There was a huge party on the Point Road on Sunday evening as the Sean O’Mahonys claimed their first ever Joe Ward Cup following a thrilling victory against Ardee St Mary’s. The men from the Quay are renowned for their battling qualities and they had to dig deep to come back from four points down before clinching a two point victory thanks to Conor Crawley’s late goal. That goal sparked scenes of jubilations in the stands as the O’Mahonys supporters basked in the glory of their very first Joe Ward cup. Terrifying ordeal at bingo robbery By Paul Byrne

Bingo players in Dundalk were involved in a terrifying incident last Wednesday evening as four masked men carrying baseball bats and lump hammers threatened staff before making off with a sum of cash.

The raid happened in the Let’s Bingo premises on the Racecourse road at approximately 9pm and there were over 100 patrons in attendance when the armed men came into the building. According to operations manager David Bell the incident was very frightening for both staff and customers and he was thankful that nobody was hurt during the incident. “The four men came in with baseball bats and lumphammers and screamed at the customers to stay down and be quiet. “They then made a

bee line to the two cash points in the room and instructed staff members to hand over the money to them which they did. “It was a terrifying ordeal for all involved and we had to close early to allow Gardaí to have full access to the scene where they interviewed staff members and examined the scene. “I believe that they are going through the CCTV footage now so hopefully these mindless criminals can be caught. “In the meantime we thank all of our customers for their understanding and appreciate all the calls and messages

we received in the aftermath of the burglary. The main thing we are concerned with is that nobody was hurt or injured. We are determined that such mindless criminals do not deter us from our daily enjoyment at the club and we planned to be back open on Thursday September 29 where it will be business as usual,” promised David. It is understood that the men left the scene in a silver car. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9388400.

Following the incident An Post sent out the following note to customers affected by the incident. “Dear Customer “Please find a Standard Post item addressed to you. Regrettably, due to a particular incident within the area, delivery of your item has been significantly delayed. “Please accept my sincere apologies for any upset and inconvenience caused. “We are actively investigating the circumstances which led to the unfortunate occurrence and I assure you that the situation is being treated with the seriousness it deserves.” An Post had previously released a statement saying that it “regrets to confirm that a serious matter has come to light in Dundalk. “An amount of mail was recently

found at a location in the greater Dundalk area and the circumstances of the find are currently subject to an investigation by An Post and the Gardaí. “Given the ongoing investigation, we are not in a position to comment any further at this time.” A statement from An Post said they are working closely with the Gardaí while emphasising that their top priority was to regain the confidence and trust of their customers. “The Garda investigation into the recent discovery of undelivered mail at a private house in Dundalk is ongoing. All the recovered mail has been delivered to the affected customers with an explanatory note apologising for the inconvenience caused to them. An Post is working closely with the Gardai and while we cannot comment any further on the matter at this time, the security of mail and the trust of our customers is the top priority for the Company and for our staff.”

people as possible to get active at least once a week and this week saw the first school wide activity take place. On Thursday last a House Walk took place. The task was to walk the round of the school from back gate to back gate, extra points awarded for speed, to encourage those who are fitter to go a little faster. For a distance of 2.1kms 3 points were awarded for a sub 15 minute result, 2 for a sub 20 and 1 point for over 20. There was a great turn out with 101 students in total, representing every year, and 15 staff. Of those participating 34% did the walk in less than 15 minutes, 35% took 15-20 mins to complete the walk and 37% took 20 minutes or more to walk the block. Many more students were involved with golf, fitness training and and those also count towards the house points, so over 200 students were active and industrious that afternoon. Jenny Spain of the PE Dept was thrilled with the turnout. “It’s all about doing a little often. If we can encourage our students to participate on a small scale while at school they are far more likely to get involved in exercise at home and in later life. The staff is also wonderful to be involved as they are leading the way, showing students that an active life is important for all of us, young and – well a little less young”, she added.

“Roaming is for Travellers” Says European Commission

The EU Commission recently announced a revised draft for roaming rules and said that: "Roaming is for travellers. The new draft (rules) allow operators to check usage patterns to prevent the "Roam like at Home" mechanism from being abused." The announcement came after the Commissioners' weekly meeting and follows President Juncker's remarks in his State of the Union address that the new roaming rules must be consumer-friendly. The rules must be finalised in time for the "end of roaming charges" scheduled for June 2017. There should be no limits in terms of timing or volume imposed on consumers when using their mobile devices abroad in the EU. At the same time, the new approach provides a solid safeguard mechanism for operators against potential abuses. This new mechanism will be based on principle of residence or stable links European consumers may have with any EU Member State (frequent and substantial presence in the Member State of the roaming provider, for example). The College of Commissioners discussed draft rules that will enable all travellers using a SIM card of a Member State in which they reside or with which they have stable links to use their mobile device in any other EU country, just as they would at home. Examples of "stable links" include work commuters, expats who are frequently present in their home country or Erasmus students. Europeans will pay domestic prices when they call, text or go online from their mobile devices and will have full access to other parts of their mobile subscription (e.g. monthly data package). The College of Commissioners will adopt the final proposal by 15 December 2016, following feedback from BEREC (Body of European Regulators in Electronic Communications), Member States and all interested parties.

Friday 16 September 2016 was a special day for four Scoil Uí Mhuirí students who were awarded for academic excellence in the Leaving Certificate Examinations 2016 by LMETB. The students awarded were Enda Mc Kenna, Stephen Foley, Sean Malone and Laura Byrne who gathered with their principal Fiona Kindlon and their families to receive their award in Na-

Speaking about the students, Ms Kindlon explained that during their time in the school, these students were exemplary students who were enthusiastic, talented, focused and committed students who consistently worked to a very high standard. They excelled in academic and non academic areas both within and outside school.

Driver gave his keys to Gardai

A man who initially pleaded not guilty to a drink driving charge was banned from the road for three years. Ricky McKeown of Summerhill, Knockbridge, Dundalk, was observed by Gardai reversing from a parking space in an erratic manner at Townparks on June 18 this year at 2.45am. When the defendant saw the patrol car he pulled back

into the space, approached the Gardai and handed them the keys of his car. He was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a breath sample showed he was over the limit. Mr McKeown, who had no previous convictions, had no licence and wasn’t insured to drive the car. After hearing the evidence of the Gardai, solici-

tor, Conor MacGuill, said his client would accept the evidence. He stated that the defendant was an apprentice electrician and the loss of his licence would be of great inconvenience. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a fine of €400 and disqualified for three years, while taking the no insurance charge into consideration.

It is a family peer-support group in a place where family members (concerned persons) can come and talk about addiction issues in a safe, non judgmental and caring environment. Counseling is available on a one to one basis if needed. Respite is available annually for family members as a group event facilitated by counselors.

Care worker found guilty of assault A care worker who denied slapping a resident at a care home was convicted of assault at Dundalk District Court. Toyin Oresanya with an address at 1 Elm Park, Johnstown, Navan, Co Meath, claimed that she had simply put her hand on the resident’s hand in order to stop him from throwing a piece of paper. Four staff members from St Mary’s Drumcar Hospital Drumcar gave evidence that on February 16 last year they had seen the defendant stand up and strike the resident with medium force and tell him not to throw paper. The incident occurred in the music room of the hospital when an object described as a sensory frisbee or tambourine was thrown by a resident and struck another on the head. A third resident then threw a piece of paper which struck a staff member on the face. Ms Oresanya said she was playing piano at the time and saw the resident was about to throw another piece of paper. She was concerned that this

might cause further agitation to the injured resident and put her hand out to prevent him throwing the paper and told him to stop. She stated that she did not hit him and she had not stood up. Barrister James Egan stated that there was no malice in his client’s actions and that she was simply acting to stop further distress. Insp Martin Beggy pointed out that the defendant was in charge of a vulnerable adult and four witnesses had said there was a double impact. It was a chastisement but also a physical assault. Judge Flann Brennan ruled that evidence had been given that corrective slaps were administered and as he was not satisfied there was any defence he must convict. Mr Egan stated that his 44-yearold client is a mother of two who is still working in the industry but this case will have an impact on her work record. Judge Brennan put the case back to November 16 for a Probation Report.

Cyclo Cross has arrived in Dundalk

Strong beers and waffles are not the only Belgian traditions gaining popularity in Ireland, as the sport of cyclocross continues to grow here. Originally conceived by the cycling-mad Belgians as an off season form of racing to help keep riders in shape, the events are run, typically in a park, over a mixture of grass, tarmac and forest trails. If the park allows you may even find yourself battling through sand. Cuchulainn Cycling Club now have their own Cyclo Cross course. Round 1 kicked off on September 22 and saw a resounding win for Gerry McCabe.

Second place went to Kristaps Pumpers, with Aaronn McCann in third. First woman home was Jessica Jackson of Dunleer’s White River Wheelers. Outside of the local league each province is hosting at least one league, with the main Ulster league proving to be the most popular with the Dundalk riders. In the first round of the aforementioned league, Cuchulainn had five riders in the support race as well as Rhiannon Dolan in the under 10 girls race. A piece of Irish martial art history was made this weekend when two members of Dundalk Thai Boxing, Peter Conroy and Aidan Heslin, travelled to Gáldar, Gran Canaria, Spain to participate in the European Muay Boran Championships. Peter and

Aidan are the first ever fighters from the whole island of Ireland to be selected to represent Ireland at this level. After months of arduous preparation assisted by coaches Gerry Ross and Jay Brady and with national team coach Brian Gallagher,

the Dundalk duo took to the challenge with relish and gusto and in the process did their club, town and country, proud with Peter Conroy taking home silver in the 63.5Kg weight category and Aidan Heslin taking bronze in the 60Kg Category.

There has been great activity around the Redemptorist Church and monastery over the past months but the scaffolding and hoarding at the front of the Church has been taken down, not because the project is finished, but because Novena time has come. Beginning on Saturday October 8 and ending on Sunday 16, Dundalk and the surrounding counties will celebrate the great Festival of Faith that is the Solemn Novena in honour of St Gerard Majella. In line with Pope Francis in announcing this year as‘the extraordinary jubilee year of the theme for the St. Gerard Novena is ‘Mercy- the Face of God’. The daily preaching themes are all calling us to a deeper understanding of the Mercy of God and encouraging us to be people of mer-

cy in our daily lives and in turn agents of mercy in the world. Novena director, Fr. Michael Cusack, expects that there may even be bigger crowds attending the novena this year. “Despite the talk of being ‘over the recession’ so many people are truly struggling and needing support. The most important message that the novena should bring is a message of hope and consolation. This novena is always a time of great solidarity and really ignites the community spirit in the people of Dundalk and the surrounding counties, towns and villages. Knife was used for picnic during Christmas week

A man told Dundalk District Court that a knife found in the car he was driving had been there following a family picnic a week earlier. Evidence was given that on December 27 Gardai searched the car being driven by Erdogan Yildrim of 89 Castleross, Castletown Road, Dundalk, with the defendant telling them that he had been on a

family picnic the week before. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his 20-year-old client accepted the facts but he had a lawful reason to be in possession of the knife as it was for a recreational purpose. Mr Yildrim stated that his family regularly went for picnics no matter what time of year and that he would have no other reason to

carry a knife. Insp Martin Beggy pointed out that Gardai had not found any other items related to a picnic during the search. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he was satisfied there was no good reason to have the knife and that he would convict. He adjourned the case to December 21 for a Probation Report.

Bryan prepares to take on the News Brief world’s best triathletes in Hawaii in Road ban for Dundalk’s Bryan McCrystal is preparing to take on the best in the world having qualified for the Ironman World Championships which will take place this weekend in Kona, Hawaii. Bryan qualified for the World Championships thanks to a magnificent performance at Ironman UK where he finished first in his age group and fifth overall. The triathlon consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 half-marathon and is considered to be one of the very toughest endurance tests in the world. The former Leeds Utd footballer was obviously delighted to qualify for the biggest race in the triathlon’s calendar describing it as the biggest result of his career. “Yes it’s a race that was on my radar for a while now. It’s the World Championships so racing against the best is always good. Coming into this year I was confident had I put out a good performance I would qualify but you never know in Ironman”, explained Bryan. “I am currently out in Kona trying to get

settled. I arrived here a couple of weeks before the race to get used to the heat and to be honest I haven’t quite settled yet but I’m hopeful I will get more settled in the next few days. The temperatures are in the mid-30 here which will make the race even tougher but I’ve raced in heat before and had some good and bad results but apart from the heat this island throws up all sorts of obstacles”, he added. “With regards to expectations for the race I want a solid race and to be smart on the day. I always say that. I can’t expect my first outing here

A man who pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge was disqualified from driving at Dundalk District Court. Sergejs Buhtijarovs of 2 Garrybawn, Tom Bellew Avenue, Dundalk, was also fined €300 arising from the incident on October 20 last year. The court heard that the defendant was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station. Although he didn’t co-operate with the intoxiliser process, he provided a urine sample which illustrated the was over the limit. Solicitor, Niall Breen, stated that the 39-year-old was originally from Latvia but was in Ireland for five years. He was unemployed and had applied for Social Welfare. Judge Flann Brennan postponed the ban until March 1 next year.

Dundalk FC create more history By Paul Byrne The history makers were at it again last Thursday evening as Dundalk FC added yet another glorious chapter to what has become one of the most memorable seasons in the club’s rich history. Ciaran Kilduff who headed home the late equaliser against AZ Alkamaar was once again the hero of the hour as he powered home a close range volley from a wonderful Daryl Horgan cross to give the Lilywhites the lead in the 73rd minute. The vast majority of the 5,500 fans in Tallaght stadium went ballistic as Kilduff celebrated what would turn out to be the winning goal against the Israeli champions.

Tallaght is fast becoming a home away from home for Dundalk supporters having witnessed their side win the league in the South Dublin venue last October while also being the scene for that wonderful evening in August when Bate Borisov were sent packing 3-0 in the Champions League playoff. Dundalk now lie in second place in Group D on four points and although there is still plenty of work to do who would bet against this special group actually going on to qualify from their group. Amy also picked up the boxer of the tournament award as she beat European silver medallist Chaz O’Neil and former senior champion Joanne Lambe en route to the title. Man who assaulted two Gardai given chance to avoid jail A man who assaulted two Gardai at Dundalk Garda Station was given the chance to avoid jail after being given a suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court. Mantas Bielskis of 39 Glenwood, Dublin Road, Dundalk, was arrested af-

Case dismissed

A woman had a drink driving charge dismissed at Dundalk District Court after Gardai conceded they would have difficulty prosecuting the case. Jennifer O’Brien of Lower Ballymakellett, Ravensdale, Dundalk, had been charged after being stopped by Gardai at Park St on October 19 last year. “We were absolutely delighted by the response we got to the 5K. St Helena Park was packed out and the race went very well. There were a number of reasons why we decided to organise the 5k the main one being that a healthy school is a happy school. “We kind of took a threepronged approach to that slogan during September encouraging students to adapt a healthy approach to exercise, food and study. The girls have got on board with what we have been doing and because it has gone so well we will probably make this an annual event. “I have so many people to thank because the whole community has really got behind us for this 5k and without them we simply couldn’t have done it.

It truly was a community wide effort and we’re grateful for all the help we received. “It really was a very positive experience for the whole school and as well as all the benefits for our students it also acted as a fundraiser for what will eventually become an allweather multi-purpose outdoor facility. That is still very much in the planning stages but we will sit down soon and work out exactly what we need and what we can fit into the school. Finally, I would like to thank the parents committee for all their Trojan work over the past month in helping us organise the 5k”, added Mrs Matthews.

Dementia Roadshow a success

People affected by dementia, their families, local business and crucial frontline services came together at The Marshes this week in a successful attempt to raise people’s knowledge of the condition in Louth. And the bid to make Louth Ireland’s first dementiafriendly county is now firmly under way. The Dementia Roadshow is a one-day event aimed at removing stigmas in the community and elevating people’s knowledge of the condition – and such was its success that an annual day is now on the cards. The free Roadshow, hosted by Louth Age Friendly County and the Dementia Elevator Programme, featured information on training and awareness programmes, local resources and vital support initiatives for carers. There was also interactive workshops and highlyinformative presentations by the Elevator Team and special guests. Mary Deery, Louth Age Friendly County Co-ordinator, said that the Roadshow was an ideal opportunity for people with dementia, their families, carers and the wider community such as businesses to unite to increase their knowledge of the condition. “Many people with a diagnosis of dementia continue to be able to manage their lives independently or with some degree of support,” said Mary. “The Dementia Roadshow showed how we could develop better individual, community and business awareness and understanding of how dementia might affect someone so we can become less fearful and more supportive. “The Roadshow showcased local projects and supports and put people in touch with vital points of help and information that will make their lives easier”, she stated.

Increase In Cost Of Motoring

The average cost of running a family car for a year is €10,849.42 according to the AA’s annual survey of motoring costs. The total is a significant increase of €255.82 on the same figure for last year, according to the AA’s calculations. For the second year in a row, a major rise in the motor insurance premiums has cost motorists dearly. Despite a large drop in fuel prices, any gains motorists make at the pumps are lost to the 38.6 per cent rise in premiums for the typical motorist. “In a better year we could be talking about the fall in fuel prices.” Says Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “Drivers won’t notice though because of the enormous surge in insurance costs. The insurance crisis is particularly frustrating because much of it is unnecessary. While it is true that motor insurance was losing money a few years ago and the price had to rise a bit, there are thing that Government and the industry could do right now that would pull prices downwards.” In some good news for motorists, fuel prices is down significantly compared to last year. months ago. For a typical motorist in a Band B car that works out at a saving of €196.80 annually. However, they will still pay €1,554 for their year’s fuel, with tax making up more than 60% of this figure. Each year the AA calculates average prices for each of the respective tax bands and illustrates the cost of running an average family car. The cost of running a ‘Band B’ category1 car increased by 0.098% in 2016 when compared to the 2015 figure of €10,593.60. Other motoring costs did not change significantly with only slight adjustments to be made due to changes in inflation and interest rates as outlined by the CSO. This is reflected in the AA’s calculation of the cost of oil,

tyres, servicing, repairs, replacements and garage parking. The AA calculates the annual cost of motoring each year using a holistic figure that includes the obvious things like fuel, insurance, servicing but also factors in a whole range of other costs. These include costs like depreciation and interest charges, as well as replacement for components such as tyres etc over the car’s life. The figure assumes a motorist that buys a new car and retains it for 8 years at an average annual mileage of 16,000 kms. All repairs, replacements and servicing are carried out as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
