Gardaí are appealing for information following a serious hit and run incident which occurred last Saturday morning on Barrack Street. The incident left a male in his 30’s with serious injuries after he was deliberately struck by a car which drove at him while he walked on the footpath.

Sinn Fein councillor Ruairi O’Murchú labelled the attack as ‘sinister and extremely dangerous’ and urged anybody with information to contact the gardaí.

“In this incident a car mounted the footpath on Barrack St. in order to hit a pedestrian. The man was then dragged for a significant distance underneath the vehicle.

This is a residential area and

I dread to think what could have happened if children had been in the vicinity of this incident.

“The people who did this care nothing for the lives of people in this area.

“Their actions have seriously injured this man and could have resulted in a fatality. It also had the potential to impact many more people living in this area. I urge anyone with information to bring it to An Gardá Siochána as quickly as possible,” concluded the recently elected Sinn Fein councillor.

“Gardaí are investigating a serious hit and run road traffic collision that occurred today 1st

June at approximately 9:55am at Barrack Street, County Louth.

The incident left a male in his 30’s with serious injuries and he was taken to our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Gardaí are treating this as a deliberate act of endangerment and are appealing to the public for

any information about the current whereabouts of or on the driver of a silver Ford Focus with a registration plate of 99D-25111.

Fly Youth are World Champions

Not content with being members of the nation’s favourite hip-hop crew through their recent exploits during Ireland’s Got Talent, now three local dancers, Lonán Murphy, Nicole Ellis and Caitlin Rooney have added the title of World champions to their list of honours.

Following on from the success of their TV appearances with Dublin-based Fly Youth, the Dundalk natives headed to Cancun in Mexico last week to compete at Dancers Paradise an Invitational only Hip Hop World Event (a first for a European crew) against dancers from Australia, Canada and the USA amongst others.

They travelled with the support and blessing of their schools and as a result helped put Ireland on the map once more. The crew also joined in the many fun events while in Mexico, winning the tug of war, dance off and “lip sync” battles.

The dancers and their crew won the hearts of the locals and other competitors who initially had given them no hope only to be floored by their winning performance.

There were plenty of celebrations in the McFadden household on Saturday evening after they scooped the top prize in the St Kevin’s GAA/ St Brides GAA ‘Win A House’ competition. Martin and Tracey McFadden won the big prize when their ticket was pulled out by Super Intendent Andrew Watters in front of a packed crowd in St Kevin’s Community Centre in Philipstown on Saturday evening.

6,500 tickets in total were sold at €100 each which ensured that the fundraiser ended up being a huge success for all concerned. The club will now use the money to complete work in the new community centre as well as improving facilities in the club.

The Family Addiction Support Network was delighted to launch the report on its recently commissioned research “A study on how families are affected by substance misuse in the North East Region of Ireland” on May 14 at the Carnbeg Hotel.

The report was launched by Minister for Health Promotion and the National Drugs Strategy, Catherine Byrne TD and was attended by local representatives and other service providers from both the Statutory and Community and Voluntary Sector and many of the Families severely impacted by the addiction of a loved one.

A key backdrop to the study is the National Drug Strategy, Reducing Harm,

Supporting Recovery, which for the first-time included families as service users in their own right. The interface between changes in social policy and families has a long and chequered history in Ireland. This study is the first to look at the inter-face within the context of adult family members affected by substance mis-use in the North East Region of Ireland. It is also driven by the narrative of families, valued as “experts by experience” and gives voice to the chaos, trauma and distress visited on families impacted by addiction of a family member. Going forward the key findings of this study will hopefully help formulate changes.

Louth/Meath ETB Maytime Serenade for RCNE celebrates EU Day EU day was celebrated

The aim of the information fairs was to raise awareness of the multitude of full and parttime courses, organised

by LMETB, which are available, free of charge, throughout Louth and Meath, as Sadie Ward McDermott, Director of Further Education and Training with LMETB, explained.

“The range of options for adults wishing to return to education and training has grown significantly over the last few years. Very often people are not aware of the wide range of courses and programmes, certified and uncertified, which are available in their local area.

“Whether you want to return to education, enhance your career options or re-enter the workplace, there is

‘A Maytime Serenade’ provided a treat for local music fans

On Saturday May 11 local music fans were greatly entertained by a concert entitled ‘A Maytime Serenade’, in aid of Rape Crisis North East.

Following a tasteful Prosecco & Canapé reception, the night began with an address from Grace McArdle, Manager of Rape Crisis North East and Cherrywood Counselling Centre who spoke movingly of the important work of the centre and the services available to survivors and their families both male and female, boys and girls from the age of 12

Excellent round sees Colm claim five-stroke victory Colm Coburn shot one of the best rounds in recent times around Dundalk when he returned a nine under par 63 on Sunday to win the Irwin Lockington Salver by five shots.

Two birdie twos at the par three ninth and 17th were key to the 18 handicapper’s low round as he came home with an impressive gross score of 81.

Noel Crowe (24) with a net 68 led the chasing pack while Fergal Harte (6) with a 76 had the day’s best gross score and James Reilly (17) with a 73 won the Juvenile Prize. The Category prizes went to Fergal Sexton (9), Dermot McKenna (17) and John Oakes (26) Paul Coburn (12) with 41pts won the first of this season’s

Saturday Singles Stableford competitions while Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford was won by Ciaran Daly (17) with an excellent score of 45pts.

The Barton Cup team bowed out of this year’s competition when they lost their third round tie against Royal Tara by 3.5 to 1.5.

Neil MacKell and Conor Hackett were the only Dundalk winners, while Aidan Thornton and Billy Cairns lost 2& 1 in a tight match.

Mark Gorham and Trevor Giff started well but lost out 3&2, while Neil Mullooly and Mickey Coburn were also hauled back after going two up after eight holes.

The remaining match was another close encounter but Conor Curran and Bobby McCarthy’s match was called in and declared a half as Royal Tara had collected the three points needed to advance to Round Four and a meeting with The Island.

Caolan Rafferty shot a super five under par 66 in the final round of the Brabazon Trophy in England to climb through the field from T44 and finish in 10th place.

The Brabazon Trophy is the English Open Strokeplay Championship and his top ten finish should help Caolan continue his climb under the World Rankings where he is currently lying in 35th place.

Midsummer Family Fun Day for Lithuanian Community Midsummer’s Day is celebrated throughout Europe but it is a particularly important day for Lithuanians who celebrate the day with traditional activities such as singing, storytelling and dancing until the sun sets.

These are customs brought from pagan customs and beliefs and the Louth Lithuanian community will be celebrating this special day with a family fun Fair to be held at Dundalk Racecourse from 11.00 am on the 22nd of June. This is an event for everybody to come along to and have a nice family day out.

The Lithuanian community have extended an open invitation for anybody to come along and enjoy their traditions.

Activities will include storytelling, BBQ’s, searching for the magic fern blossom, greeting the

rising midsummer sun and washing the face with the morning dew.

There will be lots of games for kids as well as songs, dance and plenty of fun for all ages.

After the activities in Dundalk Stadium the party will continue in the Imperial Hotel where organisers have booked a concert with Andrius Mamontovas a former Eurovision Song Contest entrant for Lithuania.

Their song “We are the winners’ has achieved much recognition from both members of the recording industry and fellow artists. The band has gone on to record and release other tracks and have performed in venues all over Europe.

The Lithianian Midsummer Festival begins at 11am on Sunday 22nd of June. All welcome.

It was a fitting and very deserving acknowledgement for all the efforts and achievements of Ashik, Sean, Chige, Darius, Michael and Spencer. The boys intend to keep their Project going in to Transition Year, and do their bit to maintain the momentum of all the young people to tackle the major issue facing us all today, and that is climate change.

Stabannon Parnells Sticker Book initiative

Stabannon Parnells have come up with a novel idea for a fundraiser with the club about to launch their ‘Sticker Book’ to try and raise money for the club.

The club will launch their sticker book campaign on June 9 and after that date supporters can buy a pack of six stickers for just €1.

Every player in the club from the junior teams to the ladies side will have their own sticker and the book will be completed when all stickers are collected. According to Mags Briscoe who is on the ‘Sticker Book’ committee there’s a great buzz around the Stabannon community ahead of the initiative.

“I believe we are the first football club in the country

to launch an initiative like this and we are very excited ahead of our launch night next week. We are working with a company from Spain who are sending us the sticker books next week. We are charging €1 for a pack of six stickers and all players in the club will be represented in the sticker book.

There is no upfront cost to the club as the company in Spain will recoup most of

Dundalk Dog Rescue host their annual sponsored walk on Sunday

Dundalk Dog Rescue are inviting you to join them for their Annual Sponsored Walk 2019.

The event which takes place Sunday, June 16, will see the roads packed with walkers and their four-legged friends as they take part in one of the town’s most

fun-filled sponsored walks.

Join Dudley (the DDR mascot) and co at the start and finish at The Spirit Store, Dundalk. Registration is only €20 and begins at 3.30pm with the walk starting at 4pm sharp.

DDR goodie bags are available

for early registration but limited amounts are available.

There will also be a barbecue available to create the perfect ending to the day.

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with leading production company, Dundara Television & Media to launch a new Television and Media Academy this summer for individuals with an interest in the film and production DkIT President, Michael Mulvey, PhD, with Enda industry.

Grace, M,D. at Dundara Television & Media launch Seven courses will be new Television & Media Summer Academy. offered as part of the summer academy aimed at providing insight and training across a wide spectrum of areas including radio, television, sound production, podcasts and mobile. The programmes are open to people of all ages and abilities and will commence in late June. All programmes

will be held in the state-ofthe-art Carrolls Building at DkIT and houses a stateof-the-art TV studio, audio and radio recording studios, a photographic darkroom, performance spaces, edit suites and a screening room.

Courses will be taught by a host of industry experts

including renowned Irish television director, Theo O’Grady, award-winning journalist with RTÉ, Evelyn O’Rourke, well known television presenter, Lisa Cannon, leading Sports presenter, Michael Lyster and Emmy-nominated composer Craig S. Garfinkle, among others.
