The occupants of two houses in Carlingford had a lucky escape over the weekend when an attempt was made to set fire to their properties.

The incidents occurred in the early hours of April 1 and Gardai believe that these were random attacks. Fortunately in both cases, the residents were awake and no serious damage was caused.

Gardai were called to a house at Newry St, Carlingford between Midnight and 1am by an occupant who was woken up by a noise at their front door. An attempt had been made to set it

alight and a small amount of damage was caused.

There was no suspect present and the scene was preserved for a technical examination.

While at the scene, Gardai learned that a short time earlier somebody had tried to light a curtain through an open bedroom window in a house nearby.

Gardai have appealed to anyone with information to come forward and have warned people in the area not to leave windows open. A spokesman described this as a potentially serious incident and that investigations are ongoing.

Almost 40 years after first stepping into the Mid Louth school, and 15 years after his ‘official’ retirement, the ever-popular teacher is showing no signs of slowing down.

Banned for total of eight years A man who was driving while over the limit and without insurance was disqualified for a total of eight years at Dundalk District Court.

Gheoghita Costel Nica of 188 Waterville Crescent, Tom Bellew Ave, Dundalk, was stopped by Gardai on August 1 last year at Belfry Gardens. The 23-year-old, who had no previous convictions, provided a urine sample which showed he was over the legal limit.

Judge John Coughlan imposed a threeyear ban for drink driving and a five year ban for having no insurance, along with a €75 fine in each case. Other charges were taken into consideration.

The country’s longest serving teacher celebrates 80th birthday Bartle Woods has proved that age is no barrier to achieving anything as he celebrated his 80th birthday on April 1 with staff at Monastery NS in Ardee where he continues to teach on a regular basis.

Almost 40 years after first stepping into the Mid Louth school, and 15 years after his ‘official’ retirement, the ever-popular teacher is showing no signs of slowing down and is as popular as ever among staff and students.

Principal Jim McGee believes that Bartle is the longest serving teacher in Ireland and a record breaker, and to celebrate his 80th birthday, staff gathered last week in Monastery NS for a special party.

Bartle continues to be a huge part of the school community by teaching traditional music to the boys every week.

Bartle was in his 40s when he started teaching in Monastery NS 39 years ago on September 1, 1978 with a class of 44 fifth class pupils, and over the years he made a huge impression on the progressive school as the current principal explained.

to develop a distinctive culture and ethos for the school. Renowned artist Paddy Lynch was deputy principal at the time and was ably assisted by fellow teachers Pat Madigan, Anne McCoy, Margaret McCahey, Rose McGrane, Vincent Hanratty, Margaret Clarke and Miriam Hanberry.

“Bartle always had a unique sense of humour that endeared him greatly to pupils and staff alike. He brought a ‘child-centred approach’ to the classroom long before this concept was in vogue. He was appointed Deputy

Principal in 1992 and also acting principal in 1993. In 2002 Bartle decided to officially retire at the tender age of 65”, added Jim. However that wasn’t the end of teaching for this energetic man as he continued his long standing practice of teaching traditional music to Monastery NS pupils which continues to this day.

“He tutors our boys in tin whistle and accompanies them on the fiddle at key school events such as Confirmation, Green Flag ceremonies, School Concerts and much more. Indeed

Ireland's GDP growth firm but will gradually decelerate

According to the Winter 2017 Economic Forecast for Ireland, GDP growth will remain firm but gradually decelerate amid heightened risks and an uncertain global backdrop (from 4.3% in 2016 to 3.4% in 2017 and 3.3% in 2018). This is still well above the euro area forecasts of 1.6% in 2017 and 1.8% in 2018. Domestic demand is expected to remain the main driver of the economy supported by the improving labour market with unemployment expected to drop to 6.7% in 2018. The general government deficit is estimated to have fallen to 0.9% in 2016 and to fall to 0.6% in 2017. Ireland’s debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to decline gradually from 75.1% in 2016 to 73.6% this year and 72.6% in 2018. The forecast for Ireland also says that risks have heightened in including

uncertainties

related to the UK ‘leave’ 2016, vote and those surrounding future US tax and trade policies.

Fire destroys compound where 90 cars stored Fire units from Dundalk and Ardee were called to a warehouse on the Marlbog Road last Thursday evening as a blaze broke out in the compound which the gardaí use to store seized vehicles. It’s believed that between 90 and 100 cars were inside the warehouse which was destroyed in the fire.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze which was tended to by fire-officers for over six hours.

Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen for

miles as it billowed into the sky. According to Joe Lumsden, assistant Chief Fire Officer for Co. Louth, there were no casualties during the fire.

“We got a phonecall about 6:30 telling us that a building had gone on fire at the Marlbog Road in Haggardstown. We sent three fire engines, one from Ardee and two from Dundalk, to the scene and we were working on it until approximately 1am.

Thankfully nobody got hurt during the fire

but I do believe that up to 100 cars as well as the building they were being stored in were destroyed. We sent out a warning to all residents in the Haggardstown/ Blackrock area to close their windows as there was a toxic element to the smoke which was coming from the building,” stated Joe. The toxicity of the smoke was believed to have been caused by upholstery in the cars, tyres, and fuel in the vehicles which also caused regular explosions in the early stages

of the fire. The premises had been used by a company called GT recovery whose clientele include the Gardaí who use the building to store seized cars.

Gardai confirmed that approximately 90 cars were stored in the compound at the time. The secene was preserved for a technical examiantion and enquiries are ongoing.

Officers are keeping an open mind on the cause of the fire and are awaiting the results of the technical examination.

plans has recently been published for consultation”, he continued.

When asked by Deputy Fitzpatrick how high a priority Mounthamilton was with regards to the 300 at risk areas, the Minister stated it was too early to say but did indicate that it would take ten years to complete the 300 projects.

In the mean-time Cllr Maria Doyle is continuing to put pressure on Louth County Council to install a pipe under the Hill St. Bridge which had been promised to local residents over a year ago.

“We met with council officials over a year ago and we were promised that the pipe would be

installed by Christmas 2016. The pipe has still not been installed and from the documentation I have seen at council meetings I would be surprised if they have it installed by next Christmas.

“This is simply not good enough for these residents who have been flooded four times in the past seven years.

For over half the year these residents are living in dread of flooding and once again we urge council officials to begin work on the construction of this pipe which will help to alleviate flooding while we wait for the CFRAM programme to reach Dundalk,” stated Cllr Doyle.

Driver warned he faces long prison sentence

A 19-year-old man who was disqualified for ten years for driving without insurance was warned that he faced a long prison sentence if he came before the court again.

Ryan McDonnell of 10 Gort Nua, Station Road, Castlebellingham, was stopped at Newrath, Dromiskin on September

3 last year. He had seven previous convictions including one at Carrickmacross District Court for no insurance which resulted in an eight-year ban.

Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, explained that that defendant, who is on a farm relief scheme, bought a car before he could afford insurance. He added that his

client was not disqualified at the time of this offence.

Judge John Coughlan imposed the ten-year ban and a €20 fine while issuing the following warning to the defendant.

“If you come before me again I will give you a long stretch in jail. You are lucky you have such a good solicitor”.

Blackrock at a standstill for funeral of Capt Mark Duffy

THE village of Blackrock came to a standstill on Thursday last when thousands gathered for the funeral Mass of Irish Coast Guard Captain Mark Duffy.

A moving tribute from Mark’s wife, Hermione, was read by family friend, Declan Whelan, and spoke of his love for his family and his work.

Prayers were said for Capt Duffy’s colleagues, Capt Dara Fitzpatrick, whose funeral took place on March 18th, and their colleagues, winchmen Paul Ormsby and Ciaran Smith, both still missing.

President Michael D Higgins, accompanied by his aide de camp, Col Michael Kiernan attended, while the Taoiseach was represented by his ADC, Lt Col Kieran Carey.

Ardee Community School hosts successful 5K event ARDEE Community School held a very successful 5K run/walk to raise money for the School Development fund on Friday March 24.

It was also a chance for the students to participate in a wonderful all-school event which enabled athletes to show their skills and for everyone to join together in a community event and fundraiser.

It started and finished outside the school and a total of 724 participated. Teachers either ran the race or acted as stewards or supervisors. There was a great atmosphere at the start of the race and a palpable sense of fun and competitiveness.

There was chip timing for every student and a finishing line video. Those who were serious about completing in a record time were at the start of the race and these included many of the staff. Refreshments were provided for all participants. Prizes were awarded to the winning boy and girl in each year group. Everyone who finished got a personalised certificate.

The students had been provided with sponsorship cards earlier in the school term. It is estimated by Rory Callan, teacher and chief organiser, that as much as €10,000 will be raised.

World success for Brian and Geraldine

The North-East Runners reputation continues to grow with two of their members accounting for almost 50% of 22 Ireland’s medal haul at the World Masters Indoors in Daegu, South Africa.

Both Brian Lynch and Geraldine Finegan repeated their success from last year’s European Masters in Ancona, Italy with Brian claiming three medals and Geraldine picking up six.

63-year old Brian from Barrack St. in Dundalk only started taking athletics seriously 12 years ago when he joined the North East Runners and since then he has proved to be one of the best senior athletes in the world claiming gold in the 1500m at the world championships in Budapest two years ago (a race in which he also the broke

the world record, clocking an impressive 4:26.72) and following it up last year with double gold in the 1500m and 3000m.

Brian travelled to Daegu determined to repeat his European exploits and after a relatively comfortable foursecond victory in the 3000 metre final he outbattled Poland’s Ryszard Dryps to claim victory in the 1500m’s. Not content with double gold Brian went on to complete his medal haul with a silver in the 1500m relay. According to Brian the championships couldn’t have went any better for him.

“I have to say the whole experience was just brilliant. The championships were extremely well organised and the people over there are just so kind and friendly. To win both the 1500 and the 3000 metres just added

to the whole experience.

I was especially glad to win the 1500 as that was a really hot race and I had to really push hard to get past the Polish guy who led for most of the way. I have to thank both Aiden Brennan and Jim Gonnelly who helped me get ready for the championships and with the help of God I’ll be raring to go again next year to defend my European titles.

Geraldine Finegan also of North East Runners had a packed schedule at the championships with the highlight her victory in the W50 pentathlon. She also took silver in the triple jump and pole vault and bronze in the 800m, 60m hurdles and javelin to add to her burgeoning medal haul from various games.

“I feel I could have also won the 60 metre hurdles but unfortunately it was scheduled the same day as the 800

Local couple, Finbarr Kelly and Mary Justine Gray have organised a darts exhibition and a ‘meet and greet’ with 16time world champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor to raise funds for two brilliant charities, North Louth Hospice and Cara Cancer Support Centre.

According to Mary Justine, from Mountain View Crescent, the reason why the two charities were chosen was because Mary has had a family member who has died of cancer, and Finbarr’s mother and father also died from cancer.

They also feel that North Louth Hospice and Cara Cancer Support Centre are two excellent charities that don’t get enough recognition for all their work in the community.

Phil Taylor was chosen as the guest because he has been in Dundalk before and it is his last year playing professional darts, as he is retiring at the end of the calendar year.

Mary also said that there is no specific goal in terms of money raised for the event, they just want to raise as much money as possible for two excellent local charities, and split the money raised evenly between the two charities.

Spring Into Storytime

It has been an exceptional week for sport in Louth, with the football team winning promotion to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League, and two former Dundalk stars, Daryl Horgan and Andy Boyle, making their Irish debuts.

Louth secured promotion to Division 2 in the Allianz Football League after a superb performance to beat Tipperary 0-16 to 0-12 in Thurles

on Sunday afternoon. This is now Louth’s second consecutive promotion, after beating Antrim in the Division 4 final last year.

This follows two consecutive relegations that Louth suffered in 2014 and 2015, which left them in Division 4. Colin Kelly’s team also reached the O Byrne Cup Final this year, where they lost to Dublin.

Their promotion is a good sign that they could have a good run in the Championship.

The brilliant week for Louth sport continued on Tuesday night, where Daryl Horgan and Andy Boyle both made their debut for the Republic of Ireland last night in the friendly against Iceland.

Horgan and Boyle, who both were a crucial part to Dundalk’s league success and Europa League run in 2016, where they won the League of Ireland for the third time in a row and reached the group stages of the Europa League.

Man has turned his back on drugs A man who pleaded guilty to a number of drugs offences has been given Community Service in lieu of a prison sentence.

Alex Dunne of 64 Grange Drive, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, was given the sentence by Judge John Coughlan after a positive Community Service Report.

At a previous sitting, evidence was given that on January 1 last year at 11.40pm, the defendant was observed

by Gardai in a drugs transaction. After being searched he was found to have cannabis valued at €138 and cocaine worth €53.

The nine Coláiste Rís students with Archbishop Eamon Martin

Nine students from Coláiste Rís were among 400 students from schools throughout the Archdiocese of Armagh last week at the Diocesan Faith Award Ceremony.

The ceremony took place to celebrate the young peoples’ roles in their parishes, communities and school.

During the ceremony they

were awarded with the Pope John Paul II Award. The Coláiste Rís students to be honoured were Matthew Egan Fee, Pádraig Begley, Fionn McEntaggart, James McCabe, Pierce McNee, Mamie McDonagh, Liam Lawless, James Cushnihan and Jordan Webb.

The theme of the evening centred on the invitation of Pope

Francis to the youth who attended the World Youth Day 2013, “Go, don’t be Afraid and serve”.

Archbishop Eamon Martin highlighted the need for young people to assist Pope Francis, by listening to the views of young people in advance of a special Synod that will focus on the pastoral need of the young.

A man who pleaded guilty to refusing to provide a sample after being arrested on suspicion of drink driving was banned from the road at Dundalk District Court.

Aleksejs Visnakovs of 187 Oaklawns, Dundalk, was disqualified for a total of 14 years after also admitting a charge of driving without insurance.

The 39-year-old was stopped

by Gardai at Greenacres on August 15 last year.

Solicitor, Barry Callan, stated that the defendant was originally from Latvia and had come to Ireland about ten years ago. He had struggled to get work and fell into depression, while he also turned to alcohol.

He had previously been banned

for three years for a drink driving offence.

Judge John Coughlan imposed a six year ban for refusal to provide a specimen and an eight year ban for having no insurance, along with a €25 fine in each case.

The judge, who stated that he didn’t want the defendant driving, took other charges into consideration.

Tidy Towns look to continue good work

Louth Tidy Towns Together are looking for more help to ensure they can continue their work of developing the county and keep improving quality of life for local communities.

Louth have enjoyed plenty of success in recent years in the National Tidy Towns competition including gold medals for Blackrock, Drogheda, Dundalk and Tallanstown and this has been made possible by various initiatives created by Louth Tidy Towns Together. These include litter management, weed control, verge trimming, graveyard maintenance, bring bank maintenance and the upkeep of street furniture.

At a presentation given to

Louth County Council the Louth Tidy Towns Together chairperson Larry Magnier spoke of how the work of tidy towns volunteers contribute enormously to tourism in the county.

“We have over 450 volunteers around the county who work in excess of 45,000 hours per year to ensure our county is looking as well as it possibly can be. We believe the work we do is intrinsically linked with tourism in the area and it is a huge undertaken for us to ensure we maintain the high standards we have kept up over the years. We manage and supervise TÚS schemes, community employment schemes,

probabtiion services and rural social schemes and we estimate we contribute around €1.25 million in labour costs to help keep Louth looking well,” explained Larry.

“We do all this for approximately €50,000 per annum which is what we get in amenity grants. We are very grateful for these grants which works out at about €1300 per group which sounds reasonable but we have to pay public liability insurance which works out at €400 per group per annum.

“As well as that it costs about €2000 per group to maintain equipment and machinery and many groups are forced to raise up to €10,000 through

fundraisers to keep their work programmes operational. To put it bluntly we deliver on the ground much of what the local authority would otherwise be expected to deliver.

“We believe that Tidy Towns should be the route to which significant grand aid funding can be achieved for investment in the County. All the work we do benefits the entire community rather than specific special interests and we are asking that no further cuts be made to our budget and if possible we would like help from Louth County Council in providing funding opportunities to support the work we do,” concluded Larry.

Following the success of the Dorothy Macardle conference, the first formal meeting of the Dorothy Macardle Society will be held in the Oriel Centre, Dundalk Gaol, on Thursday April 20 at 7pm.

The meeting will see a committee formed and a discussion on how to proceed with the society.

Dundalk hosts Cross Border Student Enterprise Trade Fair

Enterprising students were out in force on Friday as the annual Dundalk Cross-Border Student Enterprise Trade Fair took place in the Marshes Shopping Centre.

The event, which is organised

by Dundalk Grammar School Transition Year students, saw many of the region’s budding entrepreneurs display their wares to interested shoppers, with a number of interesting stalls on show.

As usual, a wide range of goods were available from Tshirts to an app which helps combat epilepsy. For those who needed to take a break from the hectic shopping, there was

also Luke’s coffee shop providing a great range of drinks and snacks.

The event saw pupils from the Grammar School joined by TY students from the De La Salle St Vincent’s and St Louis, while St Patrick’s Acadamey from Dungannon were also represented.

Rachel O’Brien who is a part of the Ace events management team who helped co-ordinate the event said she and her fellow organisers were delighted with how the trade fair had panned out.

Rachel expressed her delight with the wide range of goods on offer which help ensure the continued success of the event.

“It was great to see such interest from all the different

schools and I’d like to thank Michael Gaynor and Orla Hayes for coming down and acting as judges for us. There was a lot of effort put in but it was all worth it. Everyone has learned a lot by being involved so hopefully all involved will make a few sales”, added Rachel.

Michael Gaynor, president of the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce commended all students who took part in the trade fair.

“I have to say the standard of the stalls involved this year has been fantastic and I’ve seen a huge amount of very innovative projects. And also well done to the boys and girls in the Dundalk Grammar School who have done a really good job of putting this altogether,” stated Michael.

in Brief Warned he would lose his licence

A man who stated that he would lose his licence if he was banned for driving without insurance was given 15 minutes to come up with a €1,000 charity donation to have his case struck out.

Thomas Meehan of 20 College Manor, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk, returned to court with €300 and was given until May 10 to come up with the remainder.

Solicitor, Niall Breen, stated that his client believed he was insured.

There had been a policy in place but his name had been removed.

He worked in sales and the loss of his licence would see him lose his job.

Liby Dynamites win NEBB Top Fours

Liby Dynamites Basketball Club u18 girls team became the first winners of the North-East Basketball Boards Top 4 competition held in Dunshaughlin on Sunday last.

Having to play two of the top teams within the region and with the smallest squad of players Dynamites first game was against East Cavan Eagles from Virgina.

Eagles had denied Liby Dynamites the top spot in the league just days before with a three-point win in extra time, which allowed, Black Water Steelers from Monaghan take the league honours.

To have any chance of balancing the books Dynamites first had to beat Eagles in the first semi-final to setup a showdown with league

winners Steelers in the final later that day.

With a large support, Eagles started the game well and proceeded to pressure the Dynamites girls who mastered anything they could throw at them. The Dynamites were magnificent counteracting every move Eagles had and with team Captain Rachael Mc Nally to the fore nothing was made easy for Eagles as Dynamites gave one of the most professional team performances seen within the region for a long time.

Outstanding shooting from Eimear Branigan, Jewell May Rosagran and Amy Kerley powered Dynamites ahead and with Aoife O’Brien under the boards Eagles

had no answer to an outstanding team performance Liby Dynamites ran out comfortable winners and would now meet Black Water Steelers in the Final.

Black Water Steelers are a wellestablished club with several Irish International players.

This game was Dynamites last game of the season and to have any chance of winning Dynamites needed to be at their very best.

Blackrock Winter Golf League The Tiernan’s Centra Blackrock Winter League successfully concluded in beautiful sunshine on Sunday as the 16 matchplay finals took place. The winners, who are named in the results section below, received their prizes afterwards in the clubhouse.

The 19 handicapper has been playing steadily over the last few months but it all came good for him on Sunday as he shot 30pts to edge out Vincent Conlon (8) on countback.

Conlon had the consolation of taking the Category 1 prize while Martin Farrelly (13) took Category 2 and Alan Uzell won Category 3.

Neal MacKell claimed the Gross Prize with 25pts.

The first Golfer of the Year

competition for 2017, the Gold Medal Qualifier, takes place this weekend and slots are still available on both the Saturday and Sunday timesheets.

Flick knife in car

A man who told Dundalk District Court that he wasn’t aware that a flick-knife had been in his car was given a two-month suspended sentence.

Gerard O’Riordan with an address at Flat 3, 71 Cabra Park, Dublin, had been in Dundalk to visit his mother for the day when he was stopped by Gardai.

When Judge John Coughlan asked why the

defendant was in possession of a flick-knife, solicitor Eleanor Kelly stated that it was in his car and he didn’t know it was there. He accepts it was in his car but it had been there for some time.

A man who admitted taking his mother’s car without permission was disqualified from driving for two years at Dundalk District Court.

James McNamee of 8 Roden Place, Dundalk, was also fined €10 after pleading guilty to the offence. The court was told that the 26-year-old unemployed man had a total of 28 previous convictions, but none for road traffic offences.

Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that his client had just been released from prison. He lives with his mother who suffers with difficulties and he is an essential part of her life.

Mr McNamee also pleaded guilty to a public order charge and had that case adjourned to June 6 for a Probation Report.

Top junior tennis players gather to play in Dundalk this weekend

For a third year in a row Dundalk tennis club will be hosting a junior international tennis championships which will attract players from across the globe.

This will be a stopping point for players who are seeking world ranking points in a quest to build on their international ranking. Top 100 players make it to the grandslams in tennis including the US Open, The French Open, the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

There will be local interest this year from Oisin Murtagh in the boys section and Marie Perla Biansumba in the girls section who are both members of Dundalk Tennis club.

Local man and Davis Cup ATP professional John McGahon initiated the event in 2015 in a bid to increase local awareness of this ever-growing sport in the town and also to give Irish and local players the opportunity to compete and train alongside international tennis juniors.

“When I was a teenager I had Josephine Rice (née Kelledy), Aghaboys, Ballymascanlon, Dundalk, and formerly Mayne Road, Kilsaran peacefully at Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, on Saturday April 1. Predeceased by her beloved husband Pat John and brother James.

Drivers in our capital are the worst in the country according to the experiences of motorists surveyed by AA Ireland.

As part of an AA Motor Insurance survey of over 7,000 motorists, drivers were asked which county had the worst behaved drivers based on their own past experiences.

Almost half of those surveyed (46.77%) stated that they believed driver behaviour was at its worst in our capital, with drivers in Donegal (19.25%) and Cork (5.34%) being ranked as the second and third worst behaved respectively.

“While this was perhaps a less serious question than others we regularly ask motorists, it is an opportunity to highlight the increasingly common issue on Irish roads of rudeness and poor

being involved in an incident, but can also increase the risk to other drivers and vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.”

Meanwhile, drivers in Sligo and Leitrim were viewed as the best behaved in Ireland according to the survey. Just 0.26% of respondents held the view that drivers in these counties were the worst behaved in the country, reflecting a trend where rural counties were viewed as better behaved.

The survey also identified a shift in commuter behaviour, with over 20% of those surveyed describing themselves as at the very least occasional cyclists. 14.44% of survey respondents stated that they were occasional cyclists, with an additional 6.11% and 2.22% describing themselves as ‘regular’

and ‘daily’ cyclists.

“Cycling is becoming increasingly popular in Ireland,particularly in our city centres, and with this uptake it’s important for drivers to be on the lookout for vulnerable road users and follow the rules of the road at all times.” Faughnan added. “While it would be wrong to say that rudeness or failure to yield right of way is solely a behaviour found in motorists, in the event of accident a car is going to cause the most damage. We all have a responsibility to share the road safely and a key part of this is obeying the rules of the road.”

Of those who described themselves as at least occasional cyclists, the survey also found that 22.09% had been involved in a collision or fall as a result of a motorist’s actions.
