Last week Enda Kenny fired his starting gun signalling the beginning of this years General Election. Polling day has been set for Friday February 26 and Louth has 16 declared runners for what should be an intriguing battle for the five seats on offer. Last time out Seamus Kirk, Gerry Adams, Fergus O’Dowd, Ged Nash and Peter Fitzpatrick claimed the seats with Kirk automatically returned given his then status as Ceann Comhairle. This time around Kirk has stepped down meaning we will see at least one new face elected into the 32nd Dáil. Here’s a brief rundown of all 16 runners and riders who will spend the next two weeks pounding the pavements and knocking on doors in a bid to get that all important vote. Birthday surprise for Danny

By Paul Byrne A local Dundalk FC fan received a birthday present to remember when club midfielder Chris Shields arrived unannounced to his house with the league and FAI cup trophy under his arm. Danny O’Connell has been a Dundalk fan for as long as he can remember and as he celebrated his 24th birthday last Wednesday he had no idea that one of his club heroes was about to make his big day even more special. According to Danny he still has no idea how Chris found out about his birthday. Full Story on Page 7
