The parents of Zoe Murphy have thanked the people of Dundalk for helping them raise €100,000 which will enable their two-year old daughter Zoe to travel to America for a life changing operation.

Lynda Bannon and Eamon Murphy stated that they were forever in debt to the kind people of Dundalk and described the town as unstoppable when one of their own needs help.

Two-year old Zoe Murphy was born

with quadriplegia and cerebral palsy at 21 months old and as a result suffers with spasticity and restricted movement.

Zoe’s parents Lynda Bannon and Eamon Murphy were told by doctors that their daughter faced the prospect of being in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Weapons find in Omeath

A Garda operation took place last Friday in Omeath as part of ongoing investigations targeting the activities of dissident Republican groups.

As part of the investigation a search operation commenced on Friday morning on lands near Omeath on the Cooley peninsula.

During the searches to date Gardaí have recovered a substantial quantity of ammunition of varied calibre along with a mortar tube (pending examination by Garda ballistics experts). Army EOD are currently assisting at the site and a cordon is currently in place. The search is expected to continue into tomorrow.

Meanwhile an 18year old male appeared before a special sitting of Drogheda District Court charged in connection with an attack on a number of vehicles on the Point Road, in the early hours of Sunday morning (February 3). The suspect was charged with 23 counts of criminal damage.

There were a number of burglaries reported around Dundalk this week including two which occurred in estates on the Avenue Road as well as one in Greenore and one in Ardee. There were also items stolen from a licensed premises in Dundalk earlier on in the week.

On January 31 a male was set upon by two unidentified males as

he was walking home along Rampart Lane.

The man was punched in the face before having his wallet stolen by

the men who ran away from the scene. Any witnesses to this attack should be reported to Dundalk Garda station.

Louth 2019 Creative Ireland Community Grant Fund The Louth Creative Ireland Community Grant Fund will provide support to local and community event organisers in the research, planning and delivery of creative projects that have the capacity to develop into the future.

Glitz and glamour at Trashion Fashion 2019 Local fashionistas were once again treated to an evening of glitz and glamour when the students of Louth showcased their remarkable works of recycled couture at the seventh annual ‘Trashion Fashion’ event which took place at the Carrickdale Hotel on Wednesday January 23. A celebration of creativity and sustainability, the event continues to attract large numbers with 140 students taking part and 40 incredible outfits. The golden rule of the competition is that they are made from 100% recycled materials which have lived out their intended purpose.

The fashion competition is open to all secondary school students in Louth. The challenge posed to students is to create a couture outfit of any shape and size made by the least couture of materials – junk. The students get their hands on industrial, commercial and domestic waste products and transform them into fashion masterpieces.

Used coffee cups, shuttlecocks, and watches, not to mention fake paper money were just some of the unusual materials used to create these fantastic designs. The students demonstrated a high level of social awareness, with the themes of the outfits highlighting a wide range of topical societal issues

such as homelessness, the Magdalene Laundries, mental health and the damaging effects of ocean pollution.

The event was presented by Mona Daly, while the unenviable task of judging the competition fell to Deirdre Sweeney, Principal of Scoil Mhuire na Trocaire, Ardee, Caitriona McGee, a veteran of the fashion industry, Stefania Egan, a successful local model, Maire Mulligan, retired local teacher and Willie Martin, the proprietor of V & W Recycling.

Coláiste Rís and St Vincent’s Secondary School were both delighted to have four winners on the night. Emily Lucid was proud to model her winning entry “Time Traveller’s Wife” for St. Vincent’s, with Isabelle Garvey picking up a prize for the school with “Flower Power”. Fáilte Ireland and Louth businesses join forces to bring the county’s ancient story to life Fáilte Ireland has joined forces with businesses across Ireland’s Ancient East to develop a long-term tourism plan focused on experiences which bring the region’s ancient history to life.

Over 60 tourism businesses, including businesses from Louth, took part in a bespoke workshop at the Knightsbrook Hotel in Trim today to develop stories and experiences centred around the ancient heritage of their area, helping to create a more connected visitor experience in towns across Ireland’s Ancient East and, in turn, drive increased visitor numbers to the region.

With ancient heritage –from Neolithic tombs to standing stones and stone circles - playing a fundamental role in the region’s tourism offering, counties including Louth, Monaghan, Meath, Cavan and Westmeath have been identified as having potential to evolve as areas with a strong cluster of ancient attractions that can draw international visitors.

This work will feed into the ‘Ancient – Visitor Experience Development Plan’, which local tourism businesses and stakeholders are working closely on, and will play a key role in extending the season and increasing dwell time in the region.

Speaking about the workshop, Head of Ireland’s Ancient East at Fáilte Ireland, Jenny De Saulles said: “The stories and history behind the amazing variety of ancient heritage in this part of Ireland’s Ancient East are a true gem in the region’s international offering. Sites like Newgrange, Hill of Uisneach, Brú na Bóinne and Cavan Geopark are hugely appealing to our core overseas markets. In order to encourage them to visit the region and stay in the area for longer, we need to ensure that we can offer a really compelling visitor experience in terms of storytelling and bringing the area’s rich history to life – key elements of the Ireland’s Ancient East brand.

“Visitor numbers and revenue generated by tourism across Ireland’s Ancient East are already on a strong footing through the brand, and the long-term ‘Ancient Visitor Experience Development Plan’ will help to bring even more visitors here.

Thanks to all the local businesses who contributed to the plan - we will continue to work alongside the industry to improve visitor experiences across the region.”

The ancient experience is one of the key Ireland’s Ancient East Visitor Experience Development Plans currently underway and in being created to develop brilliant visitor experiences in the region so they are motivating and appealing to international markets.

The Ancient experience will be brought to life by: • Guided tours in ancient heritage sites, in local towns and overnight stays • Evening experiences - banqueting and dance as well as musical entertainment • Costumed interpretation and reenactments • Integrated visitor experiences by curating links and sharing stories between visitor • sites • Working with industry to tell the Ancient Story Today’s workshop is one in a series of sessions taking place across the Ireland’s Ancient East region as part of the Ancient Visitor Experience Development plan over the coming months.

Tributes have been paid to a young Blackrock man who passed away following a road traffic accident in America.

Mark Sands, a 21-year-old student from Seafield Road passed away in hospital in Austin, Texas, on Sunday morning following the accident on the previous Friday.

A student at UCD, Mark had been taking part in an exchange programme in American when the tragedy occurred.

Mark is survived by his parents Paddy and Ruth, along with his sisters Laura and Aoife.

A GoFundMe page was set up for Mark’s family and has already raised €11,000. The tribute on the page read as follows: “If you’ve ever been lucky enough to meet Mark you’ve surely noticed his constant smile.

He was one of the most charming and amusing people you will ever meet.

Children’s fitness initiative returns to Dundalk

On foot of a number of successful visits to Dundalk schools in 2018, Fyffes ‘Fit Squad’ initiative is returning to the town and surrounding area with an ambitious five events planned throughout the month of February.

In total, over 600 pupils will participate in the hour-long, interactive session aimed at promoting healthy eating and an active lifestyle, especially amongst young people.

Cllr Yore supports proposal to ban posters Independent Councillors Jim Tenanty and Maeve Yore as active members of Louth County Council Housing, Community, Planning and Emergency Services Strategic Policy Committee supported and proposed the policy brought before them today in relation to the removal of implied consent to erect election posters on Louth County Council Property and Infrastructure. It will now go before full Council for debate and possible adoption in February 2019.

The reasons given by the Community Section of Louth County Council include creating and maintaining attractive places across the County in which we

all live, work and visit. The environmental impact of single use plastics, health and safety concerns including posters obscuring visibility and hazards to visually impaired.

Commenting on the proposal Cllr Tenanty Chairperson of Ardee Tidy Towns said he fully supports this policy. He said it builds on the success of the voluntary code of practice requested

by Tidy Towns groups in 12 locations across Louth during the last general election and referendum campaigns when they requested all candidates not to erect posters within 50km speed limit zones and achieved 100% success.

MAD YT head for Prague MAD Youth Theatre heading off to visit Prague today (Wednesday February 6) for what will be their third visit to the Class in Action International Youth Theatre Festival.

They will be competing against top quality groups both English speaking and English as a second language youth drama groups from Russia, France, Poland, and the UK to name a few.

The 12 young actors attending the festival devised a new piece called ‘Twenty One Nineteen’ a Post-apocalyptic Dystopian play that explores power, migration and climate change with a dash of unrest, set on Mars.

The group did some brilliant fundraising to get to Prague including a festival in their base on Earl Street, a day of collecting and doing a freeze mob in

Marshes Shopping Centre and a day of bag packing at Tesco Extra. They also received donations from local businesses.

MAD YT are all very excited to be taking this trip to Prague again, to also reconnect with some old friends and make new ones.

They also look forward to performing the play back in town Members of MAD YT who are travelling to Prague after they return.

Spirits high for return of Special Olympics

Spirits were high and smiles all around at Dundalk Special Olympics Club, first training session for 2019.

The club trains every Saturday at Blackrock Community Centre from 11.30am to 1pm Athletes, parents and volunteers were thrilled to see each other and catch up on all the news.

After a well-deserved rest over Christmas, head coach Sean Nulty with assistant coach John Farrell, took the Athletes enjoying the return of the Special athletes through their paces for a warm-up.

“Getting back into a training routine is very good and essential for our athletes, although it can take a few Saturdays for some of them to settle back in,” said Chairperson Ailish McArdle.

Volunteers, quick and effective, changed and set up new exercises as athletes helped one another, fitting bibs that would divide them into teams.

The team challenge created great excitement as four teams challenged each other’s skills by retrieving bean bags.

laghan is pleased to see the athletes back, but is concerned about the lack of volunteers involved.

St Mary’s College hosted Pool B of the All Ireland Playoffs on Sunday January 20 and they made home advantage count as they booked their place in the AllIreland semi-final.

HOW TO DRIVE ON A MOTORWAY

We know that many of you are frustrated by poor driving habits on c our motorways, so here’s a reminder n habout how to use motorway lanes ecorrectly.

2The basics The maximum speed limit on a fmotorway is 120km per hour un-less: • there are signs indicating another l speed limit, for example due to - roadworks or bad weather -• you are driving a vehicle that is , subject to a lower limit such as , a bus or truck, towing a trailer, caravan or horse/cattle box e On the M50, the limit is 100km -per hour between J3 M1 and J13 g Sandyford, while on the section be7 tween the Port Tunnel and the M1 Interchange the limit is 80km per ehour.

The limit for vehicles towing a -trailer is 80km per hour, for HGVs yit’s 90km per hour, and for buses it’s 100km per hour (in all cases, unless ra lower limit applies to all vehicles). d You must not enter a motorway rif: k• you are a learner driver or do not hold a full licence for the category l of vehicle you are driving .• your vehicle cannot travel or 7 maintain a speed of at least 50km per hour —• your vehicle has an engine capacr ity of 50cc or less , • you drive a tractor that cannot n travel at or maintain a speed of at least 50km per hour l • - your vehicle does not use inflated - tyres -• you are walking, cycling or moving animals • you drive a motorised wheelchair Keep left - The image above shows the layout &of a three-lane motorway. r The basic principle is that you ashould always drive in the left lane -(lane 1) unless you need to overtake a slower vehicle or vehicles, lor unless the lane is blocked. Once tyou have finished overtaking, move .from the right lane (lane 2) back kinto the left lane as soon as it is safe to do so.

On a three-lane motorway, there is an extra overtaking lane (lane .3), but you should still keep left as much as possible. i.e. don’t drive in the right lane if the middle lane (lane 2) is empty, or in the middle lane if the left lane is empty.

You may also need to move out of the left lane at a junction, to make room for vehicles merging from the on ramp. Again, move back into the left lane as soon as it is available.

It’s an offence to drive on the hard shoulder unless in an emergency or if ordered to do so by An Garda Síochána. You could incur penalty points.

Some vehicles are not permitted to use the right lane: HGVs, and any vehicle towing a trailer, horsebox or caravan. An exception is made where there is no other lane available due to an obstruction.

Safety first When driving on a motorway, you should be checking your mirrors on a constant basis, as the picture around you will be changing all the time.

Before overtaking or changing lanes, remember ‘mirror, signal, mirror, manoeuvre’. Check your mirrors and your blind spot, then put on your indicator to let drivers behind you know that you wish to move. Move smoothly into the new lane, making sure to leave enough distance from the vehicles in front of and behind you. Remember to turn off your indicator once you have completed the manoeuvre.

Stay out of other drivers’ blind spots, especially large vehicles like trucks.

You should only pass a slower vehicle on its right, unless traffic is moving in slow queues and the traffic queue on your right is travelling more slowly than you are. Passing on the left in normal traffic flow is known as undertaking and can be very dangerous One at a time When changing lanes, you should only move one lane at a time, treating each one as an individual manoeuvre. Never drive straight across a lane to get to the next one.

Keep your distance Always make sure you leave enough distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front so that you can stop safely. In dry conditions, use the two-second rule – make sure that two seconds have elapsed between the vehicle in front passing a specific point, and your vehicle getting to it. When the road is wet, make sure you are four seconds behind.

Auxiliary lane On some motorways (for example the M50), there is an extra lane known as the auxiliary lane. It’s separated from the main carriageway by road markings that are closer together than the broken white lines that divide the other lanes and it links the motorway’s off- and onramps. It enables traffic to prepare to exit the motorway well in advance of a junction, and it also gives extra room for merging traffic to join the main carriageway.

Following the recent drop in temperatures, AA Ireland is reminding motorists of the importance of car maintenance during the winter season.

In the first days of the recent cold snap, AA Rescue – the organisation’s breakdown assistance provider – experienced a significant increase in callouts, largely as a result of battery-related issues. The AA is advising motorists that older or weaker batteries can often struggle to start during cold weather, particularly following even a brief period of the car going unused.

“While the drop in temperatures is expected at this time of year, we had been experiencing relatively mild weather so far this winter and, as a result, some of us may have forgotten to ensure that our car is fully prepared for the colder conditions,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “If your car is overdue a service now is certainly the time to get that done, particularly if you have noticed some difficulties starting the car first thing in the morning recently, but we would also encourage people to carry out basic checks, such as ensuring all your lights are working. The darker conditions combined with intermittent rainfall can make visibility quite poor so it’s important to light up, slow down and be on the lookout for vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.”

“Whenever we see temperatures dip, a spike in batteryrelated breakdowns almost certainly follows and this is particularly true when the cold snap overlaps with a time where people may not be using their car as much, such as a weekend. Ahead of this weekend, we would advise people who are planning to park the car on Friday after work and not go near it until Monday morning to be aware of the risks of battery faults during cold weather.

60% fear driving in icy conditions Separately, a recent survey of over 5,000 motorists undertaken by the AA found that almost 60% of drivers describe themselves as very nervous when it comes to driving in icy conditions. When asked about the possibility of driving in icy weather, 59.97% of respondents stated that such a scenario would make them very nervous, with a further 29.75% admitting they would be somewhat nerv-

ous if forced to do so.

If you encounter ice on the roads, the AA’s advice is to reduce your speed and avoid making any harsh manoeuvres or braking suddenly. Motorists are also advised that stopping distances can be 10 times longer when driving in ice or snow, making leaving additional distance between yourself and other road users of vital importance.

“Thankfully the current conditions and what is expected during the week ahead is nowhere near what we experienced in February and March of last year, but it is important to remain vigilant on the road and to have a little bit extra consideration for all other road users,” Faughnan added. “Reducing your speed and adapting your behaviour to the local weather conditions will help ensure you complete your journey safely, while helping to protect vulnerable road users at the same time.”
