Dundalk FC confirmed themselves as football kings of Ireland as they completed the League and Cup double in the Aviva Stadium on Sunday evening.

Lilywhite supporters travelled in their thousands in expectant mood and they certainly weren’t let down by their heroes as Stephen Kenny’s side came good to bring the FAI Cup back to Oriel Park for the tenth time.

Dundalk didn’t need to be at their brilliant best against a gallant Cork City side but a goal from, who else but Richie Towell, in extra-time clinched a thoroughly deserved victory.

Major fundraising concert in memory of Adrian Donohoe Dundalk Leader 11th November 2015

A special tribute concert is being organised in remembrance of the late Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe.

‘Remembering Adrian’ will be held to coincide with the third anniversary of his passing on Friday January 29 next year, and all funds raised will go to help causes close to Adrian’s heart.

The concert will be held in St Joseph’s Redemptorist Church and details of the event were outlined at the launch on Friday by organisers Kathleen Maddy, Stewart Agnew, Martin McAllister, Insp Brian Mohan and Insp Martin Beggy alongside Caroline Donohoe and Fr Michael Cusack, Artists appearing on the night will include The Priests, Liam Lawton, Stewart Agnew, Kathleen Maddy, YouTube sensation Leah Kirwan and the St Joseph’s Redemptorist Senior Choir. MC for the night will be Eileen Dunne.

Kathleen Maddy revealed that putting together the concert is a sizeable project but has been made so much easier by a willingness from everybody approached.

“It is going to be a major event, which is only right considering it is Adrian we are remembering.

“His death shocked everyone in this area to the core and now when we approach people in the community with an event that will honour him, we are pushing open doors.

“We are delighted that Fr Cusack and the Redemptorist Community are allowing us hold the event in the church. I know from our discussions with Caroline Do-

Football fans find their voice Pupils from Kilcurry National School were in good voice for the FAI Cup Final after spending Friday morning practicing their songs.

The young students celebrated ‘Black and White Day’ at the school by performing some of Dundalk FC’s best known anthems led by special guest and former player, John Whyte.

John, an FAI Cup winner with the Lilywhites in 2002, was given a huge welcome by the pupils which included his biggest fans, daughter Ciara

and son Conall.

After being introduced by principal, Frank Short, John spoke of the privilege he felt at representing Dundalk and helping them to win the Cup, and encouraged all pupils to work hard at school and get involved in sport.

Took to drink after brother’s death

A man who was finding it difficult to deal with the death of his brother came to the attention of the Gardai after he went out drinking.

Stephen Doyle of 8 Crescent 2, Muirhevnamor, was fined €150 as a result of the incident on July 3 this year.

On that date, Gardai were called to the Crescent 2 area of Muirhevnamor where they encountered the defendant

who was very drunk. He was boisterous and couldn’t walk straight.

Although he wasn’t aggressive, Mr Doyle, who had 15 previous convictions, was agitated and a source of danger to himself.

Solicitor, Niall Breen, stated that the 44-year-old father of two, had lost his brother and took it bad, and that’s why he was drinking on the night in question.

DUNDALK’S rapid return to the summit of Irish football was confirmed on Sunday afternoon at a noisy Aviva Stadium when the Lilywhites completed the double with victory over Cork City.

Most of those decked in blackand-white can recall the difficult times of recent years and for many that was even more reason to enjoy the celebrations.

Among them was Club Chairman, Ciaran Bond, who praised all involved for making it such a memorable occasion.

“As everyone knows, its not that long ago since we were going through difficult times, so I think when success comes around you tend to enjoy it more. I think the lesson is that you don’t take any success for granted and particularly in the Cup. It was 2002 since we last won it and these things don’t come around that often so you have to make the most of it”, added an ecstatic Ciaran.

lighted to see that commitment pay off.

“It really makes the hard work worthwhile when you get days like this. I think for the owners, Andy and Paul, the directors, the manager, players, backroom team, all the workers in Oriel, and of course the supporters, it is a just reward for their efforts.

“Everyone associated with Dundalk FC was absolutely thrilled and it was a fantastic occasion for the club and the town.

It was brilliant to see that so many people made the trip and

the atmosphere was just fantastic”, added Ciaran.

“There was a great reception when we came back to town and unfortunately it was a bit late for children, but it was great to see so many turn out to welcome the players home.

“There was a lot of pressure on us going in as favourites and as every saw, Cork weren’t there just to make up the numbers. However, in the end we got there and it is a great story and the perfect way to end a memorable season.

“It is only the third time in the club’s history that we have won the double so it really shows what a brilliant achievement it is”, he continued While Ciaran points out that for the moment the club is determined to enjoy the victory, they will take a short break before starting to plan for next season.

“We will relax and savour the moment for a while but then we will sit down and make plans for next season. The aim is always to win the league and it would be a great achievement to win threein-a-row”, concluded Ciaran.

Crashed in attempt to flee Gardai A man who was charged with five dangerous driving offences was told he would avoid a driving disqualification if he paid compensation.

Sean Downey of 10 Martins Lane, Newry, admitted the offences arising out of an incident on May 14 this year.

The court heard that the defendant, who was driving a red Mercedes, failed to stop for Gardai. When they activated the blue light he took off at speed through the town and broke a red light before travel-

ling out the Newry Road.

When he attempted to overtake a van he lost control and hit a wall. The car became airborne and then hit another car travelling in the opposite direction and ended up on its roof.

Solicitor, Niall Breen, stated that the 21-year-old was sorry and accepted that he could have caused serious injuries.

“He has an impeccable record and has not come to Garda attention since. I don’t think he will be before the court again as he has learned his lesson”,

stated Mr Breen who added that Mr Downey was willing to pay compensation if an estimate was produced.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that the injured party told Gardai they paid €2,500 for repairs but this wasn’t vouched.

Judge Flann Brennan said he was anxious to see the injured party compensated but didn’t expect the defendant to pay more than was due. If payment was made he wouldn’t impose a ban as he adjourned the case to February 10.

council, led by chairperson, Isabella McCormack collected €2 from each student on the day with a total of €1,400 raised.

Chris takes on one mile swim

LOCAL man Chris O’Donnell, has decided to undertake a unique personal challenge later this month when he will take part in Aura’s one mile challenge on November 24.

He hopes to use the swim as an opportunity to challenge himself and raise funds for his charity of choice Dundalk Sub Aqua Club.

After years of suffering from prolonged back pain which was due to a combination of a bulging disc, along with general wear and tear., Chris’s doctors recommended swimming to alleviate his symptoms and improve general health and fitness. So, in January of this year he decided to join the local swimming pool.

Chris had a healthy love of the water, with no fear of jumping in while on holidays.

well enough in a pool but in truth Chris said “I had no real basic swimming skills.”

After just over nine months of swimming lessons he reached a confident and competent level of swimming.

The next step was to take a challenge to test that confidence, so when his instructor

recommended the Aura one mile challenge.

Chris decided to go one step further by doing it for charity. “I thought of all the good charities in Dundalk but the Sub Aqua Search and Rescue really stood out to me, I thought it could be a great idea as it such a good cause

and I really admire the work of all the rescue services Sub Aqua do in particular.”

The experience of learning to swim has been life changing for Chris and the charity challenge will require two to three training sessions a week. One mile is a total of 64 lengths of the swimming pool, at present Chris can only do five without stopping. The pressure is on with only three weeks of training left.

The Sub Aqua Club was set up in 2001, they have an active voluntary search & recovery unit on call and ready to respond to emergencies when needed. They won the ‘People of the year award’ in 2006 which was voted by the people of Louth. Chris is hoping that the community in Dundalk will get behind his one mile swim by supporting his charity if you would like to donate contact Chris O’Donnell on 086-1614645.

After several months in production Dundalk Youth Theatre will present The Gossip Gang in An Tain theatre on November 19 and 20. This original piece of theatre is the work of the Dundalk Youth Theatre students under the guidance of Pat McKenna and Edwina Albrecht. The students spent their mid-term break in rehearsals for

their November performance. The theatre group which is based in the Black Box Theatre in DkIT, developed a new piece of theatre for young people, by young people under the direction of Edwina and Pat from page to stage.

The Gossip Gang was created and written by the company and scripted by Don McCamphill.

The plot is set on a beach resort in Co. Louth, when three

families’ lives become intertwined by gossip, rumour and miscommunication add a beach party to the mix and sparks will fly when the truth comes out.

A local national school will host a Pop Up shop as a part of a school fundraiser this November. The Parents Association of Kilkerley National School is running the pop up shop on Friday November 20 in the Long Walk Shopping Centre. The association is seeking donations of quality clothes, handbags, bric-abrac, books, toys, CDs, DVDs and small items of furniture. This initiative by the parents association is set to raise much-needed funds for the school.

Kilkerley National School has grown in numbers in recent years and it now has over 200 students in attendance.

The school requires funds for outdoor equipment and general items for the ever-growing school population. There is also the hope to eventually generate a separate fund for some of the school’s students who have learning disabilities, according to Yvonne Quigley of the Parents Association.

“The event is set to raise much

needed funds for the school and will go towards outdoor equipment with an aim to create a separate fund for students with learning disabilities who may need assessments and specific equipment”, explaind Yvonne.

“This highlights an issue facing many parents across the countrywho have children with learning disabilities. Often children who do not present high on the autistic spectrum will generally take much longer to get assessed. The lengthy waiting lists for assessments can cause an additional challenge for parents to provide for their own child’s needs.

Sometimes children need a follow up assessment that is not free, which can cost parents over €400.

The pop- up shop will benefit members of the Kilkerley community but if you would like to donate items or contribute you can leave donations for collection in the community centre or the shop on Friday morning November 20. If you have items that need to be collected contact Yvonne on 087-2231024.

School celebrates its many links to All-Ireland win SCOIL Uí Mhuirí were delighted to welcome members of the Louth Ladies Junior Football team to the school recently to celebrate their recent success.

There are strong links between the team and Scoil Uí Mhuirí with past pupils Grace Lynch, Sarah Byrne, Emer Murray all members of the team along with the school’s, PE teacher Susan Byrne also played against Scotland in the final at

Man flew back to collect Social Welfare money

A Dutch national who claimed Social Welfare payments while living outside the country claimed he didn’t realise that he was doing anything wrong.

Dirk Verdoorn with an address at 10 Herberts Drive, Crumlin, was arrested on May 1 this year after he had collected the money from Dublin St, Post Office.

Dundalk District Court was told that the Department of Social Welfare estimated that they were out €8,110 in Jobseekers Benefit between July 2014 and April 2015. In evidence it was stated that he was not residing in

the country at the time but that he was flying in and out. When he was arrested he accepted that he was not resident in Ireland.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that Mr Verdoorn, was living here when he made the initial application and entitled to the benefit.

However, during the period he was living here for up to two weeks at a time as he sought employment.

As he was coming back looking for work he felt he was entitled to the benefit.

Mr Lavery pointed out that

his client didn’t understand that he couldn’t leave the country and that this constituted a technical breach. It wasn’t a case that he was manipulating the system as he wasn’t employed elsewhere.

The solicitor pointed out that the defendant has since found work and that he co-operated fully at all times and made frank admissions. He added that a conviction would have serious consequences for his future.

Judge Flann Brennan ordered a Probation Report and adjourned the case to February 10.

Dundalk’s Santa Fun Run will attempt double world record

The first record attempt will take place at 9am with 20 personnel from Aiken Barracks dancing a Conga Line for 10km through the streets of Dundalk.

Banned for two years A MAN who had been convicted on nine occasions of driving without insurance was banned for two years after pleading guilty to another charge at Dundalk District Court.

Oliver McDonagh of 152 Oaklawns,

Dundalk, was stopped at Coes Road on June 27 this year and admitted driving without insurance. The vehicle was seized by Gardai.

Solicitor Frank McDonnell stated that Mr McDonagh, who had 64 previous con-

victions, had not been in difficulty for over five years. He added that the 40-year-old had a child who suffered from ill-health.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 fine and disqualified from driving for two years.

Concern over slow pace of refurbishment at St Josephs, Ardee SINN Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has expressed concern at the slow pace of progress toward the refurbishment of St Joseph’s Ardee.

The Louth TD said that he has visited long stay facility which currently provides 20 nursing Home Support Scheme beds, on a number of occasions.

“Almost two years ago a refurbishment plan was put in place to bring St. Josephs up to HIQA Environmental Standards by this year.

“It was expected that a planning application would be made in the following months with a contractor being ap-

pointed before the end of 2014. Actual construction was expected to take between six months and a year to complete”, he stated.

In a Parliamentary Question submitted to the Minister for Health the Louth TD asked if St. Joseph’s had received its full €750,000 capital investment funding to meet HIQA standards.

“In a HSE response to me last week it was confirmed that the capital funding has been allocated however it pointed out that ‘the HSE are still waiting the granting of full planning permissions from the Louth County Council’.

“I have now written to Louth County Manager Joan Martin asking for the council’s time frame for dealing with planning matters relating to St. Joseph’s.

I am concerned that this process has taken too long and that consequently residents are being forced to remain in conditions that do not meet HIQAs standard”, added Mr Adams.

“The staff, residents and families are to be commended for their campaign in recent years to defend St. Joseph’s and to ensure that it receives the necessary funding to keep it up to HIQA standards”, he concluded.

St Vincent’s Art students certainly put their creativity to good use recently when they took part in a Print-making workshop in Creative Spark.

They won the day’s tuition earlier this year when they took Best Over-all School in a competition. Teachers Caoimhe Woods, Leanne

Mullen and Carmel Clyne along with the ten lucky girls learned how to make screen prints, using photographic and hand-drawn imagery.

Under the expert eye of tutor Heather Cassidy the group followed the process of coating the screen, exposing the image and printing onto pa-

per or fabric.

The Creative Spark Print Studio was launched in 2014 and provides facilities in screenprinting, etching and digital printing. They aim to provide high quality workshops to both children and adults and they also offer professional training to artists.

Arrested for his own safety

A man who consumed alcohol while on medication and became intoxicated to such a level that he was a source of danger to himself, was arrested for his own safety.

As a result, Stan Domadej of 28 St Bridgets Tce, Dundalk, was fined

€200 when he pleaded guilty to a public order offence.

Dundalk District Court heard that on July 2 this year, Gardai were called to St Mary’s Road where they observed the defendant on the street. He was intoxicated, incoherent and

unsteady on his feet.

The Gardai felt it wasn’t safe to leave him there as he was a danger to himself and others.

Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, stated that her client only had a couple of drinks on the night but he had been put on new medication and the

combination had a bad effect on him. However, as a result of the incident, he had learned a lesson as he now knows his limitations.

In convicting on a charge of intoxication in a public place, Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 fine.

A NEW drama group is seeking cast members for their upcoming radio drama. Ann Callan is hoping to recruit interested members of the public to take part in a different type of drama production.

The drama is based in the North East the main protagonists are two brothers, who run a family business. These two strong independent characters don’t always see eye to eye.

There is a supporting cast of characters, including their respective families and the company staff.

The drama focuses on the everyday trials and tribulations of the family, with running themes of rivalry, jealously with a nice mix of love intertwined in the plot.

The production team are currently seeking voice actors who are interested in volunteering in order to bring this drama to life.

Friday 13th is lucky Foroige Club wins citizenship award for local author News

Friday the 13th may be unlucky for some but that’s not the case for Carlingford resident Paul Burns who will be celebrating the release of his debut novel on that date.

Paul who writes under the name PG Burns will release ‘Attrition of the Gods’ on Friday November 13 and according to the man himself writing the novel has been the most satisfying thing he has done to date.

“I have to say it was a wonderful feeling to complete the book and to see the finished product having worked so hard on it over the last couple of years. It’s a multi-faceted conspiracy thriller which jumps between different time scales and throughout the book there are shadowy forces in the background influencing every major event throughout the human race”, explained Paul.

“It’s going to be a trilogy and I’ve already begun work for the follow up. I’m originally from

England and had a normal life over there with a house, 9 to 5 job etc but I felt that life wasn’t for me and I decided to move to Ireland the home of my ancestors.

“I settled in Carlingford which I find so inspiring for getting your creative juices flowing.

to pinch myself at the realisation that I have one coming out next week.

I’m delighted with how it has turned out and hopefully people pick it up and enjoy it”, stated Paul.

Portrait of a winner

Many tributes have been paid to Dundalk FC over the last number of weeks, and one fan has used his own particular gift to honour manager, Stephen Kenny.

Michael Grant from Fr Murray Park, decided to put his artistic talents to good use by painting a portrait of the all-conquering manager, which he has titled ‘Portrait of a King’.

“Stephen has done a lot for the town and I just wanted to give something back”, explained Michael who has been painting as a hobby for many years.

He admits that he loves doing portraits and among those he is most pleased with are paintings of musicians Bob Dylan and Rory Gallagher.

Volunteer management LOUTH Volunteer Centre’s next one-day Volunteer Management Training Programme will take place on Tuesday November 17 in Dundalk and Tuesday November 24 in Drogheda, from 9:30am to 5pm.

A fundraising project to travel to Lourdes to help the sick and elderly, carried out by Kilkerley Foróige Club, has been honoured at the Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards 2015.

First win for rugby club Dundalk recorded their first victory in the All-Ireland League on Saturday last after beating Kanturk 21-8 on the Mill Rd. After a turbulent start to the league Dundalk have finally gotten some valuable league points but more importantly put in an encouraging performance.

As the Marshes celebrate its tenth birthday this week the shopping centre’s manager Harry Traynor has been looking back at ten years in business in Dundalk.

“I can remember the first day we opened like it was yesterday. The night before the grand opening the workmen were here until all hours putting the finishing touches to the place and making sure we were ready for the big day. I slept in a portacabin in the car park that night and was up early the next morning helping to put the finishing touches to the place before the crowds descended on us”, explained Harry.

“It’s been a very enjoyable ten years here in Dundalk but obviously as we are in the retail sector we have faced some huge challenges in our time here. We all seen the pictures in the

“We’ve always been challenged to keep our heads above water as we’re a wee bit isolated down here and as well as that there was a strong black market, competition from Newry and of course the reces-

sion which crippled our economy.

However we worked hard and we stayed patient and thankfully there has been an upturn over the last couple of years and the Newry factor isn’t as strong anymore. People have more money in their pockets and we as a shopping centre have a commitment to strengthen and improve retail here in Dundalk”, noted Harry These are exciting

times for the shopping centre with massive expansion plans underway for the centre and big name retail outfits moving into the centre in the next couple of months.

H+M, Diesel and Vera Moda are all moving into the Marshes and Harry says he is almost at full capacity in the centre for the first time in years.

“Obviously we are delighted with the imminent arrival of the H+M,

Diesel and Vera Moda and it’s great to see the centre operating at almost full capacity. We will celebrate our birthday this week and there will be plenty of special offers and giveaways in the centre for our loyal customers. I hope to see them over the next few days”, added Harry.

The official party start on Saturday morning with the unveiling of a commemorative birthday plaque by Eilish O’Mahoney, wife of the late Canice O’Mahoney, Town Engineer and author, who was involved in the initial development and naming of Marshes Shopping Centre.

This was followed by a 1,000 balloon drop which gave lucky shoppers the chance to win one of 100 prizes.

In the afternoon the great entertainment continued with balloon modelling, a walk about magician, face painting, and pop-up cinema.

The Europe Direct Soapbox Public Speaking event was held in Dundalk Library on Thursday, November 5.

Chaired by Independent MEP Marian Harkin, there were two competitions for Under 18 and Over 19 speakers.

The Under 18 category was won by Ciara McLoughlin of St. Vincent’s Secondary School and the Over 19 by Mick Park of Droimin, Dunleer.

The judges of the Europe Direct competition at the event with Chairperson Marian Harkin MEP were Loyola Brown, Marian Harkin MEP; Kevin Moran, Bernie Fennell, Co. Librarian and Marie Flynn.

Ciara and Mick will now go forward to contest the All Ireland Final at Farmleigh on November 16 when the winner’s prize will be €1,000 and a visit for two to Brussels sponsored by Marian Harkin MEP. The great entertainment in the Spirit Store continues on Wednesday November 11 with the Ye Vagabonds free downstairs at 9pm Just over a year ago they crossed paths with videographer Myles O’Reilly (Arbutus Yarns) and a friendship quickly formed.

Myles filmed the brothers playing in their local haunts around the village of Stoneybatter. The success of these videos has sent Ye Vagabonds on a wonderful journey over the past year.

They have shared stages with Booka Brass Band, Lisa O’Neill, The Lost Brothers and, most recently, Glen Hansard.

The followning night will see Aine Cahill on stage with tickets €8.

Aine Cahill is a 20 year old singer/songwriter from Cavan. Her love of the torch singers and jazz chanteuses of the 1940s and 50s lured her into the world of music.

Drove through crossroads A man who caused an accident when he drove through a crossroads without stopping was fined €350 after being convicted of careless driving.

Foroige clubs ready for busy year The Foroige movement continues to be strong in Louth and local clubs are now back in action and looking forward to an fun-filled year.

The Foróige approach to youth work is underpinned by a strong philosophy which celebrates uniqueness and creativity while allowing members to take responsibility, make a difference and learn from every situation.

Louth clubs include Kilkerley, Sandpit, FYI, Dillionstown, Mell and Moneymore in Drogheda, and the overall elected committee is as follows: Eamonn Mullen, Mell; Treasurer Marie O Brien, FYI; Secretary Ann Marie McKeown and PRO is Sandra Murray.

It promises to be a busy year for all the young people and this would not happen without the amazing leaders and volun-

teers involved that give their time and dedication each week.

The Louth committee also welcomed the new Regional Youth Officer, Breda O’Rourke, to the team who has many years experience in this profession and Foroige.

She spoke about how excited she was to start working with us and the committee all feel the same as the District Council play a big part in Foroige clubs.

The monthly meetings help catch up, exchange ideas and concerns.
