Gardai are appealing for witnesses after a fire broke out at a house in Clontygora Court in Dundalk on Sunday morning.

At approximately 3:35am, the house caught fire after residents in the surrounding area reportedly heard a loud bang.

A four year old child and a pregnant woman were among the five occupants of the house taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, with what are described as non-

Two of the occupants of the house were forced to jump from a top bedroom window including the seven and a half months pregnant woman.

In a statement, Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú and Dundalk South councillor Kevin Meenan said they were appalled by the attack at the family home which happened at around 3.35am.

Changes in the Dundalk Leader On behalf of everybody in the Dundalk Leader I would like to send good wishes and congratulations to our now former editor Eunan Whyte who has departed for pastures new after ten years with the newspaper.

Eunan took on the editor role with the Dundalk Leader in 2010 and for the following ten years produced a weekly paper to the highest standards which primarily focused on showing the positive side of the town and surrounding areas. We wish Eunan all the best in his new job and thank him for all the hard work and good humour he has provided over the last decade.

‘This is the latest in a long line of attacks on this house and we understand that the origin of this may be linked to a drugs debt.

‘This property has been the subject of attempted arson attacks in the recent past, which have clearly escalated to the point where five people, including children, were treated in hospital’.

The public representatives said they condemned the attack and repeated their calls for those involved to stop.

They are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the areas of Clontygara Court and Hoey’s Lane between 3am and 4am to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Call for support for local businesses

Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has asked the government to increase proposed business restart grants and give business owners the support they need to survive following the COVID19 crisis. Speaking in the Dail last week Deputy Fitzpatrick outlined the struggles local businesses are currently facing.

“Of the amount we are voting on, €250 million relates to business restart grants. While welcome, that amount does not go far enough. The business sector has suffered greatly since the lockdown. It must be fully supported as it reopens and be given as much financial support as required. We must not forget that the majority of people work for small firms that employ fewer than 50 people. These businesses are the heartbeat of the economy and they need our full support,” explained Deputy Fitzpatrick.

“I have spoken to many business owners in my home town of Dundalk and the surrounding area. Many of them employ fewer than 15 workers. They have used their resources, which many had built up over a number of years, to keep their businesses afloat during the crisis. They have used everything they have earned in recent years to ensure that those jobs will still be there when they reopen. The Government supports put in place were a great source of help to that business and many others around the country. Had we taken the same

approach now as we did during the previous crisis, businesses like them would not have survived.

“The lesson to be learned is that we must throw the rule book out and think outside the box.

The ECB has made money available at an interest rate of 0% and has been clear that this money is available to Ireland. Germany and France have decided to support this stimulus. We must take advantage of it and borrow that money. Now is the time to keep the economy stimulated. In that respect, I appeal to the Government to be bold and adventurous in its July stimulus package.

That package must be generous and target the sectors of the economy that will drive growth,” he added.

The Louth TD also urged the

newly formed coalition government to help businesses ensure their premises were safe for both staff and customers by issuing guidelines as well as financial support.

“We also need to support local restaurants, bars and coffee shops. It was great to see many restaurants, bars and coffee shops preparing to reopen in Dundalk this week. I know it was the same in many other parts of the county, such as Drogheda, Ardee, Dunleer and Carlingford.

“The €250 million set aside for the business restart grant is not enough. Businesses need help to ensure that their premises are safe for customers and staff.

We must plan for a new reality.

I have spoken to many business owners. The one point they all make is that they need support and advice on how to make their premises safe for staff and customers. They not only need financial support, but guidelines,” urged Fitzpatrick.

“If we do not have a strong economy, the Government will not be in a position to fulfil many of the promises made in the programme for Government.

I will conclude by asking the Government to consider all stimulus measures when supporting our economy and not to forget that the majority of workers in the country are employed

by SMEs. It is those businesses that need our support,” noted the Louth TD.

Cricket Club appeal for help to safeguard future Dundalk Cricket Club have appealed for help to ensure the club survives this year. Like every other organisation, COVID-19 has had a severe impact on the club and to add to their woes the club was targeted by vandals who destroyed part of their pitch in Hiney Park. According to committee member Raheel Qamar the fundraiser was launched to help safeguard the club’s future.

“To safeguard the health of our members and community we have followed all regulations and ceased all cricket activity which means that this year we have not collected any funds in the form of subscriptions from our players.

“Unfortunately, we still have to pay for our overheads (Equipment, Ground Maintenance, Insurance etc) and need crucial funds to survive this year. As this is a community-run club,

“What added fuel to the fire was an act of vandalism where some hooligans destroyed part of our pitch and we have to repair the damages. This is why we are now reaching out to the community to help us recover and ensure we continue to enjoy this community sport.

We currently do not know if we will be in a position to resume play when the league restarts next month. Because we play a lot of our games

in Dublin it means it is very difficult for us to adhere to all current regulations while playing away games. With only family members allowed to share the same car it would mean we would need at least 14 cars and that is just not feasible.

It is different for clubs in Dublin who can just put on a mask and get public transport if needs be.

“Since moving to Dundalk the club has grown and we held a very successful youth training camp last year which helped us gain some new members.

There are a lot of positive things going on at the moment in our club but unfortunately COVID19 and these vandals have left us in a precarious position. We have already raised almost €1000 and we are looking to raise €1500 more so if anybody can help us out to safeguard our future we would be very grateful,” stated Raheel.

Landmark day for Dundalk Dog Rescue

Last week was without doubt one of the more special days in the fifteen year history of Dundalk Dog Rescue. Volunteers and friends of the organisation met in Dromiskin for a ‘turning of the sod, ceremony at the site of their long-awaited new rescue and rehoming centre.

Founding member of the group, Ann Moore, was given the honour of turning the sod and it is hoped that work will be completed this side of Christmas. According to committee member Bobby Wain the ceremony was originally planned for earlier on this year but those plans had been scuppered due to the COVID19 crisis.

“We had intended for this

to be a huge celebration with all the people involved in our journey coming along to help mark the occasion but then COVID arrived and we had to put those plans on hold. Because of restrictions we could only invite a small number of our volunteers and supporters to Dromiskin but it was a memorable day for everybody as we took another step closer to realising our dream of opening a new centre.

“Today was a hugely important milestone after three years of tireless fundraising from so many people involved in DDR. It was an especially momentous day for our founder Ann Moore who has worked incredibly hard since starting up this char-

Coláiste Chú Chulainn unveil plans for re-opening safely

A DUNDALK school is planning to equip each classroom with a webcam to enable students who must remain at home to attend the classroom lesson through Microsoft Teams.

Coláiste Chú Chulainn Principal Tomás Sharkey told The Dundalk Leader it is the school’s “full intention to be teaching every student in every year from August 28.

“We see this challenge as an opportunity to showcase our professionalism and commitment,” said Tomás.

The HSE has been using Coláiste Chú Chulainn for a vaccination centre since June and will continue working in the school until August.

“Our facilities are of an excellent standard for this work which gives me even more confidence,” he said.

“Our school is the newest educational building in the region. Our corridors are wide and ventilated.

“Our bathrooms are modern with hot water, proper soap and towel facilities.

Our classrooms have flooring and furnishings that are all easily cleaned to the proper standard.”

Coláiste Chú Chulainn staff completed a compul-

sory Infection Prevention and Control training programme in May and June.

Additional training with the Health & Safety Authority has also been completed.

“Many of our classrooms are larger than the regular size so social distancing is achievable,” said Tomás.

“We have instated an isolation room where a student or staff memberwho becomes ill in school will be properly supported until leaving the building and deep cleaning can take place.

“As a LMETB school we are proud of the innovation and commitment of our staff. Nobody will be found wanting in ensuring every child is taught.”

Coláiste Chú Chulainn is currently in the process of hiring additional cleaning and administration staff as well as recruiting a bigger teaching team.

“We have been working with students, parents and staff to ensure everybody is able to meet the challenges that Covid 19 has thrown at us,” said Tomás.

“We did not stop working during the lockdown and have no intention of holding back in August.”

Luckily we have had brilliant support from the Dundalk and wider community and we have managed to raise €300,000 over the last three years to turn our dream of a new rescue home into a reality. As well as that we have had so many generous people offer us materials and supplies for our new home for nothing or at vastly reduced rates.

“We take dogs from pounds who otherwise would be euthanised and try to find homes for them but as well as that we want to change the attitudes and thinking of people when

it comes to dogs. Unfortunately we are one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to laws on dog welfare and that’s something we are looking to fix. One of the positive things to come out of COVID was the fact that our kennels were pretty much emptied out during the crisis as people who were at home for the three or four months decided to get a dog. We will continue to be advocates for dogs and we will scream from the rooftops until attitudes in this country change. Sisters stepping it out for The Birches Three sisters will take to the hills in Ravensdale this weekend to raise funds for the Birches Alzheimer Day Care Centre in Dundalk.

Noreen McManus, Pauline Caffrey and Jeanette Morgan know all too well the brilliant work carried out by the staff in the Birches having seen at first hand the quality of care their father Maurice received before he passed away.

The sisters have started a gofundme page ahead of their trek this weekend and have already raised just over a thousand euro.

According to Pauline the trio wanted to give a little bit back to the Birches as a thank you for all the great work they do.

“The idea came about Maurice Morgan. during lockdown actually the hills in Ravensdale was during the time where when I was walking around with my husband Liam. It we were restricted to 2km

walking and we thought that maybe we could organise a sponsored walk to help out the Birches. I asked my two sisters Noreen and Jeanette if they would be interested and they agreed so this Saturday we will walk 30,000 steps between us on steep terrain around Ravensdale,” explained Pauline.

“Our father Maurice died nine years ago but prior to his death he received the most wonderful care in the Birches and we were able to see at first hand the brilliant work they do in the care centre. The dedication of the staff is second to none and they are constantly taking the residents out for day trips or organising music sessions inside the centre. You can see the residents light up when they hear the music playing

and I know my father really enjoyed it. We even saw him singing along to a ballad on one occasion and he never really sang before in his life. Some of them may not remember later on that the music had been playing but in that moment you can see it definitely brings them joy.

“Our Dad published a book of short stories and we will be bringing that with us and we will stop and think of him on our trek as this walk is in his memory as well,” added Pauline.

Seek Festival to go ahead in August O’Mhurchú welcomes

With so many festivals and events across the country cancelled this year, SEEK contemporary urban arts festival is fast becoming Dundalk’s 2020 festival of hope.

Largescale street art on public spaces in the heart of Dundalk town may well have been the furthest thing from people’s minds three months ago, however it could not be more important to us right now.

SEEK 2020 will take place in various locations in Dundalk Town Centre between the 1st and 8th of August, and will carry on the successful legacy of the inaugural festival in June 2019. This year’s artists have just been announced and it’s an exciting line-up; Aches, Omin, Claire Prouvost, Friz and Chula Mente!

Barry Finnegan, local artist and one of the organisers said, “I’m delighted we are still able to go ahead with Seek festival this year given the current climate.

It was a great success last year and we hope to achieve more this year. As it is an outdoor event it can be safely enjoyed by all and I know people will be impressed with the artists and themes that we are showcasing this year.”

ATM repair

The news that AIB is to reinstall an ATM at a shop on the Avenue Road that was damaged during an incident this week has been welcomed by Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.

The bank machine at the Maxol fuel station on the Avenue Road was damaged on Wednesday, July 1, in what the Louth TD called ‘an utterly pointless incident of vandalism or a crude theft attempt’.

The machine, which is used by dozens of people each day, has been out of operation since, but the Dundalk deputy has been in touch with the bank, who told him that repairs are to be carried out on Saturday.

Mr Ó Murchú said: ‘This ATM is very busy and is a vital resource for those living and working at this end of the town.

The machine was damaged during what I can only describe as an utterly pointless incident of vandalism, but I have been in touch with AIB North East representatives asking for them to prioritise the repair of this machine.

‘I am pleased to say that they have confirmed that ‘all parts for the repair have been sourced’ and it is expected that an engineer will be on site tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

‘It depends how long the repair will take, but it is hoped to have it back in action on Saturday’.

And the Sinn Féin representative said he had also raised the issue of the ongoing loss of the AIB’s ATM at Clanbrassil Street, which was stolen during a raid in April, along with the adjacent Ulster Bank cash machine.

He said: ‘The Ulster Bank has reinstated their outdoor ATM since the start of June. However, the AIB machine has not been replaced and this has resulted in long queues forming outside the branch as people stand in line to use the ATMs inside.

‘AIB management has confirmed to me that they hope to have the Clanbrassil Street machine replaced ‘in the very near future’ following some delays with tendering during the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘This will be very good news for Dundalk as local businesses open up in the town centre’.

Plans for Park and Share outlined Plans for the construction of a Park and Share Scheme at Gibstown, 250m west of Junction 16 on the M1 have been outlined in a Louth County Council report.

The proposed project is being developed as a pilot scheme to support commuters who currently use the R215 and other roads near M1 junctions, as an informal parking area.

Drivers currently park in the hard-shoulder before carpooling with a friend or colleague before completing the rest of the commute.

The proposed scheme in-

cludes a new car parking facility off the R215, that will support carpooling but improve safety and security for commuters and other traffic using the R215 and other roads, by removing unnecessary hazards from the roadsides.

The proposal includes a new off-road 226 space car park and a right-turn lane on the R215 for westbound drivers wishing to access the new Park and Share facility.

A total of four submissions were received within the statutory time frame.

St Nicholas Avenue show community spirit

The close-knit community in St Nicholas Avenue were out in force last Saturday for their annual spring clean which was organised by the residents committee. The annual clean up usually takes place in April but had to be postponed due to COVID19 restrictions. Accord-

ing to Mickey McEneaney who is chairman of the St Nicholas Avenue Resident’s Association the annual event was well attended with everybody doing their bit to keep the avenue looking it’s best.

“We are a very closeknit community down here and we’ve organised this

annual spring clean every year since we relaunched the residents association ten years ago. The majority of residents come out to help and we ask everybody to clean up the area outside their house. We take to the pavements and clean them all up as well and I think there’s a great

sense of pride from people in the avenue. We have hanging baskets around at Maxwell Row which we maintain and that’s generally where we meet up to start the spring clean.

“Unfortunately we had some smart individual dump who obviously thought it would be

funny to dump a black bin bag full of rubbish on the street on the very day of the clean-up. All in all though it was a great day and on behalf of the committee I would like to thank everybody for taking the time to come out and show everyone that we are very proud of our

wonderful street,” stated Mickey.

Meanwhile, the ladies in the residents association have come up with a lovely idea to remember those from the Avenue who have passed on. With the ‘Blessings of the Graves’ cancelled this year the ladies have

decided to go around each house handing out blessed St Brigid candles to be lit on the footpath outside of each house on the evening of the 19th July at 9pm.

The candles will act as a mark of respect for all St Nicholas Avenue residents who have gone to their eternal resting place.

Polio Survivors Ireland hit with funding issues during COVID19 Like most charities across the country Polio Survivors Ireland has been hit hard by the COVID19 pandemic with all fundraisers ceased since early March.

Brendan Moore from Pearse Park who is a member of Polio Survivors Ireland has organised many fundraisers for the organisations over the years and he has appealed for people to think of the group now that funding has dried up due to the global pandemic.

“Like many other charities

during the pandemic we have had to cease all fundraising activities and this has hit us very hard financially,” explained Brendan. “We have had to cancel a major Country and Western concert which was due to be held in Dundalk and we also had a big concert planned for this autumn where many of Ireland’s top country singers who had committed their services for free and that has been cancelled as well,” explained Brendan.

“Obviously these fundraisers are vitally important to us in

financial terms and because of our current situation we are asking the public for urgent help,” pleaded Brendan. “We are asking people to consider thinking of us when making their will.

“This work was begun by Fine Gael in the last government and it is welcome that the new Government is prioritising the recovery from the economic shock of Covid-19. They are working to repair the damage that has been done, and restore confidence and prosperity.

Small businesses will play a huge role in that as they are the lifeblood of the local economy.

“These targeted supports that have been developed by the Department in collaboration with Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Offices, will be available to companies of including micro enterprises, SMEs, and sectors most exposed with a focus on food, manufacturing and internationally traded services including exporters and importers.

“Other measures include the Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS), liquidity supports such as 0% finance for 6 months from MicroFinance Ireland, rates waivers from local authorities and the warehousing of tax liabilities of SMEs by Revenue.

“The Restart Grant is being rolled out through the Local Authorities across the country so Louth County Council has a crucial role here.

“Impacted firms that are in rateable premises can apply to the council for grant support of between €2,000 and a maximum of €10,000 equivalent to their rates bill of 2019.

SHOPPING AROUND IMPORTANT STEP IN LOWERING PREMIUMS

Those not shopping around when renewing car insurance could be missing out on potential savings based on the findings of a recent survey.

In response to an AA Car Insurance survey of over 7,000 Irish people, 39.67% of those surveyed strongly agreed that they were able to secure a better price than their original renewal offer by shopping around when they most recently renewed their car insurance. In addition, a further 18.04% of those surveyed by the AA partially agreed that they had saved by shopping around.

In contrast, just 1 in 10 of those surveyed strongly disagreed that they had been able to make savings by shopping around.

“The majority of us are aware of how important it is to shop around when renewing any insurance policy but, with many people trying to juggle working from home alongside

looking after children or assisting elderly relatives, finding the time to do so can be difficult,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “However, a lack of free time doesn’t mean that you can’t still shop around to ensure that you are getting the best price on your car insurance, or any insurance product for that matter. If you are short on time, it may

be a good idea to engage the services of a broker or an intermediary who can compare multiple quotes on your behalf – saving you time.”

According to the survey, over half of respondents made more of an effort to shop around when renewing their car insurance within the past 12 months, than they had in previous years. 38.08% of those surveyed strongly

agreed that they had devoted more time to comparing quotes this year when renewing their car insurance, with a further 29.69% stating they somewhat agreed with this statement.

“For some, staying with their existing provider may be the best option for them, but it is still worth doing some research to ensure you’re not overpaying for your cover. However, it’s also important to compare what is and isn’t covered by each policy and not to focus solely on the price,” Faughnan added.

“It’s important to look at any potential cover exclusions included in any policy you are considering purchasing to ensure your needs are met and that you don’t find yourself only realising something isn’t covered when you attempt to make a claim. Doing your research on both what the policy covers and the price point will help ensure you get the best deal.”
