Work on the new Municipal Athletics Track in Dundalk is due to begin before the end of this month. The first turning of the sod will take place in ‘two or three weeks’ according to Deputy Peter Fitzpatrick who has been a long-time advocate for the building of a new track.

The new track will be built on the former Pitch and Putt Course in Muirhevnamor (Muirhevnamor District Park) and the ambitious project will initially see the development of a grass track and a general training area which

will be used by local athletics clubs as well as the general community.

Six athletics clubs (St Peters A.C, Mountpleasant A.C, Blackrock A.C, St Gerards A.C, Dún Dealgan A.C and the North-East Runners) formed together to create a LTD company under the name of Dundalk Athletics Association and alongside DKIT and Louth County Council they are the driving force to ensure this project gets completed. The project is expected to cost in the region of €1.6m.

Work to begin on new Dundalk Athletics Track From Page 1

Grant has been secured towards the installation of the track and this will be used during phase 1 of the project.

The facility will be managed by Louth County Council and subject to further funding. At a later date it will include

an artificial surface running track which can be used to host national and international events.

According to Deputy Fitzpatrick all involved with the project are hopeful of receiving further regional sports capital grants in the near future as work begins on the long-awaited

project.

“This is a very important project for the town and we are badly in need of a fit for purpose athletics track to support the many brilliant athletes we have around the County.

“Work is going to begin at the former pitch and putt course at Hoey’s Lane in a

few weeks and we have been working very closely with Louth County Council to make sure everything is ready to go with regards to grants etc.

“The first phase will involve levelling the site and getting it ready for phase two when the track will be built.

Parents of pupils from Coláiste Lú continued their campaign for restoration of a full Irish education for their children with a visit to Leinster House last week.

Students and parents travelled to Leinster House to outline their grievances to Minister for Education Joe McHugh while also asking him to intervene in the dispute. In response the Department of Education has put forward seven options in an attempt to resolve the dispute. In a letter addressed to Martin O’Brien, the CEO of the Louth Meath Education Training Board the Department outlined several possible solutions to end the dispute including: -Increased teacher allocation to LMETB. -Sourcing teachers who are capable of teaching through the medium of Irish from within the LMETB area -Sourcing suitable teachers from those who have retired/other education provision -Engagement with Gael Choláisití in nearby areas for the purpose of supporting the Aonad -Provision of bus service to Coláiste Oiriall -E-Teacher role -Upskilling teachers The letter concluded by advising the LMETB ‘to discuss with ETBI implementation of this programme to help provide solutions to the Aonad in

the medium term’. It went on to say that ‘a number of these options have the potential to provide a solid basis for addressing future issues would they arise while also securing the long term future of the Aonad and reassuring parents of the commitment of LMETB in this regard.”

In response to this letter Aiden Kinsella the secretary of the Coláiste Lú Parents council thanked the Department of Education for the offer to provide additional resources to Coláiste Lú but asked for some clarity about the workings of some of the suggestions issued.

“Thank you for your offer to the patron to provide additional resources to the pupils of Coláiste Lú to assist in ensuring that mitigation measures for pupils, particularly exam year pupils, to provide extra supports could be put place. Given the level of disruption that has been caused, any and all resources are welcome.

“We are due to meet the CEO of LMETB on Tuesday October 8, and hope to hear how he intends to draw down and utilise the resources for the benefit of the children. We would like to provide some clarity to some of the points made in your letter.

Students appeal for graduation ceremony to remain in college

A row has erupted in DkIT following the decision to move the annual college graduation ceremony to an external venue. The graduation ceremony will take place from October 30 to November 1 in the Town Hall in Dundalk

despite protests from both students and staff against the decision.

Traditionally the graduation ceremony takes place in the college but this year DkIT president Michael Mulvey has opted to have the ceremony in the Town Hall, a decision which has proved divi-

a statement on Friday afternoon expressing the students disappointment at the decision and calling for President Mulvey to reverse his decision immediately.

“I am writing this follow up statement to express our disappointment at the DkIT President’s unilateral decision to move the venue of the pinnacle event of the college calendar to another external venue instead of taking the graduation home to DkIT where it belongs.

“As I’ve stated in my previous statement the main issue we have is

the damage to the fabric of the DkIT community, over many years the main value of graduation has been the opportunity of students from all backgrounds alongside their parents, family and friends to meet staff in a place where their education took place. The town hall is not the venue where our education has taken place.

“We need to make it clear to Mr Mulvey that the decision to move graduation to an external venue was not, is not, supported by the DkIT community. The

issue is not with which external venue, it’s our opposition to any external venue. We want to bring Graduation home to where it belongs DkIT. “As stated in my previous statement I am calling on Mr. Michael Mulvey, President of DkIT once again to revert his decision immediately and allow Our 2019 graduation go ahead in its normal venue Our College, Our Campus, Our DkIT,” concluded the statement.

Meanwhile the DkIT branch of the Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) have publicly declared their support for the students with DkIT Teachers Union of Ireland Chair Kenneth Sloane stating that ‘while staff and students fully support initiatives which forge a greater bond between DkIT and the wider town of Dundalk, the decision to move the graduation ceremony has been made without any consultation with students or staff and clearly does not have the support of the college community’.

St Gerard’s Novena commenced yesterday (Tuesday) in Dundalk and once again large crowds were in attendance for the opening ceremonies.

The Novena, which is one of the most popular traditions in the region, will continue daily until Wednesday October 16.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Called to be Saints; Living the Beatitudes, and it has an added significance in that it will be the first

to be overseen by new rector, Fr Noel Kehoe, while it will also be an opportunity to showcase the extensive renovations that have been completed at the church.

The guest speakers are among the many reasons why people attend in such large numbers and this year, they include Anne Walsh from Canada, while Jane Mellet from Trocaire will also be addressing the congregation.

Another visitor from overseas is Fr Kevin O’Neill from the United States, while Fr Michael Kelleher and Fr Gerry Moloney will also attend the Novena.

The Blessing of the Babies is one of the highlights of the nineday Novena and this year it will be held on Sunday October 13th at 2.30pm. Meanwhile the Healing Mass with anointing of the sick will take place on Saturday October 12 at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

There will be a candlelit Mass every evening at 10.30pm, and 9pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Local cyclists in action The first round of the Ulster Cyclo Cross league was held on Sunday last in Lurgan Park where Cuchulainn man PJ Hynes had an excellent start by winning the B race.

PJ had a quick start and by the second of five laps had moved to the front. Throughout the race he had a good battle with Benny Smyth from Newry, a regular at

the Bike Station Cycling League, with the pair separated by less than 10 seconds at the end.

In the underage races Cuchulainn had 9th and 10th place in the Under 14 boys with Eoin Holmes and Callum McCaffrey.

Rhiannon Dolan was fifth in the under 14 girls. In the under 12 boys the club had three rides with Shane Meegan, Dylan Haughey

The Under 12 girls had Ffionn Dolan in second with Grace O`Rourke missing a spot on the podium in fourth spot by just two seconds. Also not to much further back was Holly McCaffrey. Finally in the under 10 boys Micheal o`Rourke had a great race finishing in the top half of the field.

Boil water notice lifted for some customers Irish Water in partnership with Louth County Council and following consultation with the HSE has lifted the Boil Water Notice for customers in the following areas with immediate effect: Louth Village; Knockbridge; Carnalogue; Mills of Louth; Knockdillon and surrounding areas. It has been possible to part-lift the Boil Water Notice following works carried out at the Tallanstown Water Treatment Plant.

However, the Boil Water Notice which has been in place since 30 July, 2019 remains in place for approximately 600 customers in Tallanstown village.

The Boil Water Notice remains in place in the areas highlighted red in the map provided, including the following locations; Chestnut Grove; Castle View; Rathbrist Cottages; Glyde Road; Tallansfield Manor; Glyde View and Tullarsfield. Irish Water’s drinking water and operational experts will continue to work with Louth County Council on the issue and will consult with the Health Service Executive to lift the Boil Water Notice for those remaining on the notice

as quickly and as safely as possible.

The Boil Water Notice was put in place for the entire public water supply as a precautionary measure following issues with the treatment process which impacted on the disinfection process at the Water Treatment Plant.

This led to inadequate chlorination of the public water supply.

Irish Water, in partnership with Louth County Council, has carried out works at the plant which has made it possible for the Boil Water Notice to be lifted for the majority of impacted customers.

Following extensive monitoring of the plant and network Irish Water can confirm that adequate chlorine levels are being maintained consistently at all locations with the exception of a specific section of the network due to a cast iron section of the watermain. It is necessary that chlorine is present at adequate levels in drinking water to ensure that the water remains disinfected until it gets to the taps in people’s homes and businesses.

A programme of ice-pigging is needed to ensure adequate levels of chlorine can be maintained

in that particular section of the watermain. This work will be undertaken in the coming weeks.

Ice pigging is a process in which an ice slush is pumped into a water main and forced along the inside to clean the pipe by removing sediment and other unwanted deposits.

Irish Water acknowledges the impact and inconvenience caused by this Boil Water Notice to homes and businesses in the Tallanstown area. We wish to thank the community for their ongoing patience and cooperation while we work to resolve this issue for those remaining on the Boil Water Notice. Irish Water’s priority is the provision of safe, clean drinking water and safeguarding that water supply for the future is a vital focus.

The company is contacting all registered vulnerable customers who continue to be affected by the Boil Water Notice. Irish Water and Louth County Council will be providing a copy of the notice directly to properties remaining on a Boil Water Notice. Students celebrate All-Ireland victory Dundalk Leader 9th October 2019

Coláiste Chú Chulainn celebrated with Ms Shannen McLaughlin when she shared her All Ireland Football victory with her students.

Following Louth’s victory over Fermanagh at Croke Park, Principal Thomas Sharkey congratulated the teacher.

“We are all very proud of Ms McLaughlin. Shannen is an exceptional teacher and role model. Students look up to her. It was a proud moment for us when she took the team’s cup to school this week.

“There is great competition in our PE department. Mr Declan Byrne captained St Mochtas last year in their county championship. Mr Conall McKeever, Ms Shannen McLaiughlin and Mr Declan Byrne play on Louth’s County teams.

“Our school was built on the original County Grounds site here in the Marshes area. We intend to be the home of athletic greatness for many years to come,” he added.

Gerry Adams raises Sruthán House in the Dáil Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams today raised the future of Sruthán House in the Dáil with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar last week.

The Louth TD reminded the Dail that in February, the Minister of State with responsibility for

disability issues, Deputy Finian McGrath, stated that the Government was committed to providing a range of accessible respite care supports for people with a disability and their families.

“He also stated that respite care was crucial in

helping to reduce family stress, preserve the family unit and provide stability.

In direct contradiction of those words, the HSE unilaterally decided to close Sruthán House, a respite facility in Dundalk,” stated Deputy Adams.

“I have met the users

of this facility. They and their families feel very strongly about this closure and I support them.

Will the Taoiseach ask the Minister of State, Deputy McGrath, to ensure that Sruthán House is protected and that the excellent service it provides will

continue?”, he added.

In his response the Taoiseach said that an extra €10 million was provided in the budget for this year to provide additional respite care which is so important for families and carers. It allowed an additional respite house to be

Blackrock Tidy Towns is very pleased for the village with the recent awards in the National Tidy Towns competition. To achieve the national award in our category, Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town, was a huge honour. Even though we have been working toward this for twenty six years it still came as a surprise on the day, as competition at this level is fierce and we were up against previous national winners like Listowel and Clonakilty.

Red carpet out for the LMETB Leaving Cert awards The Annual LMETB presentation of Awards for outstanding achievement in Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied Examinations 2018 and 2019 took place in the City North Hotel, Gormanstown, Co. Meath on Friday 20 September 2019. Former LMETB students, their parents/guardians, former Principals, Deputies, teachers and their extended family and friends were all on hand to celebrate.

Opening the ceremony, Ms. Fiona Kindlon, Director of Schools, LMETB

welcomed all and stated that “this awards evening is a very special occasion for everyone present as we are reflecting on, celebrating and acknowledging the successes and achievements of our students and also thanking our school leaders and their teams of teaching staff for the role they have played in assisting, guiding and directing our award winners here this evening to move to the next phase of their education career or to enter into the world of work.” Ms. Kindlon also addressed the award win-

ners stating that “You symbolise everything we aim to do in LMETB around educating people to very high standards. You are role models and ambassadors for LMETB. Vital role of FASN is highlighted

The organisation which helps families whose loved ones are in addiction held a briefing for elected members from the North East at their facility in Dundalk on Monday.

The Family Addiction Support Network (FASN) organised the event in order to raise awareness about the vital role they play in communities in Louth, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan and urged politicians to help put the group on a sustainable footing by lobbying for core funding.

The newly-appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Armagh, Michael Router, who, earlier this summer, used his first public speech to highlight the damage being caused by drugs in general and the ongoing feud in Drogheda in particular, attended the event at the group’s Dundalk base at Lios Dubh.

by Gwen and Jackie McKenna in 2002, carry out in communities in the North East and how funding was now urgently needed to ensure its continuation and growth.

Jackie told politicians about how the

group relies on piecemeal funding and fundraising efforts by volunteers. The service they run, which includes peer-led groups, counselling, training for family members who wish to become facilitators, reflects best practice in the area of family support and fits with the United Nations’ global sustainability goals.

In addition, because FASN is communitybased and peer-led, it ensures that for every euro of funding in-

vested, there is a measurable social return of more than five euro.

Jackie asked elected representatives to highlight the work of FASN at every opportunity, in Leinster House and in council chambers in the North East and to help the group secure core State funding to ensure its future is sustainable.

Former councillor and FASN board member, Mark Dearey, said politicians should not worry about lending their name to the organisation’s funding campaign. He said it is extremely professionally run and governed by a board where families affected by addiction have a central role.

Perhaps the most poignant and moving part of the event was a panel discussion, hosted by Dundalk FM’s Pat Byrne. Politicians heard from a mum whose daughter battled addiction and how FASN had played a massive role in helping her deal with her child’s addiction.

A young woman also spoke frankly about her partner’s addiction and how FASN, after just a few months, was already making a huge difference to her ability to cope with it.

Speaking after the event, Jackie said: “We were really pleased with the reaction from those who attended this morning and we were happy to have the opportunity to bring them to our centre and let them hear, first hand from our families, how important the work that we do is.

“We hope the politicians will use their influence to raise our case in Leinster House, and in every other forum, to ensure that core funding is forthcoming for FASN”, she stated.

Three black belts awarded in Cobra Kan

Three members of the local Cobra Kan club, Gerard Conlon, Christopher Lennon and Peter Lambe Fagan are celebrating after a memorable night saw them graded to their First Dan black belt.

All three students of Cobra Kan have trained under the Chief instructor Patricia McQuillan for over 10 years. They’ve trained hard coming up the ranks over those years and Friday night was the pinnacle in their martial arts career as they were presented with certificates and the all-important black belt by Patricia.

All three students have graced the international stage, earning themselves world medals for sparring and most recently Gerard Conlon became double world champion at the 2018 World kickboxing and

karate championship. These men have years of experience and it was time for them to take their biggest test yet.

Grading to their black belt was no easy feat as they had to overcome many obstacle to prove they were ready to become a black belt with a tough syllabus to cover. Friday night in St Gerard’s hall, surrounded by family, friends and club members; they left their heart and soul on the mats.

It’s no cliche to say that it took blood sweat and tears to grade to their black belt. However, they pushed through and to a thunderous applause from their audience, they were awarded their black belt.

All of Cobra Kan are so proud of them. They are true and genuine martial artists and someone for our younger members to look up to and learn from.

Championship joy for Roche Music and comedy Emmets and Mattock Rangers

Roche Emmets and Mattock Rangers are the latest Louth clubs to celebrate championship success after they came out on top in their respective finals over the weekend.

The Junior Championship Final replay at The Grove on Saturday evening saw Roche make no mistake at the second attempt after being denied victory by a last-gasp equalising goal on the previous Sunday.

In a game played in very wet conditions, the Emmets came out on top against Glyde Rangers on a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-10.

The replay proved to be another close affair but an early goal from Shane Byrne settled the nerves of the Faughart Parish side as they went on to lead by 1-5 to 0-6 at the the interval.

Glyde kicked three points to take the lead early in the second half but Roche regained control when Dan O’Connell added their second goal.

The Collon men were among the favourites for the title since dropping down to Intermediate four years ago but they finally got their reward thanks to a commanding performance in the final.

was a flying start from Mattock as an early goal from Ryan Leneghan saw them build up a seven-point advantage before Kilkerley got off the mark through Tadhg McEneaney.

At the interval, the Collon outfit were in a strong position with a 1-8 to 0-6 lead.

to get back into the game in the second half but with David Reid in fine scoring form, Mattock were always in command and ran out winners by eight points.

Football League story at museum

At 7.30pm on Thursday October 17 the County Museum, Dundalk will host a reminiscences session looking at the indoor football leagues of the 1960s which started in the north-east and spread to venues throughout Ireland.

According to Museum Curator, Brian Walsh, indoor football was very popular with GAA players, who managed to avoid the ban on foreign sports as it was seen as entertainment and not soccer. Women were encouraged to play indoor football and this was the start of the contemporary women’s soccer and Gaelic football.

“This took place during a time of social change in Ireland with the game becoming one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the late 1960s with teams travelling long distances to compete and huge crowds gathering to view the matches.

We’re working with Helena Byrne from Drogheda Local

Voices to record and hopefully develop an exhibition around this league,” explained Brian.

Helena Byrne, from Drogheda Local Voices, first documented the history of the Abbey Ballroom Indoor Football Leagues.

Recently she has uncovered information about similar competitions that ran in the Adelphi Ballroom in Dundalk as part of the Maytime Festival, the Embassy Ballroom in Castleblayney, the Skating Rink in Blackrock and the Parochial Hall in Inniskeen.

According to Helena, this is an aspect of the county’s history that is as yet unwritten.

“Thursday’s event will hopefully be of interest to people who either, played or attended those competitions. We’d love if they could come along to the event and share their stories.

You have teams like The Casuals from Dundalk who dominated the women’s competitions in Drogheda, but we’d like to know

“In the men’s competition, the Beatlers from Inniskeen were reported to have been the only team with a supporters club, there is such social side to this story that has to be recorded.”

Mr. Walsh, agreed saying that at this time Irish society is just about to change.

“This is the time of the ban on foreign games, the role of women is being questioned, people’s social lives are changing in so many different ways and the football leagues are highlighting the transformation that is about to come.

“We’d welcome people to join in on Thursday October 17 next to share their memories, photos and memorabilia. No matter how long or short we would like to hear all your stories”, he stated.

Housing list in Louth soars as council land banks lie empty – Imelda Munster

Louth TD Imelda Munster has hit out at the latest homelessness figures, saying that ‘the figures released for August show how the government has failed to get to grips with the causes of homelessness’.

Ms Munster’s comments come as the Department of Housing released the official homeless figures for August which show 10,338 people living in emer-

gency accommodation, 170 of whom are in Louth.

The Sinn Féin TD said: ‘The figures published this morning show an unacceptable number of people who are homeless in Louth.

‘The figures show that child and family homelessness is on the increase across the state. For the seventh month in a row the number of people officially clas-

sified as homeless across this state has remained above 10,000 with a total of 10,338.

‘There are over 50 acres of council owned land banks in Louth which are still lying barren of any social and affordable housing, all because the government has refused to roll out the funding to build hundreds of homes on this land to help ease the crisis.

‘The government has already collated the data around land banks across the state and they know exactly where they are.

‘The housing waiting list in Louth is heading towards the 5,000 mark – the highest it has ever been. Yet these land banks lie idle.

‘It’s high time, if the government is serious about even making a dent in the housing waiting

list that they fund the roll out of an affordable and social housing building programme on these council-owned land banks.

‘Sinn Féin has called for an increase in investment in social and affordable homes built on public land and faster delivery time for these homes.

‘We are calling on both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to drop their opposition to the Focus

Ireland amendment as this is the best way to keep families from becoming homeless as it restricts the landlord’s ability to seek vacant possession notices to quit.

‘I have been pleading with the government to change their policy and prioritise social and affordable housing to give these people and families a chance at a stable, normal life’.

Comhaltas Concert Tour of Ireland

Macalla na hÉireann Comhaltas Concert Tour of Ireland 2019 will be held at 14 venues throughout the country, from the 6th to the 19th October and will showcase the best of traditional talent drawn from all four Provinces of Ireland.

Fundraiser for Birches

Volunteer Ireland have extended the deadline to nominate a volunteer, group of volunteers or volunteer manager for their national awards to this Thursday, October 10.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of local communities and in Dundalk it is the volunteers who hold it together – whether that is lifesaving organisations such as the Civil Defence or those who make a huge difference to the lives of people in the area such as Cara Cancer Support Centre, SOSAD, SVP and the many, many other voluntary organisations. Indeed, who could forget the hundreds of volunteers that make events such as St Patrick’s Day and Frostival happen?

Raffle in aid of SOSAD

To mark their first anniversary in business Sailor Sharkey Barbers on the Castletown Road will be holding a raffle throughout the month of October in aid of SOSAD Dundalk.

Over €300 worth of prizes from American Crew, Prizefight Whiskey, Frank Man and Schwarzkopf are included in a specially put together hamper which also includes a hot towel facial steam voucher for Sailor Sharkey Barbers. All customers are invited to buy a raffle ticket - costing €2 each or three for €5 - throughout the month of October when visiting Sailor Sharkey Barbers while all those who wish to enter the raffle and support this worthy cause are also invited to pop in at any stage to buy a ticket. All proceeds raised will go towards SOSAD Dundalk.

Craig Colgan of Sailor Sharkey Barbers said he wanted to give something back to celebrate his first year in business and felt SOSAD was an ideal partner.

“I’d love to get more men talking and opening up about their feelings as suicide is unfortunately one of the biggest killers in Ireland,” said Craig.

“Being a barber, you can see the benefits of men opening up and talking to you. While I’m here to provide a service in terms of a hair cut, it’s a real bonus when you see someone leave the shop in a better mental head space.

“That’s why it’s great to be able to raise some funds for SOSAD, who do such great work in this area.

“I’d encourage any man or woman who is feeling down about something to talk to someone, be that a professional, a friend, relative, colleague or even their barber or hairdresser. As the old saying goes, ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’ and certainly at Sailor Sharkey’s we are delighted to listen.”

SOSAD co-ordinator Hattie Billingham thanked Sailor Sharkey Barbers for their support. “It means a lot to the foundation,” she said.
