Homeowners in Bishops Court will find out this Friday if their battle to stop the erection of a 38kv ESB sub-station directly beside their homes has been successful.

The sub-station is being built on the site of the new Coláiste Chú Chulainn school which is currently being built at the Marshes in Dundalk.

Kay Corbett and her husband Desie will be directly affected by the location of the new sub-station as it will be adjoined to their back wall. According to Kay it is not just the fact that they will be waking up to see an eyesore in their backyard each day that is bothering them. It is the more important issue of health for themselves, their neighbours, family and friends which is the burning issue.

“We have said from the very start that we have no problem with a new school being built beside us. That is not the issue for any of the residents in Bishops Court.

Community in mourning after death of gentleman Sean in fire Dundalk Leader 11th October 2017

The local community is in mourning following the tragic death of Sean McGee in a house fire at Donaghmore, Kilkerley, on Saturday morning.

The 84-year-old grandfather was well-known in the local area having worked as a stonemason.

Mr McGee’s son was also in the house at the time of the fire and was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, were

again handed a tough draw in the quarterfinals with Poland standing between them and a place in the semifinals. Unfortunately the experience of the Poles counted for a lot in this game and after a competitive opening half the Poles ran riot against a fading Irish side to record a 5-0 victory.

Ireland finished off the tournament with a creditable display against Italy eventually losing 2-0 which meant they finished the tournament in sixth place. According to Garry, a tough tackling midfielder, the whole experience was hugely enjoyable and he along with his teammates now hope to build on their 6th place finish in future tournaments.

“It was a very well organised tournament with some great displays of football skill and desire to win from every country.

“We got to play in the quarter-finals of the Euros after coming out of the group of death thanks to an excellent 4-0 win against Greece.

We came with a goal to finish 5th or 6th and ultimately we have achieved that,” stated Garry.

“We have given a good account of ourselves and other teams now know how much the Irish team have improved. This has been a good step forward for us but now we want to break into the top four so we will continue to work hard and keep on improving,” promised Garry.

Dundalk Sub Aqua Club ‘Try A Dive’ Dundalk Sub Aqua Club are recruiting new members this month offering two ‘Try a Dive’ nights in Aura Leisure Centre for members of the public to test the waters in a safe environment under qualified instructors.

Dundalk Sub Aqua Club was set up in 2001 by a number of experienced local divers and since then the club has grown from strength to strength taking on new people every year. The club is now 48 members strong and travel all over the country for dives and to help in search and rescue missions. Recently the club travelled to Mayo to help in the search for crew members of Rescue 116.

The club are hosting two open ‘Try a Dive’ evenings on Wednesday October 18 and October 25 in Aura Dundalk Leisure Centre from 7pm. This session is free for anyone over 18 that would like to experience a dive.

Qualified club members will be there to ensure that everyone enjoys their first diving experience.

The club in a position to take on 12 new recruits and those that choose to go forward will take part in a com-

prehensive training programme over the winter months. Initially, they will learn to snorkel and in the process become both more comfortable and water fit. Following the snorkelling, they are then introduced to the Scuba gear and taught all the basic skills of diving. In conjunction with the practical sessions in the pool, there are a series of lectures with the necessary information to develop safe diving techniques.

There are many reasons to take up diving, from discovering a new world beneath the waves, to meeting new people and making friends for life.

Scuba diving is open to everybody, all that is required is a normal degree of health and fitness and a desire to have fun!

Dundalk Sub Aqua club generally dive every weekend, weather permitting. Most of our local dives are in Greenore, with a choice of many sites to choose from. Regular dive trips are also organised to Donegal, Rathlin Island, Strangford Lough,and Mayo.

The protest by staff and students at DkIT

DkIT lecturers and students demonstrate Lecturers and students stood side by side at DkIT on Wednesday as Institutes of Technology (IoTs) throughout Ireland staged national demonstrations.

The action is part of a campaign organised by the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) and supported by the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) to highlight the crisis in Higher Education brought about by government cuts.

Since 2008 government funding to DkIT

has been cut by 36%, while student numbers have risen by 32%.

Addressing the demonstration Dundalk IT TUI Chair Kenneth Sloane stated ‘Institutes of Technology were created in recognition that access to Higher Education had historically been largely restricted to a privileged elite.

Since their creation, by providing access to a high quality and affordable higher education service throughout all regions of the country,

Institutes of Technology have been an engine for wealth creation, opportunity and social equality. However all this is being jeopardized by the underfunding of the sector. This crisis is a direct result of years of government cuts. The purpose of this campaign is to make adequate funding of IoTs a priority in the political arena. The solution to this crisis lies with local politicians and the Minister for Education.’

Took mother’s car without permission A man who took his mother’s car without permission was given a 12 month suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court.

Shane Dixon (26) 526 Aisling Park, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offence on July 18 this year.

He took the car from 10 Park St, Dundalk, on July 17 and after his mother reported it missing he was spotted the following day by Gardai at Coulter Place.

The defendant, who had 36 previous offences and had previously been disqualified for six years, was

not insured.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that his client realises he shouldn’t have taken the car and driven while not insured, while he conceded that his record is very poor. He asked that the court would not deprive him of his liberty.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a 12-month suspended sentence and disqualified for five years on the no insurance charge, while he also imposed a one month suspended sentence in respect of the no licence charge.

Jimmy picks up gold medal in national event Dundalk’s Cucuhulainn Cycling Club continued it’s recent run of good form in National Championships, when it improved upon two National silver medals two weeks ago, with it’s first gold of the season.

Sunday saw the country’s cycling community descend upon Castledaly in Co. Galway for the National Hill Climb Champs.

Local stalwart of cycling, Jimmy Flynn, claimed the gold in the Masters 60 category, beating off Sean Hargan of Belfast and Cork’s Tom Daly.

Jimmy is no stranger to claiming national medals, however this is the first time he has topped the podium.

Rehabcare embrace healthy eating

There was a couple of special guest speakers down in RehabCare on Friday morning to teach the staff and attendees about the importance of healthy eating.

Dundalk FC community officer Liam Burns along with current Dundalk FC central defender Brian Gartland were promoting the idea of healthy eating and educating all in RehabCare about which food and drink to stay away from.

According to Liam, the fact that Brian has been part of a Dundalk squad that has won the league three years in succession hasn’t come about by accident.

“A lot of you go to the games on a Friday night and maybe think that all those good performances just come about because they are naturally good players but there’s an awful lot that goes on behind the scenes. Along with all

the training the guys do I would say that nutrition is very very important in the club. Every player must ensure that they eat all the right foods and ensure that they don’t put any rubbish in their bodies. Stephen Kenny is driving this and he makes sure that every player sis doing the right thing,” explained Liam.

Next up was Brian Gartland who told all what foods to embrace and what to stay away from. Using a bowl and some sugar he demonstrated just how much

sugar is included in every day snack choices such as chocolate bars and fizzy drinks. He also gave an insight into the diet of a footballer.

“Our boot room is full of bananas apples and all kinds of fruit.

We get crates of it delivered to Oriel Park each week and it is up to us to ensure we are eating healthily all the time.

Each month we are asked to step on the scales and get weighed and check for body fat.

If we go above a certain level we don’t play and

we also get fined.

“We eat plenty of vegetables and chicken and we only really treat ourselves after we win a trophy. It can be tough sometimes but we know that if we want to continue playing at this level then we have to be disciplined,” stated Brian.

After the talk it was suggested that RehabCare introduce a health week in the upcoming months with Brian Gartland offering to come down again and help to give a few handy tips to all in attendance.

As we have pointed out to the project management, planners must have regard to the protection of the health of citizens. Our fears on the Electro Magnetic Field emissions and the potential dangers to our health from these have not been listened to by Louth County Council and they don’t seem to be prepared to make any compromises.

“It has been a very stressful time for all of us and we can only hope that we get some joy in the court this Friday,” concluded Kay.

Last weekend saw 21 of the club members travel to the ever popular Best of the Best Competition in Kingswood Dublin with club coach Patricia McQuil-

With only five weeks remaining until the 2017 World Kickboxing Championships in Orlando seven members of the Cobra-Kan team are also very busy training

to compete as part of the Irish team that are travelling to the USA for the competition. Next weekend the club will be present in Dunnes, Ard Easmuinn Dundalk packing groceries trying to raise some much needed funds that will be used to both buy equipment for the club and also to support the fighters that are travelling to the USA as part of the Ireland team.

500 not out for Collette Collette O’Hagan reached another special milestone in her extraordinary long distance running career as she completed her 500th marathon in Monaghan over the weekend.

The 68-year old from Bay Estate came to marathon running relatively late completing her first marathon in Dublin in 1990 aged 40.

Since then she has clocked up a further 499 marathons in the intervening 27 years and last weekend she finished number 500 surrounded by family and many of her friends from the North-East Runners.

Saturday’s marathon in Monaghan was the second of three marathons Collette completed last weekend and the day could not have went better according to the Bay Estate native.

“The race couldn’t have went better and I have to say the atmosphere during the race was brilliant and made it one of my most enjoyable marathon’s to date.

Monaghan is always a very well organised event and I enjoyed the course immensely. I had loads of my family and friends cheering me in at the finishing line which made the day very special for me. There was plenty of my running mates from the North East Runners out as well

which was lovely to see.

“After the race we went home and celebrated with a takeaway and a couple of proseccos but I didn’t go to mad as I had another race on Sunday,” laughed Collette.

“I’d like to thank my sponsors Fyffes who have marked my

milestone by donating money to the North Louth Hospice. I absolutely love long distance running and I have no intentions of stopping anytime soon. I still feel as though I have plenty more races in my legs and hopefully I will be celebrating number 600 soon,” she added.

Medals for Dundalk Karate

Dundalk Karate’s, Liam Hoey and Catherine Marcus, were among 443 competitors who descended upon the National Indoor Arena in Dublin recently, where they competed in Kata (form) and Kumite (fighting).

Forty three clubs from as far away as Canada, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Scotland, Belgium, Wales, Luxembourg, England and all over Ireland, came together to compete at this years ONAKAI Irish Open.

After completing her Katas and having reached the final in her category, Catherine was awarded a Silver Medal while Liam was unfortunate this time round and narrowly missed out on a medal.

Kumite was next inline for Liam Hoey and Catherine Marcus both Dundalk Karate competierine and once again her hard tors, and with Liam up first this missed out on a medal.

Last to compete for Dundalk work paid of as she gained a time round. Again he turned in impressive displays but just Karate in Kumite was Cath- Bronze Medal.

Third conviction for no insurance A woman who was convicted of driving without insurance for a third time was banned from the road for 12 months at Dundalk District Court.

Thulisile Ngubeni (36) of 104 Ath Leathan, Racecourse Road, Dundalk, was stopped

by Gardai at a checkpoint but failed to produce her documents.

The defence solicitor stated that her client, who had been in Ireland since 2002, had been insured on the car but it had lapsed. The mother of five who

had a South African licence is a single mother and on this occasion had to take her children somewhere.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €100 fine and stated that he had no choice but to impose a 12 month disqualification.

St.Vincent’s school was filled with positive vibes last week with the official launch of the upcoming 5km run.

Students and staff gathered together as former Operation Transformation participant Yvonne Keenan Ross spoke candidly about her weight loss journey as part of the popular RTE programme.

She described her initial doubts and hesitation when applying for the series which sees five candidates follow a healthy-eating plan and fitness regime, which also included the weekly Park Run She encouraged students to try to build activity into their everyday lives, even if it’s only walking for 30 minutes a few times a week and stressed the

importance of keeping fit for health and mental well-being.

Two of St.Vincent’s Athletics stars also addressed the school.

Patience Jumbo-Gula and Kate O’Connor both achieved European success this summer and they too encouraged the girls to get off their sofas and get involved in the event.

Patience put in a phenomenal performance in July when she ran a time of 11.59 seconds to win a bronze medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Hungary.

Meanwhile Kate finished eighth in the heptathlon, and set a new youth record in doing so. She was the youngest competitor in the whole competition aged only 16.

Head girls Aoife McGeough and Amy O’Donoghue also encouraged the girls to eat healthy and to ‘make good choices’ each day, particularly when choosing school lunches, remarking on the impact this can have on performance in school and concentration levels.

Principal Deirdre Matthews thanked Margaret Gamble and the Parents’ Council for their hard work and dedication in organising this year’s run which take place on Sunday 22nd October, leaving from the school gym.

After the huge success of last year’s inaugural event they are hoping for another fun-filled fundraiser, details of which can be found on the school website.

Dundalk to benefit from second draft of National Development Plan

The Government’s second draft of the 2040 National Development has seen a shift in the targeted growth areas and a greater emphasis on collaboration with Northern Ireland. It now recognises the importance of the M1 corridor when considering the island of Ireland.

The submission of Louth County Council, arguing for a linear city in Louth and the Dundalk Chamber submission which extended that to Newry from Drogheda has been taken on board.

Both of these submissions argued, in different styles, that the North East and Louth offered a unique opportunity to work with the North in developing infrastructure and development. Louth CC argued for the “Linear City” while Dundalk Chamber pointed out that we were one of only two counties that had a 50% urban population. The area therefore has the critical mass to be an economic generator, separate to Dublin/Belfast but working with the two cities.

The plan now recognises the unique position of the M1 corridor and by extension the huge potential in Newry, Dundalk and Drogheda. The report highlights the need to encourage growth in the urban areas of the M1. It recognises the unique advantages of the Dundalk Newry “Twin City” proposed in 2003 at the Ireland Harvard Conference 2003.

Paddy Malone who led the team along with Rodd Bond and Pat McCormick (both DKIT) points out that this win will mean that the IDA will still see this area as a prime location for FDI. In addition Government Agencies and related organisations will be encouraged and instructed to see development in the M1 corridor as well as the cities of Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford.

Two local swimmers, Patrick Harmon, who compete nationally for ADSC Dundalk Swim Club were part of a hundred strong group of Irish Swimmers who celebrated National Swimming Day, by breaking the Guinness World Record 100 x 50m Relay at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre, Dublin. The 100 swimmers collectively set a time of 46 minutes 38.04 seconds breaking the previous record by over 9 minutes. Participants raised in excess of €10,000 with all proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society and Northern Ireland Hospice.

Snooker league concludes with memorable awards night A fantastic night was had in the Commercial Club in Dundalk at the Peadar Callan Summer Snooker League presentation night.

A great turnout saw all the winners and runners-up collect their awards after a hard fought season.

Guests of honour were Peadar Callan’s family as the attendance also celebrated the life of a fantastic man who is sadly missed by all his friends and family.

With the new Peadar Callan Memorial Cup taking the centre piece of the awards table it ensured that Peadar would be forever remembered on the local snooker

scene for many years to come.

Peadar’s family presented awards to the winners on the night with Team Thompson picking up the league and cup double, while league runners up were Team Ralph and cup runners up Team O’Hanlon.

The individual award was picked up

by Glen Duffy who also captured the player of the year award with Dominic O’Connor picking up individual runner up and high break award.

Doubles winners were Aaron Callan and Steve McBride, with runners up Mickey Ralph and JJ McArdle.

Sold drugs to clear brother’s debt

A man who was selling drugs to help clear his brother’s debt was given the chance to avoid jail after his case was adjourned for a Community Service Report.

Andrew Maguire (24) of 47 Maple Close, Dundalk, admitted selling drugs to undercover Gardai on three occasions of an operation to tackle the sale of drugs in Dundalk.

The court heard that on June 8 last year a Garda purchased three bags of diamorphine valued at €50. She contacted the defendant on two further occasions and arranged meetings, purchasing €20 worth of the drug on June 14 and June 21.

Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, stated that the defendant, who has nine previous convictions, accepted that he was in a difficult position.

She stated that Mr Maguire’s brother was battling addiction and had a debt that spiralled out of control. He was told that if he undertook this work that the debt would be covered. She added that the defendant was willing to undertake Community Service.

Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to November 21 and stated that he would consider 240 hours Community Service in lieu of 12 months.

O’Connells players and supporters celebrate with the Seamus Flood Cup on Sunday

O’Connells GFC are back in the big time O’Connells are celebrating a return to Senior Football after claiming the Louth Intermediate Championship title on Sunday afternoon.

The Castlebellingham side proved too strong for Clan na Gael and eventually came out on top with a 1-11 to 0-8 win.

Substituted Sean Connolly was one of the heroes for the winners as he scored the only goal of the game just before the interval, while the O’Connells had the Man of the Match in

Jackie Agnew.

It was a bitterly disappointing afternoon at Dunleer for the Dundalk men and as they suffered a fourth Intermediate Final defeat since 2011 and once again missed out on reclaiming a place in the senior ranks.

The game was a relatively even affair in the opening quarter with the Clans edging 0-3 to 0-2 ahead when Conall McKeever landed a point.

However, the O’Connells hit back and points from Niall

Conlon and Robert Quigley had them back in front before Connolly’s goal saw his side lead by 1-7 to 0-3 at half time.

The Clans fought back with the help of points from Billy Smith and Stephen Coleman, but the O’Connells remained in control and never looked in any danger of surrendering their lead.

After the final whistle, O’Connells captain Stuart Reynolds, lifted the Seamus Flood Cup in front of the ecstatic supporters.

Stabannon Tidy Towns celebrate being crowned national winners Stabannon Tidy Towns has been crowned the winner of the Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) Village and Small Town Award at the National TidyTowns Competition 2017.

The GLT provides annually a total of €5,000 in prize money which is distributed amongst the winners of the Village and Small Town and Large Town

and Urban Centre subcategories, with a €1,000 bonus going to the overall winner.

Established in 1998, Stabannon Tidy Towns works in the townlands of Stabannon, Drumcashel, Roodstown, Drumgoolestown, Charleville, Braganstown and Poolbrock to reduce the level of incorrectly disposed litter and improve the environment of the

communities in which they live.

Since 2007, the GLT has sponsored a category award in the TidyTowns competition as part of an ongoing awareness campaign aimed at highlighting the issue of littered gum amongst the public.

The award serves as an acknowledgement of the consistent efforts being made by organisations working within

their communities to reduce the levels of litter disposed of on the streets of their respective localities.

Chairman of the GLT, Paul Kelly said: “The TidyTowns Awards are a fantastic opportunity for local communities to come together and showcase their commitment to tackling litter in the towns and villages in which they live.’’

Another great day for the kids at Irish Martial Art Academy Congratulations to the fourteen Dundalk and Carlingford Irish Martial Arts students who travelled to The Rumble Martial Arts Competition on Sunday October 1.

There was great excitement at registration as the children prepared to go up against a large number of their peers in there specialised sections.

DkIT moves up rankings in university guide Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has been named among Ireland’s Top 4 Institutes of Technology according to the latest University Guide produced annually by the Sunday Times.

The latest ranking sees the Institute jump up two places from last year.

The Sunday Times Guide is one of the most comprehensive, independent guides to Irish undergraduate courses produced in cooperation with each third-level institution in Ireland.

It is assessed under a number of criteria including new developments, facilities and links with industry and research.

It is often used as a barometer for potential students and parents around the country in selecting third level in-

stitutions.

According to the Guide, DkIT is the leading Institute of Technology in terms of research performance. In 2016 the Institute secured more than €9.5m in funding in support of its research programmes.

A number of projects included cross-border collaboration with other institutions including Queens University Belfast, University of Ulster and The University of West of the Scotland.

Research success has a direct impact for DKIT students by improving the quality of education through a continued focus on researchinformed teaching and increased investment.

DkIT was also praised for its provision of small class sizes for students and its focus on building

strong links with employers and businesses in the North East region and beyond.

Fergal Harte was the winner of Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition with the six handicapper compiling a super round of 42pts to win by three points.

His gross round of 36 points was also the best gross score of the day.

Harte scored at every hole and his round was made up of two four point holes, six three pointers, six two pointers and four one pointers.

The two four pointers were courtesy of birdies at the par four

third and par five seventh to help record a front nine score of 22pts which also included three point pars at the fourth and eighth.

He shot 20pts over the back nine and the key to that score was four successive three point holes as he birdied the par three 13th and par four 14th and then parred the low index par four 15th and 16th.

That left him three points clear of the field with Cathal Muckian (10), Anthony O’Donoghue (14) and

Seamus Kelly (18) all shooting 39pts and claiming the three category prizes for their efforts.

The Clermont Corale will perform a concert in Dundalk Golf Club on Friday, October 20 at 8pm.

Admission to the event is €15 and all proceeds from the night will go towards the Bone Marrow for Leukemia Trust. Tickets are available in the Bar. Dinner can be arranged separately by contacting the restaurant.

Tuesday the 26th of September was National European Languages Day and in order to celebrate this the Transition Year Students of Ardee Community School organised a whole day of events dedicated to the language, culture, food and music of all the European countries associated with the school.

The school has many students from various countries throughout Europe attending and they gave presentations about their language and culture. The students took pleasure in running a poster competition, an essay competition, a traditional costumes competition, quizzes, food tasting and film projections. It was a very successful day where all students and teachers in the school spoke in the various European Languages for the day.

The Locksmith’s Song at An Tain The Locksmith’s Song will be hosted at An Táin Arts Centre on Saturday October 21 at 2pm.

Featuring puppetry, paper art, shadow play and storytelling, it is performed by one of Ireland’s most experienced performers for young audiences, Eoin Lynch.

A locksmith rediscovers memories of his lost mother’s love, and of the old man who showed him the magic that locks can hold. With each memory his heart grows a little lighter. This is a story full of action and adventure that tells of the

love and bond between a Mother and her son.

Through puppetry, paper art, shadow play and storytelling Eoin Lynch weaves a tale of courage and daring, of the things we lose and eventually find. Suitable for ages seven years plus.

HSE urges people to get flu vaccine

The HSE are urging people in at-risk groups to get vaccinated against influenza as figures show that vaccine uptake rates in people aged 65 and over increased in Ireland last year.

Welcoming the findings, the HSE’s Flu Lead, Dr. Kevin Kelleher, Assistant National Director Public Health said: “The flu vaccine is a lifesaver because flu can be a very serious and sometimes deadly disease, with potentially 1,000 flu related deaths in Ireland during a severe flu season.

“Indications so far suggest that national uptake figures show that 54% of people aged 65 and over who hold a medical card or GP visit card received the flu vaccine during the 2016-2017 flu season. This uptake rate is on a par with the 2015-2016 flu season. However, it is less than the World Health Organization target of 75%.

“People need to remember that flu causes severe illness and death in Ireland every year. That is why those who are most vulnerable to the complications of flu need to get vaccinated. The flu vaccine is the only defence against flu, yet every year less than half of the atrisk groups get vaccinated.”

“The vaccine reduces infection and associated illnesses and hospitalisation. Flu is very infectious and can cause potentially serious illnesses especially for older people, those who have a chronic illness, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women. Seasonal flu vaccine can be given at any stage of pregnancy and also protects the baby. The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu as it does not contain any live flu virus and all those at risk should get vaccinated as soon as possible this year to make sure that they are protected.

“The symptoms of flu usually develop over a matter of a few hours and include a high temperature, sore muscles, dry cough, headache and sore throat. Flu is different from the common cold, which tends to come on more gradually and usually includes a runny nose and a normal temperature.

“Flu is spread by coughing and sneezing so people should cover their nose and mouth with a tissue, disposing of the tissue as soon as possible and washing their hands with soap and water as soon as possible to help prevent the spread of flu.

“Anyone who gets flu should stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids and use over-the-counter flu remedies to ease symptoms.

People in high-risk categories should contact their GP if they develop flu symptoms.” said Dr Kelleher.
