By Paul Byrne Dundalk FC are all set for another European adventure following last Thursday’s thrilling 3-1 victory over Faroe Island side KI. The win saw Dundalk qualify for the group stages of the Europa League for just the second time in the club’s history and the following day they were drawn in group where they will face Arsenal, FC Molde and Rapid Vienna.

When Filippo Giovagnoli was brought into the club in August to replace Vinny Perth the Italian was quoted as calling his trip to Ireland a ‘kamikaze mission’ but just five weeks later he and his assistant Giuseppe Rossi are the toast of the town after guiding the Lilywhites through three European matches to qualify for the Europa League.

A LOUTH girl who celebrated her First Holy Communion recently has donated €200 to Dundalk Dog Rescue.

Elisha Moore, aged nine, from Darver made her Communion in St Michael’s Church over the weekend.

Elisha’s mother, Mary said: “Her grandmother, Ann Moore, cofounded Dundalk Dog Rescue.

“Elisha is a big animal lover and has seen firsthand through Ann the work that the charity does.

Retaining the league may no longer be attainable but for Dundalk fans they can look forward to six successive weeks of Europa Cup action starting on the 22nd of October with a home match against Norwegian side Molde. Dundalk Dog Rescue aims to save the lives of dogs on the ‘put to sleep’ lists in pounds, to help rehabilitate and re-home them, and to promote responsible dog ownership.

According to Dundalk Dog Rescue, a stray dog in the pound has five days to be reclaimed or

re-homed (Control of Dogs Act, 1986).

A dog surrendered by its owners may be euthanised immediately.

Louth County Council does its best to re-home dogs but unfortunately due to the sheer volume of dogs entering the

pound many dogs are listed for euthanasia to accommodate new arrivals.

Dundalk Dog Rescue does not have its own premises so it minds the dogs until a place can be found for them in a re-homing rescue.

The charity relies heavily on people to

help by fostering dogs until the next stage of their journey begins.

If Dundalk Dog Rescue cannot find a fosterer it pays for kennelling. The rescue runs up huge costs each month, with most of its funds being used for kennelling, transport and vet bills.

Daragh’s parents raise money for autism unit in Realt na Mara THE parents of a Dundalk boy who sadly passed away have presented a cheque for over €5,000 to Realt na Mara national school.

Colleen and Paul McNally from the Avenue Road presented the cheque to the Mill Street national school

following their fundraiser in aid of its centre for autism on Friday, October 2.

The donation also included money raised at a night in Oriel Park early on this year. This event was organised by Christine Lee. The money raised

will go towards resources for ‘Daragh’s Room’ which was named in his memory.

“Daragh has touched the hearts of a lot of people but for us Realt na Mara did everything for Daragh and doing this fundraiser is our way of helping kids in

the unit,” said Colleen.

“Daragh loved going to this school.

They were his second family and Paul and I will always be grateful for what they did for

Daragh.”

Daragh passed away last October after becoming ill and would have celebrated his 12th birthday on Thursday, October 1.

Realt na Mara Deputy Principal Adele Clune said: “It’s a very special day for us to remember Daragh who passed away a year ago.

“On behalf of staff and students of Realt na Mara we’d like to thank Paul and Colleen for organising this fundraiser for Daragh’s first heavenly birthday

and donating this money to the ASD classes.

“This money will go towards equipment for our new sensory room and will benefit all our ASD students.”

A LOUTH TD has described the ‘Dying with Dignity Bill’ as “important legislation that needs to be closely looked at”.

“The conversation is starting about it, which I welcome,” said Deputy Ruairi O Murchu.

“It is likely that the legislation will be allowed through second stage to committee stage where we can have the benefit of expert analysis and opinion.

“Every and all safeguards and checks need to be included in any bill before it is passed into law. It is a complex issue that requires careful and thoughtful consideration.”

Campaigner Vicky Phelan has appealed to politicians to support the ‘Dying with Dignity Bill’ which was reintroduced in the Dáil on Tuesday, September 15.

At a press conference the previous day, Ms Phelan said people with terminal illnesses should be given the choice to die.

In her appeal to TDs, Ms Phelan said: “I would ask all of them, all 160 TDs to put their opinions to one side and try to put themselves in my shoes, as a young mother with young children.”

Following the announcement on Wednesday 30th September regarding errors found in the Calculated Grades process, the Minister for Education and Skills, Norma Foley has requested the State Examinations Commission (SEC) to extend the entry process deadline for candidates to enter for the Leaving Certificate 2020 – November written examinations.

The Entry process for Leaving Certificate candidates, using the Calculated Grades Student Portal available at www.examinations. ie and at Gov.ie/leavingcertificate opened at 9am on Monday 28th

September and was due to close at 5pm today, Friday 2nd October 2020.

The closing date for the entry process for candidates to enter for the Leaving Certificate 2020 has been extended and the student portal will remain open until Wednesday 7th October 2020 at 5 pm.

The deadline has also been extended for Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) candidates who may enter for examinations by emailing LCAexams2020@examinations.ie.

Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied candidates will be notified today by email.

Gardaí launch Operation Thor to tackle anticipated increase of burglaries

Gardaí are encouraging members of the public to be more vigilant and to take further steps to protect homes and properties from burglaries.

The overall number of burglaries reported so far this year has fallen significantly as a result of lockdown restrictions, however, wintertime usually

sees the number increase.

Gardaí commenced the winter phase of ‘Operation Thor’ last week and the operation is due to continue until the end of March next year.

Operation Thor is designed to tackle the anticipated increase in the number of burglaries and associated criminal activity that usually occur in winter months by undertaking

targeted enforcement and preventative activity.

Gardaí say during the Operation Thor Winter Phase they plan to increase their visibility, conduct regular checkpoints, and target burglary ‘hot-spots’.

They are also seeking to increase community education and awareness around burglaries.

They say that some of the steps the public can take to ensure homes are properly protected include: Turn on some lights Use timer switches Lock all doors and windows Use an alarm Store keys away from windows Don’t keep large amounts of cash or jewellery in the house.

Dundalk Ladies have a long association of supporting and hosting the annual ladies team event in aid of the North Louth Hospice and Home Care.

This association goes back many years, when some of the lady members were, and still are, involved in the day to day management of services provided to the community.

The North Louth Hospice provides an invaluable service to the people in the North East and all funds raised are retained locally. They

Fine Gael Senator John McGahon has called for much closer cross-border cooperation in the fight against Covid-19 as Northern Ireland recorded 934 new cases yesterday, the highest number to date.

Senator McGahon said, “Covid does not recognise borders and it’s extremely important that all lines of communication are open between North and South. From Dundalk to Donegal, the border is seamless with the social fabric of its communities intertwined.

“We really need to increase these lines of communications so all potential Covid cases are identified and proper procedures followed. It is vital that

we do this as quickly as possible as we face into Winter.

“Covid does not respect borders or boundaries and as a result we really need to make sure we have covered every single aspect of cross border co-operation, whether that’s with contact tracing, increased communication between NPHET and the NHS, or ensuring that the restrictions on both sides of the border are clearly communicated.

“There has to be a level playing field on both sides of the border in terms of a joint response to Covid. Essentially, I want to call for a stepping up of all cross-border cooperation in all areas.

“People go to restaurants across the border, they go

shopping, they socialise. They go to sporting events or their workplaces across border.

This will require an all-Island effort to bring the virus under control.

“The infection rate in Northern Ireland is five times higher than in the Republic.

It’s not just the Derry/Strabane area where high infections are occurring, but right across the border area.

“The only way we can attempt to bring Covid under control in border areas is to really increase the cooperation between the two administrations on this island and take a full all island approach to tackling Covid, particularly in the border region,” Senator Senator John McGahon.

Eve becomes National Time Trial Champion Eve McCrystal has had plenty of glory days in cycling but last weekend’s victory at the National Time Trial Championships in Limerick will go down as one of her best days in the saddle. Eve is probably best known for her remarkable exploits on the international stage where she has won multiple gold medals at the world championships and Paralympics in tandem events as a sighted pilot for blind cyclist Katie George Dunleavy.

However, she has also enjoyed plenty of success riding solo including winning the elite national championships in 2018.

However, one race which had eluded her was the national time trial championships where she had captured a couple of silver and three bronze in previous years each

time just missing out on gold. According to the Ravensdale native the omission of that national time trial gold medal from her collection was something that had been really bugging her before she put it right last weekend.

“I have always loved the time trial event and I knew I was pretty decent at it so it was really beginning to bug me that I had never managed to win gold in the event. I have come close a few times over the years but there’s some really talented riders in Ireland and they kept on just getting the better of me which was a bit annoying,” laughs Eve. “I was hopeful coming into the race on Thursday but I knew that I had a big challenge on my hands with Kelly Mur-

phy in the race. I had raced against her a few times during lockdown and generally she was getting the better of me by a few seconds each time. I knew I felt in good shape coming into the race but I felt if I was going to win it would be very tight,” explained Eve. The Strata 3-VeloRevolution rider clocked a time of 29:01 on the 22.4km course which ended up being a massive 21 seconds better than her main rival Murphy (Storey Racing) who was attempting to win the race for the third year in succession. The margin of victory initially shocked Eve but having had a few days to reflect on her victory she credits her coach for getting her mentally ready for the challenge.

St Vincent’s Secondary School has once again been named a Centre of Excellence in the provision of the Microsoft Office Specialist Programme. This recognised St Vincent’s as one of the top 25 centres in Ireland and the UK offering the MOS programme. “I was in shock first of all to find out I had won and then in even bigger shock when I saw the margin of victory. But having had a few days to reflect I have to give credit to my coach who got me to the start line in great shape and ready to compete. Everything went perfectly for me on the day and believe me that does not always happen at the top level of sports.

I will take a break now for a week to ten days and then the hard work really starts as myself and Katie George start getting ready for the Tokyo Olympics next summer,” stated Eve. As well as picking up the gold in the national time-trial Eve also won gold in the Masters event, team event and silver in the road race.

Coláiste Chú Chulainn helps build pilot Covid19 inspection model Coláiste Chú Chulainn in Dundalk was part of a pilot project with the Department of Education and Skills to support the return of schools safely.

Principal Thomas Sharkey outlined the project: “School was approached by the Department of Education and Skills to help them devise a new model of

inspection visit. The priority for everybody in education is to have all students safe and knowing they are safe.

“The inspection model meant that DES inspectors looked at 35 elements of school, from the presence of sanitisers, class routines, procedures around unexpected illnesses and the correct collation of data.

“We have worked hard over the last number of years. The Department has made additional finance, supplies and staff available to all schools.

We demonstrated the correct utilisation of these resources.

“The inspection took place on the 28th September and the inspectors report issued the following day. As

principal of Coláiste Chú Chulainn, I am proud of all our students and staff for all that is being done to keep everybody safe.

We have published the inspector’s report on our school website www.colaistecc.ie so other schools can follow the model we used and to ensure public confidence in the work of all schools.”

DkIT Steps Up Drive Towards Becoming A Technological University Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has affirmed its commitment towards becoming a Technological University (TU) by establishing a new steering committee aimed at accelerating the institute’s trajectory towards TU status.

The high-level steering committee has been established on foot of a recent decision by the DkIT Governing Body to commit to a new three-year development pathway with the Higher Education Authority (HEA) in progression towards and realisation of established TU status.

The primary goal of this structured development pathway is to boost the institute’s readiness to become a TU through the implementation of a series of targeted work-packages which align with national policy on this issue. This includes: Meeting the 4% TU target for the number of postgraduate research stu-

dents at levels 9 and 10; Ensuring 45% of academic staff possess a level 10 or equivalent professional qualification; Increasing the competitiveness and sustainability of the research agenda through dedicated support structures; Enriching the learner experience through the implementation of digital teaching and learning infrastructure; Improving the Further Education (FE) to Higher Education (HE) progression possibilities for our region, thereby opening up HE to a larger proportion of our region’s population; Speaking today, Chair of the DkIT Governing Body, Paddy Malone said, “After a period of extensive consultation with internal and external stakeholders, the DkIT Governing Body is pleased to confirm that the institute will now proceed with a structured development pathway, in conjunction with the HEA, towards realising TU designa-

tion. The agreed development plan will enable the institute to improve quality measures and conduct vital capacity building across key areas such as research & innovation, student experience, teaching & learning and industry engagement. Ultimately it will boost the institute’s eligibility to become a TU over the lifetime of the pathway.”

“Over the course of the past year, management within the institute have engaged with potential TU consortia partners within the sector to explore opportunities for future collaboration.

While this option remains open, the institute will now focus on the delivery of the new development plan and we are confident that this is the best approach to fast-track its pathway to TU designation.”

Also speaking today, DkIT President, Michael Mulvey added: “As outlined in our recently published Strategic Plan 2020-22, DkIT is

firmly committed to becoming a TU. This year we celebrate our 50th year as the leading higher education provider in our region and we see TU designation as a natural evolution of our organisation. It is also crucial for continued social, economic and cultural development of North East South Ulster. We continue to prioritise work plans to accelerate this process and we are pleased to establish a new and fully representative management committee to oversee this progression.”

Like other higher education providers nationwide, DkIT recently submitted an application for a €90 million fund (over 3 years) from the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, to be allocated by the HEA, to assist the development and progression of technological universities. The institute expects to learn the outcome of this funding application over the coming weeks.

County moves to Level 3 along with rest of country The Government on Monday decided that all counties will join Donegal and Dublin in Level 3 of the Living with Covid strategy for the next three weeks until October 27.

The priority under Level Three is to keep schools, early learning and childcare services open and to minimise disruption in the workforce.

People are asked to reduce the number of people they meet to a minimum and to not travel outside of their region.

A number of services will be moved online and some businesses will be closed, such as museums and other indoor cultural venues. Additional restrictions will apply to restaurants and pubs.

Gatherings For gatherings in a home or garden, visitors from one other household or your own household only are permitted, with a maximum of six people. In other settings, no social or family gatherings should take place.

For weddings, up to 25 guests can attend a ceremony and reception.

Religious services must move online with places of worship remaining open for private prayer.

Funerals can be attended by up to 25 mourners.

Organised indoor gatherings such as events in theatres, cinemas, arts events, business events, training events or conferences, are classed as “controlled”

environments with a named organiser, owner or manager. They should not take place.

Organised outdoor gatherings such as outdoor arts events and training events with a named organiser, owner or manager can take place with up to 15 people.

Businesses and services Museums, galleries and other cultural attractions must all be closed. Libraries will be available for e-services and call and collect.

Bars, cafes, restaurants and wet pubs can remain open for outdoor dining with a maximum of 15 people and takeaways only. Nightclubs, discos and casinos will remain closed.

Hotels and accommodation can remain open but services will be limited to residents.

Retail and services such as hairdressers, beauticians and barbers can remain open with protective measures in place and the use of face coverings.

Daily life Restrictions on domestic travel are included in Level Three as people are asked to stay in their county apart from work, education and other essential purposes.

Working from home should take place unless it is absolutely necessary to attend in person.

Schools and childcare services can remain open with protective measures.

Higher and adult education such as universities must escalate protective measures and limit congregation as far as possible.

On public transport, face coverings must be worn, capacity must be limited to 50 per cent, and the service should be used for essential workers and purposes only.

Those aged over 70 and the medically vulnerable should “exercise judgement” regarding the extent to which they engage with others and in activities outside home, with specific guidance set to be provided.

Nursing and care home visits are suspended aside from critical and compassionate circumstances.

Sports Outdoor non-contact training can take place in pods of up to 15, with exemptions for professional, inter-county and senior club championship teams.

Indoor training can only be undertaken by individuals, with no exercise or dance classes.

No matches and events can take place, with exemptions for professional, elite, inter-country, club championships and horse-racing taking place behind closed doors. The GAA has voluntarily suspended all club games with immediate effect until further notice.

Gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools can open with protective measures for individual training only.

Fitzpatrick to vote against ‘Dying with Dignity Bill’ Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick has stated that he will vote against the upcoming ‘Dying with Dignity Bill’ which was debated in the Dail last Thursday.

The bill which has been tabled by People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny aims to enable citizens to die with medical assistance if they are suffering from a terminal illness.

However, according to the Louth deputy he found it very sad that there was a debate taking place where ‘the Dail is spending time talking about introducing a law that would sanction the ending of people’s lives’.

“I greatly welcome the opportunity to participate in today’s debate. I strongly oppose the Bill before us. We in Ireland have just come through a seven-month period which has been appalling for many of our older and more vul-

nerable citizens. Tens of thousands of them have been confined to their homes and have seen a huge decline in their morale, health and quality of life as a result,” stated the independent TD. “Many have been cut off from their families and their communities. Hundreds of our older people were left isolated and alone in nursing homes and were in some cases left to die at the height of the coronavirus last April. The lack of planning and consideration for the needs of older, more vulnerable people contributed in no small way to this tragic loss of life. It is absolutely shocking that against this backdrop, when some of the most vulnerable people in our society turn on their radios these days, they are bombarded with media stories pushing the case for legalising assisted

suicide. At the very time when we should be encouraging people and putting supports in place to help the morale and well-being of people who have been through so much in recent months, the Dáil is spending time talking about introducing a law that would sanction the ending of people’s lives,” he added.

“The title of the Bill does not convey what the Bill would actually permit, which is euthanasia, plain and simple. Euthanasia is a deeply sensitive issue for many older people and those who are most vulnerable in our community. Today is the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. It is a very sad thing that we are debating a Bill about ending life rather than talking about assisting and enriching lives on such an important day,” concluded Deputy Fitzpatrick.

Hug A Bear For Hope

Community Activist Eugene Garvey has come up with an ingenious idea to raise funds for three suicide awareness/prevention charities, PIPS, SOSAD and Pieta House.

Covid has seen the mental health crisis in our country deepen even further with a number of local tragedies highlighting the problem and the woeful lack of resources needed to tackle it.

Dundalk man Mr Garvey said “I wanted to do something to help raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention and after talking to the three charities, came up with the ‘Hug A Bear’ campaign.

“The idea is that people take photos or videos of themselves hugging a teddy bear, maybe with a message, or not, saying who the hug is for, post it on social media tagging and challenging others to do likewise and donating to the ‘Hug a Bear’ eGoFundMe page.”

‘Hold Steady’ Creative Sparks 6th annual exhibition The Basement Gallery at An Táin Arts Centre is delighted to welcome another exciting exhibition by local, national and international talent with a selection of new works completed during Creative Spark’s residency programme 2019-2020. The exhibition will comprise of new work in the medium of printmaking, weaving, mixed media and painting. There will be a live launch on Friday 9th of October at 7pm on Facebook Live. ‘Hold Steady’ is Creative Spark’s sixth residency

programme exhibition at An Táin Arts Centre. Residency programmes are established to support artists through offering studio space, research time, resources and creative opportunities they may not otherwise have in their own studio or practice.

The artists are: Naoimh Larkin (Down); Annie June Callaghan (Fermanagh); Riley Waite (California); Jane Campbell (Louth); Niamh Hannaford and Tara Carroll (Dublin) To date the Creative Spark residency has support-

ed 35 artists over six years.

A supporting exhibition of work by Creative Spark Print Studio members will run concurrently in the gallery.

Local scout group do their bit for community A fundamental part of any scout group is being active citizens within their communities. Back in April, St. Patrick’s Scout Group, who are based on the Castletown Road in Dundalk made Easter cards which were then sent on to one of the local ‘Old folk’s homes’. Members of the groups leader team signed up to the Community Call which was co-ordinated by Louth County Council, and helped out where needed with elderly, vulnerable,

and cocooning residents of the town.

The Scout Group, in partnership with Louth Volunteer Centre and Safe Ireland took part in the CRiTiCALL initiative, which was set up to help families who have experienced domestic abuse.

Arrangements were made for scout leaders to be stationed at the local scouthall on the Castletown Road, and for a co-ordinated approach to donating essential household items,

vouchers and non-perishable food items.

Some members of the Rover section, (oldest youth section), donated blood to the Irish Blood Transfusion Service – a key service that needed to be maintained during the lockdown. Many of those that donated, did so for the first time.

Positive mental health is seen as an important element of a person’s wellbeing; and St. Patrick’s scout group recognised the

impact of the cancellation of this year’s Darkness into Light walk for Pieta House. Members of the Group have been heavily involved in assisting with these walks both in Dundalk and Dublin over the years; and indeed leader Sean Kelly was to the fore of bringing the event to Dundalk a number of years ago. The Group decided to organise an online Quarantine Quiz back in May and raised €1800 for Pieta House.

Record sales of hybrid and electric cars for Kia

Despite a challenging start to the year, sales of new electrified Kia models – hybrid, plugin hybrid and electric vehicles – grew by 20.8%, to 21,340 units.

Electrified models now account for almost a fifth of all new Kia sales in Europe (18.9% of all Kia Europe sales during the first quarter of

2020), up from 13.4% of Kia sales during the first three months of 2019.
