The Irish Nurses and Midwives (INMO) Association last week called for Louth’s only Emergency Department (ED) in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, to be taken off call for a period of up to 48 hours due to overcrowding. The call came on Friday morning when it was reported that the emergency department was dangerously overcrowded. There were 40 admitted patients on trolleys on Friday morning and 15 people on trolleys on the Medical Assessment Unit. The 55 patients were awaiting an in-patient bed resulting in inhumane and degrading conditions for both patients
and staff said the INMO. There were 29 clinically discharged patients in the hospital that could not be discharged due to the unavailability of community beds or services. The HSE confirmed that due to the ‘exceptionally busy’ time the ED has been experiencing “hospital management invoked the hospitals full escalation protocol on July 31.” In a statement this week a HSE spokesperson said “Staff are working with senior clinicians to utilise all resources effectively. This means that the most critically ill patients are prioritised for treatment and available beds. As a result some patients may experience delays Continued on Page 2
