A LOCAL couple have expressed their anger over a lack of communication from the council after workers from the local authority cut ivy from their wall last week without any notice given. Mary Jane Maguire and her partner David Juhasz had purposely let the ivy grow up their wall outside their house in Laurel Brook Gardens to stop their autistic daughter throwing things out on to the road.

According to Mary Jane the ivy had acted as a barrier be-

tween their wall and the road and had stopped her daughter Mary Kate throwing things on the road which she had done regularly before the ivy had grown up the wall.

“My thirteen-year old daughter is severely autistic and when she is out in the garden she has a habit of throwing things over the wall out on to the road. Myself and my partner David were concerned that she would hit a passer by with something and that is why we let the ivy grow up the wall.

The ivy acted as a barrier and it stopped Mary Kate throwing things out on to the road. last Tuesday without any prior notice somebody from louth County Council cut all the ivy off the wall and while doing so they damaged our trampoline and broke the top off the wall’s pillar.

now in fairness to them they did come back the next morning to fix the pillar but when i asked why they had not consulted us before cutting down the ivy i was told to contact the complaints department. Would it be too much to put a letter in our letterbox telling us they were planning on cutting down the ivy to allow us time to find something else to put up to stop Mary Kate throwing things out on the road. Are they even allowed to cut ivy down given the fact that this is our house?

“We were very angry to come home to see the ivy cut and the damage caused by the council worker to our wall and trampoline. We would ask in future that residents be consulted if a job like this has to be done. i understand that they have to clear the footpath from ivy but did they really have to cut it all away from the top of our wall and from

our property?,” asked Mary Jane.

When asked for a response by the Dundalk leader, louth County Council stated that theyhad received complaints about ivy encroaching on footpaths and had

acted on those complaints to provide a clear walking space.

“louth County Council received complaints about ivy encroaching on footpaths in The laurels area, and outdoor crews were sent

to clear same. Following requests from pedestrians using this footpath, ivy was also cut from a wall to provide clear walking space. As some of the ivy had grown under the capping of the wall, this came loose during

cutting, and repairs were carried out the following morning. A council representative called to the householder and explained why the ivy was cut. no damage was caused to property and capping was made good.”

Drogheda councillors vote to rescind Br Edmund Garvey’s freedom of the town

CounCillors of the Borough District of Drogheda have voted by a tight margin to rescind the freedom of the town to the former head of the Christian Brothers.

The vote to rescind the freedom of the town to Brother Edmund Garvey passed by five votes to four on Monday, september 4.

The decision to rescind the freedom of the town was made after a legal strategy was pursued which involved refusing to provide a nominee to act on behalf of the congregation, which then requires abuse victims to sue all members of the order.

labour Councillor Emma Cutlip put forward the following motion at Monday’s meeting:

“This council recog-

nises the importance of civic leadership in both the recognition of positive contributions to the fabric of Drogheda, but also the bearing of responsibility inherent in all positions of authority and leadership.

“The Council reiterates its complete opposition to the legal strategy first adopted by Edmund Garvey on behalf of the Christian Brothers order.

“in recognition of the detrimental impact this leadership choice has had on victims and survivors of clerical child

sex abuse, and as a mark of symbolic restorative justice, this council hereby declares that this council will no longer acknowledge Edmund Garvey as a Freeman of Drogheda.”

Councillors Michelle Hall (labour), Emma Cutlip (labour), Paddy McQuillan (independent), Joanna Byrne (sinn Fein) and Tom Cunningham (sinn Fein) voted in favour of the motion.

Mayor Eileen Tully (Fine Gael), Councillors James Byrne (Fianna Fail), Kevin Callan

(independent) and Declan Power (independent) voted against the motion.

Meanwhile, labour Councillor Pio smith was assent from the vote.

To top all of that off, a group of branch members performed under the banner of CCÉ Dún Dealgan on the gig rig on Bank Holiday Monday evening to a large crowd of onlookers. This performance involved music,

song and dance where branch members were joined on stage by young dancers from the scoil rince Mona ní rodaigh.

A number of branch members past and present are also recorded in the newly published book “on the night”, by Philip Duffy which was launched at the fleadh. it chronicles the story of the All ireland winning ceili bands from 1951 to 2021

Many branch members were involved with the siamsa and Táin Ceili bands.

An enrolment and information night for Craobh Dhún Dealgan which could potentially unearth future All ireland champions will take place in the oriel Centre (Dundalk Gaol), Carrick road, Dundalk on Monday, September 11th at 7pm.

‘Garda division merger plan must be dropped’ Ó Murchú

sinn Fein TD’s ruairí Ó Murchú and imelda Munster have written to Garda Commisioner Drew Harris expressing their concerns about a proposal from the Gardaí which would see a new divisional structure that would have CavanMonaghan joined with louth. The TD’s believe that louth must remain a standalone division given the fact that Dundalk and Drogheda are the state’s largest towns.

in the letter the two TD’s point to significant policing challenges in louth which would become even worse if Cavan and Monaghan are added to the area.

“A Choimisinéir, a chara, We write as TDs for the louth constituency, to raise concerns with you about the Garda operating Model proposed for the louth-Cavan-Monaghan areas.

it is strongly believed that this new operating area will be to the detriment of louth and that louth needs to be a stand-alone division.

There are compelling reasons why louth has to remain a standalone division and are based on the history of policing louth, the geography of the areas and the diversity of policing challenges that are faced.

Garda crime statistics would back up this view.

There are significant policing

challenges in louth, many of which are based on the fact that Drogheda and Dundalk are the state’s largest towns, with the busiest motorway in the country, north and south, running closely adjacent to both population centres.

In addition, there is a significant tourist destination right on the edge of louth, in Carlingford, which is frequently a call on Garda resources in louth, particularly on busy weekends.

Adding Cavan and Monaghan to this creates greater logistical difficulties and doesn’t make sense.

Even when the Department of Housing groups together the three counties for statistics related to homelessness, the figures are so skewed that most of the time, Cavan and Monaghan each report single figure homelessness statistics while louth reports treble digits for the same month.

The grouping of the three counties together for Garda divisional purposes ignores the everyday facts and also the reality of policing on the ground in louth, where part of the area will also include parts of east Meath, with significant population centres in this area too.

We do not need to tell anyone in An Garda siochana of the huge problems and challenges faced

by the community and Gardaí in Drogheda during the feud recently and the major resources that were required, and delivered, to bring it to an end.

To add two further counties to these significant policing needs in louth does not make sense.

While there have been commendable moves towards streamlining in the proposal, it is difficult to see how these proposals to join louth with Cavan and Monaghan are going to work.

it is a huge burden on a chief superintendent to be responsible for a region such as the one proposed. There are particular worries that the superintendent in charge of serious crime would be responsible for the entire region and not based in louth.

We are asking for the decision to be looked at again. We are aware that a number of changes proposed in the new policing model have been altered – for example Donegal is a stand-along division, with sligo-leitrim separated from the original proposal to join the three together.

We would be grateful if this request can be considered and if you can revert back to us at your earliest convenience, that would be appreciated.

Dundalk driving legend wins at silverstone

Roddy bounced back from a disappointing outing at Mondello last month as he took an excellent victory at the home of motorsport at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit recently.

Dundalk man noel is an experienced racing driver having raced in many different formula’s against some of the star names of World Motorsport, such as Eddie Irvine and Rubens Barrichello to name but two during his career.

according to noel he entered the Derek Bell Cup race in Silverstone late in the day in an attempt to get over his disappointing showing in the Mondello Classic last month.

“John Naylor, a leading figure in Irish Motorsport offered me his Formula Ford 2000 Van Diemen which is decked out in the retro “Ola” colour scheme of Tommy Byrne from 1981, to contest the Mondello Classic meeting in mid august, but I had two disappointing races. In race one I was taken out in an accident while challenging for the race lead, and in race two I had an electrical issue while sitting comfortably in second place, the only consolation was that I set the

fastest lap of the race,” explained noel.

“So after this disappointment I put in a late entry for the Silverstone Classic Festival meeting which is the second biggest car meeting to be held at Silverstone after the British Grand Prix, hoping for a change in luck.

“l was entered into the Derek Bell Cup races on Saturday and Sunday, however l was once again sidelined with an electrical issue in Saturday’s race, but took an excellent victory in Sunday’s race to win the Derek Bell Cup, Invitation Trophy.

“I had three very disappointing races in a row, and this victory was even sweeter as last October I suffered serious damage to my Formula 3 car at Silverstone when another driver rear ended me during a red flag, which has side-lined me from racing it this year,” stated noel.

iT’s been over a year since the two clubs joined together to offer lots of GAA sports from the one club.

na Piarsaigh football club were joined with Blackrock Hurling and Camogie club to offer training for Gaelic Football Mens/ladies, Hurling and Camogie . it has been so successful that they now have 12 football teams

FolloWinG the success of last year’s collection of poetry entitled ‘oriel observations’, local author seán Brannigan has begun work on a sequel which is titled oriel observations

Volume 2. The new book is scheduled to be published in october/november. A mixture of local, national, international, varied pieces, 52 in all. Below is one of the poems that seán has recently completed and which will feature in his new book.

Future is bright for Hybrid Martial a rts

HYBriD Martial Arts have been very active this year attending a range of national and international competitions from January with more on the cards for later this year.

national events we attended this year to date included the new Year open in January, sligo open in February and the national Championships in May where three national titles were won by three students.

international events we attended this year to date included Yokoso open in Amsterdam in March, scottish open in Glasgow in April and GB international open in July, taking a good haul of medals and trophies home from every event attended. We also hosted a seminar in April with World Champion Elijah Everill from the uK in Dundalk sports Centre which was partly sponsored by

louth sports Partnership.

Hybrid Martial Arts student, Yasmine singh has been competing at the Wako World Championships where she returned home to her proud clubmates with a bronze in point fighting=65kg and older cadet section. Yasmine has had some great success on the international circuit this year and everybody at Hybrid Martial Arts is very proud of her.

There are also lots of students who have graded successfully through the year enjoying their journey, meeting new people, gaining confidence and learning new skills. Hybrid Martial Arts will be open four years this December. The journey so far has been amazing. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the club and we look forward to the future, which looks extremely bright. newcomers welcome.

World suicide Prevention Day

SOSaD Dundalk are hosting a memorial event in the SOSaD Dundalk office garden (weather permitting) from 2pm5pm on the 10th September, 2023.

World Suicide Prevention Day is an annual

worldwide event held on the 10th of September to raise awareness of suicide and suicide prevention across the globe.

SOSaD Ireland are hosting memorial events in Cavan, Monaghan, Meath and louth to raise

awareness as well as give people an opportunity to commemorate and remember all those who have lost their lives. at the event, people will have an opportunity to paint a stone in memory of a loved one and light a

candle, while enjoying light refreshments. There will also be music on the day at 4pm courtesy of TJ Murphy. We, as a community in Dundalk have experienced a significant amount of tragic loss,

especially in very recent times. Suicide is prevalent in our locality and SOSaD are working to break the stigma surrounding suicide and provide crucial support to those in need.

There has been much public criticism recently of County Council’s policy of Rewilding, where they plant open spaces with wild flowers. Yes, wildflowers can be somewhat unsightly as they whither, as all flowers do in all our gardens, but that is how nature works. When wildflowers are in bloom they nurture a wide variety of pollinating insects, and when they die down the shelter hoards of small insects, slugs and frogs over winter. Then of course there is the much maligned ragworth which attracts hoards of pollinating insects.

Our Government pay farmers millions annually to increase the width of hedgerows on their land to encourage bio-diversity. Contrast this to householders and landowners who wilfully destroy miles of roadside verges every year by spraying them with weedkillers. I cannot understand how they prefer the withered look, that others moan about, to the lush green, that nature provides. I notice when they are carrying out this destruction, they wear masks, to protect them from the poisonous toxins they are releasing into the air. It doesn’t appear to bother them that the poisonous toxins they are spraying on the vegetation will eventually end up in the water, they, and everyone else will be drinking.

If the Government are serious about bio-diversity they will have to introduce legislation to curb the unnecessary use of weedkillers and insecticides. Spraying our roses with insecticides may kill green fly, but it will also kill all the other insects in the area.

This year there is a very noticeable absence of Greenfly, Ladybirds and Wasps. I realise the Wasps and Greenfly are not very popular, but they are very important links in the bio-diversity chain, and we all know what happens when a link is missing.

To those people who think that Global Warming is a myth, it’s time you took their heads out of the sand.

soME of the finest local musical talent will take to the stage in Toales this weekend for a special fundraising gig in aid of the north louth Hospice.

on sunday evening (September 10th), Toales on Crowe street will host the ‘Harmonious Hearts’ gig to celebrate the lives of the late Eileen Kirk and olive Traynor with all proceeds raised going directly to the north louth Hospice.

A spokesperson for Toales urged the people of Dundalk to come out on sunday evening to support the event while making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

THE national Youth Cycling Championships were due to be hosted by Cuchulainn Cycling Club on August 19th, however high winds and stormy conditions meant the race was not safe to run. The event was rescheduled to saturday last (september 2nd) in Derry and it proved to be a great outing for the club, especially in the under 15 girls. Here Ffionn Dolan sprinted home to an outstanding win and the club also won the team prize,

with Holly McCaffrey in 5th and Grace O`Rourke in 7th. This capped an outstanding season for all 3 and bodes well for the upcoming cyclo-cross season.

T H e Castle Players are looking for new members to join the cast of their Spring production of Agatha Christie’s thriller ‘The Hollow’.

The play will be directed by Pat McKenna and nigel Clinton, who were in the ‘Directors Chair’ for The Castle Players’ last production: ‘Say Cheese’, the play that sent audiences home smiling from An Táin last April.

If your secret wish is to tread the boards of An Táin stage, this is your chance! Don’t worry, you’ll be provided with all the support and guidance you need to overcome any reservations you may have.

Libraries Ireland has put together a free bag of books for primary school aged children that can be collected at any library branch in County Louth.

Fleet of new solar powered bins installed in Carlingford

Tidy Towns has installed a fleet of new solar powered compacting litter bins across the village of Carlingford.

local authority outdoor staff are in the process of fitting 12 new ‘Britebin Solar’ bins in the village.

The award winning solar powered bins which automatically compact waste are ideal for managing general and recycling waste.

The BriteBins, in combination with a unique software data management platform, allow louth County Council crews the ability to monitor real-time fill-levels across the litter bin fleet in Carlingford.

By gaining this data on waste being deposited, it further allows for proactive deployment of appropriate collection resources to only those Britebins requiring service.

The bins are contained in

a sealed, non-touch unit, and eliminate the need for single use plastic bin liners. They are also suitable for the disposal of dog waste.

almost 50 of the solar powered bins are already in place across other parts of County louth, including Dundalk, Drogheda and Blackrock.

louth County Council Chief Executive Joan Martin welcomed the installation of the new bins in Carlingford, saying:

“There are a range of benefits from these solar power bins, including the reduction of carbon emissions, reducing the number of waste collections needed, helping to maintain a cleaner environment, and creating efficiency across waste collection services in the village of Carlingford.”

This project is being funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development through the ClÁR Programme, in partnership with Carlingford Tidy Towns and louth County Council.

5k Fundraiser for Friends of St Oliver’s Community Hospital

A FunDrAisinG 5K for the Friends of st oliver’s Community Hospital in Dundalk has been announced for next month.

The event, which had been postponed due to the pandemic for a couple of years, is back and will take place on saturday september 16, starting at 11am from the Dowdallshill GFC clubrooms on the newry road in Dundalk. registration is open at https:// eventmaster.ie/event/WvZE u65i0j and it is hoped that a large number of runners, walkers and families will take part.

Chairperson of the Friends of st oliver’s Community Hospital, Anne Campbell, said: ‘it is great to be back at the Dowdallshill GFC clubrooms and this is a major fundraiser for the charity.

‘All the money raised goes directly to the provision of comforts for the people who call st oliver’s home’.

The Crafty Gang Dundalk have their first Craft Sale

sET up during the Covid 19 Pandemic, The Crafty Gang Dundalk are a group of 15 members who attend Carroll Village resource centre. The group have been developing their arts and crafts skills over the past two years; making wooden and hypertufa planters, decorative wooden trees, bird boxes, handmade jewellery and clay jewellery stands and trays.

The created products resulted in the group’s first craft sale in our Horticulture unit. The members who attend the Horticulture unit

contributed to the event by planting up and caring for all the planters which looked amazing on the day. The event was well attended by both family and friends who all enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere

of the gardens and their complimentary cuppa.

The event was a huge success for our members as it raised enough money to ensure we can buy more materials and tools to continue making more

crafts and developing new skills. The pictures below show John with his finished wooden planter and the array of products on sale. Well done to everyone involved!
