By Tamara O’Connell THREE lucky Louth men are celebrating after winning prizes in Louth GAA’s Double House Draw. Colin Hoey from Louth Village won a choice of two houses in Blackrock or Drogheda or a cash prize alternative of €200,000.

Michael Mooney from Haggardstown won the second house and Jason Finlay from Ardee won a cash prize of €10,000.

“I’m delighted surely.

My wife, Emer, is even more delighted. We were watching the draw live on the tablet so we knew straight away,” said Michael.

Dundalk and the wider community have dug deep to support local woman Sonia Hoey who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

A massive fundraising campaign was launched on Tuesday by Sonia’s nephew Daniel, with the aim of raising €80,000 which will help pay for life changing treatment in Mexico and potentially improve her overall condition as well as shrinking her tumours. At the time of going to press (Wednesday afternoon) the fund had already reached just over €73000 with over 2000 people donating to the fund including a very generous €1000 donation from one of Sonia’s former clubs Rock Celtic FC. Another of Sonia’s former clubs Castletown Belles are also doing all they can to help out with club coach Andrew Gallagher stating that this year’s registration fees will automatically bypass the club and go to a fund for Sonia Hoey.

“It’s something small we are doing. It’s a very sad story and we are trying to do all we can. Club membership for the year costs €10 for parents and guardians.

The money will go straight into the fund. It’s something extra we can do,” he added.

Sonia is a 42-year-old, well-known sportsperson who was originally diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer in February 2019.

According to Sonia’s gofundme page, she underwent an aggressive treatment of radiation and chemotherapy every day for two months.

She was almost a year in remission when she got the sad news for the second time in July 2020, incurable cervical cancer had returned

and this time it has spread to her lungs.

Sonia has received the maximum dose of radiation, so she can’t undergo this treatment again. She is hoping to undergo treatment at the Hope for Cancer clinic in Mexico instead.

She won the FAI Cup Final with Dundalk FC also in 2005 scoring the winning goal against Peamount Utd and she was also the captain of the DkIT football college team that won the Interprovincial college tournament.

The supremely talented

athlete from Ard Easmuinn also played Gaelic with her local club Dowdallshill and with Louth’s women’s team.

More recently she was the first player to take her place in the Castletown Belles FC hall of fame. Dundalk FC and LGFA are among the many local sporting organisations supporting the fundraiser for Sonia.

He added: “In total it will cost €12 million to build the stadium. We aim to raise €4m ourselves, the rest will come from the Government and sports grants in September.

“We are setting up a finance committee to see the best way of getting money.

We have made a start and now we have started it, we will finish it. There’s light at the end of the tunnel.”

Cost of local council in 2020 was €768,562.65 The cost of local government in Louth for 2020 was €768,562.65 which represents the sum total of representational payments and expenses received by councillors around the county. The figures which were released by Louth County Council show that each councillor who was in situ for the whole year received a total €18,054.10 as well as expenses including €1000 for being part of the Municipal District Committee, ad hoc expenses, phone and broadband, public liability, LAMA (Local Authority Members Association), conference expenses, border region forum and other meeting expenses, training expenses and foreign travel. There were also extra allowances for the chairperson and vice-chair of Louth County Council as well as those who were chairing SPC and Municipal District meetings.

Dolores Minogue was the highest earner in 2020 with the Ardee based Fine Gael councillor receiving a total of

€37,279.05 in payments and expenses before tax. Those payments included an extra €11666.64 for holding the position of chairperson for half of the year as well as Just behind her came former chairperson of Louth County Council Liam Reilly who earned €35,913.70 during 2020, again before tax including a partial chairpersons allowance of €8,333.36 for chairing the council between January and June in 2020. The council is made up of 29 members but the 2020 expenses list contains 33 names with the likes of Erin McGreehan (left council for Senate), John McGahon (left council for Senate), Paul Bell (left council for labour court role) and Ruairí O’Murchú (elected TD in general Election) being replaced at various stages over the year. The 2020 payments and expenses total of €768,562.65 was slightly up on the total payments and expenses issued in 2019 which came to €755,667.18.

by Housing Minister Darragh o’Brien which gave remote meetings the same status in law as meetings that take place in a physical space.

“In responding to the Covid-19 pandemic, a priority has been to ensure that elected Council meetings can be convened during the ongoing pandemic in order that Councils are able to continue to exercise their necessary statutory functions while minimising the public health risk to councillors, staff and media/public attending. To assist this objective, an Order was made by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage on 20 October 2020 that gave remote meetings of Councils the same status in law as meetings that take place in a physical space for the purpose of votes

taken and decisions made,” explained the local authority.

“In relation to expenses, a Councillors’ Annual Expenses Allowance is a composite allowance made up of a number of different elements, one of which is a payment devised from a formula which is based on attendance at a notional number of council meetings every year, but which also takes into account the travel a councillor is required to do in his/her electoral area in fulfilling the role of community representative and other travel carried out in their capacity as a member of the council.

“The applicable 2014 expenses regulations provide a basis for expenses payments to be made to members for “participation in relevant statutory meetings, as per the definition of ‘attendance’ in the 2014 Regulations: ‘attendance’ means: participation in the business of such meeting as a member of the relevant authority,” concluded the statement.

Fatal road traffic accident in Richardstown, Dunleer Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision involving three cars that occurred on the Ardee Link Road, just off the M1 at Richardstown, Dunleer on Tuesday morning at approximately 8.10a.m.

54 year old Michael

McMahon from Greenacres, Dundalk was fatally injured when his car collided into a second vehicle. His body was taken to the Mortuary in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where a post mortem wias due to take place.

The male driver of the second vehicle was 35 year old Adam Wilson from Gortin, Co. Tyrone who was also fatally injured. His body was also removed to the mortuary in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. The passenger of the second

car was removed from the scene to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda to be treated for his non-life threatening injuries.

The car also struck a third vehicle and the driver of the car was removed to Our Lady of Lourdes

Hospital, Drogheda with non-life threatening injuries.

The Garda Forensic Collision investigators are currently at scene.

The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place.

are appealing for any witnesses or for anyone with information to come forward. They are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dashcam) who were travelling on the M1, or on the Ardee Link Road at

Richardstown this morning, to make this footage available to Gardaí.

LOUTH Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) representative Catherine Flanaghan has said that teachers’ unions are giving the Government until the summer break to put teachers back on the

vaccine priority list.

According to Catherine, the teachers’ unions are hoping the Government will reconsider its decision to end the vaccine priority list that focused on vaccinating some professions.

“The decision was taken without consultation and at a time when the WHO has continued to prioritise teachers for vaccine rollout,” she said.

If the Government doesn’t reverse its deci-

sion to switch to a vaccine roll-out schedule led by age rather than occupation, there is a possibility of strike action next term.

“No strike action has been confirmed. It would require a high ballot of two

thirds of our members in favour of it for strike action to go ahead,” she said.

All three teacher unions debated a joint motion on Wednesday, April 7 demanding a reversal of the Government decision to re-

move vaccine prioritisation for teachers.

The INTO, TUI, and ASTI have asked their members to unite in their demand for vaccine prioritisation.

Catherine added: “I’ve

got a lot of texts from members in districts to say that they are very happy with the motion.“For teachers, the risk of contracting Covid-19 is significantly higher than for those who can work from home.”

More supports needed to help families affected by autism Jacinta Walsh from Autism Support Louth & Meath says there is a lot more to be done to support families of both children and adults affected by autism.

Speaking this week during Autism Awareness Month Jacinta said that while there are more education places available nowadays not a lot else has improved in relation to supports since the group was founded in 2002.

“Autism Support Louth & Meath are a self-help support group formed by parents of children with Autism in 2002 in order to provide an appropriate education for our children as there were no appropriate school places at the time. We support families from all over Louth and Meath and lobby TD’s and councillors looking to get some help and support for people with autism,” explained Jacinta.

“Our goal is simple: to improve the lives of those living on the autism spectrum and the families that love them. Unfortunately, parents are waiting up to two years and sometimes more to get their child assessed. We feel the government needs to do much more to ensure that people with autism can live their lives fully

and equally and we fight every day to try and make that happen,” stated Jacinta.

“We know it is a complex issue and we know that there are a lot more people being diagnosed with autism now than there were twenty years ago when we first started this group. There has been a huge increase in the demand for supports and unfortunately there is a shortage of qualified therapists and a high turnover of staff in this area. Like with everything there are areas around the country where there is adequate services but unfortunately there are many pockets where the services available are simply not good enough. We know there is a lot of very good people working in the HSE doing their very best under difficult circumstances but they need help and we will continue to lobby the government asking for more money to be put into this area to support both those with autism and their families,” concluded Jacinta.

McGreehan welcomes Cabinet’s approval of gender pay gap legislation Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed Cabinet’s approval to amend the Gender Pay Gap Information Bill and to introduce the strengthened Bill at Report Stage in Dáil Éireann.

Senator McGreehan commented, “This is very welcome news, and I raised this issue recently in the Seanad. How can a society thrive if women

and men are not paid at equal rates.

“We must create equity. Equity means recognising the glorious differences by creating fairness and a new normal so we can all achieve the same outcome. The gender pay gap is part of this inequity.

“In general, women in Ireland earn 14.4% less than their male counter-

parts. This is a critical issue and the pandemic has highlighted pay inequalities harshly. For example, in the earlier waves of job losses, female workers accounted for more than half of all pandemic unemployment payment, PUP, claims.

“I am delighted to see Government address this and rectify the gender pay gap.”

The Gender Pay Gap Information Bill was originally published in April 2019 and lapsed with the dissolution of the Dáil in 2020, before being restored to the Order Paper later that year.

Once implemented, the Gender Pay Gap Information Bill will require employers over a certain size to publish pay differences between female and

male employees, including any bonuses. The Bill provides a regulationmaking power to the Minister through which the detail of this can be specified.

The proposed Report Stage amendments will strengthen the Bill by: providing a more comprehensive definition of a public body to ensure that the provisions of the

Louth Student Receives Memorial Scholarship Award at Virtual Ceremony in DCU Louth student Darragh Cunningham was presented with a Memorial Scholarship award

by DCU at a virtual ceremony on Wednesday 10th February, where 22 students received awards named in honour of 14 individuals who have played a key role in the life of Dublin City University and in Irish society.

Darragh Cunningham, a former student of Bush Post Primary School Dundalk and a current first year Biomedical Engineering student at DCU, was presented with the Ger McDonnell Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship honours the memory of Ger McDonnell, a graduate of the DCU School of Engineering and the first Irish person to scale K2 when he reached the summit on 1st August 2008.

The Ger McDonnell Memorial Scholarship was created

by Ger’s friends and family in his memory, and supports a student studying engineering at DCU. Speaking at the event, Joe Quinsey, CEO of DCU Educational Trust stated: “This year we have awarded scholarships to 22 students whose talent and dedication are a tribute to those remembered through memorial scholarships at DCU. Ger McDonnell shone brightly in his own life

The 22 scholarship recipients were selected based on their talent and dedication but also according to specific criteria set by scholarship donors. Sixteen scholarships were presented to undergraduate students supported by DCU’s Access Programme which makes third level education accessible to students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds and provides financial, academic and personal supports to help students succeed in their studies. A further six scholarships were awarded to support students engaged in postgraduate research or study in fields as diverse as Law, Biotechnology, Marketing, Journalism, Music and Sport.

Parent’s leave and parent’s benefit extended There was some good news for parents and parents to be this week with the announcement that paid parental leave is to be extended from two to five weeks.

Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman T.D., and the Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys T.D made the announcement last Thursday which states that parents can now avail of three weeks addi-

tional Parent’s Leave and Parent’s Benefit.

New provisions now available under the Family Leave and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2021 include: An additional three weeks of Parent’s Leave and Parent’s Benefit are available to each parent of a child born or adopted on or after 01 November 2019 (bringing the total to five weeks); the period in which the leave and benefit can be taken is being extended so

that parents can now take the leave and avail of the benefit for up to two years from the birth or adoption of the child; Adoptive Leave and Benefit is being extended to male same sex couples; and Adoptive couples can now choose which of them will avail of Adoptive Leave, with Paternity Leave and Benefit being available for the other parent.

The Act provides working parents with an entitlement to an additional three weeks

of paid Parent’s Leave for each parent – bringing the total to five weeks paid leave, per parent. The period in which the leave can be taken is extended to the first two years after the birth or adoptive placement of a child.

The extension will allow parents to spend time with their child in the earliest years. It is non-transferrable between parents to ensure that both parents are encouraged and supported in taking time out from work

to spend time with their child.

The additional 3 weeks of Parent’s Leave and Parent’s Benefit is available to employees and the self-employed in respect of children born or adopted after 01 November 2019. Parent’s Benefit will be paid at the same rate as Maternity, Paternity and Adoptive benefits, which is €245 per week.

Adoptive Leave and Benefit is being extended to male same sex couples, fulfilling an important com-

mitment in the Programme for Government.

Adoptive parents are now provided with greater flexibility to decide which parent will avail of adoptive leave and benefit, with paternity leave and benefit available to the parent not availing of adoptive leave.

Commenting on the commencement of the Act, Minister O’Gorman said: “Supporting working parents to achieve a better work-life balance is something I and my Government

colleagues are committed to, so I am delighted that parents can now take up parent’s leave and parent’s benefit.

“The Family Leave Act modernises the law in relation to both adoptive leave and parent’s leave, reflecting the diversity of Irish families in 2021 and acknowledges that, for many Irish families, both parents are working. Importantly, it also encourages the sharing of parental responsibilities equally between couples.”

Local students shine at online enterprise awards

“The future of enterprise in Louth is looking really strong” said Thomas McEvoy of Louth’s Local Enterprise Office after last week’s Student Enterprise Finals.

Over 900 students from 19 local secondary schools took part in this year’s Student Enterprise Programme. A collaboration between LEO Louth and local schools, the online programme was delivered by co-ordinators Fionnuala Rogers, Francis Verling and Colm Finegan. Students learned how to create a business idea and then start and grow their own business.

SZE Stories specialises in books for children facing everyday issues. Their first book is for children who are being bullied and who are unsure

what to do about it. These young entrepreneurs set up a website, sold their books online and in book stores in Louth, Meath and Monaghan. They were even included in the Late Late Toy Show last Christmas. They are not just superb entrepreneurs but they’ve also got great heart, donating half of their net profit to SOSAD and Women’s Aid.” James Spain of De La

Salle, Dundalk was named winner of the Intermediate category. His business, Seasonal Crafts, sells unique hand-carved seasonal decorations and crafts from recycled wood.

The winner of the Junior category is Lucy Fowley from Scoil Ui Mhuire, Dunleer. Her enterprise, Sweet designs, offers handmade jewellery with beautiful pendants designed like gummy bears, butterfly’s incorporating birth stones and initials to give them their customised element.

The “My Entrepreneurial Journey” category was won by Mia McDermott with Reflex Design from St Louis Secondary School, Dundalk.

Open letter to business community promises brighter days ahead

An open letter to the local business community has focused on the quick recovery from economic exhaustion of COVID19 ahead of a potential return to normality later this year. The letter was written on behalf of the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, Department of Public Health, HSE North East and Louth County Council.

“On behalf of Dundalk’s business community, we are determined and focused on enabling the town to recover quickly and successfully

from the economic exhaustion of COVID-19.

This year has brought hope and optimism that the vaccination programme would lead to a recovery and a potential return to normality.

However, the resurgence of COVID-19 driven by the new strains has reasserted the transmissible nature of this virus. For the coming period, business as usual will not be possible for many businesses. Businesses of all sizes, in all sectors are struggling as are many of our public sector organi-

sations and practitioners in health, education and our emergency services.

This third wave has also compounded the physical and mental health of our public, including those who operate, own or work in businesses and organisations.

We recognise that there is COVID-19 ‘fatigue’, but we have to keep pushing forward.

We are collectively asking for businesses and their employees who remain open to re-double their efforts to help stop the spread of this virus,”

Businesses were advised to work from home where it is feasible and if they need to continue on site to enforce strong management of COVID-19 safe precautions in the workplace. It also advised workers to minimise contacts with each other and to wear face masks in communal areas.

The letter concluded by promising better times ahead for the local business community.

Marshes S.C. launch fundraising drive for Pieta House Marshes Shopping Centre, the north-east’s premier retail destination, has designed a range of free wellbeing initiatives in a fundraising drive for Pieta.

Conscious of the range of challenges facing people at this time, Marshes will raise funds for Pieta’s suicide and self-harm confidential, freeof-charge counselling services through the programmes.

Whilst the virtual events will be free to attend, donations will

be welcomed via registration through the Marshes Facebook page and website.

The first event is a Tea and Tai Chi morning on Wednesday, April 14 at 11.00 am.

Participants can register online and the first 50 to register will receive a free wellness pack in the post, which will include Pukka Chamomile Tea. They can then tune into a virtual Tai Chi class and learn a skill for life designed to support physical, emotional and

spiritual wellbeing.

“We have thought about how we can support customers in 2021 and have designed a range of free wellbeing initiatives,” said centre manager, Seán Farrell.

“Marshes is pleased to announce our support of Pieta’s suicide and self-harm confidential, free-of-charge counselling services through these programmes.

“We have recognised a role we can play in supporting

wellbeing as we prepare to come out of this challenging time.

RehabCare team up with DkIT for arts project

RehabCare in Dundalk have teamed up once again with DkIT to take part in a social care project under the direction of artist and lecturer Louisa Goss.

Louisa is using technology to teach out to the community as well as connecting students and people with intellectual disabilities through creative processes.

As a lecturer in DkIT she is currently working on the project with second year students on the BA (Hons) in Social Care course as well as a number of members of RehabCare.

According to Louisa the project involves members of the group writing stories about their favourite places and spaces as well as creating paper collag-

es, paintings and 3D models.

“We have been working alongside RehabCare for a number of years now and usually around January or February we begin a ten week project each year. This year given everything that is going on we decided to bring elements of the project online and the main objective of the project this year was to promote health and well-being through arts. The idea was that everybody would participate and explore places that they love going to either presently or in the past and create something about that place via the art of storytelling or art,” explained Louisa.

“People involved in the project have been busy creating images they love

weather they be seascapes or cityscapes and creating these images on paper using paint and 3d models to tell their story. We have 26 social care students and 8 members of RehabCare and when everybody have their projects completed we plan on having a virtual exhibition to show off all the work. As I say this is the first time we have tried doing a project like this online and so far the response has been great and the students and RehabCare members have been very involved and connecting with each other really well. The feedback has been very positive and all the participants have been interacting with each other and bouncing ideas between themselves,” stated Louisa.

Issue of Irish unity now a topic in all corners of Ireland—O’Murchú Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has used his online Easter address to say that unity is ‘a topic now in all corners of Ireland’ and to remember the 40th anniversary of the Hunger Strikes.

The Sinn Féin deputy gave an online speech on Easter Sunday, ahead of the party’s main online event, hosted by leader Mary Lou McDonald.

He recalled all those who had died from Covid-19 across the island and said that Ireland was ‘now entering a more hopeful phase’ because of vaccine roll-out.

The issue of unity is now front and centre, Deputy Ó Murchú said. He said: ‘We remember our republican friends, some from here and others who made their home here, who are

not with us now, but played significant roles in our struggle.

‘We continue to demand rights for all, north and south and make no apologies for this.

‘We will stand firm against the threat to the Irish Protocol and the madness of the British Conservative Party and the DUP. ‘We stand firm against the snide remarks, the side-

swiping from other parties in the 26 Counties who have yet to realise that by attacking us, they are only making us stronger.

‘They are only showing their own own fear.

‘Unity is now a topic in all corners of Ireland, across all sections of society. Republicans played a huge part in creating the conditions for peace and now are leading these con-

versations. We will seek a unity referendum and we plan to win it.

‘That is our focus, that is our core belief that remains constant and unwavering’.

And he highlighted that 2021 marks the fortieth anniversary of the deaths of ten men on Hunger Strike in 1981.

Bellurgan NS will gain two new classrooms and a 1 X SET room and ancillary and Ardee Community Senator John McGahon. School will receive 18 Gen-

eral classrooms, 1 Classroom SEN base, 1x HSCL, 1X Home Economics room, 1xArt room, 2 x Construction studies room.

Speaking on the announcement, Senator McGahon said “The purpose of the additoional accommodation scheme is to ensure

that essential classroom accommodation is available to cater for pupils enrolled each year and where the need cannot be met by the school’s existing accommodation.

Where the need for additional accommodation is likely to be for a finite pe-

riod of less than three years, a school may be given approval to rent temporary accommodation for this period. The rental contract is between the school authority and the rental company.

Louth Leader Partnership ideal partners for government in delivery of ‘our rural future’ strategy 2021-2025 Louth LEADER Partnership, members of The Irish Local Development Network (ILDN) have acknowledged the publication of the Government’s Rural Development Strategy – ‘Our Rural Future’. As one of Ireland’s 49 Local Development Companies (LDCs), Louth LEADER Partnership welcome the ambition of today’s policy announcement and its potential for the Louth area.

Commenting on the launch of ‘Our Rural Future’, CEO of Louth LEADER Partnership, Ciaran Reid said; “Local Development Companies such as ours have been pillars of Rural Development for over 30 years. Covid-19 and the rollout of the National Broadband plan provides an opportunity for a reimagining of the potential of Rural areas. The Strategy identifies the creation of ‘Local Master Plans’ to meet the long term needs of Rural areas. Local

Development Companies, with our track record in Rural Development and strategic planning will be central to this process.”

Referring to the role of LEADER in the Strategy, Frank O’Brien Chairperson of LLP said; “The LEADER Programme has been identified as a key measure in this plan. As the providers of LEADER across the Country we welcome the continued commitment to this critical programme and call on the Government to fully support LEADER through maximising EU funding and Exchequer co-funding in the years ahead. LEADER can provide the required development capacity and finance needed to deliver measures identified in the strategy. Furthermore LDCs have been at the forefront of the emerging Smart Village concept which will be a major element of the next round of EU programming

and an important element of any successful Rural Development approach.”

Concluding Ciaran Reid noted; “The role of Local Development Companies is interwoven throughout the strategy. As providers of employment support measures such as the Rural Social Scheme, Tús and Community Employment and the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance, as well as Outdoor Recreational and Walks measures, our LDCs will be vital partners in ensuring that the ambition of this plan is realised.

Animals on the road—what do you do?

Many Irish animals have made traffic headlines when they’ve wandered close to motorways and busy commuter routes during rush-hour. Our radio bulletins often star sheep, cattle, swans and dogs who’ve found themselves in a sticky situation. Some of our most popular tweets are ones concerning animals on the loose; a cow on the M50 will generally get a string of replies asking, ‘why don’t they moooove him?’. We’ll all probably come across an unexpected road-user at some stage, so it’s worth knowing what to do if or when that happens.

Drivers have a responsibility to share the road with other road-users, be it other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians or even animals.

The unpredictable nature of animals means you need to be extra vigilant if you spot one.

Wild animals are most active around sunrise, and between sunset and midnight. Take particular care in areas where animals might be present, such as scenic areas, woodlands, open fields, passing riding schools and in housing estates. Always be on alert when

you see either of these road signs, which signal that animals frequent the area: Slowing down is the most important thing you can do if you spot an animal on or near the road. Failing to reduce your speed could force you to suddenly brake or need to swerve, putting yourself and other road-users at risk. As well as protecting the animals themselves, remember that larger animals could cause you serious harm if you collide with them. Always slow your speed when overtaking horse-drawn vehicles and riders on horseback as well.

If you spot an animal at night through your full headlights, slow down and dip your beams. Full headlights can startle an animal, causing it to freeze – the last thing you want if they’re blocking your path. Sounding your horn is another useful way to oust a stray animal ahead as loud noises generally cause them to scarper with fright.

You may even have to stop to allow an animal to safely pass. In fact, the Rules of the Road states that if a person in charge of

animals signals you to stop, you must do so.

If you meet a stray animal on a motorway, only stop if the animal is directly blocking your path. Never get out of your vehicle on a motorway to attempt to move an animal. On all other routes, only leave your car to move an animal if you’re pulled in off the road and you’re sure it’s safe for you to do so.

Calling for help is the best way to ensure the safe removal of an animal from the road.

In general, the Gardaí are best placed to respond to calls about loose animals. If you’re on a motorway, you can call TII’s motorway incident emergency line at 0818 715 100.

You can also use one of the emergency phones located at 1.6km intervals along the hard shoulder. To give a precise location on a motorway, look out for location markers placed every 500m. You can also let the team at AA Roadwatch know, by tweeting us @aaroadwatch. We can then warn other road-users of the potential hazard. Remember, never use your phone to tweet or make a call while driving.

We must challenge the accepted ‘laddish’ behaviour; catcalling and groping is wrong – McGreehan Fianna Fáil Senator for Louth, Erin McGreehan, is calling for cat calling and groping to be stamped out through awareness, education and legislation.

Speaking in the Seanad, Senator McGreehan said, “I wish to congratulate the young women and girls in Maryfield College, Drumcondra, who along with Amárach Research conducted a study on how young girls and women are being intimidated by catcalling. They call for legislation and for this to be made illegal.

“The Seanad is mostly male. I am sure the Leader is very well aware of how intimidating unsolicited shouting, whether that be so-called compliments, whistling or whatever the case may be, can be to a young woman, or any woman, who is walking down the street.

“It is not the effect of the

One thinks of grown men whistling at young girls in school uniforms and how perverse that is when one steps back from it.

It leads into a domino effect in sexual behaviour and sexual assault and blaming the victim.”

During her speech in the Seanad, Senator McGreehan noted how she recently discussed a very personal issue on the Michael Reade Show on LMFM, Sena-

tor McGreehan added, “I raised a very personal issue about being physically and violently groped in a nightclub. By pure reflex, I threw my elbow back and pushed the person who did that. I was in pain and in shock, and who got in trouble? It was me.

“The bouncer came to me and said, “Less of that, lady, or you will be out.” I explained my issue and he told me to move on.

Therefore, I was the problem that night. This is continuing and repeated behaviour. It is an everyday occurrence, although obviously not now as nightclubs are not “everyday” anymore.

“We need awareness. We need to challenge the norms and be able to stand up and call it out.

When we do, however, we also need other people to say they will call it out with us. We need awareness and education, and we need to legislate.”
