Human error was not to blame for the tragic R116 helicopter crash off the North Mayo coast in March 2017. The crash led to the deaths of Dundalk native, Captain Mark Duffy, Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, winch operator Paul Ormsby and winchman Ciaran Smith. The fourperson crew were en route from Dublin to Blacksod in Co. Mayo to refuel when the incident occurred. The verdict of why the crash happened was delivered in a 350-page report which was published by the Air Accident Investigation Unit. The report said the probable cause of the crash was due to the helicopter’s crew being unaware that there was a 282ft obstacle on their flight path as they flew along a pre-programmed route on the night of the crash. According to the report there were “serious and important weaknesses” with the flight operator’s safety management system. A total of Continued on Page 2

FASN welcomes Minister’s funding pledge By Tamara O’Connell

FAMILY Addiction Support Network (FASN) Project Coordinator Jackie McKenna has welcomed a commitment by Minister for Justice Helen McEntree that core funding will be provided for the charity. Speaking on The Michael Reade Show on LMFM on Monday morning last, the

Minister revealed core funding will also be provided for the Red Door Project in Drogheda. “I was absolutely delighted to hear it. I’ll be talking to the Minister and will certainly raise it with her,” said Jackie. A fundraiser was launched in September for FASN in a bid to prevent its closure. Founded in 2001 and based in Dundalk, FASN provides

much-needed services to families across the North East affected by addiction. The group offers free and confidential support to family members impacted by the addiction of a loved one. In September, FASN launched an urgent appeal for donations to help keep its doors open. In 2020 they helped over 250 families in communities across Louth,

Meath, Cavan and Monaghan “We develop services in response to families’ needs. We launched the fundraiser because we don’t have the luxury of time,” said Jackie. “We did the FASN 5K with the Louth garda division and held a magnificent truck show with over 200 lorries in Kingscourt. I have to thank Dwayne and Catriona Lynch who were the organisers of

the truck show and had the vision to put the whole event together,” she added. Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so via the FASN Gofundme page or you can make a bank transfer through online banking. Bank details are as follows: IBAN: IE46AIBK 93203521829125. Farmers feel they are scapegoats in the government’s climate change plan

The Chairman of the Louth Irish Farmers Association has said there is a feeling of anger amongst local farmers that they are being picked on with regards to the government’s Climate Action Plan. Last Thursday the government announced that the agriculture sector would have to reduce emissions by 22% to 30% by 2030. There were also actions suggested to reduce methane levels and to increase the amount of land used for organic farming. According to John Carroll, chairman of the Louth IFA most farmers locally don’t understand the talk around target emissions and the main feeling amongst them is one of anger as they feel that they are being scapegoated in the Climate Action Plan. “All this talk about target emissions is confusing to the majority of farmers I have spoken to,” stated John. “They feel they are being unfairly targeted while other sectors are seemingly not being targeted at all even though we are apparently all in this together. With the methane issue there is 100 times more methane coming out of oil wells than is being emitted in the agricultural sector yet for some reason the focus is solely on us to reduce the levels of these emissions. I can tell you now that there will not be any cattle being culled to reduce herd numbers. Our numbers have been static for years and there are other ways

John Carroll IFA.

of reducing methane emissions. I was listening to a professor talking on the radio the other day and she was explaining how you can put an additive in the slurry to reduce methane. Herd numbers in Ireland have been steady for years and if you are looking to cull cattle you should be looking elsewhere like Brazil who have grown their herd sizes exponentially over the last number of years. “I’m a tillage farmer in Philipstown and my emissions and carbon footprint is very low. There are thousands of farmers like me whose emissions are very low, yet we are being asked to completely change the

way we farm while other sectors get to keep doing what they are doing regardless of the effect their industry is having on the atmosphere. We had a couple of hundred private jets fly into Scotland last week to talk about Climate Change and of course they targeted the lowest hanging fruit which is the agriculture sector. We have supermarkets all over the country importing the likes of onions, cabbages and various fruit and veg rather than source them locally and not a word about that. What does the carbon footprint of these big supermarkets look like?”, asked John. “As usual we are the easy targets and people in the farming community are sick and tired of being made the scapegoats. Climate change is an issue which is caused by many sectors but reading the recent commentary you would think that we are solely to blame. We contribute a hell of a lot to our national economy, yet we are being targeted unfairly by our government. And that is why we plan on protesting on the streets of Dublin on November 21st. Farmers and their families will be mobilising on the streets of Dublin to protest over what we feel is unfair targeting of our sector and we want the government to engage with us and listen to our concerns, so we feel a protest is the best way to get them to the table,” stated John.

Saint Brigid’s Day should be marked It is looking likely that St Brigid’s day will become Ireland’s 10th Bank Holiday which will be good news for workers who will get an extra day off on the Monday closest to 1st February each year. With this in mind, Sinn Féin Councillor Edel Corrigan is asking Louth County Council to carry out a programme of works to improve the area surrounding the historical site of the Saint’s birthplace at Fochard Bride (Faughart). Cllr Corrigan said

women of her times, she is remembered for her compassion and spirituality as well as being a symbol of feminine power and strength. “We are very proud to have such strong connections to St Brigid in the North Louth area and we could do more to highlight and protect this in the surrounding area. “We need improved access to the site as well Cllr Edel Corrigan. as facilities and direc“Saint Brigid was one tional signage. I would of the most remark- also ask the Council to able and extraordinary promote the local con-

nection to St Brigid and would encourage local groups, especially those with an interest in history, to get behind any campaign to promote the connection.” Ireland currently has nine bank holidays while the European average is twelve. Cllr Corrigan said “While St Patrick is celebrated throughout the world, St Brigid has never received the full recognition that she deserves so I would welcome having a national day in her name as our other patron saint.”

Naughton Scholarship award for Mark

For the second successive year a Dundalk student has been awarded a scholarship worth €20,000 at the annual Naughton Foundation awards. Dr Martin Naughton, a former De La Salle Student from Dundalk, and his wife Carmel recently announced the winners of the 2021 Naughton Foundation Scholarship Awards which have been supporting academic and innovative excellence in Irish students since 2008. Former Colaiste Rís student Mark Brady was named as one of the thirty-six national winners and follows in the footsteps of former St Mary’s College pupil Robert Mee Lucey who was chosen last year. More than 200 schools have also benefited from this prize to date with some schools receiving it on more than one occasion. Mark’s former school Colaiste Rís, received a prize

of €1,000 towards their school’s science facilities, for their support of these students. The Dromiskin student got an incredible eight H1’s in his Leaving Cert which equates to 625 points. Mark said he was shocked and delighted when informed that he had been awarded one of the prestigious scholarships. “I remember applying for the scholarship award ages ago and then kind of forgetting all about it. It was a huge shock to be notified last week that I had been awarded one of the 36 scholarships and I am delighted and grateful to Dr Martin Naughton and his wife Carmel for their generosity. “I started my Engineering with Management course in Trinity a couple of months ago and I am really enjoying it so far. It is tough but very interesting and it’s going well. As far as life after university goes, I hope to

work in the nuclear industry, building and designing reactors. Hopefully the work takes me abroad to different places as I want to travel before returning to Dublin,” stated Mark. The Naughton Foundation was established by Martin and Carmel Naughton in 1994. It is a private family foundation, and its goal is to support worthwhile causes in the arts and education. In 2008 the duo decided to create the scholarship programme to increase their support for Leaving Certificate students who would like to study engineering, mathematics, science and technology at third level in Ireland. Originally the scholarship programme only applied to students from counties Louth, Meath and Monaghan however it has now expanded nationwide and students from all counties in the Republic of Mark Brady Ireland are eligible to apply.

Ken’s fond memories of the Ramparts River These days unfortunately, any mention of the rampart’s river brings to mind weeds and rubbish with the sight of broken trollies or bin bags an all too familiar sight. It hasn’t always been that way however and recently Dundalk man Ken Ramsey told us about the great times he and his pals enjoyed on the river with their home-made canoe which gave them many days of enjoyment back in the 1960’s. According to Ken, who grew up on Jocelyn St., they eventually graduated to a canoe having originally bombed down the river in a half-barrel when they were kids. “I can remember myself and my friends having great fun floating down the river inside a half barrel when we were younger. When we got a bit older we made ourselves an 8ft timber frame canoe. Johnny Mathis and Granville McClenaghan were the brains behind putting

Above: Paul Kavanagh’s picture of Ken in his canoe in the late 1960’s right: A picture of the Ramparts as it looks today. Pic Kenneth Ramsay that canoe together and it was a great wee boat. We would go down the whole length of the ramparts river. We’d go from the Legion of Mary right on up to the Imperial Hotel. We couldn’t get under the bridge at Williamson’s Place as it was too low but we could go right down the other way under Distillery Lane Bridge, under Corrs Bridge right down to the Redemptorists.

Myself and my pal Brian Carragher were probably a bit mad in the head and had no real thoughts of safety as we went down the Navvy Bank at a decent clip towards the Spirit Store where we would store the canoe. As I said Granville and Johnny were the men who had the knowledge to make the canoe and back then it was such a rarity for anybody around the

town to have one. They did a great job building it as it lasted us quite a few years before we stopped using it. It’s pretty sad to see the river in the state it is today and hopefully at some stage it can be restored to its former glory. For me the river brings back many fond memories of lazy summer days cruising down the Ramparts on our canoe,” stated Ken.

Miriam draws on local buildings for inspiration

A LOCAL woman is exhibiting some popular art work of local historical buildings and monuments in a well known Dundalk barber shop. The exhibition is taking place in W. Lawless Barber Shop on Park Street. The artist is Miriam Fox, who is known for being a yoga instructor. Having worked as a yoga instructor for over 20 years, Miriam turned to art after being inspired while on holidays. “I’ve been drawing since 2019. I got the idea while on holiday from walking around the markets,” she said. “I started doing silhouettes of pets on stone just for fun then I was asked to do portraits of pets. “I started doing historical buildings after I was asked to do the Four Courts in Dublin. It was a big one to start with as I’ve no training.” Miriam added: “Afterwards, I decided to draw Dundalk so I did 12 drawings including the Maid of Eireann statue which is one of my most popular

Miriam Fox pictured with Ramona Grabowska. Pic: David Thomas Martin drawings. “Louth County Library saw some of my drawings on Facebook and asked if I wanted to do an exhibition in 2020. “It was a big success and then I decided to do prints of my drawings. It’s been a weird journey. Wherever I am, I draw what’s around me.” Miriam continued: “My MonArt exhibition is on now inside Lawless Shop as I did a drawing of the

shop front last year which is on display in the front window. “The theme is ‘A Trip Down Memory Lane’. The exhibition was the idea of Lawless barber Ramona C Grabowska to use the front part of the barber shop as an exhibition space. “I now have 90 drawings of Co Louth and further afield and I have recently launched my MonArt Miniatures giclee prints; these are very popular

gifts for home or away. She concluded: “I draw railway and maritime and was inspired to do so by Margaret Mallon and Liam Gaynor who is a local history and steam enthusiast and former printer. There is a choice of four print sizes mounted or framed to choose from. For further information visit Facebook MonArt or call Miriam on 0879765153.

DkIT President, Michael Mulvey, PhD, warmly con-

gratulated all graduates and highlighted that he expected ‘great things’ from the class of 2021 given that they had demonstrated an unprecedented level of resilience and adaptability in completing their studies amid the most challenging of circumstances. Mr Mulvey highlighted that participation in college life will have helped the graduates to ‘build’ and ‘shape’ their character. “Your tenacity, resilience, determination and resourcefulness were truly astounding” During his closing address the President thanked all staff

CAO website now includes apprenticeship programmes

The CAO website now includes apprentice opportunities for school leavers for the first time ever. The new CAO website went live on Friday and now includes options across higher education, further education and training, and apprenticeships for school leavers and other applicants. The addition of apprenticeships as an option for

school leavers in the CAO system has been welcomed by Minister of State Peter Burke, who says that it reflects recent changes in the educational sector. “The changes to the CAO website from my colleague Minister Simon Harris will allow students to see the full range of third-level options in one place for the first time. “Students across West-

meath will now have access to over 400 Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses and 62 apprenticeship programmes, as well as university options, on the enhanced CAO portal. This is vital as it shows that there are worthwhile alternatives to third level which are accessible in the same way as universities. Different students have different needs, and for too long I believe

we have put too much emphasis on third level, to the detriment of other similarly important routes. Up to recently, sometimes the narrative was that it was third level or nothing, which is not the case. “Access to education for all is a key priority for Fine Gael in Government and this is just one more step in breaking down the barriers to third level. As part of

last month’s Budget 2022, Minister Harris announced the abolition of the €200 course levy, which will apply to all PLC courses in Longford Westmeath ETB from next September. “The inclusion of apprenticeships on the CAO website speaks to the societal shift that has occurred over the past few years. Students, teachers and parents recognise there is so much more

than university to consider when thinking about life post Leaving Cert. “This is a significant step in making our third level sector a more inclusive environment which caters to the needs and skills of all school-leavers. It is a change which reflects education, of some form or another, is for all – but the ‘one size fits all’ model is now a thing of the past.”

Tickets are €25 and limited tickets are available online from www.orielcentre.ie. As per public health measures, a covid cert (vaccine or recovery) and photo ID are essential for entry.
