THE Meenan household in Greenacres was buzzing with excitement yesterday afternoon as friends family and neighbours gathered to welcome home Olympic hero James Meenan after his magnificent three medal haul.

The 20-year-old was one of the stars of the LA Special Olympics as he claimed three medals including a gold in the 100 metres, bronze in the 200 metres and a silver in the 4 x 100 metres relay. His proud mother Eileen was almost overcome as she spoke about her son’s achievements.

Elderly in rural areas warned to stay vigilant

By Paul Byrne The Irish Farming Association has urged people in rural areas to be wary of strangers approaching their houses following a spate of robberies and attacks in recent months.

The warning comes just a couple of weeks after a woman was threatened at knifepoint on a farm in Riverstown. According to Louth IFA chairman Matthew McGreehan this is just the latest in a number of incidents that have been reported to him in recent months.

“Unfortunately we have been receiving news of an increase of bogus callers to people in isolated rural areas who are being robbed and threatened by these men. Race night to raise funds for The Birches The Birches Alzheimer Day Centre is calling on people in the area to support one of their main fundraisers of the year.

Following the success of the inaugural event last year, a second Fundraising Race Night will be held at Dundalk Golf Club on

A series of funding cuts put the service at risk and as a result the centre needs €90,000 to be able to continue providing this vital service and is hoping that local people will respond with their usual generosity.

The annual Fundraising Race Night offers the chance to help out a worthy cause and have a bit of fun.

Hosted by Image IT Group, over 100 local companies came on board last year to raise over €18,000 and 160 people attended the race night. According to Peter Durnin, Managing Director, Image IT Group over 100 tickets have already been sold and we expect to sell 250 tickets.

“This is a great facility to have in our town that helps families who are dealing with Alzheimers. This Charity Race event

gives local businesses the opportunity to sponsor a race, jockey, or to make a donation”, said Peter.

Dublin Researchers Launch a Study Into Dementia Are you or is a family member living with dementia? Dr. Kate Irving in Dublin City University (DCU) and her team are looking for people to take part in an EU-wide study tackling dementia. They want to speak to people living at home with a diagnosis of dementia (and to their families) to understand their personal experience.

Dr. Irving of the School of Nursing and Human Sciences in DCU explains "Dementia is a condition that weighs heavily on the human psyche, triggering emotional responses of fear and dread. However, as we understand dementia better people are finding that, although there are challenges, it is nevertheless possible to live well with dementia. Our project is looking at timely intervention in dementia care or put another way, not waiting for a crisis to happen before people seek out services and supports".

Actifcare (Access to Timely Formal Care) is a European dementia research project operating under the umbrella of the EU's Joint Programme – Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND). This is the largest global research initiative aimed at tackling the challenge of neurodegenerative diseases. Actifcare aims to analyse the pathways to care for people with dementia and their families, in an attempt to better understand the reasons for inequalities in access to healthcare.

"Although family carers are often reluctant to seek help, perhaps because they believe they can and should manage without, or maybe because they don’t know where to go, I would strongly urge them to seek support early on. In reality, the weight of dementia is often too much for families to bear alone and resistance to taking on support often leads to a crisis situation further down the line which could have been avoided" says Dr. Irving.

Cummins retains ‘King of the Mountain’ title

Tipperary legend, Brendan Cummins, retained his title as ‘King of the Mountains’ after claiming the All-Ireland Poc Fada na hEireann crown on Saturday afternoon.

The former AllIreland winning goalkeeper made it nine wins when he held off a competitive field on Annaverna Mountain.

Eoin Reilly of Laois finished second, with Andrew Fahey of Clare in third. Louth’s Gerard Smith performed well on the day and came in tenth overall.

The Ladies competition also saw Patricia Jackman continue her domination when the Waterford native picked up her seventh successive title when she had just two metres to spare over Catriona Daly of Galway.

One of the members of the local committee expressed his delight with the success of the event and pointed out that the smooth running of the day was down to the hard work of the local volunteers.

Man told to address addiction issues A man was told to address his addiction issues in order to help him avoid having problems with the law.

Paul Tavers of 3 Ashwalk, Ardee, was given the warning at Dundalk District Court when he pleaded guilty to a burglary charge.

The court heard that on May 11, 2014, the defendant and another man entered a house at St

Alphonsus Rd, Dundalk. When the owner of the house returned he found a pane of glass broken and called the Gardai.

The house had been ransacked and two men were found in the house.

Blackrock Tidy Towns have announced details of this year’s National Heritage Week event in the village.

Local historian and author Noel Sharkey will continue his series of annual on-site talks with a presentation at the Sundial on the sinking of the “Mary Stoddart” just off Blackrock in April 1858.

Eleven men lost their lives in what was the worst disaster ever in Dundalk Bay. Seven were crew members, but four were local people who died in the rescue attempt. One was Captain James Kelly, whose name was subsequently immortalised following the erection of the Kelly monument in Roden Place to commemorate all those who perished

in the disaster. Another was James Crosbey from Main Street, Blackrock, who was only 25 when he died. Noel will follow a detailed timeline of the events of that fateful week and, in conjunction with Charlie McCarthy, has produced a comprehensive handout to accompany the talk. The evening will culminate with the unveiling of two plaques - one at the site of the house where James Crosbey died after being brought ashore, and a second marking the location of the first Blackrock Lifeboat station which was inaugurated as a response to the disaster. The talk will take place on the evening of Thursday August 27, and admission is free.

Women are given the chance to return home Six women who admitted charges of brothel keeping were sentenced to 14 days in prison, which was suspended for 14 days, on the understanding that they would return to Romania.

Ioana Ciotirca and Oana Ciulu of Apartment 1, Griffith Court, Dundalk, along with Simona Ungureanu, Elena Vieriu, Andreea Andrei and Elisabeta Durama of Apartment 2, Griffith Court, pleaded guilty to the offences when they appeared at Dundalk Dis-

trict Court.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that following a surveillance operation on two apartments Gardai had evidence of callers to the premises on a regular basis. Each of the women admitted working as escorts.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that the defendants admitted their guilt but he also pointed out to the court that they weren’t responsible for organising the actitivities.

Each of the accused intended to leave within two

weeks.

They were all aged between 23 and 30 and it was accepted by the Gardai that they were vulnerable, and that they had been exploited.

Mr Lavery asked Judge Flann Brennan not to deprive them of the opportunity to return to Romania.

Having considered the matter, Judge Brennan imposed the 14 day suspended sentence and stated: “I’m making the order on the basis that they don’t return”.

Wayne remembered at 5-a-side

The inaugral Wayne Shiner Mackin Memorial Cup will be up for grabs as the Lilywhite Supporters club’s five a side soccer tournament gets underway in the DKIT Sports Arena on Saturday August 15.

Wayne Mackin was one of Dundalk FC’s most passionate supporters and an active volunteer with the club before his untimely passing last December.

According to David Curran, a member of the Lilywhite Supporters Club committee and a close friend of Wayne’s, this tournament and trophy will commemorate ‘Shiner’ and he has invited local teams and players to get involved

Man caused criminal damage at shopping centre A local man who activated an alarm at a shopping centre before parading in front of people with his top off and trousers down returned to the complex when he was sober to apologise for his actions.

Insp Martin Beggy stated that on June 21 last year, the defendant was observed in the Marshes Shopping Centre and when he was leaving he broke the glass on a glass unit. Staff were able to deactivate the alarm to prevent a

He then removed his top and trousers and paraded around in view of the public, while there was an altercation outside. The defendant had 57 previous convictions.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his client had been to a party in the company of other men the night before.

They had gone for more drink and then went to the Marshes.

He stated that the people with him had removed his clothing but at no stage was he naked. There was a bit of horseplay also but when he was encouraged to leave he did so.

He returned when sober to

apologise and offered to pay the compensation of €80. Mr MacGuill asked to adjourn the case for a report as it might illustrate the fact that he wasn’t drinking so much any more.

Judge Flann Brennan put the case back to November 18 for a Community Service Report and recommended 100 hours in lieu of six months.

Chamber announce SoSAD Duck Race to take place in September Santa Run profits

Dundalk Chamber has revealed that over €34,500 was raised by 28 charities from the 2014 Santa Run. Each charity was responsible for its own fundraising with the Chamber acting as facilitator and organiser of the event. The Chamber also made the funds available to buy the suits initially.

The rescheduled SoSAD Duck Derby will take place on Sunday 13 September on the Castletown River as up to 15000 plastic ducks will be released for what promises to be a fantastic day of family fun.

Last year the duck race was a huge success with over €5000 raised for SoSAD who provide support for all people affected by suicide.

This year’s race was due to take place in July but it was postponed when the Dundalk Sub Aqua Club were called down to Cork to assist in the search for the body of Barry Ryan. According to Gerry Duffy from SoSAD, ducks are still available to sponsor and he promises that the event will be even bigger and better than last year’s event.

“We’re all set for this year’s Black and White Living Duck Race which will take place on September 13 with 15000 ducks being released into the Castletown river”, explained Gerry.

Man dies in motorway crash

The local community is mourning the death of a man who was killed in a collision on the M1 motorway on Sunday night.

Francis ‘Frankie’ Judge from Togher died following the three-car crash on the northbound carriageway.

The early investigations indicate that the victim was travelling on the wrong side of the motorway.

The driver of one of the other cars sustained leg injuries, while a woman and 11-year-old girl in another car were treated for shock.

The crash occurred at around 10.30pm on Sunday.

The fourth NorthEast “Dip in the Nip” takes place at Dawn on Sunday September 6 at a secret location only dippers and volunteers are allowed attend.

Visitor to Garda station had counterfeit notes in car A man who was a visitor at Dundalk Garda Station ended up spending more time in the building after Gardai discovered counterfeit notes in the car he was using.

As a result Gareth Ward of 16 Oldbridge, Toberona, appeared at Dundalk

District Court where he pleaded guilty to having the notes.

The court heard that on June 13, 2013, Mr Ward was a visitor at the station.

Gardai had information about him and when he got back into the car that was being driven by an-

other person, they found six €50 notes in the glove compartment which were later shown to be fake.

The defendant stated that he was minding them for a friend and that he didn’t know they were fake.

He gave Gardai the

name of the man but they were unable to identify him or find him.

Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that her 34-year-old client had a series of previous convictions and that he had suffered mental health issues and drug addiction. He was currently

on methadone and receiving counselling.

She stated that he didn’t realise they weren’t genuine notes and that he hadn’t come to Garda attention since.

Marist teacher completes epic kayak journey

Marist schoolteacher Susan Honan is celebrating after completing an epic 1,600km journey around the island of Ireland with her friend Sonja Ewen.

Susan and Sonja decided to kayak around Ireland to raise funds and create awareness for Headstrong, a nonprofit organisation supporting young people’s mental health in Ireland.

According to Susan only six or seven women had previously completed the route around Ireland and despite some adverse weather conditions the adventurous duo were delighted to add their names to the list.

“We are both delighted to have completed the trip around Ireland as it is not a very easy thing to do. We started out on June 7 at Carne

beach in Wexford and it took us 46 days to complete our journey”, explained Susan.

“We were getting up at 5am, out in the water by about 6 or 7am and travelling anything up to 60km on any given day.

We were living in each other’s pockets for quite a long time but we had a great understanding and empathy with each other and it was a real team effort as we completed what we set out to do”, added Susan who originally hails from Wexford.

Not all of the days in between were spent on the water, as poor weather forced them on land at Slyne Head, Arklow and the Blackwater but despite blistered hands aching limbs and rough seas the daring duo fought through the pain barrier to complete their epic challenge.

Susan thanked all her sponsors for supporting her on her journey and expressed her delight at being able to raise money for headstrong an organisation very close to her heart.

“I think headstrong do fantastic work for young people in Ireland and I’m really happy that myself and Sonja were able to raise funds as well as awareness for the organisation.

“We were both very lucky that we have jobs which enabled us to spend so long away from home and it’s a great feeling to have completed the journey”, noted Susan.

“Old people in rural areas are particularly vulnerable and we would ask them to be very careful with regards to home security and who they let into their house.” warned Matthew.

According to McGreehan a major cause of an increase in these incidents has been the downgrading and closure of rural Garda stations over the last three years.

“We are without doubt seeing an increase in recent months of these types of incidents and it is no coincidence that Garda numbers in rural areas have decreased in recent years. Gangs are seeing very little Garda presence and they are making hay. Not only are people getting robbed but they are also being threatened by violence as was the case in Riverstown when a farmer’s wife was faced with a man pointing a knife towards her. We need more Gardai in rural areas to deter these attackers.” ,stated Matthew.

Sinn Fein councillor Jim Loughran who lives in Ravensdale echoed Matthew McGreehan’s concerns saying that there has been a very noticeable increase in break ins in the Dundalk-Carlingford area.

“Garda resources in rural areas have been stretched to breaking point and because of this burglaries are on the increase.” ,stated Jim. “There are 377 less Gardai than this time last year and that has to be fixed very quickly. I was told about that poor woman in Riverstown who was threatened by a knife recently and there have been many more incidents in North Louth over the past couple of months.

Rural areas in particular are being targeted and these people need more help. Many elderly people in rural Ireland feel that they have been abandoned.” ,he added.

THE Meenan household in Greenacres was buzzing with excitement yesterday afternoon as friends family and neighbours gathered to welcome home Olympic hero James Meenan after his magnificent three medal haul.

The 20-year-old was one of the stars of the LA Special Olympics as he claimed three medals including a gold in the 100 metres, bronze in the 200 metres and a silver in the 4 x 100 metres relay.

His proud mother Eileen was almost overcome as she spoke about her son’s achievements.

“The whole family is bursting with pride and it’s almost like a dream. I was overcome with emotion when he was picked for the Irish Olympic team but never did I think

A mother and daughter are proving an inspiration to other families currently coping with illness by posting a blog of their experiences on the internet.

Alison Kenny, who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, and daughter, Christina, began the blog almost six months ago, and initially was designed to share information with family and friends.

However, the success of the blog has caught the imagination of people from across Ireland and abroad, much to the delight of the mother and daughter from the Racecourse Road.

Alison, who is now 45, was born with Cystic Fibrosis and having spent years on the transplant list was told in 2007 that she would be taken off the list due to her having a rare bacterial function in her lungs. For the past five years Alison has been getting progres-

Man with 87 convictions warned to stay clear of drugs

A Dundalk man was told to stay clear of drugs or risk serving a lengthy jail sentence when he appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Robert Maguire of St Helena Park, who pleaded guilty to a number of offences, was told he would serve a 12 month term if he didn’t abide by his bail conditions.

The court heard that on May 16 this year, the defendant was observed entering the back yard of Meehans Garage, Dublin Road.

The alarm was activated and the owners attended. CCTV showed Mr Maguire checking doors and cars, although nothing was taken.

On May 12 he entered Brubakers, Park St, via a back door and took a lap top valued at €900 and a body-warmer. He was indentified on CCTV and later admitted the offence.

On June 17 this year he entered News & Deli, Park St, and took a plastic box containing €300 from behind the counter.

The defendant, who had 87 previous convictions, had been released in November after being given a six month sentence.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that the 36-year-old had an extensive record but that his appearances before the court were becoming less frequent. He has

been making attempts to deal with his addictions and wanted a chance to prove that.

Judge Flann Brennan remarked that the offences had been committed only a matter of months following his release as he put the case back for a Probation Report to September 9 and was told he would serve the sentence if he failed to comply with the conditions.

“You simply have to be stopped committing crime. If you go back on drugs you will steal and you will be incarcerated”, he added, and told the defendant that he was looking reasonably well and healthy, and to keep it that way.

Hostile Homework • Homework comes first. It should be done before TV, video games, surfing the web, talking on the phone, or any other "extras". Make sure the children know that it's a priority. This will help to avoid kids with too little sleep from late night study sessions or the future stress that comes when dealing with missing assignments and the resulting poor grades.

• Designate a desk area. Set a specific time and place for homework. Eliminate unnecessary distractions so that each child can focus on their assignments in a designated homework area. It doesn't have to be a desk; it can be any place they are comfortable and able to work.

Man warned he is not living in USA

A man who appeared at Dundalk District Court was told that he was not living in the USA and had no right to bear arms.

Daniel Leonard of 11 Barton Park, Dundalk, was warned that he was not entitled to carry what he liked as he pleaded guilty to possession of a knife, as he was given a nine-month sentence which was suspended for nine months.

The court heard that on January 18 this year, Gardai on patrol at Ashbrook came across the 26-year-old defendant. When they approached him he was seen to throw an item away and

officers found a bread knife. He had no explanation for having it.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client, who had 24 previous convictions had served a significant sentence from 2011 and this was his first offence since then.

He added that Mr Leonard had difficulty with substance abuse and he continued to reveal that his client now has children and a responsibility to them.

In passing sentence, Judge Brennan, warned the defendant that he would serve time in prison if he reoffended.

“This is the Republic of Ireland, not the USA so you don’t have the right to bear arms”, stated the judge who was told by the defendant that he understood.

“I don’t think you do. You seem to think you can carry around what you want. You will serve the sentence if you carry anything like this again or if you put a foot wrong.

“I’m not sure you have learned anything from serving a sentence.

“It seems that you have learned little or nothing”, continued Judge Brennan.

Darts league hold presentation night

Junior World Ranking Tennis Championships

Elaine and Sean Gilsenan Kehoes darts Team Collects First Division Cup Winners Prizes.

The Malthouse was the venue for the recent Dundalk and District Darts League presentation night which saw many trophies handed out to a large spread of teams in the league.

The league has grown significantly over the last number of years and as Chairman Brendan O’Rourke stated in his opening address, the league is looking to grow even further this year.

Thanks were expressed to all

the teams and the supporters and the families of players and publicans who have made the year as successful as ever.

The league titles were well spread in all divisions and with the divisional cups and open shield the team events saw a lot of happy faces.

The divisional singles and doubles seen the individuals who hit form at the right time take the coveted titles back to

the host venues.

The night was finished with music and a great spread of food that kept all happy and dancing till the early hours The committee would like to remind all players and any new team looking to join the league that the AGM for next season will be held in the Redeemer Community centre on August 6 at 7pm.

Genealogical Society Cooley Genealogical and Historical Society will continued plotting and linking of interred families and graves in Kilwirra on Friday August 28 at 8pm.

Maeve’s Gap provides the perfect backdrop for a wavering window frame in Kilwirra Church - the same view the interred saw from their own perspective.

There are four categories buried within the cemetery walls: Families who have a headstone and who know

exactly who is buried in the family plot; Families who have a headstone and are not sure who is buried in the family plot; Families who have no headstone but know of family buried around a particular area; Families who have no idea of who their relatives are but would like advice on the night as to how to source material on them.

In regard to the plotting, each category will be treated in the same way as

it allows for all categories regardless of whether they have headstones or not to be remembered. DVD will be shown.

Refreshments will be served. Admission €5.

Everybody welcome.

For those who received family group sheets and maps, please bring them to the next meeting.

Musical Society to hold fundraising night

Dundalk Musical Society are holding a Country and Western fundraising night

Dundalk Musical Society will hold a fundraising Country and Western Night on Friday of August 28 at 9pm in The Lisdoo. Music will be provided by The Long Riders and it’s sure to be a great night with spot prizes, line dancing and jiving galore.

Recommended dress code for the evening is check shirt, jeans and Stetson but is not essential and other country-inspired

outfits are very welcome on the night with a prize for the best dressed. Tickets priced €10 are available from members of the society or at the door on the night.

This night is to raise funds for the staging of “Sister Act” the musical which will take to the Town Hall stage from October 14 to 18. Rehearsals are well under way and it promises to be a

Join the summer adventure at your local library Wedding Showroom

It’s still not too late to join Louth Co Libraries Summer Reading Adventure. The summer months provide an ideal opportunity for children to take time to find books they really enjoy and experience reading as an activity which is fun and a source of entertainment.

To support children’s reading this summer, Louth County Libraries are running a reading adventure for children. The Summer Reading Adventure is a free programme open to all children.

Each child who registers for the adventure at their local library chooses books to read during their summer holidays. They will receive a Summer Reading Card to record their progress along the way and a library reward stamp will be added to their reading card at the library after each book read.

is your car over 15 years old?

Following the recent announcements by two of Ireland’s major motor insurers that they will no longer provide cover for cars beyond 15 years old, AA Ireland is offering advice for affected motorists.

“Firstly, we would urge any motorists who have 15 year old cars not to panic. There are still many other insurance providers who will cover your car, including The AA. This is part of a bigger problem affecting the motor insurance industry as a whole. Prices are rising sharply for everyone: normal, standard risks are producing annual increases of up to 20%, while non-standard risks (including older cars) are prompting much higher premi-

ums. New customers will also have fewer providers to choose from.

What can consumers do?

It’s time worn advice but do shop around. Even as prices go up there is still good and bad relative value to be had.

Don’t look only at price. It obviously matters but look also at what’s included in the policy.

Protected no claims discount or windscreen cover are benefits that are worth hanging on to.

Why is the price going up so much?

There are a few things going on, some of which are understandable and some that are less so. Traffic volumes have increased rapidly, thus result-

ing in more crashes and more exposure. There is also evidence to suggest that the cost of settling claims for injuries is growing. Fraud is a huge issue in the insurance industry, and one that has been tolerated for too long

but is in fact driving up typical policies by at least €50. Levies are also included in policies to cover previous disasters such as the Quinn collapse, which resulted in a 5% increase.

However, another huge factor is that insurance was sold below cost for a number of years. Providers were fighting to keep their share of the profit but came up fruitless in under-writing terms.

This activity is unsustainable and has resulted in a collective price hike.

What does the AA want done about it?

There ought to be a much tougher regime when it comes to insurance provider’s tolerance of fraud. That includes how companies share data, a practice

that will act as a preventative measure and quell fraud at its source. A regime that encompasses Garda detection, policing of the issue and court dealings with fraudsters in the aftermath would greatly stabilise the industry as a whole.

Address the rising cost of claims The Injuries Board (injuriesboard.ie) has worked well for ten years at keeping legal and unnecessary costs out of the claims process. This requires a review due to the changing nature of the industry. Presently, courts are allowed to award higher payouts for personal injuries which results in the rise of unnecessary costs that are not part of the victim’s initial compensation.

Less crashes on Irish roads Though it’s not exactly rocket science we know that when we invest in the number of roadside Gardaí, the number of collisions reduces. The evidence is more pointed in the case of fatalities and very serious injuries, but their presence also reduces the volume of smaller crashes as well.

In 2013 and 2014, The AA was warning that Gardaí numbers on the road were deteriorating unacceptably and we said this was the key reason why the number of crashes was increasing. To be fair that is a little better so far this year but we still do not have the level of enforcement that you see elsewhere.”

new car sales up The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has released the official car sales figures for July as part of the 2nd Quarter SIMI Motor Industry Reviewl. The “152” sales figures for July are up 48% (27,633) compared to (18,711) July 2014 and are currently up 30% (109,960) for the first half of 2015. Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) were up 49% (3,768) on July 2014 (2,535) and year to date are up 54% (18,426). Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) are also up for the month of July 41% (291) compared to the same month last year (207) and overall are up 9% (1,556).

The July figures were compiled by Economist Jim Power and provide key Industry information on 2015 up to the end of June.

The Review has highlighted a 25.4% increase in car sales so far in 2015 with the price of a new car down on average of 2.9%.

This increase has seen the Irish Exchequer benefit by €761million from new and used car sales since the start of the year, 3.7% of the total tax taken by the State this year.

The SIMI Review also highlighted the key contribution of the Motor Industry in relation to job creation with 13.6% of all new jobs in Ireland in the past 12 months being created across the Motor Industry.

5,600 new jobs have been created in the Industry since June 2014.

The cost of motoring in general has decreased notwithstanding the fact that motor insurance costs have increased by 15.7% since June 2014.

Economist and author of the report, Jim Power, said; “Given the upward momen-

tum in the auto sector and the increasingly strong contribution it is making to Exchequer revenues, employment and regional economic activity, it is important that Budget 2016 should not make any changes that could adversely affect car sales.”

Mark Boggan, President of the SIMI, said; “This is the 3rd year of the dual registration plate which has been a real success, allowing the Industry to better structure its business year. We now have sales occurring in the second half of the year at rates never seen before as consumers have embraced the opportunity to purchase their new car in July. July this year reached 93% of the January sales figure, compared to 82% last year, 67% in 2013 and 21% in 2012 the last year before the new system was introduced.”

Introducing the new FERRARI 488 SPIDER

Following on from the release of the 488 GTB Ferrari has announced the arrival the stunning new 488 Spider.

It will be premiered at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September.

The new Ferrari 488 Spider offers the same torsional rigidity and stiffness figures as the fixed head 488 GTB with only a 50 kg increase in weight – and 23 per cent gain on the 458 Spider figures – with help from the spaceframe chassis.

Power comes from a turbocharged V8 3.9 litre unit outputting 660 bhp at 8,000 rpm / 760Nm at 3,000 rpm which equates to 0-62 mph in 3 seconds dead with top speed of 203 mph. According to data from Ferrari the combined fuel consumption is 24.7 mpg with CO2 emissions of 260 g/ km.

The 488 Spider will feature a powered hard top that retracts in under 14 seconds with a 25kg weight saving over the

fabric roofs used on the pre 458 Spider line-ups. To avoid unwanted buffeting there is an adjustable electrically operated glass wind deflector to keep your hair in place.

The new Spider promises to be more engaging than the 458 Spider with an integrated Side Slip Angle Control System (SSC2) that results in a 12% faster acceleration time out of corners and a nine per cent improvement in throttle and steering responses.
