Last week Enda Kenny fired his starting gun signalling the beginning of this years General Election. Polling day has been set for Friday February 26 and Louth has 16 declared runners for what should be an intriguing battle for the five seats on offer.

Last time out Seamus Kirk, Gerry Adams, Fergus O’Dowd, Ged Nash and Peter Fitzpatrick claimed the seats with Kirk automatically returned given his then status as Ceann Comhairle. This time around Kirk has stepped down meaning we will see at least one new face elected into the 32nd Dáil.

Here’s a brief rundown of all 16 runners and riders who will spend the next two weeks pounding the pavements and knocking on doors in a bid to get that all important vote.

Birthday surprise for Danny

By Paul Byrne A local Dundalk FC fan received a birthday present to remember when club midfielder Chris Shields arrived unannounced to his house with the league and FAI cup trophy under his arm. Danny O’Connell has been a Dundalk fan for as long as he can remember and as he celebrated his 24th birthday last Wednesday he had no idea that one of his club heroes was about to make his big day even more special. According to Danny he still has no idea how Chris found out about his birthday.

Dundalk FC ease fans’ fears

Dundalk FC have released a statement to ease supporters fears that the club may have to play their home matches away from Oriel Park this season.

The statement was issued following a report in the Irish Times which suggested that a long running dispute with former Dundalk FC owner Gerry Matthews could jeopardise the club’s ability to get a Premier Division license if they list Oriel Park as their home ground.

According to the report in the Irish Times a letter had been sent to FAI headquarters by Gerry Matthews telling them that he and not Dundalk FC own the lease to Oriel Park.

Despite leaving the club in 2012 and transferring ownership of Dundalk FC to the new owners Andy Connolly and Paul

Browne, Matthews retained the lease to Oriel Park (leased by the Casey family who own the ground).

This has proven to be a sticking point between the new owners and Gerry Matthews with the club unwilling to do some much needed renovation work around Oriel Park while they do not hold the lease.

Talks between both parties have mainly centred around the lease issue with Gerry Matthews anxious to recoup some of the €4m he says it cost him to build the Youth Development Centre in 2010.

According to the Irish Times report, Matthews has now put two options forward to the club.

To pay him €250,000 in return for which he will sign over the lease and the YDC- or pay €100,000 in which case he would sign over the lease and dismantle the

YDC. According to Gerry he is owed money by the new owners in Oriel Park and he along with his business associates are just trying to get back what is theirs.

However, these claims have been vehemently denied by Dundalk FC through a statement released last Thursday.

“Dundalk Football Club does not have any long-standing financial dispute with Mr Matthews. This is not the first time that Mr. Matthews has stated publically that he is owed money by Dundalk Football Club.

However, this accusation is completely false.

“The only financial agreement with Mr Matthews was to pay an list of creditors that amounted to €192,000. This was paid in full.

“Therefore, we consider it very important that all of our supporters know that we do not owe Mr Matthews any

money and that we have adhered to all of agreements made with him at the time of the transferC of ownership.

CY “Dundalk FC have been successful every CMY year in our application K for a Premier License since the takeover was completed in 2013. We have followed a similar process this year as in previous years and will continue to work with the FAI’s Licensing Department and our legal advisors to clarify any issues that may have emerged by the former owner of Dundalk FC’s attempt to interfere with the licensing process.”

Gerry Matthews said he had nothing to say at the moment but would release a statement shortly.

Castletown pupils get in to spirit of things on Pancake Tuesday

THE aprons were on at Castletown Girls school this Tuesday when the Parents and Friends committee treated all of the students and teachers to fresh, homemade pancakes.

The creative girls from Junior Infants to Sixth Class were invited to decorate the pancake using a variety of delicious toppings.

This was the first year the school have made pancakes for the girls, according to Principal Ms McNally.

“It’s so much fun

for the girls to get the chance to do something different in school, and the Parents and Friends were more than happy to help out.

“We’re definitely considering making the event an annual event and already the girls are looking forward to next year’s pancake party”, explained Ms McNally.

Pancake Tuesday is a favourite for everybody and the girls in Castletown were excited to get the chance to eat lots of sugar and syrup before the beginning of Lent on February 10.

With Seamus Kirk retiring, Fianna Fail will be hoping either Declan Breathnach or Emma Coffey can maintain their presence in Louth.

Breathnach is based in Knockbridge the same village as the outgoing Seamus Kirk and he will be hopeful that this may be enough to secure him one of the five seats on offer. Drogheda based solicitor Emma Coffey is from Dundalk and she is hoping she may prove to be a dark horse and secure votes from both towns in what will be her first General Election.

Labour have been struggling in the polls lately but they have two runners in this race with sitting TD Ged Nash along with Senator Mary Moran putting their names forward.

Mark Dearey will put himself forward for a third time under the Green Party banner and the well known Dundalk publican

and County Councillor will be hoping it will be third time lucky as he aims to get elected.

Independents have been well supported in recent years and there are plenty of them under starters orders for this year’s General Election in Louth.

Both Maeve Yore and Kevin Callan have decided to join Shane Ross’s Independent Alliance.

Maeve polled very well in the 2014 local elections and is well known for her work with SNAP (Special Needs Active Parents) while Kevin made a bit of a stir last year when he resigned from the Fine Gael party over the water charges issue.

Garrett Weldon, a youth and community development worker based in Louth village, is running under the Anti Austerity Alliance-People Before Profit banner. This is his first campaign and he is hopeful that people’s appetite for a new voice can see him get in.

Direct Democracy Ireland, which has teamed up with the National Citizens Movement for this election, is running two candidates in this constituency – party leader Pat Greene and Anthony Connor.

Made distressing comments about murdered Garda A man who made distressing comments to a colleague of the late Dt Gda Adrian Donohoe and pleaded guilty to a number of thefts was sentenced to a total of 17 months when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Thomas Smyth of 88 Doolargy Ave, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, told the court that the thefts were a result of him trying to keep his family and feed his addictions.

The court heard that on February 27 last year, the defendant and his girlfriend entered a rental office on Earl St when a disagreement arose and he became abusive to staff. The Gardai were called and over the phone they could hear shouting in the background.

When the Garda arrived they met Mr Smyth in an agitated state coming from the office with his partner and children. He stated that the Garda thought he was a big man because he was in the branch but that “he could be got”.

He added that the bullet could

have been for him, with Insp Martin Beggy pointing out that it was a reference to the Garda being with Adrian Donohoe on the night he was shot. He repeated the reference a second time, while also making disparaging remarks about the ladies in the office.

Mr Smyth pleaded guilty to stealing four bottles of perfume valued at €300 from Smyth’s pharmacy and on another occasion taking razors worth €108 from Bradley’s pharmacy.

On September 30 last year he took vodka worth €19.99 from Costcutter, Clanbrassil St, and the previous day had had taken two bottles of vodka valued at €76 from Dunnes Stores at The Marshes.

On January 4 he took three electric toothbrushes to the value of €219 from Dunnes, and on January 2 took €430 worth of goods from Heatons. On Saturday September 20, 2014, he entered Bank of Ireland and took keys and a stamp from an unmanned

till. He returned four days later to return the items.

The defendant had 57 previous convictions and it was pointed out that he was on station bail when some of these thefts were carried out.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the series of thefts were bookended by two ridiculous scenarios. The offensive remarks made to the Garda were regretted but not meant to be taken seriously. He apologises and accepts they were distressing.

In relation to taking the keys from the bank he stated that the defendant didn’t think he would be able to gain entry to the bank and asked that this would not be treated as a serious endeavour.

Mr MacGuill added that his client hoped to get a place in a treatment facility.

Judge Flann Brennan said that Mr Smyth had a very bad record and imposed an eight-month sentence for the incident in the bank, and nine months consecutive for the remaining offences.

Bush Post Primary School Fifth Year student, Cathal Grogan, displayed his talent for writing when he came second in a national essay writing competition.

The school’s Fifth Year English class entered the “GOAL” National Essay Competition last November. The students were tasked with writing an open letter responding to the current refugee crisis in Syria and Cathal was awarded second place in the overall Senior category. It was a remarkable achievement considering there were over 1400 entries. Last Wednesday two representatives from GOAL paid a visit to the school to speak to the class about the crisis and to present Cathal Joe Corcoran English Teacher, Cathal Grogan and Kevin Joyce Principal with Aliah and Louise from GOA with his trophy.

Cross Cooley Challenge takes place in May The committee of the Cross Cooley Challenge has announced a repeat of the successful walks over the scenic Cooley Mountain where 245 trekkers enjoyed a day of fun and fundraising.

Last year €28,500 was raised for the very deserving causes of the

North Louth Hospice and the Maria Goretti Foundation.

In total this walk over the first three years has raised €72,500 of which 100% has gone directly to the above causes in different degrees. This year funds will be raised for the North Louth Hospice

and the Maria Goretti Foundation.

This walk of 15.5km will take place on Saturday May 7 starting from the Lumpers at 11am. taking the challenging walk across the Cooley Mountains into Carlingford.

The walk commences

at the Greenore Railway Saloon, Quay Street, Dundalk at 10am with registration and then buses to and from the drop off and pick up points. For those who are from the Cooley area registration will take place at 10.30am at the Lumpers entrance.

Castletown Girls’ School invited the grandparents of 1st Class in for a Craft Class, a discussion about school in the old days and a cup of tea in the Castletown GNS Parents’ Room. The children were amazed to hear about open fires, “an bata mór” and many other tales the grandparents had to tell.

One grandparent Georgina Drumm was one of five generations of her family that have attended Castletown GNS. Her grandmother, her mother, Georgina herself, her daughters and now her granddaughter Aobha Jane Davies have been students of Castletown over the years. Georgina’s mother also taught accordion to the students.

It was such a treat for the students and we thank the grandparents for giving up their precious time to spend celebrate Grandparents’ Day with their granddaughters.

Birthday surprise

From page 1 “Strangely I still don’t know how he found out. It was all a bit of a surprise really. I just heard a knock on the door and I went out and answered it and there was Chris Shields standing at the door with the two trophies. I was a bit shocked to say the least.

“For one of your heroes to go and do that for you is something else. He went out of his way to bring a smile to one of his fans on his birthday by bringing himself and the two trophies down. It’s not even like he was just in and out. He stayed for a short while and chatted away about those moments in winning the league title and in Aviva”, explained Danny.

“The club means everything to me, It all began I was a young fella, my brother got me to be mascot and then I’d say it wasn’t too long after he took me to the 2002 FAI Cup Final in Tolka Park which we won 2-1. In 2010 me and a few other lads started a group known as the Shed side Army with the aim of enhancing the atmosphere at games and we’ve had some serious moments together since.

“I’m proud to say we are the best club in Ireland but as well as that the players and the bond they have with the fans is very special. From Stephen Kenny, to all coaching stuff to Dr Samir to all the players after every game (whether they win lose or draw) they come all the way over in front of us to acknowledge and show their appreciation to the support we gave them.

“And just what ‘Shieldsy’ did for me surprising me on my birthday like that was something else.

They’re champions not only on the pitch but off it as well and they make you feel proud to support them”, added a delighted Danny.

Told Gardai she wasn’t driving A woman who crashed her car into a wall told Gardai she wasn’t driving at the time and reported her car stolen.

However, Michelle Clarke of 7 Langfield Close, Dublin Road,

Dundalk, later admitted that she had been driving the car.

The court heard that Gardai discovered that a car crashed at Ravensdale Park belonged to Ms Clarke.

When contacted by

Gardai she stated that she wasn’t’ aware the car was missing and as a result, reported it stolen.

However, on August 6 Gardai received a statement in the post admitting that she was

driving the car and had left the scene.

The defendant also failed to produce documents.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €300 fine in respect of three hit and run charges.

AINT Valentine’s Day is one of love and romance for some or a day of chocolate and cards for others and this Sunday will be no different for couples all over the globe.

It is one of the biggest celebrations of the year but many people will still be unaware that the day honours the death of St Valentine, a bishop and rebel who carried out secret marriages after they were banned by Emperor Claudius III. According to legend, Claudius wanted a huge, powerful army but found that that young men didn’t want to fight. He believed that this was due to their affinity for getting married and starting families and so banned young men from marrying.

However, Valentine believed in love and continued to marry couples in secret. Of course, he was caught and imprisoned by Emperor Claudius.

Some legends state that Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter Julia (who in some editions was blind, and healed by his devotion to her).

Before his execution on February 14 AD240, he wrote a love note to Julia signing it, ‘From your Valentine’, thus sending the first ‘Valentine’.

There is so much suffering and hardship in this world, so much turmoil that Valentine’s Day is more important than ever. People need to feel loved and appreciated and on February 14 they can get their wish. As well as Ireland, people are feeling the love in the UK, USA, Italy, Mexico, France, Australia, Denmark, and Japan.

Although it’s hard to imagine the day without the usual red and pink hue that seems to cover everyone’s eyes, other countries celebrate Valentine’s Day in more traditional ways. For example, it is customary in Denmark to send pressed white flowers (generally snowdrops) to their loved ones. In Turin it was common to

announce one’s engagement on February 14. No matter where they are living, all around the world people come together in the name of love on St Valentine’s Day. St Valentine’s Day allows people to express their romantic sides and show their loved ones they really care. Flowers, cards, chocolates, teddies are some of the many tokens of love sent on this day with gifts getting more and more extravagant each year. Jewellery, watches, trips away are becoming the norm for couples to send but it is important not to lose the true meaning of this holiday; that love is to be celebrated and cherished and that, to quote Hugh Grant, love actually is all around us.

Greenore Ferry confident it will get the go-ahead

One of the men behind the proposed Greenore to Greencastle car ferry service has insisted that the latest delay to launch the service is only a minor setback while stating that he is hopeful that the project will be up and running by summer.

Originally it had been hoped that the ferry service would be opened in time for Easter but according to Paul O’Sullivan those plans have been delayed slightly due to some changes to the original proposals by his company Frazer Ferries.

“We received planning permission last June but there have been a few obstacles to overcome in the meantime. We always knew going into this that there would be hurdles to overcome and we were under no illusion as to the amount of work that needed to be put in.

We’ve had to engage and listen to residents concerns and because we have been dealing with two different jurisdictions given the cross border aspect to

the project”, explained Paul.

“We had hoped to be up and running by Easter but there are some minor changes to our original proposals that need to be amended. One is simply just a typographical error in the planning permission document.

We are also seeking to amend road specification drawings previously approved by Newry, Mourne & Down Council.

There is an amendment needed on the type of propeller we intend to use and finally there is a condition which states that no vehicle bigger than two axles may be carried on the ferry which we think is unfair as many buses have three axles and we can’t see what difference carrying a bus with two axles or a bus with three axles would make.

“We are confident that these issues will be sorted out over the next couple of weeks and we fully intend to be up and running by summer. We are excited that we are almost ready to go and we are ready and waiting to get started once we

get the go ahead from the relevant authorities.

The decision to set up a ferry between Greencastle and Greenore has been vigorously opposed by locals who set up the Greencastle Area Residents group (GARG) to try and stop the project getting off the ground. It is thought that the group will once again object to these latest amendments by Frazer Ferries.

The group claim the decision will have a detrimental effect on Greencastle and the surrounding area, particularly with regard to the natural and built heritage as well as wildlife and environment. They feel that the building of a ferry terminal at the end of the existing country road will damage and destroy the assets within the wider area.

The Greenore-Greencastle crossing is just 1.1 miles by sea and would take 15 minutes on the ferry cutting out a 33-mile car journey of often more than an hour.

Suffered lapse while trying to change life A man who suffered a lapse in his attempts to rehabilitate himself was given the chance to complete Community Service instead.

Michael Cassidy of 39 Mountain View, Dundalk, was one of a number of people discovered trespassing at Mourneview Hall, Dundalk at 1.15am on September 9 last year.

The court heard that the 22-year-old had 33 previous convictions, and solicitor, Peter Lavery, asked that his client had gone to a party on the night and that the offence was more in line with public order than trespass.

He pointed out that the defendant had suffered with addictions problems in his youth but before being sent to

prison he had turned his life around and had matured.

However, on this occasion he made a mistake in taking a drink and he is not fit to drink any more. He suggested that Mr Cassidy had made one mistake and asked that he wouldn’t be sent back to prison.

Mr Lavery asked that his client be given a few months to liaise with the Probation Service and show that he is not likely to offend again.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that it was his view that the defendant should serve a sentence but stated that he would put the case back to May 4 for a report, recommending 100 hours Community Service in lieu of four months.

Rewarding week in Ramsay restaurant Old Dundalk

A local chef has returned home after spending an extremely tough but very rewarding week in Gordon Ramsay’s flagship restaurant in central London.

Ardee man Conor Halpenny who works in the Tankardstown House in Rathkenny earned his chance to work in the three time Michelin star restaurant after impressing judges in the Eurotoques Young Chef of the Year competition which was held in Dublin late last year.

The competition sees Ireland’s top five young chefs battle it out for the title of best young chef in Ireland and al-

though twenty one year old Conor was narrowly beaten to the top prize he impressed the judges so much he was invited to spend a week working in Gordon Ramsay’s London restaurant.

The opportunity to

work at the prestigious venue is usually only guaranteed to the winner of the competition but Conor made such a good impression he was given the chance to spend a week at the London restaurant – which has

a three month waiting list for a table. Speaking after a gruelling five day stint in the busy restaurant Conor said it was an extremely tough but very rewarding experience.

“I really, really enjoyed my time in London working in Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant. It was tough as the hours were very long and it was a completely different set up to what I’m used to but it was a fantastic experience and very rewarding for me personally. The restaurant was full for all day every day and there were 19 or 20 chefs in action the whole time”, explained Conor.

“It was very intense

and as the days went on I got more and more responsibility. It’s a completely new level to what I’m used to and Gordon’s restaurant cooks in the old style where in Tankardstown we have more modern dishes so that was different. Being a chef is very intensive and it can be a very pressurised environment but I love the adrenalin rush and the buzz that comes with it.

“Working alongside some of the best chefs in England in Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant was a very rewarding experience for me and I’m delighted to have been given the chance”, enthused Conor.

Society lecture The Old Dundalk Society is delighted to announce the second lecture in their 2016 centenary programme of events.

The Lecture entitled ‘Dublin Castle and Irish Sedition 19151916’, will be presented by Professor Eunan O’Halpin professor of contemporary Irish History at Trinity College Dublin.

The lecture takes place in the County Museum, Jocelyn Street, Dundalk, on Wednesday February 17, commencing at 8pm.

Professor O’Halpin was educated at UCD Dublin and Cambridge University, he has written widely on aspects of 20th Century Irish and British history, particularly on questions of defence, security and ‘intelligence’.

Professor O’Halpin has an excellent track record in delivering lectures on the 1913 to 1923 period. The audience will be guaranteed a stimulating, and interesting lecture.

Patrons are advised to come early, as there is limited capacity.

Man suffered broken jaw in altercation A man who was involved in the initial part of an altercation that left another man with a broken jaw was given a four-month suspended sentence when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Ronan McNeany of Cloonevan, Haggardstown, pleaded guilty to pushing a man to the ground at Earl St on October 7, 2012 but

stated that he didn’t know the person who caused the injuries while the victim was on the ground.

Barrister, Donagh McDonough, stated that while his client pleaded guilty to the offence he didn’t directly cause the injury.

A third party had kicked the victim five or six times and this was verified by an independent

witness.

Mr McNeany didn’t know the third party and hasn’t seen him since.

A sum of €2,000 compensation was paid to the victim by the defendant who had saved €1,000 and borrowed the remainder.

He stated that the qualified building surveyor is currently

unemployed but paying between €60 and €80 for his two children every week, with whom he is involved on a daily basis.

He added that the 35-year-old lives with his mother, step father and brother, and that he suffered from losing his father, and his brother in tragic circumstances.

His mother had a serious op-

eration before Christmas and he is responsible for caring for her from 7.30am to 5pm every day.

Mr McDonough added that the offence was out of character and he was at a low risk of reoffending. He asked the court to be as lenient as possible.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that while the defendant had no previ-

ous record, this was an extremely reckless act and the consequences were serious. He accepted that somebody else was involved but stated that Mr McNeany did commit an assault.

He added that it was a very serious matter as he imposed a four-month sentence, suspended for four months.
