A Dundalk teenager’s inspirational story has gone viral with his YouTube video since it was uploaded last Friday.

Eighteen-year-old Korey Callan Bolton from Belfry Drive was the target of bullies for years due to his weight issues which led to depression and thoughts of suicide. For years Korey would sit indoors comfort eating while playing computer games in his room.

At the age of 15, following encouragement from family members, Korey decided to tackle his problems head on and joined a gym.

According to Korey the results were almost instantaneous.

Tadhg’s dream debut for Ireland Dundalk Leader 8th February 2017

Local man Tadhg McElroy enjoyed a dream six nations debut on Friday evening scoring a try against Scotland in the Ireland U20s 20-19 victory in Glasgow.

Tadhg, who hails from O’Hanlon Park is a product of Dundalk Rugby Club having played at the Mill Road from under 7’s all the way up to 2015.

His performances for Dundalk’s underage teams soon made waves and he was headhunted by former Wales coach Mike Ruddock who brought him into the Lansdowne rugby club set up where he has been earning rave reviews.

Tadhg who plays as a hooker has been involved in Irish U18 and U19 squads before but this was his first cap for the U20’s.

His try came at a crucial time with Ireland losing 19-12, powering his way through the Scotland defence before diving over the line. According to Tadhg’s Dad Stanley the try was the icing on the cake of an already proud evening for the

whole family.

“We were all obviously very proud to see Tadgh line out for the U20s in the six nations. And the fact he got a try made it even more special. To be honest I wasn’t actually that surprised when I saw him go over as he tends to score quite a lot of tries when he plays.

But the fact it came in such a big game made it that much better and I know from talking to him after the game he was thrilled with how it all went. He said he was a bit nervous at the start of the game but he quickly settled into it and I thought he played pretty well,” stated Stanley.

“Since making the move to Lansdowne he has become a much more complete player which is only natural when you’re playing with and against some of the best young players in the country. He has come on leaps and bounds and his next aim is to try and break into the senior team.

He has played hooker ever since he lifted a rugby ball and he loves that position. He actually started

Ardee students reach national Math final FAILED NCT? Students from Ardee Community School took part in the Team Math competition

which has been a long running activity of the Irish Maths Teachers’ Association.

Team Math is a competition for teams of four students from Leaving Cert year with questions based on the leaving cert higher level course. Regional Rounds are held nationwide by local branches under common rules.

This year Ardee Com-

munity School entered two teams in the north east regional round, where they competed against other schools.

In a competition of 7 teams one of the teams emerged victorious!

Conor Myers, Raivo Ruikis, Shawni Dowdall and Patrick Cotter are now the holders of the IMTA north east shield and will progress to the national finals on

Dundalk made the long trip to Carlow for their first round game in the Towns Cup where they scored a comprehensive 37-10 win.

From kick off Dundalk showed no mercy to Carlow and kept them pinned in their own half and at the break had

built up a 20-0 lead.

Carlow scored the first ten points of the second half to reduce the gap but tries from Steen and McGee helped Dundalk to come out on top.

Next up in the second round is Enniscorthy at home on February 19.

Man admitted drink driving while banned from road A man who admitted years at Dundalk Disdrink driving while dis- trict Court.

Anthony Martin of qualified was banned from the road for six Shanmullagh, Hack-

ballscross, Dundalk, was observed at the Long Walk on June 13 last year at 4.10am

changing a tyre on a car. Fifteen minutes later they observed him driving but he failed to stop when signalled to do so.

He drove out the Armagh Rd at speeds of 160kph before crashing into a farm gate with the car ending

up on its roof. He fled but was captured by Gardai. A breath sample revealed that he was over the limit.

The court heard that Mr Martin had previously been convicted of drink driving and having no insurance, resulting in a three-year

ban in 2015.

Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that the 33-year-old self-employed man was aware that he shouldn’t have been on the road. She added that the drink driving reading was at the lower end of the scale, and that he apol-

ogised to Gardai.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that this was a serious offence given his previous record and the fact that he was disqualified at the time.

In relation to the drink driving he imposed a fine of €500 and a ban of six years.

American tourists have goods worth €10k stolen from car

AN American couple had personal belongings and electrical equipment to the value of €10,000 stolen from their hired car in the Carrickdale Hotel car park last Friday.

The couple parked their car in the car park at around 1:30pm on Friday afternoon before going for a short walk.

When they returned about fifteen minutes later they found the

rear window of the car had been smashed in and all their personal belongings, documents and electronic equipment had been taken. According to Gardai the equipment was worth in the region of €10,000.

Items which were stolen included cameras, microphones, headphones, tripods, optical devices, light maps as well as smaller

items such as travel adaptors and charging devices.

The couple were on holiday in Ireland and had hired a car at Dublin airport before travelling to Louth. Garda are currently looking at CCTV footage to try and find anybody acting suspiciously in the area.

If anybody has any information about this theft please contact Dundalk Garda station.

There was also a theft reported at Lios Dubh on the Armagh Road on February 3 where a laptop, Walkman and €200 were stolen between the hours of 10pm and 9am.

Meanwhile a major immigration checkpoint was set up on Monday by the National Bureau of Immigration just north of Dundalk near the Ballymascanlon roundabout.

Grandparents Day at Castletown

Castletown Girls’ School celebrated Grandparents’ Day, as part of Catholic Schools Week, by inviting the grandparents of 1st class in to a St. Brigid’s Cross-making session.

The grandparents showed their lucky grand-daughters how to make St. Brigid’s crosses and in return, the girls had a short prayer service and recited a poem in honour of grandparents.

The grandparents spoke about their experience of school and the differences and similarities with nowadays. The girls all agreed they’d rather be at school now than in their grandparents’ day. Pictured are Lucy McManus with Caitríona, and Molly McEnteggart with Gerry.

Used children to commit offences

A man who was told he had committed a scandalous offence was sentenced to nine months in prison at Dundalk District Court.

Judge Flann Brennan stated that Charlie McDonagh of 102 Mullaharlin Park, Dublin Road, Dundalk, had acted in an appalling manner when he ‘used his own child and others to commit offences’ and his behaviour merited a custodial sentence.

The court heard that on August 16 last, Mr McDonagh entered Equipet at Dundalk Retail Park with five children. He took a jacket and forced it on to one

of the children while others took 28 pet accessories valued at €95 and left without paying. They got into a car and left.

The court heard that the jacket was recovered but the other items weren’t. A Garda stated that all the children involved appeared to be under the age of 12.

Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that her client accepted responsibility for his actions and was extremely embarrassed. The father of seven had money for compensation and witness expenses.

In evidence, Mr McDonagh stated that only one of the children was his and that the father

of the other four was also present.

He added that he wasn’t aware of what the children were doing but accepted that his child took items they shouldn’t have.

He explained that he put the coat in his child but forgot about it.

Ms Tiernan stated that her client, who had 37 previous convictions, had never done anything like this before and it was an isolated incident.

In imposing sentence Judge Brennan said the defendant had an appalling record. He fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal.

A whole host of Louth schools celebrated Safer Internet Day on February 1, an EU wide initiative to promote a safer Internet for all users, especially young people. This was the fourteenth year of the event and this year’s theme was called, ‘Be the Change: Unite for a Better Internet’.

Safer Internet Day aims to educate and raise awareness about protecting children online, so that they can responsibly enjoy the benefits of the internet.

Banned driver took a chance

A man who took a chance on driving his pregnant daughter to hospital while uninsured was disqualified for two years at Dundalk District Court.

Martin Smith of 39 Farndreg Est, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, was stopped

by Gardai on June 9 last year at 9.25pm on Quay St. He failed to produce his documents to Gardai.

Barrister, David Costello, stated that the 40-year-old father of three had recently become a grandfather and was expecting another grandchild. His 18-year-old daughter

Mr Costello added that the defendant was unemployed and that his children and grandchildren would be living at home with him.

The court also heard that Mr Smith had a previous conviction for no insurance and had previously been disqualified.

Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 fine and two-year ban in respect of the no insurance, and struck out related matters.

Eve honoured to act as Grand Woman is given Marshal for Dundalk parade a jail warning

Paralympic champion, Eve McCrystal has been named as this year’s Grand Marshal for the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade.

Jenkinstown native Eve helped put Dundalk on the map during the summer winning a gold and a silver at the Paralympic games in Rio in tandem with her partner Eve McCrystal will lead the Dundalk St Patrick’s Katie-George DunDay parade leavy.

St Patrick’s Day Parade Chairperson, David Minto said Eve’s acceptance of the Grand Marshal role in the Parade serves to highlight the importance of a TEAM spirit in Dundalk. ‘‘TEAM’ stands for Together Everyone Achieves More. Eve’s outstanding success in the cycling word is proof that TEAM works. And it’s not just confined to sport – everyday in Dundalk

the Grand Marshal car.

Everything I do, I do it for them so it will be nice to have them with me for this special occasion,” stated Eve. “It’s really lovely to have the support of my hometown behind me and the fact I was asked to be Grand Marshal is huge honour for me.

“I felt the support from Dundalk when I was in Rio and I have always got nothing but support from my hometown,” she added.

This is a big year for Eve with the Para Cycling World Championships in South Africa in the summer as the Irish National championships in June. Eve will also be gunning for Ireland’s Premier ladies road race as she takes part in Rás na mBan in September.

A Dundalk woman was warned that she will end up in jail if she doesn’t stop stealing after being given a 12 month suspended sentence.

Kathleen McDonagh, with an address at 2 Afton Drive, Greenacres, Dundalk, admitted stealing goods to the value of €13.50 from a shop on June 26 last year.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client had difficulties with accommodation and was now living in a local hotel with her three children aged 16, 14, and nine.

He added that she had been given a 12-month suspended sentence in Drogheda District Court in September last year, but this offence predated that sentence.

In imposing the sentence, Judge Flann Brennan warned Ms McDonagh that she had to stop stealing or she would end up in jail.

Illegal dumping An illegal dumping incident in Ravensdale Forest has been reported by a local councillor who claims that a letter containing a person’s name and address was amongst the items found amongst the rubbish.

Students to get vital First Aid training Students throughout Co Louth will benefit from first aid training thanks to a new initiative that has been introduced in secondary schools.

Louth Public Participation Network (PPN) have launched a first aid training initiative 5th Year and Transition Year students. The uptake has seen 13 Schools now involved, with 394 students participating.

The course will enable the students to be prepared to act in an emergency or possibly life-threatening situation. Knowing what to do, before an ambulance arrives, can be the difference between life and death. The learning acquired will be of benefit to the students at home, school, sports grounds, within the wider community as well as in their future workplace.

First Aid Training Course In Colaiste Ris Fifty Transition Year students were awarded certificates at the conclusion of the Louth Public Partnership Network (PPN) Secretariat First Aid training course held in the school last week. The course was directed by paramedic Brendan Matthews and was funded by Louth PPN. Among those who received their certificates in First Aid were Áine O’Hagan, Emma Dunne, Éamonn Ó Coigligh, Alex McGuinness and Fergal Mulholland.

First aid training provides for safer practices, which in turn assists in reducing further injury to those affected by accident or sudden illness.

The small time invested in developing the skills and knowledge will produce a lifetime of advantages for the participants.

Enhanced communication, team working and leadership skills among the students is another benefit from the training programme.

Louth PPN is the first county to take this initiative and it plans to support all PPN Secretariats around the country to introduce it in schools and to seek its inclusion on the national curriculum.

Anthony McArdle from the PPN secretariat was a key player in introducing this initiative to

local schools and he is delighted with the response so far to the training course.

“The feedback so far has been extraordinarily positive and both students and teachers alike have got a lot out of it so far which is great. I thought that maybe the students might see this as something of a chore but they’ve been very enthusiastic which is fantastic to see.” stated Anthony.

“The training course is a full day and students are thought how to do things like cardiac resuscitation, mouth to mouth, Heimlich manoeuvre, recognition of stroke, burns and bandaging. The day is broken up into practical and theory and training is done by local paramedics,” he added.

More top acts for Spirit Store February promises to be another busy month at The Spirit Store with another series of top acts lined up to perform.

Korey, the grandson of Dundalk FC legend Francie Callan, eventually lost 60 pound in just three and a half months and re-

cently he decided to share his story via YouTube to try and inspire other people who may be in the same boat he was.

“I made a short video telling my story and I suppose the reason I did it was to try and reach out to people who are in a similar place to where I was. I know how lonely and horrible it can be when you feel you are worthless and have nothing to offer and I just wanted to reach out and let people know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“If I can turn my life around anybody can. The response to the video has been amazing so far and I’m overwhelmed at all the messages support I’ve received. I hope my video can help and inspire somebody to better themselves as that is the only reason I’m putting my story out there,” stated Korey.
