THE Dundalk parents of an 11-yearold child who sadly died after battling cancer are walking 200km this month in his memory.

Colleen McNally from the Avenue Road and her husband, Paul, are fundraising for the Maria Goretti Children’s Respite Centre.

“Daragh had autism and he was the light of our lives. We made a promise to him on the day he died to help children like him with special needs,” said Colleen.

“Daragh will be one and a half years gone and we are going to walk in memory of our boy for The Maria Goretti Children’s Respite Centre, which Daragh called his funhouse.

“This is an amazing centre in our home town, Dundalk, and the service this centre provides for children with special needs is just amazing.”

Witness appeal for fatal road accident Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the N53 near Hackballscross, Co. Louth on Tuesday morning, 4th May at approximately 10.30am.

The collision involved two cars and a lorry. The driver of one car, a male aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Coroner was notified and his body was taken to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where a post-mortem will take place in due course. The scene was preserved for Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the road was closed for a time with local diversions put in place.

“This is an amazing centre in our home town, Dundalk, and the service this centre provides for children with special needs is just amazing.”

She added: “In our current situation, these families need this service more than ever. Covid has hit us all hard, but more so these families dealing with children

who have behavioural issues, children who don’t sleep, and children who need 24-hour care.

“It’s a place they go where they have lots and lots of fun, whilst the parents get a well-deserved break. I’m asking earnestly to help us raise this money for this centre please.”

Last year, Colleen and Paul presented a cheque for over €5,000 to Realt na Mara national school.

Colleen and Paul presented the cheque to the Mill Street national school following their

fundraiser in aid of its centre for autism on Friday, October 2.

The money raised went towards resources for ‘Daragh’s Room’ which was named in his memory.

Anyone who would like to get involved in the fundraiser is being invited to walk 100km in Daragh’s memory.

“A volunteer scheme should be set up to help protect our parks and communal areas from the scourge of litter.

O’Murchú seeks help for 13-year-old with eating disorder The ‘urgent and acute’ case of a Dundalk teenager who has an eating disorder has been raised in the Dáil

by Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú who pleaded with a minister of state for help for the 13-year-old.

The girl has been in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for the last seven weeks.

Deputy Ó Murchú told Minister of State with Responsibility for Mental Health Mary Butler TD that he was reluctant to raise the matter in a public forum but he had been working with Louth and Meath Mental Health Services for the last two months without a resolution being found to the issue.

He said all those involved

He told Minister Butler: ‘I believe the mental health

services have done all they can. It is an acute situation.

She has an eating disorder, combined, possibly, with other factors.

‘She has been awaiting acute residential care. It has been promised. It has never actually happened. She was released twice – once she was brought back to hospital in hypoglycaemic shock.

‘Another time, she was brought back to hospital from the point of view that she refused point blank 6to eat. This issue has got worse and worse. We really need a solution and we are dealing in desperation.

‘The child has also engaged in self harm and she, and her family, are particularly worried about her health. They are also wor-

ried about why this is taking so long.

‘We really need this dealt with. I have left this a number of weeks as I dealt with services. I had the belief it was being dealt with at the highest of levels but I am literally at my wits’ end and we need to deal with this as quickly as possible.

‘I have been dealing with the HSE and particularly with the mental health services but I believe they have done everything that they can and there is frustration at their level.

Minister Butler asked for the details to be sent to her office straight away so it can be looked at as she cannot speak about individual cases.

She was, however, ‘aware

of the amount of eating disorders and self harm referrals in the last 12 months, especially in relation to young girls’ and she had moved to reinstate the funding of €3.94 million for specialist treatment and inpatient care’.

Minister Butler added that these decisions are not political, they are ‘always made at a clinical, medical perspective’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘I would really appreciate it if you can bring whatever pressure you can to bear just to provide a solution because we are dealing with a really difficult, absolutely acute situation.

‘It’s somebody’s health and we are very, very worried’.

Hollywood movie set in Carlingford released next week in USA A major Hollywood production which was partly filmed in Carlingford in 2019 is set to hit the big screens next week in America.

‘Finding You’ is a comingof-age story based on the book “There You’ll Find Me”

by American writer Jenny B. Jones.

The plot follows aspiring violinist Finley Sinclair (Rose Reid), who travels to a coastal village in Ireland for a semester abroad following an ill-fated audition at a prestigious New York music conservatory. The film is produced by Ken Carpenter, Julie Ryan, Stephen Preston and Brian Baugh and both Ken and Julie have stated that they enjoyed their time in Carlingford immensely.

“We couldn’t have hoped for a better setting for our film than Carlingford. The village plays so great on screen, and happily, our experience filming there was a delight. We benefited from excellent locations and from kind and gracious hosts who facilitated our being there.

From Alan at Taffes to Paul at the Ghan House and so many others, we were made to feel very much at home in Carlingford,” stated Ken. Producer Julie Ryan echoed those sentiments saying “We thoroughly enjoyed our time filming in Carlingford and working with the locals culminating in a big festival at the pier with music, dancing and lots of locals came out as extras. We also filmed around the town including in Taffess Castle bar and outside Ghan House. It was an all round very pleasant experience assisted by the council and local community,” she explained.

All-island roll out of minimum pricing needed

Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has confirmed that Sinn Féin has written to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, asking him to engage with his counterpart in the Assembly, Robin Swann to work towards an all-island roll out of minimum unit alcohol pricing.

The letter follows proposals to start the policy in the South.

Deputy Ó Murchú said:

‘We support implementing minimum unit pricing of alcohol across the island that are seen as part of a suite of measures that are needed to reduce problem drinking and health inequalities.

‘However at the time the legislation was passed, it was understood that this would be rolled out on an all-island basis.

‘This was to avoid a scenario where the price

of alcohol in one jurisdiction would be significantly cheaper than the other - a scenario that would clearly disadvantage businesses in one jurisdiction and seriously undermine the purpose of the legislation in large parts of the country.

‘There are fears that if it was implemented in the South before the North, it would light a fire under cross border shopping.

‘It has been brought to

me by multiple businesses in County Louth and by Dundalk Chamber of Commerce. They are in support of the legislation, but their fear is that if people are heading North for cheaper drink, they would also be tempted to further change their shopping habits to include groceries and other items.

‘Unfortunately it appears that what was to be a ‘partnership approach’ from

the Ministers for Health on this island has not materialised. As is the case with the Covid-19 pandemic, co-operation between the health ministers is not at an acceptable level.

‘Health Minister Stephen Donnelly must outline what efforts he has made to ensure that minimum unit alcohol pricing will be rolled out at the same time across the island, as originally inRuairí Ó Murchú TD. tended’.

Welcome clarity on retail re-opening but major challenges ahead—Retail Ireland Retail Ireland, the Ibec group that represents the retail sector, today welcomed clarity that the sector would reopen fully on Monday 17 May, with click and collect resuming a week earlier, on Monday 10 May. The group said retail businesses were looking forward to reopening and staying open, and would be reviewing and updating their public health protocols to ensure a safe experience for customers and staff.

Retail Ireland Director Arnold Dillon said: “Today has been a long time coming. The last few months have been incredibly stressful for retail businesses and their staff. We now have a clear roadmap

and can plan ahead with confidence. It is crucial that consumers support those businesses that have been badly hit

by Covid restrictions.

Redeemer AC Open Day

REDEEMER Athletics Club held a very successful open day for athletes and parents on Sunday, May 2.

Around 200 athletes and parents attended the highly anticipated event at the Clan na Gael pitch from 10am1pm.

The Juvenile & Senior Club is making a comeback after 25 years and will be a club for athletes of all abilities.

“We’re not looking for superstars.

We won’t be pushing people into competing,” said Redeemer AC Head Coach Niall Hearty.

“There was great excitement on the Open Day amongst children and parents. We even have a few adults who wish to join up. We take athletes of all abilities from age seven upwards and our aim is for every athlete to leave each training session with a smile on their face, wanting to come back to the next session, whilst learning the three fundamental elements of athletics which is running, jumping and throwing. We cover all of the athletics disciplines from track and field to

cross country,” explained Niall.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to Last Lap Café for sponsoring teas and coffees on the day. Our first day of training will be held on Wednesday, May 5. There is great excitement around it,” he added.

Redeemer AC is open for membership for athletes aged eight and upwards. It caters for athletes of all abilities in running, jumping and throwing.

Conor and Evan making a point for mental health Sean McDermotts club players Conor Lynch and Evan Bird will combine their passions of football and mental health to try and raise funds for SOSAD next month. The Ardee duo will attempt to visit every GAA club in Louth and kick a point in every ground they visit over the June bank holiday weekend.

According to Conor both he and Evan were both reminded of the importance of good mental health during the pandemic as many sectors of the country were closed down including the chance to play and train with their friends in their local GAA club.

“Myself and Evan are best of friends and we are both very passionate about Louth football and mental health.

We knew that a lot of people were struggling during lockdown especially guys in our age bracket who were used to going out training a

couple of nights a week and then playing a game at the weekend. It’s been a tough year for everybody and we decided to try and combine our interests in football and mental health to try and raise a bit of money for the brilliant organisation SOSAD,” explained Conor.

There’s about 40

GAA clubs in the county and we plan on visiting every one of them over the Saturday (5th) and Sunday (6th) of the June bank holiday. We are going to start in Cuchulainn Gaels in Omeath and then work our way down the County. We will also kick a point in Louth GAA’s headquarters in Darver at

We’ll probably start in Drogheda on Sunday morning before working our way through Mid Louth and back to our home pitch in Sean McDermotts,” he added.

“We have got brilliant support from Louth GAA and all the clubs around the county and there will be a player from each club kicking a point with us when we arrive to their ground.

We will have buckets with us and hopefully people can donate to our fundraiser to help out SOSAD if they can spare a couple of euro. I know that there are lads all over the country who have missed the football over the last year and it has been tough on everybody. Heading out training a couple of times a week is a great way not only to stay fit but also to just meet your mates and have the craic away from work or home.

“I myself have suffered with mental health

issues in the past but thankfully I’m over all that now. I do think that lads my age have started to talk about their problems more and that’s great to see. I think the GAA is a great avenue to get anything that is worrying you off your chest as there is a gang of lads there who are almost like brothers that you can talk to. If anybody is in trouble and doesn’t want to go to their doctor I would urge them to share their problems with a friend. Talking about these things can really help and nobody should have to deal with any meantal health issues by themselves,” stated Conor.

Popular careworker Paudie Breen bid his final farewells to his friends in RehabCare, Carroll Village last Friday after 13 years in the centre. Paudie, a well known actor and entertainer in town will start a new chapter in a couple of weeks when he begins his new job in Co. Wicklow.

According to Paudie he will miss all the friends he has made in RehabCare over the years but he has assured everybody that they have not seen the

colleague well as he thanked him for the great work he has done during his time in the centre.

“After 13 eventful years as a much loved and respected facilitator in Rehabcare Paudie Breen is moving on to a new chapter of his life down in County Wicklow,” stated Sandy.

Council to employ extra staff to combat littering LOUTH County Council (LCC) is in the process of employing additional staff for the summer season in a bid to tackle litter.

An IBAL survey published last year found a rise in rubbish on many streets around the country due to

the Pandemic.

“Regardless of the season, Louth County Council would appeal to members of the public not to litter,” said a LCC spokesperson. “Where businesses apply and avail of the Outdoor Dining Scheme and/

or offer outside services there will still be a onus on business owners to keep the environs of their properties clear of litter.”

She added: “We are in the process of employing additional staff for the summer season, however,

every resident and visitor has an individual responsibility to respect our beautiful county and to leave it clean and safe for others to enjoy. “We would also remind those who would be inclined to litter of the ‘polluter pays principle’ where-

McGreehan welcomes launch of €3 million Pilot Bike and E-Bike Upcycling Initiative Louth Fianna Fáil Senator Erin McGreehan has welcomed the launch of a three-year pilot initiative for the provision of high quality up-cycled bicycles and e-bikes for those on low incomes and/ or those who are most marginalised and disadvantaged.

Funding of €3 million is being provided by the Department of Transport for this initiative over a three-year period and will be made available through the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Community Services Programme.

HSE warn parents in relation to April Registrations positive as serious tummy bug in children Retailers prepare for Showroom

The Health Protection Team (HPT) in the Department of Public Health, HSE North East would like to advise the public to take extra care when in contact with farm animals following an increase in the numbers of cryptosporidiosis and VTEC (E. coli) infections in recent weeks. The majority of the infections have occurred in children under the age of ten.

Parents and caregivers of children attending crèches and primary schools are advised to monitor their children to see if they develop the symptoms of diarrhoea, particularly if you notice any blood in stools, as then they should seek prompt medical attention with their General Practitioner (GP) or GP out of hours service.

To date in 2021, there have been 33 cases of cryptosporidiosis and 20 cases of VTEC infections in the North East region, with a minority of these being hospitalised and all are recovering or recovered. In comparison for all of 2020, there were 24 cases of cryptosporidiosis and 79 cases of VTEC reported in the North East.

Commenting on the increase in notifications, Dr Keith Ian Quintyne, Specialist in Public Health Medicine with the De-

partment of Public Health, HSE North East, said; “Investigations have not identified any clusters or outbreaks, but it has highlighted that the majority of cases in children have had interaction with farm animals. I would like to remind parents and caregivers of the importance of practicing good hand hygiene after touching or handling animals.”

Cryptosporidiosis is a diarrhoeal disease caused by a microscopic parasite (Cryptosporidium). Once an animal or person is infected, the parasite lives in the intestine and passes in the stool.

The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods and makes it very resistant to chlorine based disinfectants. It can survive temperatures greater than 70°C. It is found (particularly in water) through the world.

VTEC usually causes a mild illness that most people recover completely without any problems.

However, VTEC produces a toxin that may damage the bowel wall causing severe bloody diarrhoea.

In about 5 – 8% of cases, the infection causes a life-threatening complication called haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). In HUS, the red blood cells are destroyed and kidney failure occurs.

HUS is more likely to occur in

children under 5 years old and the elderly. VTEC infection usually requires no specific treatment other than ensuring plenty of fluids are taken. Family members and playmates of these children are at high risk of also becoming infected.

Dr Augustine Pereira, Director of Public Health in the North East, said; “As we’ve all come to realise during COVID-19, clean hands saves lives. This is true for many infectious diseases. The risk of gastrointestinal infections can be dramatically reduced through handwashing. It is essential to wash your hands using soap and water after touching or handling animals and children do not put their hands near their mouth after petting animals. By being aware and cleaning our hands we can help to avoid illness and enjoy the outdoors.”

The HSE has issued national alerts to the public recently because of the increasing numbers of these infections across Ireland, and have offered advice to the public on ways in which they could avoid infection and the importance of good hand-washing practices.
