The candlelight vigil was organised by members of Dundalk Municipal District and took place at the Maid of Erin statue outside the courthouse. Despite the cold weather an estimated 1500 people turned out for the vigil which included an interfaith reflection which included contributions from Fr Mark O’Hagan, administrator of St Patrick’s Parish, Imam Nooh from the Dundalk Islamic Community and Rev. Captain Geoffrey Walmsley representing the Church of Ireland.

The people of Dundalk came out in force on Monday evening to pay tribute to Yosuke Sasake the 24-year old Japanese man who was stabbed to death in town last Wednesday.

Speaking at the event Dundalk Municipal District Chairman John McGahon read out a statement from Yosuke’s family who wanted

to send a message to the people of Dundalk.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the kindness the people of Ireland have shown. When he was alive, our son spoke about the warmth of the people of this town and his love for Dundalk.

He came to Ireland initially as a language student and only intended

a short stay. However, he was touched by the kindness of the Irish people and he decided to work here.

“As a family, we are truly saddened by what has happened but we hope that this incident will not give Japanese people a bad impression of Ireland.

It has been a relatively quiet start to the year for Gardaí in Dundalk with regards to thefts and burglaries with no thefts reported during the first week of the new year and just two burglaries.

The first burglary of the new year took place during the early hours of the 2nd of January when a house was broken into on Coulter Place, Armagh Road. Kate O’Connor selected for Commonwealth Games Dundalk athlete Kate O’Connor has been rewarded for her excellent recent form with a place on the Northern Irish team for April’s Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The recently turned seventeenyear old St Gerard’s Athletic Club heptathlete enjoyed a hugely successful 2017 with outstanding performances in both the European Combined Team Championships in Monzon (Spain) and the U20 Athletics championships in Grosetto.

The Dundalk athlete qualifies for the Northern Irish team through her grandmother who is from Newry.

Speaking before Christmas, Kate’s father and coach Michael O’Connor, was thrilled that his daughter was in contention to travel to Australia with the Northern Ireland team.

“She has had a fantastic year and has worked very hard for this so that makes it all the sweeter for her. She took six or seven weeks off after Grosetto but she has been

back training a few weeks now and this nomination has given her even more drive to keep on improving,” explained Michael.

“The hard work will have to be put in now over the winter and although the majority of it will be indoors we will be hoping for a mild enough winter so we can train outdoors as well. She will train in Newry Jordanstown and around Dundalk in DKIT, Darver and Aura. It’s exciting times for Kate and we’re all looking forward to seeing her comKate O’Connor with parents Michael and pete in Australia,” he added.

Case struck out after payment to charity

An Armagh man who pleaded guilty to three public order offences escaped a conviction after agreeing to pay €300 to charity when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Kieran Gray (26) of 60 Foley Community Primary School, Ballymacnab Rd, Tassagh, Armagh, admitted charges of intoxication, threatening and abusive behaviour and failing to comply with the direction of a Garda at Park St On December 12 last.

John John Coughlan struck the matter out when the money was paid.

Dundalk slips further down the litter survey table

Dundalk have retained their ‘Clean to European Norms’ grading in the latest IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter) survey but only just. Dundalk have slipped back to 29th place the final spot for ‘Clean to European Norms, down from 26th position which they occupied in the last survey back in September.

The results represent Dundalk’s lowest ranking since January 2015.

Since that low they have climbed as high as 19 in the rankings but have been slipping steadily over the past year and a half.

The judges were particularly impressed with Dundalk Grammar School, The Recycle Facility and the Southern End of Clanbrassil St but noted that an area of the

“Approach from the North: Grade A. This was a fresh and clean route into Dundalk creating a positive first impression of the town.

Road suface and markings were in good order. There was a lovely recessed seating area surrounded by grass and trees opposite Aldi – this area was spotless.

“Approach from Castleblayney: Grade B. The litter which was found along this approach road was most obvious in front of the stretch of terraced red brick houses. The litter was mostly food related.

“Dundalk Grammar School: Grade A. The school grounds are in a mature setting whither

wonderful trees as a backdrop. All was in very good order and there was a complete absence of litter in the area surveyed.

“Recycle Facility: Grade A. All was in exceptionally good condition at this ‘managed’ facility. Not only was there an absence of litter but the whole environment was freshly presented.

“Clanbrassil Street: Grade A. The southern end of Clanbrassil Street deserves a special mention after extensive works have taken place.

It was a lovely ‘town square’ environment with paving, fountain, ornamental trees, low lying shrubbery, tiered flower boxes and street bins which provided the opportunity for recycling – it looked very well and there was an absence of

litter in the area.

“Derelict Site on Dublin Road: Grade C. This looks like a failed or stalled project at a former garage site. Apart from being an ‘eye-sore’ there was a variety of litter present, particularly fast-food wrappers.

“Dundalk Institute of Technology: Grade B. The overall impression on this campus of Dundalk Institute of Technology was generally a good one. The grass / shrubbery areas, car parking pathways, signage etc. were all in excellent order. However, the issue of cigarette butts has yet again brought down the grade – the butts were most pronounced at various entrances to buildings.

“Oriel Park – Sports Ground: Grade A. No litter was visible here.

“Dundalk Train Station: Grade B.The food related litter along the train tracks took away from what was otherwise a very freshly presented environment. The platform / pedestrian pathways were in good order and the remainder of the train station scored well.

“Dunnes Stores Car Park: Grade B. The bollards at the entrance were very fresh in appearance and the white bins looked clean and new. A variety of food related litter, some chewing gum and cigarette butts were present.

“Drogheda – Dundalk Link Road: Grade B. There was a definite litter presence along this route with a wide variety of food related litter to be found,” concluded the judging panel.

North East Runners are looking for new members

North East Runners are calling on those interested in taking up running to join them for the new year with Thursday night training sessions an ideal introduction to the club. The group meets at Finnabair Industrial Park at 6.15pm, in front of the three office blocks at the pond.

This session is suitable for all members and new runners. Depending on the weather, session is usually 30 minutes warm-up and exercises followed by 30 minutes of running at your own pace.

Registration fee is €30 for the year which gets you close to 100 training ses-

sions and it can be given to Jim Gonnelly, Michael Jordan, or whoever is leading the session.

Existing members renewal fees are €25 until January 15, €30.00 thereafter.

Training times are Tuesdays at St Helena 6.15pm for group one, 7pm for group

two. If in doubt, come to group one and we’ll see then which group is suitable for you.

A special word of thanks to Jim Callan for all the training session taken during the past year.

St Vincents bid for Young Scientist glory with four projects Dundalk Leader 10th January 2018

The 2017 Young Scientist and Technology exhibition kicks off today (Wednesday) at the RDS and Dundalk will be represented by three local schools at the ever-popular annual showcase.

Dundalk schools have a long proud history in this event and once again there are some fantastically innovative projects being put up for selection by some of the town’s brightest students. Eleven different projects have been submitted by students from St Vincent’s Secondary School (Four Projects), Bush Post Primary School (Five Projects) and the De La Salle (Two Projects).

This is the 12th year in a row that St. Vincent’s students have had projects qualified to exhibit in the finals of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.

The following is a summary of this year’s student projects.

Stress levels

Project title: An experiment to determine the effects of mindful meditation on stress levels and sleep patterns in adolescents.

This project is being carried out by a group of 2nd year students, Zara O’Shea, Grace Olamijuwon and Isabel Holmes.

The students hope to determine if practising mindful meditation regularly can help to relieve stress levels in youths and improve overall sleep quality.

Over 30 volunteers have taken part in the study & their sleep patterns were measured regularly using a sleep cycle app. The impact of meditation on stress levels was also determined by measuring blood pressure and heart rate before and after each meditation session, using an Omron blood pressure monitor.

The project is entered in the junior, Social & Behavioural Sciences category.

Muscle stretching

Title: An investigation into two types of stretching and muscle temperature increases pre, during and post stretch and implications for sporting performance.

Escapes conviction thanks to €300 charity payment A man who pleaded guilty to public order charges escaped a conviction after agreeing to pay €300 to charity.

Rolandas Martinkas (41) of 68 Castleross, Castletown Rd, Dundalk, appeared before

Dundalk District Court following an incident at Bridge St on December 2 this year.

He was charged with intoxication, threatening and abusive behaviour, failing to comply with the direction of

a Garda, and obstructing a Garda at The Crescent, Dundalk.

Judge John Coughlan stated that he would strike the matter out when the money was paid to charity.

Running group prepare for marathon

The social running group within North East Runners are now gearing up for their third Marathon training session with an information evening on January 10 in DKIT Campus on the Dublin Road.

Dumping of tyres at Edentubber condemned Sinn Féin Councillor Antóin Watters has condemned those who dumped in excess of 1,000 tyres at Edentubber Mountain as ‘disgusting and irresponsible’.

Cllr Watters said that before Christmas we were greeted with the sight of over 1,000 tyres abandoned and dumped at this remote site.

“David Loughran who found the tyres took to social media to highlight the extent of the problem and there was an outcry from local people at the audacity of anyone doing this. I contacted Louth County Council early in the new year and they confirmed the land was owned by Coillte and due to the scale of the problem, it would be a big undertaking to get them removed.”

TY students Darragh Callan and Aaron Carolan have invented, developed and prototyped a GAA glove which will eliminate the risks of spraining players’ wrists and fingers.

Their design is lightweight and does not add any bulk to the existing design of GAA gloves.

In the near future they hope to see their product being worn by GAA clubs nationwide.

Patrick Johnston, Andrew Moore and Liam O’Donnell are a trio of excellent social scientists in the making. Currently in TY, they are investigating a condition called Trypophobia, or a fear of objects containing lots of small holes.

Deirbhile O’Doherty, Demi Mulligan and Katie McGrath are three TY students who are working to open up Ireland’s eyes to the opinions its population

holds on one of the least spoken about topics – abortion.

Through the use of a large-scale survey, the girls aim to find out the differences in opinion that men have on abortion, compared to the opinions that women hold. The conclusions drawn from their project will have a large impact on the

current talks regarding holding a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment to the Constitution.

And last but not least 5th year sports scientists Gary Murphy, Brendan Woods and Ciarán Murphy are well under way in their research and testing to discover whether wearing a fitness tracker (Fitbit, Apple Watch etc.,) has a positive effect on a person’s fitness.

By looking at whether fitter people are more likely to buy fitness trackers and measuring the change in exercise routines of wearers of the trackers the group hope to come to a definite conclusion on whether or not trackers improve fitness.

Maybe don’t buy that fitness tracker until the January sales, when the group’s findings will be published and on display.

Irish Cancer Society launches lung cancer awareness month

People in County Louth have been urged to raise awareness of lung cancer which is the second most common form of cancer in Ireland.

At the launch of its Lung Cancer Awareness Month on Friday, it was revealed that 77 people in Louth were diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015.

However, it is also be-

lieved that there is a significant drop in the levels of awareness of the symptoms which has been described as very concerning by the Irish Cancer Society.

With over 2,500 cases diagnosed annually, including 77 cases in Louth in 2015.

Encore productions bring Shakespeare to Dundalk

The cast and crew of Encore Productions are geared up and ready to set sail to Prospero’s island and take on the biggest challenge of their acting career so far – bringing Shakespeare’s final play, the Tempest to stages across Ireland.

It is ten years now since the actors, who are all service users at RehabCare Resource centre in Dundalk, turned their attention to the work of ‘The Bard’.

2017 saw them involved in an immersive process of research as they got into the characters they would be playing through creating their own art work and poetry as well as improvising on the themes in the play – power and responsibility – love and desire – freedom and slavery.

To help them tease out the identity of the characters and to look a little at these themes in their own lives they teamed up with the Social Care Department of Dundalk Institute of Technology in an in depth study with a group of students there – resulting in art work and a performance on campus as well as an invitation to present their findings alongside contributers

from all over Ireland at an Arts Portal Day in Dublin College University back in May. To help with physical characterisation the group joined Quintessence Theatre company – Drama Group in residence with An Tain Arts centre Dundalk for workshops on archetypes – bringing their bodies to life and applying these new skills to the characters they were playing.

Shakespeare’s works make great demands on any actor who performs in them which meant a busy rehearsal schedule had to be adhered to over the year two full days every week in The Outcomers hall and in An Tain theatre where the group familiarised themselves not just with the stage but also with the technical elements of light and sound that they also would be controlling for themselves.

Audiences new to Shakespeare can rest easy in this performance which has condensed the action into a fast paced one hour show mixing voice recordings of other service users from the RehabCare Centre along side stunning videos created by local film maker Cara Holmes.

The costumes too are a feast for the eyes – tastefully created in period style by local seamstress Eileen Johnson.

Rehabcare resource centre in Dundalk is attended by around 60 service users every week – working on a range of skills to develop independence and allow people with intellectual disabilities to fulfil their potential.

Encore Productions are a theatre company based in RehabCare Resource centre Dundalk.

They have been devising and performing original shows and adaptations for over 16years.

The Tempest is their third Shakespeare production and has been funded by Creative Ireland. The show will tour venues including Queens University Belfast, DCU Dublin and NUI Galway immediately after entertaining their home crowd at An Tain Theatre, Dundalk.

Help young people reach for stars Youth Advocate Programmes (YAP) Ireland are looking for people based in Louth to work with young people and families to help them to reach for the stars and achieve their full potential.

YAP Ireland worked with 49 young people in Louth in 2017. Under the YAP model, children and young people with a range of complex needs, such as a risk of being taken into care, a risk of offending, mental health issues, or disabilities, are provided with intensive, focused support through developing a strong, trustbased relationship with their Advocate.

Siobhán O’Dwyer, CEO of YAP Ireland, said “We are looking for people who are passionate about helping their communities, working with young people and families, and building better outcomes for the people we work with.

This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to make a real difference in the lives of young people in Louth.

“The YAP model is an incredibly effective way of improving outcomes

for young people, with 84% of the young people we worked with in 2016 showing an improvement in their self-esteem and confidence; 78% showing an improvement in school attendance and 80% showing improvement in feeling withdrawn and isolated. 93% of those who were living at home when they commenced with YAP, remained at home at the end of the programme.”

Joan King, YAP Ireland Service Manager in Louth said “Under the YAP model, we purposely seek out Advocates living in the same community as our young people, to help to empower them to build up supports that will remain in place after they have completed the programme. PARENTS WARNED TO PREP CARS FOR SCHOOL RETURN Motorists are being advised to check the condition of their car this week, to coincide with the end of the school Christmas holidays, with AA Rescue warning that this week could be a particularly busy week for breakdowns.

In advance of the return of the school run, parents are being advised to start their car for a few minutes, particularly if it has been idle for a significant period of time over the Christmas period, to ensure their battery is still functioning. Motorists are also being advised to carry out some basic car checks, including that all lights are working, to ensure they are ready for the week ahead.

the past fortnight. Leaving a car idle, particularly in the cold weather we’ve seen recently, can result in older or weaker batteries no longer functioning and the car not starting as a result,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated.

“If you haven’t driven much in the last few days taking the proactive step of starting your car for just a few minutes can help you

avoid a panicked start to your morning.”

“For cars, and batteries in particular, cold weather is a nightmare and always brings with it an increase in breakdowns but if you stay ahead of the game and check that your car is in working order over the weekend you can minimise the risk of finding yourself stuck at home on Monday morning,” Faughnan added. “For those who have already

returned to work, it’s also advisable to start leaving a little earlier from next Monday as the end of the school holidays will mean increased traffic. The traffic situation won’t fully return to normal until colleges across the country return, but the quicker journeys and quieter roads that motorists experienced in the first week of 2018 will certainly come to an end.”

FUEL PRICES END YEAR AT HIGHEST LEVEL FOR 2017 The average cost of a litre of petrol and diesel in Ireland continued to rise in December 2017, according to recent analysis from AA Ireland – with both fuels ending the year at their highest per litre cost.

According to the AA’s monthly fuel prices survey a litre of petrol now costs an average of 138.3c, while diesel car owners can expect to spend 127.1c per litre of fuel. The latest increase meant that both fuels ended the year at their highest per litre price in the past 12 months, with petrol now at its most expensive since August 2015.

“While we can’t say for certain what the future will bring in terms of fuel prices, the fact that the cost of a barrel of oil continues to trend upwards is a cause for concern. Since August of last year we have seen continued, incremental monthly increases in the cost of both fuel and diesel, meaning more and more motorists are now feeling the pinch when it comes to covering their commute to work,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “Motorists

will be hoping that this trend reverses itself in 2018, but in the short term at least that doesn’t look likely.

The continued rise in oil prices is seen as the main factor in the latest increase in fuel costs, with the cost of a barrel of oil floating between $62 and $68 from early December and into January 2018.

“While the future of motoring will be less reliant on fossil fuels, in the mean-time people still need to be able to afford the cost of their commute to work.

For some there are alternatives,

such as public transport or cycling, but these aren’t feasible for everyone and particularly not for those living in rural Ireland where the public transport options simply aren’t there,” Faughnan added. “In the shortterm people can save on their fuel costs by car-pooling, using alternative methods of transport where possible, or even availing of deals such as the AA’s offer to members of 4c off every litre of fuel purchased at select stores which is available through our app, but what is truly required is government recognition of the negative impact of excessive taxation on petrol and diesel.

According to the AA, an average motorists who drives 12,000 miles per year (19,200 km) at a fuel consumption rate of 30 miles per gallon (9.42 litres per 100 km) will use 150 litres of fuel per month. At current prices that motorist will pay this €207.45 per month for petrol of which €129.95 is tax. Meanwhile, a motorist driving a diesel powered vehicle will spend €190.65 per month on fuel, of which €112.41 is tax.
