Dundalk Simon Community have asked people to support those less fortunate this Christmas in any way that they can as they prepare for their busiest time of the year.

Pamela O’Hare from the Simon Community in Dundalk said that although their services are busy all year around December in particular sees an increase in the number of cases they tend to.

“We have thirty beds in our hostel and they are pretty much full all year around. You may get an odd weekend where there might be a spare bed or two but in general we are full up every night. This month in particular is very busy as the days are getting colder and we try to ensure that those availing of our services can have the best Christmas possible. Pamela was speaking in the aftermath of the Simon’s biggest fundraiser of the year which took place last weekend in Market Square. The seventh annual ‘Sleepout for Simon’ took place in the town centre last Friday night as hardy volunteers braved the cold December evening to raise some much needed funds for the Simon Community in Dundalk.

sees volunteers sleeping rough at Market Square has been a huge success since its inception in 2013 and has thus far raised over €50,000 for the Simon. It has become the biggest fundraiser in the Simon Community’s calendar and is getting bigger each year.

Maeve Curtis who started the initiative with her husband Terry seven years ago was delighted with the response from the local community and thanked everybody who came to give them words of encouragement on Friday evening.

“We went out about 8pm

on Friday evening and thankfully the weather wasn’t too bad,” noted Maeve. “The Saturday night was horrendous so we were actually lucky with the weather all in all.

“Once again we were overwhelmed with the generosity of everybody in town on Friday evening and we want to thank every single person who supported us on the evening. As well as our group we had representatives from SalesSense, Irish Life, Dundalk Credit Union, Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Early Years from DkIT as well as the Psychiatric Nurses from the college who all slept

out on the night for the Simon.

“There are more and more people sleeping out each year and it’s great to see the local community get involved and help out the Simon who do such great work to combat homelessness. We slept out from 8pm on Friday evening until 8am on Saturday morning and we would like to thank Tony’s Pizzeria for sending food over to us as they do each year and also an anonymous young man who bought us ten bags of chips which were very much appreciated. We had so many people help us with the fundraising including AIB, Marshes Shopping Centre, Colaiste Ris and representatives from Louth Volunteers and we’d like to also thank each and every one of them,” stated Maeve.

“This was only one night of hardship for us but it is nothing compared to what the homeless people in Dundalk have to do all through the year. The theme this year

was ‘Nevermind your twelve pubs. Dundalk Simon Sleep out’ and the whole idea is to make the issue of homelessness visible and bring awareness to the fact that people are suffering. We want to give these people hope and if you can spread hope it acts like a ripple in a pond and begins to spread,” added Maeve.

Meanwhile Pamela O’Hare from the Simon community praised Maeve and Terry and all who took part in ‘Sleep out for Simon’ last Friday evening.

“Maeve and Terry have been the driving force for this initiative since it started seven years ago and we are hugely grateful for all the hard work they put in each year. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and hugely important for us with regards to the services we provide. I would like to thank every single person who took part or donated in the Dundalk Simon Sleep Out and we thank everybody for their continuing support,” stated Pamela.

Twins impress at Late Late Toy Show

By Paul Byrne Seven-year-old twins Lucy and Lily Rogers took to the stage like seasoned professionals as they impressed during their dance routine for the recent Late Late Toy Show. The hugely popular programme was watched by almost 1.35m people with the Rogers twins nailing their routine on the night.

The talented duo shot to fame back in October when a video of them performing a dance routine to ‘A Mil- Lucy and Lily with Ryan Tubridy at the Toy Show lion Dreams’ from The Greatest Showman went viral. The pair were dancing at their parents (Lynsey Maguire and Aaron Rogers) wedding ceremony in Portugal.

They have been dancing since the age of three under the watchful eye of Emmanuelle Salako at the Crystal Ice Dance Academy in Dundalk.

According to Lily and Lucy’s mam Lynsey the twins showed no nerves when travelling up to Dublin to rehearse for the show.

“The girls have only just turned seven but they took everything in their stride as they travelled up to the RTE studios for rehearsals. Nothing phased them and they absolutely loved the whole experience. They

have been dancing for almost four years now and love it so I guess they just feel comfortable up on the stage at this point. I think the magnitude of the whole thing and the fact that so many people were watching them went right over their heads which was probably a good thing as they had no reason to get nervous in their heads.

“I sent in a video a couple of months ago to the Late Late Show when I heard they were looking for children to perform at the show.

They called us in and they absolutely loved the two girls and the girls loved the whole experience of going up there.

On the night itself they met Shane Lowry and Katie Taylor and I have

to say Ryan Tubridy was brilliant with all the kids backstage. He told them he was very impressed with their performance and wished them well for the future. The girls have also auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent and we are expecting to

hear back in January if they will be picked for the TV series. The audition seemed to go pretty well but there’s so many people trying to get on that show so we will just keep our fingers crossed and wait and see,” stated Lynsey.

Dundalk Lions Club have launched a Braille version of Vroom-Town Christmas Book The Adventure of Santa and the Magic Truck by Dundalk author Emer Conlon. The braille book was produced in association with the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) Library Access Services and it is available through NCBI Library Access Services. The Braille Vroom-Town book was launched at an event in Roe River Books, on Saturday December 7.

David Larkin President of Dundalk Lions Club explained that this year they decided to deliver a new project for the vision impaired in Dundalk and beyond.

“We already have projects such as “Talking Newspapers for the Visually Impaired” and

we collect reading glasses for recycling, but this is about the start of a series of work we have agreed with the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) and their Library based in Dublin.

“Children who are vision impaired need audio books for entertainment. And that’s where we come in.

“When Dundalk Lions met with the NCBI to discuss a project of audio books for children, they suggested we add Braille as an option. Because of the season that is in it, we thought it would be very fitting that our first Braille children’s book would be the magical, new Vroom-Town Christmas Book,” stated David.

Author of the Vroom-Town series of children’s books, Emer Conlon explained that she was

delighted to get involved with the project.

“When the Lions Club approached me to become involved in having a Braille version of my Christmas book, it was an automatic yes. Having the books read by, or to, children is what writing children’s books is all about.

“The entire project is so humbling and it is a genuine privilege to be involved in this fantastic project with the Dundalk Lion’s Club and NCBI Library,” stated Emer.

“The Adventure of Santa Claus and the Magic Truck Dust” is available for all clients of the NCBI Library.

Nissan Qashqai continues to be the most popular car sold in Co. Louth with 148 units sold so far this year according to the latest data which has been released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). That represents a 13.85% increase from the 130 sold in 2018.

In general Jeeps/SUV’s continue to be the most popular type of vehicles sold in the county with a massive 47.88% of the share which represents an increase of over 3% from 2018. 1267 Jeeps/SUV’s have been sold this year which is slightly up on last year’s total of 1223.

Sales of Electric cars in the County continue to represent just a small total of all the vehicles sold this year with just 78 of the 2646 vehicles sold falling in this category.

That represents just 3% of all the

new cars sold in 2019 although that figure of 78 is still more than double the number of electric cars which were sold in 2018 (38). That increase mirrors a national trend which saw 3,420 electric cars registered so far this year compared to 1,224 in 2018.

Meanwhile car dealers are hoping for a bright start in 2020 with regards to sales with the new 201 registration plate on the horizon. According to SIMI there will be generous incentives for car buyers which they hope will lead to increased sales.

“With the 201 registration plate on the horizon, focus has already turned to January. With generous incentives for customers to buy a new car across all brands and across all market segments, members are hopeful for the busy start to 2020”.

A local man who is co-ordinating a Christmas shoebox appeal, Eugene Garvey, is calling for a final push to help the homeless this Christmas.

In light of the worsening homeless crisis, Mr Garvey is calling on people of Louth to do their bit to help.

“I have arranged two drop-off points in Dundalk and am calling on businesses, schools, colleges, communities and individuals to get involved and support the 10,000+ homeless people in our State (of which 3,848 are children).

“This is the last week of it, closing date for donations is December 10. Does your office do a Kris Kindle?

How about donating a shoebox for the same price and really bring a smile to someone’s face over the festive season?

“Buy an extra gift this year and donate it, it will make a big difference to someone,” added Eugene.

I n t e r n atio n al Volunteer Day took place on Thursday December 5 to celebrate the efforts and promote the work of volunteers in communities worldwide. This year’s theme was ‘Volunteer for an Inclusive Future’ highlighting how volunteerism can help strengthen communities and increase social inclusion.

Louth Volunteer Centre marked the occasion by launching their Good Relations Project in the Dolmen Centre, Omeath. The Good Relations Initiative seeks to empower participants to become leaders in their own communities, leading the way through volunteerism to promote inclusiveness and reduce inequalities; creating more peaceful, cohesive societies, as Gráinne Berrill, Man-

ager of Louth Volunteer Centre, explained.

“We share a collective vision with other volunteer centres nationwide that a vibrant Irish society is where every person feels connected to their community through active participation in voluntary activities. The Good Relations Initiative is particularly exciting for us as it enables us to train people in Cooley, Dundalk and the Mid Louth area to gain the skills and confidence to not only be active citizens through volunteerism themselves but to also create the conditions for others to feel welcome and included through volunteering.”

Therese McArdle, EU Programmes Manager in Louth County Council, explained that each initiative within the Louth Peace IV

Plan, including the project being launched in Omeath, has been carefully designed to support peace building and cross community interaction, enabling people to live, learn, socialise together and help to heal divided communities.

The event was well attended with local Councillors Paddy McQuillan, Maeve Yore and Erin McGreehan in attendance alongside representatives of local community groups, Louth Leader Partnership and Louth County Council.

The Project team are currently recruiting participants in the Cooley, Dundalk and the Mid Louth area.

Foods McLoughlin Cup returns

The third annual Foods McLoughlin Cup will take place once again just before Christmas in Oriel Park on December 21. The event is in memory of Robert McLoughlin who was tragically killed outside his home in the early hours of the morning in October 2017.

‘Foods’ as he was affectionately known had just got out of a taxi across the road from his house when he was struck by two cars on the Newry Road. The huge Dundalk FC supporter had earlier attended the Dundalk V Bohemians game in Oriel Park where he was well known by all at the club. Friends of Robert organised a soccer tournament in his memory shortly after his death which raised €100,00 for the Irish Roads Victims Association.

injury causing Cerebral Palsy. She was a candidate for life-changing surgery available in the USA but needed to raise €100,000 to make that trip. Thanks to the efforts of the Foods McLoughlin committee a massive €20,000 was raised to help Zoe’s family reach their target. Zoe recently returned from St Louis, Missouri following a successful operation which will hopefully enable her to eventually walk unaided.

mittee have decided to try and raise funds for the Temple Street Children’s Hospital with the Foods McLoughlin tournament launch taking place last Friday evening in McGuinness’s Bar in Anne St. According to committee member David Curran the event is already attracting plenty of interest and support from local businesses.

“We’ve been inundated with messages from local businesses who want to help out

and give us some spot prizes for our raffle which will take place in McGuinness’s Bar on the evening of December 21. We had so much support last year from so many people around town and it looks like we are going to have the same again this year.

We were blown away last year by the response to our fundraiser and we were thrilled to be able to give Zoe’s parents a cheque for €20,000 to help get their appeal over the line. We’ve

been following Zoe’s journey all year and we were so happy to see her receive her life changing surgery last month in America.

“This year we decided to support Temple Street Children’s hospital as there’s a few of my mates who have children getting treated up there and everybody says what a brilliant job they do. We will once again have a four-team football tournament in Oriel Park on the afternoon December 21

and later that evening at 8:30pm we will all gather in McGuinness’s for the raffle. It was absolutely wedged last year and hopefully we will get a good crowd again this year, stated David.

“The four teams taking part are all friends of Robert and we are all determined to keep this tournament going every year while we are still here to do it. He was a very good friend to all of us and his flag will always fly high in Oriel Park for as long as we are going there. We have been bringing his flag to the Aviva every year since he died for the FAI Cup final and we always buy him a ticket. He was a great friend and we will never forget him and if we can raise some money for some good causes in his name all the better,” stated David.

Local businesses bring Christmas warmth to Simon Community

As part of their Community Engagement Programme 2019, Dundalk Credit Union once again held their annual Winter Coat Appeal for service users of Dundalk Simon Community. Local businesses were eager to come on board with Louth County Council, Intact, Prometric, Graebel, Nova Leah, Horseware, DkIT’s RDC and Bellurgan Precision all supporting this worthy initiative.

Dundalk Credit Union and Dundalk Simon Community delivered coat racks and hangers to each of the supporting businesses, asking staff to donate warm winter coats.

The response across all of the businesses was overwhelming and illustrates that community spirit is certainly alive and warm across Dundalk and its wider hinterland.

Local swimmers compete with the best

Dundalk Swimming Club Duo Evelyn Donnelly and Eliza Logan will compete in the Irish Short Course Championships in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin from December 12 to 14.

Evelyn (15) makes her second appearance at the championship on Saturday following her impressive debut last year, when she competes in the 50m Breaststroke.

There are no age divisions in the Irish Short Course Championships so Evelyn will be up against the best of Ireland’s swimming talent including Mona McSharry who earlier this month scored a Bronze for Ireland in the 50m Breaststroke at the European Short Course Championships in a new Irish

Senior Record time of 29.87 and Niamh Coyne, the current Junior Olympic Silver Medalist.

Eliza (13) takes to the blocks on Friday when she looks to build on her Leinster Silver success in the Under 15 50m Butterfly last month.

groups in these Championships Eliza, who is the youngest swimmer in this event at 13, will also be competing against the 19 year old McSharry.

Some of the Dundalk Club’s newest swimmers were also in action on Sunday December 8 at the Swim Leinster Christmas Cracker event. This is the perfect gala for those who have recently taken up competitive swimming and the Club had seven promising swimmers in action. Eanna and Oisin Finnegan, Sophie and Ryan Matthews, Cian McCoy, Adrijana Viliusyte and CIara Jensen represented Dundalk in 18 events at this exciting gala.

The event inspired some outstanding performances as, for many, this was their first outing at the National Aquatic Centre.

Dundalk Snooker League update The Commercial Club recorded a fine 3-1 victory over Global Tyres in the opening match of the night despite JJ McArdle put the tyre fitters one up on the night beating Aaron Lee however that was as good as it got for Global Tyres as the Commercial rattled in the last three remaining frames with wins for Joe McEneany over David Doyle and Maddy Hoey over Keith Morris. There was also a fine doubles win with Dominic O’Connor and Anthony Fee beating Tiernan Mallon and

Gerry Roger’s to complete a fine 3-1 win for The Commercial Club.

Charlie Chaplins v The Camelot Charlie Chaplins were looking for there first win of the season when they took on The Camelot and they got off to a fine start when Mickey Kelly recorded a fine victory over Ken Mullholland. However, it wasn’t long before The Camelot drew level when Mark Laverty produced some outstanding snooker in beating Mickey Ralph to level

proceedings. Chaplins again hit the front when Stephen McBride beat David J McArdle in what was a fine display of match snooker from McBride. In the doubles, Chaplins pairing of Aaron Callan and Gary McNally were easily beaten by The Camelot pairing of Paddy Hayes and Johnny Grant meaning the match ended in a 2-2 draw leaving Chaplins still in search of their first win.

After many years of a very high Louth-schools participation rate in the FAI-run Primary 5’s competitions, December 2019 sees the launch of the inaugural FAI Schools Louth Primary U-13 11-a-side competition.

Thursday December 12 and Friday 13 will see ten schools from across the county battle it out in the group stages of

the competition, with the top two schools from each day qualifying for the finals day in January 2020.

DkIT Sport will host all three days of the event, which will see St. Mary’s N.S., Drogheda, Sunday’s Gate N.S., Drogheda, CBS Primary, Dundalk, St. Fursey’s N.S., Haggardstown, Scoil Phadraig Naofa, Kilcurry, St. Francis

N.S., Blackrock, St. Colmcille’s N.S., Tullydonnell, Scoil Eoin Baiste, Dundalk, Bay Estate N.S., Dundalk & St. Joseph’s N.S., Avenue Road, battle it out to become the inaugural FAI Schools Louth Primary School champions.

The finals day will take place in January and is provisionally scheduled for Thursday January 16th 2020.

The Dundalk councillor made queries on the project during the recent meeting of Dundalk Municipal District.

Cllr Ó Murchú said, “Louth County Council officials have informed me that the redevelopment of the site is a complicated process.

“There have been many false dawns regarding the delivery of the 60 plus social housing units which it could yield.

“I am informed that currently a planning application from the proposed developer is going through a validation process and that Louth County Council are in support of the proposal, in principle.

“Although there may still be a long wait before families are actually living in Halliday Mills it is a crucial piece of infrastructure for Dundalk.

“The realisation of these homes will ensure that Louth County Council continues to achieve the targets set by Government as part of Rebuilding Ireland.

“More importantly it will mean that over 60 families will have a home of their own in which they are not subject to the whim of a landlord solely concerned with profit making.

“In addition the completion of this project will ensure that there is no scope for the serious anti-social behaviour which was a feature of this site for many

years.”

Councillor Ó Murchú concluded by saying that Louth County Council would update him over the coming weeks.

“I asked officials at the Dundalk Municipal District meeting for an update regarding the timeline for delivery of these homes.

“Officials have said that they will revert to me in due course.

“I will continue to press Louth County Council to ensure no time is lost in the delivery of Halliday Mills.”

During Tuesday’s meeting of Dundalk Municipal District, Councillor Ruairí Ó Murchú had proposed that Louth County Council would look at ways of improving the means of signposting groups to grants and funding streams.

Councillor Ó Murchú said there were some very positive interactions between Louth County Council and the community and voluntary sector. However, he pointed out that for many groups, access to funding is a big issue.

“I understand that it is not always the remit of the council to signpost groups to funding opportunities but

I think that a few simple actions could result in enhanced opportunities for groups.

“We discussed that Louth County Council could conduct an audit of how it interacts with community groups. I have also requested that Louth County Council look at creating a web page or portal for funding.

“This page, which would be updated each week, could operate on a sectoral basis and should include links to information from all potential funders and information regarding deadlines for application,” concluded Ó Murchú.

Louth TD Gerry Adams has described the governments housing policy and in particular its homelessness strategy has been “an absolute failure”.

“The facts are that rents have reached new heights in Louth and elsewhere across this state, families are spending longer on waiting lists, and 47 children and 131 adults from Louth – will spend Christmas living in hotels and bed and breakfasts. That should not be acceptable in one of the wealthiest states in the world today.

On Thursday night last Dundalk Photographic Society (DPS) were delighted and honoured to award members Colm Kane, Tony McDonnell and Dave Donlon the Irish Photographic Federation’s (IPF) Peter Slattery Memorial award for lifetime services to the society.

DPS have been commemorating their 40th Anniversary this year, and the three men have been a huge part of that 40 years in generously giving of their time, dedication and services, and played a huge part in the enormous success of the club over the four decades.

Tony, a member for 38 years, is one of the finest prolific Irish photographers and one who at every turn throughout his membership has been willing to teach photography, share his skills and wealth of knowledge with our members.

to success. Among his many personal successes, including DPS Photographer of the year on many occasions, Tony was part of the winning team who won the FIAP World Cup 2010, beating photography clubs from 140 countries.

Dave Donlon, a member for 37 years, has been on the DPS committee since 1984 and much of that time he has held the position of treasurer. Dave

is the backbone of DPS always a steady hand at the helm of the club, ensuring and safeguarding the financial stability and wellbeing of DPS at every turn. Dave also holds the position of Treasurer for the IPF North East Region.

Colm Kane, over the past 30 years, has been an integral part of DPS. He has served on the committee for a considerable number of years and has

held various positions including Chairman, and selection committee.

Colm is the only ‘Film’ photographer in DPS and probably most of Ireland. He has remained true to his craft, developing his stunning photographs in his own dark room. Over the years Colm has shared his vast knowledge of photography with all members And been a wonderful mentor to new members.

Louth County Council aim to defuse rates row Louth County Council have released a statement to try and appease traders in Drogheda following numerous media reports that suggested that they were at a disadvantage when compared to traders in Dundalk when it came rates valuations.

At this month’s Louth County Council monthly meeting councillors were told that the difference between the multiplier used to calculate the new rates in the two main towns for 2020 was marginal with the figure for Dundalk slightly less than that for Drogheda (2.27% compared to 2.29%).

The local authority have now released a statement with further details explaining that the valuation process is entirely independent and nothing to do with Louth County Council.

“Rates in County Louth are set based on a valuation process, which is run by the Valuation Office. The Valuation Of-

fice and the process arising is entirely independent of Louth County Council, both its executive and elected members.

“Revaluation is a reassessment of rateable value of all properties in any Local Authority area. The result of a revaluation is the production of what is termed a New Valuation List that contains modern valuations for all rateable properties in the County, bringing rateable values back into line with current property rental values. This reassessment of rateable value leads to a redistribution of commercial rates burden between ratepayers.

“The revaluation process is revenue neutral for Local Authorities and the results are based solely on the calculation set out in the legislation.

“In this latest process, there were a set of steps involved in the revaluation over the last two years, with the new valuation list and the rates arising coming into effect at the start

of next year. The Valuation Office wrote to the ratepayers throughout the revaluation explaining the process and collecting the necessary information they required to carry out their calculations. They also provided walk-in clinics and a helpline to assist ratepayers with the process.

“It is important to understand and to again clarify that changes in rates in any area of Louth for 2020 derive solely from the valuation figures and assessments made in that independent valuation process.

“While over time it is the policy of Louth County Council to move toward rate equalisation across the county, the changes to rates for 2020 arise solely from the independent valuation process, as set out in legislation.

“The assessment process outlined in this statement is independent of BIDS, the cost of which is additional to ratepayers in Drogheda and Dundalk.”

New funding for Dundalk IT Fine Gael TD, Fergus O’Dowd, has confirmed that €287k in funding has been allocated to DKIT under the Government’s Regional Technology Clustering Fund.

Twelve successful applicants representing academic institutions from all regions have secured funding for their projects amounting to €46m in total.

O’Dowd said: “The Regional Technology Clustering Fund is the first annual competitive fund of its kind. It provides a platform for engagement between enterprise and regionally-based academic institutions – the Institutes of Technology (IoT) and Technological Universities (TU) – in order to drive productivity and competitiveness.

“The fund aligns with the Government’s Future Jobs Ireland which prioritises clustering and builds on regional strengths to support the expansion of Irish exporting businesses and it is really positive for County Louth that DKIT is to be part of this

fund,” he stated.

“The projects will support and activate clustering in several sectors - furniture manufacturing, marine, connected health, Industry 4.0, construction, advanced manufacturing, cyber security, engineering, BioEconomy, MedTech and AgriTech.

“The clustering activity will help DKIT to connect and engage with SMEs and multinational corporations in a strategic way on common areas of interest, while providing a means to increase their educational and research remit as knowledge providers in their region.

“This kind of interaction between educational institutions and business helps companies to respond to the skills challenges faced by SMEs and to assist companies to enhance their capability to win business in international markets. This can only be good news for the economic development of our county, “ continued Deputy O’Dowd.

Sunday’s competition at Dundalk Golf Club was a 14 hole four person team event and it produced a close finish with countback being required to decide the winner.

In the end Tommy Renaghan (15), Maurice Soraghan (9), Trevor Giff (9) and Denis Cunningham (14) prevailed after they had tied on 71pts with Noel Reidy (13), Kieran Reidy (15), Brendan Duffy (12) and Oliver McGinnity (18).

As they both had 42pts over the final nine holes, the countback went to final six holes and the winners prevailed by 28pts to 27pts.

Members are reminded that the Annual General Meeting of the club takes place at 8pm on Monday, December 16 in the Clubhouse and it will follow the men’s club meeting which takes place at 7pm.

Meanwhile, in the Australian All Abilities Championship, Brendan Lawlor finished just one shot off the lead and had to settle for third place as last year’s winner Johan Kammerstad of Sweden beat Canada’s Kurtis Barkley in a play-off.

County Louth was represented by three local community groups at the Co-Operation Ireland Pride of Place awards which took place at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny on Saturday November 30.

Carlingford Community Forum was honoured at the event, when the group came runner up in the Community Tourism Initiative category, losing out to the Kerry Camino.

The county was also represented by Louth Village in the Population Category 300 – 1000 category and by Drogheda and District Support 4 Older People in the Community

Students promote green agenda

As retailers approach their busiest time of year and Christmas shopping reaches a near frenzy, students at St Vincent’s school took part in a campaign to reduce, re-use and recycle clothes.

The ‘No Buy November’ scheme encourages people to buy and consume less products, in particular non-essential items such as clothes, shoes, bags and to introduce awareness and thought into our spending. The campaign was the brainchild of teachers Bernadette White and Michelle Kelly.

A school wide awareness campaign was launched with the support of many teachers and students. Class groups attended

talks, given by Sustainable Fashion Dublin, on sustainability, the origin and manufacturing of clothes and the enormous effect waste from these items has on the planet.

Students investigated the impact on the environment of transport and manufacturing techniques used in the clothes industry. A swap shop was organised for 6th Year students, to avoid sending clothes to landfill.

Students also collected dozens of bags of unwanted clothes to donate to National Council of the Blind, ensuring clothes will be resold or recycled rather than dumped.
