Two days of high drama at the count centre in the Carnbeg hotel ended with four men and one woman still standing as Imelda Munster, Ruairi O Murchú, Ged Nash, Fergus O’Dowd and Peter Fitzpatrick were elected to the 33rd Dáil. The Sinn Fein duo of Imelda Munster and Ruairi O Murchú had the luxury of sitting back and watching the drama unfold from afar after they were both elected on the first count. It was an astonishing result for Sinn Fein locally which reflected their success nationally as Munster topped the poll with a

massive 17,203 first preference votes. Her running mate Ruairí O Murchú who was only co-opted into Louth County Council at the tail end of 2017 was also elected after the first count with a total of 12,491. Both totals comfortably surpassed the quotas of 11,778. The vote for the Sinn Fein pair means that they polled more votes than the next five candidates put together. In complete contrast to the ease in which the Sinn Fein duo gained their seats the race for the remaining three was hugely dramatic with the outcome in the balance right up until 5pm on Monday. Storm Ciara wreaks havoc with local sporting fixtures By Paul Byrne

Storm Ciara hit hard in many areas around Louth over the weekend with reports of flooding and storm damage in Blackrock, the Fairgreen Road in Dundalk and coastal areas around Cooley and Carlingford. High winds and heavy rain battered the country with Met Eireann issuing an orange status warning for the whole country between 5am Sunday morning and Midday. Full Story Page 14

It’s been somewhat of a meteoric rise for Knockbridge man Ruairí O Murchú who was relatively unknown in local political circles just three years ago. His first taste of local politics arrived at the tail end of 2017 when he was co-opted on to Louth County Council when party colleague Kevin Meenan stepped down. Last year O Murchú successfully contested the local elections where he won a seat on Louth County council for Sinn Fein. He was then selected to try and retain the Dáil seat which was vacated by Gerry Adams following his retirement. His first national campaign couldn’t have gone much better as he got elected after the first count with an impressive 12,491 first preference votes. Speaking after his success Ruairí who is now based in Bay Estate thanked everybody who trusted him with their vote. “The electorate has given us a huge opportunity and it is one which neither myself or my party colleagues will squander. The people have obviously called for change and the onus on us now is to ensure we don’t waste

this huge chance given to us. “I would like to thank every single person who voted for me and I can promise that I will do my very best not to let them down. People probably thought we couldn’t take two seats in Louth/East Meath but we knew we had a chance from the messages we were getting on the doorsteps. It may have been a short campaign with regards to when it was announced but I have been canvassing for months and months now and time and time again I have heard people telling me that they have huge issues with how the government is dealing with health and housing. I had a bit of pressure on my shoulders given that I was entrusted with the task of retaining Gerry Adams seat but thankfully myself and Imelda were given huge endorsements by the electorate and we must now deliver on our promises to those people who voted us in. “I am personally very humbled and I want to give a huge thank you to my family, friends and activists who have been out knocking on doors all around the town. The hard work starts straight away and I promise that I will not let anybody down,” stated Ruairí.

outcome in the balance right up until 5pm on Monday afternoon. The big loser after a day of high tensions was sitting Fianna Fail TD Declan Breathnach who was the odd man out in the fourway race to claim the final three seats. The Green Party’s Mark Dearey was also right in the mix until late in the day when he was eliminated after the ninth count just 141 votes shy

of Ged Nash. Following Mark’s elimination the battle for the final three seats was between Fergus O’Dowd, Ged Nash, Peter Fitzpatrick and Declan Breathnach. As the counting of Mark Dearey’s transfers began the tension in the count centre was palpable as candidates and campaign managers waited nervously for some news. At just after 5pm county registrar Mairead

Ahern took to the stage and revealed that Ged Nash (11,659 votes), Fergus O’Dowd (11,282) and Peter Fitzpatrick (10,779) had prevailed with Declan Breathnach the odd man out with 9,625 votes after the tenth count. For the first time ever, the people of Drogheda and East Meath have three TDs to represent them at Dail Éireann with two in Dundalk.

Hole-in-one for Caolan in South Africa

Caolan Rafferty finished sixth in the African Amateur Strokeplay Championship in his first tournament outing of 2020 and also managed to record the second competitive holein-one of his career to date. The ace came on the third day of the tournament at Leopard Creek Golf Club when he holed a pitching wedge from 145 yards at the par three 12th hole, and he explained that it came as somewhat of a surprise. “I got the yardage, picked a club, and tried to hit a shot. It was one of those funny ones. I didn’t really catch it and turned away in a bit of disgust. As I was turning back, I heard my playing partner telling it to go in, and I was like, ‘Sorry, that can’t be right’ And as I turned around, it just disappeared. “It was lovely to get the hole-in-one because it’s been a while since I had one. It wasn’t a pretty shot but that’s golf for you, the bad ones end up being the best sometimes,” he explained. The hole in one helped to propel him into the top ten and into contention for the tournament going into the last round after he had opened with rounds of 74 and 72 to sit on two

over par and tied 16th at the halfway stage. In addition to the ace, he also recorded two birdies, a bogey and a double-bogey on his way to a one-under par 71 which was one of just seven sub-par totals in the third round. It moved Rafferty up to tied fifth and just four shots off the lead going into the final day. But he was unable to mount a challenge and needed a birdie on the last to join Ireland teammate and British Amateur champion James Sugrue in sixth place on three over, seven shots behind the

winner Martin Vorster, who won the 2019 East of Ireland Championship at Baltray. Nonetheless, Rafferty was very happy with a top ten finish and the opportunity to dust off the cobwebs ahead of what will be another very busy year for him. “It was a funny old week because I didn’t play wonderful at all. I just managed to get it round in a way that kept me ticking over. It was my first tournament of the new year so to finish tied sixth was nice. It leaves me looking forward to next week

and trying to improve on that,” he said. Rafferty’s next assignment in South Africa is the South African Amateur Strokeplay at Rand Park Golf Club which has previously hosted the South African Open. Rafferty wasn’t the only Dundalk player in action abroad last week. Eoin Murphy, who is a student at Maynooth University, was in Portugal for the fourth round of R&A Student Series where he finished tied 27th after rounds of 76, 77 and 79 in the threeround 54 hole event.

Local business Q-kangaroo readies itself for the world By Paul Byrne

The Q-Kangaroo app appeared in businesses in Dundalk for the first time in November 2018. For the past 15 months Dundalk has been a test bed for the creation of an app that can offer a complete tech solution for pre ordering in food retailers of all genres from coffee shops to fine dining Restaurants to your local Fish & chip store. Earlier this month Q-KANGAROO released its totally re designed Pre-order food app with advanced features including an instore loyalty section that make

it ready to take on the world. The app also features a chat function which enables business teams or groups of colleagues to agree group orders from within the functions of the app. The staff of the Bridge Street based operation are readying themselves for an expansion into the UK with the unique feature of instant commission free Currency exchange offered by the in-app wallet allowing seamless international movement. This expansion will begin with Belfast in quarter 1 of this year followed in the Summer with London, Manchester and other major

UK Cities, this expansion should see a doubling of staff numbers in our Dundalk office. The Q-KANGAROO business model allows for very low commission fees which delivers restaurant owners a world class mobile ordering and loyalty platform for their clients whilst not suffering a huge drain on their margin. The team are proud of Dundalk and look forward to being the primary food ordering solution for all in Dundalk so that they can demonstrate to the world the benefit of great design and great functionality at great value.

And all this with the connivance of her scheming Aunt Mena and conflicted Uncle Mike. Written by John B. Keane, SIVE is a muchloved classic play. It’s a story of youth, love, tragedy, greed and generational conflict, told through Irish humour and poetic dialogue that will appeal to all ages. Carlingford Lough Heritage Trust host annual general meeting On Monday, February 17th, join us in Carlingford Heritage Centre at 7.30pm for the Annual General Meeting of Carlingford Lough Heritage Trust. The meeting is open to all, members and non-members, Carlingford natives and those who just love the town and wish they could spend more time there. This annual gathering provides the opportunity to review the previous years projects and discuss how we deliver the

town’s heritage offering in the coming year. New faces and ideas are always welcome. Of particular note this year will be the resumption of guided tours to Carlingford Castle which the Trust will be coordinating from mid-March. This project should be of interest to anyone who wants to brush up on their knowledge of Carlingford’s iconic landmark. On the night, we are joined by Darren McGettigan, author of the recently published

book on Viking activity in the north of Ireland, “The Kings of Aileach and the Vikings, AD 800-1060”. He will speak on the significance of Carlingford through this tumultuous period. Copies of his book will be available for purchase on the night. As we embark on a new season, join us for an evenings chat and insightful presentation. Hopefully, it’ll be the first of many visits to the Heritage Centre in 2020.

New youth club through the medium of Irish set to open As part of a campaign to have a full immersion Gaelcholáiste open in Dundalk under the patronage of An Foras Pátrúnachta, parents are also looking at how to promote Irish with the next generation. The first step of this is to open a Youth Club ‘as Gaeilge’ supported by Ógras of Conradh na Gaeilge, with a maiden Registration Night for interested children

on Thurs 13th February @ 19.00 in the Dundalk Conradh na Gaeilge building, at 5 Seatown Place. A number of parents and teenagers from TY upwards have already undergone the necessary garda vetting and youth leadership course in preparation for the opening. Parents and children are invited to drop in on Thursday to meet the leaders and enjoy some

crafts and games with the team. The Club is open to children ranging from 5th class to 3rd year and all the games, activities and crafts will be conducted ‘as Gaeilge’. This is an important element in the promotion of Irish in Co. Louth and the organisers believe that it needs as much support from all interested people as possible if it is to be successful.

Sports conference at the County Museum

Louth’s County Museum has announced details for a conference in February on the role of women in Irish Sport. Sidelines, tramlines and hemlines – Women in Irish Sport is a day-long conference featuring a host of speakers on the experiences and involvement of women in a variety of sports both today and in the past. According to curator, and conference co-organiser, Brian Walsh, this event will feature a range of speak-

ers who are either active in sport – as players, officials or administrators – as well as researchers looking at both the way in which games have developed over time as well as their future direction. “Sport is an intrinsic part of Irish life, it is a passion that feeds us as individuals and communities; for many it is a major part in a sense of self; it is a way of communicating with others, of facilitating social interaction, of relieving stress and

maintaining our health. In so many ways it is more than merely a game,” he stated. The event will be held at the County Museum in Jocelyn Street Dundalk on Friday February 28. The day will begin with contributions from writer and camogie player, Louise Nealon; Leinster and Ireland rugby star, Sene Naoupu; match official, Michelle O’Neill, who will discuss their experiences of sport in their own lives – both personally and professionally. Mary

O’Connor (CEO, Federation of Irish Sport) and Nora Stapleton (Sport Ireland) will talk about the changing role of sporting organisations in developing women’s involvement over time. The later sessions will focus on a diversity of sports both historic and contemporary ranging from women at the Olympics to Gaelic Games, gymnastics to soccer. Co-organiser Helena Byrne, noted that events such as these reflect the strides that sport has made in

the past number of years. “Many believe women’s sport is a recent phenomena but the variety of speakers at the conference highlight the varied roles women have played in developing Ireland’s sporting culture from the Victorians period to the present day,” she stated. Admission to the conference is free but prior booking is essential. Bookings can be made either by contacting the Museum directly at 042 9392999 or via eventbrite.

Election 2020

Fitzpatrick’s victory is the best day of his life ‘The best day of my life’ was how independent candidate Peter Fitzpatrick reacted to the news he had claimed the fifth and final seat at the conclusion of Monday’s count in the Carnbeg Hotel. The former Fine Gael TD who quit the party two years ago was elected after the tenth count following a titanic battle on Monday. It’s been a very successful few months for the former Louth GAA manager having also run a successful campaign to become the Louth County GAA Chairman. After news of his re-election was confirmed Peter thanked all of his family and friends for their help throughout the campaign. “I have to say I am truly humbled to be elected for a third time here in County Louth. It’s been a gruelling campaign and I want to first and foremost thank my wonderful family and campaign team for all their hard work. I don’t come from a political background but I do come from

Peter Fitzpatrick pictured with his wife Anne

a team background through competing in sports and I think that team mentality has really helped me in my political life. “You need good people around you to get things done and thankfully I have plenty of them in my life. I run a very busy constituency office in Dundalk and have been doing for the past nine years. The most important thing for me is to try and do my very best to help every single person who comes

into my office with a problem,” he explained. “I would have to say this is probably the happiest day of my life. I’m a grandad now and to have all my family here to share this day with me is hugely special. It was a big decision for me to leave Fine Gael but we went out on our own and although we were probably up against it we managed to get that fifth and final seat and we could not be more happy. “As an Independent TD my aim is to represent people from all political backgrounds and to assure you that I will always act with honesty and integrity in my role as a TD for Louth and East Meath. We are facing into a very challenging period over the coming weeks in the formation of a new Government but I would like to assure you that I will be acting in the best interests of Louth and East Meath during this period,” promised Peter.

Disappointment for Dearey As always in a general election there were highs and lows throughout the course of the count and unfortunately for Green Party candidate he experienced the latter as he narrowly missed out on gaining a seat. Mark, who was contesting his third general election, was in contention right throughout the final day of counting before eventually being eliminated following the ninth count. The Green Party candidate was just 141 votes shy of Ged Nash following the transfer of John McGahon’s votes and that signalled the end for the popular Spirit Store owner. After the result was announced Mark admitted he was disappointed but proud to have ran such a good campaign. “I first of all want to thank every single person who gave me their vote and I also want to express my delight with my own party who have won twelve seats. Obviously I would have loved to have made it thirteen but it wasn’t to be this time around. I was very happy with my cam-

paign and my brilliant team who helped me massively during this short but intensive campaign. I was in the mix all day and when I received almost a thousand transfers from Audrey Fergus we were right up there. However, I probably needed to receive a similar total from John McGahon’s transfers and in the end that was asking a bit too much. “We live to fight another day and for me I am delighted that the Green Party will now make up a significant part of the Dail. I do think that climate emergency has become a part of the national debate and that must continue and we need to introduce good policies to help drive that campaign,” stated Mark.

High winds and heavy rain battered the country with Met Eireann issuing an orange status warning for the whole country between 5am Sunday

morning and Midday. The adverse weather conditions had an affect on sports fans all over the county with both the Presidents Cup Final and Louth’s GAA Division 3 match with Offaly postponed. Dundalk were due to face Shamrock Rovers in Oriel Park on Sunday at 3pm but a statement released by the club stated that the game would be postponed in the interests of safety. “Sunday’s FAI Presi-

dent’s Cup tie between Dundalk FC and Shamrock Rovers, which was due to be played at Oriel Park, has been postponed due to Storm Ciara. Following discussions with all parties on Sunday morning, the FAI, in conjunction with Dundalk FC, has taken the decision to postpone the game in the interest of safety for players, fans and all involved. Discussions on a new date for the fixture will take place in due course.”

Louth’s Division 3 National League game with Offaly also fell foul of the weather after the pitch in the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda was deemed unplayable. There was a last-ditch attempt to try and move the fixture to Dowdallshill but following a pitch inspection the decision was made to postpone the game. It has since been announced that the game has been rescheduled for this Sunday in Drogheda at 1pm.

GSD School of Drama makes dramatic changes Geraldine’s School of Speech & Drama is delighted to announce a range of fun drama workshops, courses and events coming soon to GSD School of Drama. The school made some big changes towards the end of last year according to Geraldine. “We moved from our regular venue in Creative Spark to the Wellington Hall and Pilates Barre Studios. Both of our new locations are in the town centre, it’s been a big change but has been very well received by all,” stated Ms Kieran. GSD School of Drama also plans to move to Blackrock starting in mid-February with a fun Creative Drama and movement course. These

courses will complement the school’s Speech & Drama, elocution and current creative drama courses. At this stage in the year we are very busy preparing for annual competitions, exams and a special theatre production for the class year of 2020. “The school wishes to return to its roots, by focusing on providing courses that will encourage self-confidence, develop imagination and help children to improve their speech and communication skills. We provide an excellent standard in performance for stage and film,” added Geraldine. “We rounded off last year with a fantastic charity event for Temple Street Children Hospital. The students

participated in a fun drama competition called GSD’s Got Talent. Each individual course group competed through a series of recitals in poetry, drama and mime for the top prize of being crowned the best drama group. The winners were decided upon by text vote by parents. “This event was a huge success and we were shocked at the turn out and the standard of acting was excellent. A little bit of healthy competition is really a great way to boost confidence and encourage participation from all drama members,” stated Geraldine. For more information on classes please check out our website www.eloquence.ie or call 0871914076.

Election 2020

Declan expresses his gratitude

Away from all the euphoria in the Carnbeg hotel following the tenth and final count there was a quiet corner of the room where Declan Breathnach and his campaign team were digesting the fact that the Fianna Fáil man had failed to retain his seat. It was a harsh ending for Breathnach who was ultimately the odd one out in a four way battle for the last three seats following Sinn Fein’s capture of the first two seats on Sunday. Declan who topped the poll for Fianna Fail in what was his first general election campaign in 2016 was widely tipped by most political observers to retain his seat but after the first count he was back in sixth spot and the alarm bells were beginning to ring for him and his team. The Knockbridge man got himself back into the mix following the distribution of running mate James Byrne’s transfers but his late surge was halted following Mark Dearey’s transfers when he received the lowest of the four candidates vying for those three seats. After it was confirmed he had failed to retain his seat a disappointed Declan spoke to the large crowd in the Carnbeg count centre. “The people have spoken and that’s democracy in action. I ask that those elected here today work in the spirit of co-operation and always put the interests of the people they deserve ahead of everything else. I am very grateful for having served the people of Louth/East Meath for the past four years and I will sit down and speak to my family before deciding what is next,” concluded Declan.
