The delay in implementing plans to improve services at Louth County Hospital has come in for criticism with one local councillor calling for immediate action to provide the promised facilities for local families.

Sinn Féin Councillor Anne Campbell has revealed that the planned reduction in the age limit for treatment at the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at the Louth Hospital is already behind schedule, and has stated that the situation must be addressed in order to ease pressure on the already overstretched A & E in Drogheda.

In November 2017, Health Minister Simon Harris was visiting Louth and told Fine Gael politicians, that the reduction in age at the MIU, from 14 to 5 years, would happen in February this year.

Councillor Campbell, who is a member of the Regional Health Forum, pointed out this week, “that deadline is

now well past. Minister Harris, during a visit to Louth, announced to great fanfare, his confidence that the MIU in Dundalk would see this reduction by February. The latest information I have received is that the age reduction will not now happen until some time in the second quarter of this year. This information was given to Gerry Adams TD following a Parliamentary Question.”

The response, from the RCSI Hospital Group which runs health facilities in Louth, Meath and North Dublin, says: ‘It is envisaged that the Local Injuries Unit at the Louth County Hospital will be in a position to start seeing patients over five years of age with minor injuries in Quarter 2 2018. This change in practice remains dependent on staffing and appropriate staff mix’.

Cllr Campbell said: “I am very concerned at this delay and the fact that the RSCI have not even set a proper date for the age reduction despite the

February deadline having already been missed.”

Cllr Campbell also pointed out that “with over-crowding an almost daily occurrence at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, this age reduction will give parents, like myself with children under 14, the ability to get their minor injuries treated in the first-class MIU in Dundalk. The longer the age reduction is delayed, the more pressure is being heaped on an already overstretched A & E in Drogheda not to mention the stress for parents worried about having to take their child to Drogheda with a minor injury.”

Cllr Campbell has called for the “RSCI to now make the age reduction their top priority in this area and to get the staffing they say they need in place - they have already had plenty of time.

We want to see Minister Harris follow through on his promise albeit late in the day.”

The young players from Dundalk Gaels enjoying their day in Croke Park

Young players star in Croke Park The Dundalk Gaels under 8 team played in Croke Park on Tuesday last against a team from Westmeath.

It was the first time these teams ever played in the famous home of GAA and they did not let the occasion get the better of them.

The stand was full of proud family and friends cheering both teams on, with a sea of blue and white flags waving in the air.

The game itself was a battle of wills between two strong sides.

The Gaels came out on top at half time with a good lead. But the Westmeath team came out fighting hard in the second half and had the game all even going into the last few minutes.

The Gaels management looked worried

but the players themselves dug deep and rallied to score a winning goal.

The players then had

the honour of climbing the famous steps on the Hogan Stand before taking turns to lift the cup.

Fodder crisis hits Louth farmers

The chairman of Louth IFA has warned that the fodder crisis which has been affecting many parts of the country has begun to hit local farmers hard also.

Gerry Melia stated that the fodder levels weren’t too bad locally up to two weeks ago but after a very wet weekend at the end of March levels of feed for cows and cattle have reached dangerously low levels.

Farmers traditionally pur-

chase fodder (dried hay or maize) to feed their livestock during the winter months until spring arrives and the animals can eat grass again. However, due to the wet summer last year many farmers had to eat into their winter supplies early which has left a shortage of fodder all over the country.

Earlier on this year farmers from counties not affected too badly by a shortage of fodder helped out those that were suffering. Last month Gerry Melia organised a lorry load of straw and hay to be deliv-

ered to farmers in Donegal who were suffering a severe shortage of feed for their animals. However, just a month later Louth farmers are now struggling and according to Gerry hay is in the process of being imported from England to help out hard-pressed local farmers.

“Farmers have been pushed beyond their limits in recent weeks with regards to fodder with the wet autumn coupled with the snow and a wet spring forcing farmers to keep their animals in sheds for

much longer periods than is usual,” explained Gerry.

“We have been trying to source silage and maize for a couple of weeks now but it’s proved difficult as any farmer that has any is understandably keeping it for themselves given that there is no guarantee that the weather is going to improve any time soon.

“The government have stepped in and have agreed to cover the cost of importation of fodder from the UK which will be a help but we are currently in talks with them hop-

ing that they will subsidise the cost of buying it as well. If it’s say €250 per tonne of fodder we’re hoping they will contribute €50. The main thing though for us is the hope that the weather picks up. I’m a dairy farmer and the cows have been in sheds since last September which is very unusual. I know people say that farmers give out all the time but this is a genuine problem and farmers all over the county are struggling big time and praying for the weather to pick up,” stated Gerry.

Red Cross host first aid course Blackrock

The members of the Dundalk Red Cross are launching a sixweek Practical First Aid course for members of the public. The course starts on Monday April 16 and costs €65. The programme is delivered by highly trained members of the Red Cross and is the perfect opportunity for people to learn essential skills that could save lives.

The aim of the course is to teach the public basic first aid to allow them to use these skills to

save lives in everyday situations and emergencies. The Red Cross are very excited about this course and hope that the public will find it useful. The course takes place every Monday night from 8pm to 10pm in the Red Cross Hall, on Jocelyn Street.

The Dundalk Red Cross is part of a global humanitarian organisation that allows its members to work both nationally and internationally. The course is run by Tom Horwell. For more information

Tidy Towns updates

Blackrock Tidy Towns would like to thank all who supported our Church Gate Collection last Sunday the proceeds of which will be put towards projects in the village this year.

An Taisce National Spring Clean. As part of the national spring clean 2018 Blackrock Tidy Towns will be doing a beach and village clean-up on Saturday April 21 from 10am to Noon. Assemble at the Lower Car Park (Centra). Gloves, litter pickers etc. will be provided.

Now that winter is over Blackrock Tidy Towns will be resuming their weekly Action Hour - Monday evenings 7pm to 8pm from Monday April 16.

Meet at the Sundial in the centre of the village.

Even if you have only a half hour to spare your assistance would be very much appreciated. The group will be carrying out maintenance, repairs, painting, planting and a variety of other jobs requiring attention in preparation for the National Tidy Towns Competition 2018 and for the general enhancement of the village.

Evergreen local athlete Geraldine Finegan has added yet another gold medal to her collection following victory at the European Masters Indoor Championships in the Pentathlon.

Geraldine who is 52 years old is a prolific medal winner on the Masters circuit and added another gold to her collection with a brilliant victory in the Pentathlon. The North East Runner achieved a lifetime best and new national record in the pole vault with a jump of 2.40 and secured the gold medal in the final event by winning the 800m by a massive twelve seconds from her nearest competitor.

Geraldine, however, refuses to rest on her laurels and is competing for Ireland again this weekend in Helsinki at the International Indoor Tetradecathlon which consists of fourteen events over two days.

While over there I got to chat with pole vaulting legend Wolfgang Ritte who is still break-

ing records at the age of 65. I was lucky enough to be coached by him for a couple of hours over there and even in that short period I learned so much which resulted in me achieving a lifetime vest. That really shows

you how important and valuable good coaching can be.

“Next up for me is a trip to Helsinki for the International Indoor Tetradecathlon which takes place this weekend in Finland. I beat the world record in this event last year in Belgium and my aim is to do so again.

It’s such a tough event as it’s basically like doing a heptathlon back to back over two days.

Every inch of your body aches after a competition like this. I remember I felt like I had gone a couple of rounds with Conor McGregor after last year’s event.

But this is what I love to do. I love new challenges and to try and do things that motivate me and excite me. I love the fear of going into these events against new challenger and it acts as fuel for me. If you don’t challenge yourself every day what is the point of life?,” stated Geraldine.

Geraldine takes part in the Tetradecathlon this Saturday and Sunday in Helsinki.

Classical concert at An Tain

An Tain Arts Centre will host “8strings2abow” on Friday April 20 at 8pm.

Film Festival at An Tain The Japanese Film Festival returns to Dundalk on Saturday April 21.

This year An Táin Arts Centre has two very different animated features from this years packed festival line-up.

The first is Lu Over the Wall at 6pm.

This family friendly feature, full of music and fun, stars Kai, a loner teenager that moves with his father from Tokyo to the declining fishing town of Hinashi.

There, with the help of some new friends and his catchy music, Kai meets a twin

Service of Thanksgiving for local Emergency Services A Special Service of ‘Thanksgiving and Acknowledgement’ for Emergency Services will take place at The Green Church on Tuesday evening, April 17 at 7:30pm.

The service is designed to say a very special thank you to all who

serve the community and will see the choir accompanied by guest organist and the Dundalk Brass Band.

There are few subjects which will gain unanimous agreement more than that of our admiration and gratitude for the many dimensions of First Responders

and Emergency Services.

Border Communities Against Brexit organised a poster unveiling on Monday April 9 at six locations across the border to mark the important anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

The Good Friday Agreement together with EU membership transformed the border communities in Ireland, and brought peace and prosperity across the island of Ireland.

Chamber air views at Border event Dundalk Chamber were invited to speak at the Centre for Cross Border Studies, CCBS at their latest conference on Britain’s exit from th EU. Paddy alone made the presentation which concentrated not on Brexit as such but the challenges and oppor-

tunities presented by 2040.

Paddy emphasised the fact that the Plan had been radically altered. This included the linear city of Drogheda Dundalk Newry which the Chamber had championed. Another was the recognition of the importance of the

Letterkenny/ Derry area.

The plan now recognised that as good neighbours it must take the wishes and needs of the North when planning to 2040.

In the past National Plans had planned up to the border. The consequence was that the

beneficial impact of those Plans was not as strong the nearer you approached the Border.

As a result, border towns like Letterkenny and Dundalk had lost out. It was up to national, regional and local organisations within the North to identify how best they could en-

gage with the National Planning Strategy.

One option was the existing MOU between Louth and Newry Mourne Down local councils in the absence of Stormont.

The meeting agreed that the opportunity presented must be seized.

Armagh Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes

The Armagh Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from May 12 to 17 led by Archbishop Eamon Martin. The Dundalk Lourdes Committee along with 16 other committees across diocese will travel as part of the Pilgrimage.

Over 500 pilgrims are travelling this year.

As always the pilgrimage will include “assisted pilgrims”. These include parents and sick children, adults suffering or recovering from illness, the older and infirm members of our community and those who are suffering from terminal illness.

The assisted pilgrims become the VIPs of Lourdes and are supported on their journey from when they leave home until they return safely to Ireland by a team of doctors, nurses, carers, handmaids and brancardier.

This is an auspicious year for the Dundalk Lourdes Committee as they are celebrating 60 years of pilgrimage to the Holy Shrine in Lourdes, having first travelled in 1958. The final fund raising event of the year takes place in Dundalk Golf Club, Blackrock, on Thursday April 26. This is a Gala Music Night with entertainment provided by Zoe Conway and John McIntyre, Conal Duffy, master uilleann piper along with the Dundalk Musical Society. Tickets priced €15 are available from the Greenmount Restaurant, Clanbrassil Street, St. Patrick’s Parochial House and Dundalk Golf Club. Everybody welcome.

Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has urged people to make sure they are registered to vote ahead of the upcoming referendum on the 8th Amendment.

“Now that the referendum date has been announced for May 25 it is vital that people ensure they are registered to vote. Many people often think they are reg-

istered and then find out they aren’t. Using the website checktheregister.ie is a quick and easy way to find out if you are registered or not.

“If you aren’t registered, all you have to do is fill in an RFA2 form or if you have changed address you need to fill in an RFA3 and send it to the Franchise Section, Louth County

Council.

The closing date for addition to the register is May 8.

“Whether you are pro-choice or pro-life, it won’t matter if you aren’t registered before May 8, so take a few minutes to use checktheregister.ie and make sure you have the opportunity to have your say on May 25.

All-Ireland finals for Dynamites

There is great excitement around the North Louth Basketball Community as Liby Dynamites Basketball Club U16 girls team represent the North East Basketball Region as league winners and go to The All Ireland Finals in Cork City on the weekend of April 14th and 15th.

Dynamites will play the winners from Dublin and Kilkenny in round one of the Finals and will need to perform at their best to progress to the next stages.

Having gone the season unbeaten this very talented group of players Coached by Coach Orla Brennan and assisted by Coach Kathy O’Neill and Roisin McKenna have developed into a very good team, which, was developed through the Dynamites Academy program over the past four years.

Sub Aqua Club Trainees in Mulroy Bay, Donegal.

Nine new members went through the intensive training programme with the club over the winter months. The first open water dive for this year’s trainees was organised for Mulroy Bay in Donegal.

This is a sheltered bay and ideal for the introductory dive.

The large group of 32 set out early for Donegal on Satur-

day morning with a convoy of cars, jeeps, club boats and club equipment all necessary for the trip.

The enthusiasm was infectious with a mixture of excitement, expectations and trepidations. The first dive for any new trainee is always memorable. This year’s dive site was a short distance out from the launch slip north

of Crannoge Point with a depth of 6-8 metres. This was a nice sandy shale bottom with some kelp. Each trainee was buddied with an experienced club diver.

The emphasis was on ensuring that the first dive was enjoyable for the trainee, and safety as always was paramount. A successful club outing and a great start to the diving year.

The Anam Cara team will be commemorating ten years, during which the organisation has supported almost 10,000 bereaved mothers and fathers throughout Ireland.

Dundalk hosts Cystic Fibrosis annual conference Dundalk South councillor Anne Campbell has thanked all those involved in the Cystic Fibrosis Ireland annual conference which took place at the Crowne Plaza hotel at the weekend.

Cllr. Campbell attended the Friday evening official opening of the conference in place of Sinn Fein TD Gerry Adams who was not able to make it. Mr Adams had been invited by CFI in recognition of his successful involvement in the battle by CF patients and their families to make the revolutionary drug Orkambi available in the South.

The theme of the conference was ‘Independ-

ent Living’ and covered a range of topics including education and housing, as well as updates from medical professionals on a variety of areas of interest to those living with CF and their families.

In addition, a major report on living with CF and the challenges faced by those with the condition was launched at the Louth conference, which Dundalk CFI branch chairman, Adie O’Hagan and the local members, helped organise.

CFI CEO Philip Watt attended the weekend conference and said he was delighted to be in Dundalk. On Friday night, he presented a number of annual awards

to those involved in raising awareness and funds for the organisation.

Cllr. Campbell revealed that among those who received awards were Linda and Ronan Whitmarsh, who are originally from Dundalk and now live in Cavan. Their son, Finn, who is aged four, is living with CF. “They were instrumental in the #YesOrkambi campaign and met Gerry Adams and health spokesperson Louise O’Reilly a number of times about the issue. I would urge everyone to give generously to the nationwide ’65 Roses’ fundraiser which takes place on Friday April 13,” added Cllr Councillor Anne Campbell, Adie O’Hagan, Ian Gallagher, Maire Gallagher Rachel Mellon Louth Campbell.

Noel Reidy leads the way at Dundalk Golf Club Noel Reidy with a score of 69 led the 64 qualifiers for the matchplay stages of the Gold Medal.

Reidy, who plays off 13, birdied the par four 14th and also recorded pars at seven other holes, but he only took the leading qualifier spot on countback despite having just one double-bogey, at the seventh, on his card.

The competition was run over Saturday and Sunday with some

players on 76 from Saturday and some players on 77 from Sunday qualifying. Defending champion, Maurice J Murphy, is among the qualifiers.

The Irish Mixed Foursomes team got the inter-club season off to a winning start with a first round victory over Bellewstown. The match ebbed and flowed throughout before Dundalk prevailed by 3.5 to 1.5.

team. Managed by Carl Stewart and Alan McDermott they face Ardee on Saturday week, April 14, at 2.30pm with three of the five matches in Dundalk.

This weekend will be a busy one for Dundalk’s Boys team as the U18s begin the defence of their Fred Daly Leinster title while the U15 also open their Leinster campaign.

St Kevin’s won the Louth Feile Camogie final on Wednesday April 4 after defeating neighbours Mattock Rangers. On a bitterly cold night, both sides should be congratulated on fielding full strength squads.

Dundalk cyclists continue fine form

Another week and another top class performance for Ray Fedigan in the Irish Veterans cycling league. The third round of the league was a 75km road race held in Meath and despite a furious pace coupled with constant attacks, the race came down to a bunch sprint.

As he did two weeks ago, Ray was the quickest man there and took his second win of the campaign, to go with his third place of the week before. In the same race Jimmy Flynn finished in the same bunch further down the field.

In the other race on the same day, Alan Gray had another good outing with sixth place, while his father Martin finished further down the field.

On the open racing season, Navan Road Club ran their rescheduled Meath Grand Prix event. The road race had been one of the many sporting victims of the recent “Beast from the East” weather. In the A4 event Darren Kelly McCann was riding strongly throughout and put in a

Motorists who fail to shop around at the time of their car -insurance renewal could be missing out on an opportunity !to lower their premiums, AA !Ireland has warned.

A recent survey of over 4,000 k motorists undertaken by AA g Ireland found that a major-ity of respondents were able to lower their insurance costs by shopping around. 44.17% of those surveyed by the AA team -‘strongly agreed’ that they were ,able to secure a better price lthan their initial renewal offer by getting quotes from alterna,tive providers, with a further 17.49% partially agreeing with e 7this statement.

“However, it’s also important that you look beyond just the price when you are shopping around and also research the level of cover you are receiving.

When you are shopping around you may find a lower price than your current provider but could also see a drop off in your level of cover, depending on your specific circumstances you’ll have to weigh up these two factors to decide which policy is right for you.”

“Insurance prices are still, on average, significantly higher than they were before the motor insurance crisis truly began in 2015. However, in the last year the increases in people’s renewal quotes have been less severe and a fortunate few are even seeing their premiums drop slightly. As a result of this, people are starting to think that shopping around is no longer essential,” Faughnan added. “That’s simply not the case if you want to get the best deal on your insurance. Getting quotes from a few additional providers will only take a few minutes but could leave your bank balance looking a little bit healthier.”
