Carer shortage a major worry

The crisis facing the home care sector was laid bare in the Dáil this week by Sinn Fein TD Ruairi O’Murchú who raised the issue of the chronic lack of carers locally with Minister of State Mary Butler. According to Deputy O’Murchú a lack of bodies rather than a lack of money is making it very difficult for the HSE to deliver homecare packags for the elderly who wish to stay in their homes in Co. Louth. The Sinn Féin TD raised the issue of a chronic lack of carers and the impact it has on families in Louth during Topical Issues in the Dáil last week. He raised three local cases directly with Minister of State Mary Butler, who admitted the issue was not with money, but rather with getting staff. Deputy Ó Murchú highlighted how one 61-year-old woman from North Louth who is still in hospital awaiting the care package she needs following stroke. He said: ‘The family has also been absolutely clear from the outset that this woman will not go into a nursing home’. Annette, Bridie, Noeleen and Kathleen took part in the Cross Cooley Challenge last weekend. The event raised money for two local charities. Full Story on page 2. Continued on Page 2

Continued from Page 1 The Dundalk deputy also spoke about the case of a 93-year-old lady who spent a few days in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. She was discharged but a care plan was not put in place and no advice was provided to her daughter. She made contact with a district nurse who was very busy and it was not possible to get a meeting for about a week. And the third case involved a 74-year-old lady from North Louth with advanced dementia. She had secured home care but not sufficient care for the weekends. The situation is the same months later. He said: ‘We are dealing with a family whose members are exhaust-

ed and at their wits’ end. They are doing everything they can to try to give the required care to this lady on the weekends. ‘We are again talking about people doing their absolute best. It is, though, keeping an engine going with baling twine. It is not good enough. If we are talking about home care as an alternative to nursing home care, then we must offer people what is necessary’. Minister Butler replied that it is a ‘key priority’ for government. She said: ‘To advance this, the government is committed to establishing a new statutory scheme on home support. In July, I announced the selection of four sites to test a reformed model of service delivery, through the delivery of 230,000 hours of

home support, including CHO8. ‘This pilot will underpin the development of the statutory scheme for home support services and will be fully operational on 1 November. ‘A national home support office will also be established before the end of this year to support the testing of the reformed model of service delivery. ‘We have established a strategic workforce advisory group with the involvement of key stakeholders, including representatives from the sector, education and the Government. ‘The government is prioritising improving access to home support services for older people. An additional €150 million was allocated in budget 2021 to provide for 24 million hours of home support.

‘The difference now is that in other years, we did not have the funding. This year, I have the funding but we have a shortage of staff. ‘There is also another option that is taken up by very few families. It is in place since 2018, but it has not been spoken about very much. ‘There is an option for people to receive the funding allocation it would cost the HSE provide the package and for them to hire the staff themselves. ‘We are also looking at weekends. For most people, home care is not an issue from Monday to Friday, but Saturdays and Sundays are an issue. We are looking at providing financial support to people at the weekend and they might be able to get help in themselves’.

Fitzpatrick not impressed with government’s ‘housing for all’ plan Independent TD Peter Fitzpatrick has questioned the content of the government’s ‘Housing for all’ plan and has called for more action to help solve the housing crisis. According to Deputy Fitzpatrick a clear short term solution is available which is putting more emphasis on bringing vacant prop-

erties back into housing stock. “The housing issue has been a constant topic for debate during my time in Dáil Éireann. We have seen housing lists grow consistently over the past number of years, with each Government struggling to deal with a very serious issue. I have said many times

in this House that I will support any measures that will help tackle the housing problems we are currently experiencing. While I welcome the Government’s recent Housing for All announcement, I am not satisfied it will produce the result we need. Housing for All lists the following as its goals: to put afford-

ability at the heart of the housing system; to prioritise the increased supply of public, social and affordable homes; and to increase the supply of social housing by more than 50,000 units with an emphasis on new builds. “I could go on, but these goals are all aspirational. What we need is action, not as-

pirational statements. When I heard the Government was going to increase the supply of social housing by 50,000, with an emphasis on new builds, I despaired. Surely, I am not the only one who sees the many hundreds and thousands of vacant homes throughout the country. In my hometown of Dundalk,

R b

A D a n b o

Peter Fitzpatrick TD. one can walk down any street and find at least one vacant property. Why is the Government not putting more emphasis on bringing vacant properties back into the housing stock? Surely, this can be a short-term solution to the current housing crisis. Many of these vacant properties are in well-established residential areas where there are already communities, services and schools. It is a nobrainer to fund local authorities to get these vacant properties back into use for tenants. Louth County Council has been to the forefront in this regard and we are well regarded as leading the way. From speaking to officials, I know they could do much more if adequate funding was forthcoming from Government. There would be many benefits to this approach. “Vacant houses, which are often used as areas for antisocial behaviour, would be habitable again. It would improve the area and the quality of life for existing residents.

While I welcome the Government’s Housing for All plan, not enough resources are being put into getting vacant properties back into the housing stock. It is more important than ever that we have an accurate vacant property register. It would help identify vacant properties that are suitable to be brought back into the system. I have called for this previously and urge the Government to move on it. “When discussing housing, it is important to examine rent increases over recent years. Efforts by Government have clearly failed to prevent rent inflation. How can it be that in Dundalk someone will pay between €1,200 and €1,600 for a standard, three-bedroom home when servicing a mortgage on the same property would cost significantly less? There is something wrong somewhere when are in this situation. Surely we should support people who are currently paying these rents and who are quite clearly capable of serv-

i h O h 2 A o s icing a mortgage, yet cannot get one. u “While I support thel efforts of any party tob address the housing sit-s uation, it is quite clearL that we have a shortterm solution in con-l verting vacant prop-p erties into habitablem homes. What we needo now is a commitmentc from Government thatv it will make available the necessary funds tom local authorities to up-a grade vacant homes.i Every week, mothers,w fathers and childrens come into my constituency office looking for a home. They are walking down all the streets in Dundalk and Drogheda and seeing vacant properties. They cannot understand why they cannot get a home. Residents in lovely areas have vacant properties and all we see is antisocial behaviour. We can see drug takers and people on corners. It is wrong. Louth County Council is one of the leading authorities at the moment. It is pleading for the Minister to give it more resources so it can get homes for families,” he concluded.

Designers asked to submit proposals for new Chains of Office

Artists, craft workers, designers and jewellers are invited to submit proposals for design and fabrication of an appropriate Chain of Office for An Cathaoirleach, Louth County Council. The budget for the completed Chain of Office is up to a maximum of €7,500 inclusive of design fabrication, VAT and all other associated costs.

Radhika publishes book of short stories

A WOMAN living in Dundalk has published a book of short stories now available as an ebook on Amazon and other platforms. Radhika Iyer lives in Carlinn Court with her husband, Andrew O’Sullivan. They have two children, a 28-year-old son called Arjun, and a 21-yearold daughter called Akshara. Radhika, aged 55, used to work as an English language teacher but is currently the Resource Officer for the LMETB in Drogheda. She was born in Malaysia to migrant Indian parents. Her stories mainly explore themes of identity struggle, acceptance, and domestic violence. “I started writing more than 30 years ago. I entered a writing competition when I was younger and it was shortlisted,” she said.

Radhika Iyer. “It was then that I thought I can write. I continued writing but I stopped when I got married and had children. “Last year because of

the pandemic I had time to write again and I sent my work off to publishers.” Her book of 12 short stories is titled ‘Why are You Here?’. The stories

cover the harrowing results of a family scandal in Malaysia, an internal cultural identity struggle in Dubai, and an abusive marriage amplified by the lockdown in Ireland. In 2020 an excerpt of Radhika’s journal piece was aired on RTE Radio 1’s Arena show. An excerpt of an article she wrote about working and living in Ireland was featured in the Irish Times. A reflective piece was featured as part of the Keywords Podcast 5: Common Ground on RTE Radio1Extra and went on to be nominated for Best Short Feature in the 2020 IMRO Radio Awards. Development Plan ‘not good for rural Louth’ Louth County Council agreed to implement the new Louth County Development Plan 2021-2027 at a special meeting last Friday evening. The plan which sets out the policies required for the sustainable development of the County was voted through by councillors but not everybody was happy doing so. According to Sinn Féin Councillor Antóin Watters he had serious concerns as to what this plan will mean for his rural constituency of Cooley as do rural councillors across the 26 counties. “The Planning Regulator has tightened up on one-off rural housing and has put up so many obstacles to it that it is becoming nigh on impossible to build a house on your own land. “The National Development Plan which demands County Plans run alongside it following their guidelines, is no

Cllr Antoin Watters.

friend to the rural areas. This Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael/Green government has been accused of being against rural one-off housing and when you look at their National Plan and how they have tied the hands of County Councillors, it is hard to see how they can defend themselves against such an accusation.” Cllr Watters said “we were presented with a draft County Development Plan which was subsequently put out to consultation where we received almost 1000 submissions from interested parties, many from rural Louth. To give an example of how restrictive the draft was, if you

wanted to build a home on your family owned land then you had to own at least 5 hectares of land. I managed to get that reduced to just 1.5 hectares which other counties weren’t able to do. I also managed to get other qualifying criteria in as did many other councillors but it is still too restrictive on the issue of one-off housing. Cllr Watters also commented on the recently launched Fianna Fáil ‘Housing For All’ document. “It does nothing for rural Ireland and the Minister is talking about 5% of housing being in rural areas but it is obviously biased towards urban centres and when you take it in context with other Fianna Fáil/ Fine Gael policies, it is aspirational at best. “We have an aging population in rural Louth with little or no prospect of the next generation being able to reside on their homeland

and carry on the family farms or businesses. It is essential that local people be allowed to build a house in the area where they were born and reared. Changes to rural Louth has to come from the top, the Government. Louth Councillors and Louth County Council are working with their hands tied by the Planning Regulator and the Government and that’s not good enough. “There will be a review of this Plan in two years but unless something changes at government level, there is not much we can do here in Louth. Councillors were put in the inevitable position of either voting for the County Development Plan to reduce the devastating impact on rural Louth or to vote against the Plan and be left with a draconian restrictive Plan with none of our improvements in it. It was literally voting for the lesser of two evils.”

Louth Volunteer Leader Awards celebrating legendary leaders in our community Behind every great group of volunteers there is a great volunteer leader, someone who provides volunteers with a positive experience; coordinates and organises voluntary work so that the right work is being done in the right place for our community; the listening ear for volunteers when they face challenges. However, we rarely see or recognise this work that goes on behind the scenes and means our tidy towns, voluntary heritage, community services, men’s sheds and other groups keep going. Louth Volunteer Centre want to bring these local heroes out into the light and have just announced that they are once again accepting

nominations for their Louth Volunteer Leader Awards. Everyone who is nominated for an award will receive a thank you card and certificate and five nominees will be selected to receive the Louth Volunteer Leader of the Year Award, a beautiful piece commissioned from Sarah McKenna, a Ceramic artist based in Dundalk. The Louth Volunteer Centre team are also hoping, subject to restrictions, to hold a breakfast event on the 5th November to which nominees will be also be invited. “Everyone knows someone who leads volunteers in their community, they just might not realise it! Is there someone in your local

club who always makes sure the stewards have a hot cup of tea when they come in from the cold? Do you know someone who organises everyone to get out for the annual litter clean in your estate? Is there a staff member in a local community organisation who makes sure there are enough volunteers available on a helpline so that support is available for those who need it? We’d love for those people to be nominated for a Louth Volunteer Leader Award so that they can know that what they do is recognised and appreciated” said Gráinne Berrill, Manager of Louth Volunteer Centre. This is the second year of the Louth Vol-

Newry clinic aims to stop people feeling alone with intimate issues How do you go from property guru to intimate health expert in a few short steps? Newry woman, Olivia McVeigh, is well known on the Northern Ireland property scene but has recently diversified her business interests. “I have always been very outgoing, and I wasn’t afraid to speak about anything and was surprised at how many of my friends, colleagues, gym buddies, men and women were suffering with incontinence. “From planning what clothes they would wear in case of a leak, to really researching their route for the weekly shopping to include bathroom breaks, so many were silently living with stress and urge incontinence issues,” said Olivia. In 2019, Olivia travelled to Cambodia to take part in a trek to raise funds for the Southern Area Hospice. “I talked to people from all over the world on our trek, men and women and the topics ranged from children to lifestyle, sports to politics. One night a woman had an ‘accident’ when we were out walking. She was so embarrassed that she wanted to leave and go home. I was amazed at how many people opened up and started sharing their experience of incontinence. Men and women, of various ages, their

daily routines revolving around managing these issues, disturbed sleep, reduced intimate satisfaction and the need to be constantly close to a toilet.” On her return to Northern Ireland, Olivia started to research what was available for people who lived with incontinence. “There were a lot of invasive procedures, painful and time consuming with a lot of recovery time, or the alternative was bulky pads that ruined people’s confidence and were bad for the environment.” Then in early 2020, just as the coronavirus pandemic was really starting to worry people, Olivia came across a new technology that was non-invasive, was a walk-in walk out procedure with no down time

and reduced incontinence, of all kinds, in 95 percent of cases. “It was an electromagnetic chair that gave the internal pelvic muscles a really deep work out, in fact it was the equivalent of 11,000 Kegel exercises per 28-minute session and had no adverse environmental side effects or waste.” “Our treatment is not just medically approved by the FDA for the treatment of incontinence but also for vaginal laxity when the muscles may have become slack after childbirth, menopause or for many other reasons. We are also delighted that the treatment has now been approved by the FDA in Canada for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and other prostate problems in men.” The clinic is family run and is tucked away with a private entrance for a confidential and discreet experience. “With millions of people worldwide needing help with incontinence and intimate issues, it is hard to believe it is still so rarely talked about. We at Enola Private Clinic are hoping to change that and offer free phone consultations to answer any questions before someone would start a course of treatment, no-one needs to suffer incontinence alone.”

Glenmore AC shows the heart of the Cooley belongs to Inclusion

Glenmore Athletic Club is set in the heart of the Cooley Peninsula, its location is adjacent to Bush Post Primary school with the backdrop of Slieve Foye, its founding members all from the valley of Glenmore which is 5k from its athletics track base saw a need for athletics in this area back in 1969 where the main sport was GAA, although some of these men were also involved in coaching the local tug of war team. Their wish was to provide a sport inclusive of all and from that day

to this that has been the ethos of the club. Through the years the club has been involved in every aspect of this, namely, cross border athletics, engaging with athletes from all the divides of that time, as well as being the venue for Leinster Special Olympics. Glenmore’s facilities have been used regularly by the local Special Olympic clubs and in 2004 they were host to the Thai & Greek Special Olympic teams visiting Ireland. As part of their annual Credit Union races,

for the twelve primary schools in the catchment area, an additional needs event has always been included. The club also engaged in a Come & Try Day, where able bodied athletes competed together with athletes using wheelchairs. Glenmore AC’s current chairperson and coach Kenneth McBride, son of Michael McBride one of the founders, is a strong force in working with all. His dedication and coaching of David O Hare who is heading off to the Trigames early October has been a

priority for the last few months. David started training with Glenmore athletics club early 2020 and continued in 2021 after lockdown was eased. Glenmore athletics welcomed David from the start, the committee went out of their way to accommodate him. Kenneth McBride became David’s coach and although it was the first time training an athlete with Down syndrome, Kenneth made David feel part of the club and a worthy athlete. “Belief, determination and commitment is what

I see in this young athlete.” Kenneth describing it as a pleasure and humbling experience working with David. Over the months, a wonderful relationship and comradery formed between coach and athlete. Franco van Heerden, St Mary’s College Dundalk past pupil, joined as David’s training partner. Athletes with Down syndrome hugely depend on visual cues and emulating someone else’s actions, which made this partnership work well. The O’Hares cannot express their gratitude towards the club enough, Caroline, David’s mum, had this to say, “Glenmore has taken David to their hearts. There is such a lovely community feel about training at Glenmore as they all watched David train over last few months. You could feel their support and they have become his running

mates. Kenneth McBride a great chairman and fabulous coach, he had taught David not to just be an athlete but to be a competitor too. He has got the best out of David and it’s been a joy to watch their relationship grow.

At his final training the club presented David with a beautiful memento of Italy and gave him a lovely send off. Glenmore made us, as a family, feel welcome from the second David started training there.” The SUDS European Trigames 2021, a multi-

sport event, takes place in Ferrara, Italy, from 4-11 October - hosting teams with athletes with Down syndrome from over 17 countries in 8 sports. David will be travelling with his mother Caroline to Ferrara on the 3rd of October.

St Louis Dundalk’s 5th and 6th year Art students were the first students in the country be welcomed back to the National Gallery last week. In the first postlockdown visit for schools, the girls got the opportunity to see the new Jack B Yeats: Painting & Memory exhibition with teachers; Mr. Kilkenny, Ms. McEne-

Afterwards, the students had time to explore the rest of the Gallery building visiting famous paintings by Monet, Picasso, and Caravaggio to name a few! Art teacher Áine McEneaney was delighted to be offered the opportunity to get back to a live

gallery visit this year. ‘It has been so difficult not to be able to bring our students to see works of Art in real life. We were very lucky to be invited to visit the National Gallery so soon. The space felt incredibly safe and, with so few people in the building, our girls had a chance to really engage with the paintings.

Aidan all set to lose his locks for charity

Annaghminnon man Aidan Kerr will bid farewell to his mane of hair this weekend as he prepares to get it all shaved off for a very worthy cause. Aiden has already raised more than €4000 already ahead of the big fundraising evening in Smyths Bar in Tallanstown and is hoping to raise even more on Saturday evening during the ‘Head shave for Baldy Boots’ event with all money raised going to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit in Lourdes Hospital. According to Aidan he was moved to raise money for the unit having experienced at first hand the brilliant work they do. “My son Killian was born with problems in his lungs and the people in the NICU in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital saved his life. He had fluid on his lungs and they had to put him on a machine to help with his breathing but thankfully after a couple of weeks in the hospital he pulled through and both myself and

We had a fundraiser shortly after Killian’s first birthday for the NICU but we have decided to do another one now after the boys convinced me to get my hair shaved after it got a bit of length during lockdown,” explains Aidan. “Since we announced the fundraiser and put up the link for donations we have been inundated with support and

I would like to thank everybody who has supported our fundraiser. We have received support from all over the place and we are very grateful. It’s probably not a great time of the year to be shaving my hair off given the cold weather is coming in but sure it’s all for a good cause,” laughs Aidan. “We will be starting the event in Smyths Bar in Tallanstown at 8:30 sharp as we have to be out of the pub by 11:30 due to the current Covid regulations. I will be getting my head shaved and there will also be a couple of other lads getting their legs and back waxed. There will be sponsorship cards and buckets going around on the night as well as live music and food and anybody who wants to come along is more than welcome,” stated Aidan. Anybody who would like to support Aidan’s fundraiser can do so by visiting iFundraise.ie and by searching for Aidan Kerr. All funds go to the NICU in OLOL.

Pat narrowly misses out on world record Pat McMahon flew the flag for Ireland during last weekend’s world record attempt in Alton, Hampshire as hedgelayers from over 80 countries attempted to lay the most hedges in one day at the same place. Unfortunately, the world record attempt narrowly failed but according to Pat the event was very enjoyable and he hopes to go back next year to once again try and break the record. Pat was joined by hedgelayers from over 80 countries at the Rotherfield Estate in Alton, Hampshire where the world record attempt was being made while also raising money for the Air Ambulance and RABI. According to Pat the weekend was very enjoyable despite the failed attempt at breaking the world record. “The weather was good that Saturday morning at 22 degrees Celsius at Alton in Hampshire when we started laying the hazel hedge which

Pat McMahon at the charity hedge laying event in Alton, Hampshire.

was probably planted about twenty years previously. Flag up, tools out, safety gear on and away we went in search of the world record. “In the end we were just one metre short at the gap to enter the Guinness Book of Records. But sure look isn’t that it, we will try again next year,” laughed Pat. Pat is a member of the hedge laying association of Ireland and is one of the few practitioners left of the ancient art in the country. He is very determined to keep the art of hedge laying alive as he believes it is very im-

portant for both wildlife and the environment. “A laid hedge provides a stock proof barrier and a dense habitat for wildlife but most importantly it encourages new growth that starts a new life cycle of the hedge. Hedgelaying preserves the past and protects the future,” Pat explained. “I would like to thank the Hedgelaying Association of Ireland for giving me the opportunity to take part in this charity event which was well organised as regards travel, accommodation, dinner etc.

“Having grown up in the South Armagh/North Louth hills I learned early the simple gifts of nature and hard work. And while no longer in the spring of life I know what it means to be free. I am an Irish man with a lifelong interest in the traditional craft of hedge-laying. The National Hedgelaying Society is the only charity dedicated to maintaining the traditional skills of hedge-laying and encouraging the sympathetic management of hedgerows for wildlife and landscape,” stated Pat.
