GREEN Party councillor Mark Dearey has called for the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Environment to demand a response from UK authorities following a Panorama exposé on Monday evening which highlighted a catalogue of safety concerns at the notorious Sellafield nuclear plant. During the programme a former senior manager in Sellafield outlined his worries about the plant not meeting minimum safety or staffing levels. Figures obtained by Panorama showed that between July 2012 and July 2013 there were 97 incidents where parts of the site had too few workers on shift. The report revealed that radioactive materials have been stored in degrading plastic bottles, that too few

staff operate the site, and that there is a real fear of a fire that would create “a plume of radiological waste that will go across western Europe.” Councillor Mark Dearey was a founding member of the STAD (Stop Thorpe Alliance Dundalk) campaign, and a plaintiff for 11 years in a court action to stop nuclear reprocessing at Sellafield said that he was not in the least surprised by the safety concerns raised in the programme although he did admit he was shocked after hearing the staffing deficits outlined in the programme. “Most of what I heard in the programme wasn’t news to me as we have been outlining the safety issues in Sellafield since I first got involved in the campaign over 20 years ago.
