A local man had the opportunity to rub shoulders with the gentry in Britain’s House of Lords after being invited to attend a function to help former professional footballers deal with the challenges of retirement.

Alan Gernon from Louth Village was the special guest at the function after being asked to attend by none other than former Irish international footballer, Niall Quinn, as he has written an indepth book on the subject.

Alan’s book ‘Retired’ outlines the pitfalls and misery which await the majority of professional footballers when they retire from the game after their career’s come to an end.

Patrick claims Student of the Year award Marist student, Patrick Fu is celebrating after winning the Sky Sports - Living for Sport, Student of the Year Award for the Republic of Ireland.

Fifteen-year-old Patrick is a Third Year student in St Marys College, after overcoming difficulties with the academic challenges of school life.

Teacher Karla Doran believes his engagement with Sky Sports Living for Sport has played a big part in dealing with these difficulties and he has shown a remarkable improvement, with the result that he is now ready to take on the Junior Cert next month.

Frances takes on a fundraising double A Blackrock woman is doing a charity double over the Bank Holiday weekend as she plans to get her hair chopped to provide wigs for cancer sufferers before taking part in the Women’s Mini Marathon.

Frances O’Neill will be getting her locks cut courtesy of Peter Mark’s in Dundalk so she can donate her ponytail to the Little Princess Trust who make wigs for young kids who lose their hair to cancer.

As well as that Frances will also run the Women’s Mini Marathon on Monday June 6 in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

This is not the first time Frances got her hair cut for charity. She also did it two years ago raising an impressive €1100 in the process. According

“There is a lack of transparency in there and we need to get the local council functioning as an agent for the people,”

Fine Gael TD for Louth, Peter Fitzpatrick, speaking in Dáil Éireann this week, called on the Minister for Justice to provide extra Garda resources in the Mid Louth district and to maintain the extra Garda presence which was introduced in the aftermath of the murder of Garda Tony Golden.

“Crime is a major problem in our society today, which affects every community throughout the country, including communities in County Louth.

“I am calling for extra Garda resources to be provided to the Mid Louth district, including Ardee. What is needed for this district is three sergeants and eight Gardaí”, stated Mr Fitzpatrick.

Conal and Kevin take on Hell and Back

Two local men are preparing to go through hell and back to help ensure local services for children with Down Syndrome are kept running.

Conal Kelleher and Kevin Haughey are taking part in the gruelling Hell and Back challenge which is considered to be Ireland’s toughest mental and physical endurance challenge. The participants must complete a 10-15km trail route crossing rivers and lakes, climbing hills and mountains and crawling through bogs.

The next event will take place on May 21 in Newtownstewart, Co. Tyrone and Conal and Kevin along with some of their friends will be at the start line as part of a fundraiser to raise money for the Louth Meath Down Syndrome Association. Earlier this year the Association were faced with a massive

challenge as the HSE announced a 60% cut in funding which meant that the Louth Meath Down Syndrome’s ‘Early Intervention Home School Teacher’ programme was put under threat.

Dundalk man Conal whose daughter Sadhbh has Down Syndrome fought vigorously alongside many other parents in Louth and Meath to reverse the cuts and they were eventually successful in their campaign as

the programme’s future was secured.

However the Louth Meath Down Syndrome Association are in urgent need of funding and they rely on the generosity of the public to support fundraisers to help them continue. According to Conal it was Kevin’s idea to take part in Hell and Back.

“We were looking for an idea to try and raise some money for Louth Meath Down Syndrome

Association and Kevin came up with Hell and Back. He put the idea up on facebook asking me if I’d be game to accept the challenge and as seeing as it was out in the public domain and my pride was at stake I had to say yes!” laughs Conal.

“We’ve been doing a bit of training over the last few weeks and we have 31 friends coming with us to take part including friends who are travelling all the way from Boston and London to do it. Down Syndrome Louth Meath represent more than two hundred families throughout the two counties and run a number of programmes on a completely voluntary basis including the ‘Early Intervention Home Teacher Programme’, speech and language therapy, and an adult literacy course.

The cost of running just these three programmes is €150,000 per year with state grants cov-

ering just €30,000 of that total. The balance is provided by fundraising which is why we’re doing this so hopefully people will come out and support us.

“We are having a barbeque in the Spirit Store between 4pm and 8pm after we hopefully complete Hell and Back and everybody is welcome to come down and enjoy some food and music.

“We have David Keenan, Finian and SAS playing as well as DJs spinning discs long into the night so it should be a great evening. I want to thank everybody who has helped us so far especially the Spirit Store, Malone Meats, Coyle Meats and McCormick’s butchers who are going to sponsor a load of hot dogs for us.

Entry is free but there will be buckets going around and anything you can afford to give will be greatly appreciated. ” stated Conal.

Cycling League Round 5

Round 5 of the Cycling League saw the race finish on top of the climb at Flagstaff. The race is a straight forward affair with the 38km course starting at the Sportsman’s Bar & Restaurant on the old Newry Road, heading out through Carlingford and Omeath.

In race 1 group 6 a three-man move of Tomas McCabe, Bryan McCrystal and Liam Dolan forged on ahead. As the line approached Dolan put in an attack to distance his rivals and take the flag solo, ahead of McCabe in second and McCrystal in third.

In Race 2, Owen Dawe, who had recently dropped down from Race 1 to race 2 was victorious on the night. The results on the night mean that visiting riders are dominating the league table with the top three places occupied by non Cuchulainn cyclits. South Down Armagh currently sit in first and second with William Loughlin and Martin Colgan respectively. Third position is Newry’s Ralph Ginesi. Meanwhile Rosenna Lynch is the leading woman.

On the leisure cycling front the club had over 10 cyclists head out to Mallorca to compete in the prestigious Mallorca 312. This event sees over 4,500 cyclists complete a full lap of the Spanish Mediterranean Island, for a distance of 312km.

The island is far from flat which makes for a considerably long and hard day’s riding.

This year’s event was also hindered by bad weather, which saw the rider’s get rained on for most of the day. However despite the conditions and unco-operative weather all the Cuchulainn Cyclists managed to complete the event. A testimony to their hard winter’s training.

Schools celebrate Book Week

Redeemer Girls and Realt na Mara pupils brought their favourite book characters to life last Friday as both schools celebrated National Book Week.

Children’s Book Week encourages children to enjoy new authors and books, and is celebrated in schools, libraries, homes, and bookstores during a selected week each May. From Jane Eyre to Miss Piggy, characters and authors were brought to life in all classrooms and according to Realt na Mara teacher Síle Holland the children and parents did themselves proud with their fine efforts.

“The children have put great effort into their costumes today and they have

done a great job. Book week is a very important event in the school as it helps encourage the children to pick up a book and read and help create a healthy interest in all things book related”, explained Síle.

O’Rourke commended all the pupils who had once again put so much effort into their costumes for book week. And he also had a special mention for the teachers who got into the spirit of things.

“The girls seem to come up with better costumes each year and there really is some

fantastic efforts again this year. The amount of time and effort they have put in is a credit to themselves and their parents. We also have teachers getting in on the act and they too have put together some fantastic costumes to help celebrate book week in the school,” stated Patrick.

Banned for two years

A man who told Gardai that he hadn’t been drinking but had taken cannabis before driving was banned from the road for two years.

Robert Menary of 43 An Cearnog, Toberona, Dundalk, was also fined €575 after pleading guilty to charges of drink driving and no insurance at Dundalk District Court.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that on December 12 last year Gardai’s attention was drawn to the defendant who was sitting in a car that was parked at a peculiar angle at a garage on the Dublin Road. The lights were on and the engine was running, while the defendant appeared distracted and confused. He was swaying in his seat while there were open drink containers in the car and a smell of intoxicants.

Mr Menary was arrested and taken to the station where he denied drinking alcohol but admitted taking cannabis. A sample taken revealed that he was over the limit for driving.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that it was his friend’s car and he had no reason for driving it. He had no licence or insurance.

Judge William Hamill imposed a six month disqualification for drink driving and a two-year ban for no insurance, with a total fine of €575.

New idea may revive Narrow Water Bridge

A new idea has been put forward that could get the Narrow Water Bridge project back on track.

It has been suggested that the bridge plan could be merged with the Newry City Southern Relief Road scheme and Michael Cur-

ran, who was instrumental in the original Narrow Water Bridge plan believes it would make sense to combine the projects.

Michael Curran, who was instrumental in the business plan and securing planning permission for Narrow Wa-

ter Bridge, said he believes it “makes a lot of sense to marry the two projects together”.

The former director of economic and cross-border development at Louth County Council said that along with road improve-

ments south of the border, the new combined project would offer significant transport benefits for the region along with the tourism benefits which the original scheme would offer”.

The plans to construct the bridge linking Louth and

Down were put on hold in 2013 after it was learned that there was a significant underestimation in the cost of the project.

Sinn Féin TD for Louth Gerry Adams has written to the Transport Minister, Pascal Donohoe TD, and

Department of Regional Development Minister in the Executive, Michelle McIlveen MLA, seeking further information on a proposal to amalgamate the Narrow Water Bridge Project and the Newry City Southern Relief Road Scheme.

Success for Louth clay shooters

Louth Village sharpshooter Jake Byrne made waves last year as he became one of the youngest competitors ever to represent Ireland at the World Clay Shooting Championships which were held in Florida.

In doing so he established himself as one of the finest marksmen in the country. Now there is a new kid on the block in the shape of Jake’s 14-year-old brother Ryan who completed a fantastic debut season in competitive action by finishing top of the junior league which has been running since February.

According to Jake the finals in Cortlough were a huge success for local shooters with a number of Louth men and women coming

home with medals.

“I came third in my section which earned me a medal and my brother Ryan who is still only 14 did really

well coming out on top of the junior section.

My girlfriend Aoife McComish came fourth overall in the ladies which was fantastic as

this is only her first year competing.

“We also had great results from Tony McComish, Denis Duggan, Colin Dunne, Maurice Kavanagh, Bernard Anderson, Michael Callaghan and Gerard Kirk which resulted in an excellent weekend for Louth shooters.

“All proceeds from last Sunday’s competition went towards the Children’s Hospital in Crumlin which raised €1800 which we were delighted to contribute to.

Next up for us are the Louth qualifiers which will take place over the next six weeks to decide who will be a part of the Louth team which will go forward to the national championships,” explained Jake.

Man has difficulty with drink A man who was described as having a difficulty with drink was fined €75 when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Simon Maguire with an address at 2 Woodland Park was arrested as he was a source of danger to himself when Gardai encountered

him at Clanbrassil St on April 14 this year.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client was of limited means but Judge William Hamill asked how he had enough money to get drunk.

The judge pointed out that

while the defendant obviously had no regard for his own safety he should consider how others might feel.

Mr Lavery added that his client, who had 92 previous convictions, had a bad history and is in dire circumstances.

While discussing his book on the ‘Anton Savage Show’ on Today FM one listener was extremely interested to hear what Alan had to say.

Niall Quinn is the chairman of the newly formed Fleet Street News and Media Group which aims to nurture players and help them avoid potential pitfalls. After listening to Alan speak about his book Quinn got in contact with the Louth Village man and invited him over to London last Friday for the launch of his new group which was taking place in the House of Lords which was being hosted by the Earl of Shrewsbury.

Quinn was hugely impressed with Alan’s book calling it the ‘most important football book in a long time’

Alan was shocked but delighted to receive the invite to the House of Lords and is

delighted with the coverage his debut publication has received so far.

“I’m still trying to figure out how I ended up in the House of Lords with the Earl

of Shrewsbury but it was a great day and I’d like to thank Niall Quinn for inviting me and for his generous words about the book,” noted Alan.

“I had the idea to write this book when I thought about players around my age retiring. On average the football retirement age is around 35, and I asked myself what happens next. Transition from the game to ‘normal life’ is often very difficult and the cause of several problems – divorce, mental health and financial issues among other things. So far the book has been well received and I’m delighted that people seem to be enjoying it,” he added.

‘Retired: What happens to footballers when the game’s up’ is currently available to purchase on Amazon ahead of its general release on 30th May.

Official opening of new St Marys school

The official opening of the new St Mary’s College school took place last Friday morning with a procession down St Mary’s Road led by Archbishop Eamon Martin.

The Marist transferred to their brand new state of the art

school last month with accommodation for up to 900 pupil.

As well as 29 specialist classrooms for subjects including technology, construction studies, art, home economics and design and communication graphics, while there also are guidance and learning support suites.

There is also a library, purpose-built science laboratories, a music/drama room with staging area, over

20 general classrooms, computer suites and a physical education hall with changing and fitness suites.

Facilities also include a general purpose area as well as a canteen, staff offices and other ancillary space.

External works include five ball courts, GAA playing and training pitches, covered bicycle racks, landscaping and 65 car parking spaces.

On Friday morning

at 10:30am Archbishop Eamon Martin led a procession of Marist students, teachers and priests from the main door of the old school, down St Mary’s Road before arriving at the main entrance of the new school.

The route was lined with both pupils and teachers from the school as part of the official opening celebrations.

worth and Krzystof Baran took part in a ceremony where the St Mary’s flag was proudly raised on the flagpole.

A tour of the new building was provided following the procession.

The Sky Sports Living for Sport Experience project, which was run by Karla, placed the Six Keys to Success at its heart.

Each week the group focussed on a different key such as people skills and brought these to life by taking part in a range of sports activities.

The project ran from January to May, ending in a sports day for 125 first-year students, allowing Patrick and his peers to put their new skills to the

test. The day incorporated activities such as novelty races, dodgeball and funfair style games.

Taking part in Sky Sports Living for Sport has enabled Patrick’s confidence to grow to such an extent that he ran for the school’s Student Council and was elected as a Third Year Representative – an achievement nobody would have thought possible a short time ago.

High School Musical Few avail of cross border healthcare directive At St Vincent's Just sixteen people from Co. Louth took advantage of the Cross-Border healthcare initiative in 2015 according to Minister for Health Leo Varadkar.

The cross-border healthcare directive was introduced last year as it aimed to ensure EU citizens may access safe and good quality healthcare services across EU borders. The implementation of the directive means that the HSE will pay for treatments for Louth patients who currently have to endure

lengthy waiting lists.

The scheme requires patients to initially fund their travel expenses, and payment for treatment, but the HSE is committed to paying for the treatment on receipt of the invoice. There are certain rules and regulations, but nothing excessive, and member states have a duty under EU law to facilitate patients who apply.

Last week in the Dáil Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick submitted a question to the Minister of Health Leo Varadkar which

read: To ask the Minister for Health the number of persons in County Louth who availed of the cross-border healthcare directive in 2015; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Leo Varadkar’s reply stated that: ‘The EU Directive 2011/24/ EU on Patients’ Rights in Cross Border Healthcare aims to ensure EU citizens may access safe and good quality healthcare services across EU borders. I am advised by the HSE that sixteen people from Co. Louth

accessed care abroad under the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive in 2015.’

Ireland has been slow to adopt the European Cross Border Healthcare Directive but it is now available for all to use.

It will be a matter for the patient and his/her referring doctor to identify the clinician abroad and satisfy him/herself in relation to the qualifications, quality and safety of the services being availed of in the other jurisdiction.

Attracted attention after robbing arcade Two men who stole money from an amusement arcade came attracted the attention of Gardai by the manner of their driving while making their getaway.

As a result, John Marshall of 37 Maple Close, Avenue Rd, Dundalk, and Michael Ward with an address at Glengat B&B, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk District Court where they pleaded guilty to a number of charges.

The court heard that on July 31 last year, the pair

entered the arcade in Blackrock and while the attendant was outside her office, Mr Marshall jumped in and took a cash box.

When the attendant realised what was happening she attempted to return to the office but was twice shoulder charged by Mr Ward. She suffered bruising as a result.

The two men escaped in a car driven by Mr Ward but as they drove past Blackrock Garda Station they were observed by an officer who followed them.

The car failed to stop at Seafield Road and caused other vehicles to swerve to avoid a collision. They drove onto the main Castlebellingham Road and at Haggardstown forced cars to take evasive action while also driving on the wrong side of the road and breaking the lights at the Xerox junction.

The Garda stopped the pursuit but remained at a distance behind as the defendants drove onto the Avenue Road where they crashed

and had no previous convictions.

Judge William Hamill put the case back to June 15 for a Community Service Report when he would consider 120 hours in lieu of three months.

Ms Sands stated that Mr Ward was a 23-year-old married father of one who had also been evicted from Woodland Park. He had left school at 11 and had difficulty with substance abuse since his mid teens. However, he had turned his life

around since getting married.

The defendant, who had previously been given a suspended sentence offered €500 in compensation and asked the judge to be lenient.

Mr Ward was also found with another man at a disused retail park premises on May 30 last year. Gardai found a discarded crowbar and gloves.

Judge Hamill adjourned the case until June 15 for a report.

For 13 years I was a student at St Marys College. I do not recall one student there who was obese. They ate too many sweets and chips, but they took exercise and so despite

diets, obesity was not a problem.

Students usually walked or cycled to school. Now they come often by car with awful results to themselves and others.

Burglar held until Gardai arrived

A MAN who returned home to find a man leaving his house with property worth over €4,000 tackled the burglar and held him until Gardai arrived.

As a result, John Joyce of 5 Culhane St, Dundalk, appeared at Dundalk Disctrict Court where he pleaded guilty to the offence on March 11 this year.

The court heard that on that date a home owner from Carrickarnon received a call to say there was a strange car outside his house. When he returned he

saw the defendant coming out of the house with property including jewellery, DVDs, CDs and an iPad valued at €4,300.

Along with a neighbour, he tackled the man and restrained him until Gardai arrived. It was discovered that the front door of the house had been forced open and a screwdriver was found inside the house.

It was revealed that Mr Joyce has 130 previous convictions and is currently serving a 12-month prison sentence.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the 34-year-old father of two was abusing drugs at the time.

He is now on a methadone programme in Mountjoy and making use of his time in custody by pursuing a woodburning course.

He said his release date was expected to be December 9 this year and added that there was no prospect of compensation being paid.

Judge William Hamill imposed a six month sentence.
