the verdict Judge Michael White asked the jury to return to the Central Criminal Court yesterday (Tuesday) while stating that he will accept a majority verdict in relation to the capital murder charge if at least ten of the twelve jurors agree.

‘Fill A Bus’ for Meals on Wheels Dundalk Leader 12th August 2020

Bus Éireann has announced they are joining up with Meals on Wheels Dundalk and appealing for contributions for the vulnerable, elderly and housebound in the area.

A Bus Éireann bus will be reserved for the day in Dundalk bus station on The Long Walk tomorrow (Thursday) from 10am to 6pm with the intention

of filling it from top to bottom with donations from the public.

“Bus Éireann are very proud to support the Dundalk Meals on Wheels service at a time when it is so badly needed,” said Sales Executive for Bus Éireann, Michael Colleran.

“Covid19 has brought immense challenges to the Meals on Wheels service, making it dif-

ficult for the team to not only deliver the meals, but also to collect the donations which are so badly needed to keep this essential service operating. Bus Éireann carry over two million passengers in the North East every year, if even a small portion of these people come out to donate, we will succeed in this challenge”.

Meals on Wheels have been running since 1972 in Dundalk and support over 80 people in the locality every day. They suggest bringing non-perishable goods for donation to ‘Fill the Bus’ such as: tea, coffee, powdered custard, tins of fruit, creamed rice, Bisto granules, stock cubes, cooking oil as well as useful household products

such as tin foil, Brillo pads, washing up liquid, disinfectant spray and disposable gloves.

“We would like to thank Bus Éireann for partnering with us on this campaign”, said John Hennessy of Meals on Wheels, Dundalk, “these vital donations will be going directly to the people who need them and we are continually grateful to the

people of Dundalk, supporting the most vulnerable in our society”.

The Bus Éireann reserved bus will be parked in the Dundalk Station, Ardee Road from 10am-6pm, Thursday 13th August. All necessary Covid19 precautions; social distancing and face coverings will be strictly observed at all times.

‘Problems in society laid bare by COVID crisis’

The ‘crimes’ in Irish society – which includes the housing crisis, mixed messages on foreign travel and the reliance on cheap food at the expense of workers’ rights – are now coming home to roost because of Covid-19, according to a Dundalk TD. Ruairí Ó Murchú said the ‘perfect storm’ is brewing now as ‘all the crimes and injustices in society are being laid bare by this ongoing Covid-19 crisis’.

The Sinn Féin deputy said: ‘It seems like we are being made pay for every weakness that we have in the economy and which we knew about already, because of this crisis.

‘We were aware of the pres-

sure that family farmers are under, how the meat industry has been less than considerate of workers’ rights and how, because of the housing crisis, workers are living in cramped and overcrowded conditions.

‘Immediately, there is a need to get the very basics rights – test, trace and isolate – and to give clear, unambiguous advice about foreign travel.

‘There clearly needs to be more unannounced inspections of workplaces by the Health and Safety Authority and in order to do this, they need to ensure there are sufficient inspectors.

Publicans are feeling ‘abandoned’ according to LVF chief The President of the Louth Vintners Federation has said the Government’s decision to keep pubs closed has left the sector “abandoned” in more ways than just financially.

Cllr Pearse McGeough warns of scam texts from banks Sinn Féin Councillor Pearse McGeough has warned people not to click into any link in a text message purporting to be from a bank or a financial institution.

Cllr McGeough said “I received a text today telling me that my PTSB online access was frozen and if I wanted to recover my account I had to click a link. I do not bank with PTSB so I was immediately wary but I have to say, it was believable and if I was a PTSB customer I may have been tempted to click it. About an hour later a constituent told Cllr Pearse McGeough. me of a text she had received from Bank of Ireland which rounds.”

It only takes a few people to respond and the scammers are quids in. These scammers are professional at this and are very believable when they get you on the phone.

“I want to warn people firstly that this particular scam is doing the rounds and secondly to remind people never to divulge any personal bank-

ing details over the phone to anyone, a genuine call from a bank or financial institution will never ask for log in details or passwords. If you are concerned or worried about a call, hang up and dial the bank directly yourself or call into your branch and speak with someone.

“In this day and age you are more likely to be robbed digitally than being mugged on the street. I’m warning people to be aware and assume it’s a scam unless the caller can prove otherwise. These people are very good at what they do and they only need a very small percentage to fall for it and it’s a good payday for them.”

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) Student Union President Taidgh Kavanagh is “optimistic” the Union can get a good deal for students at an upcoming meeting about a Safe Return plan.

“The proposal we put forward was created through student feedback over the past three months,” said Taidhg.

“It entails issues such as timetables, hygiene, digital inequality and many more issues.”

He added: “At the current moment in time, the registrar has agreed to meet the Union on August 13 to discuss any outlying issues.

“We are optimistic that we can get a good deal for the students.”

Speaking to The Dundalk Leader Taidgh said that the Union has been working “flat out” to ensure students are kept informed about the coming academic year.

“Some students want to know if it would be more cost effective to commute

rather than rent accommodation,” he said.

“Semester one is going to focus on blended learning, a mix of on-campus and online learning. Will it be worth it to pay e450 a month if you only need to be on-campus one day per week?”

“We’ve received a lot of emails from students who are concerned about a variety of issues including student nurses who won’t be able to work in a different setting when they are on work placement.

“They are our unsung heroes. We must make sure they are not forgotten about.”

Taidgh added: “Students are also worried their grades might be negatively affected by the reliance on digital technology. There’s no point having a laptop if you don’t have adequate broadband.

“Hopefully semester two turns out a lot better and the Union can focus on promoting other campaigns such as our sexual health campaign.”

Paul excited ahead of An Táin Arts Centre’s first live act since March

An Táin Arts Centre have pulled out all the stops to ensure that the upcoming eagerly anticipated outdoor production of Beauty and the Beast can take place in the beautiful surroundings outside Anaverna House.

Rehearsals are currently in full swing for the family show which will run from August 19th until August 23rd in the wonderful grounds of Anaverna House in Ravensdale. This will be the sixth year An Táin have put on a production in Anaverna and given the current circumstances has probably been the toughest to put together yet. According to An Táin Arts Centre CEO and director of the show Paul Hayes, some creative thinking had to take place to make sure the show could go ahead.

“The fact that Beauty and the Beast is a love story meant that it was impossible to direct the production using social distancing which represented a bit of a challenge for me as director. We looked at ways to get past that obstacle and ultimately the solution was to invite the whole cast to stay in my house for the duration of rehearsals and the show. There is a cast of five and they are all living with me at the moment to ensure we are all in the same bubble and able to put this production together,” explained Paul.

“There will be three weeks of rehearsals in total and then five days of the show which will include fourteen

Obviously, the safety of our audience is at the forefront of our minds and because of that we have limited the numbers to thirty people per show to ensure we can adhere to social distancing.

We will have family pods and unlike previous years where we ventured inside the house for some scenes we will be outdoors all the time for this production.

“It’s been an incredibly tough time for the arts and it doesn’t look as though it is getting better anytime

soon so we are lucky to be able to put on a big outdoor production in Anaverna. We have a reputation for putting on big family friendly shows and I know a lot of people are looking forward to coming out to Anaverna to watch us put on a show for them,” stated Paul.

“For those who haven’t been before we move the production around the grounds and the audience follows the cast in this case to four different locations. It’s something different and has been very well received in the five previous shows we have put on. Since

lockdown we have managed to think creatively and continue to support the arts and give people something to enjoy during this unprecedented period in our history. We have employed 85 artists since we closed our doors in March and utilised online and virtual means of putting events and exhibitions together for the public. I’ve been doing this for twenty years and in all that time we have been underfunded so we are used to working hard and creatively to put things together and I think that resolve has helped us over the past few

months,” concluded Paul.

Paul’s modern twist of Beauty and the Beast will mark An Táin Arts Centre’s first live, in person, performance since March and will run in the beautiful grounds of Anaverna House from 19th-23rd of August. €90,000 for three Louth villages under Town and Village Renewal Scheme

Louth Senator John McGahon has said that €90,000 in Town and Village Renewal Scheme for Carlingford, Ardee and Clogherhead will allow the three villages to adapt to the ‘new normal’ as a result of COVID-19.

Carlingford received €40,000 for the provision of cafe style outdoor furniture, seating, parasols and traffic segregation in key areas of the town and an activation plan for the town in order to increase footfall.

Ardee received €25,000 which will support businesses, voluntary organisations and

sports groups in Ardee to develop an active online presence, including online platform, website development, training, mentoring and promotion.

Clogherhead also received €25,000 for the rejuvenation of the village business district with shop front improvements such as painting and signage.

Senator McGahon said “The approved projects will assist businesses/communities in Carlingford, Ardee and Clogherhead to adapt to the specific challenges posed by COVID-19 (e.g. social distancing) and to increase

The Town and Village Renewal Scheme is a key initiative under the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development, and is part of a range of measures to support the revitalisation of rural Ireland under the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 Rural Regeneration Programme.

Gardaí appeal to drivers to act responsibly

There were four fatalities on Irish roads and ten serious injuries over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, Roads Policing and Community Engagement, An Garda Síochána said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragedy seen on our roads this weekend. I want to take

this opportunity to send our condolences to all of those affected. An Garda Síochána views any road death as one too many and we will continue to work together with our partners in road safety to reduce road deaths.”

An Garda Síochána and the RSA are also very disappointed by the high number of road traffic offences detected over weekend, and the blatant disregard for others.

Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman said: “The level of endangerment we encountered over the weekend is not acceptable. Despite our best efforts to proactively engage and educate drivers, too many are still taking chances and putting people’s lives at risk.”

Garda enforcement figures show that 160 drug and drink driving arrests were made over the August Bank Holiday

weekend. A high number of drivers were also detected speeding, with some in excess of 100 km over the limit.

During a joint operation with the RSA, Naas Roads Policing Unit conducted a number of checkpoints which led to the detection of 19 offences in just one day.

Speaking to drivers, Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman has this strong message: “There is simply no place on our roads for people who do not comply with legislation. Every driver must be responsible, and not just think about their own safety, but the safety of their families and loved ones, and the safety of all roads users.”

Petition for a freeze on teacher numbers

A Louth woman is calling on parents across the county to back a petition to put a temporary freeze on primary school teacher numbers.

Ailish McMahon is one of nearly 1,000 concerned people who have signed the petition to Minister for Education Norma Foley.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous that primary schools are losing class teachers. We are losing a teacher at my local school and class sizes are going to jump from 23 up to 31 in some cases,” she said.

“It doesn’t make sense. The poor kids were ripped out of schools in March. I’m looking for all primary schools to freeze the number of teachers.”

In a letter sent to officials about the campaign, the founder of the petition, Libby Smyth Neilon, stated: “In the upcoming school year, when we are returning to school in a pandemic, that the Department of Education and the Government should be doing everything in their power to keep class sizes lower to meet the social distancing requirements.”

She added: “I implore you to take these matters into consideration for the schools that have been affected by this and support our campaign to restore our class teacher for the coming year.

“As parents we are putting our trust in the Government to do everything that they can do to protect our children and protect our teachers.”

Cllr Pearse McGeough—Mystery of the dog poo bin Sinn Féin Councillor Pearse McGeough has been trying to solve the case of the missing dog poo bin in Castlebellingham. The bin went missing a number of weeks ago from the entrance to Castlebellingham Children’s playground.

Cllr McGeough concluded by saying “in this case I am not making a request for the return of the stolen item or its contents.”

A flamingo has landed in Dundalk AAEX (Art as Exchange) were kindly invited to provide a contribution to the closing event of this year’s Seek Festival, planned for August 8 at the Spirit Store.

In the spirit of connecting to the town’s history, AAEX members decided to create an installation of an oversized flamingo sculpture with mechanical wings to commemorate the flamingo, which in 1985 took residency at Dundalk Bay and drew large crowds.

The AAEX Flamingo was originally meant to be installed at the small island opposite The Spirit Store, the habitat of the original one.

However, as that event had to be cancelled due to the postponement of Phase 4 of the easing of Covid 19 restrictions, it was installed on the roof of the Dundalk Tourist Information on Market Square instead.

It is now part of the attractions in town, hopefully attracting visitors like its original predecessor.

AAEX is a collective of over 30 local artists, supported by Creative Spark, which since 2016 has provided a variety of art initiatives in the region.

Finn looking for support ahead of finals A Dundalk dog has made it through to the finals of the Nose of Tralee 2020, according to Pet Sitters Ireland.

Finn, a cute Dundalk Dog Rescue labrador has been voted in as a finalist in the all-island competition.

Voting began again on August 5 and the winner will be announced on August 25 after a public vote.

The golden labrador joined St Vincent’s Secondary School as a fourmonth-old puppy last August and is now a very

important part of the school community.

Finn goes into school every day. He has his own outside area in the school where students regularly visit him throughout the day, and the clever pup now knows when the change of class is happening even before the bell rings.

He also has an indoor office where he can chill out when tired. Finn spends his day visiting classrooms, going for walks and being pampered and petted.

He has even become bilingual in a very short

space of time, learning commands in English, Irish and French.

He enjoys going to the park with different classes and has also begun work with the school’s guidance counsellor.

Finn also plays a role in the wellbeing programme, where first year students study a module called “Caring for Animals,” learning about the importance of caring for a pet.

SEEK Contemporary Urban Arts Back to school car maintenance tips Festival draws to a colourful close

The SEEK Contemporary Urban Arts Festival, which took place in Dundalk from the 1st to the 8th August, has been hailed as a huge success by the organisers. Dundalk welcomed five of the best outdoor muralists and urban artists, all based on the island of Ireland, to take up residency in the town. The artists created largescale artworks of key themes and characters inspired

by Dundalk’s rich history and heritage.

COVID-19 grants for sports clubs Sports clubs in Louth can now apply for Covid-19 Club Small Grants of up to €1,500 through Louth Local Sports Partnership.

The Covid-19 Club Small Grant Scheme is part of a series of Covid-19 related funding schemes from Sport Ireland, following the announcement of €70 million of funding by the Government to support the sports sector in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

The Covid-19 Club Small Grant Scheme will be implemented by Sport Ireland’s network of Local Sports Partnerships and will provide assistance

to local clubs with covering costs associated with the reopening of sports clubs. The items that can be covered under this scheme with a spend since 2nd May 2020 includes: - COVID-19 Related Costs for Hygiene Consumables (E.g.

Hand sanitizer, soap, face masks, gloves etc.) - COVID-19 Related Infrastructure Costs (E.g. Check the condition of your tyres During the summer months the combination of good weather and no school run can lead to many of us using our car less. As the rain and typical winter weather makes its return we will begin to see more and more cars return to the road. If your car has been idle for a significant period of time, your tyres may have lost some pressure so checking this ahead of Monday’s school run should be a priority.

It is also important to check the current condition of your tyres to ensure they are road-legal.

In Ireland, the minimum legal requirement for tyre thread depth is 1.6mm. However, our AA Rescue recommends replacing your tyre when the thread depth falls below 3mm in order to best protect the safety of you and your family.

Start your engines!

As is the case with your tyres, a car being idle for a lengthy period of time can lead to a weak or faulty battery

refusing to start when you first use the car again. Batteries generally should be replaced every five years – but if you haven’t replaced yours in a longer period of time than this it’s quite likely that having been idle your car may struggle to start. This is also a great chance to carry out some prewinter car maintenance.

Weaker batteries struggle even more when the temperature dips, so if you’re battery is nearing the end of its lifetime then get it replaced now and avoid a cold stint in the hard shoulder!

Check under the bonnet Another opportunity to take some time now to help get your car ready for the winter as well as back to school.

It’s important to check

that you have the right amount of coolant, and if necessary top it up with the correct type of antifreeze.

While you’re checking your coolant, don’t forget to check the engine oil and top it up if necessary. Depending on the manufacturer’s guidelines you may need to check the oil level up to every fortnight and particularly before any lengthy journeys. If you find that your car is using oil at a high rate it may be a sign that the engine is an issue and you should seek urgent assistance.

And check the boot too As well as checking the coolant and oil by going under the bonnet, it’s important to check the condition of your spare wheel (if you have

one) and that any emergency tools which came with the car and still in working condition.

Familiarising yourself with how to use these tools can help prevent some roadside panic if you do happen to breakdown or experience a punctured tyre.

Check your wipers for wear and tear With the recent good weather many of us haven’t had much use for our windscreen wipers in the last few months. However, as we edge closer to winter you’re likely to need them more and more, meaning it is important that you check the current condition of the wiper blades. When they become worn, wiper blades will smear the windscreen and potentially reduce your visibility. Changing the wiper blades before they reach this stage (in general a set of wiper blades should last 12 months) makes driving safer for you, but also reduced the risk to other road users should your visibility be reduced on a dark, wet winter’s night.
