THE row involving Traveller families previously based at Woodland Park continues to rumble on after representatives strongly denied claims made in a statement released

by Louth County Council.

In January, 23 Traveller families had been moved from the halting site in Woodland Park due to fears over safety and sanitation issues. A spokesperson for those families has reacted to a number of claims in relation to their behaviour made in the County Council statement released on Friday.

The statement revealed that it has honoured all aspects of the agreement reached with Traveller representatives on January 15 before claiming See Page 7

St Marys students win top award

THERE was great excitement among the Transition Year students in St Mary’s College this week.

One of their mini-companies, UpCycle-Me, won a prestigious National School Entrepreneurship Award, run by the charity Make a Wish Foundation. They were one of only three schools in the country to do so. The Make a Wish charity aims to make the dreams of terminally ill children come true. They receive no Government funding.

The Transition Year students attended the awards ceremony in Dublin recently. The Students from St. Mary's College, Dundalk with Nora Casey at the ‘Kids for ceremony was hosted by Wish Kids’ awards, pictured with their award for excellence in ‘Marketing Full Story on Page 7 and Communications’ for their UPCYCLE Trade Fair fundraiser.

Fresh doubts emerge over Greenore ferry

A spokesperson for the Greencastle Area Residents Group (GARG) has strongly rejected claims by Frazer Ferries director Paul O’Sullivan that the Greenore-Greencastle ferry will be up and

running by the summer time.

Speaking last month Paul O’Sullivan insisted that the ferry would be up and running sooner rather than later with the company needing to iron out a couple of minor issues with the local councils and planning

authorities.

“We had hoped to be up and running by Easter but there are some minor changes to our original proposals that need to be amended. One is simply just a typographical error in the planning permission document. We are also seeking to amend road specification drawings previously approved

by Newry, Mourne & Down Council.

“We are confident that these issues will be sorted out over the next couple of weeks and we fully intend to be up and running by summer. We are excited that we are

almost ready to go and we are ready and waiting to get started once we get the go ahead from the relevant authorities.

The decision to set up a ferry between Greencastle and Greenore has been vigorously opposed by locals who set up the Greencastle Area Residents group (GARG) to try and stop the project getting off the ground. Speaking on Monday a spokesperson for GARG claimed there wasn’t a chance that the ferry would be up and running due to a number of conditions which have yet to be

met by Frazer Ferries.

“The proposal is riddled with flaws and despite the fact Frazer Ferries have been handed a set of 25 conditions by Newry Down and Mourne council the applicant has still only submitted a small number of these. One of the main stumbling blocks for Paul O’Sullivan and his people is the width of Greencastle Pier Road.

It simply isn’t wide enough and they are not allowed to cut back boundaries without permission from landowners which is not being given to them.

“I cannot see how they think they are close to getting this project of the ground. There are still so many roadblocks they have to negotiate and we here in Greencastle will continue to make sure they do not get this ferry service off the ground. I’ve been fighting this since 1996 and I’m worn out by the whole thing to be honest but we will keep fighting to restore the natural beauty of Greencastle and make sure we protect our wildlife and character of our area.

Seachtain na Gaeilge was celebrated in style by teachers and pupils in Scoil Realt Na Mara last week as all classes embraced our national language through music, song, drama, dance and other fun activities.

There was also a new initiative introduced by Irish teacher Sile Ui Chiaráin who invited parents and people from the local community down to the school for a coffee morning to help promote our national language in a fun and relaxed environment.

They were treated to song and dance as pupils from the school along with Bn Sile Ui Chiaráin performed a couple of songs as Gaeilge.

According to Sile Seachtain na Gaeilge is a very important part of the school year in Realt na Mara and this year it has been extended to two weeks due to the amount of activities planned for the children.

“The Irish language is very important to us here in Realt na Mara and we’ve had plenty going on all week as we celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge,” explained Sile.

“Each day pupils are encouraged to speak Irish and the cúpla focail can be heard throughout the school each day with pupils getting into the spirit of things. We’ve had Tráth na gCeist, history workshops, a Feis as well as the parent’s morning here today. I think it’s very important that we

keep our language alive and make sure we teach the children in a fun and informative way so that they learn to love the language and not resent it.

Nexus F1 from Dundalk Grammar School are delighted to see their hard work in preparing for the regional finals has paid off as they have managed to qualify for the national finals in the RDS on April 28.

The F1 in schools competition is an international event involving teams from 33 different countries, around the world. It involves building a miniature F1 car, powered by CO2. Nexus are Dundalk Grammar School’s only team this year which puts a lot of pressure on their shoulders.

There was some positive feedback regarding the abandoned Ard Dealgan Complex on Quay Street at yesterday’s Dundalk Municipal District Council meeting.

Sinn Féin Councillor Jennifer Green who has been to the forefront of a campaign to deal with the issue had put forward two ‘Notice of Questions’ asking for an update on the situation.

Afterwards Cllr Green revealed that there have been several fires at the complex, the latest being last Friday evening and someone is going to be hurt or worse.

“There are people living illegally in the complex and creating a nuisance to the residents around the Quay area. This issue is not going away and we will not be ignored.

“I have now been told by the council that the Ard Dealgan issue is now a ‘priority’ and that the council has had discussions with a number of approved housing bodies in relation to a redevelopment solution”, she explained.

Cllr Green pointed out that the council has also highlighted the site to the Department of Environment as a site that should be re-developed.

Discussions are continuing in this regard and when these matters are concluded the members will be advised.

“While I give a cautious welcome to this news, what worries me is that there is no time frame in place. Every summer we have problems with fires and at one stage there was a barbeque held on the roof of the complex. The residents have had enough and this matter needs to be resolved as soon as possible. I will continue to keep the pressure on the Council”, she added.

Parade is heading towards record entry

Doesn’t understand ‘disqualified’ A MAN who was told he doesn’t understand the meaning of the word disqualified was given the chance to avoid a prison term after his case was put back for a Community Service Report.

Oliver Byrne of Strandfield House claimed he was only a passenger in a car and that his brother was driving after being observed by Gardai. However, he was found guilty of driving without insurance or a licence when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. He was warned by Judge Flann Brennan not to drive or he would serve a sentence.

“Oliver Byrne’s problem is that he doesn’t understand the meaning of the word disqualified. He has contempt for the road traffic laws and the only way to deal with that is to impose a sentence”, added the judge who said he would consider 120 hours in lieu of four months as he put the case back to March 23.

“He is disqualified anyway and he must not drive. If he does, he can forget about Community Service”, warned Judge Brennan.

The court heard that the defendant was observed at Carrickaneena on February 27 2014. Gardai identified Mr

Byrne as the driver before he crossed the border. On a later date they encountered the defendant and made a demand to produce his documents, while he failed to do.

The defence barrister successfully argued that charges of failing to produce documents should be struck out because it contained the incorrect date.

The defendant’s brother, Colin, gave evidence that he was driving the car on the date in question and denied that he was lying.

However, Judge Brennan stated he was satisfied by the prosecution evidence in the case.

“I have heard the submissions and evidence and I have no doubt in this matter. I am convinced by the evidence of the prosecuting Gardai”, he stated in convicting the defendant.

The court heard that the defendant had 24 previous convictions including drink driving and dangerous driving, while he had been disqualified for six years.

Defence barrister acknowledged that his 25-year-old client client had a lamentable road traffic record and accepts that he was disqualified at the time.

Speaking on Tuesday, Woodland Park resident and spokesperson Rebecca Quinn strongly denied the claims made by Louth County Council branding them as ‘absolutely ridic-

ulous’.

“We have read the statement released by Louth County Council and we find much of it absolutely ridiculous. We have sent Louth County Council a letter asking them for proof. We will release a full statement tomorrow (Wednesday) outlining our issues with the statement. However, this is a legal matter and it needs to be treated as such. We do not plan on having a public war of words with the council going back and forth with claims and counterclaims. We are meeting

with our legal team in Dublin this week and we will decide where we go next from there” stated Rebecca.

Louth County Council stated that they have already spent €100,000 cleaning up the site and they plan to spend a further €250,000 to refurbish the site “The Local Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee has endorsed the refurbishment proposal, which will cost a further €250,000, and has also approved the commencement of a review of the

Traveller Accommodation Programme to support this proposal.

“As part of this review, all Traveller households in County Louth will be interviewed over the coming weeks with regard to their accommodation needs.

“This will result in the development of a detailed accommodation programme to address all identified need. Any amendment arising from the review will go before the elected members of Louth County Council for approval.” concluded the statement.

This group of socially aware Transition Year students established their mini –company UpCycle –Me in September 2016.

They didn’t envisage the road to success they were about to venture down.

Their empathy for the environment and the well-being of our community members inspired the students to pursue a number of different avenues.

Firstly the company, after a thorough brainstorming and a feasibility study, decided to develop and produce garden ornaments with a sensory aspect from completely recyclable materials.

Such products included Wind Shakers, Decorative jars, Angels

Their interest and enthusiasm flourished, which led the students to work closely with the Maria Goretti Respite Centre for children in Lordship.

This project saw the students help design and create a sensory garden for the Centre, featuring giant minions, caterpillars and ladybirds made from recycled tyres.

The students embraced this challenge and identified a further product idea in the form of sensory boards.

These are visual boards that predominantly aim to arouse the

The boards are made from various materials, images and functions.

The aim is to teach students some important skills such as fastening buttons, zipping a garment, tying a shoe lace and locking/unlocking a door. They are also filled with attractive images, smells and textures.

The students in their development of these boards decided to donate them to the various schools in the locality on their completion.

There was good news for local filmmaker Alan Markey this week as one of his short films was selected for broadcast by RTE on Monday evening.

Alan, who hails from Dowdallshill submitted his debut short film ‘Fat Freddie’s Drop’ into the national broadcaster and it was selected to air on Monday last (March 7th) as part of RTE’s ‘Short Screen’ season. Alan began his creative career as a musician, playing with a wide range of bands and professional music groups. This introduced him to the concept of the creative collaborative workflow from an early age: writing; arranging; performing; recording; touring, promoting. It was during early music video shoots that he started to develop a growing interest in filmmaking.

Just last week one of RTE’s short films from last season ‘Stutterer’ picked up an Oscar for ‘Best Short Film’ and Alan is delighted that his debut film will get the chance to be seen by a wider audience.

“It’s great news for everybody involved in the film that RTE agreed to screen it and we’re delighted that it will be exposed to a wider audience. I had been working on a number of scripts and various ideas for my debut film but none of them really worked.

“Eventually I came up with an idea which revolved around the question ‘Would you kill your pet if it meant you were accepted into a group of friends or a gang?’. I worked around this idea and it eventu-

ally turned into ‘Fat Freddie’s Drop’. It’s basically about a teenager who moves to a new estate who faces a tough choice if he wants to be accepted by the local gang - kill his pet goldfish in front of everyone or else be barred from the street for life,” explains Alan.

“Because I’m from Dundalk it was important for me to film all the outdoor scenes in Dundalk and capture the look of the streets where I myself played football as a kid. Although I’m

from Dowdallshill I often played football in the streets of Ashbrook when I was young. We went to film in Mountain Court which has a very similar look to Ashbrook and I want to thank the Residents Association up there for putting up with us for two days.

“We actually finished shooting this film two years ago but because the film industry can be very slow and also because we had just finished a bit late to be eligible for festival season we held it back a bit and it was released last year and entered into Galway Film Festival where it was very well received.

“There is also a local presence on screen with Dundalk man Peter Johnson starring in the film along with his son Luca and friend Ciaran.

We’re all delighted with how the film turned out and hopefully anybody who catches it on RTE will enjoy it too,” concluded Alan.

Students from St Vincent’s Secondary School in Dundalk played the part of Ireland while St Louis Secondry school played the role of Lithuania at the 9th Model EU Council in Dublin today. The topic was EU migration policy.

Secondary school students from around Ireland confronted Europe’s number one challenge, as they role-played being the Council of the European Un-

ion in Dublin Castle on Tuesday 1st March.

They debatee the EU’s response to the largest flood of refugees since the Second World War at the ninth annual Model Council of the European Union.

Each of the twenty-eight schools took the part of a different EU Member State in what was an intense and well-informed discussion.

Junk Kouture at St Vincent’s

St.Vincent’s Art students have been strutting their stuff on the catwalk this week as three successful teams made it through to the hugely popular Junk Kouture fashion competition.

This is the fifth consecutive year that teams from the school have competed in the national

event which sees creativity, fashion and environmental awareness combined to showcase wearable designs made from predominantly recycled materials.

The Eastern Regional final took place on Monday in the Helix theatre in DCU and fea-

tured over 80 creations from Dublin and surrounding counties. As always the standard was outstanding and models Aoife Copas, Megan Keane and Clodagh Roe gave great performances, much to the delight of art teachers Caoimhe Woods and Carmel Clyne.

Campaign against DkIT cuts Students and staff at Dundalk IT staged a demonstration this week as part of their continued campaign against the funding crisis in the Institute due to Government cutbacks.

In addition to a 36% cut in funding since 2008 the Government and Higher Education Authority also imposed

in January a further cut of 3% on DkIT. This most recent cut has prompted DkIT management to consider further reductions to staff numbers, courses offered and support services for students. A joint campaign to reverse the cuts has been organised by the Teachers’ Union of Ireland and Union

of Students in Ireland which represent the Institutes 5000 students and 260 Lecturers and researchers.

TUI Branch Chair Dr Tom Dooley stated ‘prior to the election we called upon the Minister for Education, Jan O’Sullivan, to reverse the decision to impose additional cutbacks on

DkIT. Regardless of who occupies that position in the incoming Government we will continue to make that demand until the Government comes to its senses and realises that the Institute of Technology has been chronically under-funded for years and cannot endure more Austerity policies.’

Great drama at Dundalk Golf Club league final TEAM Ceann Scribe won the Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock Winter League when they defeated Team Deer Park 5-3 in Sunday’s Matchplay Final.

After winning the qualifying league by a massive 39pts from Ceann Scribe, Deer Park were odds-on favourites to take the 2016 title but the unavailability of three players meant they were forced to concede walkovers to their opponents and they were three matches down before a ball was struck.

Despite this disadvantage, they went agonisingly close to a memorable victory as the five remaining players battled valiantly to defy the odds in the 14-hole event.

Team captain Christy Ward led the way with an emphatic 36pts to 28pts victory over Turlough King during which he reeled off four birdies while Eamonn McEneaney produced three birdies on his way to pipping Eugene Hanratty 36-35 in pulsating battling and Kevin Carthy also came out on top by a single point as he beat Joe Flanagan 36-35 in another gripping contest.

That left it 3-3 but Ceann Scribe captain Danny Miele beat David Murden 35-31 to edge his team front and it was left to Len Mullins to get them over the finishing line as he just held off the brave challenge of Mickey Stewart to win 34-33

and secure the title for Ceann Scribe.

Eamonn McEnenay’s score was enough to win the Overall Individual Prize for the second time during this year’s Winter’s League as he pipped Kevin Carthy on countback while the Category winners were Christy Ward, Tommy Reneghan and Caoimhan O’Callaghan.

When all the individual scores over the duration of the Winter League were totted up the overall category winners were Sean Hession in Category 1, Tom Clarke on Category 2 and Sean Quigley in Category 3. Hession actually tied with Mickey Coburn for the Category 1 prize but won 33-31 in a play-off.

Students from Coláiste Lú in Dundalk claimed three All-Ireland music titles at the annual Scléip competition run

Scléip is a national talent contest for Irish-medium and Gaeltacht postprimary schools which is organised by Gael Linn and the national finals took place in the Amharclann Chlasaic in Clontarf.

The contemporary arts and music competition attracts entrants from across the country and Coláiste Lú were up against schools from Monaghan, Dublin, Limerick, Cork and Kerry.

In the group singing section, the Coláiste Lu group, Na Reibiliúnaigh, came out on top with their creative cover of David Guetta’s Titanium. First year student, Rauirí Mac Closcaí, took

Tried to get lift with Gardai and ambulance A man who failed to persuade Gardai to give him and his friend a lift home from Carlingford, called the ambulance service in an attempt to get back to Dundalk.

As a result, Charles McGinley of 97 Riverside Drive, Red Barns Road,

Dundalk, was sentenced to four months in prison when he pleaded guilty to making a hoax telephone call.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that the defendant and another man were in Carlingford on September 27, 2014 when they asked Gardai for a lift home but were

declined. A phone call was then made to the ambulance services by a man to say his friend was unwell.

There was nothing wrong with either man and it was believed the call had been made in order to get a lift home.

Solicitor, Dermot Mona-

han, stated that his client was abusing alcohol and other substances at the time, and was currently serving a three-year sentence.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that the ambulance service was already stretched as he imposed a four-month sentence.

Karen’s fundraiser for Mellon Educate Karen McArdle and Martin McLoughlin are hosting a charity night on Wednesday March 16 in Courtneys Bar to raise funds for their trip to South Africa with Mellon Educate in November.

Last year, Karen along with 200 volunteers travelled with Mellon Educate to Capetown and worked in the township of Masiphumelele.

She explained that a small school had been built for 600

pupils but was being attended by 1,645 but with only 30 teachers.

“In one week we extended and transformed the school with nine extra classrooms, a playground a courtyard toilet blocks and a special needs unit”, explained Karen.

“It’s Martin’s first building blitz this year but he did get the opportunity to visit some of Mellon Educate’s results program on South Africa last year

he met some of the students in the townships and was blown away by the pride these children take in their education so he promised to return as a Mellon educate volunteer”, added Karen.

The event on Wednesday will see entertainment from Who’s Eddie while there will be a raffle and auction, which includes a signed Arsenal jersey.

All are welcome to come and support the event.

On Saturday, Shona Judge competed in the outdoor Double 720 Mad Hatters Competition in Kilmore, Co. Armagh, taking the gold medal in Recurve.

A teenage driver who failed a breath test ended up with a sixmonth disqualification after he failed to pay a fixed penalty charge within the required time.

Ryan Hughes of 20 Mountain Park, Drumintee, Co Armagh, was told he would have avoided the ban had he paid the charge when he appeared at Dundalk District Court following an incident on May 21 last year.

The court heard that on that date, the defendant initially failed to stop for Gardai at Ravensdale Park. When he subsequently did stop he failed a roadside breath test and a sample taken at Dundalk Garda Station showed that he was over the limit.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that the sample level meant he was en-

titled to a fixed charge notice and although he did make an attempt to pay after 29 days, it was outside the time limit.

Solicitor, Ciaran Hughes, stated that his client would have been liable for a 200 fine and three penalty points but no disqualification, but was too late in attempting to pay.

It was accepted that the dangerous driving charge was not the result of an accident but as a result of Mr Hughes taking corners too quickly.

He stated that the 19-year-old defendant had no previous convictions and was a trainee electrician in Dublin who requires a licence.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 fine in respect of the drink driving and imposed a six month ban, while striking out the dangerous driving charge.

Change of venue for talk on revolutionary accounts Newly-available personal accounts of revolutionary events in Louth and south Armagh will provide the focus of an upcoming historical event at Annagassan on Wednesday March 9 at 7.30pm.

These accounts were recorded

by Rev. Louis O’Kane, who served as a priest in Togher from 1936 to 1940, and went all over Ulster and

beyond in the 1960s and 1970s on a mission to preserve the authentic voices of former Irish Volunteers for posterity.

This event will first examine the life of Rev. O’Kane (1905-73), his County Derry origins and Louth connections. It will outline how the

presence of a tape-recorder in 1958 kick-started his project to capture the memories of men and women of the Irish revolutionary period.

By the time of his death, O’Kane had recorded more than 100 interviews.

judges critique and vote for contestants each week, with the lowest scores from the judges eliminating one contestant.

“We are delighted to be teaming up with The Dundalk Leader in promoting this event and the winner will no doubt benefit by raising their profile in the area and also receive a prize valued at around €1000 with

Contestants can turn up at the audition at the bar on Wednesday March 16 at 10pm.

Although there is no formal application process, David has asked potential Idols to contact them in advance of the auditions to ensure they are catered for on the auditions night.

was huge. Hopefully this will be a great showcase for local talent and lead on to bigger things for them” said David.

Disagreement A 47-year-old man who got into a disagreement at the local Social Welfare office was fined €100 when he pleaded guilty to a public order charge at Dundalk District Court.

Michael O’Hagan of 48 Mary St North, Dundalk, was asked to leave the social welfare office on July 9 last year but when he refused, Gardai were called. He was escorted out of the building and became

abusive to Gardai, before running from the scene and continuing to be threatening and abusive to members of the public and Gardai.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client shouldn’t have behaved in the manner in which he did. He had a disagreement in the office and was under considerable stress, but apologised for his actions.

As we are all to aware tyres like everything else have got very expensive, so it is all the more important that you get the maximum amount of wear as possible from them even if you are fitting second hand tyres.

The most common problems with uneven tyre wear are: * Incorrect tyre pressure. * Incorrect wheel alignment * Incorrect wheel balancing Tyre Pressure. So How often do you check your tyre pressure?

It is recommended to check at least once a month. The correct tyre pressure for you car is listed in the hand book or on the door

pillar or inside petrol/ diesel cap.

Wheel Alignment ( tracking).

How often should you get wheel alignment checked on your car?

It is recommended to check at least once a year.

There are several reasons why your wheels may need alignment apart from the uneven tyre wear which can be very visable.

The steering may be pulling to one side,there may be worn or damaged steering/ suspension joints. Wheel alignment should be checked immediately after any steering/suspension parts are replaced.

Wheel Balancing. How do you know if your wheels need balancing The most common tell tale sign of incorrect wheel balancing is a shake or vibration that comes trough the car at different speeds,you may feel it at 80klm and if you go faster it may seem

to disappear. This vibration from wheels that need balancing can increase ware and tear on your shocks and other componants on your car and you may end replacing parts that would other wise last a lot longer.

How long should tyres last?

The mileage /kilometers you get from your tyres can very much depend on how well you look after them. Its not uncommon for tyres to last less than 10,000 miles and not uncommon for tyres to last over 50,000,miles It has been proven that keeping all of the above mentioned in check will improve m.p.g. (km/L).

The first item on your NCT report refers to side slip which is another term for tracking/wheel alignment.
