It proved to be a hugely successful weekend for two of Dundalk’s finest athletes with Kate O’Connor finishing third at the European Multi Events Team Championships in Monzon, Spain and evergreen Collette O’Hagan winning gold at the Energia24 World Championships in Belfast.

Sixteen-year-old Kate O’Connor from Belfry Gardens on the Avenue Road made a huge impression in her full senior international debut at the European Multi Events Team Championships in Monzon. Competing alongside some of the finest heptathletes in Europe Kate produced a magnificent performance to finish third Kate O’Connor with parents Michael and Valerie. Calls for a safe road crossing at Tain Bridge

By Paul Byrne Dundalk Cycling Alliance have called for a safe road crossing for walkers and cyclists at the Táin Bridge. In particular they are aiming to make the journey to school safer for pupils who live in Ard Leathan. Last week councillors Peter Savage and Mark Dearey were presented with 130 signatures from the residents of Ath Lethan requesting safe road crossings for walkers and cyclists to local schools and shops.

Dundalk Cycling Alliance presented the signed request to the two councillors last week to highlight the issue.

taxi driver threatened at the weekend Gardai are following a definite line of inquiry after a taxi driver was threatened in the early hours of Sunday July 2.

A passenger produced an implement and threatened to stab the driver on Park St at 1am, before leaving without paying his fare.

A Garda spokesman stated that it was a frightening ordeal for the man. “Although it was only a small fare that was involved, it

was a serious incident as the driver was put in fear. We are following a definite line of inquiry at the minute but we are asking anyone with information on the incident to come forward and speak to us,” he stated.

Overall, it was another busy week for Gardai in Dundalk with a total of 414 incidents dealt with.

Dundalk Cycling Alliance have called for a safe road crossing for walkers and cyclists at the Táin Bridge. In particular they are aiming to make the journey to school safer for pupils who live in Ard Leathan.

Last week councillors Peter Savage and Mark Dearey were presented with 130 signatures from the residents of Ath Lethan requesting safe road crossings for walkers and cyclists to local schools and shops.

Dundalk Cycling Alliance Chairman Liam Kieran and his colleagues presented the signed request to the two Councillors near the junction of the Táin Bridge and the existing cycleway that runs along the northern side of the Castle-

The proposal for safe road crossing at the Táin Bridge and St Helena Park area would permit the Ath Lethan school pupils to cycle safely to the Marist, St Vincent’s and Réalt na Mara schools. Many Ath Lethan residents have reported that it is too dangerous at present to attempt a crossing with young children along this very fast busy road. One resi-

dent in particular, described crossing the road at the Lidl Shopping centre as a death trap.

Liam Kieran explained that the funding of this safe road crossing would complete a number of various disconnected cycle ways that already exist in this area of Dundalk.

“This is necessary if we want to encourage younger and older people to cycle that

the cycling network should be properly completed and fully connected. At present our network of safe cycle ways are fractured and incomplete and are therefore not safe for inexperienced or young cyclists,” he stated.

Cllr Mark Dearey said that this road crossing at the Táin Bridge would also open up the town to the old railway line that went out to Bellurgan and

The councillor indicated his continuing interest in recommending these facilities and will continue to support the provision of these cycle way road crossing.

Memorable weekend for talented athletes

“This was a huge day for Kate and we are all so proud of her. She has worked so hard to get to this stage but to be competing against seasoned athletes who have qualified for Olympic games is unbelievable. You have to remember that Kate is still just 16 years of age and for her to come third in her first ever international senior championships is hard to believe,” stated

Michael.

“I have to give credit to Athletics Ireland for giving Kate the opportunity to compete at such a high level and also to Athletics Northern Ireland who have let Kate train in Newry and Belfast. I would be Kate’s lead coach but Laura Kerr, Tom Reynolds, Adam McMullen and Dessie Gough have also coached her in specific disciplines to help her get ready for this event. She has been in really good form in recent weeks and we thought she’d do pretty well over in Spain but this was beyond our expectations.

She got 5632 points which is just 30 short of the Irish record and is good enough for a Commonwealth games nomination standard.

“She has been selected for the European Junior Athletics Cham-

pionships in Italy later this month so the plan is to give her a few days rest before starting training again for that.

Kate would train four or five days a week and is hugely dedicated and this shows how far you can go if you put in the work,” added the proud father.

Meanwhile, Collette O’Hagan has enjoyed many magical moments during her career to date but none surpassed her achievments last weekend in Belfast as she finished first in her age group in her very first 24 hour race.

The IAU 24 Hour World Championship is an annual international 24-Hour run competition organised by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU).

The idea of the race is to see who can run

the furthest in 24 hours. 67-year old Collette from Bay Estate in Dundalk had never competed in a 24 hour race prior to last weekend but that proved not to be a disadvantage as she came out on top of her age group to finish first in the world.

She clocked up 90 miles over the 24 hours around Victoria Park in Belfast and according to Collette she is already looking forward to defending her title next year.

“It was without doubt the highlight of my running career so far. I’ve had plenty of highs over the years on the track and on the roads but to win a gold in the World 24 Hour Championships is just unreal to me.

“The support I had from all my running buddies was unbelievable and the cheering

and encouragement helped to keep me going and helped me have one of the greatest days of my life.

“My strategy was just to keep running and not take any breaks. I’m pretty strong mentally so I knew that I wouldn’t quit easily. I saw lots of people taking breaks but to be honest I felt pretty good all the way

through and got through it ok. When I crossed the finishing line I had a feeling I did pretty well but when they told me I came first I was overwhelmed.

“I was the oldest competitor to finish the race and I’m already looking forward to going back next year and defending my ti-P tle,” stated Collette. p

Man denied breaching barring order A man who denied breaching a safety order taken out by the mother of his five children, was sentenced to five months in prison at Dundalk District Court.

Robert Nesbitt (39) of Trinity House, Court Road, Newtownbalregan, Dundalk, told the court that the allegations against him were false and that the injured party and her family were trying to stop him from getting on.

The court heard from the defendant’s former partner that on July 28 last year she had taken out a Safety Order. On May 7 this year she was driving home at Beechmount Drive with her sister and three children when she saw Mr Nesbitt.

He turned his car and followed her and when they got out he spat at her and called her and her sister an abusive name. The witness added that she had to take different routes to school to avoid the defendant and that he was harassing her 14-yearold daughter.

She added that all she wanted was for him to leave her alone.

Mr Nesbitt, a minibus operator, stated that he was not in the area at the time of the incident and that his former partner and family were trying to put him away.

He stated that they have found out that he has a new partner who is pregnant and that they didn’t want to see him getting on.

He stated that he is

regularly in the street for work reasons and to pick up the children and that there were no issues.

Insp Martin Beggy pointed out that if he was a regular visitor to the area it would not make sense for the injured party to make up an accusation about a time he wasn’t there.

Judge John Coughlan ruled that he preferred the evidence of the injured party and convicted Mr Nesbitt.

He stated that it appears that his is harassing her on a continuous basis and that women put up with a lot from a certain type of man.

He imposed five months custody and fixed recognisances for an appeal.

Whether you have lost something, heading off on your travels, or even chasing a hopeless cause, many people have a favourite Saint to whom they pray.

However, a group of local families are about to go one better as they have a relative who is on course to be Canonised in the near future.

Fr Solanus Casey, who has strong links to the North Louth/South Armagh area, was recently beatified by Pope Francis and is in line to become the first American-born man to become a Saint. He will be Beatified at a special ceremony in Detroit on November 18 and members of his local family are expected to be in attendance.

Both of Fr Solanus’ great great grandfathers, were born in Dungooley in the 1700s, and many of their descendants in the Sheils, Duffy and Casey families are living in the area today. They are also related to the extended Coburn Clan who also have many relatives based locally.

Both of his great great grandfathers, Peter Sheils and James McNance, were born in Dungooley in the 1700s.

Their children, James Sheils (born 1770) and Margaret Mary McNance (born 1779) who were also born in Dungooley, went on to marry near the turn of the century.

Their daughter Bridget Marga-

Fr Solanus Casey ret Sheils (born 1807 in Dungooley), who would become Fr Solanus Casey’s grandmother. Bridget married Michael Timothy Murphy (born in 1794) and they lived in his home village of Camlough.

Michael and Bridget had a daughter, Ellen Elizabeth Murphy (Born in Camlough 1844).

Elizabeth moved to America and

she married Bernard James Casey from Castleblayney on October 6 1863 at the age of 19. Ellen’s address on the Record of Marriage was Hoistings, Minnesota, while Jame’s address was Danvers, Minnesota.

Fr Solanus Casey, Capuchin Franciscan, was born Bernard (Barney) Francis Casey on November 25, 1870 on a farm near Oak Grove, Wisconsin.

He was the sixth child in a family of ten boys and six girls born to Irish immigrant parents, Bernard and El-T h len Murphy.

The young Barney left the farm toQ work throughout Wisconsin and Min-L nesota as a logger, hospital orderly,s street car operator, and prison guard.T At the age of 21 he entered St.( Francis High School Seminary ing t Milwaukee to study for the diocesan o priesthood. Five years later he contemplated a religious order. Investedp in the Capuchin Order at Detroit inC 1897, he received the religious namei of Solanus. f After his ordination in 1904, Fry Solanus spent 20 years in New York,m Harlem, and Yonkers. In 1924 he was assigned to St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit where he worked for a further 20 years. He died at the age of A 86 on July 31, 1957. a Many cures from illness have been f attributed to Fr Solanus and three b years after his death many friends y formed the Fr. Solanus Guild to preserve his memory and ideals.

Learners, their families and staff from LMETB’s Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS), Chapel St., Dundalk gathered on Wednesday June 21 to celebrate the end of their year of study in 2016/2017.

After a busy few months of preparation for Leaving, Junior Certificate and QQI assessment, it was a welcome opportunity for the group to reflect on the year gone by and the friendships made. Learners from three cours-

es- General Learning QQI Level 3, Leaving Certificate for Adults and Third Level Access Course QQI Level 5- were presented with Certificates of Attendance whilst they wait for official certificates to follow in the coming months.

Some of the learners will return to complete a second year with the VTOS programme whilst some are already planning their next steps into further/higher education or employment.

A man who failed to appear at Dundalk District Court to face a no insurance charge was banned from the road for four years.

of 20 Langfield, Dublin Rd, Dundalk, was observed by Gardai at Doolargy Ave, Muirhevnamor, on February 13 this year. He failed to produce documents as requested.

The court heard that the defendant had been banned for two years for no insurance in 2016 and was disqualified at the time. Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €100 fine.

Two Dundalk sisters took part in a Mission to Mars Lego Robotics Summer Academy in Dublin City University (DCU) this week.

Maggie Cumiskey (20) and Nicole Cumiskey (17) joined members of Irish Girl Guides (IGG) from around the country at the week-long course organised by the DCU Lego Education Innovation Studio.

During the Academy the girls, who are both members of Drogheda Senior Branch (Senior Branch is the section of IGG for 14-30 year olds), had hands-on experience making Lego robots, which they learned to manoeuvre using programming. They gained a range of skills in computational thinking, engineering and programming during the course, which was engaging

and hands-on.

The course was designed to encourage the girls to take Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in school and college and to consider pursuing careers in STEM, and according to Maggie it was a very worthwhile experience.

“I really enjoyed this week. It wasn’t something I could ever see myself doing; I never considered going into STEM, but the coding was easier than I expected it would be and it was very rewarding. It was a very good experience and I would definitely recommend it.”

Youth has its fling at Dundalk Golf Club

Youth certainly had its fling on Sunday at Dundalk Golf Club as 14-year-old Declan Curtin from the home club won the Intermediate Scratch Cup while 12-year-old Ben Caffrey won the Minor Scratch Cup. Curtin, who plays off 13, beat a field of 84 while 17 handicapper Caffrey saw off the challenge of 72 others on a day when the Competition Standard Scratch was 73, one more than Standard Scratch for the white course.

Curtin shot a gross score of 80 to win by two shots from Brian McDonnell (13) with John Stanley (11) from City West a shot further back having edged out Billy Curran (12) for third place on countback.

Curtin’s victory is yet another success for the club’s juvenile programme which is producing a steady stream of talented teenagers at the moment.

Ardee, where former Dundalk assistant professional Brian Kerley is now head pro, is

another club with a good juvenile programme and 12-yearold Caffrey certainly chose the right stage to announce his arrival.

He recorded a two shot victory with Colm Garvey (22) taking second on 86, one shot ahead of fellow Dundalk clubman Declan Ward (20) with Seamus Kelly (18) taking fourth on 88.

Liam McGailey (11) was a clear winner of Wednesday’s Open Singles Stableford with an excellent score of 43pts

which was three better than Paul Connolly (13), a visitor from Corballis Links in Fingal.

Fergal Harte (7), Donal Curran (14) and Declan Conlon (21) were the category winners while Timmy Connolly (24) won the Juvenile Prize.

The Gross Prize was won by Caolan Rafferty who is now playing off plus four after his course record 62 at the British Amateur Open. He shot 40pts. gross.

Players from the club’s elite squads were in action over the

last week across the country with Eoin Murphy leading home the Dundalk contingent at the Irish Boys Championship. He finished 19th with Josh Mackin in 26th and while Sean Laverty did not qualify for the fourth and final round his 71 in the second round suggests he is starting to find his feet at this level.

Zack Alderdice finished 25th at the Leinster Boys U14 Championship while Peter Rogers was 12th at the Leinster Seniors.

Ardee Concert Band are celebrating a memorable weekend in Cork that saw them scoop the top award at the 38th Annual South of Ireland Band Championships in Clonakilty.

The local band won first prize in the Senior section ahead of 30 bands from all over Ireland in three sections, seven in Junior, 16 in Intermediate and seven in Senior taking part on Saturday.

Ardee Concert Band received six other special awards including Best bass, Woodwind and Percussion sections, Best Celebratory piece (Sarah’s Delight – Soloist Robert Finegan on Soprano Saxophone, ably assisted by Gerry Farrell on accordion and Jenny Satelle on bodhran), a Special Adjudicators Award for Aisling Reilly for her beautiful clarinet playing in An Irish Ayre for Winds and Best repertoire of the day, bringing a total of seven trophies back up the road.

This month’s Dundalk Local Policing Forum saw Supt Gerry Curley give a presentation on the Garda Report outlining crime Statistics in the Dundalk area January 2017 to March 2017.

Arising from the report the following matters were discussed including: · Drug dealing at schoolsneed for Garda presence morning and evening · Aggressive Begging in Park Street · Prison Vans on Footpaths at the square · Cross Border Speeding · Burglaries in the Dundalk area · Drugs sale and supply in local villages and communities

· Enforcement of local traffic laws · Procedure for making a statement in assault cases/ Hit and Run cases · Procedure for reporting strange activity around the movement of drugs · Request for stats on crime hotspots. · Procedure around LCC tenants and sale and supply of drugs. · Lack of Gardai meetings with neighbourhood watch.

Director of Services in Louth County Council, Joe McGuiness also gave an update of the activity currently being undertaken by the local authority with regards to the Joint Policing Strategy.

fire safety strategy which will be implemented later this year, a procurement process to identify suitable contractors for the delivery of the Roads Programme 2017 which is currently underway, the creation of the ‘Louth Drugs and Alcohol Forum’ to deal with matters receiving attention including alcohol bye-laws to include all intoxicating substances including improper use of prescription drugs. He also stated that the council are in the process of re-establishing the Traveller Inter Agency Group arising from an action of the LCEP to ensure that there are adequate support mechanisms for members of the travelling Community.

in Brief Banned for four years

A man who failed to appear at Dundalk District Court to face a no insurance charge was banned from the road for four years.

Daniel Christodoulides (19) of 20 Langfield, Dublin Rd, Dundalk, was observed

by Gardai at Doolargy Ave, Muirhevnamor, on February 13 this year.

He failed to produce documents as requested.

The court heard that the defendant had been banned for two years for no insurance in 2016 and was disqualified at the time.

Judge John Coughlan also imposed a €100 fine.

Failed to pay

A man who left a service station without paying for €70 worth of diesel had his case against him adjourned to June 28 to allow him pay €300 to charity.

John Aherne of 39 Ferdia Park, Ardee, admitted the offence at Apple Green on the M1 Northbound on May 12 this year.

Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that this was essentially a drive-off but that full compensation had been paid.

Woman distressed by texts and calls Told to cooperate A 69-year-old man who admitted harassing a woman on a number of occasions over a ten-month period had the case against him adjourned at Dundalk District Court for a victim impact statement.

Phelim Hearty of 8 Mary St, North, Dundalk, sent a number of texts and made calls to the injured party as well as causing her distress when he met her in a shop.

The court heard that al-

though Mr Hearty and the victim had known each other, they were not close friends. In 2014 the defendant had been informally cautioned for similar behaviour but no charges had been brought.

On August 16 last year, Mr Hearty sent a text asking to meet the following morning. On four consecutive days between August 19 and 22, a total of 14 calls were made.

On October 16 the defend-

ant sent a hand-written letter posted in Wales to the woman’s home address, while on February 4 this year the injured party was startled by the accused when out shopping. He called her name and waved at her, causing her to be distressed and attracting the attention of a security guard.

He made a phone call on February 6 and left four voice messages on her phone, and

called her again on May 12.

When questioned by Gardai he stated that he was just phoning her as a friend.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, stated that his client accepted that the woman didn’t want any contact, but stated that there was no suggestion of violence.

Judge John Coughlan put the case back to September 13 for a victim impact statement and a Probation Report.

Station Award John Hayden, Station Controller, Dundalk was named runner up operations individual of the year at this year’s Always Safe Awards, which took place at a special ceremony at the Iarnród Éireann training centre, Inchicore. John has worked at Dundalk Station for 23 years and has always demonstrated great commitment to safety. Speaking at the event David Franks, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann said: “I would like to congratulate John on receiving this recognition in a very competitive category. There are many outstanding individuals across our national operations team, so to be named runner up in this category is a mark of outstanding work. Well done. ”

James Harrison of 3 Ferdia Park, Ardee, had the case against him adjourned after pleading guilty at Dundalk District Court.

Evidence was given that on January 5 this year Gardai were called to Apple Greeen on the Newry Road where the defendant was very drunk and refused to leave. He was unset-

tling customers and when Gardai arrived he became abusive, telling them that he would “box the head” of them. He refused to give his name.

The defence barrister stated that the 30-year-old defendant, who has 54 previous convictions, has a serious drink problem.

Judge John Coughlan adjourned the case for a Probation Report to October 4 and warned: “If you don’t co-operate with the Probation Services I will give you six months in Mountjoy”.

It’s a very exciting time for basketball players in the North East who are currently preparing to travel to Hungary to represent their region at an international basketball tournament there, as part of the North East Basketball Board’s (NEBB)’s development programme.

The U16 and U18 Girls and Boys North East Knights squads will travel to Hungary to participate in the Intersport Youth Basketball Festival against teams from across Europe.

A total of 50 players from clubs in Meath, Cavan, Louth, Monaghan and Westmeath are involved in the squads with five of those representing Liby Dynamites Basketball Club, Amy Kerley Blackrock , Jewel May Rosagaran, Dundalk, Elmer Brannigan, Aoife O’Brien, Edaoine Murtagh who hail from Longford along with assistant coach Martina Kelly will travel to the town of Kaposvar with their team mates to take part in a five-day festival of basketball, as well as have the opportunity to experience the culture

Snooker League

In a night of stalemates in the Peadar Callan Snooker League the large watching audience were treated to a great night of snooker. The results on the night show just how tight it is in the race for the top four places and a place in the semi finals with just four weeks of league action remaining.

In the opening match JJ McArdle’s team was dealt a blow as JJ was unable to take to the baize through illness leaving stand-in captain Aaron Callan first up against Micky Ralph. In a game that could have went either way it was Aaron who shocked Micky to put his team 1-0 up. In the next frame Glen Duffy dispatched Barry McKeever to level the scores before Tony Fee put JJ’s men back in front only for Ralph to return in the remaining E doubles match to rescue a point for the leaders.

The draw however gave Stephen O’Hanlon’s men a chance to open up a lead at the top of the table but they were also held to a 2-2 draw at the hands of Alan Thompson’s team with Ciaran McShane pulling out a clearance only he can to rescue the point in the last match.

It also ended in a 2-2 draw with Brendan O’Hanlon potting a fine black in the last frame against a strong Paddy Hayes side.

Liby Dynamites will have strong representation in Hungary

The teams will play over the course of five days from July 3 to 7, facing opposition from Hungary, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Turkey and Egypt, to name but a few. While in Kaposvar the teams will be accommodated in the

University campus and in their limited free time will have the opportunity to enjoy the specially organised range of social activities in the festival village as well as visit the water park at nearby Lake Balaton.

A 12 person strong team of coaches, man-

agers and other personnel will be supporting the players including , coach Orla Brennan who will coach the regional under girls 18 team. Managers and coaches are looking forward to the players and themselves experiencing basketball at Euro-

pean level and having the opportunity to play and watch teams from some of the strongest basketball nations in the world. The whole experience should be a significant building block for the development of basketball in the North East.

Geraldine’s School of Speech & Drama Summer School will be held this year from July 10 to 15 and July 17 to 21 in Creative Spark, Dundalk.

“We have three fantastic courses available for children aged between four to teenage years. The summer school has been developed to strike a lovely balance between fun creative activities which include lots of games and learning solid drama skills. Children don’t require any previous experience in drama to attend the summer school,”, explained Geraldine

Kieran, school director.

The Summer School will round off an eventful academic year for GSD School of Drama. In February, the school aired its first series of radio dramas in conjunction with Dundalk FM. Also, 38 GSD students participated in summer exams through Leinster School of music and Drama, with some excellent results this year.

Summer at ‘Spirit Store’

The great entertainment continues in The Spirit Store across the summer and Sunday July 9 and 16 and will see the Traditional Session downstairs in the kitchen free from 6pm to 9pm and all are welcome.

The session has been going for many years here now and is still going strong. This weekly get together of folk and traditional musicians is a wonderful way to spend your early Sunday evenings.

As the academic year ended the School had a resurgence of activity with several back to back auditions for two major productions. “We always provide the platform for our students to go on and work with other productions or events. I held two audition days in June and I was blown away by the response. Our

students were praised for their talent, ability to take direction and overall self-confidence,” stated Geraldine.

Three junior students Cliodhna Hanniffy, Ronan Grant and Ellie Murphy all experienced a day with RTE as part of the Abracadabra magic show. Cliodhna Hanniffy was also short listed for the Shane Meadows channel four show The Virtues.

Blackrock Raft Race The 22nd annual Blackrock Tidy Towns Raft Race and Family Fun Day lived up to all expectations with young and old enjoying a great day out on the beach. The promenade, the sea wall and beach were full of visitors and locals having a lovely traditional day with the added colour of the Raft Race followed by a recital from the Dundalk Brass Band at the sundial.

Meanwhile, there was a sandcastle competition on the beach in which adults and children took park with equal enthusiasm creating superb imaginative sand castles and sand sculptures.

Following the sandcastle competition there was the Junior Poc Fáda which is gaining in popularity year on year and the afternoon on the beach was completed by the Schools Talent Competition.

A woman who admitted taking groceries from a supermarket was given the benefit of the Probation Act when she appeared at Dundalk District Court.

Donna Rodgers of 5 Mooreland Row, Lisdoo, Dundalk, stole goods to the value of €109 from Tesco, Long Walk, on June 8 this year.

Solicitor, Niall Lavery, handed in a letter from the 40-year-old defendant’s doctor to Judge John Coughlan who applied the Probation Act.

Anthony Martin of Shanmullagh, Hackballscross, had been charged with three offences arising out of an incident on Park St on April 9 this year.

The Summer Stars Reading Programme is being held in Dundalk Library

Summer Stars Reading Programme

Dundalk Library launched the summer reading programme on June 24 with a performance by local singing group NCkids.

Louth County Libraries will run the Summer Stars Reading Programme for children in all library branches during the summer holidays from mid June to the end of August.

Each child who registers for Summer Stars at their local library joins in the fun of reading lots of exciting books during their summer holidays.

They will receive their own Summer Stars Reading Card to record their progress along the

way and a library reward stamp will be added to their reading card at the library after each book read. Children will be encouraged to continue reading throughout the programme. Fun rewards will be provided along the way.

At the end of the challenge, all children who participate are invited to attend an award event at which they will be presented with their award certificate.

The summer programme for children is as follows: July 11 Movie Night at 6pm; July 15 – Teddy Bear Tales at 11:30am; July 19 - Be Dog

Reigning champions Louth are all set to defend their title at this weekend’s NARGC All Ireland Clay Target Championships in Ardee.

Louth has proved to be a hotbed of talent with regards to clay shooting and the team will travel to Ardee in confident form with some of their sharpshooters showing some great form in recent weeks. Two-time All-Ireland champion Jake Byrne believes Louth are in with a great chance of defending their crown.

“Everybody is really in tune at the minute and we are quietly confident that we can do well this weekend. It was great to win the competition last year and we’re aiming to make sure the trophy stays in Louth for another year. We came second in a competition recently which was won

by Wexford and they will probably be our biggest rivals for gold this weekend. We have a very strong team going

“My brother Ryan is in great form recently and actually won the U21 Leinster title just last week so he’s obviously in great form. weekend,” stated Jake.

Jake is no stranger to national success having won two All-Ireland U21 titles as well as representing his country in the world championships in Florida. He will be hoping that he along with his talented teammates can shoot for the stars once more this weekend and bring home the All-Ireland trophy for the second year in succession. The event takes place this Saturday and Sunday in Pepperstown Ardee.

Outcomers will host its eight annual Dundalk LGBT Pride Festival, from July 11 to 16, with activities ranging from a Youth Pride Event, to the hugely popular family-friendly Pride Open Day. This year, the annual celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in the North East region of Ireland is focussing on young people. Young LGBT people are still vulnerable to homophobia and discrimination and the immense stress this can add to their lives.

Events for this year include “I am Michael” – Movie screening at 8pm in An Tain Arts Cente and will be followed by free coffee, tea and selection of cupcakes.

Thursday July 13 will feature Open Music Night The Coach House, behind 8 Roden Place, in collaboration with Culture Club. This is a BYOB event. 8pm., free admission.

The North East Youth Pride Day will take place on Friday July 14.

Call to ease rates pressure Peter Fitzpatrick TD has called for the speedy introduction of the commercial rates bill which will ease the pressure on ratepayers in Co. Louth. Speaking in the Dail last Tuesday Deputy Fitzpatrick stated that people call into his constituency office every day to complain about rates.

“We need to reduce rates valuations on businesses because they are leading to job losses in every county. Rates are increasing rather than decreasing and this is killing shops and businesses,” explained Deputy Fitzpatrick.

“The commercial rates bill would give councillors the power to reduce bills for businesses.

This will enable thousands of

businesses to benefit from significantly reduced bills. The Bill would also create a level playing field whereby community rates, water rates, small and mediumsized enterprises and large multinational companies can be supported,” he continued.

“It would ensure that taxpayers are no longer required to pay their annual bills in two instalments.

The Bill would for the first time give local authorities the power to slash fixed rates for businesses. Our town centres are being decimated. Every day, someone comes into my constituency office to complain about rates.

“When can we expect the Bill to come before the House? I hope

Almost 1 in 4 of motorists have considered sacrificing their comprehensive car cover in favour of a third party or third party, fire and theft policy as a result of rising insurance costs, according to research undertaken by AA Ireland.

As part of an AA Car Insurance survey of over 3,000 motorists, respondents were asked if they had considered changing from comprehensive motor insurance to a third party policy at the time of their last renewal to reduce the cost of cover.

5.89% of those surveyed stated they opted to make the change to third party cover, with a further 18.98% admitting that while they had considered the change they opted to retain their comprehensive cover.

Meanwhile, a further 12.67% acknowledged that while they had not considered sacrificing their comprehensive cover at the time of their last renewal, they may do so when next renewing their policy.

“The advice we would give customers who are considering a chance in the level of cover they take out is to weigh up the potential savings versus what

you would lose by moving to a third party policy. Depending on the age of your car, how often you drive or even your own driver history a third party policy may be more affordable and may also best match your needs,” Mark Watterson, AA Director of Insurance stated.

“However, the number of people who are considering making such a change is certainly alarming, and further underlines the need for action in tackling insurance hikes.”

“We have been highlighting the threat of rising premiums since November 2015 and while we have seen some government action on this in recent months there is still a great deal to be done. We’re a predominantly rural country and, as a result, the car is a necessity for many Irish people.

It’s important that our government don’t overlook this fact and continue to tackle the issue of rising premiums instead of viewing the steps already taken as being enough.”

Younger drivers were the most likely to have changed their insurance from comprehensive cover to third party or

third party, fire and theft according to the AA survey.

Among those aged between 17 and 24 almost one in 10 survey respondents (9.59%) had switched from comprehensive cover, with 8.75% of those aged 25 to 35 having opted for a lower level of cover at the time of their last renewal.

“Insurance often tends to be most expensive for younger drivers before becoming cheaper in time as they gain more experience behind the wheel and, as a result, third party cover may well be more suitable and affordable for less experienced drivers,” Watterson added. “As well as shopping around for the best deal, it’s important to ensure you’re purchasing the right cover for you. If you don’t drive regularly, have a low annual mileage, or drive an older car third party cover may be more suited to your needs.”

The survey also found that men were slightly more likely to have changed or considered changing from comprehensive at the time of their last renewal, with 6.26% of men opting to switch to a third part policy compared to 4.62% of women.
