gold and a silver at youth level. The 21-year old who celebrated her birthday on St Patrick’s Day has also won fifteen national titles and can rightfully claim to be one of the finest boxing talents this country has ever produced. Amy beat highly rated Turkish boxer Esra Yildiz in her first bout on Wednesday afternoon before seeing off French U22 lightweight champion Belinda Limuka in the Semi’s. With confidence high after those two victories the Dundalk boxer beat the Italian champion to secure a third successive unanimous points victory and secure yet another gold. According to Amy or ‘Baby Canelo’ as she is known in boxing circles, the victory in Romania
was made all the better given that she had to beat three quality opponents to earn her gold medal. “I really feel that I earned this gold medal which makes the victory all the sweeter,” admitted Amy. There were twelve girls in the competition and when we were on the plane over there my Dad drew up a list ranking the fighters from 1-12 and of course I drew the girl he considered to be number 1. There was a lot of pressure on me going into that bout as I knew if I lost I would be going home empty handed. Once I won that fight I knew I was guaranteed a medal and that really settled me down and I boxed really well in both the semi’s and the final. “The reaction to my victory has been amazing and
I was shocked yesterday afternoon when I went on Twitter and saw the likes of Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlon, Katie Taylor, Michael Conlon and even Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh congratulating me. I’ve been doing this sport for many years now and I have to admit it’s a nice feeling to get recognition for your achievements. I have got the hunger back for the sport now and I’m really enjoying it again. I was living in London for a couple of years and I went off the rails a bit with regards to my diet and training but I’m back home now training with my Dad and I’m really excited as to what the future will bring,” stated Amy. Amy’s father Tony, who is also her coach couldn’t have been prouder of his
daughter’s record breaking fourth European gold medal. “Myself, my wife Sheila and Amy’s brothers are immensely proud of what she has achieved. She has come off the back of a disappointing loss to Kellie Harrington in the Elites and put in three brilliant performances to win the gold medal. The first fight against the Turkish girl was hugely important for Amy. She had maybe started to question herself a bit and it was important for her to win to prove to herself that she still belongs at this level. She goes into full-time training now in the elite squad in Dublin and we are targeting the EUBC European Boxing Championships which take place in Poland in May’” stated Tony.

Dundalk’s Irish dancers did themselves and their town proud once again as they returned from the World Championships in Glasgow with medals and globes aplenty. Having conquered the kingdom of Kerry back in February at the All Ireland Championships Scoil Rince Móna Ní Rodaigh travelled to Glasgow with thirteen ceili teams for the World Championships. And once again there was plenty to celebrate for the ‘Red Army’ as they are affectionately known with the school enjoying their most successful World Championships ever since they were founded by Mona in 1970. There were three world titles claimed by the school with Alannah Murray regaining her World Title at U21 level following a flawless performance from the talented dancer. There was also success for both the U11 and Senior mixed ceili groups with both dancing their way to gold. Gareth O’Connor also enjoyed a successful championships with the All Ireland Champion claiming world silver in the U17 section. Silver was also the medal colour for the U11 girls who narrowly missed out on gold while the U13 mixed ceili earned a well-deserved bronze for their efforts. The school medalled in twelve of the thirteen groups that were sent over which is testament to the huge amount of work put in by both students and teachers alike.
Elliot Kwelele celebrates his fourth place finish with teachers Nicola and Dervla McGee
Oisin Lennon ( 8th in U13), Katie Lennon ( 19th in U16) and Niamh Muldowney (7th in U23) were also successful with all three winning solo gold medals as well as a place at next year’s championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. According to Dearbhla Lennon from Scoil Rince Móna NíRodaigh all the dancers did themselves and the school proud with some fantastic displays.
“We are absolutely thrilled with our young dancers who deserve all the success that has come their way in both the All-Irelands and the World Championships. We sent thirteen teams over for the championships and medalled in twelve so I can say without doubt that these are our most successful ever championships,” stated the former Riverdance star. “Mona’s grandchildren Oisin and
Katie, who are also my nephew and niece, also qualified for the World Championships in North Carolina next year which made the whole event even more special. There’s an awful lot of work needed from both teachers and students to reach the level required to do well at these championships so we were obviously incredibly proud of all their achievements. I have to also mention the brilliant support we had from family and friends over in Glasgow which helped create a wonderful atmosphere,” added Dearbhla. Meanwhile there was also success for the McGee School of Irish Dance which is run by sisters Dervla and Nicola McGee with talented Elliot Kwelele finishing 4th in the U13 section which was enough to earn the recently crowned All-Ireland Champion a coveted globe. Emily Duffy finished an excellent 7th in the under-11 girls category which earned her a world medal. Both Emily and Elliot have now qualified for the worlds in Greensboro next Easter. Sarah Lee recalled placing 42nd in the under 12 girls section while Abby Dunne danced at under 15 girls level. Nicola and Dervla McGee were understandably very proud teachers following their dancer’s success in Glasgow. “We were delighted to have these four dancers represent our school at a world level as only 1% of dancers get to qualify for the world championships,” stated the McGee School of Irish Dance teachers.

Special service Adams expresses concern over Garda report of thanksgiving A Special Service of ‘Thanksgiving and Acknowledgement’ for our Emergency Services will take place at The Green Church on Tuesday evening, April 17th at 7:30pm. There are few subjects which will gain unanimous agreement more than that of our admiration and gratitude for the many dimensions of First Responders and Emergency Services. Particularly following the tragedy of Rescue Helicopter 116 and the recent bouts of exceptionally bad weather, we are evermore conscious of the wonderful, brave and outstandingly professional people who often put their lives at risk to assist others. Even without such dramatic events, most people will have experienced the calm, reassuring services provided by Ambulance Paramedics, Fire Brigade and Garda Síochána crews if called to emergencies in our homes, places of work or road traffic accidents. Equally, the Doctors, Nurses and support staff of Hospital’s Accident & Emergency units, the repair and reconnection teams of our Electricity and Gas services, the Rescue services of the RNLI, the many services of the Local Authority and the occasional events which call on the assistance of the Red Cross, Dept. of Defence, Dundalk Sub Aqua Club and others. To say a very special Thank You to all who serve our society in any such capacity, a “Songs of Praise” Thanksgiving service will be held in St Nicholas’ Parish Church (The Green Church) on Tuesday evening April 17th at 7:30pm, where the choir will be accompanied by guest organist and the Dundalk Brass Band. For those representing the Emergency Services, please wear your uniform and attend as a representative group but please note that the service is open to all …we also need the people of Dundalk who are saying “Thank You”.
Sinn Féin Louth TD Gerry Adams has expressed his “deep concern” at today’s report of the review into the events in Omeath in October 2015 in which Garda Tony Golden was killed, Siobhan Philips grievously wounded, and Crevan Mackin took his own life. Teachta Adams said “everyone was shocked by the killing of Garda Tony Golden, a popular community Garda, the wounding of Siobhan Philips and the death by suicide of Crevan Mackin.” Commenting on today’s report published by Minister Flanagan, Teachta Adams said: “There are significant matters of grave public interest raised by this report and by the events in Omeath in 2015, including the treatment of the Philips family by An Garda Síochána and now by the Minister for Justice. “The report acknowledges the two incidents of domestic violence were not recorded properly by the Garda. It also acknowledges that Crevan Mackin’s record of involvement with weapons and explosives and his activities in the North were not disseminated to the general Garda membership. This failure meant that Garda Golden was not informed of Mackin’s history of violence and possession of weapons.
Gerry Adams, TD.
The Ministers statement does not deal with this vitally important matter. “In December, the Minister told me that the criminal investigation by An Garda Síochána was still ongoing. However, the review report, under the section ‘Status of the Investigation into the Murder of Garda Golden and Attempted Murder of Siobhan Philips’ concludes that a ‘comprehensive investigation file was forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions on 10th May 2017’. “Why was the family not informed of this important development? Why, when I raised this matter and wrote to
the Minister, was I not told the investigation had concluded? In fact, why was I told the investigation was ongoing when clearly it wasn’t? This is not the way for the Philips family to have been treated by the Minister.” Responding to the part of the report that deals with Crevan Mackin’s previous arrest for possession of weapons and explosives, Teachta Adams said: “A separate review addressed the relationship between Crevan Mackin and those in An Garda Síochána who arrested him in January 2015 for possession of weapons and explosives and who knew that he still had access to a cache of other weapons. It is believed he used one of these weapons to murder Garda Tony Golden and seriously wound Ms Phillips, before killing himself. Documentation about the prosecution of Mr. Mackin and the Book of Evidence was also reviewed. However, the report comes to no conclusion on these matters. Why not? “The Minister and the Garda have now shifted the onus for dealing with these events onto GSOC. The family have been told in recent days that GSOC does not have the resources to carry out a comprehensive investigation in a timely manner. “We also know that in Feb-
ruary the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission was forced to go to the High Court seeking the transcripts of the occasions on which Crevan Mackin’s case was dealt with by the Special Criminal Court.” Concluding the Louth TD said: “The Philips family continue to have significant concerns, which I share, at the manner in which they were treated by An Garda Síochána on the evening they went to Dundalk Garda Station to report the domestic violence abuse of Siobhan Philips. “The Philips family insist they were told by the Garda in Dundalk that they had to go to Omeath to make the complaint. “I know from speaking to senior Gardaí in Dundalk that they accept that their facilities are woefully inadequate for dealing with victims of domestic violence. However, requests for funding to improve those facilities have been turned down. “There is clearly a serious matter of public accountability that must be addressed. The Philips family are seeking a full public inquiry. Today’s report underlines the need for this to be established as soon as possible,” he concluded.

Clem leads the way at Dundalk Golf Club
Clem Walshe proved he was no April Fool on Easter Sunday as he walked off the course a triple winner. The five handicapper shot a superb round of 42pts to win Sunday’s Singles Stableford competition and his gross score of 37pts was also the best gross returned on the day. His nett score also had a major bearing on the outcome of the 2018 Winter League as Team 11, captained by Mark Browne, went from joint fourth place, and five points behind, at the beginning of the final round to top spot by the end of the day’s play. They took the title by seven points from Team 7, captained by George Rogers, which had started the day alongside them in fourth place. Another member of Team 11, Anthony O’Donoghue (13), also made a significant contribution with 38pts which was also

enough for him to claim third place overall in the singles competition with Kevin Barry (10), a member of Team 7, finishing second with 40pts. Team 3, captained by Bill McCarthy, had started the third round leading by one point but
after returning a total of 98pts from their three counting cards they had to settle for third place, nine points behind the winners. Walshe, who won the Hilary Outing at Seapoint recently, produced a superb round of golf on his way to vic-
tory as he carded three birdies, 13 pars and two bogeys for a one under par 71 or 37pts that, with the addition of his five strokes became an impressive 42pts. He went out in 20pts, helped by a four point birdie at the par three fourth, and came home in 22pts having recorded three point birdies at the 12th and 15th and three point pars at the 11th and 15th. A sign of how well he played was shown by the accumulation of 12pts from the five holes where he had strokes. Colin Roche (6) with 37pts took Category 1 while Kenneth Cairns (13) won Category 2 with 38pts and Sean Gallagher (20) claimed Category 3 with 35pts. Best wishes to the Irish Mixed Foursomes team who are in action this Sunday. They face Bellewstown at 2.30pm with three of the five matches at home. All support would be greatly welcomed.

—this week’s answers—
Local firefighter Paul Kelly handed over a cheque for €2340 recently to SOSAD Dundalk having raised awareness and funds for the organisation through running in various races throughout 2017. Paul took part in a number of races last year including the Dublin and Derry marathons as well as the gruelling Mourne Mountain Run and took the chance at each event to raise the profile for SOSAD Dundalk by wearing their name on his vest. According to Paul he was moved to help raise awareness for SOSAD Dundalk having witnessed at first hand the impact suicide has had on many people around Dundalk. “Unfortunately, in my job as a fireman here in Dundalk I get called out to a lot of suicides and attempted suicides and over the last few years I noticed that there seemed to be a lot more cases happening around the area.
It got me thinking and reflecting about why this was happening so much and I got talking to a good friend of mine in SOSAD, Barry Watters, who told me that there is a lack of awareness out there with regards to the help that is out there for people who are struggling in their lives. “I took up running about five years ago as a way of relieving stress and pressure from everyday life and it worked really well for me. I decided at the beginning of 2016 to dedicate all my races to raising awareness for SOSAD and to shine a light on the invaluable and fantastic work they do. The more people we can get to openly talk about the issues surrounding Mental Health and Suicide, the more the stigma that’s still out there can be broken, we need to make it easier for the vulnerable to have the courage to step up and seek out these services. “At the start of 2017 I started an everyday hero funding page to try and raise money as well as
awareness for SOSAD and I set a goal of raising €2017. Thanks to the support of too many people to mention I smashed through that total and I was delighted to be able to present a cheque of €2340 recently. I would like to thank Celtic Adventures who sponsored my shirt as well as Peter McCaughey from IJM Timber Engineering who wrote me a cheque for €1000 to give to SOSAD. “Last year the whole Dundalk running community were devasD tated upon hearing that our good w friend Andy Califf had taken his n own life and that really hit me a hard. Andy was a huge supporter S of what I was doing and when 1 he passed away it made me even more determined to raise awareb ness and get people talking about D suicide. I’d like to thank everya body who has helped me over the last couple of years and hopefully we can continue to spread the word and help break the stigma Ciara Solan from SOSAD accepts cheque for €2340 from Paul Kelly of suicide,” urged Paul.

More medal glory for Eve in Rio Dundalk Leader 5th April 2018
Rio continues to be a happy hunting ground for Eve McCrystal with the Jenkinstown cyclist picking up another medal with her tandem partner Katie-George Dunleavy at the Paralympic games in Brazil. Eve and Katie claimed a bronze medal in the Women’s B Tandem 3km Individual Pursuit at the UCI 2018 Para-cycling Track World Championships in Rio a feat made even more impressive given that the pair only had four days training for the championships. Eve is an Irish Paralympic cyclist competing in tandem events for Ireland as a sighted pilot for blind cyclist Katie-George Dunleavy and the duo have established themselves as one of the leading pairs in world cycling winning
Eve McCrystal and Katie-George Dunleavy proudly show off their medals. seven medals at world level over duo bettered their opening ride by the last three years. Two years ago fully 2.5 seconds in a time which Eve and Katie made the headlines was actually quicker than Belgium when they won two medals at the who won the silver medal. Ahead Paralympics in Rio including a of both Belgium and Ireland were Great Britain who took home the sensational gold on the road. Eve and Katie qualified for the gold. The Irish pair haven’t competed bronze medal ride off comfortably and went on to beat New Zealnd on the track since those championdecisively to claim the bronze. The ships in Rio and given the fact that
Ireland does not have a velodrome the pair are at a distinct disadvantage to their competitors. According to Eve the pair were delighted with the bronze considering their limited track time in the lead up to the event. “We’re absolutely thrilled to come away from Rio with a bronze medal in our pockets. Unfortunately, due to the lack of a velodrome in Ireland we don’t get to train too much on the track so our total preparation for these championships consisted of four days in Majorca a week before Rio. We were realistic coming into the games and knew the gold medal would probably be beyond us as the GB girls have been practically living in the velodrome over the last few months. “The track is very technical so
although we were both very fit it takes a while to get to know the ins and outs of the events. We improved by 2.5 seconds from our first ride to our second after making a few adjustments and as I said we were delighted to beat the New Zealand girls in the bronze medal ride off. “I’ll take a couple of days off now before getting back on the bike in preparation for the Worlds in Italy in August. It’s quite a hilly course so the focus for me over the next few months will be to work on my strength and conditioning with the help of Stephen Woods in Iron Cast fitness. To be honest I can’t wait to get training again as I just love being out on the bike,” stated Eve.
Good results continue for Cuchulainn Cyclists The good results continued to come in for Cuchulainn’s Cyclists in the IVCA league. On Easter Sunday the action moved to Summerhill, Co. Meath for another long road race of 100km. In the biggest race of the day Alan Gray, in his first race since completing The Rás last May had a good day to come 3rd place in the bunch sprinting for the win. David Holland, also in the same bunch, finished just outside the top 10 in 11th place. Incredibly Alan’s father Martin Grey, still competing competitively well into his 6th decade was also in the same bunch and finished in 31st. In the second race of the day, last week’s winner Ray Fedigan, had another good result. With 2 riders
have broken clear and staying away to contest the top 2 steps of the podium, Ray won the sprint for 3rd. Aidan Delany also went well in the same race finishing in the top 15riders. Meanwhile in Co. Antrim, Liam Dolan was riding the 3 day Tour of the North, with the Clann Eireann of Lurgan. The race was won by one of the visiting professional teams from England. Liam had a solid weekend to claim 16th position overall. The last day’s stage was run off in biblical conditions, of 2oC coupled with constant rain & sleet. Such was the weather that by Monday lunchtime, only 61 of the original 115 starters had finished the race.

Golf Club ready for Inter-club competition
APRIL will see the start of golf’s inter-club competitions and Dundalk Golf Club plans to send out over 30 teams in men’s, ladies and juvenile events at regional, provincial and national level. All-Ireland pennants have been thin on the ground with the Jimmy Bruen Shield triumph in 2004 being the club’s only national title to date. Regional competitions have yielded some success with the 2016 Newsam Cup victory and the 2016 Husband and Wife being the most recent successes on the local front. Anne Doohan and Mary Lou Grennan have been appointed as Team Directors for the Ladies teams while Jim Caraher, Vincent Conlon and Paul Malone will take charge of the Boys teams. Pauline Campbell and Mary Lou Grennan will look after the Girls teams.

Clem Walshe, who was part of the management team that guided Dundalk to a Leinster title in the Junior Cup back in 2015, has been handed overall responsibility this year for the men’s team. Walshe, who plays off five, intends to draw on his own experiences in his role. He won a Barton Cup with St Anne’s in 1995 and was manager of the Dundalk team which won the Leinster Junior in 2015. The first Dundalk team in action this year will be the Irish Mixed Foursomes team which is managed by Alan Hurley and Criona O’Reilly. They take on Bellewstown on Sunday, April 8, at 2.30pm with three of the five matches in Dundalk. The winners are away to either Greenore or Laytown & Bettystown in the second round. Next up for Dundalk will be
the Barton Cup team. Managed by Carl Stewart and Alan McDermott they face Ardee on Saturday week, April 14, at 2.30pm with three of the five matches in Dundalk. Three Ladies teams will also be in action the same weekend. On Saturday, April 14, the Challenge Cup team, which is managed by Brid Rocks and Mary Dooley, will travel to Laytown & Bettystown to face Ashbourne. The next day, Sunday, April 15, the Intermediate Cup team, managed by Olivia Cunningham and Teresa Oakes, and the Minor Cup team, managed by Jacinta Foran and Elizabeth McGuinness, will be in Concra Wood for their first round ties. The Intermediate team face Ardee at 12 noon while the Minor team take on Hollywood Lakes at 1.30pm.

Dundalk punk poet Jinx Lennon will launch his new album GROW A PAIR!!! on Friday 13th April and will also take to the road to promote iit, culminating in the Body and Soul festival in Westmeath in June. His hometown however will have the privilege of hearing those new songs before the month is out however with Jinx scheduled to play in the Spirit Store on Friday, April 27th. It promises to be a fantastic evening with many special guests including those who contributed to Jinx’s latest album expected to take to the stage. Those include local Uileann
piper Conall Duffy who plays on ‘The GPO’ and Sharon Mc Ardle who added some magical harp on the song ‘Newry Bird’ . The other acts on the night will be ‘Acoustic Dan’ a hi-octane performer who sings songs about Belfast infused with the spirit of Woody Guthrie, Joe Strummer and Post Punk Podge and also The Technohippies, Limerick anarchists who draw their muse from the murky side of politics. The album ‘GROW A PAIR!!! will be available in Classified Records (Dundalk) iTunes ,bandcamp and other outlets. Tickets for the show are
available from www. spiritstore.ie.and are sure to be in high demand. According to Jinx his new album is filled with songs which talk about modern life. “A return to proper singalong folk from the borderlands with its own raw shape where roads that look like capillaries leading you into the unknown and concrete jungles bring forth 50000 psychedelic tales of destiny and dread. Songs that speak about modern life but could have been written 100 years ago that encourage you all to push back against the fear mentality and GROW A PAIR!!!,” stated Jinx in his own inimitable way.
One-man show at An Tain ‘The Words Are There’ is a compelling and timely piece of physical theatre that delves into a lesser learned side of domestic abuse – violence against men. Written and performed by Ronan Dempsey, who trained at Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq, Paris, this one man show received five star reviews in May 2017 for its powerful and sensitive telling of a taboo subject. Elaine Cronin, General Manager of An Táin Arts Centre, stated ‘as well as exploring an important subject, this piece of theatre has been described as ‘soul stirringly good’ – we’re delighted to bring it to a Dundalk audience.’ Don’t miss your chance to see the show that has been described as “a mastery of physical theatre”. ‘The Words are There’ is at An Táin Arts Centre for one night only, Saturday April 7 at 8pm. Tickets are €15 and €12 concession. Tickets are available at the Box Office on Crowe Street; phone 042 9332332 and online at www.antain.ie.

Soldier Avoids Conviction A soldier who admitted a number of public order offences avoided a conviction after agreeing to pay €500 to charity. Mark Skelly (24) of 38 Northway Estate, Dublin 11, was arrested by Gardai at Park St on March 9 this year and faced charges of intoxication, threatening and abusive behaviour, and failing to comply with the direction of a Garda.
Embassy are the big winners in snooker league The first of this week’s matches in the Dundalk Snooker League saw ‘The Embassy’ play their best snooker of the season with a well oiled team performance against ‘Natures Water’. Up first was Dominic O’Connor for ‘The Embassy’ who took on Alan Thompson of ‘Natures Water’. In a frame that Dominic always looked like winning it was Thompson who capitalised on a missed brown to clear up and give Natures water a 1-0 lead. That however was as
good as it got for ‘Natures Water’ with fine wins for Davey Moran and Mickey Ralph over Joe McEneaney and Ken Byrne respectively to leave the score at 2-1 in favour of The Embassy. With the wind in their sails going into the doubles the ‘Embassy’ pairing of Mickey Ralph and Gerry Rogers took on ‘Natures Waters’ Tomas Geroc and Shane Gorham. The Embassy boys made no mistake winning the frame to seal a 3-1 win which enabled them to leapfrog ‘Natures Water’
in the table. Next up were league leaders ‘Gonnolly Signs’ who were in action against an improving ‘Mallon Property’ team. In the opener Aaron Callan of ‘Gonnolly Signs’ took on ‘Mallon Property’s’ Stephen O’Hanlon. The latter cruised into an early lead and it began to look ominous for Callan who had his back firmly against the wall. However, Callan clawed himself back into the frame to force a black ball decider. O’Hanlon regrouped and potted arguably the best sin-
Judge John Coughlan stated that he would accept a donation of €500 for Daffodil Day and struck the matter out in order to allow him preserve his clear record.
Music Workshops Music Generation Louth will host ‘Pick Up and Play’ Workshops in Carlingford Thursday April 5. There are morning (101pm) and afternoon (25pm) sessions planned to cater for different age groups and abilities. Workshops are open to upper primary school students (4-6th class) and post primary students.
Dundalk Girls U16 team who beat Grange Woodbine 2-0 in Oriel Park last week
gle ball pot of the season up the rail to put Mallon property 1-0 up. In the second frame David J McArdle continued his fine form for ‘Gonnolly Signs’ by beating ‘Mallon Property’s’ Brendan O’Hanlon to level proceedings at 1-1. However Tiernan Mallon would restore ‘Mallon Property’s’ advantage by beating Steve McBride in the process. The league leaders needed to win the doubles match to force the draw and they
did just that when Mark Laverty pairing with Mickey Kelly dispatched of Stephen O’Hanlon and Anthony Fee to leave the match ending in a 2-2 stalemate. Charlie Chaplin’s lying bottom of the table needed a win when they took on Cusken Ltd but didn’t get off to the best of starts as James Coburn (Cusken’s) beat Glen Duffy in what was an excellent frame of snooker. One thing you can’t say about Chaplin’s is that they don’t battle and this was ev-
ident when Kevin McDonald brought them back level with a fantastic performance over Keith Morris. Next up for Chaplin’s was Justin McArdle taking on his old rival Paddy Hayes and it was Justin who dug deep to put Chaplin’s 2-1 up going into the doubles. However, Chaplain’s bad luck was again to raise its ugly head when their pairing of Maddy Hoey and Patsy Muckian were beaten by Cusken pairing of Hayes and Morris to leave the final score 2-2.
Victory for Dundalk girls
Dundalk U-16 girls returned to competitive action with a 2-0 win over Grange Woodbine in Oriel Park. The home side opened the scoring on 42 minutes when Grace Ojo scored following a pass from Rebecca Lambe-Fagan. Six minutes into the second half Ayo Adesanyo added a second after being set up by Aoife Byrne. Team: Rachel Mullen, Caoimhe Conroy, Bronagh Mulholland, Rebecca Lambe-Fagan, Kerry-Ann Darcy, Aoife Byrne, Andrea Stewart, Beth Hughes, Seona Halligan, Kerri Clinton, Ayo Adesanyo, Grace Ojo and Katie Moran.

Scoil Mhuire na nGael are celebrating on the double after scooping another two prizes in a national art competition. Alice O’Shaughnessy-Larkin won the overall Junior Category in the ESB Networks ‘Stay Safe, Stay Clear’ poster competition and Sanese Lamberga, was named Senior Leinster Winner. ESB Networks’ ‘Stay Safe, Stay Clear’ programme is aimed at Primary Schools. The core objective of the ‘Stay Safe, Stay Clear’ is to educate Primary School children about how to stay safe when they are playing outdoors near electricity poles and overhead wires. The programme provides a fun, exciting and educational way for pupils from Junior Infants to 6th Class to discover the benefits of electricity, while learning to be safe around it through lesson plans designed around curriculum strand units and learning objectives. An element of the ‘Stay Safe, Stay Clear’ programme is the poster competition. School chil-

gory winners. Winners are broken down into Regional and National winners. These winning designs are then exhibited in the ESB Networks calendar, this calendar is sent to schools throughout Ireland and ESB Networks staff.
After being pipped at the post last year, Dundalk Cricket Club are hoping to add to their collection of 3 league wins. Now in their ninth year, Dundalk are entering in Cricket Leinster’s Division 9 and Intermediate Cup. For the first time, this year the club will enter the Whelan Cup, a quickfire T20 competition. The club will be pairing with DkIT Cricket Club, to establish training and friendly pre-season matches, and St Vincent’s Girls’ School, which will see Dromiskin hosting Schools’ Cup matches again this year. The club commence its campaign with a game away to Longford on April 28, followed by a home game against Phoenix on May 5, while Clondalkin will visit on May 20th. Dundalk’s first cup game of the season will see them travel to Swords/ North County in the Whelan Cup on May 26.

McDonagh Sonya Happy Birthday (In Heaven) Wishing you were here today, For even, just a while, So I could say happy birthday, And see your loving smile. The only gifts today will be, your sweet memories left behind, Of laughter, joy and happiness, That echo on, in my mind. I’ll gaze upon pictures, I’ll think of you with love, And hope you’re doing fine, in Heaven up above. May angels hold you closely, and sing you a happy song, And I’ll be sending wishes, today and all year long. —Happy Birthday Sonya whose birthday occurred last Sunday 1st April. Always loved and sadly missed from all your loving family xxxx.

Novena to Saint Martha St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (Mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys, and a Glory Be Amen; and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants every thing before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. E.D.

SEAT posted the best results* in its history in 2017 after increasing its operating profit by 24.8% and reaching a figure of 191 million euros (2016: 153 million euros). According to the results presented yesterday by the Volkswagen Group, SEAT closed the year with a record 9.892 billion euros in turnover, which is 11.2% more than in 2016 (8.894 billion euros). The growth in sales boosted SEAT’s operating profit and income, which also benefited from a positive effect in the sales mix, that is, from selling
models with a higher contribution margin. SEAT delivered 468,400 vehicles in 2017, which is 14.6% more than the previous year and the best result since 2001, and became one of the fastest growing brands in Europe. SEAT continued with the biggest ever product offensive in 2017 with the Leon facelift, the launch of the fifth generation Ibiza and the new Arona crossover. The Ateca spurred SEAT sales and helped the brand achieve historic sales results in markets such as Germany, the United King-
dom, Austria or Switzerland. In its first full year of sales, the brand sold 78,700 units of the new compact SUV. SEAT is also maintaining this growth at the beginning of 2018, as global sales in January and February increased by 23.1%, reaching a total of 78,800 cars. Furthermore, total production of SEAT vehicles went up by 14.9% to stand at 479,300 cars. In 2017, SEAT built vehicles in Martorell, Kvasiny and Mladá Boleslav (Czech Republic), Palmela (Portugal) and Bratislava (Slovakia).
MAJORITY OF MOTORISTS STILL SEEING INSURANCE COSTS RISE, AA WARNS
Despite recent research from the CSO indicating that the cost of motor insurance has dropped by 12.8% in the past 12 months, many motorists are still seeing their premiums increase at the time of renewal according to a survey undertaken by AA Ireland. The survey of over 4,000 Irish motorists, carried out by AA Car Insurance, found that over half of respondents (54.06%) ‘strongly agreed’ that they had seen a significant increase in their insurance costs at the time of their last renewal. Meanwhile, a further 23.35% of those surveyed were somewhat in agreement with the claim that they had seen their insurance costs continue to rise year on year. “While we have seen a few headlines recently indicating that insurance costs are dropping, it’s important to bear in mind that this is based off an aggregate of all available data and, as a result, there are many motorists out there that have set to see their premiums start to dip. Even worse, our research indicates that the poor response
to this crisis from government has resulted in the majority of motorists still seeing the cost of their cover increase or, at best, stay at a level much higher than they would have paid in previous years,” Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs stated. “The issue of rising premiums first presented itself in 2015 and a number of bodies, AA Ireland included, have been campaigning for government action to resolve the crisis since then. Unfortunately, all we’ve seen from Leinster House is the publishing of a strong set of recommendations but no follow through on actually enacting any changes.” The AA also warned, however, that there appears to have been a decline in the number of people shopping around to try to save on their car insurance costs – an issue it describes as a sign of the fact that Irish motorists have been forced to become accustomed to higher premiums. When asked if they had shopped around less this year than in previous years when it came to motor insurance, just
under 1 in 10 of the motorists surveyed (9.67%) ‘strongly agreed’ that this had been the case. Meanwhile, a further 17.08% were somewhat in agreement with the claim that they had made less of an effort to compare premiums at the time of their last renewal. “Many people are still seeing increases in their insurance prices, but the percentage increase for most is going to be significantly less than they saw in 2015 or 2016. As a result of this people may fall into the trap of thinking they’re getting a good deal and fail to compare providers which could leave them paying significantly more than they need to for cover,” Faughnan added. “Even if you are one of the fortunate people who has seen their premiums drop compared to last year, it can still be worth putting some time into shopping around as, even when the drop in costs the CSO is reporting is accounted for, the average motorist is still paying 20-25% more for insurance than they would have in 2015.”
