THERE was good news for Dundalk on the jobs front last week as cloud based customer engagement specialists SaleSense announced the opening of a new facility at Finnabair Industrial Estate which will create 100 jobs. Recruitment will start immediately and the new positions are expected to be filled by the end of the year. SalesSense was founded in 2006 and is a leading provider in Field Sales Customer Acquisition in both Business and Consumer Markets. The company also offers Europe’s first fully Cloud based Customer Engagement Centre. SalesSense has bases in Dublin and Galway and has over 100 people

The proximity to Dublin and Belfast airports, the infrastructure and, especially DKIT were major factors.” Local Fine Gael TD Peter Ftzpatrick was delighted to announce the creation of the new jobs and praised Dundalk’s IT graduates who he said were ready made for the jobs. “Over 100 jobs will be created by SalesSense which is great news for Dundalk. Graduates of DkIT will be able to apply; it is a town that is ready made for IT and computer based industries”, explained Mr Fitzpatrick who hinted that

there may be more job announcements down the line. “This is the first of many new announcements that I hope to make over the coming 12 months for Louth and in particular Dundalk and Mid Louth”, he added. The company says it offers Europe’s first “fully cloud-based customer engagement centre” and its website says it uses its “groundbreaking cloud technology and our unique philosophy on customer satisfaction to provide end-to-end sales solutions that include sales management and business development”. SALE END 21st MARCH Woman recovering after aggravated burglary By Tamara O’Connell

GARDAI suspect that a gang of criminals might be targeting residents in Carlingford following an aggravated burglary and three car thefts in the area. Three cars were stolen in Cuchulainn Heights in Carlingford on Wednesday, February 4 between 3.30am and 7.45am. “It would have taken about three or four people to drive the cars away,” according to a Garda spokesperson. Meanwhile, a woman is recovering after four men armed with a crowbar and a spray pushed their way into her home and assaulted her. The aggravated burglary took place in the Carlingford area on Thursday, February 5 between 8pm and 8.30pm. The woman was at home when she heard her dog barking and when she

went to investigate, she was met at the back door by four men wearing balaclavas and black leather gloves. The gang, who had Northern accents, pushed the woman back inside. Armed with a crowbar and a spray, the men threatened the woman and shouted at her. She was then sprayed in the face and hit about the head and face before being locked in a bathroom. She stayed there until around midnight, when her husband came home and forced open the door. An amount of cash and keys to a jeep were stolen. The scene was technically examined by Garda forensic experts. Gardai are appealing to anyone with information about the aggravated burglary to contact Carlingford Garda Station on 042-9373102, Dundalk Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Role of grandparents is honoured at CBS By Paul Byrne

Marist Church Lenten Mission Ash Wednesday, Thursday, Friday- February 18, 19, 20 at 7pm with Mass. Talks: ‘Coming Home to God’ by Father Garret Campbell ‘Coming Home to Yourself’ by Father Ben Hughes ‘Coming Home to Others’ by Father Frank Corry.

The CBS primary school invited grandparents down for a special concert last Thursday morning to celebrate the important role they play in their grandchildren’s lives. All classes took part in the concert which featured singing, poetry and prayer. Grandparents were also invited into their grandchil-

dren’s classrooms to meet the teachers and see how the classroom has changed since their own school days. Principal Michael Lambert praised the role that grandchildren play in their grandchildren’s lives while also remembering all those grandparents who couldn’t attend the special concert. “We started invited the grandparents down to the school a few years ago and it’s become an annual thing which everybody enjoys

very much. Some of the grandparents here today are actually past pupils so it’s a lovely thing to have between the different generations”, noted Mr Lambert. “It’s important to recognise the important role that grandparents play in children’s lives. It’s nice to thank them for all the wisdom and joy they give to their grandchildren. “Today is also about remembering all those grandparents who are no longer with us and those

who couldn’t travel to make it with us today”, he added. Grandparent’s Day is part of Catholics Schools Week and has been a popular addition to the CBS primary schools calendar in recent years. In the lead up to the event children are encouraged to make thank you cards to their grandparents as well as rehearsing for the school concert which the grandparents enjoyed thoroughly on the day.

Each year between 250 to 300 people attend a great social occasion so come and enjoy bacon, egg, sausage, pudding, tomatoes and of course pancakes.

The organising committee are Paddy Williams (chairman), Michael Staunton, Oliver Nixon, Frank Toal and Fergus McArdle. For tickets contact and member of the rotary club or you can alternatively pay at the door on the day. The committee would like to remind subscribers and supporters that nobody in the Rotary Club gets paid, gets commission or gets travelling expenses etc. The Rotary Club has no overheads and all the administrative work and organising projects such as the breakfast morning is done voluntarily by the members.

County Museum workshop

The Louth County Museum in Dundalk will hold a card-making workshop for children on St Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14, at 11am. Children will have the opportunity to see images of Valentine’s cards from years gone by and to make their own cards for that special friend or indeed parent and let them know how much they love them, explained Curator Brian Walsh. “St Valentine’s Day is not all about huge cards, bouquets and

boxes of chocolates. The cards of the past may have been smaller but as the children will see from the images they were equally, if not, more beautiful. “The Children’s Card Workshop is always fun with a fantastic array of cards to show proudly at the end of it.” A charge of €1 per child will help cover the cost of stationery and materials. For further information and pre-booking, contact the County Museum, Dundalk at 042 9327056 or email info@dundalkmuseum.ie.

Woman lashed out after losing her handbag A woman who became upset at losing her handbag after a night out, lashed out at a woman waiting outside a takeaway, before assaulting three friends who came to her rescue. The first victim suffered a broken nose after being headbutted while two others received punches to the head, and another received a cut to the head. Michelle Kearney of 39B Fitzherbert Court, Slane Road, Navan, Co Meath, pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault and one of assault causing harm when she appeared at Dundalk District Court. Solicitor for the 38-year-old, Conor MacGuill, argued that there was insufficient evidence to convict his client. However, his argument was rejected by

Judge Flann Brennan who convicted on all three charges. The court heard from one of the injured parties that on August 16, 2011, she had been out with friends in a night club. She was standing outside a takeaway waiting on her friends when the defendant approached her. Ms Kearney said something she didn’t understand and then headbutted her on the nose before being kicked after she fell. Three friends who came to the victim’s aid were also assaulted. An independent witness described the incident as a “brutal, unprovoked attack on the girls who were minding their own business”. His description of the defendant matched the images of Ms Kearney on CCTV, while one of the victims was

Dundalk Men’s Sheds targeted again by thieves By Paul Byrne

U nscrupulous thieves have once again targeted the Men’s Sheds causing thousands of euro worth of damage to their Seatown premises. This is the fourth time in a year the Men’s sheds have been targeted and Thursday night’s break in has caused the worst damage yet. Peter Gray who has been involved with the Men’s Sheds since their inception has hit out at the thieves who continue to target the shed. “It’s very disappointing that thieves would

target us again given that we are working very hard just to keep the place open and we need every single cent that we raise to stay open,” explained Peter. “We had an incident here last year where eight of our hanging baskets were stolen and before that we’ve had damaged to our front door as thieves have tried to get in”, explained Peter. “Unfortunately whoever did this managed to get in to the shed this time around and they have caused thousands of euro worth of damage. The side of the

pool table is smashed in, lockers in the work room have been forced open with a screwdriver or crowbar and they have also slashed our polythene tunnel in the garden which cost us €600 to put up two years ago. “Given that our funding ended in 2013 we really don’t need to be dealing with this sort of vandalism and thievery”, he added. The Men’s Sheds funding ended at the end of 2013 and they rely on fundraisers and selling on goods that they make in the shed to keep the doors open.

able to identify her as she had grown up near her and knew her family. In a statement given to Gardai, Ms Kearney admitted that she had been involved in a row with a girl after asking about her bag that went missing, but did not admit to assaulting anyone. When Ms Kearney’s bag was handed in to Gardai it contained 70 diazpam tablets, but she denied that they were hers. Mr MacGuill stated that two of the witnesses did not identify Ms Kearney as the person who assaulted them, while the independent witness was watching from the other side of the street. He added that what was said in interview can’t amount to admission. Judge Brennan adjourned the case to March 18.

Main pic: Matt Keating, Men’s Sheds Treasurer, assesses the damage to the pool table. Inset shows further damage.

The Sheds are open from 9:30am to 1:30pm every day for members of the public to drop down and purchase the wonderful array of items made in the shed including bird-boxes, wheelbarrows and garden furniture. All funds raised help to ensure the shed’s stay open. Meanwhile the Men’s Sheds “Early Valentines Night” celebrations will take place tomorrow night (Thursday) with music from the Mickey McEneaney as

well as fun and a very special edition of ‘Mr and Mrs’ which will potentially cause a few rows between husbands and wives on the night! Tickets cost €10 but are limited so get one quickly is the advice from Peter and the gang. New members are always welcome down to the Men’s Sheds and will be given a friendly welcome if they decide to pop down to the shed in Seatown. Call 0429327652 for further information.

Good news as DkIT Sports Arena opens its doors to students

in Brief Arcade reopens

The DkIT Sports Arena and inset, Derek Crilly

By Paul Byrne

THERE was good news for students in DkIT as the DkIT Sports Arena opened its doors for the first time on Monday. The building which was formerly the JJB Sports Complex was purchased by the college in December 2013 and can boast a huge range of facilities for students in the college. According to DkIT Sports and Societies Officer Derek Crilly the new sports arena will be a huge benefit for students and will represent one of the best college facilities in the country. “It’s great to finally open the doors of the

new DkIT Sports Arena and this will take a lot of pressure of us with regards to finding space for sports. We opened up the football pitches on Monday to the students and the plan is to open the whole facility up by summer time and it will be open to the public then too”, explained Derek. “It’s a fantastic complex and we have eight five a side football pitches up and running as well as a large training area which is made up of three more pitches. In the summer when it’s fully operational we will have a swimming pool, steam rooms, jacuzzis as well as the gym

which will be a huge asset to both students and the wider Dundalk community”, he added. Speaking when the agreement to buy the JJB complex was signed DKIT President Denis Cummins noted that the purchase represented a wonderful opportunity to develop the colleges sports facilities. “Acquiring the Sports Complex which is adjacent to DkIT is a wonderful opportunity as we have for the last 10 years had the ambition of developing our indoor sports facilities and this has been on our last two campus masterplans. “This centre will provide for all the indoor

Life sentence is handed down for wife’s murder A DUNDALK man who pleaded guilty to murdering his wife over two years ago was given a life sentence on Monday. Michael McDonagh of College Manor, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk admitted murdering his wife, Jacqueline McDonagh, on August 29, 2012, when he appeared at the Central Criminal Court. It had been expected that the 36-year-old defendant would seek a trial before a jury but on Monday morning he changed his instructions. The court was told

that the mother of three had been cruelly taken from her family when she was beaten to death by her husband of 15 years, despite several unsuccessful attempts to call her father. The court heard Jacquelin’s mobile phone was found under her body. Det Insp Patrick Marry told the court that emergency services had been called to the house on the date in question. Ambulance personnel found an unresponsive female with “suspicious injuries”. Defence barrister,

Caroline Biggs, told the court that her client, who was a bare-knuckle boxer, was in a very distressed state and pleaded with the ambulance personnel to help. The family had been at a family party previously and alcohol had been consumed. The defence told the court, the couple had been in good form at the party and there had been no issues. Justice Paul Carney handed down a life sentence to Michael McDonagh which was back-dated to September 1, 2012.

Old Dundalk Society Lecture The Old Dundalk Society as part of its on-going Golden Jubilee Celebrations are delighted to announce the first in its series of Spring Lectures for 2015, entitled, The Exceptional Summer of 1933. This was a crucial year in World history and that summer was exceptionally good. This is the story of a brief holiday romance illuminated by letters and photographs

that allow us, in so far as that is possible, to revisit that time, and see our parents or grandparents and their friends as they enjoyed the sunshine — oblivious of what was to come for the world and for themselves….. The lecture will take place at the County Museum, Jocelyn Street, Dundalk on Tuesday February 17 commencing at 8.00P.M.

This lecture will be delivered by James (Jim).P. Gosling. Jim, a Dundalk native, was born in 1944, grew up between Hill Street and Ladywell Terrace. He attended St Malachy’s and the Christian Brothers schools (Dundalk). Jim, lectured at NUI Galway for many years, although a scientist by profession, since his retirement from teaching he has pursued a variety of literary and historical projects.

An 18-year-old man who pleaded guilty to burglary and theft charges at Dundalk District Court was give nthe opportunity to avoid a prison term as his case was adjourned for a Community Service Report. He fled on foot with some coins and two laptops which were recovered. He also admitted stealing a watch valued at €10 from Heatons on December 21 last year. Defence Barrister, David Costello, stated that his client had been in costody from December 31, which he found difficult. He lives at home with his mother and family, and had been doing a Fetac course and drug awareness course. He added that he had difficulty with cannabis and tablets but was free from everything at the moment.

noted Riona. “We had 27 fatalities on our farms in 2014 and that means there were 27 farm families living with the devastating consequences of the death of a loved one. As well as that there are more that are coming to terms with life after a serious injury”, she added. “I think the figures

show that machinery at roughly 47% is the biggest danger on our farms and it is imperative every farmer is aware of the dangers and how to prevent accidents happening on their farms”, concluded Riona. Niall O Lamhna, Teagasc, Dundalk, led the way around the farm from tractor to machinery, from cattle to sheds,

from electrics to safety equipment, from bales to lighting, covering all angles as he pointed out areas of potential risk, safeguards that can be taken and good practice. Matthew McGreehan, Louth IFA County Chairman, thanked everyone for attending and stressed that awareness and vigilance are key.

Louth farmers positive response to the IFA’s ‘SAVE LIVES, Think Safety, Farm Safely’ campaign was evident last week as the Louth IFA held a Farm Safety Training Walk on the farm of Andrew Purcell and Alf McGlew in Termonfeckin, on Tuesday February 3. Despite the cold weather, there was a great turnout with about 80 farmers attending. According to Louth IFA secretary Riona Meehan the turnout was an indication of the genuine commitment of Louth farmers to improving the safety measures on their farms and protecting themselves and their families. “Safety on our farms is something we are really trying to push at the moment and it was fantastic to see so many farmers come out and take part in our safety training walk last week., Some of the Louth farmers who gathered for the Farm Safety Walk

He asked all farmers to go home and check their farm safety risk assessment noting that one simple change could be vital. February has been designated Farm Safety month of 2015 and it is hoped the IFA’s ‘SAVE LIVES, Think Safety, Farm Safely’ campaign can reduce the number of farming accidents.

A brand new Dundalk FC supporters club has been set up to help build support and raise finances for the club. The Lilywhite Supporters Club held their launch night last Thursday evening in a packed McGuinness’ Bar with Dundalk Fc players Stephen McDonnell, Brian Gartland and Gary Rogers in attendance. According to co-chairman Alan Gray the group consists of supporters of the club who will offer financial support to the club as well as trying to broaden its supporter base for home matches. “We are delighted to be up and running and I would like to thank everybody who turned up last week for our launch night”, noted Alan. “We are here to help Dundalk FC in whatever way we can be it sponsoring matches, organising fundraisers or simply spreading the word and getting more people in through the gate on match days. Anybody can join the supporters club and annual membership costs €30 or €50 for a family of four. “I’ve been supporting Dundalk FC for almost 40 years now and I have to say this team play the most attractive brand of football I’ve seen so far. More people should be up in Oriel watching them each

week and hopefully we can help that happen. I’d also like to make it clear that we are determined to keep every single member in the loop and update them with quarterly newsletters as well as having a quarterly draw for members starting with one at the end of the month when we play St Pat’s in the Presidents Cup”, explained Alan. “What we really want is to raise funds and be able to provide a cushion for the club if they ever fall back on to hard times again similar to what happened a couple of years ago. The club was so close to folding back then and we must ensure we never get so close to the edge again.” warned Alan. The Lilywhite supporters club have already announced details of their first fundraiser with a table quiz organised for the Lilywhite Lounge on Thursday, April 2. There will also be a five a side tournament held this summer in honour of Wayne Mackin who died just before Christmas and who was one of Dundalk’s most loyal supporters. For details on how to sign up to the Lilywhite Supporters Club call into Goldstar Jewellers in the Demesne Shopping Centre or contact a member of the group through their facebook page.

Rugby club continue their winning run Following the euphoria of winning the All-Ireland Junior Cup the previous weekend, Dundalk were back to league action where they recorded a 25-12 win over Cill Dara. The win at the Curragh sees the Mill Road side maintain their place at the top of the table. Chris Scully opened the scoring with a try inside five minutes, while a conversion and penalty from Ultan Murphy stretched the lead to 10-0, and the same player added a try just before the break. Cill Dara hit back but Dundalk sealed the win with a Johnny Williams try, although time ran out before they could go for the bonus point score. Meanwhile, Dundalk seconds recorded a 26-5 win over Cill Dara to remain in contention for top spot in

the league. With Ashbourne having beaten Coolmine of Friday night meant that if Dundalk could secure a victory they could put themselves within two points of the league leaders. Aaron Kernan put the visitors ahead with an early try. Further tries from Rory O’Hagan, Tiernan Gonnelly, Sean Arrowsmith, and Kernan, along with three conversions from James Shields saw Dundalk run out comfortable winners in the end. A beautiful bright and chilly Sunday morning perfect for free flowing rugby set the stage for a fine outing from the Under 11 Sharks in Balbriggan. 24 Sharks made the trip, keen to keep up the momentum of a fine season to date. The Sharks were split into two

evenly matched sides, the Black Sharks and the White Sharks, squaring up against 2 Balbriggan home sides. The Black Sharks wasted no time hitting their stride with a fine break through the middle from Peter Rice gaining territory and off loading to Aaron McEvoy who ran powerfully towards the line spotting Ronan McDonnell in space and finding him with a fine pass, with McDonnell finishing in the corner. This was to set the stage for things to come. Conal O’Callaghan was next to score, then the impressive Luke Andrews, followed by two more from Ronan McDonnell and two from the ever impressive Eoghan Staunton. Match two for the Black Sharks started with a fine try in the corner

from Tadhg Dunne, capitalising on super play from Conal O’Callaghan, who supplied a fine pass after a super break from half way. Balbriggan finished the half strongly but Dundalk responded in the second half. Sam Malone started the scoring before Eoghan Staunton, Ronan McDonnell and Peter Rice also got on the scoresheet. There were fine displays from Johnny Jones, Lorcan Ticehurst, Alex Gregory and Cillian Halpenny. The White Sharks were equally as impressive as the power and drive came from Fionn Duffy, Joseph Pheifer, Laurence Jones, Edward Finnegan, Fiacra O’Gorman and Riain Rafferty. The dynamic passing and running play came from Kieran McArdle, James O’Connor, Aaron Speight, Brian McCahill and Luke Clarke.

ALL ABOUT THE LOVE... Valentine’s Day Saturday 14th February K

nown as the most romantic day of the year, St Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world. While the exact origins of the day itself are vague, it is believed to have been influenced by the Roman Festival of Lupercalia that was celebrated from the 13th to the 15th of February. During this festival, Roman men would become drunk and women would then line up for these men to hit them, as they believed that this would make them fertile. Men would then draw the names of women and would be coupled up with them for the duration of the festival. Emperor Claudius the second executed two men, both named Valentine, on the 14th February of different years. Their martyrdom was honoured by naming the 14th February ‘Valentine’s Day’. St. Valentine’s Day was combined with Lupercalia in later years. The holiday was romanticised in the work of Shakespeare and

Chaucer, and it gained popularity throughout Britain and the rest of Europe. Handmade cards became a standard love token of Valentine’s Day, while nowadays, it is traditional to exchange gifts with loved ones on this day. To this day, St Valentine’s Day sales bring in large amounts of money annually and it is one of the most celebrated holidays of the year. While we have developed our own traditions for the day of St Valentine’s Day, these are not quite as odd as the many unusual beliefs that people used to have about 14th February. In the Middle Ages girls ate bizarre foods on the 14th in the hope that it would make them dream of their future husband. It was believed that the first bird a woman saw on St Valentine’s Day would show what kind of man she would marry. A robin meant she would marry a sailor. If the first bird she saw was a goldfinch, this meant she would marry a rich

man. A sparrow meant her future husband would be poor, while if she saw an owl, it was believed that she would spend life alone. Doctors at this time frequently advised their patients to eat chocolate as a way of recovering from heartbreak. In the 17th Century, even

married couples took a valentine, and it was almost never their significant other. People also believed that the first unmarried person of the opposite gender that they met on St Valentine’s morning was the person they were supposed to spend their life with. Impress (or confuse)

Juveniles found in pub after graduation Mass

A former licencee of a Dundalk pub was fined €250 at Dundalk District Court after being convicted of allowing three juveniles on to his premises after 9pm. However, Anthony Matthews of 11 Lisroland View, Knockbridge, Dundalk, had a charge of allowing juveniles to consume alcohol on McManus’ Bar, Seatown. The defence stated that the staff had taken extra precautions on the night in question as there had been a secondary school graduation Mass in town earlier that evening in anticipation of young people trying to get in. However, when Gardai arrived the three individuals were on the premises. Dundalk District Court heard that on May 24, 2012, that

Gardai carried out an inspection at 10pm and on entering the premises observed four females at a table in the back lounge. It was discovered that three were under the age of 18 while the fourth, who was 18, had purchased four bottles of beer. Solicitor, Paul McArdle, stated that his client was on his guard that night due to the graduation which was taking place and had made efforts to ensure anyone underage didn’t get in. The investigating Garda accepted that the girls had been on the premises for just nine minutes when he arrived, and that the barman had asked for ID when the beer was being purchased. He aslo accepted that the girls were sitting in a corner that was out of sight and that they had the drink no longer than a

minute when Gardai arrived. At that stage Judge Flann Brennan granted an application to have the charge of allowing alcohol to be consumed in the premises by persons underage. He ruled that there was no evidence of the alcohol being consumed. The manageress of the bar at the time, who is the current licencee, stated that they had staff stationed at both doors of the premises from 10pm in anticipation of young people trying to get in. However, the three girls had entered just before that time. Having heard the facts, Judge Brennan ruled that while it may have been an oversight, the charge of allowing persons over 15 and under 18 years in a bar after 9pm had been proven. He imposed a fine of €250.

Roadworks to cost up to €1.4m By Tamara O’Connell

AN estimated €1.4 million is needed to carry out road works in Dundalk and the surrounding environs this year. The proposed 2015 Road Works Programme was made available at a meeting of Municipal District of Dundalk in the Town Hall on Tuesday, January 13. Twenty-six roads and footpaths in Dundalk and the surrounding environs have been chosen for the road works

programme. The Inner Relief Road is set to receive the biggest investment as there are plans to pump an estimated €185,000 into the R132. Live Register provides boost

From page 1 engagement specialists SaleSense, came the news that the jobless figures had dropped by almost 20 per cent in three years. The latest Live Register figures recorded a further drop in the number of people unemployed in the Louth meaning that these figures have dropped for 31 months in a row. The new figures add to the growing sense of optimism and confirms that the local economy is on the up following a bleak few years. Since 2012 the number of people on the Live Register has fallen from 17,809 to 14,371 representing a drop of 19.3 per cent. The news has been welcomed by Fine Gael TD for Louth Peter Fitzpatrick. “Live Register figures show that unemployment has dropped for 31 months in a row and that in Louth, there has been a fall of 19.3 per cent. This is very much to be welcomed”, noted Deputy Fitzpatrick. “Another drop in the Live Register in January emphasises that the economy is in recovery and that more people are entering the jobs market. “This progress has been mirrored throughout the country. The national unemployment rate has fallen from 15.2 per cent in 2012 to 10.5 per cent. There is however more work to be done and I expect to see a further drop in these figures in the coming months”, added Deputy Fitzpatrick. “Unemployment is falling steadily across the country, but very significantly we are now seeing a drop in rural areas as CSO figures show that the live register dropped in all eight regions of the country over the course of 2014. This year there will be an increased focus on job creation outside of the main urban centres as the Minister for Jobs, Richard Bruton is preparing to launch a pilot programme of the Regional Enterprise Strategy. This strategy will specifically address growing economies in rural areas. “I want to ensure that we are able to compete with Dublin and Cork in attracting foreign direct investment to Louth. According to the IDA, 37 per cent of investments in 2014 were made outside the main centres and the Government will work to continue this trend. “More people are at work and they can expect to see a little more money in their bank account from this month onwards thanks to changes made to the tax and USC system in Budget 2015.

Tim Murphy, manager of Riva Restaurant has hit out at Leo Varadkar’s proposal to display calorie counts on menu’s claiming that it will be just another expense for restaurants around the country. Minister for Health, Varadkar proposed the law that will require all menus, including boards, leaflets, digital menus or other forms, to display the amount of calories alongside the price in the same font size and colour claiming that this simple idea will help people make a more informed choice when eating out. He hopes that this will be brought into law as early as next year. The Restaurant Association of Ireland has hit out at the proposals claiming that the legislation would be unworkable

and could potentially cost restaurant owners up to €5000 per year. They urged the Minister to ‘reconsider this Bill in the interest of the restaurant industry and tourism’. “The Nanny State proposals will be an unnecessary burden on the restaurant owners, as the measures will be virtually impossible to monitor. I urge the government to reconsider this Bill in the interest of the restaurant industry and tourism,” read the RAI’s statement. “How does the government propose that this will be monitored? Will inspectors be paid to eat out in all of Ireland’s 22,000 food outlets and check if each menu has calorie counts on them?” Riva Restaurant’s general manager Tim Murphy echoed

those sentiments noting that he was not excited by the prospect of the law coming in next year. “As far as I can see this is another ongoing expense and we would fully support the Restaurant Association’s stance on this. Our menu changes quite regularly and it represents time and money for us having to constantly figure out and write down how many calories each meal consists of. “This will cost restaurants money and are we expected to pass these costs on to our customers who are already price conscious in these tough times. Hopefully the Minister will listen to the restaurants feedback on this issue and think about the affect it will have on our industry before bringing this law through,” warned Tim.

Spirit Store lands another top act By Cailam Duffy The Spirit store has done it again. The Georges Quay hotspot in Dundalk have continued to maintain their success of luring international talent into their small concert venue. In the space of a month; the venue has landed themselves with two sold out shows; one of which is being held this Friday February 13 featuring the Irish band, The Coronas and later this month on

Tuesday 24, the new and upcoming star Taylor Hudson will take to the stage. The bandmates of The Coronas have stated their excitement of retuning to Dundalk saying, ‘we can’t wait to get back to these awesome venues’. In previous months, such stars like Ellie Goulding and Hozier took the stage to a sold out audience at the Spirit Store and proved a success as part of a special Guinness Amplify gig.

Both superstars played an intimate show to 200 people who were lucky enough to get hold of a ticket. A similar sold out crowd is expecting to turn out this Friday. It is no surprise that this pub has built up its reputation as one of Ireland most star-studded concert halls with its tickets ranging from a reasonable price. Everything about the upcoming Coronas concert is remaining top secret, especially their set list.

Lithuanian Fair comes to town The Dundalk Lithuanian community is organising the second Kaziukas Fair Dundalk on Sunday March 1 in the Crowne Plaza Hotel from 11am to 6pm. Kaziukas Fair (Lithuanian– Kaziuko Mugė) – is an annual Lithuanian folk crafts fair dating back to the beginning of the 17th

century, held at main Market places in the suburbs of Vilnius, capital of Lithuania. As the fair is traditionally held on the Sunday nearest to St. Casimir’s Day, March 4 (the day St. Casimir died), it is popularly referred to as Kaziukio mugė, literally – Little Casimir’s Fair. The main idea of the

event is the change of seasons – the time to banish out the winter and welcome the first signs of spring. The celebration today is more like a festival of folk art, crafts, music and dance, and attracts tens of thousands of people, as well as many craftsmen from all over the country. Traditional palms (called ‘verbos’, hence ‘Verbų Sekmadienis’) made of colourful dried flowers and herbs, are taken to church on Palm Sunday, and are the fair’s trademark. Dundalk lithuanian community presents ‘Kaziuko mugė’ – St. Casimir’s Fair in

Crowne plaza Dundalk 1st of March. The doors would be opened at 11am till 6pm This event is designed to introduce Lithuanian culture and heritage to the Irish public. You could try Lithuanian national food, handmade cakes, cheese, meat etc. The arts and crafts at the fair include handmade goods from local craftsmen, such as apparel, knitted clothes, footwear, toys, utensils, metal crafts, souvenirs, and paintings. The Lithuanian ambassador and Dundalk Lithuanian community chairman will be in attendance.

Confirmation on drinking water is welcome news Louth TD Gerry Adams has welcomed confirmation from Louth County Council that the drinking water supply in Dundalk and on the Fane River is safe. “Following the scandalous Sunday Independent story which claimed that drinking water for Dundalk had been poisoned I wrote to the various agencies, including Louth County Council and Uisce Éireann, to ask if they would carry out an analysis of the water system. “Irish Water confirmed last week that there was no contamination of the water supply and Louth County Council contacted me on Wednesday to also confirm that”, added Mr Adams. The statement read: ‘Regular testing is carried out on drinking water in Dundalk, and the water fully complies in all respects. Following concerns raised by

recent articles in the Sunday Independent, Louth County Council arranged for additional specialist sampling and testing of the drinking water supply in Dundalk. The additional sampling was carried out on the 29th of January 2015. The results of these samples for PAH fully comply with the Drinking Water Regulations. A sample was also taken on the River Fane and these tests were clear and fully compliant.’ The Sinn Fein TD added that given the level of fear and apprehension that the original story had given rise to among people living in the Dundalk, a later statement sought to reassure customers that ‘there is no evidence to suggest that the drinking water supply has been or is contaminated as a result of the illegal activity as reported by the Sunday Independent.‘ Deputy Adams stated that it

was also revealed that Irish Water is in the process of installing an ‘online Hydrocarbon monitor on the raw water abstraction point on the River Fane. This will automatically shut down the treatment plant if hydrocarbons above a specified limit are detected. This will further ensure the safety of drinking water supplied to our customers in Dundalk.’ “Another media report quoted an Irish Water spokesperson stating that the agency had been in touch with the Environmental Protection Agency and that testing had shown that there was no risk to public water supplies. “The spokesperson said that 75 compliance tests were conducted last year – three times more than usual – and none showed any evidence of pollution”, he concluded.

Revenue seizes cigarettes As a result of a joint, intelligence-led investigation, officers from Revenue’s Customs Service, backed up by An Garda Síochána, and Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC), carried out searches of a number of premises, under warrant, along the border in both jurisdictions on Tuesday February 3. Three premises in the Louth area and two premises in Dublin South were searched by officers from Revenue’s Customs Service. Assisted by tobacco and cash

detection dogs Harvey and Meg, officers seized 334,000 ‘Minsk’ and ‘NZ’ brand cigarettes with a retail value of €167,000. A Ford Transit van was also seized. Nine searches were carried out by HMRC (assisted by the PSNI) in counties Down, Tyrone and Armagh which resulted in the seizure of a tobacco processing plant, two million cigarettes and 12 tonnes of tobacco and approximately £50,000 cash sterling. Five people were arrested in the North and were questioned in relation to the seizures.

These seizures are part of Revenue & HMRC’s on-going investigations into an organised crime gang involved in cross border cigarette smuggling and the evasion of excise duties. Investigations are continuing in both jurisdictions and internationally. If businesses or members of the public have any information relating to the sale or smuggling of illegal cigarettes or tobacco they should telephone Revenue in confidence on freephone 1800 295 295.

THE NEW RENAULT KADJAR

Following on from the compact Captur, Renault is introducing a larger Qashqai competing crossover entitled the Kadjar. The Renault Kadjar may go on sale later this yeaR after its debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. Not surprisingly, it is based on the same platform as the Nissan

some 40 litres up on the Qashqai. The rear seats fold on a 60/40 basis via handles located in the boot. The Kadjar will feature the latest in tech with the availability of fullLED twin headlights, a seven-inch touch screen interface with a myriad of apps to help you interact with the car and the outside world.

Qashqai as a result of the Renault- Nissan alliance; it even has a similar 4.45 metre long x 1.84 metre footprint. It will be available with the choice of either two or four wheel drive; we assume it will have the same engine lineup as the Qashqai, with Renault not making any official comments.

So we should expect a 1.2-litre petrol and two diesel variants, 1.5 and 1.6-litres. The four wheel drive model with feature a three mode transmission with the ability to select (Auto, LOCK and 2WD) to aid traction. There is a 190 mm of ground clearance with an approach angle of 18 degrees / 25 degree

departure. The underside is protected by front and rear skid plates, although whether many will venture off road has yet to be seen. The Renault Kadjar promises to be family friendly with soft yet hard wearing surfaces and materials – and has a two boot configuration layout – offing a completely flat

boot surface at the height of the boot aperture or ‘low’ position to provide a maximum carrying capacity of 472 litres,

Safety equipment will include emergency brake assist, lane departure warning, roadsign recognition with speed limit alerts and a reversing camera.
