Dundalk dancers are on top of the world after members of Funky Feet were crowned world champions in the United States.

The group competed at the 20th annual World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in LA, where they represented Ireland, and did themselves and the town very proud as they were announced as Gold Medal Winners in five categories.

Jack McEneaney, Lauren McKeown, Johnny Duffy, Kelly Murnaghan, Loren Murnaghan, Naoise McGuinness, Emily Mulpeter, proved to be the stars of what once again proved to be an event of very high standards.

The €5m Cash and Carry warehouse is due to open this October and work has already started at the site of the former Littelfuse building on the Ecco Road.

People on social media have been expressing dismay at the fact that trees which are situated on the site (behind Ice House Hill Park) had been bulldozed towards the end of last week.

Many expressed their disappointment that beautiful cedars and tall pines had all disappeared along with the wildlife in the area.

However, yesterday morning BWG foods released a statement allaying fears that they were destroying the landscape of the area stating that they are planting six trees for every tree which has

been knocked down.

“In re-developing this site, all processes and regulations have been strictly adhered to in line with the planning permission granted by Louth County Council. This includes requirements in relation to permitted tree removal and re-planting; for every one tree removed, six new trees will be planted in its place.

The development of this new Value Centre site is very positive for the region and it reinforces our confidence in the local economy and our commitment to local businesspeople.” read the statement.

Green Party member and local councillor Mark Deary said he understood people’s concerns about trees and wildlife being dis-

turbed and the sense of loss felt when situations like this arise.

“We do have to protect our urban green spaces as best we can and I fully understand people’s worries and concerns when they see bulldozers going in and tearing down trees.

There is a sense of loss when they see things like this happening and we have to be careful to protect these areas as best we can.

“I’ve only just heard about the trees being knocked on the Ecco Road and I’m currently waiting on a response from the planning office to find out exactly what permissions have been granted to BWG. “What I would say is that when a development is approved I would urge that any company coming in

Lauren McKeown (20) said that the ultimate goal was reaching the final but when their names where announced at the Worldstars Party on the Wednesday Night, it actually brought tears to her eyes knowing that all the hard work had paid off.

The group arrived home on Saturday morning filled with pride with their medals proudly around their neck to family, friends and supporters at Dublin Airport to welcome them home.

With just two rounds to go in the Summer Cycling lead Alan Bingham has a lead at the top of the table. The long standing stalwart of Dundalk cycling, leads newcomer William Loughlin by a slender nine points. The two have been victorious over the last two rounds with Bingham taking round 15 in a mass sprint, while Loughlin was the winner of round 16, where his group managed to evade the clutches of the scratch group, which contained Bingham.

Loughlin is only 16 years and rides with the newly formed Armagh South Down team. Behind

these two sit Rosena Lynch and Andrew McAfee of Dunleer’s White River Wheelers, some 12 points behind Bingham.

The battle for the top spot will be played out on the Sportsman Circuit in round 17 plus the final night on the ‘Dunleer & back’ course. The leading riders are very dependent on their fellow group members. In Loughlin’s case he needs those around him to ride hard enough to hold off Bingham’s group, while Bingham in turn is reliant on his fellow group six riders to capture those in front.

Loughlin’s group while holding off group 6 from behind.

Lynch, despite being in the second race, is in the same situation. Basically each rider is looking to score points and hope that their rivals don’t get a good result.

On the open racing front Bingham’s good form continued when he placed fourth in Saturday evening’s Kilmessan Grand Prix. The short race was furiously fast, yet despite this Bingham managed to form part of the four man winning group which escaped with 15km to go. The race was won by Daire Feely of Roscommon.

Woman had argument News in Brief on street with her aunt Ladywell

A woman who got into an argument with her aunt on the street was given the chance to avoid jail after her case at Dundalk District Court was adjourned for a Community Service Report.

The court heard that on June 27 this year, Gardai observed Jennifer Maguire of 94 Doolargy Ave, Dundalk, approach a group

of females on Doolargy Ave. The defendant, who was intoxicated, was very aggressive and beckoned one woman to get her daughter out to fight.

Judge William Hamill noted that Ms Maguire, who had eight previous convictions, had previously been given the benefit of the Probation Act, fined and give a suspended sentence.

Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly, noted that her 28-year-old client had a difficulty with alcohol and had been sober for a number of months but relapsed prior to this incident when she had an argument with her aunt.

Judge Hamill put the case back for a Community Service Report and stated that he would consider 100 hours in lieu of two months.

Dowdallshill is the venue for a very worthwhile fundraiser this coming Friday to help raise much needed funds for the ‘Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust’ which helps families to repatriate their loved ones who have died abroad. This event is being held in memory of Alan McArdle who died in August of last year and is being hosted by Alan’s family and friends.

The trust fund’s objectives are to provide financial as-

sistance with repatriation to families of loved ones who have either died in tragic or sudden circumstances outside Ireland. It also helps with any required documentation involved in the repatriation process.

Colin and Eithne Bell set up the trust fund after their son Kevin was knocked down by a car while working in New York. He subsequently died from his injuries at the age of 26 in June 2013. The Bell family were astounded

at the amount of financial support they received to help with the repatriation of their son, which was given through personal and online donations from family and friends.

The family of Kevin Bell quickly realised that other families would experience the same emotional stress as well as the financial distress at facing the prospect of repatriating their loved one. The language barrier in some circumstances was also a factor which would cause

distress and this is the area where the state has helped through its Foreign Affairs Department.

The Bell family decided immediately to set up a fund to help other families who found themselves in similar circumstances, which give birth to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust Fund. The trust fund has helped facilitate almost 100 repatriations to date.

This particular fundraiser is on Friday August 12 in Dow-

dallshill clubrooms on the old Newry Road at 8:30pm in memory of Alan McArdle, hosted by family and friends.

Music will be provided by ‘The Prime Suspects’. Light refreshments will be served.

The organisers have appealed to everyone in their generosity to support this worthwhile cause in anticipation of your presence, thanking you for your support. If you cannot manage to make it, tickets are on sale priced €10, from any family member.

FOUR young people from Louth participated in the Foróige Leadership for Life Conference in NUI Maynooth last week.

The international youth leadership conference was attended by over 250 young people from across Ireland, the USA, Saudi Arabia and India and they were joined by Roisin McArdle from Dunleer, along with Emmet Kirk, Deane Burton and Tiarnan McKeown from Kilkerley As part of the week-long conference, inspirational lectures were given by RTE Broadcaster Joe Duffy, Fitness Guru Pat Divilly and Senator Joan Freeman who founded Pieta House.

New car sales in Louth Dundalk FC to face Legia Warsaw have increased by 19%

New car sales in Louth have increased by 19 per cent in the month of July compared to last year’s figures.

The latest figures reveal that a total of 2897 cars were registered compared to 2438 12 months ago.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) issued the official 162 car sales figures for the month of July. New car registrations are up 19 per cent (131,264) ahead on the same period last year (109,931).

The total to the end of July this year has already surpassed the total number of new cars registered

for the whole of 2015 (124,947).

The month of July saw 162 registrations increase by 8% (29,931) compared to July 2015 (27,594).

A man who ‘took a few drinks’ at a Christmas party was banned from the road for three years after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court.

Paul O’Neill of 43 Cambrook Estate, was stopped by Gardai at The Square, Dundalk, on Decem-

ber 19 last year.

Solicitor, Ciaran Hughes, stated that his client had been to a Christmas party where he had taken a few drinks. He apologised to Gardai.

The Commercial Vehicles sector continues to perform well with Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) up 15% (4,341) on the same month last year (3,760) and currently, year to date, are up 23% (22,746) overall.

While Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations, are also up 37% for the month of July (397) 2016 when compared to July last year (290), with registrations up 41% year to date.

Banned after drinking at Christmas party

Dundalk FC are just one step away from the promised land and following last Friday’s draw in Nyon, Switzerland they now know only Legia Warsaw stand between them and the Champion’s League group stages.

Dundalk have deservedly been getting plaudits from all angles in the wake of their memorable victory over BBATe Borisov but for the Dundalk manager that is all in the past and Legia Warsaw are his sole focus now.

Speaking after the game in Tallaght, Kenny challenged his players to keep striving for more and not to rest on their laurels.

“We have to start thinking about getting into the Champions League now because BATE are in it for the last five years and they beat Roma

and they drew with Bayern.

They’re a good team and we played them off the park overall. I feel that we shouldn’t limit ourselves and thinking that’s it. We have to keep on going and finish the job” stated the Dundalk boss.

If Dundalk do fail to get past the Polish champions they have the consolation of knowing that they are guaranteed at least six more European games before Christmas as they will be parachuted into the group stages of the Europa League. It was revealed over the weekend in the Sunday Independent that each Dundalk player will receive a €40000 bonus for getting this far with further bonuses promised should they progress.

State failing people with disabilities—Adams In the wake of the cancellation of respite services for children in St Mary’s Drumcar, Louth Sinn Féin TD Gerry Adams has said that the attitude of the Government towards people with disabilities and those who care for them is at the heart of this respite crisis.

Mr Adams stated that there are over 5,000 people in County Louth who have intellectual disabilities and it is disgraceful that they are being denied their rights.

“In 2007 Ireland signed the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities but nine years later it is yet to be ratified. I am

calling on the Government once again to immediately take steps to ensure compliance with the convention, ratify it, and afford those with disabilities the respect they and their families deserve.

“The Government’s treatment of this group of vulnerable citizens is appalling. They have seen their incomes eroded with cuts in carer’s benefit, domiciliary care allowance and the respite care grant. Their capacity for independence has been reduced through cuts to mobility allowance, mortised transport grant and home help and they

have also faced swinging cuts to their services.

“I learned that the children in Louth who were due to commence respite at the St John of God Services centre at St Mary’s Drumcar on Monday will not now be receiving their pre booked respite.

“This is totally unacceptable and I can only imagine the frustration and annoyance which the families of the 9 children affected will be experiencing at the moment as their plans for next week fall asunder.

“It is incumbent on St John of God and the HSE to provide accurate informa-

A man who used a stolen credit card to buy drink and food had the case against him adjourned to allow him pay compensation.

Florin Muntean of 49 Park St, admitted the offence and told Dundalk District Court that he found the card on the

street.

The court heard that on July 2 this year a woman had a handbag containing a phone and credit cards stolen. A card was used in two transactions at a newsagent to the value of €18.40 and an off licence to buy items worth €10.

Gardai identified the suspect on CCTV and while he admitted using the cards he denied any knowledge of the theft. The property was not recovered and no compensation was paid.

Solicitor, Ciara Hughes, stated that her client is a Ro-

manian national who supports a wife and five children. While her client didn’t have any money for compensation, Ms Hughes added that he would have on the next date.

Judge William Hamill adjourned the case to August 18.

Derek claims win with strong finish

A brilliant back nine was the key to12 handicapper Derek Murdock winning Sunday’s Single Stableford competition on countback from John McCann (17).

A three for two points at the par three ninth meant that Murdock walked to the 10th tee having picked up just 15pts from the opening nine holes.

While he had scored on every hole, he had only managed one

three pointer when he parred the par four third and that two point par at the ninth had been preceded by three one point holes.

The next four holes were a different story altogether as he found the momentum that ultimately led to a winning score of 40 points.

McCann also posted a score of 40pts but was blown away on countback by Murdock’s back nine and

had to settle for second overall.

The category prizes were won by Niall McCaul (8), David Cairns (18) and Larry Hanratty (25) while Tom Dunne (22) took the Juvenile Prize with 36pts.

With the level of changes applied to the course over the last 18 months Dundalk Golf Club invited the Leinster Golf Course Rating team to review the

A man who was stopped

by Gardai after driving the wrong way around a roundabout was banned from driving for three years after a breath test showed he was over the limit.

Francis Cherry of 32 Oriel Park, Bessbrook, was stopped by Gardai at the N1, Dromad, on July 22 and taken to Dundalk Garda Station where he provided a breath test.

After pleading guilty to the drink driving charge, Mr Cherry was fined €200 and also disqualified for three years.

Schoolboys impress at Dublin Cup event Dundalk Schoolboys League u12 representative team made their debut at competitive level last weekend playing in the 14th Dublin Cup tournament at the AUL Complex in Clonshaugh.

The Dundalk League played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with the Wexford League in the opening game on Friday afternoon.

Wexford led 1-0 at half time but Dundalk equalised early after the break when Oisin Coleman’s cross was headed home by Evan McEnteggart and the same Dundalk player put Dundalk 2-1 ahead within minutes when he latched on to a Kieran McArdle pass to slot home.

Dundalk pushed for a third goal to try and seal the outcome but were caught on the counter attack with a Wexford equaliser in the closing stages.

Dundalk pushed on in the second half and scored three times without reply from Oisin Coleman, Cian McKenna and Evan McEnteggart to secure the double victories on Saturday.

Dundalk’s next game on Sunday morning was against the tournament favourites and

eventual winners the DDSL. It was always going to be a huge task to try and compete with the DDSL who raced in to a 2-0 lead after 15 minute but a Jack Watters goal kept Dundalk in the game at 2-1 at half time.

The Dublin outfit stretched clear in the second half despite a brave performance from the Dundalk players to win 6-1.

Louth women get ready to bare all to fight cancer

Participants from Louth are being encouraged to take part in a special fundraising event in aid of the Northeast Oncology Unit based in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Sunday September 11 will see local women strip off at a secret location in Co. Meath to take part in the annual ‘Dip in the Nip’’.

Since it was founded in 2009

by Máire Garvey Dip in the Nip whose tagline is ‘Dare to Bare to Fight Cancer’ has raised thousands of euro for cancer charities all over Ireland. For the Chief Dipper she found the feedback from women everywhere was it provided a sense of joy and liberation, particularly for those with body image issues.

Organized by NECRET who use the funds towards activities

that will improve the treatment and outcomes of people with cancer from across the North East including counties Cavan, Louth, Meath, Monaghan and North Dublin they are delighted to see not just local women partaking but coming from as far as Kerry and Derry and even England.

Incredibly and very well received last year at the event former English cricketer and TV Celebrity Freddie Flintoff served the ladies fish and chips when they emerged from waves. It all went down a treat.

The event which is very well run and spearheaded by Karen Healy is an early start with the Dippers arriving at the Westcourt Hotel for their “Dutch Courage Champagne Reception”.

had a double mastectomy, echoed the sentiments of many when she said, that after her first Dip, running naked into the sea had given her back her body, her self-confidence and her sexuality. Running naked into the sea seems to re-connect people with their bodies. It’s as though they fall in love with them, and re-discover just how beautiful those bodies are, regardless of size, shape or lumpy bits! Green Flag Award for Blackrock

Blackrock Community Park will be proudly flying the Green Flag Award, for the best parks and green spaces in the country after being recently awarded the honour. Blackrock Community Park was recently judged by the national panel of Judges and achieved the award.

The Blackrock Park Committee and the volunteers, drawn from local residents in the Blackrock area, are absolutely thrilled with the recognition of all their work in the park which is such an asset to the community. Along with providing a children’s playground, a multi-use games pitch (MUGGA) and exercise equipment the Park is especially notable for the many garden areas which have been developed along biodiversity lines with the emphasis on supporting and sustaining wild-life, pollinating insects and native plants, flowers and trees.

The three local schools have, through their Eco Tribes, created a woodland garden, a herb garden, a bee and butterfly friendly garden and a medieval garden within the Park. Over recent years a woodland slope and a cottage flower garden have been planted up by grandparents with their grandchildren giving the park an inter-generational dimension that ensures the passing on of the knowledge and skills from generation to generation. The outdoor classroom (Seomra Glas) located in the biodiversity garden area is a favourite place for local schoolchildren and those from nearby pre-schools to

Blackrock Community Park was nominated by Louth County Council and the official Flag raising will be this Thursday morning at 10.30 led by the council chairman. this is the quality marks for parks and green spaces. This year, for the first time ever, County Louth has achieved the Green Flag Award standard.

The Green Flag Awards schemes are judged by green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria; these include horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability, health and safety presentation of place, conservation and heritage, and community involvement.

Man was abusive to door staff

A man who was trying to retrieve his coat from a night club became abusive to door staff and Gardai after he was not allowed return to the premises.

Dean Carolan of 1 Barton Park, Dundalk, was twice asked to leave the Park St area on December 27 last year but refused to do so. He was drunk and abusive to Gardai, while he had been aggressive towards door staff of a premises where he was refused entry.

Solicitor, Niall Breen, stated that

the 26-year-old father of one had been in a bar earlier in the night after leaving had returned to try to get his coat and ended up having an argument with one of the security staff.

He added that the defendant, who had eight previous convictions, had too much drink taken and apologised to Gardai. Mr Breen pointed out that his client hasn’t been drinking since.

Judge William Hamill imposed a fine of €300 on one public order charge and took two others into account.

A man who was would not cooperate with Gardai after being arrested on a night out was told to seek professional help to determine if he had a drink problem.

Judge William Hamill issued the warning to Conor Stokes of 38 Slieve Foy Park, Muirhevnamor, after he imposed a fine of €300 in

relation to a public order charge.

“He may not think he has a drink problem but the next time around he may not get a fine so it might be worthwhile to seek professional advice”, stated the judge.

The court heard that on July4 this year Gardai were investigating another matter when they

came across Mr Stokes. He was intoxicated and refused to give his details. He was then taken to the station where he again refused to give his name.

Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs, explains the reason for this fall: Since 2008 private vehicles have been taxed based on their tail-pipe emissions and not their engine size, which had previously been the case. This change has encouraged manufacturers to improve their cars so as to ensure lower tail-pipe emissions and while this has definite environmental benefits it has a knock on effect on the amount of revenue which can be raised through motor tax.

While these changes are great news for the planet, they also represent bad news for Revenue as modern cars are so clean that when taxed on the basis of their tail-pipe emissions they the revenue received is significantly less when compared to older cars.

The reduction in tail-pipe emissions represents significant progress within the car manufacturing industry. However, it also further highlights a degree of unfairness within the motor tax system which directly affects drivers of older cars.

The tax system at the moment is stacked very badly against older cars. For example, it is possible to buy a brand new luxury, executive car for over €50000 and pay approximately €270 per annum in road tax. However, someone who owns a 10-year old very modest, petrol engine car could find themselves paying €1000 in road tax.

While this inequality is expected to disappear over-time, as more and more people move towards owning cars which were produced after 2008, the impact of how motor tax is calculated is likely to have a long-term effect on revenue raised.

When the new system was introduced in 2008 it froze those tax bands into position, which the AA cautioned against. The difficulty now is that technology has surpassed these standards to the point that over 90% of cars taxed are

Kicked wing mirror off Garda patrol van

A man who had too much drink taken admitted that he should have known better than to kick the wing mirror off a Garda patrol van.

Thomas McArdle of 53 Woodview Park was observed by Gardai on December 27 last committing the offence which resulted in the mirror being knocked to the ground. However, the mirror reat-

tached at no cost.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that the 38-year-old should have known better and had drink taken on the night. He added that the unemployed father of one spends money on drink very infrequently.

Judge William Hamill imposed a €150 fine on the criminal damage charge.
