A scout leader in Dundalk has stated that he and his colleagues have received nothing but support from parents around Dundalk in the wake of the recent scandal which has cast a shadow over the organisation nationwide. Tusla, the agency responsible for the wellbeing of children in Ireland, recently sent a letter to Scouting Ireland calling for an “urgent review” into the manner in which the organisation manages child protection

concerns and disclosures and questioned the current viability of overnight trips. Those comments followed a review which revealed that there have been as many as 71 alleged abusers and 108 alleged victims in the Scouting Ireland organisation with most cases taking place between the 1960’s and 1980’s. Gerry Byrne, a leader at the St Patrick’s Scout group on the Castletown Road says he was shocked and saddened by the allegations of abuse which emerged recently but insisted Continued on Page 2

Countdown is on to St Patrick’s Day events The countdown is on for St Patrick’s Day in Dundalk and the newly-formed organising committee are busy putting the finishing touches to what they hope is a day of fun, entertainment and surprises for the whole family. Cllr. Conor Keelan said he was very pleased with the way the plans are coming together and thanked all the Dundalk councillors who have helped with the costs of the event thanks to their donations from their

council allocations. Musical and dance acts, which showcase some of the huge range of talent Dundalk has to offer, will be on stage at the Courthouse Square and at Earl Street and include Long Time Coming, Crystal Ice, McGee School of Dance, Faoi Gheasa, Orwells 84, Cuchulainn Celtic Strings, Cobra Kan and Dundalk Brass Band. Cllr. Keelan, who is on the committee with fellow Dundalk

councillors Maeve Yore, Ruairí Ó Murchú and Anne Campbell, said all local councillors have been quick to allocate money to help cover the costs of the event. He said: ‘I am grateful for the speedy response from councillors to our call for donations and this has helped ensure that we have some really great entertainment for all the family lined up’. In addition to the exciting list of acts, a family fun zone, run by

Pelican, will be set up at the Market Square, with plenty to keep children entertained. Access to the area is by wristbands, which can be purchased in advance at Stitchcraft, Earl Street. The cost is €6 or €20 for four. The event, which runs from 2pm to 5pm around the Market Square, is supported by Louth County Council, Dundalk BIDS, Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, Stage and Lighting, Pelican Promotions,

Long Walk Shopping Centre, PayPal, Volunteer Centre Louth and Digiweb. Leah qualifies for speech writing final Leah O’Shaughnessy from St Vincent’s Secondary School stood out from over 150 entries to reach the Final of the national ActionAid Speech Writing Competition. The increasingly popular competition, now in its fifth year, received entries from students aged 14 to 17, from almost 50 schools across the country. This was the highest number of entries to date. Leah is one of ten Finalists selected to deliver their speech at the Final in Dublin’s Royal Irish Academy March 20. ActionAid provides long term support to the poorest and most marginalised women and children in developing countries, so they can overcome the obstacles holding them back. Their Women’s Rights programme, funded by Irish Aid, works to eliminate violence against women and girls by engaging with women, men and girls. Each year we have been greatly impressed by the quality of speeches we receive from Co Louth, and this year was no exception. It is clear that an awful lot of time and effort has gone into each speech, and it was very

difficult to choose our finalists. We’re looking forward to hearing Leah’s speech at the Final.” The two winning students will travel with their teachers to Greece this summer, where they will have the unique opportunity to see ActionAid’s work first hand. Dundalk Deaf Group raise concerns regarding potential closure of Irish Deaf Society By Paul Byrne

Deaf people in Dundalk have raised concerns about the possible closure of the Irish Deaf Society. The Irish Deaf Society (IDS) revealed recently that they face permanent closure by the end of next month if government funding is not secured. The Irish Deaf Society led the campaign for Irish Sign Language recognition which resulted in the Irish Sign Language Act being passed last year. They recently released a statement stating that they had enough finances to last just two months. “We recently had a meeting with officials from Minister Finian McGrath’s office and the Dept. of An Taoiseach. We had hoped that we would have good news about funding at that meeting, but Government has not found a way to fund IDS yet. We are working with officials to try and extend our deadline longer than the end of March so that we can delay issuing redundancy notification. At the moment it is not clear if there is a way forward, we are providing officials with financial information about our require-

ments. We are hoping to have further news next week. “As it stands today, Government is working with us to see if we can create a little more time for discussions and extend that deadline into April, but we still have no positive developments in terms of finding a State body that will work with us. Government has not said “no” to our funding, but they have not said “yes” either.” A statement from Dundalk Deaf Group outlined their worries regarding the potential closure of the IDS. “The recent news which revealed that the Irish Deaf Society is in danger of closing is a huge worry to all deaf people in Ireland including Dundalk Deaf Group. The Irish Deaf Society is a very important organisation as it provides advocacy, support and information for deaf who found themselves in many situations with no-one to turn to for clear instruction in deaf language of ISL (Irish Sign Language). IDS played a crucial role in ISL gaining official recognition in December 2017 and for that the deaf community is very thankful,” read the statement.

Ambulance service in real crisis Sinn Féin Louth representative Cllr Anne Campbell has expressed her concerns at reports that the ambulance service in the north-east, including Louth, is “significantly understaffed and having serious difficulties in providing a fit-for-purpose service.” Cllr Campbell said: “I attended the recent strike action at Dundalk Ambulance Station and the staff there told me that the service is in disarray. “Their reports of a skeleton service echo media reports today which state that new rostering arrangements at ambulance stations in Monaghan and Castleblayney have had a negative impact on Dundalk, Drogheda and Ardee. “According to media reports new rosters were imposed by management without the necessary additional staff to fulfil re-

regarding ambulance response times also Gerry Adams said: “I have written to the Minister for Health seeking urgent information about these new rostering arrangements and their impacts on my constituency. “I also raised with him reports that in Drogheda there is only one ambulance after 4pm Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s until the following morning. If there is a call outside the area Drogheda might be left with no cover. “On Friday’s there is one ambulance after 4pm until 7pm on Saturday “The Sinn Féin Alternative Health budget delivered two additional ambulances per region in its first year. This service can be properly resourced, if the political will is there,” stated Mr Adams.

St Vincent’s girls ready for debating final St. Vincent’s debating and public speaking team are set to bring their rhetorical prowess to the stage yet again with their forthcoming performance in the Leinster final of the Knights of St Columbanus public speaking competition. The culmination of several months hard work, the girls clinched their place at the event in Dublin after a rousing speech on the abolition of the death penalty. Under the guidance of their teacher Victoria O’Hagan, the students Leah O’Shaughnessy, Gillian Fearon and Doireann Minford hope that their powerful message calling for the execution of justice, not people, will see them bring home the gold. This is the second time this year that St Vincent’s have reached such lofty heights, with Emma Connolly being selected from hundreds nationally to

Adding to an impressive haul of awards that over the years have included several national titles in the European Commission Soap Box competition, the Action Aid public speaking competition and three natoinal Debating Science awards. This year St. Vincent’s have also seen Queensley Odidi take home the Soroptimist perpetual trophy for excellence in communication and public speaking. On the forthcoming final in which the students demonstrate how they have found a language for their faith, Victoria added “The girls have worked tirelessly in their preparation on this complex and emotive topic and I want to wish them the very best of luck in the final”.

John Moore delivers Masterclass at DkIT Acclaimed Hollywood filmmaker and Dundalk native, John Moore recently visited Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) to deliver an intensive masterclass with students on the BA (Hons) in Film and TV Production students. Originally from St Clement’s Park, Point Road, and a past-pupil of Dundalk CBS, John Moore is a strong supporter of DkIT’s School of Informatics & Creative Arts. He regularly visits the campus when he returns to Ireland and each year he presents the annual John Moore Film Award to the best films created by third and fourth year students at the Institute. The purpose of John’s masterclass was to provide the students with expert feedback on the scripts they have written for their Film Project Module, which they will subsequently develop into industry standard short films. John spoke

John Moore (centre) pictured with DkIT President, Michael Mulvey, and Lorcan Dunne, Programme Director openly to students and staff about his experiences in the film industry both as a director and a writer. He provided some advice to students on how to prepare for a career in film. “Students entering this industry need to be ruthless in educating

themselves with the latest technology that is out there. What is needed is hard work. A lot of offcampus hard work, volunteering, side jobs all of that stuff that helps develop you as a person and enhance your skills and your knowledge is key.”

In preparation for the workshop, John spends time reading through all of the scripts provided by third and fourth year students and provided an honest critique on their work. Later in the year he will present the Annual John Moore Film Award via video link to the winning short film. During his visit John spoke about why he continues to support DkIT. Speaking during John’s visit, Lorcan Dunne, Programme Director on the BA (Hons) in Film & Television Production also added, “It is an honour and pleasure to welcome John Moore to our campus. The masterclass provides a valuable learning experience for our students to receive feedback and guidance from a film-maker with such a wealth of global experience. John is a fantastic Ambassador for our region and for Irish film-making today.”

St Louis students take to the stage

It’s show time once more in St Louis Dundalk. The current TY Class of 2019 have been treading the boards, dancing their socks off and singing sweet tunes since just after Mid-Term last November

in order to wow audiences with their performance of “All Shook Up” due to take place over three nights in March – Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14 at 7:30pm. Directors of the

production this year, Ms Elaine Byrne, Ms Siobhán Higgins and Ms Kate O’ Byrne are delighted with the efforts made by the girls and looking forward to the final product. “Although “All Shook Up” has been done locally

by others in recent times we still chose it as we think we put an individual slant on all of our shows here at St Louis. The audition process is very protracted so that we give every girl a chance to shine. Each

year we find new stars, people who have never before been on a stage, and that lengthy audition process is what makes the production so effective,” said Elaine Byrne. “All 85 girls in TY are in the show, even if they have other roles in costume, props and sets. It is an essential part of the experience that every girl is part of our cast, so they can all experience the joy of performance,” she added According to Kate O’ Byrne the choreography is a joint effort between students and teachers. “We look to the girls for inspiration with dance moves. So many of them have a huge wealth of experience in this area so we like to give them the chance to use it and take part ownership of the process of staging a musical” Fifth years play a vital role in the production too. They are the stage managers, help on sound and lighting and also with makeup and hair.

Blood Red Lines comes to An Tain Theatre

Playhouse Theatre, Derry, brings its powerful new production, Blood Red Lines, to An Táin Arts Centre for one night only on Saturday March 9. In this new production, those with lived experience of the tragedies of South Armagh and Border counties in the darkest days of The Troubles has shared their stories for a new truth recovery arts initiative. In the play, survivors and former combatants wrestle with the complexity of how and what to tell the next

generation, their individual rights set against the refusal of the state to share the truth, growing anxiety about the effect Brexit will have on peace… and the impact upon their own lives of the events they endured. Blood Red Lines is part of a wider ‘Border Stories’ programme, delivered by the Theatre and Peacebuilding Academy in Spring 2019, to foreground stories related to The Troubles in the South Armagh and Border Counties region.

Director of An Táin Arts Centre, Paul Hayes says “Coming mere weeks before Brexit, the programming of this production couldn’t be more timely. Playhouse are a wonderful company and this is sure to be a thought provoking piece of theatre”. Blood Red Lines comes to An Táin Arts Centre on Saturday 9th March at 8pm. Tickets are FREE but booking is required. You can book at the box office on Crowe Street, over the phone on 042 9332332 or online www.antain.ie

Michael comes out on top at Dundalk

Michael Browne took full advantage of an early start and dry round as he led the field home in Sunday’s latest round of the Winter Series sponsored by Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock. The first 18 hole competition of the year produced some hot scoring on a day when those still on the course after midday had to contend with a constant downpour to the finish. The winner had no such problems as he teed off bright and early at 7.30am and had returned an impressive gross score of 45pts long before the first drops of rain fell from the grey sky. Browne, who plays off 22, was deducted one point for a previous Winter Series prize but his nett score of 44pts was good enough to take top prize from 17 handicapper Fergal McKen-

na who finished on 43pts after also receiving a one point deduction but managed to hold off Anthony O’Donoghue (13) on countback thanks to an impressive 24pts over the back nine. Brian Renaghan (5) came next on 42pts with Sean Quigley (18) taking fifth on 41pts as his back nine score of 23pts proved decisive on countback. Caolan Rafferty has moved up to 38th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings following his semi-final finish at the South African Amateur Championship. Caolan was in action last week at the South African Strokeplay Championship where he finished joint 11th. Congratulations to Ciaran Johnston and Zara Wadding who have been selected as Boys and Girls Captains respectively for the coming year.

AA’S PROS AND CONS OF AN ELECTRIC VAN

Pros of Electric Vans 1.—Financial Assistance: In order to help people who may be considering going electric, a number of grants are available. Firstly, you may be eligible for a purchase grant of up to €3,800, as well as VRT relief of anywhere up to €5,000. If you go one step further and choose to install a fast-charge point in your home or place of work, you may also be eligible for an additional grant of €600. 2.—Cut Down Running Costs: Most vans in Ireland are dieselpowered, but on a cost-per-mile basis electric vans are significantly cheaper to run. According to the ESB’s calculator, a van-owner driving 650km a week would spend just €8 on running costs per week. This compares to weekly running costs of €51 for a diesel-powered vehicle and €70 for a petrol-powered vehicle. While you need to bear in mind that the ESB’s calculator is for cars as opposed to vans, going electric would likely lower your weekly running costs significantly. 3.—Improved Performance… And Improving Further: In a short space of time, electric vans have improved significantly and further improvements can only be expected in the future. Particularly for those driving primarily in urban areas, electric vans are more capable of generating instant torque, which allows for smoother acceleration and gear changes, making getting form job to job much easier.

If you’re considering a switch away from your diesel van you need to weigh up the pros and cons carefully.

YOUR NEW BABY IS READY FOR DELIVERY. ŠKODA KODIAQ available now from €339 per month.

Potential Cons 1.—Range Anxiety: One of the big drawbacks where electric vehicles are concerned, they are still not capable of travelling as far on a single charger as a diesel van could travel on a full tank. While the technology is continually improving, for now electric vans remain more suited to those working primarily in urban areas. 2.—Charging Time Vs. A Fill-up: While charging points are becoming more readily available in Ireland, even the fastest charging units would take on average 30 minutes to bring an electric car to 80% power and longer where a van is concerned. While this is less of a concern if you’re primarily driving short distances and likely to mostly charge your van at home, if you cover greater distances during your working day then electric may not be for you just yet. 3.—Weight: One of the main drawbacks with electric vans is the size and weight of the battery required to power them. While a traditional van will normally have a payload limit of 3,500kg, due to the space taken up by the battery an electric van will likely only have a payload limit of 2,500kg. Is An Electric Van Right For Me? If you’re considering a switch away from your diesel van, then you need to weigh up the above pros and cons carefully. An electric van may be a viable option for you if and of the following apply to you: 1.—You’re based in an urban area and most of your work is carried out in the city. 2.—You generally don’t cover more than approximately 130km on a daily basis. For example, you primarily work on a site close to your home. 3.—The load than you carry in your van does not exceed 2,500kg.

Introducing the New KODIAQ, it’s not only ŠKODA’s largest SUV but its first car with 7 seats. It delivers on ŠKODA’s usual qualities of practicality, thoughtful design, as well as innovative connectivity solutions that are sure to make family life that little bit sweeter.
