By Darren Crawley DUNDALK’S Kate O’Connor has added another remarkable chapter to her glittering athletics career after producing a commanding performance to win heptathlon gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

And next the local medal machine will be looking to make it a scarcely believable seven championship medals in a row as she competes at the European Championships which begin this weekend in Birmingham.

The 25-year-old, who was born in Newry and represents Northern Ireland, delivered an outstanding display across the two-day Commonwealth Games competition last week in Glasgow to finish with 6,569 points, comfortably ahead of England’s Jade O’Dowda on 6,278 points and Australia’s Tori West on 6,104.

For sports fans in Dundalk, where

O’Connor has long been recognised as one of the town’s greatest sporting ambassadors, the victory is another proud milestone in what has become one of the most successful careers ever produced by a local athlete.

Competing in difficult conditions, with persistent rain and cool temperatures affecting performances throughout the championships, O’Connor showed the composure and resilience that have become hallmarks of her career. Although her winning total fell short of the Irish record of 6,714 points that she set in Tokyo last year, it proved more than enough to secure the Commonwealth title.

Speaking after claiming the gold medal, Kate’s father and coach Michael O’Connor couldn’t hide his delight at the achievement.

“When I think back of some of the great Commonwealth Games champions from back when I was growing up; Daley Thompson and the likes, now Kate joins those great champions.”

The victory continues an extraordinary run of success for the Dundalk athlete, who has now won medals at six consecutive major championships. That sequence began in March 2025 with bronze in the pentathlon at the European Indoor Championships before she claimed silver at the World Indoor Championships just weeks later.

Her breakthrough continued last summer when she captured

heptathlon gold at the World University Games before producing the biggest performance of her career to date by winning a silver medal at the World Championships in Tokyo. Earlier this year she added another World Indoor bronze to her collection before now stepping onto the top of the Commonwealth podium for the first time.

The gold also represents redemption after narrowly missing out on the Commonwealth title four years ago, when she claimed silver in 2022.

O’Connor established herself as the athlete to beat during the opening day of competition. She made an impressive start by clocking 13.54 seconds in the 100-metre hurdles before clearing 1.82 metres in the high jump.

A rain-soaked shot put temporarily disrupted her momentum.

Her best effort of 12.85 metres was well below her personal best of 14.70 metres and briefly saw her surrender the overall lead. However, she responded like a champion in the final event of the day, running 24.14 seconds in the 200 metres to reclaim top spot in the standings heading into Wednesday.

The second day belonged almost entirely to the Dundalk athlete.

She strengthened her position with a leap of 6.37 metres in the long jump before producing one of the standout performances of the competition in the javelin, launching the spear an outstanding 52.85 metres to move within touching distance of the gold medal.

By the time the athletes lined up for the concluding 800 metres, O’Connor knew that simply finishing the race would almost certainly secure the title.

Rather than settling for a cautious run, she chose to finish in style.

Kicking clear on the home straight, she crossed the line first in 2:10.45 to win not only the overall competition but also the final event, capping a superb championship in which she won five of the seven

“I really enjoyed that run,” she said afterwards.

“I had the privilege of standing on the line knowing I just had to get around the two laps and I had the gold medal. But I wanted to do a bit more than that and put on a bit of a show.”

Her Northern Ireland teammate Anna McCauley finished eighth overall with 5,944 points.

Over recent years she has inspired countless young athletes through her dedication, consistency and ability to perform on the biggest stages in world athletics.

Michael was understandably full of pride for his daughter’s achievement and spoke of how it is a family effort for them all.

“We are so proud.

One of my jobs is as coach but it is also as a dad. It is a family effort as well – her brother and her sister train with Kate as well so they are all a part of it.”

The heptathlon, widely regarded as one of athletics’ toughest events, demands excellence across seven dis-

ciplines: the 100-metre hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 metres, long jump, javelin and 800 metres. Success requires speed, strength, endurance, power and technical precision, qualities O’Connor has continued to develop throughout her career.

Michael, while he admitted Kate ‘probably went in as favourite’ to the event, it was a new experience for her.

“There’s nothing you can take for granted in events like this. Probably going in as favourite was different and she had to learn how to deal with that.

“Day 1 was tricky, she had a great 200 at the end of it and then just went on a roll.

“The javelin sealed everything.”

Her latest gold medal also enhances her growing reputation as one of Europe’s leading combined-event athletes.

With six successive championship medals now to her name, she has established a level of consistency achieved by very few competitors in the demanding discipline.

There will be little time to celebrate, however, as attention quickly turns to the European Championships in Birmingham in just over two weeks’ time.

The competition is expected to be considerably stronger, with O’Connor entering as the second-highest ranked athlete in the field thanks to her Irish record score of 6,714 points set in Tokyo last year. Only Switzerland’s Annik Kälin, who recently recorded 6,819 points in Germany, heads the rankings.

Michael though knows that the competition goes again and while they are looking forward to the challenge of the competition, he feels that the quality goes up another level.

“There’s no time to wait, we are straight into it again. The Europeans is at the same level as the World Championships and the Olympic games.

“All the best athletes will be there, it is going to be a different kind of examination than the last week but we are looking forward to it.”

Following her Commonwealth triumph, confidence will be high that the Dundalk star can once again challenge for a place on the podium as she continues what is rapidly becoming one of the finest careers ever produced by an athlete from Dundalk.

AS part of an intelligence-led investigation under Operation Tara, personnel attached to the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau conducted an intervention of a vehicle in Co. Meath. Coordinated searches were subsequently conducted in a number of locations in Counties Meath and Louth.

During the course of the operation, Gardaí seized suspected Cocaine and Cannabis with an estimated value of €8.5 million.

Two males (aged in their 30s and 40s) were arrested and are currently detained, pursuant to the provisions of Section 50 of Criminal Justice Act 2007, at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region.

The seized drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis.

Investigations are ongoing. This seizure forms part of Operation Tara; an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy, which was launched by the Garda Commissioner in July 2021.

The focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks, at all levels - international, national, local - involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale and supply of controlled drugs.

Louth GAA County Board announce short extension to its Field of Fortune fundraising draw

LOUTH GAA County Board have announced a short extension to its Field of Fortune fundraising draw.

The draw, which was originally scheduled to take place on Monday, 3 August, will now be held on Sunday, 23 August. According to a statement from Louth GAA the decision was made to maximise potential funds for the cost of the new county stadium which will open next year.

Great Northern Distillery secures landmark long-term partnership with Chinese brewing giant Tsingtao

DUNDALK’S Great Northern Distillery has announced a landmark long-term cooperation agreement with one of China’s largest beverage companies in a move that is expected to significantly strengthen the position of Irish whiskey in the world’s largest consumer market.

The agreement, signed in Dublin on Wednesday, July 30, between Great Northern Distillery (GND) and Tsingtao Brewery, marks a major milestone for the County Louth-based distillery as it continues to expand its global reach. It also represents one of the most significant partnerships yet between an Irish whiskey producer and a leading Chinese drinks company.

Under the agreement, Tsingtao Brewery will introduce a range of Irish whiskeys through its extensive distribution network across China, giving Great Northern Distillery unprecedented access to one of the fastest-growing premium spirits markets in

As part of the longterm supply agreement, the Dundalk distillery will provide mature Irish whiskeys from across its portfolio, ranging from three-year-old expressions to premium 21-year-old whiskeys.

Great Northern Distillery will also provide

technical expertise and support to Tsingtao Brewery as the Chinese company develops its own whiskey distillery.

For Great Northern Distillery, which has become one of Ireland’s largest independent whiskey producers since opening in Dundalk in 2014, the agreement represents another significant chapter in its international growth story.

The distillery, established by Irish whiskey pioneers John Teeling,

Jim Finn and David Hynes, operates two state-of-the-art distilleries on a 5.5-hectare site in Dundalk with an annual production capacity of eight million litres through its pot stills and a further 12 million litres through its column stills.

Today, the company supplies customers in more than 60 countries around the world and remains independently owned and 100 per cent Irish-owned by the extended Teeling family.

Chairman John Teeling described the agreement as a transformational opportunity for both companies and for the wider Irish whiskey industry.

“This agreement represents a tremendous opportunity to participate in what I believe will be the next great growth market for Irish whiskey,” he said.

Mr Teeling believes the rapid expansion of the middle class across Asia presents enormous opportunities for premium Irish products.

ANCIENT LOUTH VOLCANO OFFERS NEW CLUES ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF ITS MODERN-DAY, ACTIVE “BROTHERS AND SISTERS”

AN extinct volcano in Co. Louth has provided scientists with important new insights into how modern volcanoes develop and erupt, challenging one of the most widely accepted ideas about what lies beneath Earth’s surface.

An international team of volcanologists studying Carlingford Mountain has found that volcanoes are not always underlain by large chambers of molten rock, as traditionally taught in schools. Instead, their research suggests that underground magma systems can alternate between liquidrich and crystal-rich states over

time, offering a more complex understanding of volcanic activity.

The study, led by researchers from Trinity College Dublin and involving scientists from the UK, the United States and the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, was published in the Journal of Petrology.

Carlingford Mountain, on the Cooley Peninsula, is the fossilised remnant of a volcanic system that formed around 60 million years ago. It originated from the same geological hotspot that currently fuels active volcanoes in Iceland before the

opening of the Atlantic Ocean gradually pulled Ireland away.

As the volcano cooled and became extinct, glacial erosion stripped away the overlying rock, exposing the ancient magma plumbing system beneath.

This has provided researchers with a rare opportunity to examine rocks that once lay several kilometres below the Earth’s surface, offering direct evidence of processes that remain hidden beneath active volcanoes today.

The research team analysed rocks across Carlingford Mountain, studying their

microscopic textures and the composition of crystals to reconstruct how the underground magma system evolved over thousands of years.

Their findings showed that the volcanic system did not consist of a permanently molten magma chamber. Instead, it developed in a pulsating cycle, with periods when liquid-rich magma chambers were present interrupted by much longer intervals during which the magma became a crystal-rich “mush” containing very little molten rock.

Lead author Jack Beckwith, a PhD student in Trinity’s School of Natural Sciences, said the findings address a long-running debate among volcanologists about whether magma beneath volcanoes exists mainly as molten rock or as crystalrich slurry.

“This is a really interesting observation that addresses an ongoing debate as to whether magmas exist beneath volcanoes as liquid-rich vats or as

crystal-rich slurries,” he said.

“Recent studies have shifted opinion towards the slurry model, but it is still not clear how this slow, crystalline magma erupts at the surface.

At Carlingford, we see that magmas can actually switch between these two states over short periods in geological terms, creating opportunities for more fluid magmas to ascend and fuel eruptions.”

Principal investigator Dr Mike Stock said the research demonstrates how Ireland’s ancient geology can provide valuable information about active volcanic systems elsewhere in the world.

“Volcanoes are a major natural hazard but geologists struggle to understand them because we can’t take rock samples from several kilometres beneath Earth’s surface in active settings,” he said.

“This study shows that ancient extinct volcanoes in Ireland can provide really important new insights – thanks

to glaciers eroding away their overlying rocks, we’re able to directly see inside their magmatic plumbing systems. They are perfect analogues for their younger brothers and sisters on modern-day Iceland.”

Researchers say the findings improve understanding of how volcanoes evolve throughout their lifetime and challenge the long-established view that all volcanoes are fed by large, permanently liquid magma chambers.

While Carlingford Mountain has been extinct for millions of years, scientists believe the same processes continue to operate beneath active volcanoes today. They say studying fossilised volcanic systems such as those in Co. Louth could ultimately contribute to improved understanding of volcanic hazards and eruption processes.

The research was funded through the Research Ireland Frontiers for the Future programme and supported by Geological Survey Ireland.

Certa partners with RNLI to support lifesaving work in Louth

Energy and fuel supplier Certa has announced a new partnership with the RNLI that will support the charity’s lifesaving work in County Louth. at sea.

Certa, part of DCC Energy plc, operates Ireland’s largest network of pay@pump forecourts and home heating depots. In County Louth, the company has forecourts in Drogheda and Dundalk, along with depots in Dundalk and Dunleer.

As part of the fundraising campaign, Certa will donate one cent per litre from every online home heating oil order placed throughout August. A second fundraising drive will take place

in November, when selected forecourts and depots will feature specially branded “donation pumps”, with one cent from every litre of fuel purchased donated to the RNLI. Customers will also be able to make additional donations to the charity at Certa’s 49 pay@pump forecourts, 21 local depots and through the company’s website.

The partnership extends beyond fundraising. Throughout the year, the RNLI will use Certa’s digital advertis-

ing screens to promote key water safety messages, while Certa’s employee Volunteering Day Programme will see members of its 370-strong workforce supporting RNLI initiatives in communities across Ireland.

Laura Byrne, Head of Sustainable Fuels at Certa, said the partnership reflected the shared community focus of both organisations.

“Certa is proud to support the search and rescue service that the RNLI provides in Louth.

The RNLI is a natural fit to become our Official Charity Partner as we are both part of local communities not only in Louth but across Ireland,” she said.

She added that securing the fuel supply for RNLI lifeboats is a critical part of ensuring volunteers can respond whenever emergencies arise. Byrne also highlighted the company’s role in supporting the RNLI’s planned transition to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a renewable fuel that will

help reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

Welcoming the partnership, Killian O’Kelly, RNLI Fundraising and Partnerships Lead, said the organisation depended on public support to continue its lifesaving work.

“Last year, RNLI lifeboats at our 46 stations, including the five in County Louth, launched 967 times, bringing 912 people to safety, 17 of whom were lives saved.

A total of 280 of those launches took place during the hours of darkness,” he said.

“Every launch represents someone in urgent need and our volunteers drop everything to help.

Ensuring that we have a secure supply of fuel is critical to the service that the RNLI provides.

Certa understands this and we look forward to working with them as we continue our lifesaving work and begin our transition to HVO as a renewable fuel.”

The Sarah Fagan Women’s Lap Lady Captain’s Charity Events deliver €10,710 boost for St Vincent de Paul Dundalk of Louth returns for sixth year CUCHULAINN Cycling Club have now finalised plans for this Year’s Sarah Fagan Women’s Lap of Louth which will take place on Sunday 16th August 2026. Now in its 6th Year, this annual “ladies only” cycle, attracts female cyclists from several counties.

Formerly known as ‘The Women’s Lap of Louth’, in 2023 the sportive was renamed the ‘Sarah Fagan Women’s Lap of Louth’ in memory of Sarah and the tremendous impact she had on women in sport. In 2023 Cuchulainn CC was greatly saddened to lose one of its stalwart members Sarah Fagan. An esteemed member of both Cuchulainn CC and Setanta Triathlon club Sarah was forever on hand to encourage others, especially women and girls to join in the sports she loved.

As in previous years, the SFWLOL will link into Sport Ireland’s “HER Outdoors Week”.

This initiative is designed to attract more women into sport.

Our aim is to run an enjoyable and fun event for female cyclists of all abilities. We particularly want to encourage those who are new to the sport to enter.

RECENT charity golf events hosted by Dundalk Golf Club Lady Captain Leone Bailey and her dedicated team have raised an outstanding €10,710 for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVP) in Dundalk, providing a significant boost to the organisation’s work supporting local individuals and families in need.

The fundraising initiative received tremendous support from members of Dundalk Golf Club, who raised an impressive €9,210 through a series of charity outings held during Lady Captain Leone Bailey’s year in office. Their efforts were further enhanced by the generosity of Anne and Eugene McEntaggert of Smyths Life Pharmacy, who made a substantial donation of €1,500, bringing the final fundraising total to a remarkable €10,710.

The cheque was formally presented to Helen Grant, Area President of SVP Dundalk, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the fundraising campaign.

“We are truly overwhelmed by the generosity shown to the Society,” Helen said. “Our heartfelt thanks go to Lady Captain Leone Bailey, her dedicated team, the members of Dundalk Golf Club and Anne and Eugene McEntaggert of Smyths Life Pharmacy for their wonderful support.”

The organisation provides help without judgement, ensuring that those in need receive assistance with dignity and respect.

The funds raised through the charity golf events will help provide food and grocery vouchers, support with heating and electricity bills, assistance with rent arrears, school uniforms, educational expenses, medical costs and other essential everyday needs for families and individu-

als across the local community.

Speaking about the significance of the donation, Helen said the impact of the fundraising extended far beyond the monetary value of the cheque.

“This cheque is much more than a donation,” she said. “It will become food on a family’s table, heat in an older person’s home, educational support for a young person and much-needed relief for someone who may feel they have nowhere else to turn.

“Most importantly, it sends a powerful message to people who are struggling in our community: you are not alone.”

The successful fundraising campaign is a testament to the generosity and community spirit of Dundalk Golf Club and its members, whose support will make a real difference to the lives of many local families in the months ahead.

New review offers hope for Kilcurry families face anxious more parking at Clarke Station wait for school bus places

Clarke Station’s parking needs are being reassesed as part of a national review.

CLARKE Station’s parking needs are being reassessed as part of a national review, raising the prospect of additional spaces at the busy Dundalk station following repeated concerns about parking shortages.

Independent Cllr Maeve Yore once again raised the issue at the July meeting of Louth County Council, where she asked for an update on plans for the station.

Director of Services Thomas McEvoy told the meeting that Irish Rail was finalising a draft national car park strategy, which he said had been submitted to the National Transport Authority several weeks earlier.

He said the council was also waiting to hear back from CIÉ Group Property after putting forward a number of possible options for the station.

Irish Rail completed its previous National Car Park Strategy in 2020 to identify where additional parking was needed at train stations across the network. The strategy forms the basis of the current National Car Park Programme, which is funded by the NTA and delivered by Irish Rail.

Clarke Station was not identified as a priority for additional parking at that time.

However, the NTA has confirmed to the Dundalk Leader that the station is now being looked at again because travel and commuting patterns have changed significantly in recent years.

“As part of this review, the needs of stations across the network, including Dundalk (Clarke), are being reassessed,” the authority said.

The NTA also said it understood

Irish Rail was close to completing the review and expected to receive the updated strategy shortly.

Once received, the recommendations will be considered alongside other public transport investment priorities. This will help determine future funding for station access and parking improvements, including any potential project at Clarke Station.

The review is also looking at how passengers get to stations by bus, on foot and by bicycle.

The NTA said improving these more sustainable options was a key focus, although more car parking could still be considered where there was a clear need and suitable land was available.

Irish Rail has been contacted for comment.

FAMILIES in the Kilcurry area are facing an anxious wait to find out whether their children will have a place on a school bus to Bush Post Primary School when the new term begins.

That is according to Fine Gael councillor John Reilly who has expressed “serious concern” over the ongoing difficulties he says many families are facing in securing school transport for students attending Bush Post Primary School this September.

He said he had been “inundated with calls and messages from anxious parents who are still trying to source bus tickets for their children” in recent days.

According to Cllr Reilly, most of the representations he has received are from the Kilcurry area where around 35 students are due to attend Bush Post Primary School during the coming academic year, but a number of families have yet to learn whether their children will be allocated seats on school transport.

“School bus tickets seem to be like a lottery,” Cllr Reilly said.

“Parents have complied with the application process, yet many still do not know if their children will have access to a school bus.

“This uncertainty is causing unnecessary stress and anxiety for families at what should be an exciting time as children prepare for the new school year.”

He has also asked Louth TD Paula Butterly (FG) to raise the matter with Bus Éireann and the Department of Education.

“It is unacceptable that families are left unsure how their children will get to school just weeks before the start of term,” Cllr Reilly said.

“The demand for places is clearly there, particularly in the Kilcurry area, and I am calling on the relevant authorities to provide additional capacity where neces-

sary.”

Under the School Transport Scheme, applying and paying for transport does not in itself guarantee that a pupil will receive a seat.

Cllr Reilly said he would continue engaging with Bus Éireann, the Department of Education and other local representatives in an effort to secure a solution for the families affected.

The Dundalk Leader has contacted Bus Eireann and the Department of Education and Youth for comment.

Dundalk athletics track enters final lap as major upgrade nears completion DUNDALK is a step closer to gaining access to a major new sporting facility, with work at Dundalk Athletics Track site nearing completion.

According to Independent councillor Maeve Yore, the facility includes a new eight-lane, 400-metre synthetic running track, a central field space and dedicated facilities for the long jump, triple jump, shot put, high jump, pole vault and javelin, along with equipment storage areas.

Cllr Yore, who said she has repeatedly raised the need to develop the track over the past seven years at every opportunity, welcomed the latest progress on the project, saying she is “delighted that the works are progressing and close to completion.”

She said work had begun on an attenuation tank for stormwater drainage, while the foundations and base

for new floodlights were poured this week.

The floodlights have been ordered and it is hoped they will be installed and operational during the final quarter of 2026, according to Cllr Yore.

“I go up to the Track bi-weekly to check progress and am on first-name terms with the contractors at this stage who keep me updated on developments”, she said.

Cllr Yore added she visited the site this week while Matthew Cohen Trackmaster International carried out works.

“Matthew’s company is doing the line marking and Track certification and Trackmaster International is accredited by World Athletics for onsite and laboratory testing as well as services for precision survey checking

and track line marking globally,” she explained.

“I am absolutely ecstatic that Dundalk Athletics Track is on ‘the final lap’ of works and hopes the opening will be before the end of Summer 2026.

“It will be a phenomenal and transformative asset for schools, clubs and athletes across our town and county,” she added.

People may be ruling themselves out of Louth affordable homes, Cllr Kerley warns SOME people in Louth may be missing out on affordable homes because they assume their income is too high to qualify, a councillor has warned.

Fine Gael Councillor Rachel Kerley said some prospective buyers appeared to believe the qualifying rules were similar to those used for social housing and may be ruling themselves out without applying.

“Maybe people don’t realise they would be eligible,” she told the July meeting of Louth County

Council.

“Maybe they think the threshold might be similar to getting onto the council list. I’ve had a couple of inquiries from people who didn’t realise they’d be in that threshold.”

A fford ab l e-p urchas e homes are not assessed using the same income limits as social housing.

Each scheme has its own maximum gross household income limits, which can vary depending on the type, cost and location of the homes. An applicant’s mortgage capacity, savings

and overall purchasing power are also taken into account.

Under the scheme, local authorities make specific newly built homes available to eligible buyers at prices below their market value.

In return for the reduced price, Louth County Council takes an equity share equal to the difference between the home’s market value and the price paid, expressed as a percentage of its market value.

“These are great schemes and we need to make sure that we are getting as many applications in,” she said, adding that she wanted to see the scheme used as widely as possible.

Responding, the council offical said the Department of Housing was now referring to affordablepurchase homes as “starter homes”.

Council looks at measures to deter extended coastal campervan stays LOUTH County Council is looking at ways to discourage campervans and caravans from being left for long periods in coastal areas after concerns were raised about vehicles staying at Gyles Quay for extended periods of time.

Raising the issue at the July Louth County Council meeting, Cllr Shane McGuinness (FF) said he had visited the area and several people had spoken to him about caravans and campervans parked along the shoreline.

“Some people said certain caravans just park there and they go working during the week and come back at the weekends so maybe it’s something we should look at,” he told the meeting.

In response, Senior Engineer Mark Johnson said the council was already aware of the issue.

“We will have a look at that and see what we can do to dissuade people from doing that,” he said. “It has come to our notice and we are looking at it.”

“You’re Never Too Old to Learn”: Traditional musician Noreen McManus embraces student life at DkIT FOR decades, Noreen McManus has been a familiar face on the traditional music scene in the Northeast, sharing her passion for Irish music with generations of musicians. Now, after a lifetime of performing, teaching and travelling the world with her fiddle, she has embarked on a new journey — returning to education to pursue a degree at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT).

“I was born in New York. That’s where I learned fiddle with the legendary Martin Mulhall,” Noreen recalls. “My family moved here in the 70s, and I’ve pretty much been playing traditional music ever since.”

Music has shaped every stage of her life. A respected performer and teacher, Noreen has been deeply involved with Comhaltas and the Oriel Traditional Orchestra, helping to preserve and promote Irish traditional music across the region. Her talent has also taken her far beyond Ireland, performing in countries including Norway, Belgium, the United States and Zambia.

Reflecting on her travels, one experience that stands out is visiting Zambia, where she was inspired by the natural rhythm and enthusiasm of the children she met.

Although music has always been central to her life, higher education was something she had never had the opportunity to pursue. Having completed her Leaving Certificate at just 17 years of age, she went straight into employment with the ESB. Family life and work followed, and college remained an ambition that was put on hold.

With her children now grown and more time available, Noreen decided it was finally the right moment to fulfil that long-held dream by enrolling in DkIT’s BA in Music and Performance Technologies.

“All my life lessons have led me to this really because this has always been something that I’ve wanted to do,” she says.

Despite her extensive musical experience, Noreen chose not to take the Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) route, which could have allowed her to skip parts of the programme. Instead, she wanted to experience every aspect of the degree from the beginning.

While the technological side of the course initially seemed daunting, she has embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. From learning digital music notation software and developing IT skills to studying classical music, popular music and music history, every module has opened new doors.

“I’ve always wanted to do classical and never got the chance,” she says. “I can’t believe the amount of stuff I’m learning. Studying popular music, the History of Music and seeing how one genre relates

to another is just fascinating.”

As she prepares to begin her second year, Noreen is particularly looking forward to developing her understanding of harmony and building on the foundations she established during her first year.

Far from seeing graduation as the finish line, she believes it could simply be the beginning.

“Who knows, I might even go back for more education,” she laughs. “I think I’ve been bitten by the bug.”

Looking back, Noreen says returning to education has been one of the most rewarding decisions she has ever made and encourages others who may be considering taking a similar step not to let age or self-doubt stand in their way.

“Don’t be afraid. I had that moment of, ‘Oh my God, can I really do this?’

The technology side worried me the most. But yes — you can absolutely do it,” she says.

“People are so supportive, so helpful, and so willing to do anything they can for you. So, take the step. Go for it.”

For Noreen McManus, a lifetime dedicated to music has led to an exciting new chapter — proving that the joy of learning, much like music itself, has no age limit.
