A tumultuous season for Dundalk FC ended on a glorious high as Filippo Giovagnoli’s side saw off league champions Shamrock Rovers to win the FAI Cup for the twelfth time in the club’s history. David McMillan was the hero of the day with the striker scoring only the third ever hattrick in an FAI cup final to help his side see off Rovers 4-2 after extratime. The victory sparked scenes of jubilation around town as supporters lined the streets from Hill St. Bridge to Clanbrassil St. to greet the players and coaches home as the team bus rolled into town just after midnight.

Réalt na Mara raise €800 for Dublin Zoo A DUNDALK primary school has raised €800 for Dublin Zoo in a bid to support an appeal to help its animals.

Réalt na Mara teacher Ms Emmajane Larkin decided to fundraise after hearing a news report that the future of Dublin of Zoo was uncertain after closing their gates for the second time this year due to Covid.

“I have very fond memories of visiting Dublin Zoo as a child with my family and therefore when I heard about the Animal Adoption Programme, I was eager to get to involved,” she said.

Both the staff and pupils of Réalt na Mara were very keen to get on board to raise funds to help save the zoo.

Dublin Zoo rely on ticket sales for almost 90% of their funding to cover the cost of animal care at the Zoo. “The Student Council led by Mrs Holland have been busy the past two weeks doing fantastic work raising awareness in the school,” she said.

The pupils at Réalt na Mara have been very engaged in learning all about the animals at the zoo through the Dublin Zoo website which has many online resources available such as activity booklets, videos, news updates, animal naming competitions and live web cameras

of the animals at the zoo.

This programme has created a lot of excitement among the pupils in Réalt na Mara as the classes now eagerly await their adoption packs and certificates from Dublin Zoo. Réalt na Mara will be adopting a range of animals from the zoo including elephants, giraffes, snow leopards, hippopotamus, red pandas, sea lions, okapis

and zebras.

Réalt na Mara Principal Mr Phil McCaul was happy to see the school support this good cause.

“It is such an Irish trait to jump in to help where help is needed.

In this case, it was the animals in Dublin Zoo who were in need. By helping them, we feel a new deeper sense of involvement with the zoo and its glorious animals,” he said.

“I would like to thank Ms Larkin who spearheaded this initiative. There is a great sense of well-being in the school as a result of our collective efforts.

I have a feeling that this will be the gift that keeps on giving and I am very proud of our whole school community. We look forward to seeing our range of adopted animals when we visit our zoo in the near future.”

Yore welcomes the launch of Operation Revolve in Dundalk Independent councillor Maeve Yore has welcomed the launch of Operation Revolve in Dundalk. She first raised issues relating to cyclists, motorists and cycle paths in Nov 2019 at the Joint Policing Forum Meeting after people with disabilities, senior citizens, residents associations and home-owners who live on busy streets contacted her asking for action.

Over the last few years she feels there are increasing problems with Cyclists on footpaths, cars parking on cycle lanes, and cyclists with no lights or hi viz clothing.

Operation Revolve’s aim is to increase cyclist, vehicle and pedestrian road safety by way of education, engagement, encouragement and if all else fails enforcement of the rules of the road.

Operation Revolve is being piloted in Dundalk and will then be rolled out throughout

Independent Cllr Yore was instrumental in directional arrows being installed on Dublin Rd and Avenue Rd Cycle Lanes, and as far back as Jan 2017 she contacted Gardai, large factories on Xerox Campus and the International Office and Students Union DKIT to ask them to encourage the correct use of cycle lanes - following on from motorists who had ‘near misses’

with cyclist cycling on wrong side of these roads.

She also states that LCC has a responsibility to work on and apply for funding for ‘joined up’ safe, regularly cleaned and maintained cycle lanes across the County. She has asked LCC to get input/ advice from experienced, responsible cyclists and Local Authorities like Dún Laoighaire Rathdown who have vast knowledge of best

practice of cycle lanes.

Cllr Yore also feels cyclists should be equally respected by motorists on the roads.

The Independent Councillor acknowledged and thanked Chief Supt Christy Mangan and his Gardai for their commitment to Road Safety for All with the Launch of Operation Revolve and looks forward to working on more initiatives with him for the People of Louth.

Marshes to celebrate Christmas with lightshow extravaganza

Santa ready for Christmas at Marshes

Safety is the watchword as Marshes celebrates its 15th Christmas with a spectacular outdoor light extravaganza set to spark Dundalk’s festive spirit.

Santa Claus won’t be meeting children in his grotto this year, but features as part of the dazzling display, climbing the front outside wall of the popular shopping centre.

He has also confirmed he will be visiting local children, as usual, on Christmas Eve.

Youngsters will also have the opportunity to take a phone call from Santa if they post their letter to him from the socially distanced writing studio his elves have built on the Marshes mall.

However, they must remember to take their pencils home.

The innovative and magical outdoor festive light display, lasting three minutes, will be beamed on to the wall at the main entrance at Marshes, commencing every 15 minutes

at dusk from December 13-19.

Featuring compelling Christmas imagery, and the first of its kind in the north-east, the magical spectacle will warm winter nights for shoppers and families.

Designated standing positions will be marked at the front of Marshes to ensure customers stopping to watch can distance appropriately.

Four lucky children who post their letter from the studio will receive a phone call from

Santa.

“It’s important everybody stays safe this Christmas, so unfortunately I won’t be able to meet boys and girls at Marshes,” said Santa, taking a break from Christmas preparations at the North Pole.

“But I will be visiting the homes of local boys and girls on Christmas Eve. According to centre manager, Seán Farrell, Marshes was overjoyed to receive Santa’s help for its Christmas plans.

“I have thanked Santa and his elves for helping ensure a Christmas to remember at Marshes,” said Seán.

“He has been very good to agree to appear in our stunning outdoor light display, which marks 15 years of Marshes.

“Marshes wants to do everything it can to ensure Christmas stays special and safe for its customers and their families.

“We want to light up Christmas in the north-east without crowds gathering.

Easing of restrictions in nursing homes

THE Director of Nursing at a Dundalk nursing home has praised residents and their families as new guidelines from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre come into effect.

Until now, only window visits to nursing homes were permitted between Levels 3 and 5 of the Plan for Living with Covid-19.

However, from Monday, December 7 one visit by one

person per week should be facilitated at Levels 3 and 4 for residents who wish to receive visitors.

“We are still trying to carefully manage the situation. We’ve worked very hard to keep things at bay,” said Director of Nursing St Francis Nursing Home (Mount Oliver) Leoni Ewings.

“It’s wonderful for the residents and their families as long as things are carefully managed. We don’t want

families to feel like pariahs coming in in terms of bugs.

“If we are careful, there’s no reason why residents can’t enjoy time with their families. All our staff are tested every two weeks.

“The families have been very good and have worked very hard with us. We are encouraging them to ring and book their visits in advance.

The social aspect is very important for residents.”

If the country is moved back to Level 5, it would be

restricted to one visit by one person every two weeks.

Residents can also have an extra visit during the Christmas period. Under the new rules it is recommended the visits are limited to one hour.

There is no requirement that they are by the same person each week but they must pre-planned.

Longer visiting times and more visitors may be allowed in certain circumstances such as end of life.

Student nurses express anger over government voting against paying them

Last week’s decision by the government to vote against a bill that would see a core group of healthcare workers, student nurses and midwives, paid during the pandemic left many people outraged at what they perceived to be a lack of fairness towards that sector.

Last Wednesday night, the Government rejected by 79 to 72 votes a Solidarity-People Before Profit motion to reinstate pay for those student nurses who worked and were paid as healthcare assistants during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Currently fourth-year students are paid €9.48 an hour for clinical placement work over 36 weeks while first, second and thirdyear students are eligible only for a weekly €50 accommodation allowance.

Aoife McCabe a fourth year general nursing student in DkIT was one of many people angered following last Wednesday’s vote.

“To be honest the whole thing has left a very sour taste in my mouth and it’s made me think maybe I don’t want to stay in Ireland when I qualify. Everybody in my class is annoyed and we feel as though we have been taken for granted and exploited.

I was actually luckier than some as I had just finished my 18 week placement the week the country shut down due to the pandemic back in March. I know other student nurses were thrown in at the deep end in very busy hospitals and used to fill gaps in the staff roster.

“Placements are meant to be about learning but even in my own

placement there wasn’t anybody available to teach me anything as everybody is so busy and you end up being thrown in at the deep end and working as hard as anybody else for no pay.

I was counted as a full member of staff rather than a student who was there to learn. It’s very frustrating and the fact that the health minister didn’t even bother turning up for the vote was very disrespectful,” stated Aoife.

Ralph, who is also a fourth year general nursing student in DkIT echoed Aoife’s sentiments stating that he found it shocking that the government voted against the motion to pay stu-

dent nurses.

“I found the whole thing quite shocking to be honest. The fact that the government didn’t feel the need to give student nurses what they are due despite them putting their lives on the line during the worst of the pandemic beggars belief. When I was on placement I was told I wasn’t allowed to work elsewhere due to fears of cross infection. Many students rely on part time jobs to fund their studies as they are only eligible for €50 a week which doesn’t go far.

“I tested positive for COVID due to working on the frontline when on my placement in October and although you are meant to be learning on your placement the situation now means you are for all intents and purposes a full member of staff. Many of my friends have been used to plug gaps and help cover shifts when wards are short staffed. They are put into very high pressure situations, working

long hours and putting themselves at risk of getting Covid all for no pay. This whole thing has completely and utterly shaken my faith in the system to be honest.

I never would have been anti-government before but this whole episode has really angered me,” stated Ralph.

Meanwhile, many registered nurses locally have also expressed their anger at the fact that they have to pay a €100 annual retention fee to the NMBI despite everything they have done this year to help in the battle against coronavirus. Failure to pay this fee would result in a nurse losing her registration. Melissa Garvey, a nurse in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda insisted appreciation for their efforts must be tangible and amount to more than just applause.

“On Monday Nicola Sturgeon Scotland’s first minister announced a once off payment of £500 for Scotland’s NHS

and social care staff who worked through the pandemic, acknowledging that while applause was important, appreciation must be tangible.

On Wednesday our government voted against student nurses being paid little over minimum wage for their frontline work in the second phase of the pandemic,” stated Melissa.

“How hollow the praise and the applause of those same TD’s. Is it a mere facade of appreciation for those caring for the most vulnerable at immense personal risk. Let’s not forget that nurses form the highest cohort of those health care workers who became inflected with the virus.

“The proposed waiver of the NMBI 100euro annual retention fee is the very least the government can do to show appreciation for our efforts. We have enough of their applause, to quote Nicola Sturgeon ‘appreciation must be tangible’,” she concluded.

Paul Kavanagh­—A Lifetime through a Lens Paula Kavanagh, local photographer, and daughter of well-known and internationally acclaimed photographer Paul Kavanagh, has today launched a book of her father’s work showcasing a local, regional, and national history photographic timeline that is colourful, defining, and evocative and covers 60 years.

The book features some of Paul’s most iconic images, selected from over 500,000 photo negatives that have been painstakingly catalogued, archived and stored in the Co. Louth Archival Office over the past four years.

Paul Kavanagh had a remarkable career in Photography and PhotoJournalism during which time he recorded some of the most important and historic moments and events of our past, recording the everyday lives of the people, industry and events across Dundalk, Donegal and Derry. The archive is unsurpassed in terms

of importance, posing as a time capsule and vignette of our local, regional, and national history and culture.

A section of the book is dedicated to his work capturing the impact of the Troubles on both sides of the border. He was on the front line of the Troubles from its beginnings in 1968, where he took significant risks to ensure he was front and centre with his camera, recording for posterity some of the most important events in our

history both in photographs and in newsreel for RTE. This led to Paul being one of the first people on the scene at the infamous Kay’s Tavern bombing in Dundalk in 1975, recording the tragic events of that evening both in film and in photographs.

In 2020, Paul was honoured by The SEEK Arts Festival in Dundalk. His self-portrait on Bachelor’s Walk incorporates one of his most legendary photographs of Dundalk’s past, the

Chipperfield’s Circus elephants as they parade through town. A second photograph that Paul took of men leaving the GNR for the final time also forms a mural on Gray’s Lane.

The book is a labour of love by his daughter Paula, to remember her father and celebrate a rich career that has left a valuable archive for the people of Dundalk.

Brendan recalls visit of Ray Clemence to town D Last week saw the sad news of the passing of former England and Liverpool goalkeeper Ray Clemence.

For many around Dundalk his death would have ignited memories of the brilliant goalkeeper’s visit to Dundalk in 1980.

That visit was organ-

ised by former Emerald Sports shop owner Brendan Waters who payed tribute to the player this week.

“Ray Clemence, Liverpool, Tottenham & England goalkeeping legend passed away last week and I’d like to add my condolences to his family and

friends. The mention of Ray brings back memories of a special day over 40 years ago here in Dundalk.

Memories, not just for me and my family but for hundreds of football fans who still remember his visit to Emerald Sports on July 31st, 1980,” stat-

Dundalk local Olive Murphy was named a winner in the Arts, Culture and Festivals category in the national Volunteer Ireland Awards for her commitment to Scaleforce, an adult music group.

Olive set up Scaleforce because she could see the need for adults to connect or reconnect to playing musical instruments but did not want finances to be a barrier. She also could see that connecting people through music could be a great social outlet for people and that formal music lessons or settings may take the joy out of the music for people so she has created a unique group encouraging adults to take up playing traditional music that is very inclusive with people of all ages and abilities participating.

“It was such a lovely surprise and I was delighted to know (my son) Eoghan knew and helped Louth Volunteer Centre and Volunteer Ireland to organise the surprise. I loved the

This is the second year in a row that a Dundalk local has won at the Volunteer Ireland Awards, with Eric

Beggs winning in the Health and Disability category in 2019 for his work with Fighting Blindness.

These awards give us a chance to say thank you and celebrate the difference volunteers make every day.”

Bringing festive fun to Dundalk this Christmas Starting this Thursday families in Dundalk will be able to track down and bring the ‘Christmas Spirit’ to life on their smartphones, thanks to Dundalk BIDS and Dundalk Credit Union.

The Christmas Spirit Trail revolves around a magical story that includes Albert Claus, the less famous brother of Santa Claus. His job is to maintain the Spirit of Christmas by spreading joy bubbles on Christmas day, but he’s gone missing! By visiting the trail stops and speaking

to each of the cheerful ‘Spirits of Christmas’, families will learn what has happened to Albert and, finally, be able to solve the mystery, save him and win a heartwarming Christmas e-book.

The trail will be available to follow up until, and including, New Year’s Day and stretches from Dublin Street to Church Street, where ten ‘Christmas Spirit’ characters, all specially created for the trail, have been placed for families to find. It is completely free to take part in

Gardai attacked in Dundalk ‘Disgusting, disheartening and an insult to us all’ was how Cllr Seán Kelly, Chair of Dundalk Joint Policing Committee, described the weekend’s two separate attacks on members of the Garda force in North Louth.

On Saturday a garda, aged in his 20s, was struck by a car on the M1 Motorway. At 1.45pm the garda and his colleagues from the Roads Policing Unit pulled over a car along the northbound carriageway near junction 20, while conducting speed checks. The car came to a stop and the Garda walked from his patrol vehicle to speak to the driver. The driver then accelerated suddenly, hitting the

Garda and throwing him to the side before fleeing the scene.

In a second incident, a garda, also aged in his 20s, was hospitalised after allegedly being attacked during a drugs search in Dundalk. A man has since been charged with assault. The alleged assault occurred as two gardaí questioned a man following the seizure of a small amount of drugs at a house in the Glenwood Area at about 9pm on Saturday.

Cllr Kelly commented ‘Given what has happened in the last number of years within this Garda district and the huge sacrifices made by members of the force it is disgusting, disheartening and an insult to us all that

a small minority of people still have no little respect for members of the Gardai. It is one of the few jobs where a person leaves home each day not knowing what they are going to face, they are placing their lives on the line to protect us and our community. Yet some people believe it’s acceptable to attack them like the two incidents that happened on Saturday. Let’s hope both Gardai get well soon and return to front line service and those responsible are caught and brought to justice.’

Speaking following the news that two Gardaí had been hospitalised following incidents in North Louth and Dundalk on Saturday, Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú said: ‘These two Gardaí were injured and required hospital treatment following two serious, unrelated incidents.

‘I would ask anyone with information on either incident to come forward to Gardaí as soon as possible.

‘I have spoken to Gardaí in Dundalk about both incidents, which took place during routine Garda work, and I hope that both of those who were hurt will make a full recovery’.

Eighth sleepout for Simon a success The eighth annual ‘Sleepout for Simon’ took place last Friday night with many taking part to raise some much-needed funds for the Simon Community in Dundalk. The event was a huge success with over €25000 raised so far at the time of going to press.

This year the fundraiser had a slight change of format with the Simon asking people to support the event virtually if possible by forgoing their beds and sleeping on a floor to try and raise money.

The annual event has been a huge success since its inception in 2013 and before this year had raised over €70,000 for the Simon.

Maeve Curtis who started the initiative with her husband Terry seven years ago was delighted with the response from the local community and thanked everybody who did their bit to help the Simon community.

“Myself, my husband Terry and two of our friends camped out in the back garden on Friday evening,” noted Maeve. “We are all

Cookbook for charity Covid has not stopped one school in Dundalk from using every skill available to them to help out those in need this Christmas.

Two separate groups have publications on offer for the Christmas market, and both are equally worthy.

Sixth year Art students, under the guidance of their teacher local artist Fergal Kilkenny, have created a beautiful cookbook, full of their favourite recipes, but also their artistic interpretations of the same dishes. The girls each brought a recipe from home, not from any other cookbook, then designed the layout of the presentation of their recipe, and painted all the illustrations themselves.

The books are on sale from the school for €10 each and all proceeds go to three worthy charities, Doras, Shine and Breast Cancer Ireland.

ject box. Students Mia and Ellen were delighted to be part of the initiative. Ellen said: ‘It was lovely to be involved in this project this year. We have been studying art since first year and it is a really lovely way to remember our classmates forever. The fact that the funds are going to charity is important to us this year when so many families have been affected so adversely by the difficulties surrounding COVID-19.’

Mia agreed: ‘Ellen and I got the chance to design the front cover which was great - and we hadn’t really worked with watercolour markers that much before so it was lovely to have the chance to exploit the new medium. It also means of course that I have all my Christmas presents sorted for this year!’

Louth Spending Twice National Average

A report has revealed that people in Louth are spending nearly twice the national average this Christmas. People in Louth have an average spend of €1,079 compared to the national average of €541 across Ireland. According to research released by PayPal* this week the biggest spending counties were found to be Louth (€1,079), Westmeath (€870), and Leitrim (€853). Almost half of Irish consumers (49%) intend to get their Christmas presents online this year. The research also revealed that 62% plan to buy locally and from smaller retailers in a bid to support them during Covid-19.

Busiest breakdown day since Beast from the East The recent spell of cold weather has led to a sudden surge in breakdowns on Irish roads according to a leading breakdown assistance provider.

On 07 December, AA Ireland attended to 680 car breakdowns across Ireland – marking the organisation’s busiest day on the roads since March 2018 when the country was hit by the Beast from the East. With a large percentage of the breakdowns resulting from battery issues, the AA is reminding motorists that if your car struggles to start in the morning, particularly during cold weather, it could be a sign that your battery is at risk of failing.

Of the breakdowns attended to by the AA on Monday, 34% were related to a car breakdown or failure to start while the motorist was still at home.

“While the recent weather

hasn’t been anything to rival the Beast from the East, the cold dip comes at a time where many of us haven’t been using our cars as regularly or found them parked up in the driveway for days at a time. When you combine a lack of usage with cold weather, any issues with your battery, such as age, will be exposed and likely result in the car failing to start.”

Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “Some of us are now starting to travel a little more regularly, but traffic volumes are still down on the pre-COVID norm, so if you do find that you’re still using your car less regularly then we would encourage you to leave it run for 15-20 minutes in an open space to reduce the risk of the battery leaving you down.”

“If you do experience a battery-related breakdown, our patrols can supply and fit a new

battery where necessary to help minimise the inconvenience and reduce the risk of any repeat battery issues in the future.”

In the period since COVID-19 restrictions have been eased, the AA has noticed a steady increase in breakdown callouts. In the past 7 days, the number of breakdowns reported to the organisation has increased by 25% on the previous days, with a large proportion of breakdowns attended by the AA in recent days occurring at shopping centres.

In total, 57% of breakdowns reported to the AA on Monday, 7 December occurred within the Greater Dublin region.

“Since the restrictions have been eased, our roads are gradually getting busier and both our Rescue and Roadwatch teams have noticed an increase in activity around shopping centres across the country".

Voluntary Groups Funding

Community and voluntary groups in County Louth will receive an additional €55,193 in Government funding to help them deal with Covid-19. The funding, which is allocated under the COVID-19 Emergency Fund, was confirmed today by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, and Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities, Joe O’Brien TD. In order to access the funding, groups and organisations should check with the County Louth Local Community Development Committee who will be administering the funding to groups in each area with the support of Louth County Council.
