A sigh of relief could be heard around villages and towns in Co. Louth as a major relaxation of restrictions on Monday saw life as we used to know it become a step closer to reality. This week saw a number of restrictions eased with inter-county travel now permitted, as well as: • Increased capacity on public transport • Galleries, museums and libraries reopening • Non-essential retail open by appointment • Barbers and hairdressers re-opening (appointments only) • Easing of rules around outdoor meetings • Resumption of religious worship Next Monday (17th May) will see a further easing of restrictions with the mass reopening of non-essential retail as businesses around the country open up their doors for the first time in five months. It’s been a hugely challenging 14 months for the business community since COVID-19 first reached our shores in March 2020 and they will be hoping that this week will mark the beginning of a return to normality with no more interruptions to trading in the months and years ahead.

“I’m just delighted to be able to get back to work and see my customers

once again. I’ve missed the craic at work and I know a lot of my customers have missed coming in and just relaxing while having a chat.

The phone has been going crazy all morning and I can’t wait to get back to doing what I love.

Hopefully the country can re-open now safely and we

won’t have to worry about any more lockdowns in the future,” stated Natalie.

Meanwhile on Dublin Street Pamela McKenna owner of Monet Hairdressers echoed the sentiments of Natalie stating that she had missed the buzz of the salon during lockdown.

“We’ve been very busy

all morning so far and it’s great to see the place busy once again. We’re all thrilled to be back and from talking to my customers I know that they are very happy to be back in for the chat while getting their hair done,” explained Pamela.

Investigation launched over alleged assault and false imprisonment in Omeath Gardaí are investigating the alleged assault and false imprisonment of two men following an incident in Omeath last Friday.

It’s understood two men aged in their 20s and 30s were held against their will and assaulted by a group of males after they arrived at a house in the in the Omeath area on Friday afternoon. One of the men managed to

free himself and raise the alarm. The second man was discovered near Drumad a short time later.

Both men were

treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda for injuries described as non-life threatening and have since been discharged.

The scene was preserved and examined by local scenes of crime officers.

A man in his 20s was arrested on Saturday morning, 8th May, as part of the investigation. He was detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice

Act, 2007 at Dundalk Garda Station and was released without charge on Monday. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Investigations are ongoing.

Peter Fitzpatrick TD has called for immediate action by the government to help young people who are caught in a rental trap. Speaking in the Dáil last week the Independent TD called for a ban on rent increases and to put in place legislation to protect renters and readjust thinking with regards to long term lease agreements.

“The rental situation in Ireland is now at a crisis point. In my constituency of Louth, as far as I am aware, rent has never been higher. In my hometown of Dundalk, it is normal for a standard three-bedroom house to have a rent bill of between €1,200 and €1,600 per month.

To put this in perspective, that is the equivalent of between €280 and €370 per week. This puts renting a house out of reach for most young couples,” stated Deputy Fitzpatrick.

“I would support an emergency three-year ban on rent increases for private residential houses, but to implement this we must put in place the necessary legislation to protect renters. In mainland Europe it is quite common to see people rent for all their adult lives but this is not what we are used to here in Ireland. However, it is the case that we need to readjust our thinking. In mainland Europe it is commonplace for tenants to have long-term lease agreements with their landlords, in many cases for terms of 20 years or more. Furthermore, there are very strong rules which protect the tenants and, for that mat-

ter, the landlords. In Ireland at present it is common for lease agreements to last no longer than a couple of years. This does not give certainty to tenants, which as far as I am concerned is one the major issues. We must be able to protect tenants and also give certainty to landlords. Why can we not look at implementing proper legislation that will facilitate longer-term tenancies, tenancies that in effect could last an adult lifetime?,” asked the Dundalk TD. “The motion also calls for provision to be made for the delivery of at least 4,000 affordable cost-rental homes in 2022.

I support this concept, but why do we have to stop at 4,000? In Dundalk, there are most likely in excess of 100 homes that are currently lying idle and vacant.

While we do not know the full facts, it is suspected that the vast

majority of these vacant homes are in the possession of banks and local authorities.

“In my constituency office one of the major issues that is constantly raised is that of young couples not being able to get mortgages. One of the most frustrating aspects of this is that in many cases these couples are paying in excess of €1,500 per month in rent, yet when they apply for mortgages where repayments are normally in the region of €1,000 to €1,200 they are being refused by the banks.

Why is this the case?

“If these couples can afford their rent, surely they can afford lower mortgage repayments. I have in the past called on the banks to recognise and give credit to those who are currently paying rent and are applying for mortgages that would mean lower repayments. I get frustrated.

“I know for a fact that only for mums, dads and family members there would be many more people homeless on the streets. Couples cannot afford to rent. They are on council housing lists because their income is slightly over the threshold. They are locked into the situation.

I would like to once more offer my support for certain measures in the motion, including the introduction of an emergency three-year ban on rent increases, the provision of a rent tax credit and the amendment of the Tenancy Act 2004 to provide for real tenancies of indefinite duration,” concluded Fitzpatrick.

“Some of the newer stock will already be up to that level. We have some difficulties in the rent scheme. It’s based on the ability to pay.

Paddy continued: “It is the mainstay of any society to ensure you have a place to live. We have a payment plan scheme in place.

“We have a team in place to assist with that and tenants are expected to be compliant with the scheme.”

Meanwhile, Paddy said that there will be sanctions for local authority tenants if their children are found to be behind antisocial behaviour in Muirhevnamor.

“There have been issues with anti-social behaviour around the Dundalk Sports Centre in Muirhevnamor,” he said.

“Under a tenancy agreement if a member of a household is identified as displaying antisocial behaviour, this can lead to sanctions.”

Tenants in arrears won’t benefit from Louth County Council retro-fitting programme LOCAL authority tenants who are in significant arrears will not be chosen to take part in a retrofitting scheme, according to LCC Director of Housing & Community Services.

Paddy Donnelly told the Dundalk Leader that the council has approval for 53 properties within a €1.4m budget.

“We’ve not yet decided which houses will be retrofitted under the scheme. We’ve examined a number of lists of properties with the technical team,” he said.

“They all have challenges.

Darkness into Light takes place O’Murchú raises issue

Darkness Into Light 2021, proudly supported by Electric Ireland, took place at sunrise on the morning of Saturday, May 8.

This year, participants were unable to gather together at the usual Darkness Into Light venues.

Instead, supporters donned their yellow t-shirts and took part in the event at a time and in a location that suited them.

“After a year in which more and more people have been affected by isolation and loneliness, Pieta is encouraging everyone to check-in with and engage with their family members, friends, neighbours and colleagues regarding their mental health and possible suicidal thoughts,” said Pieta Helpline Counsellor Alan Farrell.

Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has raised the issue of a public inquiry into the deaths of 22 people at Dealgan House Nursing Home again with the Minister for Health, a day short of the first anniversary of him raising it in the Dáil for the first time.

The Sinn Féin TD questioned health minister Stephen Donnelly and Minister of State with Responsibility for Older People, Mary Butler about when families, who are seeking answers about how and why their loved ones died, will get a response to their calls for a public inquiry.

Ministers Donnelly and Butler met with some of the bereaved Dundalk families on October 28 but despite assurances from the

On May 7 2020, Deputy Ó Murchú was the first TD to publicly raise the high number of deaths during a Covid 19 outbreak at Dealgan

House Nursing Home in April and May. He has consistently called for a mechanism to be made available to families to find out the truth of what happened.

In his latest submission to the Dáil, Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘I want to bring up once again the case of Dealgan Nursing Home and the tragic case we had this time last year of losing 22 residents.

‘Yourself (Minister Donnelly) and Minister Butler met with some of these families and you have accepted that a mechanism is needed to deliver answers.

‘The families are obviously looking for a public inquiry and I believe that is the best method for learnings and for also providing

answers. The nursing home, HIQA and the HSE all have questions to answer and also have a right to their narrative.

‘So if you can give me an update? Also, a number of these families have corresponded with yourself and there is also an issue with information that they require that they have looked for from the HSE’.

In response, Minister Butler said: ‘I am very aware that listening to families can bring great learnings to many situations. While we are still dealing with daily case numbers, we are continuing to look at options which may be available to the State in relation to listening to those who have lost loved ones’.

It was a Bank Holiday weekend like no other at Dundalk RFC as the club came together to celebrate the life of Caolan, Club Senior Player on the first anniversary of his passing.

“It was a weekend in which the ethos of sport was a unifying influence and the strong family values within the club where family is not defined only by last names or by blood enabled us to come together to honour Meego’s memory and to stand in solidarity with his parents Patrick and Julie, his brothers Stefan and Ryan and the Meegan and Caherty families and Meego’s close friends,” said Dundalk RFC PRO Mary Murdock.

Louth harper wins Seán Ó Riada medal

Harper Fionnuala Donlon from Dundalk, Co. Louth, was the winner of the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal traditional music competition broadcast live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta over the weekend.

Each year the competition focuses on different traditional music instruments, and this year it was for harp and pipes. Carlow musician Colm Broderick won in the pipes competition. The final was presented by broadcaster and composer Peadar Ó Riada on his RTÉ RnaG show, and the judges were esteemed musicians Mick O’Brien, Laoise Kelly and Michelle Mulcahy. The winners were presented with the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal and €2500 each for their win.

Fionnuala Donlon, 22, from Red-

barns Road comes from a musical family and started playing harp at nine years of age. She has won numerous All Ireland medals for her playing, and won the Senior Harp trophy at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Drogheda in 2019. She has taken part in the Comhaltas tours of Ireland, and her music has brought her to places such as France, Germany and Bangkok.

Speaking of her win, Fionnuala said: “Being in the final was a great motivation to keep me playing music for myself over these last few months, it kept me focused. Winning this is such a great boost after a difficult year, I’m really delighted.

I’m looking forward now to getting back playing music with people in

the coming months.” Donnchadh Mac Aodha from Dundalk also took part in the competition this year.

Both Fionnuala and Donnchadh have been members of the local Comhaltas Craobh Dhún Dealgan since they were kids and the fact both did so well in the competition is testament to the excellence of the Oriel Centre based organisation.

The Seán Ó Riada medal was designed by the late Cashel gold and silversmith Pádraig Ó Mathúna, and features a portrait of musician and composer Seán Ó Riada on it.

The medal is created in solid silver, and once the winners have been chosen each year their names are then engraved on the bespoke medDonnchadh MacAodha and Fionnuala Donlon al, which is then coated in gold.

More places for students in DkIT over next three years NEARLY 600 additional places will be made available at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) over three years, according to DkIT’s Head of Marketing & Communication.

Nationally, the number of first years at college is set to rise above 50,000 for the first

time with the addition of around 3,000 more third-level places this year.

“DkIT welcomes this initiative by the Department and is coordinating nationally with THEA on this issue,” said DkIT Head of Marketing & Communication Thomas Redmond.

“While discussions are still

underway, we anticipate approximately an additional 580 places over three years across existing full-time undergraduate programmes.

“This figure does not include new programmes planned for launch during this period or part-time programmes.”

Growing ‘social connections’ this Summer

Local community group, Cooley Connect Well, is delighted to announce an innovative new Social Gardening initiative which will aim to connect communities across Louth, Down and Armagh this summer. The ‘Social Connections’ project will take place with the support of funding from the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), LMETB and Louth County

Council. The project is part of the council’s €3.5m LAAP and match funding has been provided by the Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development in Ireland.

The project aims to grow connections between cross border communities through training in organic gardening and visits to local community growers and organisations involved in fostering health and well-being. The

project will run from May 2021 to September 2021 and involve a weekly class in organic growing in the Cooley Peninsula, plus weekly trips to gardens and social enterprises in the border region for talks and workshops.

The project is free of charge to participants and will involve 26 hours of engagement between May and September this year.

John cautiously optimistic about pub re-opening

A DUNDALK publican has welcomed the re-opening of outdoor dining and beer gardens on June 7, after the bank holiday weekend.

According to John Byrne from Byrne’s of No. 10 he is “cautiously optimistic” but he believes “the devil will be in the detail”.

The Hill Street pub has a popular beer garden which will be open to the public from Monday, June 7.

“I think one of the big question marks still there is what

are the guidelines going to be?” said John.

“We have been given a date but no guidelines. Will it be 1m or 2m distancing? I suppose it will come out in time.”

He added: “The other question that comes to my mind is the weather. We saw some heavy showers over the Bank holiday weekend.

“Will people be willing to sit in the rain and dine and drink outside if we get some more bad weather?

“I’ve no idea when we will get the guidelines. Last year we seemed to get them a few days before re-opening.”

John continued: “Also will there be a time limit like there was last time? These are all things we need to know. The devil is in the detail.”

Over €115,000 spent on clearing diesel sludge in Louth

Over €115,000 has been spent on clearing diesel sludge in Louth the first four months of 2021, according to Sinn Féin councillor Edel Corrigan who added that the latest dump happened in broad daylight close to the border.

Cllr Corrigan said: ‘We continue to see illegal dumping activity throughout Louth and unfortunately on May 1, in broad daylight between 12:30 and 1:30pm a further six cubes of sludge where dumped at The Annie’s area of Faughart ‘Having made many reports of similar activity in the area I queried the council about the financial costs and impacts of clean ups in addition the obvious environmental problems of such

activities.

‘The council has told me the estimated cost of removal / cleanup of each sludge waste cubes is cost per cube is €1250. The total amount of cubes recovered in 2021 so far is 93.

‘The total cost of this is funded by the Department of Environment, but this is, of course, taxpayers’ money that could be better spent. That is a total of €116,250 so far this year.

‘Unfortunately it appears to be a reoccurring theme that people dump in more remote areas and often in our areas of outstanding beauty.

‘In the past year, there have also been a number of cases where dumping of these cubes

Young writers’ competition

It has been both well documented and well recognised that for secondary school pupils that the past 14 months has proved to be a challenge in many ways. Many of the curricular activities and “add on” events in the way of competitions have had to go by the wayside.

The Rotary Club in Dundalk, supported by Dundalk Credit Union have been running its youth leadership competition for over 20 years with winners from all over the island of Ireland travelling to take part in debates in the European Parliament in Strasburg.

Like everything else, this competition that is run in an interview format could not proceed as usual last autumn. When looking for a replacement competition for this year that did not involve face to face meetings the Club decided to introduce the Rotary Young Writers Competition.

The aim of Young Writer is to give young people the opportunity to showcase their written talent through fiction, non-fiction or a poem. The theme for this year’s Young Writer competition is “My Happiest Day”. Our young people are asked to produce a piece of fiction or non-fiction/story or poem, relating to this theme. It should be up to 550 words long or 1 side of an A4 sheet.

There are 3 categories and these are Junior (7 -10 years), Intermediate 11 – 13years) and senior (14 -17 years) As it was the first year of the Clubs involvement, it was decided to run in the senior section, and 5 of the local secondary schools took part. The Finalists were Tara Suresh and Breanna Savage from the Bush, Michelle Aghbolade and Callum Clarke from the Marist, Victory Joshua and Hanna Dowdall from St. Vincents, and Sarah Dunne From Dun Lughaigh The final stories and poems were judged by Billy Doyle on behalf of Dundalk Credit Union, Sean O Hanrahan on behalf of Rotary and the judges were chaired by none other than Pat Moylan Chairperson of the Irish Arts Council.

After much deliberation, the winner was announced as Sarah Dunne from Dun Lughaigh, and the runners up were Callum Clarke from the Marist and Breanna Savage from the Bush.

Due to level 5 restrictions, prizes for the first 2 only were awarded to the winners at a socially distanced presentation in the Credit Union last Wednesday and were awarded by the CEO Billy Doyle.

Certificates and Book vouchers will be sent to all finalists.

Billy Doyle thanked all who participated and expressed the Credit Unions pleasure in continuing to support this very worthwhile competition.

Commenting on the outcome, the local president of the Rotary Club Stephen Gunne expressed his thanks to everyone that helped make the first foray into the competition such a success and hopefully it can expand into the other categories next year.

‘This is due to a legal issue that has arisen about the transposition of the EU directive into Irish law which prevents the deployment of CCTV for litter enforcement at present.

‘The government needs to act on this right now as preventative measures are needed and this is a better way to spend cash rather than on clean ups.

‘Anyone with information should contact the relevant authorities if they witness illegal dumping activities’.

Artist Rozzi Kennedy “ to display wisdom of care home residents on Maypoles Wise Words is an interactive visual arts exhibition displayed in Market Square in the centre of Dundalk town during the Bealtaine festival, based on the Maypole ritual, for the month of May. It will feature coloured ribbons wrapped around existing street furniture featuring words of wisdom from residents of Co. Louth nursing homes. This project is a continuation of An Táin Arts Centre’s former artist in residence, Rozzi Kennedy’s work with nursing homes in and around the Louth area.

Commenting on the announcement that there are now over 360 local shops and businesses redeeming “Shop Local Gift Vouchers” Chamber President Sean Farrell is calling on members of the public and the business community to get behind the Shop Local Vouchers Scheme and use them as gifts for special occasions such Birthdays, Retirements, Weddings and for staff rewards.

Every €10 spent locally on Irish products generates more than €40 of benefit to the local community in terms of employment. The retail sector employs more people than any other sector in the Irish economy. Retailers and suppliers are currently under significant pressure and its now more important than ever to shop local. Local shops use local services such as accountants, insurance brokers and suppliers.
