The state of the local ambulance service was highlighted once again this week with the news that a man was left lying injured in a cold yard at Greenore Port for almost two hours while waiting for an emergency vehicle to arrive.

The ambulance was eventually despatched from Blanchardstown over 100km away due to a lack of cover in the North-East area.

Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach hit out at what he called ‘the appalling state of the ambulance service in the North East’ despite him raising the issue with the Minister in the Dáil and receiving assurances promising additional staff.

“This is not a criticism of

the dedicated staff in the ambulance service in the North East who are working in extremely difficult conditions and prevented from carrying out their duties properly because of lack of personnel and vehicular resources.

“I have been advised that following an accident at Greenore Port, a man was left lying on the cold yard in severe pain for nearly two hours while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. The ambulance which eventually came had been dispatched from Blanchardstown in West Dublin.

St Louis Secondary School scoop top prize at trade fair

St Louis Secondary School, Dundalk was the winner of a coveted overall prize at the Dundalk Cross-Border Student Enterprise Trade Fair at Marshes Shopping Centre.

Five schools in the region showcased their mini-company ideas at

the prestigious annual event.

The fair, begun by Dundalk Grammar School Transition Year students in the mid-90s, sees local Grammar School students invite other schools in the north east and Northern Ireland to take part.

Almost 100 students from five schools across the region competed, showcasing 26 enterprises.

Participating schools were Banbridge Academy, De La Salle College, Dundalk Grammar, St Louis Secondary School and St Vincent’s Secondary School.

The Green Tea project from St Louis scooped the overall prize, whist St Louis also claimed category wins for Best Marketing and Best Salesperson.

project-managed this year’s fair, whilst the school’s catering group, Café Deja Brew, provided refreshments.

The event has grown thanks to a desire to pro-

mote cross-border relations through enterprise projects developed by students.

This year’s fair received strong support from Dundalk Chamber

of Commerce, which was involved in judging categories including best overall company, most innovative product, best marketing, best sales person, best stall

presentation and best visiting company.

Judges on the day included Ciara Byrne of Recruitment Plus, Pat McCormick of DkIT, John Owens and Justin King of Optimum Results, business consultant Orla McDonnell of Trahere Coaching and Breean Weldrick of Osborne Recruitment.

“Marshes was once again delighted to host this wonderful event,” said Aoife Kerley of Marshes Shopping Centre.

“We have a long association with the Dundalk Cross-Border Student Enterprise Trade Fair,

going back to 2006.

We are overjoyed that the Cross-Border Student Enterprise Trade Fair once again proved a great success.”

Last month the Fianna Fail TD highlighted the issue of staff shortages in the local ambulance service when revealing that within the nine stations around the North East a total of just twelve staff were rostered rather than the twenty-two who were supposed to be working on that particular evening.

Many of the stations had

just one member of staff on duty which is a major issue as there needs to be at least two people to take out an ambulance when on a call.

According to Breathnach ongoing staff shortages are due to a combination of sick leave, annual leave and the simple fact that there are not enough staff employed.

Six new staff members had been promised by HSE management to ease the pressure on the local service but as of last month these positions still had not been filled.

St. Patrick’s Parish Soup Kitchen was opened twenty years ago by Fr. Gerry Tremer, the then Administrator of St. Patrick’s Parish.

A homeless man had been found dead on the street in Dundalk and this shocked the whole community. St. Patrick’s Parish Soup Kitchen was opened as a direct response to this tragedy; a means of support to those in need and for Dundalk’s homeless. Today you will find a dedicated team of volunteers providing a warm meal, a kind word and a feeling of welcome from the front door, 7 days a week.

St. Patrick’s Parish Soup Kitchen is opened Monday to Saturday 7pm-8pm and Sunday 4pm-5pm. People come for different reasons, some for a hot meal, some for shelter and some for conversation, this might be their only company all day or perhaps all week. People can also let one of the team know if they need fresh clothes or bedding and a voucher is quietly organised for them to use at The Dundalk Simon Shop. St. Patrick’s Parish Soup Kitchen goes way beyond just a meal, it is a helping hand, a listening ear and a social hub.

Rose Bailey, a stalwart team member for over 15 years, says of St. Patrick’s Parish Soup Kitchen “we all say here, ‘there for the grace of God go I’ and it is so true. Year on year, our number of users has grown and the demand remains high. When it began almost 20 years ago, we gave out 20 food parcels a week, today sees a minimum of 150 parcels each week.

The support of Dundalk Credit Union and its Community Support Fund means that we have a working budget for the year ahead, something that allows us to plan with some certainty. They also have supported us at key times during the year, for example Christmas’s St Patrick’s Cathedral Marbhna Requiem which gave us funds to make Christmas special for a lot of people.”

With the loss of Authentic Foods to Dundalk, St Patrick’s Parish Soup Kitchen are ac-

tively looking for a business to supply or indeed sponsor frozen meals, a staple of the weekly food parcel. Rose Bailey says “we rely heavily on the goodwill of Dundalk and its people. The team welcomes food donations; items in constant demand include pasta, pasta sauce, tea, sugar and rice pudding.”

Katie Bailey, St John of God’s Dundalk Hub, brings Finola, Conor, Jimmy and Michael (pictured above) every Friday to help out. These volunteers are much treasured and much needed. Anyone who feels they could spare a few hours every week is welcome and can contact Rose directly at the number below. It is essential for safety and security that every volunteer is Garda vetted.

Coláiste Rís to Babs set to take on the world’s best at Blind/VI Tennis celebrate 150 years in town Dundalk Leader 10th April 2019

Colaiste Rís, formerly the Christian Brother’s School, opened its doors to students for the first time on the 10th of May 1869. The school have recently announced a programme of events to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of CBS education in the town.

The founder of the school was Brother Yorke, an Englishman born in Manchester into a protestant family. When he died, in June 1907, the town of Dundalk closed down on the day of his passing and the street where the school stands was renamed to honour him and his great service to the education of young people in the area.

The school has undergone many changes throughout the years including allowing girls to enrol for the first time

in 1987 as well as seeing the brothers leave after 121 years of service in 1990. The school was then handed over to a new Board of Management and the name of the school changed from the CBS to Coláiste Rís in honour of Edmund Rice who was the founder of the Christian Brothers.

The school will celebrate the 150th anniversary with a special mass which will take place on May 10th at 1pm in St Patrick’s Cathedral.

The celebrant will be Archbishop Eamonn Martin. The next day Dundalk Gaels will host a special gaelic football match where past pupils including members of the winning Leinster team of 1985 as well as former county players will don their boots one more time.

There are also special

events planned for later on in the year including a book launch in the autumn featuring pupils past and present and their stories. There will also be a series of lectures from well known speakers on motivation, positivity and lifestyle.

A special 150th anniversary concert is pencilled in for the 14th of November in the C.B.S Primary School Hall where a selection of past and present pupils take to the stage for an evening of entertainment. The celebration will finish on the November 23 in the Carrickdale Hotel with a gala ball which will include dinner and live music.

This offers a great opportunity to meet with old friends (and foes) and share in what is sure to be a night of reminiscing.

There will be local interest at this year’s Blind/Visually Impaired Tennis World Championships for the very first time following Babs Weiberg’s selection on the Irish team.

Babs who moved to Dundalk from Germany almost twenty years ago has type 1 diabetes and has approximately 4% vision. Remarkably she only took up the sport of blind tennis last May thanks to a recommendation from her friend May McBride.

Blind /VI Tennis is one of the fastest growing sports and has ambitions to become a future Paralympic sport. It is adapted from the full court version of tennis to a smaller court with lower nets.

An audible ball is used so players can hear it bounce. Players compete in different categories with B1 having the highest degree of sight loss. Depending on the player’s category they

are allowed one to three bounces of the ball.

Blind/VI tennis has been played in Ireland since 2016. It started in Dundalk in 2018.

Weekly sessions take place in Dundalk Sports Centre every Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening partly funded by Visionsport Ireland, Louth Sports Partnership and Enjoy Tennis-Tennis Ireland.

Tennis sessions are run by coaches Gary Rodriguez and Tom Murphy and are assisted by Ross Burlingham and Gerry Clarke. Initially players work with the coaches learning this new sport, gradually progressing to playing games of competitive tennis.

Babs earned her place in the Irish team following some excep-

tional performances in the National Championships in Dublin and she will compete in the B2 category in Alicante in June this year. According to Babs it will be a dream come through to represent her adopted country on the world stage.

“I am so happy to have been chosen to represent Ireland at these world champion-

ships. I have been in Ireland almost twenty years now and I have a great love for this country. I have to thank my coaches Tom and Gary who have given all the players in Dundalk so much help over the last couple of years. We have a great group of players here in Dundalk including May, Carmel, Martin, Cáitlin, Gerry and Marc and there is also great dedication from everybody with three training sessions every week taking place in the hall in Muirhevnamor Sports Centre. I think the sport is brilliant and a great way of meeting new people and of course it is such great exercise as well. I will train hard for the next couple of months and I look forward to playing against some of the best in the world in Alicante in June,” stated Babs.

Ad Hoc Golf Society

The Ad Hoc Golf Society returned from their Ryder Cup style tournament in Spain where The Exiles once again claimed the honours by defeating The Lions.

After the doubles on day one, The Exiles had built up a 3-1 lead and although The Lions improved on day two to finish at 4-4, it wasn’t enough to stop reigning champions from retaining the title.

On the first day of the Mardon Shield scores were low but three brilliant 34 pointers left Kevin Gordon, Donard Duffy and Michael Begley in control. Day two saw Derek Teather came storming through the leader

board with a fine 38 points, pipping Stephen Murphy with 37.

Overall winner was Kevin Gordon with a 36 to follow his 34 to finish on a total of 70 points, closely followed

by Michael Begley on 68.

Local Elections Regulations, 1995 Louth County Council Notice of Election The Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government has made an order approving Friday 24th May, 2019 as the Polling Day for the Local Elections.

A multi-cultural tournament which was held in Dundalk on Sunday has been hailed a great success. The tournament involved Dundalk FC, Muirhevnamor FC, the House in Cox’s and the Dundalk Islamic Centre and took place on the allweather-pitches in Muirhevnamor.

The tournament was labelled as a celebration of Dundalk’s multi-cultural society and aimed to break down barriers in terms of racism.

Former Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Meenan who helped organise the event was in attendance representing the Muirhevnamor Peace Project.

According to Kevin the afternoon was a great success and he is hopeful that it can become an annual event.

“We were delighted

with the turnout on the day. We had over a hundred kids attend the tournament and the whole afternoon went very well. The kids really enjoyed the games and some of the boys that turned up actually joined up with Muirhevna Mór football club on the day.

We had kids from all backgrounds, races and religions and we mixed them all together to form teams for the tournament.

“Between the games we had presentations from various people discussing racism and we also had Vinny Perth, Brian Gartland and Sean Murray from Dundalk FC down with us and I have to say they were brilliant with their time.

They spoke to the kids and signed autographs and we thank them for supporting the tournament. Liam Burns who is a community officer with Dundalk FC was

also down and we thank him for all his help and support in getting the tournament up and running.

“Finally, we really have to acknowledge the funding which was given to us by the Peace IV programme. This very important programme is a cross-border initiative, financed through the European Union and managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and without their help it

would be very difficult to organise events like the one we had yesterday in Muirhevnamor,” stated Kevin.

“This is the first multicultural tournament that we have organised in the town and we plan on working with the various groups involved to put together more events throughout the year. I see no reason why this can’t be an annual tournament and hopefully it can grow next year,” he added.

Blackrock Tidy Towns Spring Clean The annual Blackrock Tidy Towns Spring Clean takes place this Saturday morning (April 13) Start time is 10am in the lower car park (below Centra) and should finish approx 11.30. Bring along wellies as a lot of the

clean-up will be on the foreshore.

Tidy Towns will supply gloves (for those who do not have their own). They are a one size fits all so participants might want to bring their own and for their chil-

dren. Tidy Towns will also supply litter pickers and bags. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or teacher.

Over the years thousands of happy memories have been made in and around St Joseph’s Redemptorist Church and St Gerard’s Hall, whether it be via Weddings, Christenings or the many events organised via the various Church Ministries be it Choir, Youth Groups, Senior Citizens etc.

While plans are in progress for a very special Family Open Day to take place in the New Hall on Sunday afternoon, May 19th – the organising committee have decide to feature a ‘Down memory Lane’ exhibition and are calling on as many people as possible who may have a special photo or memorabilia - with a story behind it – to donate the item for the day.

Organising Committee Chair, Catherine Shaw explained: ‘The Family Open Day will feature the work of the current ministries and will incorporate all age groups from children to senior citizens. But these are not new ministries. St Joseph’s has always played a huge role in the community here and the Redemptor-

ist has been the backdrop for many occasions.

Photo Exhibition

Evelyn flies the flag for swim club Evelyn Donnelly flew the flag for Dundalk Swim Club at the Irish Open Championship at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. Evelyn was hoping to build on her strong showing at the McCullagh International Open in Bangor earlier in the year. Her fellow competitors read as a Who’s Who of Irish Swimming including the likes of Shane Ryan World Short Course Bronze medalist, Niamh Coyne World Youth Olympic Games Silver medalist and Darragh Greene who was awarded the Swimmer of the Meet. Greene’s 200m Breastroke was the clos-

est time to a world record at the event.

Evelyn competed in the 50m Free on Day 1 of the Open putting in a strong performance, but it was in her favoured 50m Breaststroke that she really made an impression at this high calibre event.

Evelyn posted a 36.71 in the Preliminaries knocking 1.45 seconds off her Personal Best to secure a place in the National Final where she finished ninth overall in this high quality field.

While Evelyn was preparing for the Irish Open many of her fellow swimmers from Dundalk

Swim Club were taking home a heavy haul of medals from the Coolmine Swim Club Gala in Dublin.

Aoibheann Conway opened the Dundalk account, setting the scene for the day, with a silver in the Under 12s 100m Backstroke. This was quickly followed by Conor Goss who landed a Silver in the Boys Under 10s 100m Backstroke. Next up, Emily Coyle won Bronze in the U9s 50 Butterfly. Matthew Messin also took home Bronze in the 50 Butterfly (U12s).

Later, Aoibheann Conway continued her superb form se-

curing a second silver in the U12 100m Freestyle and a Bronze in the U12 50 Freestyle before landing Gold in the 100IM to rounded off a successful outing.

The Dundalk Branch of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation hosted a function for Primary teachers from the area who retired during 2018 in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Friday March 29.

In addition to 11 of the 15 retirees present on the night were the INTO General Secretary John Boyle and District 5 CEC representative Catherine Flanagan, Dundalk INTO Chairperson Helen Luccheroni and Branch Secretary Aoibheann Lynch, who were welcomed all to a pre-function reception before local teacher and musician Ciara McGinnty on the bagpipes led the guests of honour.

Helen Luccheroni and Aoibheann Lynch thanked all who attended on the night and wished the retirees a long and healthy retirement, a sentiments agreed by

He urged all serving teachers to encourage greater INTO participation among all their staff members and colleagues as this would make a strong Union as a continuing force in Irish Education.

Caolan continues good run of form

Caolan Rafferty continued his good run of form by winning the West of Ireland Championship on Sunday in Rosses Point and finishing second earlier in the week at the R&A Scholars Foundation tournament in St Andrew’s.

The 26-year-old Dundalk Golf Club player held his nerve on the final day to see off the challenge of England’s Arron Edwards Hill and Portmarnock’s Conor Purcell and win by four shots.

Having won the South of Ireland Championship at Lahinch last summer, Rafferty now holds two of the six Irish Amateur majors and remains on track to qualify for the American Ama-

teur Championship and make the Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team.

“It’s a great feeling,” admitted Rafferty moments after sinking his Championship winning putt on the final green at Co Sligo Golf Club and acknowledging the cheers of the large crowd in attendance.

Meanwhile at Dundalk Golf Club, the Fred Perry team are through to the first round proper of this new All-Ireland Fourball competition for players over 55 after a 3.5 to 1.5 win over Co Louth.

Dundalk won the three home matches and halved one of the matches in Baltray.

There were wins for

Ollie English & Martin Crosby, David Murden & Frank Byrne and Trevor Giff & Mickey Gill while Mickey Coburn and Charlie Monaghan got a half and Gerry Murray Murray & Vincent Jackson lost away.

The team will now play Greenore in the next round.

In the Junior Foursomes, Dundalk lost by seven holes away to Greenore. The Dundalk parings were Josh Mackin & Joseph Laverty and Tom Dunne & James Reilly.

Niall McCaul led home a field of 220 in qualifying for this year’s Gold Medal competition, the traditional opener to the internal

season at Dundalk Golf Club.

Playing on Sunday, in conditions that were made extremely testing by the strong Easterly wind and the season debut of the blue tees, the eight handicapper shot an excellent four under par score of 68 to take the leading qualifier prize on countback thanks for a back nine of 33.

The top eight qualifiers will be seeded for the matchplay draw.

Sunday’s qualifying score was 76/39 while on Saturday some golfers on 77 got through after a four level countback (40/26.6/13.6/7.1).

The best juvenile score was a 75 posted by Iarlaith Carroll (17).

Busy week for Ardee Concert Band It’s a busy week in the band rooms of Ardee Concert Band as both the Ardee Concert senior band and the Ardee Intermetzo ensemble prepare to take part in their respective sections of the National Irish Association of Brass and Concert Band’s Championships on this coming Saturday April 13 in Artane School of Music, home to the famous Artane Band.

Amongst the busy twice-weekly

band rehearsals for this years national competitions, there are four Ardee Senior Band youth members performing at this year’s National Feis Ceoil in the RDS, Dublin on Wednesday April 10.

All four members, Emma Gorman, Ryan Carroll, Roisin Brennan and Óisin Mulryne, are under tuition from Robert Finegan, Ardee senior band member.

Realt na Mara are tackling the growing problem of obesity by promoting fitness and well-being in their school. All pupils and teachers took part in an ‘Active Day’ on Friday which acted as the official launch for their participation in the Active Schools Flag Process.

The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often. Realt na Mara hope to receive their flag within 12 months and on Friday they began their jour-

During the day pupils engaged with a range of

activities in a quest to help children become more active. The school timetabled a range of activities on the day such as zumba, yoga, soccer, hurling, tennis, circuit training, walking/jog-

ging a kilometre.

Specialist coaches for hurling and rugby came in to teach the children the basics of the game and there were also classes given by professional zumba and yoga

teachers. According to Realt na Mara principal, Phil McCaul, the day proved to be a great success.

“Today is our launch event and we’re very excited to be engaged in

the Active School Flag pathway. We are trying to get the kids fit and healthy and we plan on delivering an improved PE schedule as well as encouraging pupils to stay active. The teach-

ers have led by example and we had twelve of the staff playing tennis after school yesterday evening.

“This launch event is aimed at getting the whole idea of activeness and fitness into the children’s consciousness and have a bit of fun with it as well.

The children have also brought in a donation of €2 which will be used to buy some new sports equipment for the school. It’s an exciting time for Realt na Mara with our new extension due to be opening shortly and we plan on making activeness and healthiness a big part of our school as we help in the battle against obesity,” stated Mr McCaul.

Welcome for funding to boost local tourism Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Declan Breathnach has welcomed this week’s announcement by Fáilte Ireland that funding of €15.5million will be available through the local authorities to boost the

attractiveness and tourism appeal of up to 62 towns across the country.

“This announcement is very welcome, and Louth County Council will be able to apply for funding of up to

€500,000 to develop up to two towns in the County. I have had numerous representations made to my office for funding for upkeep of towns to make them more desirable attractions.

“We have some valuable amenities in Louth and some very pretty towns that could benefit from this funding to really put them on the map. On the technology side of things, funding

could be used to develop an app to highlight the history and amenities in a particular area.

“Fáilte Ireland’s regional teams will work with each Local Authority to identify

towns in every county which have the potential to grow their tourism economy, and I know that Louth County Council will be availing of this valuable funding and expertise.

DkIT students win All-Ireland titles DkIT Apprenticeship students Declan Moore and Mark Wasson have been announced as All-Ireland winners at Ireland Skills Live 2019, which took part in the RDS, Dublin. Both Declan and Mark were awarded silver medals in the Automobile Technology and Joinery categories respectively.

Under the guidance of lecturers from both the Department of Engineering, Trades and Civil Engineering, as well as the Department of Hospitality Studies at DkIT, Declan and Mark joined fellow students Denis Gifford, Gavin Foran and Dearbhla Moriarty to represent the institute at the three day event, completing a series of competitive modules that put their skills to the test.

Speaking about the competition, Automobile Technol-

ogy winner Declan Moore commented: “Each task involved fault finding, examining the task, including measurements, repair and writing reports, all within a time limit.

It was a once in a lifetime chance to take part and to take first place was like nothing else I could have imagined. I’m thankful to have been given the opportunity to be there!”

DkIT lecturers also took part in the event as examiners across a range of different areas, including Cathal Bannon, Examiner in the Joinery category; Emer McGrath, Examiner in the Electrical category; Paddy Carroll, Examiner in the Plumbing category and Anthony Hoey, Examiner in the Automobile Technology category.

The County Louth Beekeepers Association in its commitment to educate the general public and especially children about the deterioration in the habitat of honey-

Students make it to the European Youth Parliament The European Youth Parliament (EYP) is an organisation that encourages European youth to actively engage in citizenship. It involves 50,000 young people from all around Europe in its events. EYP organises regional, national and international sessions, in which young people of different backgrounds come together to discuss and resolve issues facing Europe today.

The 2019 Leinster Regional Session took place in Loreto Abbey School in Dalkey from the January 25 to 27 and was attended by six Transition Year students from De La Salle College. Over 100 young people took part, and were split in 8 committees, tackling issues as diverse as drone warfare, obesity and Brexit.

100 of the participants from the 4 regional sessions (25 out of the 100+ at the Leinster session) were chosen to attend the National Session. The National Session is due to take place between April 15 and 19 in Galway City and two students from the De La Salle, Matthew Geraghty and Jonah Phelan, will be in attendance.

The first aspect of every session is team building – the participants gather in their respective committees and are guided through a series of team building exercises, in order to get to

know their fellow committee members better. Through these exercises, the participants develop skills that they will need in their committee work, such as problem solving, conflict management and communication.

Each committee will be assigned a country and will have to set up a stand representing that country on the first night at the Eurovillage – this is a fun way to get to know the people around you and learn more about the cultures of Europe. The session will be officially opened by the President of the session on the following morning at the opening ceremony. Then, committee work will start.

The delegates will have to discuss and debate their topics in order to create a Motion for Resolution. On the final day of committee work, the delegates will have a chance to unwind at the disco. The General Assembly takes place on the final day – each committee’s Motion for Resolution will be proposed, and then debated and voted on.

After the debates, the Closing Ceremony will allow the delegates to reflect on their week and will officially close the session.

This is a huge opportunity for young people to become actively involved and engaged in shaping European policy in the years ahead.

Ravensdale annual clean up

There was a great turn out for the Ravensdale Area Annual Clean Up which took place on Saturday. The clean up committee would like to give great credit to all who kindly offered up their time to volunteer for the annual event.

The committee would also like to thank Louth County Council, An Taisce, An Garda Siochana, The Sportsman Restaurant, The Lumpers Pub, The cubs, Dulargy

N.S, Crilly’s Shop and staff and all the neighbours who tidied up their own footpaths and roads to ensure the area was looking immaculate.

The great sense of community in the area was highlighted by neighbours leaving out treats and juices for all the cubs and kids who were out helping on the day. Those involved in the clean-up also did their bit for road safety by making ‘Stay

Safe’ posters which urged drivers to slow down and stay safe on our roads.

The clean-up took place under lovely sunshine and proved a huge success. The committee would also like to send their condolences to the McIntyre and Johnston families who lost loved ones recently. They would also like to send their congratulations to Claire Quinn who recently got married to Niall MacErlean.
