Mairead McGuinness confirmed as Ireland’s new EU Commissioner

The results from a Leaving Certificate like no other were made available to anxious students on Monday morning and in the main students did very well with grades on average 4.4% higher than last year. COVID-19 threw up many challenges for students across the land as they were unable to sit their exams as normal and this led to a new calculated grades process which is an estimated percentage mark provided by the pupil’s school.

Dundalk principals are cautiously optimistic about “very good” Leaving Certificate results achieved by local students.

Ardee native Mairead McGuinness has been confirmed as Ireland’s new EU commissioner. The news was announced

by European Commission Prsident Ursula von der Leyen yesterday morning.

Mairead will not be taking up the Trade portfolio which had been under the remit of previous EU Commisioner Phil Hogan and will instead take the Financial Services and Financial Stability and Capital Markets portfolio.

According to De La Salle Secondary School Principal Patricia O’Leary the results are “great” but the CAO points are also very important.

“Our students did very well.

We had a number of students who achieved 600 points. I hope that the results bring our students where they want to go,” she said.

“They are a great bunch of students and I wish them every success for the future.”

Around 60,000 students in the Leaving Certificate class of 2020 received results with grades higher than any other year on record.

The results of this year’s calculated grades process became available to students online on Monday last.

The Children’s Ombudsman Dr Niall Muldoon tweeted a message to the class of 2020.

“I hope you get what you wish for, however if not, re-

member there are still plenty of opportunities out there,” he said.

This year’s calculated grades process has produced grades that are, on average, 4.4% higher than those of last year, according to aggregate data published by the Department of Education.

Across Higher Level papers, the proportion of H1 grades awarded is up by 3% compared to last year, from 5.9% of the total to 8.9%.

At Ordinary Level, the number of O1 and O2 grades awarded has increased by 3.5%. CAO offers are due to be released this Friday while an appeals process opens next Monday (14th) where all students will be able to access their schools estimated mark.

Fine Gael councillor Colm Markey has been co-opted into Mairead’s European seat and he will now become an MEP. The Togher man was one of four potential candidates named for the role alongside Frank Feighan, Gab McFadden and Sharon Toal.

Repeat Leaving Certificate Programme The Repeat Leaving Certificate Programme at De La Salle College, Dundalk has had fantastic success over many years with most students increasing their points score in the Leaving Certificate Examination by between seventy and eighty-five points. Dundalk Institute of Technology President welcomes Funding Boost Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) have received circa €1 million in funding to provide enhanced facilities, supports and services to students in the year ahead. €871,000 was confirmed

by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD to support continued investment in capital works and equipment. An additional €118,000 was released by the Government to support students’ wellbeing and mental health for the academic year ahead.

In announcing the news about the capital grant, Minister Harris said: “It is essential that higher education institutions can reinvest in their existing estate, renew and update their equipment, and can make capital investments to respond to developments in online and blended learning. Ongoing capital investment is essential to ensuring a high quality academic environment and a positive campus experience for students and staff.

The devolved capital grant funding, which is provided through the Higher Education Authority, is part of a €25m package for higher education institutions to provide colleges with the flexibility to address small-scale capital investment and equipment including infrastructure upgrades, ICT, and equipment renewal, and energyrelated upgrades.

These concerns have been compounded by the isolation and uncertainly brought forward by the COVID-19 pandemic. For students, the college experience has been different this year from ever before. “Ongoing capital investment is essential to maintaining our high quality academic environment and providing a student-centred campus experience for our community. Funding will also be

used to invest in online teaching and learning supports as part of the suite of blended teaching and learning approaches offered to students in the year ahead.”

“I also welcome the increased funding for mental health and well-being which will be released by the HEA this year. We are cognizant that COVID-19 has brought about new challenges and strains for our student community, particularly in relation to mental health. New funding will allow us to build on existing capacity and invest in crucial student services such as student counselling and pastoral support. Our new operating plan for 2020/21 has prioritised student experience by reinforcing student health & wellbeing supports, providing a comprehensive first year induction and ensuring that all existing services continue to be made available to students via online and on-campus delivery.”

Free counselling service for carers of Louth’s estimated 1,600 stroke survivors A free counselling service has been launched aimed at providing coping skills and vital information to people who are caring for the estimated 1,600 stroke survivors living in Louth.

The Irish Heart Foundation has urged people to apply immediately for the six-week service which gives them the ability to look after themselves and the strength to deal effectively with their loved one’s care.

The free programme includes up to six, one-hour sessions giving participants an opportunity to share worries and frustra-

tions in a confidential manner and learn practical tools to help them cope as a carer.

“Becoming a carer for someone who has survived a stroke, is a huge undertaking physically, mentally and emotionally,” said Tracy Egan, Patient Support Manager, Irish Heart Foundation.

“When people are affected by stroke the new regime can be totally overwhelming for those caring for them.

“It is important that carers take care of their own mental and physical health so that they

can have a reasonable quality of life, provide the care their loved ones need and cope with the demands of life as a carer.”

Counselling has taken the weight off the shoulders of mother of two Carol Beirne as she learns to cope with life alongside a stroke survivor.

When Eamonn suffered a stroke eleven months ago, the roles were suddenly reversed for 65-year-old Carol who, for a time, had been cared for by her husband when she had mobility issues.

“The stroke left Eamonn with hidden disabilities. He has trouble processing his thoughts and some days, his speech is affected as he struggles to get the words out.

“Sometimes you want to finish his sentences but know not to as it’s very frustrating for him, especially when he’s talking to old colleagues who don’t

know that he had a stroke.

“I learned to handle Eamonn’s emotions and frustrations and got an insight and understanding on how he must be feeling.

“Every time I walked out of a session, I was walking on air.

A few years ago, Eamonn had cared for me when I had mobility issues and now I was all of a sudden helping him.

“The roles were completely reversed which was hard for both of us. I used to depend on him, but now we work as a team.

“The counselling has also given me the confidence to write, which I give myself time to do in the mornings and in turn, it gives Eamonn his space to get emotionally ready for the day.”

The free counselling supports are being made available to carers of people affected by stroke by the Irish Heart Foundation thanks to funding from the Dormant Accounts Fund.

Pubs require guidelines to prepare for eventual reopening—McGreehan

Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan says so called ‘wet’ pubs, bars, and nightclubs require guidelines to prepare for their eventual reopening.

“Small rural pubs have endured some of their most difficult months. While the necessary public health measures were introduced in March to slow the spread

of this deadly virus, I believe we need to start preparations for the reopening of these establishments.

“The local pubs in rural Ireland are an integral fabric of Irish society. It is positive that guidelines for their reopening are currently being worked on. I have no doubt the public health teams and Government are examining bars and pubs in some parts of Europe which have reopened successfully.

€277,030 for organisations in Louth from the third tranche of COVID-19 Stability Fund Some seven organisations across Louth are to benefit from €277,030 worth of funding under the third tranche of the Government’s Covid-19 Stability Fund, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

organisations, charities and social enterprises that are experiencing financial difficulties as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“EU and Irish government must hold firm” —O’Mhurchú The prospect of a hard border near Dundalk was raised again at the weekend, as a consequence of a reported British government strategy that could override elements of the Irish Protocol.

Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú, who was recently appointed by his party to the Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs, said the Financial Times report, which suggests the British government will this week introduce legislation to ‘circumvent’ part of the protocol, is ‘worrying in the extreme, particularly for border communities’.

He said it was difficult to overstate the damage that could be done to the future of the all-island economy and society.

The Dundalk TD said: ‘The Irish Protocol has been painstakingly negotiated and agreed over many months.

Now, in what is either a show of bravado at least or an utter betrayal of a signed agreement,

the British government is staring at the EU and daring us to blink.

‘This week sees the start of the eighth round of negotiations between the EU and the British government. Whether it’s a negotiating strategy or a serious proposal, it shows extremely bad faith on the part of the British that they are prepared to change some of the protocol in order to suit themselves’.

The deputy said the EU and the Irish government ‘must hold firm, must not blink’, despite the huge pressure being exerted by the British on them.

He said: ‘Whether it’s Boris Johnson’s deadline of October 15 or the EU’s deadline of October 31, businesses and communities along the border know that they could be dealing, by the end of next month, with the prospect of a hard border happening in January 2021.

The head of the Vintners’ Federation in Louth has welcomed the news that pubs are to re-open on the 21st of September but warned the government that much more needs to be done to ensure livelihoods aren’t lost.

“We were kind of taking aback by the government’s complete uturn on this issue and we are not really sure what brought it about.

Was it our lobbying? Public pres-

sure? We just don’t know. We are obviously very happy with the decision but there are still a myriad of issues that have to be dealt with by the government. The fact that customers can’t sit at the bar is a huge issue for many of the smaller pubs and I know that a lot of these pubs simply won’t be able to re-open under these new guidelines.

“We have been fighting tooth

and nail for our pubs since March and to be honest we have been virtually ignored. We haven’t been invited to the table by government and we’ve had to send emails, letters and almost harrass our local councillors to get our voices heard. There is no point in being a keyboard warrior and sniping from the sidelines you have to fight for what you believe in and we will continue to do so.

The top up to the restart grant offered by the government were nothing short of derisory and a lot more needs to be done to help an industry which is huge trouble. But as I said before the first thing is to re-open the pubs and then we can continue the fight.

We are not being glib about the pandemic and we realise we have a role to play as well to keep everybody safe but we need help and

it has to come soon.

“These one-size fits all guidelines will not work for everybody as we all come in different shapes and sizes. We are happy that the people are behind us and we look forward to being a part of the community once again but as I said there is still a lot of work needed to do by the government to ensure pubs get through this crisis,” stated Collette.

Dundalk man in critical Disappointment over no plans to open condition after punch a Driving License Service in Dundalk

A Dundalk man is in a critical condition after suffering a serious head injury in a one-punch confrontation at a property in Dublin.

Jason Kearney, aged 49, suffered a serious head injury in the incident after the homeowner was woken by a noise outside his home at around 2.50am.

The homeowner rang an ambulance after the one-punch incident with a man he believed was trying to break into his property.

The incident took place at a flat on Seville Place in Dublin’s north inner

city in the early hours of Wednesday last. Mr Kearney is being treated in the Mater Hospital. His condition has been described as critical by gardai.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to the incident and for anyone with information to come forward.

Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who were travelling in the area at the time and who may have dash-cam or camera footage to make this available.

Fianna Fail councillor Sean Kelly has expressed his disappointment upon hearing the news that there are no plans to open a driving license service in Dundalk.

Dundalk Municipal District were informed by letter on Tuesday that there are no current plans to make it possible to apply for a driving license at the RSA offices on the Newry Road. This was on foot of a motion by Councillor Kelly calling for

this at the February council meeting. The National Driving License Centre for Louth is currently placed in Meath at Southgate Shopping Centre, south of Drogheda. Kelly has suggested opening a part time office in Dundalk but this was ruled out as the application system is moving online in the coming months.

Cllr Kelly commented ‘There is still going to be a small minority of people

who aren’t tech savvy or elderly who still drive who won’t be able to apply online. They are the ones who will have to drive to Southgate in Drogheda which makes no sense whatsoever.

We’re letting the able bodied people who are well fit to make the journey to Southgate sit at home and do the process online but the elderly and non tech savvy who don’t have access or don’t know how to use the

online application, we’re making them make the trip.

Where is common sense?

There is a state-of-the-art office out there on Newry Road. Why can’t there be something there one day a week to deal with the elderly and other people that can’t make the trip. If the application goes online over the next couple of months, why can’t they even do it on a temporary basis? It’s not asking much.’’

Cuchulainn CC host Louth Hill Climb Championships

Competitive action returned to Dundalk after a long Covid induced break on Thursday last, when Cuchulainn CC hosted the Louth Hill Climb Championships.

The championships were held on Jenkinstown Hill, which is 1.7km long, with an average gradient of 8% and has 136m of elevation gain.

The biggest surprise of the night was when under 14 rider Rhiannon Dolan of Cuchulainn CC won the ladies event in a time of 7min 38seconds. She had 8 seconds to spare over local triathlete Lorraine Dunne with Johanna Rogan of Ardee Cycling Club taking the bronze medal. This was a very impressive result from the underage rider, who has excellent lineage with both her grandfather & father having raced in the Irish jersey in their day.

Thomas McCabe winning outright from local Jenkinstown resident Nathan McGreehan by 11 seconds. Thomas has been a past winner of the Louth Champs on a number of occa-

sions. It was another underage rider in 3rd place with Conor Murphy, just 2seconds off the silver. Murphy has won All Ireland titles both on and off road, so is another to watch for

the future.

Paul supports proposals which will help arts return

An Tain Arts Centre Director Paul Hayes has welcomed the news that the Government is considering a ban on alcohol at music events and gigs as a way of allowing them to resume during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Government is currently considering new proposals that would increase the numbers of

people permitted at events, including a potential ban on alcohol being served on the premises, according to the Irish Times.

“I fully support any proposal that will get the arts back. It won’t do anything for the arts centre,” said Paul.

“I think the proposal is aimed more at venues such as the Spirit Store in Dundalk. For venues like that it could work.

“It’s up to the audience to decide if they want to sit at a table with four people and not drink alcohol.”

Current Covid-19 restrictions permit a maximum of 50 people indoors in “controlled environments” such as museums, cinemas, theatres and art galleries, while all other indoor events have a six-person limit.

Martin and Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly met arts campaigners on Monday last to discuss which facilities and events could be allowed to reopen under public health guidelines.

“We have no plans to open a bar at the arts centre for a long time. All events will run without an interval and without a bar and with social distancing,” said Paul.

Kelly raises concerns about deplorable condition of weeds and overgrowth on footpaths across Dundalk

On Tuesday evening at Dundalk’s MD Council meeting Cllr Seán Kelly asked Council officials what was the situation regarding weeding and overgrowth on footpaths across Dundalk.

This was an issue that was raised consistently last year and Councillors were told at that point that it wouldn’t occur again yet it seems to be even worse this year.

Cllr Kelly commented ‘This afternoon I shared some photographs of the conditions of footpaths in the Culhane St, Philip St and Ice House Hill areas of Dundalk. They speak for themselves.

They are in a deplorable state and residents are rightly complaining.

It is not the case we can blame

this on Covid and less maintenance staff being out on the ground as the situation was the same last year. The issues I want the Council to address are 1) do we have a schedule and plan to correct this and if so can that be shared with Councillors, 2) is this work completed by Council staff directly or contractors and if so

by Contractors where are they and how much are we paying them and finally 3) if it is Council staff directly, have we lost a considerable amount of staff that this workload is now too much?

Council officials present at the meeting promised to get to the bottom of this problem and issue a comprehensive response before Weeds and overgrowth on footpaths around Dundalk. the end of the week.

New figures for plastic waste in Co. Louth

A new study has found households in Louth produce 7,800 tonnes of single-use plastic waste every year.

The study by CUSP has also found that households in Louth would have to reduce their plastic consumption by one kilo per month to meet the UN’s targets for 2030.

Over 19,000 tonnes of singleuse plastic waste is generated by households across Louth and Meath.

The CUSP study shows households in Meath produce 11,300 tonnes of waste every year, while

households in Louth account for 7,800 tonnes.

Both figures combined is the equivalent of filling over 420 Olympic-sized swimming pools with plastic.

The firm from the midlands says in order for both counties to meet the UN goal of a 70% reduction in single-use plastic packaging by 2030, local households would have to drop their consumption by just 1kg per month.

CUSP is inviting members of the public to download their free app to calculate how they can reduce their packaging waste.

Artists assemble! (Again) —A call to keep connecting

Our April to August OFF SITE programme was so successful we have decided to continue it.

With the current restrictions on social distancing set to be with us for some time, our next programme at An Táin Arts Centre will be a mix of in-house live work and off-site work.

We have a wealth of local talented performers, artists, musicians, and creators who we will connect with the wider community.

We want to hear your ideas.

We had great success in our last programme with temporary public art installations, commis-

sioned and published writing in local newspapers, online music events, book clubs, streaming films, online exhibitions… we want to do more of these and new brave ideas that we haven’t even thought of yet.

We have reallocated our budgets to create this new strand, both for the remainder of the year and into next year. You don’t need to send complete programmes, just ideas for now - we can feed into them, and maybe even partner you with other artists.

Dundalk Chamber Skillnet and DkIT launch new programme to support businesses recovery post lockdown

Dundalk Chamber Skillnet and DkIT have joined forces to offer a “Business ReVive” programme to support businesses recovery post lockdown.

The programme provides 70% funding to local enterprise to support conversion training on key skills identified as critical to long-term business recovery.

The “Business ReVive” programme is due to commence in late September and the programmes include: Cert in Lean Six Sigma QQI Level 7; Cert in Management QQI Level 6; Digital Marketing.

Dundalk Chamber Network Manager, Aidan Callan stated we are delighted to have partnered with DKIT on this initiative, as the

centre of learning in the North East, DKIT will play a key role in the recovery of the region.

We’re particularly keen to support businesses who’ve availed of the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme, Louth ranks highly on the number of subscriptions to the scheme leaving a significant number of jobs at risk.

The Business Revive programme is designed to make the training more affordable and accessible with a focus on enabling participating businesses to make better business decisions, reduce costs and increase competitiveness along with the opportunity to drive sales through a defined Digital Marketing strategy.

During difficult trading periods, training is typically the first cost to be cut, the “Business ReVive” programme ensures access to critical skills but with heavy subsidies making the training much more accessible.

Highlighting the Six Sigma programme, Thomas advised that process Improvement mixed with technology and innovation are key to survival in tough times. Implementing Six Sigma principles drive efficiencies, improve quality while increasing competi-

tiveness and profitability. All key elements to surviving this difficult period.

Aidan Browne, Head of Innovation & Business Development at DkIT commented “Interconnectivity and collaboration across industry and with progressive industry support organisations are at the heart of the DkIT engagement strategy. This initiative is a welcome commitment and a well-timed collaboration by both organisations that will see enhancement of the capability and capacity for participant companies to develop fundamental skills within their workforce across key operational excellence areas.”
