A local man who was so touched by the tragic events in Manchester that he showed his support for the city where his older brothers lives by running a 10k race just days after the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena on May 22.

Mark sets sights in sheep shearing record

By Eunan Whyte A local man is testing his talents to the limit this weekend as he has set his sights on creating a new Irish sheep shearing record.

Mark McGeown from Ravensdale will take on the gruelling challenge over ten hours on Sunday. This schedule involves eight hours of shearing with one hour break and two half hour breaks over the course of the challenge which starts at 8am and finishes at 6pm.

Chad shows his support for Manchester terror attack victims A local man who was so touched by the tragic events in Manchester that he showed his support for the city where his older brothers lives by running a 10k race just days after the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena on May 22.

“I wasn’t really put off travelling, but it wasn’t until I got to Manchester, seeing armed Police with semi-automatic weapons and the reaction from others that I started to become somewhat nervous about being in the city” stated Chad.

Ryan Conroy, Chad’s older brother is a vice principal at Ringway Primary school, Manchester, and he had the difficult task of explain to young children many of whom had friends who attended the concert what had happened. Such a task is a test of character

“I remember what it was like following Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris, I was teaching English there at the time, and it was difficult going into class the next day and trying to reassure young teenagers that everything would be ok, so I wanted to be there for my brother”, stated Chad.

The trip had already been planned before the attack, and being fitness enthusiasts the two brothers aimed to do the 10k race and spend time planning Ryan’s upcoming wedding.

The great Manchester 10K race went ahead with tougher security. Tens of thousands came out to support the race, an esti-

mated 80,000 watched on the streets while 35,000 runners participated in the greater Manchester 10k.

The Dundalk brothers were in the first category to start the race which started in the city centre went all the way to old Trafford and back around again.

“The atmosphere was amazing. High emotions in the air after the poet Tony Walsh read a sixminute piece – you could really feel the electricity in the air.

“The attitude of the people of Manchester was incredible, with artists doing tattoos of the bee which I discovered later is in honour of the ‘worker bees,” stated Chad.

The event was a testament to the city- people really showed strength despite being afraid of.

“The crowd had posters with messages of support. People were coming out of their homes with food and glasses of water just to help cheer on the runners.

“Many of the crowd helped runners across the finish line. It was an incredible show of strength and support from the city. A big public display to symbolise that they would not be terrorised,” stated Chad Conroy.”

McGahon elected chair Great talent at Spirit Store of Municipal District Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has been elected as Chair of the Dundalk Municipal District for the 2017/2018 year.

Speaking on his election as Chairperson, Cllr McGahon said his aim was to make sure the council continued to be effective.

“Naturally enough it is a great honour to have been elected as Chairperson of the Dundalk Municipal District which is the successor of the old Dundalk Town Council.

“We have huge scope with reserved functions to increase the power and remit of the Municipal District and we should continue to push the boundaries with this rather than let power being diluted any further.

“We have already seen those boundaries pushed in the last year with reserve functions enacted which allowed for the establishment of a Sub Committee on Brexit for

Population density in Paris 15 times higher than Dublin The most densely populated region in the EU in 2015 was Paris with an average of 21,000 inhabitants per square kilometre, or 15 times that of Dublin which had 1,428 per square kilometre. Paris was followed by the London boroughs of Tower Hamlets (15,000) and Lambeth (12,000). The least densely populated regions of the EU are Lapland in Finland with 2 people per square km, followed by two Swedish regions - Norrbottens län and Jämtlands län According to the Eurostat figures, the average EU population density was 117 inhabitants per square km, which is almost double the Irish average of 68. Dublin was by far the most densely populated region in Ireland. The other regions ranged from 94 in the Southern and Eastern region to 32 in the West of Ireland.

A man who claimed that his rights had been denied after he was not provided with an interpreter when he was arrested on suspicion of drink driving failed in a bid to have the charge of refusing to give a sample dismissed.

As a result, Tomas Kancierius of Knockonny, Co Monaghan, was banned from driving for four years, and received a further ban of ten years for driving without in-

surance.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that if there was a doubt over understanding the language then the accused was entitled to an interpreter.

The prosecuting Garda gave evidence that at no time during the process did he have any difficulty understanding the defendant, nor did Mr Kancierius have any trouble understanding what was put to him.

When asked by Judge Coughlan was he satisfied that the defendant understood everything, the Garda replied “absolutely”.

As a result, Judge Coughlan stated that in light of the Garda’s evidence he would not dismiss the case and imposed a four-year ban for failing to provide a specimen.

Silver medal for Ruairí Team Torres’s Ruairí O Murchu took home a well-deserved silver at the Leinster Open in Greystones, Co Wicklow last weekend.

Competing in the under 74kg division Ruairí enjoyed early success with his favourite submission the ‘Guillotine Choke’, and when facing his opponent in the final he came agonisingly close on two occasions to almost submitting his opponent with the choke, but his opponent dug deep and somehow managed to tough it out.

Not one to give up, Ruairí pursued submission options until the final bell but was ultimately edged on points and had to settle for silver. Congratulation also to Aaron Conroy who trains regularly with Team Torres and took home a Gold medal.

Lithuanian fun day

Dundalk’s Lithuanian community is organising a family fun day on Saturday June 24 in Dundalk Stadium.

A group is being formed for the large community now in Dundalk to organise such events to bring Lithuanians together.

The event on June 24 will run from 11am to 5pm and at 8pm there will be a concert featuring former Eurovision singer, Donny Montell.

This will coincide with St Jonas’ Festival/Midsummer festival which is celebrated in Lithuania.

Ruth is selected for Irish Fed Cup team

The Irish Ladies National Tennis Champion Ruth Copas will represent Ireland as part of a team participating in the Fed Cup next month at the National Tennis School & Tennis Club Acvila in Moldova from June 12 to 17.

The call-up to the Irish squad is another huge step in the blossoming career of the Dundalk Tennis Club player, who is naturally delighted with the news.

“It’s been a dream come true since I started playing tennis. I tried for the past three years. I was so happy to get the news, I was just home and got to enjoy that moment with my family,” stated Ruth.

On New year’s 2016, Ruth became the Irish Ladies Champion after defeating Karola Bejenaru (World No 811).

Ruth is currently on a full-time scholarship at the university of New

Mexico. “I’d set goals first to get the scholarship, then to play in the Fed Cup and next a professional tour.” Said Ruth.

Ruth has been studying a for her degree in business administration full time in New Mexico and balancing her training every day which

consists for at least two hours training and gym work then traveling to play tournaments at the weekend.

“The scholarship has amazing and it’s been so much fun Stateside.

The standard of tennis is so high and the training is in intense. If you want to be the best you must train with the best,” stated Ruth.

In the Irish ranks, Ruth is number 1 in the Irish team, the team will compete in the high stakes euro Africa zone which is made up of 22 countries.

There will be three players and one team sub, so two single players and one doubles representing Ireland.

The 20-year-old, National tennis champion developed as a tennis athlete at the Dundalk Tennis club under the directions and coaching of John McGahon who was also a junior Irish National Champion and Internationally ranked player.

With 40 members in total there was great support for all as the group offers a training base and schedules for runners of all abilities to cover for race distances from 5km to full

The group’s next major target is the Dublin Marathon in October with a 21-week schedule commencing on 07th June.

The group meet on Wednesday nights in DkIT. There will be an information night on May 31 starting at 7pm. Directions from main reception on the night.

The information night will end with a group run of 26.2 minutes just to get warmed up for the following 21 weeks ending with the Dublin Mara-

thon on October 29. The group will also focus on the Rock n Roll Half Marathon in Dublin in August for those looking to test the water first with the 13.1 miles challenge.

An event also in the focus of the group will be the Magic Hill Marathon and Half Marathon.

The event will be September 10 in Ravensdale and will include the “Magic Hill” as part of the route. Full details on the event to follow closer to the date.

Empty units ‘choking developments in towns’ A leading retail expert has hit out at the practice of large retailers like Dunnes Stores undermining trading in towns around the country by leaving vacant buildings sitting idle.

The Dunnes Stores shop on Park Street has been closed since 2009 and has remained empty right up to the present day.

According to David Fitzsimons, CEO of Retail Excellence this practice of closing town centre shops to move out to the outskirts is ‘choking developments in the area’. Speaking in the Seanad he claimed that there were no efforts by companies like Dunnes to rent their units out to alternative businesses.

“These empty units which are common all over the country are undermining the ability of towns to trade well. The shops are big boxes of vacant space and they just sit there idle. Unfortunately, there is very little that local planners and local authorities can do about it,” stated David.

“Retail giants like Dunnes have left several units vacant in towns across the country, after vacating them to move its operations to buildings on the outskirts of towns.

Responding to Martin Conway’s complaints David Fitzsimons said, “there has been no effort made to rent it out to an alternative business.” while adding that this is being repeated all over the country.

“These empty units are undermining the ability of towns to trade well,” he said. “These shops are vacant space and they tie the hands of local planners and authorities. We need to think about town centres from a societal perspective. We need urban centres where people can congregate as well as have a shopping experience,” stated David.

Music Generation Louth’s youth wind band went on tour last Wednesday, visiting three primary schools in Dundalk to entertain hundreds of children and promote MGL’s fantastic band programme.

Accompanied by their tutors Michael Gaskin and Bernie Balfe, the young musicians played brilliantly. As well as performing some well-known pieces together, the individual members performed solos to demonstrate the unique sounds of each instrument, and the techniques involved in playing.

A man who pleaded guilty to theft and trespass charges was given a six-month suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court.

Sean Mulvey with an address at 51 Glenmore Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was observed

by Gardai after they had responded to an alarm activation at a premises at the IDA Business Park, on June 16, 2015.

The defendant also pleaded guilty to stealing a 24 pack of Budweiser from Dunnes, the Marshes, on February 18 last year, and also taking a tracksuit to the value of €46 from Elverys Sports, Dundalk Retail Park, on October 5 last year.

Mr Mulvey also stole clothing worth €70 from Heatons on November 11 last.

As Judge John Coughlan imposed the suspended sentence he warned Mr Mulvey not to reoffend.

Louth County Council to introduce Big summer G show in aid new choice based letting system of Cara Cancer Louth County Council has announced that it has introduced a Choice Based Letting (CBL) system for housing allocation which came into effect from Wednesday May 10. Applicants to LCC’s Social Housing Support waiting list will be able to choose a council or voluntary housing body property through CBL. The new system, which sits alongside the Social Housing Support Scheme, will operate online via cbl.louthcoco. ie. The site will showcase the range of available accommodation. From the launch date,

eligible housing applicants interested in CBL properties can register their interest in a suitable property through the website. They must accept the property if it is offered to them. A suitable property is one that matches the applicant’s housing needs in their area of choice.

Commenting on the new system, Louth County Council Director of Housing, Joe McGuinness said: “We believe CBL will improve the efficiency of housing allocation in Louth as it allows people to select a property in

their area of choice that they are specifically interested in, thus reducing the number of refusals and cutting down on related waiting periods.

“CBL has been successfully operating in other local authority areas around the country and we are confident of the same success here. We encourage those who are eligible to sign up to CBL”, he stated.

Should more than one applicant be interested in a particular property, factors such as the applicants’ time on the council’s waiting list, family

size, the approved property type, the applicants’ category under the Scheme of Allocations, and good estate management will be considered.

“We are writing to eligible housing applicants to inform them about the opportunity to express an interest in particular properties and how this system will work. This is an online system and anyone who doesn’t have access to the internet can use the computers at Louth County Council offices, where staff will be happy to help”, added Mr McGuinness.

Sean Smith of 12 Point Road, Dundalk, was banned from driving for two years after pleading guilty to a no insurance charge at Dundalk District Court.

The defendant was stopped on July 7 last at Oldbridge, Toberona, and failed to produce his insurance.

Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that the defendant had just started a business as a satellite engineer having been on Social Welfare, and asked that the judge would spare him a disqualification.

However, Judge John Coughlan imposed the ban and a €100 fine.

Good news on housing funds

There was good news for older people and those with disabilities who need to have home improvements after it

was announced that funding is being made available.

The grants that are made available, whether

large or small, can greatly improve the quality of life of people with a disability or who are reaching an age in

life when they are less mobile.

Dundalk Councillor John McGahon has said that the €1.2m provided by the Government to Louth County Council for Housing Adaptations for Older People and People with a disability will be a fantastic boost for people who are currently waiting on improvements to their homes.

“The grant is 80% funded by the Government and 20% funded by ALONE, the charity that supports older people to age at home, hosted the Befriending Network Ireland’s Louth County Council. National Seminar this week. Attending and speaking at the event was Rodd Bond of Netwell Casala DkIT. Mr Bond is pictured with Sean Moynihan – CEO at ALONE. Housing Adaptation Grants are one of the most common issues I deal with as a Councillor for Dundalk and North Louth. This substantial investment will allow extensions to be built for people with a disability as well as housing adaptations to improve mobility aid (such as stair lifts, access ramps, etc).

“This is the type of funding that ensures older people and people with disabilities can stay in their homes for longer. I have helped a lot of people get these grants and if anyone is interested in applying they should get in contact with me”, added Cllr McGahon.

Local basketball club, Liby Dynamites, has achieved a major coup by getting one of America’s top coaches to take part in their upcoming summer camp.

Man guilty of a serious assault A man who pleaded guilty to an assault charge was sentenced to nine months in prison when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Liam Gray of 34 Broughton St, Dundalk, appeared for the consideration of a Probation Report arising out of incidents on April 21 last year. He also pleaded guilty to trespass and entering a vehicle at Old Muirhevna in Dundalk.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, conceded that his client’s previous Probation Report

had been better and he had told him it was unacceptable to miss three appointments.

Mr Lavery stated that the Probation Officer was willing to work with him again and added that he is a person who has some promise, while he had only one previous conviction.

However, Judge John Coughlan stated that this was a serious assault as he imposed a sentence of nine months in custody.

The judge fixed recognisances for an appeal.

Clay-shooting champion, Ryan Byrne continued his good form of late when he took the top prize once again with a score of 308 at the Leinster Inter-league final.

Back in April the Louth village teenager scored an exceptionally high gun score of 83 securing him a joint top spot at the South Wicklow Championship, and in his latest outing the youngest member of the Byrne family once again took to the gun range at the Leinster inter-league final at Courtlough Balbriggan.

outdone by the teenagers Aoife’s father Tony McComish won first prize in the Veterans category.

Ryan discovered his love for clay shooting from his father Peter and along with his brother Jake. The two brothers travel the length and breadth of the country taking part in competitions.

As the youngest member of the family Ryan has some big boots to fill, with two All-Ireland champions in the household. However, the win at the weekend has once again set Ryan on the road to even greater success.

Ryan will be representing Ireland this coming July when he travels to England for a two-day clay- shooting tournament.

Students in the DkIT Ceol Oirghialla Traditional Music Ensemble who feature in the premier

A television documentary, The Road to Speyfest, an entertaining music documentary made by students on the BA (Hons) Film and Television Production and featuring performances by students from the DkIT Ceol Oirghialla Traditional Music Ensemble will be premiered in the Carroll Building at Dundalk Institute of Technology at 7pm on June 8.

Co-produced with Hannah Conroy and John McCallig from the BA (Hons) Film and Television Production programme at DkIT, the documentary features six students from the BA (Hons) Applied Music programme – Martha Guiney (flute), Brianna Madden (button accordion, vocals), Conor Bogue (banjo), Mike Waters (guitar), Ciara Brannigan (tin

whistle, dance), and Jane Meehan (fiddle). The group also featured flute player Maurice Mullen who was a student on the MA Traditional Music Studies, an innovative online programme with students spread throughout the country.

An album of newly composed traditional music by lecturers and performers Dr Adèle Commins and Dr Daithí Kearney and co-produced with DkIT graduate Kial Wallace will also be launched on the night. A Louth Lilt is inspired by people and places in Louth and further afield. From the snows of Norway to the sunsets of Brazil, the legends of the Táin to aspects of everyday life, the music draws on Irish musical traditions with an ear to the wider world. Encompassing influences from the

artists rich and varied musical experiences, the pieces reflect a lifetime of engaging with various musical cultures and personalities. A collection of the tunes featured on the album has also been published, which will be a useful educational resource for students of the music.

Both of these research outputs are linked to Summer Undergraduate Research Projects completed at DkIT in 2016.

Exhibition uncovers Hidden Dundalk An Tain Arts Centre will host a photographic exhibition entitled ‘Hidden Dundalk’ from Thursday June 15 to Saturday July 8. This is a unique collection of photographs that detail the strange and wonderful gothic architecture around town.

The artists involved in this exhibition, Neil Waters and Inga Kazokaite unwittingly started this project over three years ago while out walking the dog. Due to the sheer volume of available material, a huge body

A local youth group has been recognised for its contribution to the community after collecting a Traveller Pride Award.

The group established a youth club for Traveller children called Lucht Siúil Óga in 2016 and as a result of their great work, the group of ten young Travellers were identified throughout their community with individual leadership skills. The leaders included Niamh Black, Sylvia Black, Kerri Lee McDermott, Kieran McDonagh, Courtney Quilton, Caoimhe Gaffey, Carly Stokes, Michael Quinn, Patrick Gaffey and Gerry Joyce, who were honoured to receive the

award.

These young Traveller aged 17 to 23 have put in the time energy and their own money into setting up a Traveller run Youth Club, the first one in the country. They are great role models for their community and indeed the wider community.

The Traveller Youth Club 7 to 10 years was affiliated to Youth Work Ireland (Louth).

The Young Leaders from Lucht Siúil Óga meet every Tuesday to plan activities ranging from arts & crafts to movie nights for the youth club, which runs every Wednesday evening catering for 20 young people in Muirhevnamor.

A man who was caught driving one day after a disqualification came into effect was banned for a further two years when he pleaded guilty to the offence at Dundalk District Court.

Richard McKeown, an apprentice electrician and father of one, from Summerhill, Knockbridge, was stopped by Gardai on October 7 last year and admitted having no insurance.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the 24-year-old had been given a ban on September 21, with the disqualification to take effect 14 days later, but he had made an error in driving.

Mr MacGuill argued that on that date the conviction had been recorded for drink driving with the no insurance charge struck out. As a result, he didn’t have a previous for no insurance. Judge John Coughlan agreed as him imposed a twoyear ban and €150 fine.

Danny takes the honours at Dundalk Golf Club Twelve handicapper Danny Miele took full advantage of the shorter green course to take Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition with a fine score of 45pts.

Miele went around in 75 gross and will see his handicap cut after he shot a round that included one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys, with only one of the bogeys producing a return of one point.

His overall score of 45pts was

two more than Eamonn Laverty (15) who needed two rounds of count back to take second overall from Ultan Gaughran (8) and Sean Gallagher (22).

Gaughran claimed Category 1 while Gallagher took Category 3 with Michael Keating (17) taking Category 2. Teenager Josh Mackin, now off 2, had the best gross with a level par 36pts while Eamonn Laverty was the winner of the 3Ts qualifier and now goes

forward to represent the club in the next stage.

Sunday’s competition was also a qualifier for the Harry Walsh Cup which is a matchplay competition for players with a handicap of 17 or higher. Defending champion Derek Teather was among the 16 qualifiers after shooting an impressive 41pts off 17 while Sean Gallagher (22) was the leading qualifier with a superb score of 43pts. Nine points

covered the 16 qualifiers with the final man making it in on 34/16.

Local cycling scene going from strength to strength

The growing popularity of cycling was highlighted by the huge numbers that took part in the tenth staging of the Tour of Louth.

In June 2008 Cúchulainn Cycling Club staged the very first Tour of Louth endurance cycling event.

Around 70 cyclists took part in what was hailed as a major success. It surely says something about the state of cycling at the minute and also about the success of the club that over 380 cyclists lined out on Sunday morning to roll out for the 2017 edition and the 10th running of the Tour of Louth.

Two groups of cyclists left their departure point at the DkIT Sports Centre on Sunday morning in brilliant bright sunshine to tackle one of the two possible routes, a 45km route and a more testing 105km route. In line with the inclusive ethos of the club the event is designed to cater for all abilities of cyclists The 45km route took the cyclists from Dundalk to Ardee via Castlebellingham, Kilsaran and the new link road and back home to Dundalk via the old Ardee road.

The more challenging 105km route took the cyclists to Ardee and back and then they carried on straight through the town and headed out towards the Cooley mountains.

cle to confront them was the infamous Jenkinstown Hill where even the most seasoned cyclist ignores the hocus pocus of the magic hill to concentrate on the huffing and puffing on the monster that is Jenkinstown. Then on to the Long Woman’s Grave for a short food stop before descending back to sea level via Davy’s Hill and on through Omeath and Carlingford before turning for home.

As could be evidenced by the smiling and laughing of the large crowd of weary cyclists who gathered in DkIT Sports Centre to avail of the post-cycle food a good time was had by all.

A special congratulations must go out to the Chairman of the Leisure section of Cúchulainn Cycling Club, Jason Boyle,

on his management and planning for this year’s event. With the help of his team he created an event that would surely be the envy of any cycling club in the country.

An Post Ras Meanwhile, after eight days of hard racing, 1,200km, the An Post Rás concluded in Skerries on Sunday May 28. The Louth Cuchulainn team of Alan Gray, Liam Dolan, John Fitzpatrick and Ray O`Shaughnessy all safely completed the event.

Misfortune did hit the team on stage 1 from Dublin to Longford when Alan came down in a crash and broke a finger.

However a splint, some tape and a modified glove saw him impressively soldier on. A consultation with the race doctor at the end of the stage con-

cluded that if Alan could handle the pain he could continue. Stopping never crossed his mind.

The hardest days of the race were stages 4 through 6, which were raced through the hills of Donegal. Searing heat and steep hills made the racing extremely hard. The climbs of the Mamore Gap and the Glengesh Pass were especially challenging.

Stage 7 to Ardee, which was to be a homecoming of sorts for the Louth team was a total wash out with the rain falling from start to finish. However this didn’t impact the racing and the 167km from Donegal town to Ardee had an average speed of just over 49kph.

Alan and Ray had both completed their 3rd Rás each, while it was John’s first attempt at the event.

A return steam train excursion from Dundalk to Dublin Connolly will leave Dundalk station on Sunday June 4. The train will arrive at Dundalk station at 11:35am and depart ten minutes later at 11.45.

The return journey departs Dublin Connolly at 4pm and arrives back in Dundalk at 5.20pm.

The Dundalk Railway Heritage Society have been allocated 60 seats on the above train. The return fare is €27 for an adult and €18 for a child.

Tickets may be purchased at Dundalk Railway Station or the tourist office, Market Square, Dundalk.

Early booking is advised as there is usually a high demand for these tickets.

Local schools set for upgrades Thirteen Schools in County Louth will undergo major improvements this summer thanks to a Government funding initiative which is aimed at improving the standard of schools around the country.

The Summer Works Scheme will see mechanical, sanitation and roofing upgrades to buildings in both primary schools and secondary schools across the county. The purpose scheme is to devolve funding to individual school authorities to undertake small-scale building works which,

ideally, can be carried out during the summer months or at other times that avoid disrupting the operation of the school.

Under the terms of the scheme, school authorities are empowered to manage these works with guidance from and minimal interaction with the Department.

Funding for small scale projects will be allocated in accordance with the prioritisation criteria attaching to the scheme which, in the normal course, include the ability to have the works carried out during the summer. The scheme

announced in October 2015 will apply to both 2016 and 2017.

Hybrid or electric vehicles are being considered by motorists

Almost 1 in 3 motorists are considering purchasing a hybrid or electric vehicle when they next change their car, according to recent research from AA Ireland.

In response to an AA Car Insurance survey of over 3,000 motorists, 9.39% of those polled stated they were “very likely” to consider purchasing an electric or hybrid vehicle when buying their next car. Meanwhile, a further 19.84% described themselves as “somewhat likely” to consider moving away from a petrol or diesel powered vehicle.

“In a relatively short period of time there has been significant improvements in the electric and hybrid vehicles that are being produced, namely in terms of reduced charging times, improved range, and making them more affordable to the average motorist,” John Farrell, Commercial Director at AA Ireland stated.

“In terms of the future of motoring, electric vehicles will move away from being somewhat of a niche vehicle and will become an increasingly common sight on our roads. Our AA Rescue technicians are already attending to electric car breakdowns and, with these vehicles likely to become more and more popular in the coming years, we’re continuing to invest in the technology needed to attend to electric car breakdowns.”

John Farrell, Commercial Director at AA Ireland. range of fully electric vehicles were among the concerns expressed by those who stated they were more likely to stick with a traditional petrol or diesel powered car when making their next purchase.

54.28% of those unlikely to purchase a hybrid or electric vehicle identified the absence of suitable charging facilities in Ireland currently as their primary reason they were unlikely to make a change.

Meanwhile, 45.28% expressed concern over the effective mileage range of fully electric cars, while 43.16% felt that hybrid and electric vehicles are currently too expensive.

“Electric cars aren’t some passing fad and they will very much be a key part of the future of motoring in Ireland.

It’s time for our government to accept this fact and facilitate the installation of a greater number of electric ve-

hicle charging points across the country if we are to avoid being left behind while the rest of the world embraces the future,” Farrell added.

“In a short space of time we have seen a number of exciting developments when it comes to the future of motoring, including the mileage range of fully electric vehicles increasing from an average of 150km on a single charge to a current range of between 250 and 300 kilometres. In line with this we’ve seen the number of charging points in Ireland increase, although there is still scope for improvement in this area, but also we’ve seen the emergence of mobile charging solutions which help to minimise the inconvenience for electric car owners in the event of a breakdown. While electric cars, like their petrol or diesel equivalent, do break down our Rescue team are better equipped than ever to respond to such incidents and we look forward to continuing to invest in the necessary technology to respond to electric car incidents as these vehicles become increasingly prevalent on our roads.”

The survey found that men were almost 5% more likely to opt for a hybrid or electric vehicle when purchasing their next car.10.36% of men stated they were very likely to move away from a petrol or diesel vehicle, with a further 21.33% describing themselves as “somewhat likely” to do so, compared to 8.40% and 18.83% of women respectively.
