A local man had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the gentry in Britain’s House of Lords after being invited to attend a function to help former professional footballers deal with the challenges of retirement. Alan Gernon from Louth Village was the special guest at the function after being asked to attend by none other than former Irish international footballer, Niall Quinn, as he has written an indepth book on the subject. Alan’s book ‘Retired’ outlines the pitfalls and misery which await the majority of professional footballers when they retire from the game after their career’s come to an end. Continued on Page 8

Patrick claims Student of the Year award Marist student, Patrick Fu is celebrating after winning the Sky Sports - Living for Sport, Student of the Year Award for the Republic of Ireland. Fifteen-year-old Patrick is a Third Year student in St Marys College, after overcoming difficulties with the academic challenges of school life. Teacher Karla Doran believes his engagement with Sky Sports Living for Sport has played a big part in dealing with these difficulties and he has shown a remarkable improvement, with the result that he is now ready to take on the Junior Cert next month.
